College Football Win Total Predictions: Big Ten (West) – The Sports Gambling Podcast

Posted: at 5:56 pm

In case you missed it, check out my columns on theMAC Win Totals,Sunbelt Win Totals,Mountain West Win Totals, Conference USAEastandWestWin Totals,AAC Win Totals, ACCAtlanticandCoastalWin Totals,Big 12 Win Totals, PAC 12 NorthandSouth Win Totals, and the SEC East and West Win Totals.

Were less than two weeks away from the start of College Football! Weve gone through every conference in the nation and have saved the Big Ten for last. So without further ado, heres my breakdown of each teams win total for the Big Ten West.

Minnesota Golden Gophers Season Preview | The College Football Experience (Ep. 732)

Did people forget that Minnesota went 11-2 in 2019? Disregard last year. The Golden Gophers were one of teams that COVID hit the hardest in the country and they still put up a respectable 3-4 record with two of the losses in OT. PJ Fleck is a heckuva head coach and his team is primed for a bounce-back season.

QB Tanner Morgan is a veteran thats set to begin his 4th year as the starter in Minneapolis. Good luck finding another QB in the conference, or in the country, with as much experience as Morgan. Expect a stellar season from one of the best QBs in the Big Ten.

Mohamed Ibrahim also returns and is one of the top RBs in the nation. The junior from Baltimore ran for over 1,000 yards and 15 TDs in just seven games a season ago. Check the highlights and see for yourself.

Additionally, Minnesota has a dynamic group of pass catchers, led by Chris Autman-Bell. The offensive line also returns four starters and might be the best unit Fleck has had while at Minnesota. Theres a lot to like about this Golden Gopher offense.

The defense struggled last season but almost everyone returns and theres a Clemson-transfer coming in at DT to fortify the interior. Minnesota was decimated by COVID so the final defensive stats arent a true representation of the talent and experience returning. This unit will at least be a middle-of-the-pack defense within the league which should be good enough to win a lot of games.

The schedule starts with Ohio State coming into Huntington Bank Stadium Week 1. While Im not saying Minnesota will win, I expect this to be a tight game. In addition to OSU, Minnesota gets Maryland and Indiana from the East which is manageable. PJ Fleck will have this squad winning at least 8 games. Im all about the Over.

My Prediction: OVER

Excluding 2020, Wisconsin has hit at least 10 regular season wins in three of the last five years. HC Paul Chryst has done an excellent job in Madison and always has the Badgers towards the top of the division. However, while theres a lot of promise entering this year, I tend to lean Under when I see a double digit win total. This especially rings true in the tough Big Ten West

The Badgers immediately jump into a difficult schedule with games vs Penn State, Notre Dame, and Michigan in three of the seasons first four weeks. It helps that PSU and Michigan are at home and the Notre Dame game is at Soldier Field, but its a brutal stretch. As good as Wisconsin might be, they are going to drop at least one of these games.

After that, the schedule lightens up. Other than the season finale at Minnesota, the other in-conference road trips (at Illinois, Rutgers, and Purdue) should be Ws. Getting Iowa, Northwestern, and Nebraska all in Camp Randall is another break. With only four true road games, the schedule is challenging but not overwhelming.

If this squad is going to win the Big Ten West, theyll need a spike in offensive production. Returning QB Graham Mertz is back and hell lead an offense that only put up 22.3 points per game last year. Theres questions marks at the skill positions and the OL only returns three starters from last year. Mertz has impressed but his supporting cast may be lacking.

While the O struggled, the Badger D was best in the Big Ten and it returns eight starters. The front seven, especially the linebackers, will be fantastic but the secondary has to replace some key parts. Led by DC Jim Leonard, expect Wisconsin to plug those holes and have one of the best defenses in the conference again.

Look, the Big Ten West is all about parity this season. I expect Iowa and Minnesota to be right there with Wisconsin and you shouldnt discredit Northwestern, Nebraska, and others. I dont see any team from this division reaching a double digit win total, Wisconsin included. Gimme the Under.

My Prediction: UNDER

Iowa Hawkeyes Season Preview | The College Football Experience (Ep. 711)

Iowa could be in store for a special 2021. Last year, they lost their first two games before ripping off six in a row to end the season. Whats most impressive about the winning streak is the fact that the Hawkeyes averaged over 35 points per game in that stretch. For a program that usually relies on tough defense and a ball-controlled offense, this level of scoring output was a breakthrough.

QB Spencer Petras, leading rusher Tyler Goodson, and TE Sam LaPorta are back but theres a lot of other holes to fill. Only two starters return on the OL and Iowa is replacing its top two pass catchers from last year. Its Iowa so I wouldnt be too concerned about the line, but playmakers on the outside need to step up. A slight decline in offensive production might be on the horizon.

Defensively, this Hawkeye unit only gave up 16 points a game last year and eight starters return. There will be some shuffling up front but the back seven will be strong. Watch out for Ss Jack Koerner and Dane Belton who lead one of the best secondaries in the conference. Itll be another strong year for the Iowa D.

Entering his 23rd year as HC, Kirk Ferentz has had an excellent career in Iowa City but hes only registered nine or more regular-season wins six times. Looking at the schedule, immediately circle the week 2 matchup vs Iowa State. While Iowa will most likely be a slight dog playing in Ames, it will be a fantastic in-state showdown of two potential top 10 teams.

Overall, its a challenging but manageable slate of games. I have faith in the coach, the program, and the QB to reach 9 Ws this season and edge out an Over. Look out for Iowa to contend for the Big Ten West Title.

My Prediction: OVER

Entering his 4th year as head coach, is this the season Scott Frost and the Cornhuskers put it all together? Success in Lincoln has been much more elusive for Frost than it was at UCF where he went 19-7 over two seasons. So far, his records at Nebraska have been 4-8, 5-7, and 3-5. Hes a legend in Lincoln, but he better start winning soon.

While theres a new Offensive Coordinator in town, we know Adrian Martinez will be the QB. Hes shown flashes but needs to work on consistency and limiting turnovers. Hell also need to get better production from the skill positions and an offensive line that only returns three starters. Theres some transfers coming in but a lot of question marks on this side of the ball remain.

The defense was fairly average last year but the Cornhuskers are bringing back nine starters which should offer hope for 2021. They may not wow you with next-level talent, but its an experienced group that plays rock-solid football. For a D that finished 7th in Points Allowed in 2020, the realistic expectation should be to crack the top 5 this season.

Looking at the schedule, road trips to Oklahoma, Minnesota, and Wisconsin are rough. Plus, Nebraska isnt ready to knock off Ohio State even if its at home. Thats four losses before mentioning other challenging games vs the likes of Iowa, Michigan, and Northwestern. This Nebraska squad hasnt shown me enough to expect 7 wins. Six and a bowl game is attainable, but Im on the Under.

My Prediction: UNDER

Pat Fitzgerald and company had a fantastic 2020. The Wildcats went 6-1 in the regular season, made the Big Ten Champ game (lost to Ohio State) and beat Auburn in the Citrus Bowl. Fitzgerald is one of the best coaches in America and continually gets the most out of his rosters. However, there will be some challenges to overcome this season.

First off, QB Peyton Ramsey and the Wildcats top four pass catchers from last year have all departed. It sounds like Clemson-transfer Hunter Johnson is the front runner to win the QB job and theres some transfers coming in at wideout. The OL will also have to replace a couple starters from last year but the RB position should be locked up with Cam Porter back in Evansville.

Defensively, Northwestern had one of the top units in the conference last year but only five starters return. Additionally, long-time DC Mike Hankwitz has retired. Youd expect Pat Fitzgerald to figure things out on this side of the ball but theres a talent deficiency. Expect some regression.

While this may be a rebuilding year, the relatively easy schedule will make things interesting. First, the Wildcats will be favored in all three non-con games vs Indiana State, Ohio and Duke. NW has a history of dropping games to inferior opponents, so these arent gimmies but they should be 3-0 outside the league.

Second, getting the Michigan schools and Rutgers from the East is a blessing. This isnt going to be a double-digit win team that plays in the Big Ten Champ game but it also shouldnt be the 3-9 team from 2019 either. In general, Fitzgerald has brought in enough talent via the transfer portal to offset some of the losses. The win total is in the right spot but much like Iowa, I tend to have faith in this program. Im a lean on the Over.

My Prediction: OVER

While Bret Bielema could never get things going at Arkansas, dont forget about his 68-24 record in seven seasons at Wisconsin. Hes familiar with the Big Ten West and should be a slam dunk hire for an Illinois program that has hit rock bottom. The only question is how long it will take to right the ship.

As with most coaching changes, there was a sizeable roster overhaul in the offseason. One familiar face will be returning QB, Brandon Peters. Hell lead an offense that also returns four starting offensive lineman, two solid RBs and WR Brian Hightower. A couple veterans return on defense and thats where the experience stops. There are fresh faces from the transfer portal everywhere else.

While it would be nice to have a couple cupcakes to start the season, Illinois jumps right into the fray with a home game vs Nebraska. Also, dont chalk up the Week 2 game vs UTSA as an easy win. Then, theres a road trip to UVA in Week 3. Thats a rough start for a roster that needs to build cohesiveness.

If you are thinking of taking the Over, the Illini need to beat UTSA, Charlotte, Maryland and register another upset within the league. While brighter days may be ahead, I dont see it happening in 2021. Im on the UNDER.

My Prediction: UNDER

This Boilermaker program has seemingly been stuck in mediocrity or worse since Joe Tiller was head coach. The last time they won more than 7 regular season games was 2006 when Curtis Painter was the QB. Current HC, Jeff Brohm, had back to back 6-6 regular seasons in 2017 and 2018 but those campaigns were followed by losing seasons. Entering his 5th year, its safe to say that Purdue better make a bowl game or Brohm may be a goner.

Offensively, eight starters return from the conferences best passing attack from a season ago. Rondale Moore is now in the NFL, but both Jack Plummer and Aidan OConnell are capable QBs who will often look in the direction of leading WR, David Bell.

The offensive line will be solid and theres some decent options at RB led by Zander Horvath and King Doerue. While a more balanced offensive approach may pay dividends, Purdue might opt to sling to rock all over the field again.

The Boilermaker D was about average last year, finishing 8th best in the Big Ten. There are some holes to fill but theres also a solid amount of talent and experience returning. The biggest addition might be new defensive coordinator, Brad Lambert. Under his guidance, look for this unit to make strides this season.

Looking at the schedule, the week 1 game at home vs Oregon State is huge. Win that, and Purdue should start 3-1 before the meat of the conference schedule picks up. Games against Notre Dame, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Ohio State are probable losses which means there isnt much room left for error in the other 50/50 matchups.

Theres a high chance Purdue hits 5 right on the number which leaves us with the question: is it more probable this group wins six games or four? Sorry Boilermakers, but theres a narrative where this train completely falls off the tracks and Brohm is bounced in the process. Im on the Under.

Jeff Jarrett On Working With Larry The Cable Guy: Hes As Funny Off-Camera As He Is On – Wrestlezone

Posted: at 1:29 pm

Jeff Jarrett has lived quite the life outside of the squared circle.

The WWE Hall of Famer recently spoke with Spencer Love of Love Wrestling and discussed what it was like to work with comedic legend Larry The Cable Guy.

Blue Collar Comedy! That was a lot of fun. Just the different opportunities that come out of being around this business. I did a cameo in Spring Breakers. My kids are Selena Gomez fans, and we go and Spring Breakers was NOT a Disney movie if youve ever seen that. When you look at that, or Blue Collar Comedy, Life with Mikey, Head of State with Chris Rock, all the different kinds of movies and TV shows and opportunities. Traveling over to Abu Dhabi and eating a meal with the royal family. Just the opportunities, literally, its just crazy, sort of the life Ive been blessed with. Blue Collar Comedy [and] Larry the Cable Guy, that is one I can say this, hes as funny off-camera as he is on.

What Saif Said To Me When We Discussed Having Kids – by Kareena Kapoor Khan – NDTV

Posted: at 1:29 pm

Cover of 'Kareena Kapoor Khan's Pregnancy Bible'

I am extremely passionate about whatever I do, whether it's getting in front of the camera eating a 12-inch pepperoni pizza or writing this book. I do everything with determination and grit. I jumped at the idea of doing this book. I want you and every woman to know that things for me were just as normal (or difficult) as they are for you.

I had the same paranoias as every other mom-to-be, the same crazy symptoms, the same fears. And I also had the same excitement, the same wonder too. With this book I wanted you to be part of my journey and know that being pregnant is an amazing thing. And I also wanted to create a book that would give you the most authoritative and useful information not just about your trimesters but on issues such as postpartum depression, breastfeeding woes, nutrition, self-care and even on exactly what to shop for (I overdid it with Taimur!).

People think a celebrity pregnancy is super glamorous. And I did try and make it look like that when I was out and about! But I didn't feel that glamorous - who does when they are pregnant? I gained a lot of weight, got pregnancy spots and was ready to sleep by five every evening! Sounds familiar? In this book, I have been totally honest about everything I went through, from my crazy eating to fainting on a photo shoot out of exhaustion. I hope it will make you smile and comfort you too.

I decided when I got pregnant that I wouldn't hide anything. I was out there being as normal as I possibly could. And I wanted to bring that same spirit to this book. I am also super proud that I carried on my work right to the very end. Even though I have to admit I pushed myself too hard during Jeh's time.

The truth is I love being a mom. And I love acting. And I didn't want to give up on anything, even through my pregnancy. In fact after I got married, I did think hard about my decision to have a family. I thought people would see me differently.

But Saif told me I could do it all. He and I have worked hard to build a strong foundation for our relationship, and I truly believe my kids will always have that to stand on. And, hopefully, Jeh will be as confident as Taimur, because of his parents.

My mother-in-law was also among the first to tell me that I had to keep working. Her advice was to do whatever I wanted but with confidence. She did some great work in the movies after her marriage and kids and was a real inspiration. My mother is also a strong role model for me, and she and my father both told me I must keep at it. So I thought what the heck! I plunged headlong into not one but two pregnancies and I now have these two tots in my life who make every day feel a little crazy, a little special, a little exhausting, and a little rewarding.

And so here I am - writing these words, working, being a mommy, being active, being real. You know, my life often feels like the tree pose - where you're balancing on one leg. I think women do that beautifully.

I remember when I first held Taimur to my chest, properly, after the anaesthesia and grogginess had faded. My little boy became real to me that moment. The moment of birth I think for so many of us is too hazy. The reckoning comes later. As I held my little baby, smelling his infant smells, aware of how fragile and precious he was, I told myself I'd do it on my own, on my terms.

I set my own rules for Taimur, and those will apply for Jeh too. It was simple - to do the best I could and relax. I wasn't the most perfect mom the first time around. There is joy in messing up. I didn't know how to clean Taimur's poop or put on his diaper properly in the beginning. His pee leaked so often because his mother didn't secure his diaper perfectly. But here is some advice - mother to mother: it's about you and your comfort; do what is easy, do what works. When a mother is confident and comfortable, the baby senses it too.

It's why I returned to work so quickly. You've got to do what you've got to do. I knew I wanted to work till the day I popped and as soon as I could after. That being a mom was never going to be my only identity. Returning to work post-baby was heart- wrenching. I am sure that's the case with most mothers who get back to work. I remember leaving Taimur behind and going to night shoots with a crew of 150 people. I was so torn - trying to be professional on the shoot, while aching for my baby.

I have jumped back into my commitments soon after having Jeh too, though I definitely feel less rushed. It's normal to feel guilty. But trust me when I say Taimur doesn't love me any less today because I got my life back soon after I had him, and neither will Jeh. There is nothing like doing what you want to do. I will have one kid at my hand and another in my lap. I will be a mom and I will go back to work. I will rock all of it.

I am also so happy and grateful that I had my mother's help with Taimur. Yes, she is older now, which means Jeh is a challenge. She may be less hands-on, but she is a pair of reliable eyes for me, and I take much comfort in that.

We women place so much pressure on ourselves - we want to do it all. But everyone needs a little help. Take it. Hold that hand. Whether it's from family or household help. I would not have been half as functional without the help of my nurse who guided me through Taimur's time and is now with me for Jeh too. I am deeply grateful for both the women who helped me look after my babies and for the domestic staff who have looked after me and my family all these years. Saif and I are both working parents. Our lives would hardly be possible without them. And I want you to know that I don't have to be on Instagram putting a child to my breast to prove I am a hands-on mom. I just do the best I can, every single day.

You know, I was relaxed because I was prepared for both my kids and I had my rules in place. I am quite a freak when it comes to being organized! Of course, nothing fully prepares you for the actual birth and a live, kicking baby in your arms. There are so many unknowns. And there are so many things to which I still don't know how I will react. But that's what being a mom is. I always wanted kids. And I married the man I love. My kids are a symbol of my love, my life and my commitment. I may keep making mistakes. But I will power through.

LIVE: GCSE results day in Slough, Windsor and Maidenhead – Windsor Express

Posted: at 12:41 am

It's a school results bonanza this week with GCSE students finding out their grades after anunprecedentedtwo years of studying in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year, GCSE grades will be calculated on teacher assessments of student performance in the absence of exams.

But it is worth remembering that grades will continue to be ranked 1 to 9 as opposed to the old scale of A* to U.

You can find out how the schools in your area got on below:

9.56am:Good morning. You wait all year for a results day and then two come along at once. It's a move that has left bedraggled local news reporters tearing their hair out across the country but these are the cards that have been dealt.

We'll be keeping you updated throughout the day with reaction and photographs from our schools in Maidenhead, Windsor and Slough.

10.00am:A quick reminder on the current GCSE grading system (for my benefit as well as yours). GCSE results are now graded 1 to 9 with a Grade 4 now representing a standard pass.

Grade 9 is now the top mark that can be achieved and is set above the former A* which could be achieved pre-2019.

10.07am:

Wexham School, Wexham:This years GCSE results represented a continued trend of improvement at Wexham School, says headteacher Lawrence Smith.

The Norway Drive School has announced a 95 per cent pass rate with 56 per cent of students securing a grade 4 or above in English and maths.

A total of 67 per cent of grades were grade 4 or above in English with 62 per cent meeting that mark in maths.

Mr Smith said: These are a well-deserved set of results that reflect the hard work and commitment of students during these exceptional times.

These results also mark a continued trend over the last four years of increasing results at Wexham which I am very proud that my students and staff are achieving.

10.15am:

Altwood School, Maidenhead:75 per cent of students have achieved a grade 4 or above in Maths with 71 per cent achieving the same measure in English.

A total of 20 per cent of all grades were awarded at grade 7, 8 or 9, the top grades.

Notable student successes included Amelie Sauvage who secured nine grade 9s and one grade 8.

Harry Scrivens also reaped the rewards of his hard work by securing eight grade 9s and one grade 8.

Headteacher, Neil Dimbleby, said: I am incredibly proud of our students for achieving a very strong set of results, reflecting the efforts they made across the two years of study, despite all the disruption they faced.

The hard work and commitment of staff and students is continuing to deliver a learning environment where students can thrive and reach their full academic potential.

My thanks and congratulations go to the students, parents and staff who have guided and supported our students throughout this important phase. We look forward to seeing these students flourish further in our sixth form.

Executive head teacher Kathleen Higgins says that her Year 11 students outcomes are well deserved, adding there was a great partnership between working from home and in the classroom.

The school has reported that many of its pupils have exceeded or achieved their target grades, with strong performances across a range of subjects.

This is an excellent set of results and we are so proud of our young people, said Ms Higgins.

Over time the young men and women of Year 11 have worked very hard and consequently these results have been earned and are very well deserved."

Headteacher Kamaldeep Nijjar said: We are delighted that our students have achieved such excellent outcomes as the culmination of their years of study with us.

The results are a fitting reward for the sustained hard work and determination they have shown and the wonderful support they received from our staff.

Despite the many challenges associated with the global pandemic, these exceptionaloutcomes will help to ensure that our pupils can proceed to their first choice sixth form with absolute confidence.

10.55am:

Desborough College, Maidenhead:The college has announced that it is pleased to report some outstanding achievements in its GCSE results this year.

A spokesperson for the college said that the Year 11 cohort had achieved pleasing results and added that it was delighted to see many pupils planning to return for their sixth form studies.

Maggie Callaghan, the colleges principal said: We are immensely proud of all the work and achievements of our students, especially after such a difficult and disrupted year.

Our teachers have worked tirelessly with love and passion to ensure students are all able to progress onto further education and study, and we look forward to seeing what they will achieve in the future.

11.10am:

What a summer its been for the Dean family. First Tom secured two memorable Gold medals in the pool at the Tokyo Olympics and now younger brother William has put in a performance deserving of the podium in his GCSEs.

Here he is alongside Maya Jefferson at Burnham Grammar School after finding out he secured nine grade 9s and one grade 8. Congrats!

11.15am:

Furze Platt Senior School, Maidenhead:Furze Platt has congratulated its students amazing results after much uncertainty and disruption.

The school said that the grades achieved had demonstrated resilience, ambition and versatility following a year of lockdown and remote learning.

Like several schools in the town, Furze Platt has chosen not to release its pass rate information in the wake of the disruption of the previous academic year.

The schools headteacher, Dr Andrew Morrison, said: These fantastic results highlight the incredible way the Furze Platt Senior School community has worked together to support our young people.

Staff, parents, carers and students have had to overcome many obstacles in the last eighteen months as the pandemic impacted upon all aspects of our lives, including education.

These grades are the result of a fantastic, combined effort and I would like to thank all members of our community who have so ably contributed.

Like Furze Platt Senior School staff, I hope that our students and their families are delighted with their achievements.

11.38am:

Love this action shot from photographer Ian Longthorne at Windsor Girls' School this morning. Timing is everything.

11.45am:

Upton Court Grammar School, Slough:Almost half of the grades achieved by pupils at Upton Court Grammar School were either grade 8 or 9.

The school, in Lascelles Road, has reported that 45 per cent of grades were the equivalent of an A* with almost 70 per cent of grades between 7 and 9.

Every pupil secured a grade 5 or above in English and maths, the school added.

Nathanial Smith, Mohammaed Abbas and Srushti Valasang all achieved 11 grade 9s as well as the top grade in additional maths.

Headteacher Mark Pritchard said: "I am proud that, in addition to achieving top grades, Upton Court Grammar School ensures our young people develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values needed to be successful and engaged global citizens.

11.55am:

St Bernards Catholic Grammar School, Slough:An average grade of 7.5 was achieved at the school, with 99.2 per cent of students achieving a 9-5 in English and maths.

A total of 65.4 per cent of pupils got 9-7 in English and maths, with headteacher Paul Kassapian praising students and staff for their hard work during uncertain times.

Stand out youngsters include Krishan Sachdev and Sebastian Rohan, who both achieved a phenomenal 11 grade 9s; Nikola Christov and Ryan Valenzuela-Porta, who racked up 10 grade 9s and one grade 8; Acsah Alex, who achieved nine grade 9s and two grade 8s, and Stephanie Parkes and Orla Treanor, who opened their results to find nine grade 9s and three grade 8s.

We are very proud of how hard our students have worked to achieve these grades, said Mr Kassapian. Students at St Bernards always work hard, but this has especially been the case during these uncertain times and since the cancelation of public examinations.

Congratulationsto all our pupils. My thanks goes to our dedicated teaching and support staff. The support of our parents has been crucial too. They have worked closely with their children and the school during periods of lockdown, to ensure that high quality learning has continued.

12.45pm:

Holyport College, Holyport:40 per cent of students achieved an average grade of 7 or better across all of their GCSEs and nearly 90per cent completed the full range of subjects which makeup the English Baccalaureate.

Martha and Raghu both achieved grade 9 in all of their GCSEs, with Martha achieving a grade 9 in 11 subjects!

Headmaster, Ben McCarey, said: These results are a rightful vindication of all of their learning and endeavours and the students should be hugely proud of them.

This year especially, these results are about so much more than simply grades. So many of these young people have gone through incredible personal hardships over the past year and half.

They have missed out on opportunities, experiences and rites of passage alongside losing friends and family members.

Within this cohort of students, there are incredible stories of resilience, of the indomitable power of the human spirit and of the importance of friendship and community.

I sincerely hope that these results represent a turning point as we emerge from the deprivations of the pandemic; that they represent hope and a brighter future.

12.59pm:

St Joseph's Catholic High School, Slough:Nearly three quarters of students achieved at least five GCSEs at grade four or above, including English and maths, capping a high-performing year for the school.

St Josephs reported 72 per cent of this years cohort achieved the benchmark.

A total of 40 per cent gained the English Baccalaureate which covers English Language and Literature, maths, science, Spanish or French and either geography or history.

Headteacher Ciran Stapleton said: The students had to work extremely hard to earn these grades and we are sure they are a true reflection and a rounded account of what they can achieve which has been far greater than what the national expectation might have asked of them.

1:05pm:

Langley Grammar School, Langley: A total of 98 per cent of students achieved five of more grade 5s including English and maths.

And overall, 78 per cent of grades awarded were 9-7.

Head teacher John Constable said: We think the grades awarded are a fair reflection of students ability and dedication. All our students deserve congratulations for their hard work and commitment to their studies through what has been a very difficult period for everyone and with some particularly challenging circumstances for some.

We are very proud of them and wish them well for the next stage of their education.

1:09pm:

Advertiser photographer Nick Parford was at Altwood School in Maidenhead earlier to catch some smiling students.

Dr Ceska said: Our Year 11 cohort have been a credit to themselves, their families and their school. They have demonstrated exceptional maturity and, in spite of the many challenges of studying during the pandemic, their academic progress remained outstanding.

The excellent results of 2021 pay tribute to the students superb efforts together with the amazing support of staff and parents.

We wish all our Year 11s every success as they start their A-Level and BTEC courses in September.

All but two of Scotland’s offshore marine ‘protected’ areas are paper parks – Scottish Business News

Posted: August 11, 2021 at 12:38 pm

Data shows over 44,000 hours of fishing with bottom-towed gear in Scotlands Marine Protected Area network in 2020

ALL bar two of Scotlands 24 offshore benthic Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) were damaged by bottom-towed fishing gears in 2020, making their protected status mere lines on a paper map. Oceana recorded over 44,000 fishing hours using bottom-towed gear in inshore and offshore MPAs in the Scottish Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) in 2020. The analysis further shows that about 300 large bottom-trawlers and dredgers plough Scotlands protected seabed on a near-daily basis.

We are calling on Scottish Ministers to take urgent action to ban bottom-towed fishing gear in all of Scotlands Marine Protected Areas and reinstate the 3 nautical mile inshore trawl and dredge ban, said Melissa Moore, head of UK policy at Oceana. As well as being destructive, continued licensing of this activity is illegal under marine wildlife laws. Scotland needs to step up and protect its rich and diverse marine life. These damaging fishing methods also have a devasting impact on blue carbon habitats and ruin the fishing grounds of low-impact fishermen such as creelers.

Of the Scottish offshore MPAs, only the deep-sea Hatton-Rockall Basin and Hatton Bank MPAs, far off to the West of Scotland, were not bottom-trawled. Offshore MPAs impacted include the Southern Trench, where a staggering 13,000 hours of fishing with bottom-towed gear took place in 2020. During an expedition to the Southern Trench in 2017, Oceana documented 16species and seven habitat types that are considered priorities for conservation under Scottish or international frameworks. Key findings included kelp forests, reefs and other aggregations formed by ross worm, submerged caves, and sea pen and burrowing megafauna communities.

69 inshore MPAs in Scotland were also intensely disturbed. For example South Arran MPA, designated to protect ocean quahog, kelp and seagrass beds, maerl beds and burrowing bivalves, had 2,295 fishing hours. On the other hand, Moray Firth, with its important sandbanks and bottlenose dolphins, had 880 fishing hours recorded.

Bottom trawling and dredging are the most destructive methods to catch fish, causing a high impact on marine habitats, and effectively clear-cutting everything living on the seafloor.

This is not just an ecological disaster trawling adds to the climate emergency and urgently needs addressing ahead of COP 26. According to a recent study, fishing boats that trawl the ocean floorreleaseas muchcarbon dioxideinto the water column as the entire aviation industry releases into the atmosphere, and UK waters are especially impacted.

Using bottom-towed fishing gear often results in irreversible damage to sensitive habitats such as marl beds, coralligenous reefs, deep-sea coral reefs, gorgonian gardens and sponge grounds. Among the fish that are discarded by the bottom trawlers are often juveniles of valuable species, but also species of low or non-commercial interest, which are nevertheless important for the ecosystems equilibrium.

Bottom trawling has also seriously damaged fragile ecosystems like cold-water corals, which may be hundreds of years old but can be destroyed in the passing of a single bottom trawl. Once coral and sponge communities are destroyed, commercial fish and other species dependent on them for spawning, shelter, nurseries, protection and food, may also disappear.

Bob Weir and Wolf Bros Knock on the Golden Door at the Berkeley Greek – PopMatters

Posted: at 12:38 pm

Its a Saturday night in the Peoples Republic of Berkeley, and theres a buzz in the air, the likes of which havent been felt in two years.Bob Weir & Wolf Bros are here on 24 July to re-open the Berkeley Greek Theater with the legendary outdoor venues first show since 2019, which represents a big step forward for the Bay Area music scene.

With a capacity in the 8,500 range, this is the largest show in the region since the COVID-19 pandemic shut things down last year. The Greek is checking all ticket holders at the gates for proof of vaccination or a recent negative test and its a safety measure that helps music fans feel better about attending a show of this size. Its also one of the biggest shows that Weir & Wolf Bros have played to date, as the groups sonic evolution propels them from theaters to larger venues.

Launched in 2018 as a trio with bassist Don Was and drummer Jay Lane, Weir has utilized the trio format to explore Grateful Dead music in a more stripped-down form. That has enabled him to put a fresh spin on the Deads timeless songbook, as the trio conjures a cosmic cowboy sound that makes it feel sort of like traveling back in time to see Weir as a troubadour at a Wild West saloon in a bygone era.

Weir first burst onto the San Francisco scene in 1965 as the wide-eyed youngest member of the Grateful Dead, representing the youthful ideals of the 60s rock counterculture. The 21st century has seen him aging gracefully to take on the elder role that bandmate Jerry Garcia vacated upon his untimely departure from the Earth in 1995. The Wolf Bros also bring an extra level of charm to the stage that comes from watching Jay Lane play a drum kit lined with faux fur, while Don Was holds down the low end on upright bass grinning like an amiable pirate whos stumbled onto a treasure chest of sonic goodies.

And while a few outliers have been unable to bend their ear to hear the tune in this format, the Wolf Bros bluesy vibe has proven increasingly popular with the fan base. Theres even a sector of fans who have suggested theyve been digging Weir & Wolf Bros more than Weirs ongoing larger-scale efforts with Dead & Company. The appeal of the Wolf Bros project has only grown further in 2021, with Weir expanding the bands lineup in a monthly webcast series that started on New Years Eve.

The trios sound has evolved with the addition of pedal steel ace Greg Leisz, longtime compadre Jeff Chimenti on piano, and the Wolfpack Horns with Alex Kelly, Brian Switzer, Adam Theis, Mads Tolling and Sheldon Brown. The extra layers of instrumentation have helped Weir & Wolf Bros take their sound to a higher level, with a multidimensional flavor that enhances the core trio without overwhelming their cowboy trio vibe. The band made their 2021 debut to a live audience about six weeks earlier with a four-show run in Colorado, and now Bay Area music fans are salivating for their taste of the enhanced Wolf Bros lineup.

As showtime nears, some attendees are still feeling a bit anxious about being back in this large of a crowd setting. But with general admission seating in effect, theres still a sense of some loose social distancing. The Greek looks pretty full, but it doesnt feel packed. When Weir and his bandmates hit the stage in high energy fashion with the anthemic classic Not Fade Away, the crowd comes alive in the collective recall of a feeling that has felt forgotten. Theres an instantly triumphant sense of returning to a world where live rock n roll music brings the local community together in a way that nothing else can.

The band doesnt wait long to get into some genuine sonic alchemy with Cassidy, Weirs 1972 classic about letting your life proceed by its own design. The Wolfpack horns shine here as they will throughout the night, first enhancing the verse melodies before also providing the lead melodies on a soaring jam over a deep groove from the Wolf Bros rhythm section that gets the audience hooting with approval early on.

Another peak moment in the first set occurs with a combo that sees Garcias Friend of the Devil lead into Weirs Black-Throated Wind. Weirs heartfelt vocals stand out on both of the mid-tempo gems, while pedal steel guitarist Greg Leisz shows why hes worth his weight in sonic gold. The shimmery pedal steel melodies add an extra dimension of sweet bluesy tone science to the Wolf Bros sound here that dazzles the senses. The drink all day, rock all night line from Tennessee Jed wins a big cheer, while Leisz again boosts the song with some twangy fills. The big fun continues as the band welcomes Ramblin Jack Elliott to the stage for Muleskinner Blues, a Jimmy Reed tune with a bluesy honky-tonk flavor reminiscent of Bob Dylans Maggies Farm.

Weir ups the ante on the set closer with a magnificent performance of Weather Report Suite>Let it Grow, one of his most ambitious song combos. The intro with the pedal steel and Wolfpack Horns takes the Weather Report to a gorgeous level of sonic elegance, as Weir sings of the cycle of seasons here on the third stone from the sun. The energy level at the Greek soars as the band picks up the tempo when they move into Let It Grow, enhanced still further with the horns adding some spaghetti western-style melodies that lift the song to new heights.

Here we see Weirs skills as a bandleader evolving to the Jedi Master level. He could easily get away with playing these songs the same way as he has in the past, but the expanded band lineup pays off with a jackpot of sonic riches as fans hear these classic songs in a new light. In this way, Weir shows hes still devoted to seeking new ground, ever the trailblazer for the psychedelic rock counterculture since co-founding the Grateful Dead at age 16. The jam pushes the envelope, with Weir & Wolf Bros laying down a deep groove around the songs signature riff while the horns solo on top in a way that recalls the best of the collaborations between the Grateful Dead and renowned saxman Branford Marsalis.

The vibe at the Greek deepens as night falls for the second set, allowing the light show to shine. Fan favorite Scarlet Begonias is an early highlight, conjuring a joyous singalong with a festive audience that is clearly feeling it. The song doesnt receive the deeper jam treatment that Let It Grow did, but serves as a stepping stone to some dynamic explorations in a classic Playin in the Band / Uncle Johns Band / Playin in the Band jam sandwich.

Letting the horns fill the space traditionally occupied by a lead guitarist again enables a familiar tune like Playin to find new territory for another crowd-pleasing jam. The horns also allow the band to get into some jazzier territory, as with a brief jam on Miles Davis So What before segueing into Uncle Johns. When the Wolf Bros move back into Playin with the horns leading the way, theres a vibe that feels kind of like a mariachi cantina band celebrating the triumphant return of a hometown hero and so it is here with Bobby Weir.

Then just when fans might think the band has provided the centerpiece of the set, Weir steps it up again as the music turns on a dime into another classic with Estimated Prophet. The reggae-tinged intro sounds excellent here in the Berkeley night before the song builds to the triumphant chorus, as Weir sings out the seekers ode to rising up to paradise while knocking on the golden door right here in California. Weir again employs the horns for some jazzy improv as he adds his own dynamic accents on rhythm guitar to propel the uplifting jam.

Another smooth segue moves the set into the prototype 60s psychedelia of The Other One, which features some great sounds from the Wolfpack horns that lend the song a cinematic vibe. This in turn leads to the ever poignant Garcia ballad Standing on the Moon, which sounds even richer with that sweet pedal steel . Weir strikes a notable chord with the local audience as the melancholy protagonist on the moon sings of how hed rather be somewhere in San Francisco on a back porch in July. The set wraps with Weirs own Chuck Berry style rocker One More Saturday Night, re-invoking a raucous dance party vibe as this classic trio of songs makes it feel almost like a Grateful Dead show in the early 90s.

Thank you, youre too kind, Weir says to the adoring audience when the band returns for another singalong with a Ripple encore. A Not Fade Away reprise makes an emphatic statement, as Weir & Wolf Bros rev up the audience one more time in the same way they started the show. The Buddy Holly classic has long since transcended the songs original theme of romantic love, having come to represent the passion between the Grateful Dead and their ever devoted fanbase. Its a relationship that hit its golden anniversary with the Fare Thee Well stadium shows in 2015 and the mood here at the Greek tonight has shown that this love affair still shows no sign of fading.
