Times Square’s Newest Hotel Opens With a Yankees-Themed Steakhouse – Eater NY
Posted: April 29, 2022 at 4:03 pm
Adding to the recent resurgence around Times Square, another big chain hotel with a bevy of restaurants is opening in New York City where tourism, Broadway, and offices spaces converge. Hard Rock Hotel New York, which has been under construction for four years, opens its doors today at 159 West 48th Street, between Sixth and Seventh avenues.
Music is, of course, the thread weaving throughout the sprawling property, with multiple live performance spaces, memorabilia from icons like Alicia Keys and Lady Gaga prominently displayed, and subtle design touches like microphone light fixtures that pay homage to the hotels address along Music Row.
But food is set to be a focal point as much as the music, according to executive chef Oscar Gonzalez. Rather than a single restaurant, three of the venues here feature distinct dining options: a steakhouse with unexpected twists, a rooftop bar offering globally-influenced small bites, and a lobby restaurant whose star is a roving bagel-and-lox cart.
I see it as an epicurean destination where you walk in and you have different elements, says Gonzalez, who brings 20-plus years of experience in high-end hotel restaurants like the Four Seasons.
The 446-room hotel features five kitchens with 40 chefs. Gonzalez says he spent months creating the menus from scratch and building up relationships with nearby farms to offer local and seasonal produce.
If theres a featured culinary act, its NYY Steak. Situated around the corner from the main hotel entrance, just past the swag-filled Rock Shop, the steakhouse seats up to 130 diners. There, Yankees memorabilia, dry-aged beef, and a vegetarian tasting menu come together for a nostalgic-meets-modern feel.
By having a butchery and dry age room on site as well as sourcing the beef from the farm within two days of it being slaughtered, Gonzalez says its one way NYY Steak is setting itself apart from chain steakhouses. The menu includes tenderloin cuts as well as long bones (a 56-ounce steak for two) and porterhouse steaks.
Offerings like steak tartare and bone marrow may sound expected, but the veteran chef says hes aiming to modernize classics. For instance, theres a scallop dish accompanied by hand-ground Carolina grits that requires 12 finishing steps, including an elaborate fennel pollen and burnt ash.
Its technique-driven cuisine, so that its not your average steakhouse opening down the street, he says. What sets it apart is were doing a lot of fermentation, a lot of pickling Were doing a lot of perfumes, essences, and dashis that were marinating proteins with. Its going to the next level.
Hard Rock has also partnered with the Yankees, so the famed baseball teams presence dominates the decor, from paneled walls with past players autographs to leather seating in the Yankees signature blue. This is also a return home of sorts for NYY Steak, which was open near Rockefeller Center for about five years before closing in 2018.
This time around, theres a meatless, three-course tasting menu ($65), which will draw from produce grown specifically for Hard Rock by a farm in Pennsylvania. Gonzalez says vegetables have lately become the center of attention on the plate and it was unexpected move to devote an entire menu to that shift. Being a steakhouse, diners can add a protein to each dish or keep it vegetarian.
Another steakhouse staple Gonzalez is experimenting with is the Caesar salad. At NYY Steak, the classic salad will be prepared tableside by servers using a double-sided cart that was custom created by RCP Design in Brooklyn.
I call it the Lexus of food carts, he says. You actually have a filtration of water going through so it keeps the lettuce fresh as it moves through the dining hall. And theres a magnitude of options there mustards, oils, salts, anchovies and then our egg yolks are pasteurized in house where servers are making the dressing in front of you. They cut the salad at the root there, toss it all together, plate it, shave the parmesan cheese tableside.
The custom cart theme also is a central part of the experience at Sessions, the Hard Rocks all-day lobby restaurant and bar, courtesy of a brightly-colored cart devoted to bagels and lox that Gonzalez says allows guests to pimp your bagel. The accompaniments include five different spreads, two types of caviar, and bacon thats caramelized in brown sugar.
Thirty-four levels up, RT60 Rooftop Bar & Lounge, is devoted to shareable plates that incorporate Japanese techniques and spices from Peru and Chile. For instance, the grilled shishito peppers are topped with puffed rice for crunch and a burnt crema, and blooming king trumpet mushrooms come with both a pesto and guajillo furikake.
Were putting it all together and its created a really fun opportunity for our customers, Gonzalez says.
In that way, he says the hope is to provide a range of dining options that suit the afterwork crowds, theater goers en route to a Broadway show, and of course, people visiting and staying in the center of New York City.

The Guess Who Tried to Force the Who to Change Their Name – Ultimate Classic Rock
Posted: at 4:03 pm
Former Guess Who guitarist Randy Bachman said his old bandtried to force the Who to change their name.
Although the Guess Who enjoyed their greatest success from 1969 through 1974, the Canadian rockers formed several years earlier and released their first album as "the Guess Who?" in 1966.Before that, they released two albums as Chad Allan and the Expressions in 1965 the same year the Who released their debut, My Generation though the words "Guess Who?" featured prominently on the cover of their sophomore LP, Hey Ho (What You Do to Me!).
Considering this timeline, one can see why Bachman might accuse the British rockers of encroaching on their territory. "When I was in the Guess Who, we found out about this English band calledthe Whoand were determined to force them to change their name," Bachman recently told Classic Rock. "So, we were in London, and the Who were playing at the Marquee club. Down we went to confront them. They were being filmed for German TV at that show, so we had to wait around for about four hours.
"Eventually, we get to meet them and say: 'Look, we were here before you. So, change your name, it's confusing people,'" Bachman continued. "Pete Townshendlooked at us and replied: 'There's the Yardbirds and the Byrds. Nobody's confused by that. So bugger off.'"
Despite their inauspicious introduction, the Guess Who and the Who later became "great friends," according to Bachman. "And that phrase 'bugger off' was our in-joke," he added. "We'd check into a hotel and find out the Who were there, so we'd call up one of the guys at 3AM and when they answered we would say: 'Bugger off!' then hang up. They'd do the same to us."
Bachman first left the Guess Who in 1970 following the release of their biggest LP,American Woman, and went on to enjoy success in Bachman-Turner Overdrive.TheGuess Whohave continued in variouslineups for the past 50-plus years, withdrummerGarry Peterson as the sole remaining original member.
Here's a chronological look at the 100 best rock albums of the '60s.

J.Rockett announces the El Hombre | Guitar.com | All Things Guitar – Guitar.com
Posted: April 15, 2022 at 12:59 pm
J.Rockett has announced the release of a new overdrive pedal, the El Hombre.
Based on the tones of the Texas legend Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), the El Hombre is inspired by the Tres Hombres and Fandango! albums. The pedal is stated to capture the nuances and touch sensitivity of an amp, while producing classic bluesy tones made famous by the guitarist.
The pedal features three controls, volume, gain and bite, with the bite control giving you the freedom to alter the drive style, producing a more aggressive style when turned up and a smoother tone when turned down.
With top-mounted connections, this pedal displays a very dynamic overdrive, with what J. Rockett describe as THE Texas Blues tone.
In a statement, J. Rockett has said: The El Hombre was sort of a happy accident if you will. We were heavily listening to early ZZ Top records at the time such as ZZ Tops (First Album), Tres Hombres and Fandango. This was right around the time we lost Eddie Van Halen (R.I.P).
We had learned how influenced Van Halen was by ZZ Top and we were truly listening to the music to hear those influences. It was quite remarkable how you can hear similarities not only in the guitar but in the backing vocals and the overall vibe of the music.
J. Rockett was first formed in 2006, and this marks the first pedal since the release of the Analogue Bucket Brigade in 2021.

Rosala Heads Up This Week’s Beauty Looks Of The Week – Wonderland Magazine
Posted: at 12:59 pm
From reimagined eyeshadow moments to Barbie beats, Rosala, Bimini Bon Boulash and Storm Reid drop the bank holiday beauty inspo in this weeks beauty round-up.
To the delight of, well, everyone, the bank holiday is finally here. With that being said we are going to go ahead and assume that you have a hectic few days of socialising ahead of you, all of which will require some gram-worthy beauty looks. Well, fear not as this weeks beauty round-up has a look appropriate for every occasion brought to you by some of your favourite names.
From Barbie-inspired full coverage glam to eccentric eyeshadow done correctly, head below to see the likes of Rosala, Bimini Bon Boulash and more in this weeks Beauty Looks of the Week
Rosala introduced us to our new favourite eye look
IG: @rosalia.vt
The only way to start this weeks round-up off was with a quick shout out to our reigning beauty queen, Rosala. Now, the singers subtle beat, glassy nails and soap brows in her latest pic may have tricked you into thinking this is a moment unworthy of a spot on our coveted round-up, but the eye art that features elevates it to the status of one of our favourite from the week. With two fine-yet-dramatic lines of crimson shadow sweeping underneath the artists eyebrows, a silhouette akin to the fox-like snatch of winged eyeliner presents itself, giving the otherwise-subtle look some serious elevation. Simple but statement-making, Rosala just dropped our go-to festival beat for this summer, and for that we are thankful.
Storm Reid lets us know that inner eye shadow is here to stay
IG: @stormreid
We all remember when Kylie Jenner broke the internet with her inner eye shadow. Having us reaching for our most psychedelic eyeshadow palettes and littering our feeds as every celebrity and their mother gave us their personal take on the look, it really was a makeup hack of the moment. Well, Euphoria actress Storm Reid is here to prove that it still is. Dropping a candid selfie on her Instagram, the actor served up glazed doughnut lips, snatched liner and seamlessly carved brows, all of which accompanied the star of the show: a flash of bubblegum pink eyeshadow. BRB, we are just dusting off our eyeshadow brushes and neon palettes.
Bimini Bon Boulash was a Barbie babes
IG: @biminibabes
If a full coverage look is what you are aiming to achieve ahead of a bank holiday spent partying the days and nights away, Bimini Bon Boulash has got you. Serving up old-school and high-intensity glam this week, the Ru Pauls Drag Race star turned to a dusty rose gold colour palette which trickled into a glossy nude lip, warm blush and striking shimmery lid, all of which contributed to the Hollywood-esque air surrounding the look. With a Barbie pink dress beautifully highlighting the hue of choice here, Bimini had us wanting to rock all pink everything for the foreseeable.
Uglyworldwide brought the heat with her beat-meets-art weather map
IG: @uglyworldwide
We are always expecting the unexpected when it comes to avant garde model and makeup extraordinaire uglyworldwide. But, even then, her latest look was one to be remembered. Painting a literal heat map onto her face yes, you heard us correctly the Instagram sensation blurred deep blue and red hues with shocking yellows in a display of facepaint akin to art. With a peroxide blonde pixie cut sharply juxtaposing the artistic display, it becomes practically impossible to look away. We will definitely be trying our hand at some facepaint this bank holiday!
The old met the new in Dove Camerons latest look
IG: @dovecameron
To round off this weeks list we thought wed give you a look at the beauty trip that was Dover Camerons latest display. Throwing it all the way back, the actress turned to the Kim K approved wet look as her new brunette locks radiated an effortless energy synonymous with the hair trend that once dominated our feeds. But, in a bid to transport the look into the now, Cameron turned to the ingenious minds over at Euphoria for a black, crystal-adorned eyeliner moment that would have Maddy and Cassie quaking in their Prada boots. Transcendent of eras, Dove killed with this most recent display.

How the role of the radiologist might change in the coming years was a hot topic of discussion at this years ECR Overture from March 2-6. Methods for easing workloads, whether radiologists should become more specialized and the value in attending more multi-disciplinary team meetings (MTDs) were all areas of debate. Experts also considered the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on radiology departments over the coming years.
Introducing a session entitled the Role of the Radiologist in 2030, Prof Regina Beets-Tan, chair of the Department of Radiology at the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam, said:
Even though this seems so far away it is actually just around the corner and we had better be preparedit is important to look at how we can add value to radiology.
Prof Andrea GraceRockall, Clinical Chair of Radiology, Imperial College London, and Hon Consultant Radiologist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and the Royal Marsden Hospital, highlighted results from a recent ESR survey among radiologists. She explained:
Some 80% of radiologists believe radiologists should have a mandatory period of non-radiology clinical experience before or during radiology training. Over 90% felt it was important to have an area of subspecialization and we can also see this as a trend for the future.
Other likely trends saw possible increased training for the communication of bad news and significant imaging findings to the patient and workloads continuing to be heavy burden but with AI potentially able to assist.
Prof EmanueleNeri, Associate Professor at the Department of Translational Research and New Technologies in Medicine and Surgery,University of Pisa, stressed:
I will say clearly that we will not be replaced in our tasks by AI. One of the main impacts of AI will be in the workflow: prioritizing examinations and helping in image acquisition in terms of quality of images. I think this could save time. There are already tools that allow us to improve interpretation, but this has to be looked at very carefully because, at the end, the responsibility is always at the hands of the radiologist.
There was much discussion about the radiologist being brought into more MTD meetings by 2030. Prof Neri highlighted the problem of heavy workloads for the radiologist. He observed:
It is important not only to have enough time to attend the meetings but also to interpret results first.
And Prof Geerard LBeets, surgeon at the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam, agreed. He said:
Radiology is important throughout the whole journey of the cancer patient and where it materializes is in the MDT meeting. It isnt helpful if the radiologist is only seeing the results for the first time, but it really adds to the discussion if they have had that time to interpret them beforehand. Sometimes it even changes the course of the discussion.
CarolineJustich and ErikBriers, of the ESRPatient Advisory Group, highlighted potential changes to the role of the radiologist by 2030 that could assist the patient.Ms. Justich said:
There is very little time for patients communication because of working non-stop. Our hope as patients is that AI will ease that a little bit and bring radiologists more into the focus of curing, with all the early diagnosis and treatments that might be possible in the future.
Mr. Briers added:
More subspecialization among radiologists would speed the processes up.
The concept of training more radiology assistants in the future was also debated. These members of staff could do all the preparation required before an MTD meeting, for example. Prof Rockall stressed:
We have a lot of extended role radiography in the UK. Because of real workforce pressures in the country, and some really expert and expertly trained radiographers, extended roles are seen as a real benefit to a department.

RAF Chinook Helicopter Airlifts Massive New Radar Onto The Top Of Gibraltar Rock – The Aviationist

On Mar. 2, 2022, a RAF Chinook helicopter carried out a pretty peculiar mission when it delivered a new radar to the top of the Gibraltar rock. The ATC radar of RAF Gibraltar airfield, that serves also as the commercial airport of the British Overseas Territory, is located at the top of the iconic rock. The radar needed to be replaced, a task that could not be completed by road, as the roads to the top of the rock are too narrow for ground transportation.
For this reason, a RAF Chinook helicopter (ZA680) was flown from the UK via Portugal and undertook the lift of the massive radar, a 11.8 meter structure weighting over 8,000 kg, to the summit, site of the former Rock Gun Battery.
The Aviationists contributorDavid Parody took the stunning photos of the Chinook helicopter at work during the radar lift operation at the summit of the Rock.
According to Aquila Air Traffic Management Services that delivered the new radar to serve RAF Gibraltar, the new radar was transported as an underslung load by the Chinook in four parts. The radars rotational turning gear, two large antennae and the horn the transmit and receive section of the antenna were each lifted in four separate journeys. Also flown to the top of the Rock was a new navigational beacon.
A temporary helicopter landing platform was built at Rock Gun Battery especially for the operation. The platform allowed the helicopter to land the loads above the rough and protected ground of the nature reserve, that is known for the apes that populate the Rock and are a major tourist attraction.
The lift was originally scheduled for Nov. 21, 2021, but the operation had to be postponed due to bad weather and rescheduled.
The upgrade to RAF Gibraltars Air Traffic Management system is part of an MOD wide 1.5 billion GBP investment in to air traffic management systems, known as Programme Marshall. The programme includes a 400 million GBP investment in advanced surveillance radars and a wide range of sophisticated equipment such as tower systems, new surveillance and navigation aids and radios, with the purpose to ensure increased reliability for air traffic management, improved safety and estimated savings of 317 million GBP for the MOD over the course of the 22-year partnership with Aquila to support the new equipment.
