NASA has awarded a total of $535,000 to seven teams that competed in the agencysSpace Robotics Challenge. The teams developed code to help advance state-of-the-art autonomous robotics for future space exploration missions.

This final round of the challenge opened in January. Each team was led by a U.S. citizen, an eligibility requirement of the competition. Teams coordinated and coded various robotic systems within a virtual, simulated lunar environment. The virtual robots needed to locate, collect, and haul resources to their home base on the Moon all without human interference. A panel of subject matter experts from NASA and industry scored each team based on the number of resources the autonomous bots identified, excavated, and delivered to their targeted base.

The seven winning teams in ranked order of prize package are:

Olympus Mons, a team of individuals in Barcelona, Spain ($185,000)

Robotika in Space, a team of individuals in Annapolis, Maryland ($125,000)

Team Adelaide, a team of students and faculty of the University of Adelaide in Australia ($75,000)

Walk Softly, a solo competitor in Niskayuna, New York ($50,000)

Whalers, a team of individuals in Nantucket, Massachusetts ($40,000)

Team Mountaineers, a team of students and faculty of West Virginia University in Morgantown ($30,000)

Future Robotics Lab, a team of individuals in Franklin, North Carolina ($30,000)

The winning teams offered different approaches to solving the challenge. Strategies included deploying spiral and zig-zag search patterns, enabling multi-robot communications, taking advantage of sunlight for power, and coordinating robots working nearby.

First-place team Olympus Mons focused on gathering material from the lunar surface while ensuring the integrity of their rovers throughout the operation. They built a squad of six rovers to search the simulated area, excavate, and haul materials. The teams strategy used a central system to coordinate the efforts of the individual rovers and make high-level decisions. That allowed the rovers to focus on a subset of specific tasks.

Robotika in Space, the second-place team, built two independent trios of robots each consisting of one scout, one excavator, and one hauler. Each group of robots explored and excavated half of the simulated surface, traveling in semicircle patterns to locate resources. Once the scout located the resources, it signaled the excavator and hauler bots to gather and transport the materials.

Team Adelaide won third place by developing two scouts, two excavators, and two haulers. They separated the six bots into two independent teams. Each team was responsible for processing half of the simulated lunar surface. The scout bots followed a spiral pattern, followed by slower excavator and hauler bots. When the scout detected resources, the excavator and hauler robots would obtain and move the resources.

Autonomous robotic systems like those developed for this challenge could assist future astronauts during long-duration surface missions, allowing humans to focus on the more meticulous areas of exploration, Monsi Roman, program manager for NASAs Centennial Challenges, said.

Phase 1 of the challenge, completed in June 2017,focused on NASAsR5 humanoid robotoperating ina virtual Marsenvironment. It consisted of twochallengerounds andtaskedcompetitors with advancing humanoid robot dexterity so robots could work better alongside, even without, astronauts.

Phase 2 also consisted of two rounds: qualification and final competition. In the qualification round, teams were given three separate in-situ resource utilization tasks to complete in a simulated lunar environment. Out of 114 registered teams,22 advancedto the finale, where they built upon their software to demonstrate autonomous operations over an ongoing mission.

The Space Robotics Challenge is supported by subject matter experts at NASAs Johnson Space Center. The competition is a Centennial Challenge and part of the Prizes, Challenges, and Crowdsourcing program within NASAs Space Technology Mission Directorate. Centennial Challenges, managed at Marshall Space Flight Center, bridge the innovation gap between NASA and the nation by stimulating research and technology solutions inside and outside of the traditional aerospace community.

Amazon is hijacking our emotions to put robots in our homes – The Verge

There's something in our complicated human brains that immediately develops a connection to anything with eyes. Don't believe me? Ask the Anki Vector that lived on my desk for several months. This pocket-sized robot got my attention with its bulbous, non-threatening body. But the second it looked up at me with a quizzical look in its eyes and uttered my name, I knew I would die for this tiny forklift. Its worth noting that the Anki Vector can be programmed to do a variety of things if you have the time to mess around with an SDK, but I brought this robot home because it was cute, not because I needed a project.

Id watch with amusement as the little gadget puttered around my desk, occasionally looking back at me as if seeking my approval, and I couldnt help but think that this sensation is exactly what Amazon is trying to replicate with its recently announced Astro home robot.

While the utility of the Astro is currently up for debate, its absolutely adorable. This is the key thats going to unlock a lot of doors for this robot, and Amazon knows it. Nobody is begging to have a roaming surveillance system in their home, but slap a pair of googly eyes on it, give it a cute name and the public will pay you for the privilege.

Getting people to emotionally bond with their gadgets isnt a particularly novel or difficult concept. The Tamagotchi, Furby, and Aibo banked on the idea they might have thought they were just making toys, but Sony inadvertently created a community of grieving robotic dog owners that cared enough about their artificial pets to buy bespoke accessories.

These gadgets dont even need to be all that adorable; I know many people whove either named or put googly eyes on their Roombas for this to be an isolated incident. In some ways, these machines have become de-facto pets in their own right.

Never underestimate our ability as humans to form emotional attachments to machines, nor the lengths that a company will go to exploit this. This is a cycle weve seen repeated for nearly every robotic gadget stretching back to the Nintendo R.O.B. in 1985 were taken in by a new adorable looking robot, that initial dopamine hit wears off, and were stricken by how useless it is in hindsight.

There is a certain quality we find endearing when robots drop the ball, but it admittedly becomes a little less endearing when we expect that same robot to care for stuff we actually care about. Besides being a novelty that loiters around your home, Amazon expects us to burden the Astro with tasks like elder care and home security. These arent tasks that we relinquish easily, and doing so involves a level of trust we typically don't place in machines.

Engineering a machine to perform a single task is relatively simple, but developing something with autonomy that's expected to handle a variety of tasks is remarkably difficult. Getting people to emotionally bond with a piece of hardware to the point that theyd trust it to watch their aging parent is another matter entirely.

The fact that Amazons Astro is powered by its Alexa voice assistant doesnt necessarily help. You probably have a story about how a voice assistant turned on at random and did the exact opposite of what you wanted. Getting anything with voice recognition to work reliably is spotty at best now imagine putting that same idea on wheels and expecting it to respond quickly and reliably in an emergency situation. If a burglar breaks into my home, Im not asking Alexa to dial emergency services, Im picking up the phone and doing it myself. This lack of trust and utility is really the make or break for these gadgets, as my Anki Vector will tell you.

While I knew I could implicitly trust my Anki to endlessly meander around my desk, the lack of utility in my Anki Vector was the final nail in the coffin for my pint-sized pal. I was enamored with its outward appearance, but after several months of watching it idly push and stack cubes around my desk, I could no longer delude myself into thinking that it would be able to do much more. It couldnt bring me a beer, open doors, or really do anything that my Echo couldnt do better. It may have looked cute but didnt perform tasks that were even remotely useful.

All too often when a piece of technology no longer serves a purpose, it eventually ends up discarded or forgotten, no matter how adorable it is. But I still couldnt bring myself to toss the Anki away like so much garbage; I gave it to the Able Gamers Foundation, which welcomes donations of toys, robotics, and gaming accessories. Passing along the joy I experienced helped soften the blow of what felt too much like abandonment.

While I certainly approach the realm of consumer robotics with a little more pessimism than I used to, I still yearn for The Future, and it wouldnt take much to get me to invite another robot into my home. If the Astro were about half the price and could actually do half the things Amazon says it can without constant supervision, I might be inclined to find space for it in my life.

Attack of the $200M robotic raises – TechCrunch

Hows this for a bit of regional synchronicity? This week, a pair of Chinese robotics firms secured $200 million rounds. Its all part of a booming ecosystem that we get some insight into every so often. There are so many players in Chinas robotics space it can be hard to keep track of some of the innovation over there, but these sorts of large funding rounds are a surefire way to make some waves.

The COVID-19 pandemic is anticipated to be a major acceleration point for the country, on the tail of some major manufacturing shortages that brought the worlds supply chains to a standstill. But this weeks pair of big raises point toward an adoption of automation that moves beyond manufacturing.

Hai Robotics grabbed the bigger headlines of the two with the announcement of a joint Series C and D that amount to $200 million. The companys Shenzhen location puts it smack in the heart of Chinas manufacturing zone, but the companys specialty is warehouse/fulfillment robotics. It already has a decent-sized international footprint with deployment in 30 countries, including a recent deal with Booktopia, a large Australian online book retailer.

5Y Capital and Capital Today led the C and D, respectively. The rounds also featured Sequoia Capital China, Source Code Capital, VMS, Walden International and Scheme Capital. The funding will be used to further Hais international expansion and build out its existing presence in China.

Keenon Robotics $200 million Series D flew under the radar a bit. The round was led by SoftBank Vision Fund 2, with participation from CICC ALPHA and Prosperity7 Ventures. The company specializes in service robots not dissimilar from the sorts of robo-waiters weve seen from California-based Bear Robots. Its a sizable industry on its own, though the company has already begun expanding its use cases, including hotels and hospitals.

Newly flush with cash, Locus Robotics (which seems to make its way into this roundup more often than not), has agreed to acquire Waypoint Robotics. Waypoint more or less operates in the same warehouse category as Locus. Its flagship product is Vector, an autonomous omnidirectional robot capable of moving around up to a 300-pound payload.

Locus announced a $150 million Series E in February and an additional $50 million this month. The company is clearly looking to build a robust fulfillment ecosystem it hopes can probably compete with Amazons offering.

The first fruits of Boston Dynamics acquisition by Hyundai are finally arriving. The drably-named Factory Safety Service Robot is effectively a bespoke Spot robot designed to patrol factories, starting with a pilot at the Hyundai-owned Kia Plant in Seoul. The robot comes equipped with lidar and a thermal camera and can patrol the factory floor autonomously or be controlled remotely through a browser.

This week, Nvidia and Open Robotics announced a partnership that looks to be beneficial for both parties. Essentially, the agreement is designed to make Nvidias Jetson development platform and Open Robotics ROS 2 software work together. The deal is designed to speed up development time for roboticists using Nvidias perception technology.

As more ROS developers leverage hardware platforms that contain additional compute capabilities designed to offload the host CPU, ROS is evolving to make it easier to efficiently take advantage of these advanced hardware resources, Open Robotics CEO Brian Gerkey said in a release. Working with an accelerated computing leader like NVIDIA and its vast experience in AI and robotics innovation will bring significant benefits to the entire ROS community.

And hey, happy Disrupt week! Shout-out to RoboDeck, the deck maintenance robot. The company is competing in this weeks Startup Battlefield with a product they assure us is more than just Roomba, but for resealing your deck (to quote Gregs piece). The system applies sealant and uses built-in mapping technology to determine the edges of the surface to avoid falling off.

One of the year's biggest reportson entrepreneurship is out--and emerging technologies such as robotics and blockchain were the big winners.

According to the 2021 Global Startup Ecosystem Report (GSER) from Startup Genome and the Global Entrepreneurship Network(GEN), the four fastest-growing industries globally areblockchain;advanced manufacturing and robotics;A.I. and big data;and agtech and new food.

The report measured growth by tracking early-stage funding deals from 2014 to 2020, in addition toother methods.Agtech and new food, which covers any type of technology that increases the efficiency of agriculture-related practices, had a128 percent increase in early-stagedeals over that period, the highest of the group.Blockchain was a close second with an increase of 121 percent.

The report detailedresearch on280geographic areas(termed "entrepreneurial innovation ecosystems")and three million startups from 2020 and 2021.

In 2020, "it became glaringly obvious that founders would be critical to global resilience and recovery," wrote JF Gauthier, founder and CEO of San Francisco-based Startup Genome, a research,advocacy, and consultingfirm for entrepreneurship, in a letter accompanying the study. He also celebrated the exodus of founders and companies from Silicon Valley to other hotspots in the U.S., spurred by remote work.

Still, Silicon Valley topped severallists in the report. The regionranked No.1for "performance success factor," which comprises a number of metricsrelated to funding, exits, and valuations of startups in the ecosystem. Italso topped allecosystemsin "Funding Success," which measures the number and experience levels of investors in a given location,and the availability of early-stage funding.

North America led global funding, accounting for50 percent of the top 30 ecosystems. Silicon Valley, New York City, Boston, and Los Angeles togethermade up 70 percent of North America's "ecosystem value,"a measureofstartup valuations and the value of exits in 2018, 2019, andthe first half of 2020.

Despite thedominance of those big cities, smaller areas shared some of the spotlight: Dallas and Houston each had their first unicorn in 2020, and the report identified top "Regional Challengers" such as Miami and Detroit.

The all-girl Afghan robotics team is forging a new future in Qatar – Euronews

In the robotics laboratory at Texas A&M Universitys outpost in Qatar, members of the all-girl Afghan robotics team pore over their laptops and electronics, refining the projects they hope to enter into the global robotics competition.

The nine team members were evacuated from Kabul last month following the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan.

In Qatar, they have been placed in one of three institutions depending on their needs with full scholarships granted by Doha.

Roya Mahboob, founder of an Afghan software company, helped form the team which went on to develop a low-cost ventilator last year at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

While the young women are now back in education and planning their futures, Mahboob says their thoughts are still with loved ones and other team members left behind in Afghanistan.

Right now, our programme is on pause, she said.

We only brought nine of our girls here - from 50 students. Thousands are still in Afghanistan, our mentor, our coaches are still in Afghanistan. Besides the robotic programme, we have thousands of other students that are in different programmes.

We cannot give up on them.

Team member Ayda Haydarpour, 17, who switched onto digital engineering after playing Super Mario as a child, said it was "too hard" to follow events in Afghanistan but hopes to return to open the first STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) school.

"My grandfather used to ask me lots of questions about his tablet and phone," she said.

"In Afghanistan, robotics is new, especially for women," Haydarpour, who has three sisters back in Afghanistan, added.

Her mother had worked as a teacher at a girls' high school, but the facility is yet to reopen following theTaliban takeover.

The Taliban had banned women from work and education, confining them to homes during their brutal rule of Afghanistan between 1996 and 2001.

In the wake of the chaotic US withdrawal from the country, Haydarpour now worries about the future and education of girls in her country.

"What will happen in Afghanistan?" she asks. "It's too hard to see your country in that situation."
