Robots in the wild: U of T’s Florian Shkurti on overcoming ‘edge cases’ in machine learning – News@UofT

Posted: at 9:08 pm

The technology behind self-driving cars has been racing ahead and as long as they are cruising along familiar streets, seeing familiar sights, they do very well.

But the University of TorontosFlorian Shkurtisays that when driverless vehicles encounter somethingunexpected, all that progress can come screeching to a halt.

He offers the exampleof a self-driving car that is following a large truck on a winter road.

Theres a wind gust and now the snow is coming at you, so you cant see anything, saysShkurti, anassistant professor in the department of mathematical and computational sciences at U of TMississauga who runs the Robot Vision and Learning(RVL) lab.And suppose your LIDAR (light detection and ranging system)misperceives the snow as an array of objects, so it thinks there are a million small objects coming at the car.

Shkurtis research extends far beyondself-driving cars to autonomous systems in general. How do they learn? How we can make them learn better? How they can successfully navigate complex environments at the service of humans? That includes making sure that robots can handle so-called edge cases, like the snowy truck example cases where the robot comes across a rare scenario, for which theres little or no training data.

Then you have to either collect more data, or you have to accept that there will be these rare events that your perception system wont recognize, Shkurti says.

Simulation is an important training tool. Self-driving cars, for example, can be trained on simulated roads and highways before theyre let loose on actual city streets. But scalability remains a challenge. If an autonomous system has to be specially trained for every possible scenario it might encounter, progress will be haltingly slow; there will be no way to take whats been learned from one scenario and scale it up so that the system can handle more general cases.

In an ideal world, Shkurti says, a robot could learn similar to the way a human would.

Take, for example, robots that help scientists collect data underwater an effort Shkurti has been involved with for several years.A human diver has to collect data manually, one data point at a time, one location at a time, Shkurti says. Itspainstaking work; its not scalable.

An autonomous robot, on the other hand, could take over the data collection process if itscapable of maneuvering underwater and equipped with a camera and other sensors. If the robot could understand what its doing if it has a model of what the scientist thinks is important to pay attention toin a particular environment then the robot could collect data on behalf of the scientist.

Such an approach has many benefits, according to Shkurti: Its much cheaper to deploy additional robots than to train more scientists;and it frees up the scientist to look after higher-level tasks. The scientist can give the robot some hints as to where to collect the data but then the robot can take care of the rest, hesays.

Shkurti, whodid his undergraduate studies at U of T before earning his PhD in computer science at McGill in computer science, was hired by U of T in 2018.He recently received aConnaught New Researcher Awardfor a project titled Robotics and Machine Learning in the Wild: New Directions in Automated Environmental Monitoring.

Hey says that while everything about computer science fascinates him, the field of robotics holds special appeal.

Robotics lets you play in different playgrounds, like control, perception, and machine learning, he says. It allows you to examine these different fields, and I really valued that and I still value it.

As for the lofty philosophical questions that sometimes crop up when people talk about advanced computer systems such aswhether machines could learn tothink Shkurti prefers to stay focused on the science. Machines can reason, he says, andthey can try to act optimally as they strive to achieve their goals.

If thats thinking, then theyre doing it, he says. But I dont spend very much time worrying about consciousness. I have enough other things to worry about.

The robotic handy helpers are expected to be delivered to Monarch's facilities by the end of the year.

DULUTH, Minn. UMDs robotics program is helping nursing homes in the area get the quality care they need while also helping facilities experiencing staffing shortages.

Monarch healthcare bought these robots to help staff in several of their local nursing homes.

They can help patients with daily physical and cognitive skills.

For those patients who may not be receiving regular visitors due to the pandemic, the robots can also provide emotional support.

That social interaction has gone down. People are feeling depressed and lonely. The robots can offer that social interaction. They will come and tell jokes, they will interact, they will have small conversations, they will administer reminiscence therapy. These little guys will teach them how to do easy-going exercises, UMD Computer Science Professor, Arshia Khan says.

The robots will go to eight monarch health facilities throughout the state including six facilities here in the northland.

Monarch says its main goal is for the robots to enhance the care of each of their residents.

Right now it takes our nurses a few hours to do an admission to do an admission when they come into the building, Monarch Healthcare Chief Operations Manager, Marc Halpert says.

Your love one comes to our facility. Its going to take them three to four hours. Its rigorous for the staff its rigorous for the resident.

They just came from the hospital they just came from home. Nobody wants to sit there through a three-hour assessment. These robots can do that in 15 to 20 minutes. So a lot of opportunities to really trim down that process and to make it a more pleasant life for the residents.

The robotic handy helpers are expected to be delivered to Monarchs facilities by the end of the year and will get to work in early 2022.

Need a 26-foot-tall robotic warehouse worker? Geek+ can handle that – FreightWaves

Posted: at 9:08 pm

Warehouse operators looking to maximize space often go taller with their racking. As more operations look to automate warehouse operations, that height can provide an obstacle to effective storage and retrieval of items, especially in an e-commerce environment where retrieval of single items dominates the picking process.

Welcome the 26-foot-tall warehouse worker.

Global autonomous mobile robot (AMR) company Geek+ has introduced a 26.24-foot robot the RoboShuttle RS8-DA with a flexible arm and tote-picking capabilities to retrieve those hard-to-reach items.

With e-commerce and warehouse rental spikes, businesses need flexibility and space utilization that traditional automation does not provide. Our engineering teams are continuously developing innovative solutions to meet this demand and allow our clients to remain competitive while providing a safe working environment to their employees, Liu Kai, co-founder and vice president of smart warehouse products for Geek+, said in a statement.

RoboShuttle is compatible with a variety of racks, totes, cartons and various box sizes. The company said the robotic solution can improve space utilization as much as five times. The robot features a slim yet robust chassis design with a flexible doorframe and double deep telescopic fork arms. It can retrieve items as low as 11 inches and as high as 25.6 feet.

Equipped with an intelligent depth camera and high-precision sensors, the robot can adjust its arms to pick boxes of varying sizes, optimizing overall shelf space, Geek+ said. When connected to a warehouse management system, RoboShuttle can transfer up to eight totes to and from a workstation.

As a long-term automation partner with strong R&D capabilities, we see it as our responsibility to facilitate various transitions that a business might be facing using flexible robotics, Kai said. Our AMR solutions are uniquely tailored to meet industry-specific challenges that logistics operators are facing today.

Founded in 2015, Geek+ provides autonomous robots but also technologies designed to automate logistics operations. AMRs are the evolved versions of the automated guided vehicles (AGVs) that have been in the industry for a few decades. AGVs typically are used for repetitive tasks in a warehouse, like relaying materials and fetching products. AGVs are not intelligent and thus completely dependent on humans to determine their routes.

AMRs, though, use artificial intelligence to intuitively understand a warehouse floor, updating their databases in real time on the constant changes within inventories. AMRs can collaborate and work in tandem with other intelligent warehousing systems, helping warehouses run operations without hiccups even during the peak demand season.

The Geek+ product line includes goods-to-person picking robots, bin-to-person RoboShuttles and sorting, moving and lifting robots.

In June 2020, Geek+ announced the closing of a $200 million Series C investment round led by GGV Capital, D1 Capital Partners along with Warburg Pincus. Total funding in the company is $439.4 million across six rounds, according to Crunchbase. In July, it announced it had sold more than 20,000 robots globally.

Advanced robots might be building your future home in BC | Urbanized – Daily Hive

Posted: at 9:08 pm

Advanced robots might be the architects of your future home right here in BC.

On Thursday, a joint announcement from the BC government and advanced robotics company Intelligent City, gave us a glimpse into the future of homes, with the opening of a new factory on River Road in North Delta, BC.

The hope is that this venture will go a long way to helping housing affordability, liveability, and climate change issues.

The BC government provided $460,000 in funding to Intelligent City from the CleanBC Building Innovation Fund.

While on paper it may look like these advanced robots will be 3D printing homes, it isnt that simple.

We manufacture building components using mass timber including cross-laminated timber (CLT) floor panels, exterior facade panels, among others, which are then delivered to a construction site where they are assemble, said David Wan, director for business development at Intelligent City, in a conversation with Daily Hive.

The buildings that we produce are carefully designed and engineered using our proprietary parametric software which gives us the ability to generate a virtual twin of the physical building with which we can determine every building component needed to create the finished product, even down to very minute detail, he added.

The technology uses mass timber, which is engineered wood, also known sometimes as composite wood.

We are now the first in the world to use advanced robotics to automatically assemble mass timber building systems that have been tested to meet the latest building code and net zero standards, said Oliver Lang, CEO of Intelligent City.

Richard Lam/Intelligent City

Using mass timber is key to creating a more resilient forest sector, its the construction material of the future and it allows us to rethink whats possible. We are happy to support these types of projects through our CleanBC building innovation fund, said Minister of Jobs Ravi Kahlon in a statement.

The technology will be used to create mid-to-high-rise urban housing, but can also be used to build commercial buildings.

Intelligent City is currently using the technology to build 2880 homes in Canada, and 1400 in the US, many which are being supported by BC wood.

The company has also released a concept photo of a project theyre working on for downtown Vancouver, slated to begin construction in 2022.

Vancouver concept (Richard Lam/Intelligent City)

According to Intelligent City, the structures will be fire-safe, structurally rigid, and sustainable. Mass timber can be used to build high-rises that are 18 storeys and higher.

The delivery of their first projects in Vancouver is expected to happen sometime in early 2022.

RedZone Robotics Launches AI/ML Platform, IntegrityPRO, and Announces Partnership with VODA.ai – KEVN Black Hills Fox

Posted: October 7, 2021 at 4:19 pm

Published: Oct. 7, 2021 at 8:00 AM MDT|Updated: 6 hours ago

U.S.-based robotics firm has partnered with VODA.ai to launch IntegrityPRO, a predictive analytics solution to aid system owners and operators in their wastewater infrastructure management processes.

WARRENDALE, Pa., Oct. 7, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -RedZone Robotics, a pioneering, U.S.-based, Robotics as a Service (RaaS) firm, announced a partnership agreement with VODA.ai, a provider of pipeline prioritization information through the use of proprietary machine learning software. RedZone Robotics' new IntegrityPRO powered by VODA.ai is a revolutionary risk-reduction, predictive analytics solution using both spatial relational tools and pipe condition assessment data.

Municipal utilities are faced with the responsibility of managing many infrastructure assets, including wastewater collection systems. Proper management, operation, and maintenance of these assets provides communities with adequate capacity and reduces controllable overflows. To properly assess a collection system's condition, utility managers need to know where to look first and how to gauge an asset's condition without physical inspection.

A utility's condition assessment program should include a prioritization of assets, along with a planned course of inspection to determine their condition. Historically, sewer infrastructure managers have relied on reactive measures, customer complaints, or asset age alone to combat failures. IntegrityPRO leverages RedZone's data warehouse of over 100 million feet of inspections, coupled with VODA.ai's daVinci MLengine. IntegrityPRO software can now provide system owners with complete asset prioritization and predictive assessment insights, allowing them to proactively manage their sewer infrastructure.

"Managing wastewater infrastructure is tricky business. Asset managers have their work cut out for them when it comes to knowing where to look first," says Dave Petrosky, CEO of RedZone Robotics. "Some sewer systems have thousands of miles of pipe. With VODA.ai, we can now help utilities, who have limited infrastructure budgets, accurately pinpoint exactly where to inspect first. We can also determine, with a high degree of accuracy, the condition of segments of the system that are difficult to access and inspect."

In the U.S. alone, there are over 800,000 miles of public sewers, with demand on treatment plants growing by 23% in the next few years, according to the American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE). Wastewater infrastructure in poor condition increases the number of sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs), a release of untreated or partially treated sewage from a municipal sanitary sewer. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that at least 23,000 to 75,000 SSO events occur in the United States each year.

"Unlike traditional prioritization methods, we've created an artificial intelligence approach that is the most effective in the industry and costs only a fraction of the savings realized" says George Demosthenous, CEO of VODA.ai. "Not only can this technology help utilities deal with SSO issues, but it can also save millions in unnecessary rehabilitation projects, reduce infrastructure failure, and reduce the thousands of hours it typically takes to prioritize a collection system."

Together, VODA.ai and RedZone Robotics will provide asset owners and operators with comprehensive assessment and prioritization of their wastewater infrastructure. Using RedZone Robotics' suite of state-of-the-art condition assessment technologies and IntegrityPRO, powered by VODA.ai, asset managers can more efficiently safeguard their infrastructure and optimize limited budgets. VODA.ai's technology will seamlessly integrate with RedZone's IntegrityPRO Software as a Service (SaaS) platform.

AEye and Seoul Robotics Deliver groundbreaking adaptive long-range perception solution for Intelligent Traffic Systems – Automotive World

Posted: at 4:19 pm

Delivers actionable information up to 300 meters and beyond extending critical safety envelope for any smart infrastructure application

AEye, Inc. (NASDAQ: LIDR), the global leader in adaptive, high-performance LiDAR solutions, and Seoul Robotics, a 3D computer vision company using AI and deep learning to power the future of autonomy, today announced the integration of AEyes 4Sight M LiDAR sensor and Intelligent Detection and Ranging (iDAR) software platform with Seoul Robotics SENSR3D perception software. AEyes adaptive iDAR platform uniquely enables Seoul Robotics SENSR perception software to deliver a complete solution for long-range object detection, classification, and perception for Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) by providing best-in-class 3D perception for vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians at distances beyond 300 meters. To see a demonstration first-hand, visit Intetra Booth #B5431 during ITS World Congress, October 11-15, in Hamburg, Germany.

AEyes intelligent LiDAR is software-definable, enabling system integrators to address the unique sensing need of any ITS application simultaneously, from intersection management to AV infrastructure, Automatic Incident Detection (AID) on highways, and automated tolling. Coupled with 4Sight Ms long-range capability, the integrated AEye Seoul Robotics solution will be able to achieve object detection and classification in adverse weather conditions and at ranges not currently available on the market.

Were extremely impressed with the adaptability of AEyes 4Sight M sensor; it allows us to optimize output for different ITS use cases, said William Muller, VP of Business Development at Seoul Robotics. Similar to how our SENSR software uses artificial intelligence to self-learn, AEyes innovative architecture enables Seoul Robotics to process advanced feedback loops and optimized scan patterns. This allows us to not only track motorists across all operational domains including roundabouts, 4-way intersections, and toll booths, but also to now monitor high-speed traffic on divided highways, which has been historically challenging in the world of ITS.

Built on AEyes award-winning iDAR platform, 4Sight M is an intelligent, adaptive, high-performance, and solid-state LiDAR that tailors its output to application-specific requirements. Its also the first and only LiDAR solution whose performance has been independently verified by a reputable third-party testing organization. Active safety and automated vehicle technologies researcher VSI Labs has confirmed and published the 4Sight Ms breakthrough range, resolution, and speed capabilities.

Seoul Robotics has trained SENSRs AI engine on the 4Sight M, whose data quality is maintained in daylight and at nighttime, even in adverse weather conditions. As a result, ITS integrators can benefit from reliable classification of motorists around-the-clock, even if some of the objects or obstacles are partially obstructed, fast-moving, or clustered together. Deep learning models enable SENSR to track more than 500 objects simultaneously with 10 cm accuracy, and weather-filtering algorithms allow tracking functionality in heavy rain and snow.

ITS integrators typically dont source individual sensors and software, instead relying on complete solution providers for smart mobility, traffic management, and automated tolling applications, and thats exactly what were delivering, said Akram Benmbarek, VP of Business Development and Strategic Initiatives at AEye. With the integration of the 4Sight M and SENSR, infrastructure developers and city operators using this solution will be able to evaluate data at high-risk intersections including lane usage by vehicle type, vehicle counts per lane, accident rates, and near-misses in adverse weather conditions and at distances beyond 300 meters. In addition, traffic management facilities will be able to distinguish weaving motorcyclists during peak congestion and detect road debris or fallen cargo to alert utility vehicles as needed.

Driven by the desire to advance transportation safety, mobility, and environmental sustainability, analysts expect strong growth in the ITS market. Research firm Markets and Markets predicts it will grow from $17.9 billion in 2020 to $36.5 billion by 2025, with another study projecting the total available market for LiDAR in smart infrastructure to increase nine-fold from $1.5 billion in 2025 to $14 billion in 2030.

The $1M SBIR Phase II award will enable GrayMatter to accelerate their next generation technology development.

"We want to improve shop workers' lives, enhance their productivity, and enable them to focus on higher-value tasks. Manufacturing drives our economy, and without automating surface finishing and treatment, there is a significant risk the global economy may suffer due to an increasing labor shortage," said Ariyan Kabir, co-founder and CEO of GrayMatter Robotics.

"We are excited to support the technology that can help improve the quality of human lives," said Dr. Elizabeth Mirowski, SBIR/STTR Program Director at NSF. "The technology GrayMatter is developing will enable manufacturers to sustain their business in the U.S., while offering employees better job opportunities not involving tedious and ergonomically challenging tasks."

Once a small business is awarded a Phase ISBIR/STTR grant(up to $256,000), itbecomes eligible to apply for aPhase II (up to $1,000,000). Small businesses with Phase II funding are eligible to receive up to $500,000 in additional matching funds with qualifying third-party investment or sales.

GrayMatter Robotics was previously awarded a $256,000 NSF SBIR Phase I grant to de-risk translation of the fundamental technologies required to develop smart robotic cells for surface finishing and treatment applications. The SBIR Phase II award will allow the company to expand the capabilities of their robotic cells to meet the requirements of a wider customer base.
