Beyond 3-D Printing and Robotics, the Most Lasting Thing Kendall Work Built? Communities. – USC Viterbi | School of Engineering – USC Viterbi School…

Kendall Work is no stranger to hard work. The USC Viterbi School of Engineering senior and soon-to-be Microsoft hardware program manager has spent the past four years laying down the bricks that paved his way to success.
Throughout his undergraduate career, Work pursued opportunities in and out of the classroom to build his skillset, expand his professional network and maximize his impact.
From enrolling as part of the Viterbi Scholars Institute (VSI) the summer before his freshman year to serving as a student leader on the board of USCs chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) to spearheading educational initiatives at the USC Viterbi K-12 STEM Center, Work has been an exemplary case of how investment in self and community unlocks potential.
Ive had really strong involvements throughout college that have really helped me grow, said Work. Im extremely appreciative of the community and support Ive had at Viterbi since day one.
Works first definition of community was formed the summer before his freshman year at VSI, a high-achievement program that transitions first-year engineering students from underrepresented backgrounds into USC Viterbi through exposure to research, faculty and staff mentorship and academic counseling.

It was at VSI where he met some of his closest friends, one of whom encouraged him to apply for 3D4E, a 3D printing student organization at USC Viterbi.
Completing my first 3D design project was so crucial because I learned so much about design manufacturing and the efficiency of teamwork when it comes to solving complex problems, Work said.
He enjoyed the experience so much that he took on a 3D design minor. As he progressed through his challenging and stimulating degree, he felt grateful for the support that hed found in his design team, a dedicated group of young engineers who shared his passions.
Around this time, Work met Katie Mills, co-director of the USC Viterbi K-12 STEM Center. Mills was looking to hire a student who was passionate about STEM education and had experience with robotics.
Work had spent much of his extracurricular time in high school participating in FIRST Robotics, both as a student and later as a coach for younger student competitions in his local community. Naturally, he was a perfect fit.
Throughout his time at the center, Work has mentored dozens of students in the joy of STEM projects ranging from programming genius robots to designing gravity-defying roller coasters.
Most notably, Work played an integral part in launching the centers Building Opportunities with Teachers in Schools (BOTS) program that teaches elementary school teachers how to introduce computer science to students.
The educators we work with are so passionate and the kids so brilliant, but we often saw that they didnt have the guidance or access to integrate computer science education into their curriculum, Work said. With the resources that we have at the center, all that was left to do was bridge that gap.
Work has also taught MATLAB programming to students in the Summer High School Immersion in Next-Generation Engineering (SHINE) program. Mills praises Work for his indispensable contributions.
Kendalls generous heart and wisdom make him uniquely brilliant, the co-director said. We at the center, along with many students, are grateful he continues to share his creativity and innate leadership qualities with us.

Work knew that to invest in himself meant to invest in his community the same community that he praises for helping him reach his potential. In his junior year, Work had a unique opportunity to serve as the pre-collegiate initiative (PCI) chair on the executive board of USCs National Society of Black Engineers.
NSBE is what really introduced me to inclusion in the engineering space, so it was important to me that I remained involved in college.
As PCI chair, Work helped grow the USC NSBE Jr. program exponentially, from fewer than 10 students renting meeting space in a church basement to almost 40 students attending monthly meetings on the USC campus.
Middle school students worked with their teachers and USC Viterbi NSBE students to complete engineering-based projects.
Work highlights these efforts when reflecting on the impact hes made.
As engineers, we have to rely on everybodys experiences, no matter where they come from, in order to solve problems, especially as they become more difficult to solve, Work said.
Its why Im so invested in diverse STEM education, he added. We need to do our part to make sure that younger students see people that look like us in engineering. The more students that we can inspire and support, the brighter our societys future looks.
After graduating from USC in May 2022, Work will start as a full-time hardware product manager at Microsoft.
I love mechanical engineering, but Ive always known I wanted to be in a more interdisciplinary role, Work said. The leadership and interpersonal skills I picked up during my time learning and serving at USC Viterbi have really prepared me for my next chapter at Microsoft. Im so happy about the experiences Ive had here.

The future might be filled with squishy robots printed to order – Popular Science
Posted: at 6:29 am
Mixing gelatin and sugar syrup could make for a tasty 1900s dessert. But its also the base of a gel-like substance that, in the future, could lead to cheap, bendy, and sustainable robots.
Scientists at Johannes Kepler University Linz in Austria have built a tentacle-like robotic finger with gelatin and other materials you can probably find in a shop near you. They cooked the ingredients and then created the finger in a 3D printer. They published their work on February 2 in Science Robotics.
You might be used to thinking of robots as rigid constructs of metal, ceramic, and other hard materials. These are the sorts of machines that build cars and make exoskeletons. But there are other types of robots, ones made from more compliant materials that can bend to their surroundings.
This is the growing world of soft robotics. In the near future, its soft robots that might find their way into the human body, where their flexibility could, for instance, allow surgical tools to conform to different body shapes. Its soft robots that might mimic sea creatures and delve under the sea, both on Earth and on other worlds.
But even if these squishy robots can go to extremes and swim like fish, the materials that make them work are often polymers like plastics, which arent renewable nor ecologically friendly. Gelatin, on the other hand, naturally biodegrades, leaving no trace. As such, robot-makers such as those in Linz have been tinkering with gelatin-based materials for a few years now.
But gelatin poses other challenges that you might not expect to pop up in a robotics lab. Because its essentially sugar and protein, it tends to attract mold. And when the gels water content dries upsomething that, predictably, happens in very dry environmentsthe gel becomes hard to work with.
It was too brittle, says Florian Hartmann, a physicist at EFPL in Switzerland and one of the researchers behind the new paper. So, if you stretch it just a little bit, it breaks very easily.
The Linz groups recipe gets around a few of those challenges. In addition to gelatin and sugar, they added citric acid, which alters the pH of the material and prevents microorganisms from feasting on it prematurely. They also mixed in glycerol, which helps the gel hold in water. With those upgrades, the material can be stretched up to six times its original length and still retain its structure. The Linz group had first published this recipe by 2020.
We carried on and tried to make more complicated robots with more performance and more functionality, says Hartmann.
That brings them to today. Unlike most gelatin builders before, who typically made their parts with molds like you might do in the kitchen, the Linz researchers modified a 3D printer to use their gelatin substance.
3D printing soft robots has so far been a technology with a lot of promise, but few results. Part of the problem is that the few polymers that have been used take a long time to settle and solidify, meaning that printing them takes an unpractical amount of time. But gelatin has an advantage: As a protein, it can crystalize and make viable prints much more quickly than polymers.
Manufacturing something completely biodegradable coming right out of the 3D printerI believe its a very interesting approach, says Ramses Martinez, an engineer at Purdue University, who was not involved with this paper.
To make the finger move, the Linz group wrapped it with an exoskeleton made from a material that included ethanol and shellac, the resin thats used in very old records. These strips are sensitive to how light refracts, or bends, as it passes between the finger and the air around it.
That made it possible to control the 3D printed gelatin finger by pressing compressed air at it. The moving air changed the angle of light passing through it, which makes the strips sway in response. The Linz group controlled the finger with a system containing a Raspberry Pi and a PlayStation 4 controller. In their experiments, they were able to make it push objects away from its surroundings.
[Related: These robotic wings use artificial muscle to flap like an insect]
Hartmann isnt sure how well this finger might fare outside the lab. The gelatin can go up to around 140 degrees Fahrenheit before it starts to melt, and it will require more tinkering before it can come in contact with water. But the good news is that, because its made of widely available ingredients, its easy to make more materials for further tests.
I believe everything related with proteins is something that you can explore putting this technology in, says Martinez. That might include robotic parts used to manufacture food to avoid the safety risks from non-organic parts. Hartmann also imagines it being used in robotic toys, to minimize harm to children, or in pop-up art installations, to make them easily disposable.
Martinez adds that gelatin robots could be used to enter sensitive environments, such as highly radioactive areas, where operators have to balance the need to reduce harm to themselves with the need to prevent further contamination. You just simply dont want to bring them back and recover them, he says. So, for these effects, having something that will degrade and actually biodegrade, that would be quite interesting.
Gelatin robots probably wont ever lift enough weight to build cars. But as this single finger shows, robots can do far more things than just that.

The US is testing robot patrol dogs on its borders – The Verge
Posted: at 6:29 am
The latest addition to the United States border force could be robot dogs. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released new details this week of trials of quadrupedal robots on the southern border. The machines are being tested in a variety of surveillance-focused roles, and although the DHS has shared no timeline for full-term deployment, it says trials were successful and that work with the machines will continue.
The southern border can be an inhospitable place for man and beast, and that is exactly why a machine may excel there, said Brenda Long, a program manager for the DHS research and development arm, the Science & Technology directorate (S&T), in a blog post. This S&T-led initiative focuses on Automated Ground Surveillance Vehicles, or what we call AGSVs. Essentially, the AGSV program is all about robot dogs.
The quadrupedal machines are built by Ghost Robotics, rival to the better-known Boston Dynamics (makers of the Spot robot). Ghost Robotics most popular model, the Ghost Vision 60, stands 2.5 feet high (76cm), weighs 70lbs (32kg), and can travel over 7.5 miles in 3 hours on a single battery charge.
The machine can navigate autonomously or be controlled manually, and can be equipped with a number of payloads, including thermal and night vision cameras. In the past, Ghost Robotics has even shown off prototype models equipped with guns, though there is no suggestion the DHS is testing such payloads.
In a detailed blog post, the DHS outlined how its tested the robot dogs for potential work on the border. The machines have been trialed for outdoor sentry duty, autonomously patrolling pre-set GPS waypoints while carrying cameras and sensors; for inspections of train cars at railyards, walking around and under carriages; and exploring residential buildings, including a scenario that simulated being met by potentially hostile individuals.
These are all tasks that robot dogs have been tested on before. The main appeal of these quadrupedal machines is that unlike tracked or wheeled machines they can navigate any environment humans can, including steps, stairs, steep hills, and rocky terrain.
But despite their sophistication, these machines have clear limitations, too. Real-life trials have highlighted a number of potential problems, including limited battery life and erratic behavior. When the French army tested Boston Dynamics Spot robot in military exercises, soldiers complained that the machine ran out of juice too quickly, while reports from US police trials of Spot complained about dodgy controls and patchy performance, with the machines sometimes falling over for no apparent reason.
Politicians and civil rights groups have also criticized the use of such machines as dehumanizing, especially when robots are used to interact with members of the public. Notably, the US border forces involved in these recent trials, like the Customs and Border Protection (CBP), are themselves notorious for dehumanizing behavior towards immigrants. An investigation in 2021 by Humans Right Watch detailed 160 internal reports of physical and sexual abuse of asylum applicants at the border in recent years, for example.
In its blog post, the DHS compare the deployment of robot dogs on the border to airborne drones as force multipliers that can supplement the work of human agents. As attempts to build physical walls across the United States borders stall, the government has increasingly turned to technological solutions, and robot dogs look like an obvious addition to this package. As the DHS concludes: dont be surprised if in the future we see robot Fido out in the field, walking side-by-side with CBP personnel.
