Robots Are Coming for Millions of Blue-Collar Jobs – Common Dreams
Posted: March 18, 2021 at 12:17 am
Some people find hunting for sport to be abhorrent, so hunters have come up with euphemisms to make what they do sound gentler on the ears of the nonhunting public. For example, animals aren't killed; they're "harvested." And dead prey is not gutted but "processed."
Corporate America has taken note of this verbal ploy and is now adopting it, for CEOs urgently need euphemisms to soften the image of their constant hunt for ways to kill jobs and funnel more money to themselves and top investors. Their urgency is that they're now pushing a huge new surge in job cutsthis time targeting college-educated, white-collar professionals! Their weapon is the same sort of neutron bomb they've used to dispatch millions of blue-collar workers: robots.
But that term has a very bad reputation, so robots have been relabeled with a nondescript acronym: RPA, "robotic process automation." These are not your grandfather's old bots merely doing repetitive mechanical tasks. Sophisticated automatons armed with artificial intelligence have quietly moved up the corporate ladder to take over cognitive work that had been the niche of such highly paid humans as financial analysts, lawyers, engineers, managers and doctors.
McKinsey, the world's biggest corporate strategy consultancy, calculated in 2019 that the emerging revolution of thinking robotics would displace 37 million U.S. workers by 2030. Now, seeing the current corporate stampede to impose RPAs on U.S. workplaces, McKinsey analysts have upped their projection to 45 million job losses by 2030.
This is more than just an incremental extension of a long, slow automation process. It's a transformative Big Bang, presently ripping through America's workforce at warp speed with no public or political attention, and most of the vulnerable employees have no idea of what's coming.
Corporate executives, boards and investors do know, however, for they've been rushing furtively in the past year or so to implement RPA initiatives. The New York Times reports that a survey of executives last year found that nearly 80% of them have already put some forms of RPA in place, with an additional 16% planning to do so within three years. Yes, that's 96% of corporate employers. Sales of the new-age automation software are booming, turning little-known providers like UiPath and Automation Anywhere into multibillion-dollar behemoths intent on radically shrinking the job market here and elsewhere.

Returning to the hunting analogy, professional jobs requiring human-level judgement have been presumed to be beyond the range of robotic firepower. But, as one economist who studies labor now notes, with the mass deployment of RPA technology, "that type of work is much more in the kill path."
The corporate vocabulary does not include the phrase "job cuts." Rather, such unpleasantness is blandly referred to as "employment adjustment." Moreover, terminations are hailed as universally beneficialthey're said to "streamline" operations and "liberate" the workforce from tedious tasks.
Now, though, corporate wordsmiths are going to need a new thesaurus of euphemisms to try glossing over the masses of job cuts coming for those in the higher echelons of the corporate structure. Don't look now, but an unanticipated result of the ongoing pandemic is that it has given cover for CEOs to speed up the adoption of highly advanced RPAs to replace employees once assumed to be immune from displacement. As one analyst told a New York Times reporter, "With R.P.A., you can build a bot that costs $10,000 a year and take out two to four humans."
Prior to the COVID-19 crisis, many top executives feared a public backlash if they pushed automation too far too fast. But, ironically, the economic collapse caused by the pandemic has so discombobulated the workplace and diverted public attention that corporate bosses have been emboldened to rush ahead, declaring, "I don't really care. I'm just going to do what's right for my business." While the nationwide shutdown of offices and furloughing of employees has caused misery for millions, one purveyor of RPA systems approvingly notes that it has "'massively raised awareness' among executives about the variety of work that no longer requires human involvement," The New York Times says. He cheerfully declares, "We think any business process can be automated," and his firm advises corporate bosses that half to two-thirds of all the tasks being done at their companies can be done by machines.
Conventional corporate wisdom blithely preaches that all new technologies create more jobs than they kill, but even those Pollyannaish preachers are now conceding that this robotic automation of white-collar jobs is being imposed so suddenly, widely and stealthily that losses will crush any gains. "We haven't hit the exponential point of this stuff yet," warns an alarmed analyst. "And when we do, it's going to be dramatic."

Elementary Robotics Unveils Industry’s First Cloud-Based AI Camera System; Appoints New EVP of Sales and Marketing and EVP of Engineering to Take…
Posted: February 25, 2021 at 1:50 am
LOS ANGELES, Feb. 24, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- Elementary Robotics, a rapidly growing AI vision startup, today announced a new AI camera system for cloud-based inspection. The new system, which combines easy-to-use software, deep learning AI, and camera systems make it faster and easier for manufacturers to deliver top-quality products to their customers. The company is also announcing the appointment of Monique Apter to EVP of Sales and Marketing and Milind Karnik to EVP of Engineering. Founded in 2017, Elementary has built a hardware and software platform for applying machine learning and computer vision for intelligent automation of quality and traceability workflows in manufacturing and logistics.
Manufacturers have long used computer vision to inspect products for defects or other problems, but this traditionally involved programming rules for identifying flaws, making it time-consuming to deploy and change the equipment. Using AI, inspection systems can be fed examples of particular flaws or be trained on what a product is supposed to look like and asked to identify abnormalities. AI based vision yields 90% more detections in manufacturing and can be deployed in less than 30 minutes. Elementary's AI camera system for cloud-based inspection provides AI models that allow non-technical operators to teach systems to find defects. The solution also delivers cloud analytics, allowing manufacturers to deploy, upgrade and keep an eye on their production lines remotely, from anywhere in the world, to ensure the delivery of top-quality goods to their customers.
To date, several manufacturers in consumer packaged goods (CPG), logistics and automotive have deployed the system, including many large industry leaders such as Toyota, as well as local establishments such as Chicago-based Home Run Inn Pizza. Home Run Inn Pizza uses Elementary's technology to ensure consistent quality in their frozen pizzas which are delivered to 30 states across the country.
"We are excited for the opportunity to leverage Elementary's innovative technology to ensure the highest quality all natural pizza is making it into our customers' hands," said Nick Perrino, COO at Home Run Inn/Pizza. "The ease of use of this technology, coupled with its rich data analytics, gives us the power to take quality to the next level."
"Elementary is solving a massive problem that customers need to solve around visual inspection in the trillion-dollar manufacturing industry," said Mohammed Islam, partner at Threshold Ventures. "The rapid adoption of new applications enabled by computer vision is growing exponentially. Elementary's new Cloud-Based AI Camera System for inspection is an industry first that will finally bring the level of automation and precision to manufacturing inspection that has been needed for years."
Elementary Robotics Rounds Out Executive Bench and Experiences Significant Growth Amid the Pandemic
Elementary Robotics recapped a remarkably successful 2020 despite the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic. The company recently moved into a larger office space in Pasadena, California and has significantly grown its customer base and revenues and plans to double employee headcount in 2021 to meet strong customer demand. Elementary has also rounded out its executive team with the recent appointments of two senior executives with decades of sales, marketing, and engineering expertise who will help steer the company as it continues on its rapid growth trajectory.
Monique Apter, EVP of Sales and Marketing: Monique brings more than 30 years of sales and marketing leadership experience to Elementary. Monique served as VP of Sales and Marketing for Kindred Systems, Inc. which was acquired by Ocado. She also held executive sales positions with Rethink Robotics, and Segway.
"While manufacturers have successfully deployed robotics and other automation technologies to reduce the cost of goods to consumers and accelerate manufacturing times to meet consumer demand, the inspection process has largely remained a manual process," said Monique Apter. "Our new AI camera system for cloud-based inspection, will enable manufacturers to keep an eye on their production lines remotely and deliver top quality goods to their customers."
Milind Karnik,EVP of Engineering: Prior to joining Elementary, Milind was Senior Vice President of Engineering at Cylance which was acquired by Blackberry at the end of 2018 for $1.4 billion. He has also held senior engineering positions at QLogic, LSI Corporation, Dell and Intel.
"I am thrilled to welcome two new leaders to our executive team," said Arye Barnehama, founder and CEO of Elementary Robotics. Both Milind and Monique have proven track records and bring the leadership philosophy that will be invaluable as we continue to grow the organization and provide our customers with the advanced level of automation and precision to manufacturing inspection they deserve."

ABB’s robots to meet post pandemic demand for workforce that never gets sick – KDAL News
Posted: at 1:50 am
By John Revill
ZURICH (Reuters) - ABB unveiled two additions to its robot family on Wednesday which the Swiss engineering company expects will tap into increased demand for automated production after the COVID-19 crisis.
More companies in pharmaceuticals, logistics, electronics and food and beverage manufacturing want to use robots, ABB said, with investment set to increase as companies emerge from lockdowns.
ABB, which saw a 90% surge in robot sales in China at the end of 2020, hopes the GoFa and SWIFTI collaborative robots - or cobots - can win orders from customers who have been forced to shut down during lockdowns or have struggled with ill workers.
"Customers want to be independent of these fluctuations in future," said Sami Atiya, head of ABB's Robotics & Discrete Automation business.
"The question of resilience has become fundamental," he told Reuters. "The pandemic has accelerated the mind-shift."
The big advantage of robots - they don't catch coronavirus - has led to ABB supplying Singapore with robots from its existing product line to carry out 50,000 coronavirus tests per day.
Atiya said: "You cannot do this with humans, and with robots you are not exposing them to health hazards."
ABB expects robot demand to pick up after the pandemic, citing its survey which showed 84% of 1,650 businesses intending to introduce or increase their use of robots in the next decade.
Atiya said companies were looking to spend more to raise productivity levels after pausing investments last year.
The demand for collaborative robots is estimated to grow 17% per year, nearly double the rate for conventional robots, according to analysis by ABB and Interact Analysis, a market researcher.
ABB, which competes with Japan's Fanuc Corp and Germany's Kuka, also wants to reduce its reliance on the automotive industry, where it generates around 40% of its sales in robotics.
It hopes the new machines will be attractive to faster growing sectors like food and beverage, and balance the ups and downs of carmaker demand which caused its overall robot sales to drop 12% in 2020.
The new GoFa and SWIFTI cobots, which cost $25,000 to $35,000 each, are packed with sensors to prevent accidents and so do away with the need for protective cages. Both robots are faster than previous models, with the Swifti able to move its arm at up to 5 meters per second while carrying a load of 5 kg.
They could be used by smaller companies like bakeries which have never had a robot before, Atiya said, although they will never totally replace humans.
"I see our customers actually increasing their hiring," he said. "The companies get more productive and have more work to do, so people will do more rewarding and creative work while the robots do the dirty and dull jobs."

FarmWise plans to add autonomous crop dusting to its suite of robotic services – TechCrunch
Posted: at 1:50 am
The robotics revolution in farming is set to continue as the autonomous crop cultivation company FarmWise looks to add new capabilities to its autonomous farming equipment.
The San Francisco-based company is currently testing the application of fungicides and insecticides to row crops as an additional capability for its weed-killing robots, according to company chief executive Sbastien Boyer.
Its the latest advancement in robotics for the farm a market thats becoming increasingly crowded with the launch of new companies like Future Acres, which launched its support robot Carry today, and Mineral, the spinout from Alphabet (Googles parent company) that provides crop analysis.
Rather than sell robots directly to farmers, FarmWise sells its robotics services to farms, and charges farms roughly $200 per acre inspected and weeded. We show up on farmers fields with our own operators and our own equipment, Boyer said.
Its a business model that has attracted $24 million in outside funding from firms including Playground Global, and the company is likely going to raise another round, targeted at $20 million, later this year, according to Boyer.
Boyer says the company already counts half of the largest growers in Salinas, California among the companys customers. These are farms for big consumer vegetable companies like Dole.
What FarmWise hopes to do is fill gaps of missing labor, according to Boyer. Along with co-founder Thomas Palomares, Boyer said he identified a need for farms to keep up with their output while dealing with a shrinking workforce. Its about helping farmers keep up with work while the pool of people willing to do these jobs is shrinking, he said.
Using the robots isnt just good for farms bottom lines, Boyer said. It also helps reduce the amount of fertilizer and chemicals used on the farm, which is good for the environment and creates a more sustainable food chain, he said.
I was attracted by working on a large-scale sustainability problem, Boyer said.
