Private islands of the rich and famous – AOL UK

Once you've reached a certain level of fame and fortune, then it's hard to get away from it all. Even with a beach house in Malibu, or a flash villa in a desirable resort, you're still going to have to spend your holiday with members of the public - and risk having your sunbathing interrupted by fans and selfie-seekers.

If you want to let your stomach muscles relax, strip down to your 'dad bod', or hang out with new friends without starting all sorts of colourful rumours - then it's time to invest in a private island.

And some famous faces have done just that - in some cases spending millions of dollars on an island getaway.

Johnny Depp invested in a Caribbean island - it apparently stretches over 45 acres and has six private beaches. He named one of the beaches after his daughter Lily-Rose.

Country power-couple Faith Hill and Tim McGraw have an island in the Caribbean of their own - this is spread over 17 acres, and is called Goat Cay. They built a main property for themselves - and separate cottages for visiting friends.

Steven Spielberg, meanwhile, went for an island in the Madeira archipelago. It's technically two islands merged into one - and the director apparently likes to have them both uninhabited.

Some stars, meanwhile, have decided to turn their private islands into money-spinners. Leonardo DiCaprio went for a Belizean island. He spent $1.75 on the unpopulated island back in 2005, and apparently plans to build an eco-resort there.

Perhaps the most famous Brit with an island of his own is Richard Branson who bought Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands almost 40 years ago. His famous guests have included Prince Harry, Tony Blair, and Kate Winslet (who was famously there when fire broke out in 2011). The multi-millionaire is still known to visit, but when he's elsewhere, the island is available for rental for up to 34 guests - at 1,866 per person, per night.

Inside Faith Hill and Tim McGraw’s $145 Million Empire: Private Islands, Record-Breaking Tours and More – E! Online

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill have been together for over 20 years, and while that kind of love is a reward in itself, it's also proven to have some other benefits, too.

Both Tim and Faithsaw quite a bit of success in the early '90s, and they ended up gettingtogether at the peak of their careers in 1996. Faith joined the country crooner on hisSpontaneous Combustion Tour, and they ended up falling hard and fast for one another. They married in October of that year and welcomed their first child, Gracie, into the world in May of 1997.

Many stories like this would continue by saying "the rest was history," but the rest was only about to get better for these two.

The next 20 years of marriage proved to not only be filled with love, family (including two more daughters, Audrey and Maggie), friendship and tons of memories, it also proved to be quite lucrative, too.

Tim and Faith have built a massively successful empire together...and by massive we mean $145 million worth.Just check out some of the numbers below...

Becky Fluke

$145 Million: Together, it's estimated that the couple is worth a whopping $145 million, which putsthem in the list of top earning celebrity couples.

$80 Million:Faith's estimated net worth adds up to around $80 million thanks to her music career as well as her occasional acting roles on television shows and movies. She's also seen some payoffs from her fragrance line as well as her involvement with the NFL's Sunday Night Football.

$70 Million: Tim's estimated net worth comes in around $70 million, which can be chalked up to his music career as well as a couple acting appearances here and there.

Ethan Miller/Getty Images

20 Million: Faith has sold over 20 million album units since debuting her first albumin 1993. She's released seven studio albums, four compilation albums and 42 singles.

40 Million: Tim has sold over 40 million album units since his debut album in 1994. Since then, he's released14 studio albums, 11 compilation albums and 67 singlesall of which havegrossed around $530 million.

$139 Million:After getting together, Tim and Faith decided they didn't want to spend more than a few days apart. Thus, they started touring together in 2000 with their first Soul2Soul tour. They followed that tour with the Soul2Soul II tour on which they embarked in 2006. The first grossed $50 million and the second grossed $89 million, becoming the highest grossing country music tour of all time (a record they held for several years). Together, the two tours grossed around $139 million. The couple has recently taken off for their third tour together, the Soul2Soul World Tour, which will only continue to add to their empire.

$18.3 Million: The couple just put their Franklin, Tenn., mansion on the market for $18.3 million. The 3,152square-foot home was built in 1800 and features three bedrooms with four baths as well as a master suite. The home also boasts sixfire placesand is part of a 622-acre property they own (though they sold off 131 acres of it in 2015). Faith and Tim bought the property in two separate transactions 17 years ago (in 2000) paying $13.75 million total for both.

20 Acres: The couple have recently transition theirpermanent residence to the 20-acre Bahamas islandthat they call "L'le d'Anges." They bought the land in 2003, and it took over a decade todevelopas they realized it was like building a small town. We can only imagine the cost that went into that!

Clint Spaulding/Patrick McMullan

$85,000: This is the base price listed for Faith's cara Range Rover, which she shared a photo of her hubby washing on Instagram not too long ago.

$149,000: Tim keeps a couple cars in his garage (that we know of), which add up to around $149,000. First and foremost, he's always talked about his red Jeep Wrangler, which he shared a photo of last year, noting "that's how I'll always be." He also owns a Land Rover Defender 90, which can cost around $70,000 as well as his late father's vintage Mercedes 200 series 280SL, which he could sell upwards of from $64,000.

Priceless: Although the couple is certainly not lacking when it comes to finances (they live on a damn island!), there's one thing money simply can't buy...20 years of marriage and unbreakable love.

"Tim has given me confidence and strength and my foundation," Faith said in an interview in 2000. "He makes me feel like I can conquer the world."

Tim, on the other hand, said, "I'm lucky to have her. She's the light of our whole family's life. She keeps everything going for us. We all strive to be like my wife, everybody in our family. If your wife holds the example for everybody in your family, that's a good thing."

House Style: Five Centuries of Fashion at Chatsworth edited by Hamish Bowles, foreword by the Duke of Devonshire, text by Kimberly Chrisman-Campbell and Charlotte Mosley, introduction by the Countess of Burlington Chatsworth is one of the most famous historic houses in England, and House Style features it magnificently alongside contemporary and historic fashion in an exquisite setting. The Cavendish family and the hereditary dukes of Devonshire have called the Derbyshire site home since Elizabethan times. Dubai to Build $1.7B Man-Made Islands – Hospitality Net – Hospitality Net

Posted: June 6, 2017 at 6:32 am

Press Release 6 June 2017

In the last 20 years, Dubai has seemingly grown from the desert in the United Arab Emirates, rising up to become arguably the most luxurious and high end travel destination on the face of the planet. Now, the hotel and leisure industry in the city is helping it to grow outward, into the sea nearby.

The global investment holding company Dubai Holding has recently announced its plans for Marsa Al Arab, a four million square feet pair of man made islands that will be located on either side of the Burj Al Arab Jumeirah, which is the city's iconic hotel that is shaped like a sail.

Estimates place the cost for this project at $1.72 billion, and when it is complete it is slated to add as much as 1.4 miles of beach to the coastline that runs along the city. The ground breaking is currently scheduled for June, but given the extensive nature of this project, Dubai Holding officials have said that none of the islands will be complete until late 2020.

This construction, like much of Dubai, will be geared toward tourists and other leisure seeking visitors. One of the islands will include family friendly resorts, a 2.5 million square foot marine park and a custom built 1,700 seat theater, which will be home to the first Cirque de Soleil show in the Middle East region. This island will also house 300 sea facing apartments.

The second private island comprising the Marsa Al Arab project will host 14 luxury villas and marina areas for residents, along with a chic boutique hotel. Once all of this work has been completed, Marsa Al Arab will add a total of 2,400 hotel rooms to the Jumeirah Group's portfolio. This group is part of Dubai Holding, and the majority owner for Dubai Holding is Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, who is the Ruler of Dubai.

This is not the first time that the Jumeriah Group has been involved with the construction of man made islands. That group is also the manager of the Burj Al Arab, which is itself located about 280 meters from Jumeriah Beach, atop a tract of artificial land that was first built back in 1994.

In recent years there have been other attempts to build islands along with the Burj, and the levels of success of these projects has tended to vary.

Another appealing hotel proejct in Dubai will be the Oyster Resort Dubai, a 5-star new-build resort with a key count of 1,748. The resort consists of a two spiralling towers that anchor a set of radiating fins that sit in the lagoon in front and house a series of villas looking onto the lagoon, each with a private garden and beach.

More information on hotel construction in Dubai can be found on TOPHOTELPROJECTS, the specialized service provider in the exchange of cutting-edge information of hotel construction in the international hospitality industry.

The coolest rooms in the South Pacific for 2017 – TTG

Posted: June 5, 2017 at 7:46 am

From luxurious overwater bungalows to a resort on its very own island, Charlotte Cullinan rounds up the coolest rooms in the Pacific Islands for 2017.

Sharelines

The latest developments in the South Pacific offer your clients even more choice when it comes to a luxurious place to lay their heads. From the Conrad Bora Bora Nui with its newly refurbished villas to traditional bungalows at the Cook Islands Little Polynesian Resort, theres a range of new and recently renovated options for clients looking to make the journey to these beautiful islands. We highlight some of the top properties to have on your radar this year. The Conrad Bora Bora Nui, Tahiti While Bora Bora is famed for its overwater villas, for the ultimate bragging rights suggest the archipelagos only two-storey overwater accommodation, complete with a sauna, bar area and whirlpool.

The presidential villas can be found at the Conrad Bora Bora Nui, which opened in April in a private cove on Motu Toopua, just a short boat ride away from Bora Boras coast. Following a huge refurbishment, the former Hilton property features 114 light and airy villas and bungalows, with the presidential villas offering two bedrooms and three bathrooms.

The Conrad comes recommended by Gold Medals Asia and Australia senior product manager, Rebecca Turner, who explains: The presidential villas have hosted some of Hollywoods most famous faces and the hotel boasts three restaurants, three bars, an infinity pool, mini-golf and a private island known as Motu Tapu, which is only accessible by boat.

Book it: Gold Medal has seven nights B&B at the Conrad Bora Bora Nui, two nights room only at the Intercontinental Tahiti Resort & Spa, flights and transfers from 4,459pp, departing on November 1 or 30, 2017.

Since opening in Waigani the commercial heart of Port Moresby in June 2016, the Stanley Hotel and Suites has tended to attract business clientele. However, it is now targeting leisure travellers with the introduction of a spa, and by highlighting its attachment to the Vision City Mega Mall, which is home to a nightclub, cinema and restaurants.

There are 429 rooms, but book the presidential suite for views of the Stanley Mountain ranges and National Stadium. The 20th floor suite sleeps four and offers 340sqm of space, packed with a large dining room, a full kitchen and marble bathroom with a monsoon shower and oversized Jacuzzi bath.

Book it: In August rooms cost from 182 per night.

After its rooms were refurbished in October, Rarotongas Little Polynesian Resort received a further boost in January when it joined Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH).

SLH vice president of sales EMEA, Carsten Lima, rates the resorts location on the shores of Titikaveka Beach as one of the most beautiful beaches in Rarotonga.

He adds: Its perfect for clients who like watersports such as stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking and canoeing, which are offered to guests free of charge. The hotel is ideal for clients who want a tranquil or romantic getaway as it ensures absolute privacy and has a no-child policy.

He recommends booking one of the 10 traditional bungalows, known as ares. Guests can overlook the lagoon from their king-sized bed under towering vaulted ceilings before stepping into a private walled courtyard to enjoy an outdoor shower.

Book it: Prices start at 605 per are per night, on a B&B basis.

Travel 2s Oceania assistant product manager, Rachel McMurdo, has a top tip for those seeking the latest in Fijian luxury: The hottest property in Fiji at the moment is the Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay, a new five-star hotel on the mainland with a beach lagoon in the centre of the resort. It features overwater villas and suites which are the first of their kind in Viti Levu the largest island in Fiji.

The property opened in April and offers 136 deluxe rooms and 114 bure villas, all with a private balcony or terrace overlooking the pool, ocean or lagoon.

Book it: Travel 2 offers three nights B&B at the Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay in a deluxe lagoon view room and six nights room-only in a beachfront bure at the Tokoriki Island Resort from 2,439pp. Includes flights and transfers, departing June 5 and June 24, 2017.

For small groups or families, suggest one of the 25 two or three-bedroom waterfront villas at the Taumeasina Island Resort. When it opened last July, it became Samoas only island resort, situated just outside Apia and linked to the mainland by a causeway. The villas are surrounded by tropical greenery, with private balconies overlooking the lagoon and Upolu mountains. There are also 80 oceanview rooms.

The Samoa Tourism Authoritys chief executive, Sonja Hunter, describes the resort as absolutely stunning, adding: The design has been sensitive to the environment and reflects the Samoan culture in details throughout the property.

In the centre of Apia, Aggie Greys Hotel reopened in August as the Sheraton Samoa Aggie Greys Hotel and Bungalows. The property has retained much of its colonial style but the 175 rooms, suites and bungalows have all been renovated.

Book it: Prices at the Taumeasina Island Resort start at 130 for an oceanview room on a B&B basis during the low season (October 1, 2017 to March 31,2018).

This Destination Wedding Venue on a Private Island Is Actually AffordablePromise! – Brides.com

Posted: June 3, 2017 at 12:46 pm

There's something to be said for having an island wedding with a "castaway" feeling, but it's not easy to achieve that and still give your guests the kind of luxurious accommodations that many of them crave when they travel to a tropical destination . Frequently, choosing a remote-feeling destination wedding location means having to ask your guests to make compromises. Unless you choose to get married on Palomino Island.

Palomino Island is one of only three privately-owned islands in Puerto Rico. It's just a little over 200 acres, and it has been owned by the same family for generations. The vast majority of the island has been rented to the Waldorf Astoria's El Conquistador Resort , a popular destination wedding venue on the east end of Puerto Rico, about an hour's drive from San Juan.

While El Conquistador's gardens and terraces on the cliff overlooking the water (and Palomino Island) are popular ceremony locations, for brides seeking a beach ceremony in an unforgettable locale, the resort has a very special treat for them on the shores of its private island.

There's a ferry that runs between the resort and the island every 30 minutes, free to guests of the hotel. It's only a 15-minute trip each way, and many couples choose to get married on the private island, and take their wedding pictures there, before returning to the resort for a fabulously posh reception. Choosing to get married before the regular ferries stop running at 5:30 pm keeps your budget in check, as all of your guests will travel to and from your ceremony for free. But not to worry, El Conquistador has kept the rates reasonable if you choose to charter your return trip so that you can capture sunset in your wedding photos.

For brides and grooms attracted to the Gilligan's Island -vibe of Palomino Island, it's possible to rent the entire private island for your wedding festivities. As in, you can get married on a beautiful Caribbean island that is entirely yours for the evening, and treat your guests to a fabulous tropical experience that is unlike anything they can experience anyplace else.

Just because Palomino evokes a castaway feeling doesn't mean your wedding ceremony or reception has to be any less elegant and sophisticated than you want. El Conquistador and its recommended vendors have designed numerous elaborate weddings, and other special events, on Palomino. You can have as many bells and whistles as your budget allows. For those who choose the private island for its Jimmy Buffet-esque appeal, you can stick with that theme and keep it casual while your guests party all night long. On a PRIVATE island that you and your fianc have rented for your entire wedding night.

Kamil Rivera Lopez, a catering sales manager at El Conquistador who plans weddings, explains that brides and grooms can literally have anything they want catered to their wedding reception on Palomino.

"We take everything over to the island on the ferries, and set it up exactly as the clients imagined it would look," Kamil says. The only caveat to her "anything you want and can afford" policy is elephants. The resort is popular for Indian weddings, and she's had that request more than once. There are no elephants available for rent in Puerto Rico. However, Palomino Island is equipped with beautiful horses that are frequently brought into service for wedding ceremonies and photo shoots.

There are many lovely destination wedding venues on tropical islands, but El Conquistador is the only one in the Caribbean that boasts a private island that can be used exclusively by wedding couples for their wedding festivities. And since El Conquistador itself is located on the island of Puerto Rico, brides and grooms who choose Palomino Island as their wedding destination are getting married on an island, located off of an island. It makes their destination doubly special.

Another added bonus is the fact that this resort is in Puerto Rico, which means your wedding guests won't need passports for the trip, and they can use U.S. currency for their expenses. Don't forget to check out the off-season rateswhile temperatures in the continental United States become unbearable in the summertime, El Conquistador has stunning views and spectacular breezes on its cliffs year round.

Meet Trudeau’s new language commissioner A Liberal insider who barely speaks English – The Rebel

Posted: at 12:46 pm

The official languages act is obsolete. Canadians learn French if they have to, and Quebeckers learn English if they have to. The mania over this issue from a generation ago is spent as numbers from Statistics Canada over the past decade confirm.

But the Liberals recently hired a new commissioner of official languages, who gets a massive budget and bureaucracy, and who, if past conduct is any guide, will harass people who dont speak French in places like Vancouver, Calgary and Barrie.

The only purpose for French-English bilingualism in many of these cities is so Liberals can get preferential hiring for government jobs. French-English bilingualism across Canada is a solution without a problem, so naturally, the Liberals love it.

The new Liberal Party bilingualism commissioner has trouble with English. How did that happen?

Well, shes a Liberal.

By her own admission, she met with Trudeaus partisan boss, Gerald Butts about the gig, yet Trudeaus cabinet minister Joly lied about that in Parliament.

Its a government job, not a Liberal Party job but Liberals think they own the government so see the job as a gift to give away to their friends.

Corruption in public office has been around for millennia, which is why we have checks and balances in place so you cant just hire friends or family.

An independent head-hunting firm was tasked with finding the best candidate for this job, and were working on it when they found out from the media that the job had already been filled by Gerald Butts and Trudeaus friend.

We know Justin Trudeaus policies including Official bilingualism, are wrong, but its the law for now and should at least be implemented ethically until its repealed. But, theyre hiring their friends instead of the best people.

Theyre vacationing with billionaires on private islands, and keeping it secret from the ethics commissioner and theyre putting their friends in high office, against the rules.

The Libranos are back!

Next, Howard Levitt, Senior Partner, Levitt, LLP, joins me to explain why he thinks former managing editor of CBCs, The National, should sue the CBC after he was dismissed from his job for being politically incorrect.

Then I speak with John Carpay of Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedom about their legal action against Manitoba Public Insurance over a rejected vanity plate with a Star Trek theme deemed offensive.

A Caribbean island or a prime west London flat? Remote 44-acre private hideaway with helipad listed for sale for the … – Homes and Property

Posted: at 12:46 pm

Property prices in London are such that even with 23 million to spare you can still end up with a flat, but how about your own private Caribbean island for the same amount?

Buck Island is a beautiful retreat from the world, fringed with dazzling white coral sandy beaches, but just a minute by boat from Tortola, the largest of the British Virgin Islands, and home to restaurants, museums and plenty of luxury shops.

The island is one of the largest private ones in the Caribbean, covering 44 acres, with cliffs soaring to 100 feet and a sea water pool with its floor covered in coral.

The temperate climate is perfect for all-year round living, with summers from 75F to 90C and winters of 70F to 84F.

The island has an amazing array of accommodation that will let you entertain all your closest friends, while maintaining your privacy.

The interior walls of the main house are clad in natural stone throughout and has a vast family room, a dining room that seats 14, a fully equipped bar area, kitchen, library and two en suite bedrooms, each with open-air showers and balconies.

The crowning glory of the house is a tower with a circular balcony offering 360-degree views of your kingdom and the surrounding seas, while underneath the house is a workout room and spa.

The so-called master villa is next door and includes a 180-degree balcony and even a conference room, while there are also two private villas that only share a kitchen and dining room, while two further guest cottages each have one bedroom and private balconies.

Above it all: the main house hasan infinity pool, with agazebo-covered kitchen, barbecue and dining area under a covered patio(Grenadine Islands Villas)

Should you want to keep some of your guests at arm's length across the water, the property even includes accommodation on Tortola island, 200 yards from Buck Island.

Bar Bay House is a three-bed, three-bath gated home, while the Annex Staff Quarter has four further bedrooms.

One of the main reason for buying a private island is having a beach all to yourself and with all the mod cons you could desire.

Kick back: one of the island's many outdoor living-diningareas(Grenadine Islands Villas)

Buck Island not only has its own beach house with a lounge, dining area, kitchen and four showers to wash away all that sand, but a boat house stacked to the rafters with kayaks, sailing boats and dinghies.

And if you don't fancy swimming or snorkelling in the limpid Caribbean waters, then, of course, there is an infinity pool, with a gazebo that's no ordinary poolside shelter, featuring a kitchen, barbecue and dining area under a covered patio.

Any private island worth its salt also offers ways for plutocrats to use their own transport to reach it and there is not only a helipad but a protected bay that allows superyachts up to 200 feet long to anchor.

Should you ever wish to leave your paradise home for the capital, London is just 13 and half hours away, by connecting flights from Tortola's airport.

Buck Island is for sale with Grenadine Island Villas for $30million
