Consumers are too lazy for The Truth about Amazon to really make a difference – iNews

Posted: November 26, 2020 at 10:47 pm

I never use Amazon. You shouldnt, you know Jeff Bezos is the richest person in the world, they have ravaged independent business, there have been all sorts of reports about the punitive employment practices in their manufacturing metropolises, their Alexa technology is listening to you without your permission and thats without even mentioning the environmental impact of the endless deliveries.

I wouldnt dream of using it, except for when I urgently need something absolutely essential that I couldnt possibly buy elsewhere, like a bottle of rhubarb gin, or a set of allen keys, or a smart oil diffuser I can have puff out some neroli just by barking at it. Which is to say, unfortunately, I am one of those whose use of Amazon skyrocketed this past year and increased the marketplaces monthly profits by 40% to 1.6bn.

i's TV newsletter: what you should watch next

The Truth about Amazon: How to Shop Smart fortuitously opened the week of Black Friday, after which I expect Mr Bezos will be in the market for a couple more private islands. Helen Skelton and Sabrina Grant, with the help of experts and a couple of acquiescent Amazonaddicted guinea pigs, offered an engaging manifesto more or less to the tune of: go in armed, without condemning (perhaps not condemning enough) those of us who continue to use it despite our better judgment.

They outlined Amazons wildly confusing user interface, which profits from overwhelming the consumer, how the buy box on the right-hand of the screen usually does not include the cheapest price, how Amazon forces high street sellers to undercut the prices on their own websites (and how we can use this to wangle further discounts), how environmentally friendly their refurbished tech shop really is (not very), whether we can trust Alexa to do our shopping for us (no) and how after supposedly deleting more than 20,000 fake five-star reviews from the site earlier this year many sellers now steal positive reviews of one product in order to increase the rating of another. I suspect this is why it took me 90 minutes to watch the 50-minute programme, using a wifi range extender which supposedly had 4000 five-star reviews.

Certainly, with every new revelation about the evil corporation the ignorance is bliss argument for continuing to shop there diminishes further, but if were going to, then Skelton advised with a bit of patience and flexibility, you can save a fortune. But given Amazons USP of convenience has the specific advantage of demanding the consumer bother with neither, I do wonder if it her words will fall on deaf ears.

The i on TV newsletter is a daily email full of suggestions of what to watch as well as the latest TV news, opinions and interviews. Sign up here to stay up to date with the best new TV.

Private islands, rather than ships, could make the difference in cruise rebound – TradeWinds

Posted: September 18, 2020 at 1:08 am

When cruise companies get back to the business of carrying passengers on vacations, what will give one company the advantage over the others?

Will it be having the right ships? Will it be on-board entertainment, the dining options or gimmicks such as robotic bartenders?

If some industry experts are correct, what will distinguish the winners in the cruise sector's recovery may be private islands.

UBS analyst Robin Farley has told investors that New York-listed Royal Caribbean Group has the upper hand on its three main rivals largely because of CocoCay, its island in the Bahamas.

The property is a key reason why Farley has placed a "buy" rating on New York-listed shares of the company, the second largest in the business.

"Other lines don't have the amenities and attractions of [Royal Caribbean's] CocoCay, and/or require tendering to get from ship to island rather than having a dock," she said.

Private islands could provide a boost across the cruise sector after the Bahamas recently said the lines could begin to visit them, even though they cannot bring passengers to Bahamas ports, such as Nassau.

Why do they matter for the cruise industry's prospects?

Farley has told clients she believes that after the Covid-19 hiatus, serving US cruise customers will depend heavily on cruise company-owned islands because they offer a more easily controlled environment.

Even before the pandemic, the islands were already very attractive to cruise consumers, said Stuart Gordon, a London-based senior analyst at Berenberg whose coverage includes leisure stocks.

"They've always been very good selling points for the cruise companies," he told TradeWinds.

He cited the financial boost that Royal Caribbean received after the 2019 opening of the revamped CocoCay as an example of the positive impact that private islands have brought the industry.

While Gordon agreed that the cruise giants' private islands provide some advantages when it comes to complying with Covid-19 travel rules, he said it is unclear how much social distancing measures will limit their capacity to take on cruise passengers.

"It's just a question of what is the throughput that you could have in the new world," he said, referring to the new normal as cruise companies slowly resume operations. "Broadly speaking, it is fair to say the private islands will help those big players, when the bookings restart, as a differentiator."

But while each member of the cruise major quartet has invested in a private island in the Bahamas, they are not all the same.

Farley said Ocean Cay, controlled by Mediterranean Shipping Co's MSC Cruises, also has strong amenities, but it has not marketed them so well.

"MSC hasn't conveyed its private island attractions as effectively," Farley said in a note to clients.

New York and London-listed Carnival Corp, the world's largest cruiseship company, has seven private destinations across its portfolio, including the Bahamas' Little San Salvador Island, which the company calls Half Moon Cay.

But Farley, a US-based managing director at UBS who covers the leisure sector, said none of these attractions stand up to Royal Caribbean's island paradise.

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, the third-largest cruise operator, has spruced up the beach and cabanas at its Bahamas outpost, Great Stirrup Cay.

But cruiseships are unable to dock there, requiring passengers to tender to the island, Farley noted.

Much of the advantage of Royal Caribbean's CocoCay is rooted in its $250m renewal project, which included building a pier that allows passengers to reach the attractions on land without the use of tender boats.

The Miami cruiseship owner also built a variety of attractions on the island, formerly known as Little Stirrup Cay. These include the Thrill Waterpark, which features North America's tallest water rides.

Just under 89 km (55 miles) from the Bahamanian capital of Nassau and visible from the beaches at Norwegian's Great Stirrup Cay, the island also features the Caribbean's largest wave and largest freshwater pools.

Royal Caribbean also gives island visitors the opportunity to take a helium balloon to a 137-metre view of the Bahamas archipelago.

Berenberg's Stuart said that it remains unclear how much the cruise majors have earned from their islands.

But he said that just like their ships, the operators' islands and private properties with the best and most modern amenities and offerings do more to reel in customers.

"I think it would be safe to say that by all accounts the work that Royal Caribbean has done in CocoCay is a step ahead of what we've seen elsewhere," Stuart said.

A private island off the coast of Ireland could be yours for 250,000 – The Spaces

Posted: at 1:08 am

Seeking seclusion but dont want to leave creature comforts too far behind? Mannion Island offers four acres of empty land just 200 metres off the mainland in southwest Ireland.

The isle is currently uninhabited apart from grazing sheep and seals that bask on its shore. Its located in County Corks Dunmanus Bay and includes its own sheltered cove, which offers year-round access.

Via Vladi Private-Islands

Theres also a natural spring and vast amounts of fertile land which had previously been used for agriculture. In the spring, the island is reportedly covered in bluebells.

According to the agents, Vladi Private Islands, a building permit isnt available for the Irish property. However, electricity could come via solar panels or a wind turbine, and you can always pitch a tent for accommodation. Once youve had enough camping off the grid, its just a short boat journey to the nearest pier in Durrus.

Private four-acre island listed for sale off the west coast of Ireland – Homes and Property

Posted: at 1:08 am

Anyone who has pitched a tent in the last month or two will know that very often the problem is rarely the camping itself.

Escaping to the wilderness of the Highlands or picturesque Cornish seaside is the perfect getaway until every staycationer and their dog finds themselves on the M1 at the same time.

But what if you had a year-round private bolt hole? If 2020 has awakened the camper in you, Mannion Island just off the west coast of Ireland could be the answer.

A four-acre plot, currently used to graze sheep, has been listed for sale in Dunmanus Bay a five-minute boat trip from the mainland of Ireland.

With a natural sheltered cove to the east that allows year-round access, Mannion island is 200 metres from the nearest point of the mainland or 500 metres from a recently built jetty near Durrus village in West Cork.

The island has belonged to members of the same West Cork family for 30 years, who have always used it in connection with agriculture.

Other possible uses could include camping, coastal and marine research, or for breeding animals, with the necessary permissions in place.

While there arent dwellings, structures or ruins on the plot, which may have aided planning applications, the island listing suggests electricity could be provided via solar panels or a wind turbine.

The current owners say other islands in the area have been transformed into private retreats in recent years, with one other in the same bay Carbery Island being snapped up by a couple from mainland Europe last year.

In the same region, on the south side of the Mizen Head peninsula, sits 123-acre Castle Island in Roaringwater Bay which is for sale for 922,350.

Horse Island, also in Roaringwater Bay, is thought to have been sold for around 5 million during the coronavirus lockdown after the interested parties unable to visit due to international travel restrictions were given a video tour.

In addition to a huge main house and six guesthouses, 157-acre Horse Island has a pier, helipad, boathouse, three beaches and tennis court. Its also self-sufficient, with wind turbines, generators, wells and private roads.

As can be common with unusual property buys, Mannion Island has been on the market for about 12 months.

The owners say there has been interest in that time but, with quarantine restrictions, would-be buyers havent yet been able to travel over to view in person.

Mannion Island is for sale priced 230,000 through Vladi Private Islands. For more information email info@vladi.de.

Downward trend: Family Islands on track to be virus free – EyeWitness News

Posted: at 1:08 am

NASSAU, BAHAMAS As he underscored the recent downward trend of coronavirus cases, particularly in New Providence, Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis expressed disappointment with the continued proliferation of social gatherings and pleaded for Bahamians to avoid them to allow the case trend to continue.

We would note that the numbers are coming down, the prime minister said in Parliament.

And I must congratulate those in the construction industry who [have] become more disciplined and compliant in terms of wearing the facial masks, and that may have possibly helped because now we are seeing a decrease I cant say at this particular time.

But I am still somewhat disappointed by the amount of illegal, social gathering and parties that are still occurring.

I ask the Bahamian people if they can at least remain compliant, just at least to the end of this particular month by wearing facial masks and try to resist from social gatherings, it would do a lot for their country in that it would exhilarate the process of us of the decline and decrease in COVID cases that we are seeing, and would help us in opening our country a lot sooner, and would help them in returning back to their jobs, create opportunities for jobs, and I think it would help the country.

So, we are only asking Mr Speaker for the Bahamian populous just make three weeks of sacrifice by utilizing the masks and yes, I know it is uncomfortable and discomforting for some but what is three weeks of discomfort for a lifetime of success both in the economic and for the future of this country.

So, I send out a plea to the Bahamian people to be compliant with us over the next three weeks so that we can continue, as we continue to open our country.

Minnis said he would not be surprised if an announcement was made very soon to declare the Family Islands COVID-free.

Thats a message we want to send out to the world, so that the world would come and visit our country and help to boost our [tourism] and our economy, he said.

But the Family Islands are doing very well. Harbour Island for example has no cases.

Im happy to say that Harbour Island is free for all intents and purposes and can engage in the activities, but still follow the mitigation protocols. I would be happy to stand very soon and declare that the entire Bahamas is in such a state, but we would need their compliance and their discipline for just three weeks.

Three weeks of sacrifice for our young people and our Bahamians and three weeks of enforcement by what we call the Bahamian security force because we are all in this together.

We cannot leave it just to the police. The police are stretched. They are stretched. They have an entire nation to manage.

He added: Just like I begged with respect to many other issues that we may have had before, I only ask for three weeks of compliance so that we can exhilarate the process and open our country as quickly as possible.

According to the latest emergency orders, social gatherings at a private residence or facility for up to 10 people are allowed on islands in the second schedule, with the exception of New Providence.

These islands include, Acklins, Abaco, Andros, the Berry Islands, Bimini, Cat Island, Crooked Island, Eleuthera, Exuma, Grand Bahama, Inagua, Mayaguana, and New Providence.

Social gatherings on other islands, which make up the first schedule, have been capped at no more than 20 people.

Although New Providence continues to see double-digit cases on a daily basis, the number of new infections last week before to previous weeks were down

There were 20 new cases in New Providence yesterday, 23 new infections on the island Monday and 43 new cases on Sunday.

New Providence continues to lead cases 2,056.

New cases in Grand Bahama have dropped from the low double-digits to single-digits over the last two weeks.

There have been 3,032 COVID-19 cases, of which 1,461 remain active.

Another 1,482 cases have recovered.

There were 375 new infections in The Bahamas in the last week, compared to the 440 new infections recorded the week before.

Several Family Islands such as the Berry Islands and Cat Island have not recorded new cases since August 21, while islands, including Ragged Island and San Salvador, have zero recorded cases.

Similarly, Crooked Island has only recorded three new cases in the last month.

A slap on the wrist – TT Newsday

Posted: at 1:07 am

EditorialArthur DashFriday 11 September 2020Police Commissioner Gary Griffith puts on his mask during a media briefing at the Police Administration Building in Port of Spain. - Angelo Marcelle

COMMISSIONER of Police Gary Griffith wants us to believe he is tough on crime.

Which is why his defence of the slap on the wrist given to partygoers at a pool party at Bayside Towers is so jarring.

And a slap on the wrist it was.

Mr Griffith would like us to consider prior instances when police allowed people to get off with breaches of public health rules, particularly people of a different demographic from those associated with gated condominium complexes.

But such an approach ignores the increasingly fraught circumstances we are in today.

Perhaps the commissioners focus on the crime rate going down has blinded him to the fact that covid19 deaths are going up. And going up dramatically.

Even the Police Service has had, in recent weeks, to contend with a dramatic escalation. At least 114 recruits at the Police Academy have tested positive; several floors of the Police Administration Building have had to be sanitised; and Mr Griffith himself on Wednesday lamented, It is virtually crippling us.

So whatever obtained previously, this is a different ball game.

What makes the polices initial failure to act in this instance, and the commissioners defence of that failure, worse is Mr Griffiths own previous position on the question of enforcing regulations on private property.

Yes, we can, Mr Griffith said in April, citing a public health ordinance.

It may well be the commissioner was engaging in gun talk at a moment when there was a dire need to scare people into acting properly.

Equally, the commissioner may have later discovered the legal complexities and intricacies and ambiguities with which he is now so well-versed.

However, in relation to Bayshore, it is unclear if officers on duty felt it necessary to consider what other laws might have been relevant.

For instance, what about the offence of public nuisance? It seems it matters not whether that offence takes place on private or public property.

According to the Summary Offences Act, any person occupying or having control over any house, yard or premises of whatever nature who permits such nuisance is liable.

Granted there are grey areas, the police, the State and health officials have had several weeks to work together and fix them. The second wave was no surprise. And before Bayshore, there were long whispers about parties on private islands and so on.

Instead, here we are today with all these complaints about how bad the law is and hence, from other quarters, that it is being applied in a discriminatory fashion.

In the past, especially given the progress mapped by official statistics relating to the crime fight, many have been disinclined to accuse Mr Griffith of being all bark and no bite.
