Superb Seychelles where to stay in the diving, hiking and beach paradise – The Independent

Posted: August 28, 2021 at 11:55 am

Across the island of Mahe, several strange gashes scar the coastline wounds from unsuccessful treasure hunts carried out by local residents over the years.Left by 17th century pirates who cruised through these waters, legends of lost loot are so engrained in the national psyche even the government demands a 50% cut of any finds by law. But to date, no major hauls have been declared.

Whether theres any truth to the far-fetched fairy-tales is debatable, yet the Seychelles evidently sparkles with riches from diving with sharks in the outer islands, to hiking the slopes of soaring, jungle-wrapped peaks. And as travellers plan ahead for dream holidays to escape a period of non-stop nightmares, its not surprising the 115-island state is topping booking lists.

Granitic, volcanic or small, low coral cays each island has a different appeal and character, some thriving with communities and others occupied by only one resort. Whether youre seeking adventure or simply to zone out, heres our pick of the best places to stay.

STORY Hotel, Mahe

All walks of life stroll along the beach at Beau Vallon on main island Mahe (where all international flights arrive and depart), making it one of the best places to sample local living in the Seychelles. Perfectly placed to soak up the action, this fun and modern property is only metres from the rolling waves. Choose a villa with plunge pool and beach access to sink directly into the sand or opt for a garden room overlooking a tropical lagoon.

Scoring top points for sustainability, the hotel has made environmental protection a priority: measures have been taken to protect flora and fauna on its premises; an onsite water bottling site has reduced plastic consumption; and a rainwater harvesting system has been put in place. A gym and serene spa are tucked into the gardens and theres a choice of seven restaurants ranging from buffet to private, petal-strewn fine dining. Off site, theres a chance to hike through Morne National Park several trail heads leading to the emerald peaks are a short walk from the hotel.

LArchipel, Praslin

Given human habitation in the Seychelles only dates back a few hundred years, its easy to trace the roots of early settlers. Owned by descendants of the French dOffay family, this elegant beachfront resort one of the few high-end, family-owned properties in the Seychelles is a successful marriage of present and past; classic Creole architecture has been polished with a Riviera sheen.

Set on a gently sloping hillside of landscaped gardens overlooking one of the islands most secluded beaches, 32 rooms and larger suites occupy several plantation-era buildings with sunset-facing verandas, and a shore-side restaurant serves an excellent menu, served with French finesse. A one-hour ferry ride or 15-minute flight from Mahe, Praslin is more laidback than her sister island. Come to visit the UNESCO-listed Vallee de Mai, home to a forest of coco de mer trees, prized for their weighty 20kg nuts.

Six Senses Zil Pasyon, Felicite

Everywhere in the Seychelles is magical, but some places sparkle with an extra-special quality. At Zil Pasyon, the only resort occupying the private island of Felicite, accessible by a 20-minute private boat transfer from Praslin or helicopter from Mahe, the emphasis is on uninterrupted relaxation. Thirty pool villas are tucked into the palms and tropical forest, where fruit bats swoop overhead at dusk; a generous lap pool, sun deck, and playful swing above the bath justify spending an above average time in your room.

To do so, however, would mean missing out on so much: take a dawn kayak ride to nearby Coco island, where several seabird species nest; trek a trail to the islands highest point; dine beneath a native takamaka tree festooned with fairy lights; or enjoy private sundowners on beanbags at a secluded granite viewpoint. Built into the rocks, the spa is extraordinary; book a private slot at the saltwater pool and sundeck gazing out to the Indian Ocean

Hilton Labriz, Silhouette

Boulder-strewn beaches attract visitors to this volcanic island, but the wild interior is just as captivating. Declared a national park, 93% of the land is protected, creating an adventure playground for anyone lucky enough to stay at this fantastic resort. Despite having 111 rooms and a choice of eight restaurants, it never feels busy, and there are plenty of opportunities for discovering secret patches of sand either by hiking or exploring on a boat.

Silhouettes history as a coconut plantation is detailed at the Grann Kaz, a Creole house once belonging to the Dauban family, where lively, traditional dinner dances are held. A trail regarded as the hardest in the country also follows a route once used by workers to cross the island. Underwater activities are taken care of by an excellent PADI dive centre, which offers open water courses, while the spa built sensitively between giant boulders is back-to-nature bliss.

Prince Andrew appointed trade envoy to Love Island – NewsBiscuit

Posted: at 11:55 am

Liz Truss insisted that Andrew could bring a wealth of experience about private islands, inappropriate love and pizza related alibis. One aide commented: They both seemed so excited, we didnt have the heart to tell them that Love Island is not a real country.

Prince Andrew is said to have been ready to leave in an instant, having had his bags packed for a hasty exit months ago. He did insist that his new role would be covered by diplomatic immunity, anonymity on Tinder and an untraceable Search History.

Meanwhile, the International Trade Secretary has made her mark by appointing a string of inappropriate envoys; including Oliver Cromwell to Ireland, Henry V to France and Kate Hoey to anywhere. Many have sarcastically commented that Truss was just pulling names out of a hat, while her aide explained: Its not that that strategic.

Andrew will be solely responsible for the import and export of love to the UK, with his primary focus on emerging markets nothing too old he demanded. Unlike other Royals who have been accused of not working hard, Andrew promised to be very hands on.

Hope And Optimism As Delta Threatens The Travel Industry’s Recovery – Forbes

Posted: at 11:55 am

In the final scene of The Perfect Storm, the fishing boat Andrea Gail's crew glimpse the sun breaking through the clouds just before being swallowed up by a rogue wave. For those in the travel industry, particularly the over 1,500 in Las Vegas earlier this month for Virtuoso Travel Week, optimism was tempered with trepidation as the covid-19 delta variant continues to spread.

In what is easily the industrys worst downturn since the Ice Age halted pre-historic mobility, the World Travel & Tourism Council reported an overall loss last year of $4.5 trillion in receipts with travels contribution to global GDP dropping 49.1%.

Australia is set to remain off-limits to American tourists until the middle of next year at the ... [+] earliest, says an official with Tourism Australia. (Photo by Scott Barbour/Getty Images)

For some, any new restrictions on international travel wont really change things. Australia has been closed to American visitors for over a year, although it is allowing movie production. Its not expected to reopen until the middle of 2022 at the earliest, says Chris Allison, head of commercial partnerships for the Americas at Tourism Australia.

For others, the spread of covid-delta is already having an impact. In his roundtable meetings with travel advisors and journalists, Israels tourism commissioner for North America, Eyal Carlin, had to switch gears. After the country reopened for small groups of tourists in May, an uptick of infections meant he was breaking the news borders were once again closing.

Most of the announcements, however, were about starting back up and new openings, as well as plenty of innovation, something the crisis-plagued travel industry has always been very good at.

Chris Austin, chief sales officer of new luxury cruise line Explora Journeys, says it garnered $1 million of pre-sales in the first week it opened its waitlist. The initial voyage isnt until 2023.

American Airlines is beginning its first nonstop flights from Miami to Anguilla in December, shares an excited Kenroy Herbert, chairman of the tourist board. He says the island has been covid-free for six months.

While other destinations were closed, Los Cabos gained an influx of first-time visitors. Now, with more competition again, it is developing a strategy to lure them back, says Rodrigo Esponda, managing director of the tourist board.

After a 66% drop in international visitors last year, Pro Colombia took the opportunity to reassess its approach to the market. It created five new tourism regions rich with trendy experiences from private islands to local culture and gastronomy. Its new target is luxury travelers.

Atlantis, The Royal, is set to debut in Dubai in early 2022.

Despite the pandemic, Kerzners One&Only increased its portfolio by 30%, opening resorts in Mexico, Malaysia, and Montenegro. Greece is coming next summer.

Its sister brand will open Atlantis, The Royal, in Dubai early next year. The 43-story cantilevered skyscraper will have 231 luxury apartments, 693 hotel rooms and 102 suites.

Kerzner chief commercial officer Brett Armitage says the delay from Q4 is due to supply chain issues. Another issue for hotel owners, he says, is the cost of construction materials has gone up compared to budgets.

Jane Mackie, senior vice president, global marketing luxury brands for IHG Hotels & Resorts, runs through seemingly dozens of openings across its InterContinental, Regent, Six Senses, Kimpton, Indigo and Voco brands. There will also be a new soft brand. Like Marriotts Luxury Collection, the new, yet-to-be-named flag will target owners who want to benefit from IHGs advertising, sales, reservations and procurement, but wish their hotels to have an individual identity.

What pandemic? Six Senses Ibiza was one of a multitude of IHG Hotels & Resorts' openings across its ... [+] various brands, including Regent, Kimpton, Indigo, Voco and InterContinental.

Mackie agrees with Armitage - openings are more challenging than ever. Issues range from having enough linens and dishes to getting furniture delivered on time. Covid-induced changes in the local community provide even bigger hurdles. For example, many hotels outsource their laundry. In some cases, businesses that were there before the pandemic are not there now.

The Kempinski Palace Engelbergin Switzerland recently opened after covid-related delays.

Aside from supply chain issues and labor shortages, the pandemic has driven hotel groups to look beyond traditional business models. While Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts just opened in New Orleans, will debut in Napa later this year, and has properties set to open in Minneapolis and Nashville next year, it is expanding its presence in the villa rental market.

Not just hotels. Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts has been building up its portfolio of managed ... [+] rental villas. Rates run up to $40,000 per night. (Photo by Vittorio Zunino Celotto/Getty Images)

Ben Trodd, senior vice president, sales and hotel marketing for the Toronto-based group, says it now offers 750 managed villas that rent from $2,000 to $40,000 per night. In some locations, villa rental revenues are 20% higher than before the pandemic.

For Accor, next month, it will reopen the Fairmont Century Plaza, having cut its inventory by a third to 400 rooms and suites. Like others, the pandemic is forcing innovation. And after working with the National Hockey League to create a covid-free environment for its playoff teams last year, Accor is launching a program called Bubbles & Buyouts. Your group will be able to take over all or part of select hotels with similar protection protocols.

Virgin Hotels is an excellent example of the constant flow of good news and bad news industry executives face daily. Its CEO James Bermingham says for its hotels, which includes a new property in Las Vegas opened in June, the good news is very strong leisure bookings and a resurgence in meetings. The bad news is, as delta virus spreads, the groups end up reducing in size. Attendees decide at the last minute they dont want to go. On the bright side, The events arent cancelling, he notes.

Shadi Omeish, general manager of 1 Hotel West Hollywood, was nonplussed about new masking requirements for indoor activities. His hotel had already created several outdoor spaces, so he quickly shifted dining to those venues.

The mandate isnt hurting business, so far. The impact has been very, very small.People want to travel. People want to be with other people, he says.

There has been a surge of extended families and groups of friends booking safaris, says Sherwin ... [+] Banda, president of African Travel. (Robyn Preston / Barcroft Media via Getty Images)

Other suppliers backed up that theme. Sherwin Banda, president of African Travel, says 2022 bookings are running 200% ahead of 2019, the tour companys best year. Destinations like Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Botswana have emerged as top sellers. Group travel is up significantly with extended families and groups of friends buying out departures, creating their own bubbles.

Still, hes hoping when everything is said and done; hell end up at 90% of 2019 levels. People are still nervous. People book and then cancel.

Mark S. Conroy, managing director, the Americas for Silversea, echoed the bullish outlook of the cruise executives in attendance. Its 2023 world cruise, where fares run from $67,000 to $250,000 per person, sold out in weeks when it was put on sale last Fall. He says past clients are booking back-to-back cruises. A lot of our guests felt like they lost a year-and-a-half of their lives. Theyre ready to go.

Cruise line executives say guests are booking back-to-back voyages and world cruises priced up to ... [+] $250,000 per person sell out in weeks. Pictured, the Silver Wind passes under Tower Bridge on the way out of London on a balmy August evening, as the sun sets behind the city on August 25, 2019 in London, United Kingdom. (Photo by Chris Gorman/Getty Images)

Ellen Bettridge, CEO of Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection, says she sees the same trend. One customer has five booked this year, and hes already done three. It is expanding to include combinations of river cruises and rail journeys.

Celebrity Cruises is seeing a similar percentage of first-time cruisers as prior to the pandemic, a very positive data point, says Dondra Ritzenhaler, senior vice president of sales. We have been so diligent with protocols, and they work, and people want to cruise. She says having 100% of the crew vaccinated resonates with consumers.

Better known for escorted motor coach tours to Europe, Insight Vacations will launch its first ... [+] Hawaii itineraries next year. (Photo by Smith Collection/Gado/Getty Images).

While travel industry suppliers generally eschew wading into politically charged issues, executives from Collette, Insight Vacations and Luxury Gold recently instituted vaccine mandates. For motor coach tours that cross multiple borders, its the only way they can ensure that their clients will be compliant with entry requirements that change daily.

Behind the scenes, there is more work and increased costs, says Guy Young, president of Insight and Luxury Gold. In addition to a driver and tour director, theres now a well-being officer on each departure. That person handles all of the covid-related paperwork and bureaucracy.

In some places, the company has had to find alternate locations or restaurants due to closures or staffing issues. Closed borders mean fewer foreign workers, a staple of the tourism industry in many places. In January, it will start something new, its first-ever itineraries to Hawaii.

Asked if the navigating through the pandemic felt a bit like The Perfect Storm movie, one industry executive told me, Well, it does seem that way some days. Hopefully, were not on the boat with George Clooney.

Deserted Michigan island with sandy beaches hits market: All 31 acres can be yours – MLive.com

Posted: August 22, 2021 at 3:24 pm

BUTTERFIELD ISLAND, MI - You could own your own Gilligans Island, of sorts, where you can do anything with the land except change its name.

The entire 31-acre Butterfield Island is on the market for $475,000. Also known as Island No. 7, Butterfield Island is only accessible by boat and is located northwest of Drummond Island.

This is MLives dream property of the week where every Wednesday we have featured a House of the Week.

This island is essentially a blank canvas for the next owner to do what they wish with it and that includes building an amazing home. Basically, the only things youll find on it right now are lots of trees and a natural sand beach.

Years ago, there was a cabin on the island and not long ago there was a tennis court on it, but for all intents and purposes, right now its a vacant island. Its been vacant for years, Suzanne Sasso Kuusinen from Drummond Island Realty told MLive.

Butterfield Island, aka, Island No. 7, on the market for $475,000. (Photo by Suzanne Sasso Kuusinen | Drummond Island Realty)

At one time, Kuusinen said the island did have a cabin on it, as well as a tennis court, but those are long gone.

If you look at the aerial photo, you can see some gray area. That is some concrete. Some people think that area might make a good helicopter pad or a good location for a cabin or something along those lines. That pad of cement is as much development as youll see on the island now.

Butterfield Island, Michigan, located near Drummond Island. (Google Maps)

There are more than 50 islands surrounding Drummond Island. Kuusinen says Butterfield is in a nice spot because its protected by a couple of those islands from the elements.

There is remnants of an old dock. Thats kind of where the best part of the sand beach is on the island. Its fairly protected on that side by Macomb and Maple Islands to the south and southwest. Those islands are privately owned and not for sale and give Butterfield some protection. That sand beach would be a great location for a cabin or structures because its protected by the wind. But really, the whole island is great.

There is an old wellhead down by the water. Most of the private island owners around here pump water from the lake and put it in a filtration system. Thats probably what a new owner of this island would do.

The island is not far from the Canadian border, which adds to the location, says Kuusinen.

The island does sit in U.S. waters, but its not very far from Canadian waters. Once we are able to go back and forth to Canada like normal, its great to go fishing and boating there and explore the Canadian waters. So, you get the best of both worlds there.

Butterfield Island, Michigan, located near Drummond Island. (Google Maps)

So, how do you get to Butterfield Island exactly? Kuusinen says the best way is by private boat from Drummond Island, a roughly 15-minute trip.

The previous owners have mostly come from Drummond Island, keeping their boats docked at one of the marinas on Drummond. You could also come from Detour Village located on the U.P. mainland if you wanted to. Either of those would be good landing points.

So, if you end up building your dream home on this island, what about living there year-round or winter?

Theres going to be a period where you cant access the island in the winter because of the ice, but once the ice freezes on the north shore, you can take a snowmobile there, Kuusinen said. If someone wanted to build a home there and stay in the winter, they could. Theres only to my knowledge, one island in front of Drummond Island, James Island, where the folks live there year round. Most use them as a summer retreat.

Here is the link to the islands listing and click here to see all the photos. You can contact Suzanne Sasso Kuusinen at Drummond Island Reality at 906-493-5230 or via email.

Women Own These Stunning New Hotels On The Islands Of Paros And Antiparos – Forbes

Posted: at 3:24 pm

Suite with private pool at Cove Paros

It seems like it's been forever since I last traveled to the Cyclades Islands in Greece. Still, my hesitancy of traveling internationally during a pandemic soon disappeared as I arrived at the island of Paros. I decided to book a resort that did not require a rental car, instead choosing a property where I could walk into the bustling, white-washed harbor village of Naoussa, which is the center of activity on the island.

While Mykonos and Santorini were becoming packed with tourists, the more relaxed vibe of Paros and its smaller neighbor Antiparos appealed to me as a safer, relaxing sanctuary. I crafted a wonderful few days of exploring both islands, focusing on less touristy options and more private excursions.

It was genuinely refreshing to see that numerous new hotels on the islands are owned and operated by powerful young women, all dedicated to spectacular design, hospitality, and creating a unique experience for guests that will last forever.

Youli Papaioannou, owner of Cove Paros Hotel

PAROS

Cove Paros Hotel

Cove Paros is owned by the beautiful and charming Youli Papaioannou; her family has been in the hotel industry for years, having launched their first hotel in Zakynthos in 1992. Tourism and hospitality have always been a part of her life, and she has a personal attachment to the island and the childhood nostalgia surrounding it. Having spent countless summers there with her family, she wanted to recreate the magic of those moments for her guests.

The passion for hospitality is an enduring mystery that Greeks are well acquainted with, says Youli. Its in the culture, in the history, there were ancient laws protecting its sanctity. Its also probably unavoidable, at some point or another, that an entrepreneur in Greece like myself would take an interest in tourism and the opportunities it makes available. Just the topography of the Cyclades on its own would inspire anyone to fantasize about their own boutique sanctuary. But it takes a special formula of creativity, will, and commitment to realize our aspirations and make our inspirations tangible.

Main pool at Cove Paros

Paros is one of the most popular of the Cyclades Islands, famous for its wide sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, and secret coves for exploring. It is also easily reached from Athens, with high-speed ferries or short, direct flights. I preferred the ferry, and when booked in first class, it features a top deck private space with a butler offering up food and bar service.

The main village of Paros is Naoussa, which is filled with traditional tavernas, upscale restaurants, and bars. The area is quite packed with young locals and visitors every night, adding to the thriving energy of the area, but there are many options for finding a waterfront table for dining. Around my stay, there were superyachts delivering celebrities like Justin Bieber and Charlize Theron and billionaires like Jeff Bezos, all exploring the charm of the island.

RADA restaurant on the beachfront of Cove Paros

Cove Paros is the newest resort on the island of Paros, located an easy walking distance into town. The high-end aesthetic of the resort matched with authentic Cycladic hospitality makes the property one of the most sought-after for visitors. With its enviable location positioned directly on the soft sandy beach overlooking the tranquil Agioi Anargyroi coast, it is the perfect retreat for couples and families alike.

The resort was created with stunning modern design, all curated by the architectural firm eDje. Usually, hotels with minimalist aesthetics are cold and sterile, but Cove Paros is so well designed that you feel as if you are in your own private villa.

Interior suite bedroom

The hotel offers 45 suites, of which five are signature suites with private swimming pools and are truly the best way to experience this beautiful hotel. They have elegant interiors, a big outdoor terrace, a master bedroom with a sumptous king size bed, a seperate living room with two sofa beds, and a stunning bathroom with possibly the best water pressure I have ever experienced at an island resort.

Cove Paros staff (r to L) Owner Youli Papaioannou, GM George Zarbalas, Martina Ebeid, George ... [+] Kerkemezos, Pavlos Sevasti, Theodosiou, Alex Katamaje, George Petroulakis, Fokas Hristoulas, Kostas Mihalaros, Nikos Vlahos

Lazy days here are spent soaking in your private pool, swimming in the gorgeous main pool, or reclining on the sandy beach with plush chaise lounges, palapas, and foodservice. Meals are expertly crafted at the resort's own RADA restaurant overlooking the beach, utilizing pure produce and seasonal ingredients. The staff is young and energetic, and by the end of your stay you will likely know everyone by their first name.

Dinners are a late experience in Greece, usually starting at 10 pm. We spent hours walking through the narrow stone passageways of the town past countless boutiques and many tavernas. The charming waterfront is filled with colorful fishing boats seemingly melted together in the packed harbor. There are numerous dining options, including the most popular (and overpriced) Statheros and Barbarossa, but try and select a taverna where locals hang out to avoid the tourists.

Athanasia Comninos, owner of The Rooster Hotel

ANTIPAROS

The Rooster

The Rooster is owned by the elegant and charming Athanasia Comninos. Her adventure in Antiparos started when she wanted to create a destination for personal growth and where guests can experience happiness in simple pleasures.

Comninos has two children and left her career in interior design and magazine work atVogue Greece. After working for her family's shipping company, she decided to leave it all behind and focus on her personal passion project. She cares a great deal about Antiparos and safeguarding it. You will never see a beach club with cocktail service or DJ thumping main pool at this property; this is tranquility at its finest.

Rooster villa on Antiparos

Antiparos is located less than one mile from the larger island of Paros, where the seven-minute ferry travels from port to port every hour until after midnight. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about at the sparkling new hotel called The Rooster, which is located on Livadia Beach.

Antiparos is a quiet, reserved island filled with special charm and loaded with attractions. It is obvious why so many famous faces make this island their summer home (Tom Hanks owns a villa here.)

Spa pool at The Rooster

Designed as a wellness and lifestyle resort, The Rooster is not overly dramatic or pretentious. It is created more as a holistic experience and an escape from civilization, with its camouflaged aesthetic blending into the hillside. This is slow living at its best.

The Rooster offers up 16 individual houses, all with a unique style where you feel like you are in your own private home. There is also a separate Farm House that sleeps six guests. All of the houses include private gardens, outdoor showers, and direct views of the sea or the surrounding landscape. You may never see another guest during your stay unless you venture to the main lobby and bar area. There is no central pool or service on the beach in order to create a more tranquil, private, less resort-like experience.

Villa bedroom at The Rooster

The House of Healing is one of the true highlights at the property where guests can participate in guided rituals, like the sacred bath, sound healing, or practicing yoga and meditation during the entire stay or a day visit like myself.

The therapists are masterful, including Abi, who provided one of the best ayurvedic massages of my life. With only two treatment rooms and a small outdoor pool, the spa was created to be your own personal sanctuary where you will rarely encounter another guest.

Executive Chef Andreas Nikolakopoulos (second from left) with Sous Chef Anna Fotiadis, (second from ... [+] right)

Headed by rock star Executive Chef Andreas Nikolakopoulos, dinner in the secret garden under the stars is an evening of pure foodie pleasure. The farm-to-table restaurant features freshly caught fish, locally sourced vegetables from the resorts farm, all incorporated into modern international cuisine.

One of my favorite spots at the hotel is the huge open-air bar overlooking the sea, where the bartender mixes up passionate cocktails as you watch the spectacular sunsets over the isolated bay.

Boating adventure in Paradise

HOW TO EXPLORE BOTH ISLANDS

I discovered Seacret Cruises after doing extensive research on the best way to explore the islands of Paros and Antiparos when you have limited time. The young, handsome owner of the company Dimitris Vakakis created a masterful morning of exploring with a luxury RIB boat, enabling us to venture into hidden caves, tunnels, and secret bays.

Most charter companies have catamarans or yachts that do not provide access to these hidden spots, but with Seacret Cruises, you have the opportunity to truly discover new places for privacy far away from the boats filled with tourists.

We embarked from Aliki port on Paros around 9 am for a tour around the best spots of Southern Paros and Antiparos Islands. The typical day cruise lasts 8 hours, or a half-day cruise can be booked for either morning or at sunset.

Dimitris Vakakis, owner of Seacret Cruises

We visited caves for underwater exploration and stopped at rocks for diving all along the landscape of South Antiparos. The boat gave us access through cave tunnels opening up to ideally still water for swimming. Dimitris also provided snacks and cocktails at the most romantic private sandy coves.

The perfect itinerary for the morning was visiting the stunning Panteronisia (blue lagoon), Faneromeni Beach, the famed Seal Caves, the uninhabited island of Despotiko with its archaeological finds, and then dropped off for lunch at the famous sea-side restaurant Captain Pipinos on Antiparos. There are many more options for land exploring but in the sweltering summer heat, being on the open sea and swimming in the warm waters was the best way to spend your holiday.

Queen backs Prince Andrew to keep prestigious Armed Forces role – The National

Posted: at 3:24 pm

THE Queen has shown her support for PrinceAndrew, backing the Duke of York to keep his honorary role as colonel of the Grenadier Guards.

Andrew holed up in Balmoral after a US lawsuit was launched against him by Jeffrey Epstein accuser Virginia Giuffre, who has alleged that the royal sexually assaulted her when she was a teenager.

The prince has strenuously denied all the allegations against him.

Queen Elizabeth has now let it be known that he should keep his honorary military role, military sources told The Times, branding it unsatisfactory and very difficult.

They told the paper: The Queen has let it be known to the regiment that she wants the Duke of York to remain as colonel and the feeling is that nobody wants to do anything that could cause upset to the colonel-in-chief. It is a very difficult, unsatisfactory situation.

His position is not tenable or viable. How can you have a colonel who cant perform the role? For the brief time he was in post, he was a good colonel, but the feeling across the regiment is that its not appropriate to retain him. You cant have a colonel who cant do public duties.

Andrew, like Prince Harry, no longer carries out hispublic duties, but unlike the Duke of Sussex he has not been forced to give up his military titles.

Giuffre took legal action against Prince Andrew saying it was past time for him to be held to account.

Allegations in the civil suit seeking unspecified damages at a New York federal court claim she was lent out for sexual purposes by convicted sex offender Epstein including while still a minor under US law.

The lawsuit says: "In this country no person, whether president or prince, is above the law, and no person, no matter how powerless or vulnerable, can be deprived of the law's protection.

"Twenty years ago Prince Andrew's wealth, power, position, and connections enabled him to abuse a frightened, vulnerable child with no one there to protect her. It is long past the time for him to be held to account.

The lawsuit alleges that Giuffre was sexually abused while aged under 18 at Epstein associate and former girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwells home in London, at Epsteins New York mansion and at other locations including Epsteins private island in the US Virgin Islands.

Maxwell has pleaded not guilty to sex trafficking charges and faces trial in November.

Epstein took his own life in jail a month after he was arrested on sex trafficking charges.

The documents claim Giuffre "was compelled by express or implied threats by Epstein, Maxwell, and/or Prince Andrew to engage in sexual acts with Prince Andrew, and feared death or physical injury to herself or another and other repercussions for disobeying Epstein, Maxwell, and Prince Andrew due to their powerful connections, wealth and authority".

Virginia Giuffre

The duke engaged in the sexual acts without Giuffre's consent, while aware of her age and while "knowing that she was a sex-trafficking victim", the documents claim, adding the alleged assaults "have caused, and continue to cause her, significant emotional and psychological distress and harm".

"Prince Andrew's actions, described above, constitute extreme and outrageous conduct that shocks the conscience," the lawsuit stated as it described the emotional distress suffered by Giuffre.

"Prince Andrew's sexual abuse of a child who he knew was a sex-trafficking victim, and when he was approximately 40 years old, goes beyond all possible bounds of decency and is intolerable in a civilised community."

Andrew has denied claims that he slept with Giuffre on three separate occasions, saying: "I can absolutely categorically tell you it never happened. I have no recollection of ever meeting this lady, none whatsoever."

The duke also said he has no memory of a well-known photograph, above, of him with his arm around Giuffre's waist at Maxwell's house, and has questioned whether it was his own hand in the image.

This New Caribbean Private Island Retreat Lets You Get Away and Give Back – Robb Report

Posted: August 14, 2021 at 12:38 am

Together, the British Virgin Islands (BVI) are the Carribeans unofficial capital of privacy. The BVIs roster of five-star resorts is a whos who of seclusion, with many located on their own islands. Most famous is 74-acre Necker-bought by Richard Branson when he was still under 30, now with room for 40 guestsbut extreme-sports-loving visitors should rent out Eustatia instead, which has a water-sports center packed with toys, all under the supervision of instructor and professional kiteboarder Charlie Smith. Plus, from October, yachties can completely commander the nine-room Saba Rock next door, founded as a diving base in the 1960s before morphing into a hotel, while the eourmous Guana, at 850 acres, feels more like a private country for 35 guests.

Richard Branson spent more than two years rebuilding Necker Island, including the brand-new Bali Hi house, with its own pool right on the beach.Jonathan Cosh/Visual Eye

All of these resorts are reopening after a long stretch of being shuttered. Hurricane Irma laid waste to the area four years ago, ripping up most of its trees and destroying or severely damaging 85 percent of its buildings. While recovery was relatively swift, the pandemic then arrived with its own devastation. Now, finally, the BVI are back open, with the added bonus of a new arrival among these long-established resorts: the Aerial.

Sitting on 43-acre Buck Island, just southeast of Tortola, it was listed for $25 million after the previous owners death and snapped up by 33-year-old Britnie Turner. The Nashville-based entrepreneur and real-estate developer was smitten by the BVI from her first visit, with Branson, on a retreat to Necker. (Shes also signed up to be Virgin Galactic passenger number 800.) After Irmas wreckage, Turner immediately pitched in to assist the territory, even moving to the BVI for several months to help manage relief programs.

The Aerials unofficial penthouse has 360-degree views from the top of this turret.Aerial BVI

The new hotel is intended to support her mission for economic as well as emotional uplifthence, the Aerial. The purpose of this island was never for me to have an escape, somewhere to goof off on the water, she says. The point has always been to orchestrate as much good as possible. Travel specialist Miriam Omphroy from Embark Beyond, who has particular expertise in the BVI, singles out the Aerial from its peers. Its a paradise in paradise, a peaceful, healing place where you can reconnect with nature, and the chance to give back has a ripple effect on the local community, she says.

Turner thinks of the private island as a restorative retreat for up to 30 guests. (Buyouts start at $40,000 per night, with a three-night minimum.) The five residences, all rock walls and wide-planked wooden floors, are deliberately open to the breezes, bringing nature into the rooms. Unexpected details such as swings instead of seats and an in-house recording studio add a playful whimsy. These buildings are also positioned in a cluster, better to protect the countryside, as most of it is heavily forested. Turner is currently building a few stand-alone villas nearby, each of which can do double duty, either for spa treatments or as an oversize, ultra-private suite.

The central lodge features quirky details like this oversize hammock slung from the ceiling in the common area.Aerial BVI

The property is operated sustainably, with food sourced through the islands farms. Theres also a full roster of wellness programming, from red-light therapy to environmental healing. Nature changes people, Turner says. It makes you find that purpose, that meaning, the energy to be able to push through any obstacle. Guests are also encouraged to give back to the local community, whether by tagging turtles for conservation efforts or helping with reef cleanup. Theres even a petting zoo, with a twist: Every animal has been rescued, whether zebras once destined for a hunting ranch in Texas or ponies earmarked for a Mexican slaughterhouse. Its called Redemption Farm.

The Aerials pool deck is the perfect place for aperitifs.Aerial BVI

Turner hopes that the blueprint shes work-shopping on Buck Island can become a template to be repeated elsewhere. Indeed, shes already had inquiries. It wont be a copy-paste of this place, though, she says. I dont know a ton of millennials owning an island where you can heal, relax, be calm and also give back. Come on, thats everything.
