PokerStars Ambassadors Excited Ahead of Sunday Million Anniversary – PokerNews.com

Posted: at 5:27 pm

March 20, 2021Will Shillibier

This weekend the PokerStars Sunday Million celebrates its 15th anniversary with a $12.5M GTD spectacular.

To mark the occasion, PokerNews caught up with PokerStars Ambassadors Arlie Shaban and Felix Schneiders to hear all of their Sunday Million memories, and how they are preparing ahead of this weekend.

Remember! There is still time for you to satellite into the Sunday Million Anniversary, just head to the PokerStars client for more details.

Want to stay up-to-date on all the latest PokerStars news right here on PokerNews? Why not try out the new PokerStars Hub!

PokerNews: Thanks for speaking with us Arlie and Felix. Its pretty crazy that the Sunday Million is 15 years old. When did you first play?

Arlie Shaban: I first played the Sunday Million about 10 years ago when I was very new to online poker.

Felix Schneiders: I think I first played the Sunday Million during a live training session for the PokerStars School together with the community in 2009.

PN: What was it like? What do you remember about it?

FS: It was lots of fun as we had everyone railing and being active in the chat of my PokerStars School Live Training class, which was really motivating.

AS: It feels amazing to be able to play for such a large prize pool without having to put up a large sum of money.

FS: When I first played I was a cash game grinder with almost no experience in tournament poker. I was set to play an all-nighter but the brutal reality was I busted pretty early.

PN: Why do you think the Sunday Million has become the iconic tournament it is today? What makes it special?

AS: The Sunday Million is a staple in the online poker world, its such an iconic game.

FS: Its the prestige. Just with the name alone. It allows recreational players to be able to compete for the dream of winning such a prestigious big field event without being a pro. I believe the Sunday Million is something that may even be known to people outside of poker due to its name and prestige.

PN: Are you looking forward to Sunday and jumping into the Sunday Million Anniversary yourself?

FS: For sure! The anniversary editions of the Sunday million are always special to me and my community. We have had deep runs from our community members, with two of my viewers scoring six-digit cashes! These years we are hanging out on Twitch, interacting in chat and through Discord while sweating each other during deep runs. It's great times for all of us!

PN: And Arlie, what would it mean to run deep or even make the final table of the Sunday Million Anniversary?

AS: Making the final table of this would be an absolute dream. The prize pool is MASSIVE and I cant wait to play. The satellites PokerStars is putting on are great.

PN: I know the satellites have been hugely successful, and it really gives the recreational players the opportunity to satellite in.

AS: Absolutely. It gives people off all bankroll sizes and change to play the game, and ensures that there will be a massive field.

FS: There are satellites for every bankroll and many different game types like Spin & Gos. I got my ticket through the $1 Neymar Jr satellite live on stream together with two other members of my community. Giving people with different bankrolls or even no bankroll at all the chance to play in such an event is just a great thing!

We asked Arlie and Felix for their top three Sunday Million tips! Be sure to keep them in mind if youre entering this huge tournament this weekend.

Poker Powher to Host Charity Tournament Featuring Leading Women in Esports – The Esports Observer

Posted: at 5:27 pm

Women in leading roles from Team Liquid, Evil Geniuses, G2 Esports, and Dignitas, will square off against each other in a poker tournament organized by Poker Powher and Team Liquid to benefit charity. According to organizers, the event highlights the importance of female representation in esports and professional poker.

The tournament will feature Evil Geniuses CEO Nicole LaPointe Jameson, Dignitas VP of Talent Heather SapphiRe Garozzo, Australian Twitch star and Team Liquid member Fasffy, and G2 Esports Head of Talent Britanni Johnson.

Women in positions of capital allocation who are empowered and skilled in making risk-assessment decisions are unfortunately scarcely in business leadership, LaPointe Jameson told The Esports Observer. Poker Powher flips the table by making these skills accessible through a social and competitive game, and is an important initiative to support both through this tournament and in EGs DEI initiatives.

The organizers behind this event, who are almost all women at Team Liquid, began planning it as part of our Womens History Month celebration because we wanted to do more than just recognize women in esports, said Cris Amaya, head of events at Team Liquid. We wanted to find a platform where we could unite women from across the biggest orgs, and showcase their influence on our industry. It was a natural fit for us to partner with Poker Powher, because poker and esports pros face the same challenge: the games we love and work in are often not welcome to us as women. While we cant change that by ourselves, we can start by joining together, supporting one another, and becoming a stronger voice than we have alone.

The two-day tournament will also feature commentary from professional poker veterans Melanie Weisner, Gillian Epp, Xuan Liu, and Alexandra Doc Chauran. An advanced player competition will take place on March 25 at 6 p.m. EST, while a beginners game will take place on March 26 at 1 p.m. EST. Both games will be streamed live on Poker Powhers Twitch channel.

Poker Powher is a company that advocates for teaching women the fundamentals of poker and the games transferable lessons to life and work through a global network of clubs, tournaments, and corporate events for women by women. Participants will be playing for a charity of their choice.

Everyone coming together for the Women in Esports Charity Poker Tournament knows that poker and esports are so much more than games: each hand or match requires critical thinking, determination, and skill, Erin Lydon, Managing Director & GM at Poker Powher tells TEO. At Poker Powher, we are on a mission to not only invite more women to the poker table, but also to educate our students on why this game is a game-changer for learning how to make better decisions in school and business and life.

Weisner, strategic adviser to Poker Powher and one of the commentators for the advanced players portion of the competition, explained why she wanted to be a part of this event: Poker is an incredibly exciting arena, but being a woman in it has come with its challenges. Often, Im the only woman at the poker table and have to deal with other players objectifying, patronizing, or dismissing me. Even though poker and esports only require your hands and mental skill, women are vastly underrepresented in both. Im incredibly proud to come together with women who have found a voice in gaming for this event and get more women at the poker table.

Editors note: An earlier iteration of this story listed Alienware Arena as a partner for this event. It is has been adjusted to correct that Team Liquid is the partner of note for this competition.

Online Poker Must Evolve Alongside the Rest of the Gaming World, But How? – State-Journal.com

Posted: at 5:27 pm

There are few games as long-lasting and widely valued as poker. Its rules, history, and the professionals themselves all command a certain level of respect from amateur players, fans, and relative outsiders alike, and the place it holds in popular culture ensures that it will never fall back into obscurity, as so many games have done over the years.

To be sure, one of the most powerful forces that has been continuously driving it forward is the online gaming industry, which first took this seminal game into its clutches back in the 90s shortly after the advent of the world wide web and transformed it into what was, at the time, an incredibly futuristic and high-tech version of the game.

By todays standards, of course, those earliest digitalisations would seem incredibly primitive but that neednt matter, as the incredible popularity of the genre of online poker ensured that it never fell behind the forward thrust of the rest of the online gaming industry, and that it continues to impress and inspire both professionals and newcomers alike.

Still, the gaming industry does not stand still, and the coming years will no doubt see plenty more advancements in the realm of PC, console, and mobile game development. So, how can online Poker ensure that it weathers yet another storm of progress? Read more below.

Preserve the Ecosystem

Watching the professionals play their hands is, for many, an inspiration; being beaten time and time again by the professionals is an almost unanimous recipe for defeat and, eventually, relinquishment. A good poker site will not grow complacent over the divide between professional and amateur; instead, they will facilitate a healthy, sustainable ecosystem for all players.

The popular site GGPoker.com is paradigmatic of this; while they represent a home for many of the worlds most notable poker players, such as Daniel Negreanu and Fedor Holz, it also remains one of the most accessible and widely enjoyed sites in existence.

By prioritising pros who wish to see the industry grow, things naturally fall into place, and amateurs have the opportunity to be inspired and challenged by the professionals, rather than bullied away from the game altogether.

Follow the Rise of the Mobile

While much of the world of online poker remains distinct from the wider trends that exist within mainstream gaming, it cannot distance itself entirely from the ebb and flow of player movements. That is to say that, while players will continue to flock to online poker despite the changes occurring in the wider realm, the only way to ensure the continuity of the genres growth is by embracing player trends wherever possible.

The most notable example of this lies, of course, in the increasing significance of mobile gaming. Cloud-based streaming services and renewed interest in mobile app development owing, in all likelihood, to the new wave of power hungry, 5G ready devices making their way onto the shelves mean that more and more of us are going to be spending an increasing amount of time gaming on our phones.

This is a remarkable market to capture and, already, many of the worlds leading poker sites have embraced mobile development in order to stake their claim on it. A desire to keep improving, augmenting, and streamlining their mobile services will, however, prove integral to maintaining a pattern of growth over the coming years.

Continue to Prioritise Player Security

This one is relevant to the entire gaming industry, not just the genre of online poker. In recent years, some of the worlds most well-known and trusted companies have fallen prey to significant and costly cyber-attacks and the real victims of those attacks have been users who trusted these sites with their sensitive data.

As users grow increasingly wary of services vulnerabilities, then, one of the only ways the online poker industry can hope to sustain itself is by investing into stronger and more rigorous measures that protect the players, and ensure that the enjoyment of the game is not spoiled by concerns over their private lives.

Transparency, and the ability to go above and beyond the bare minimum, will remain the cornerstones for any successful online poker site in the coming years.

Similarities Between Crypto and Poker: How to Succeed in Both – Cryptonews

Posted: March 16, 2021 at 2:49 am

The text below is an advertorial article that was not written by Cryptonews.com journalists.

Cryptocurrencies and poker might not seem very similar at first glance; after all, the former is a type of electronic cash (or even the basis for a full programmable decentralized network), while the latter is a game that relies on luck (but much more often on brains, psychology, and keeping your cool). There are, however, some striking similarities between the profiles of professional players in both niches. The main one is seemingly obvious: skill, with a sprinkle of luck, maximizes your chances of profit, but never guarantees them. After all, where is the fun in that?

Their shared qualities go beyond this one. Lets take a look at some of them regardless of whether youre already experienced in either industry, looking to improve your skills, or simply seeing if you can incorporate anything into your day-to-day philosophy, there is (as always) something for everyone.

When your hard-earned money is on the line, some pressure is to be expected. The exact amount will depend on the type of person you are, but the fact is, knowing how to perform in such conditions regardless of how you usually deal with itcan make a world of difference. Keeping a cool head while having to make a decision, often in a split second, and still have it turn out favorably for you is a skill shared by both the best poker players and cryptocurrency traders, as well as one many other people could also benefit from.

Generally speaking, there is no way to evade risks in life. They tend to crop up with pretty much everything but people who prefer their comfort to the excitement will often go to great lengths to evade them. Both poker players and crypto traders are at the opposite end of the spectrum, seeking out new opportunities. This, however, also takes a lot of skill: knowing when to fold is as important as any specific, highly curated strategy.

Both of our previous skills tie into this one: to not crack under pressure and to be able to manage your risks while remaining comfortable with them takes serious self-discipline. Risk-taking is inherently emotional and hotheadedness can land you in trouble more often than not. Reining yourself in before you do damage to your funds without a basis, in reality, can definitely be hard, which is why this is such a valuable skill.

At first glance, this might seem like more of a poker-specific skill, in which it is very important to know how to read your opponents. After all, in cryptocurrency, you never know who youre up against alternatively, you are against the market in its entirety. But you can simply see the market or your asset of choice as a sort of opponent: by keeping yourself informed of any relevant changes, as well as knowledgeable about what makes the market move, you can stay abreast of all the volatile changes.

This one is pretty obvious: thanks to the unpredictability of both, poker players and cryptocurrency traders constantly have to be on the lookout for ways to increase their odds. This can be done to increase your skill, make some easy wins, but it is admittedly not nearly as exhilarating as winning at high stakes (or investing in an obscure asset that ends up taking off beyond anyones expectations). Striking the balance between the two is not a one-time event, and to be successful in poker and/or trading, you have to be prepared to make choices like these all the time.

Once the hand has been dealt, there is very little you can do about it. The same is true when you have invested in a certain crypto asset. The only thing you can control at every moment is your own reactionand if it is bad, youre the only one being actively harmed. Professionals understand this: knowing that you cant change anything about your circumstances at a certain point frees up your mind to make informed choices, which can again lead you to make the best of your situation, no matter what it is like. Best of all, this skill is definitely applicable everywhere in life!

If you have been in the cryptocurrency space for longer than a fortnight, someone has probably already told you the old, oft-repeated adage: Never invest more than you can afford to lose. This is true when it comes to trading any high volatility asset (and surprisingly, holds true even if youre trading forex or other low volatility assets, just in case). Sometimes theres just no winning, and when youre down on your luck, it is important to know where and when to stop.

This can be a tough pill to swallow in both niches, but for different reasons. In gambling, if you have maintained a long losing streak, you may believe that you must win at some point. This is, of course, blatantly untrue: the universe isnt fair, contrary to popular belief, and nobody can guarantee that you will win if you keep playing long enough, let alone make up for your losses.

On the other hand, cryptocurrency traders often study graphs and charts to see how an asset has behaved in certain circumstancesbut here, too, it may not be playing by the same rules when the same thing occurs again due to a myriad of other, less obvious reasons. In short, pros dont put their faith in the past and what they believe should happen.

There is a pattern in these shared qualities: professional poker players and crypto traders both have to be cool, calculating, discerning, but also willing to go off on a limb and seize an opportunity when it shows itself. The latter means that not everything is simply due to skill (which can be learned!), but that luck plays a part, bringing the unpredictability aspect into the fold. But these skills can make all the difference between relying on luck alone and having it be the final, small nudge towards victory.

Poker Players Can Gain These Three Advantages By Playing Crypto Poker – Top10PokerWebsites

Blockchain is currently taking the world by storm, with multiple industries already adopting the technology, including the online poker industry. What makes blockchain so popular and relevant these days is its decentralized nature, which offers utmost security and privacy to the users, and provides a strong layer of protection from system intruders and cheats.

Below, weve compiled the key benefits of using blockchain and cryptocurrencies in online poker. You might want to consider these when choosing which online poker sites to join.

Blockchain is powered by encryption and complex mathematical numbers that make it difficult for data to be altered. This means players can be sure that their personal data are protected from falsification and hacks.

Since blockchain is decentralized, users have full control over their transactions. They can choose to not give away personal information, and they dont have to rely on a central authority to process things.

Additionally, blockchain ensures that your funds are safe even without a central authority taking care of it. You just have to adopt basic safeguard measures to protect your account, such as not sharing your private key to anyone.

Another advantage of transacting via blockchain/cryptocurrencies is avoiding high fees. Since you dont need middlemen and other intermediary agents when making transactions, expect to pay relatively lower fees compared to using traditional financial services. Some online poker sites even allow players to deposit or withdraw their funds without paying any fee.

Similarly, online platforms can also charge lower rakes as there are no intermediaries involved, plus you can get a rakeback incentive on selected sites.

The volatility of cryptocurrencies makes it possible for you to grow your winnings. Bitcoin (BTC), for example, is currently on a bull run, with its value being on the rise since the COVID-19 lockdown. It reached a 12-month high of more than $19,000 in December 2020, and look where it is right now.

BTC has recently successfully breached the $60,000 mark. So imagine if you collected your winnings in BTC in early 2020 and simply held on to it for about a year, your funds could have grown by more than 1000% now!

A lot of online poker players are already aware how that works, that is why some of them are now choosing to withdraw their winnings in BTC. Online poker sites accepting BTCs, such as Americas Cardroom, are now seeing a surge in demand for this cryptocurrency.

Of course, price drops are also inevitable and thats what makes the crypto journey a challenging one. But with the right knowledge and strategy, you can always bounce back, stay in the game, and boost your career.

New 12-Table Poker Room Coming to Sky River Casino in 2022 – PokerNews.com

Posted: at 2:49 am

March 12, 2021Chad Holloway

Earlier this week, the Wilton Rancheria tribe and Boyd Gaming broke ground on Sky River Casino in Elk Grove, California. The new casino is scheduled to open in the second half of 2022 and PokerNews has confirmed there are plans for a 12-table poker room.

The $400 million casino project, which is being built on 35.9 acres of land west of Hwy 99, was approved by the National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC) back in 2019. That followed the land having been placed in federal trust in February 2017 and then-Governor Jerry Brown and the Tribe signing a Gaming Compact, the California State Senate and Assembly then unanimously ratified that compact.

Sky River Casino will be the seventh tribal casino in the Sacramento region, though it will be the closest casino to both Sacramento and the South Bay Area. When it opens, the venues are slated to have not only the 12-table poker room, but also 2,000 slot machines, more than 80 table games, and 12 distinct dining options. In addition, there will be a hotel and convention center.

Sky River Casino is being developed and managed by Las Vegas-based Boyd Gaming on behalf of the Tribe. Boyd operates casinos in Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Pennsylvania, and Nevada. In Las Vegas, theyre known for operating venues such as The Orleans, Gold Coast, and Sams Town, just to name a few.

"We will create an entertainment destination that this entire community can take pride in, one that will deliver significant and lasting benefits for the Tribe and the City of Elk Grove.

The casino project is expected to create thousands of jobs and major long-term benefits to the surrounding economy as Wilton Rancheria has agreed to invest $186 million over the first 20 years with the City of Elk Grove and Sacramento County to support police, schools, roads, and other services.

We are excited to achieve this critical milestone in our economic development and path toward self-sufficiency, said Tribal Chairman Jesus Tarango. We thank Boyd Gaming, the Elk Grove community, the City, and leaders at the local, state, and federal level for their tireless support and for believing in our vision of a better future.

We are honored to partner with our friends at Wilton Rancheria in creating a secure and prosperous future for the Tribal membership and their generations to come, said Keith Smith, President and Chief Executive Officer of Boyd Gaming. Together, we will create an entertainment destination that this entire community can take pride in, one that will deliver significant and lasting benefits for the Tribe and the City of Elk Grove.

On Tuesday, a groundbreaking ceremony was held with local officials attending, including Elk Grove Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen. Governor Gavin Newsom also delivered a congratulatory message via video.

Heres a video on the Wilton Rancheria and how the new casino project came to be:

PokerStars in 2021: Eight Predictions for the Global Online Poker Leader – Pokerfuse

Posted: at 2:49 am

Online poker at PokerStars, part of Flutter plc, had a fairly solid 2020. The poker part of the business enjoyed growth of 17% year-over-year.

This was, in large part, due to the coronavirus, which led to an explosion of interest in online poker. However, since Flutter took over the reins last May the company also committed to increasing investment into the poker division. With continual product improvements, a new marketing direction and increased generosity to players, the brand is in a much stronger position today than a year ago.

With that said, a lot of work is still to be done. While PokerStars remains the global leader in poker, its share of the online poker market has reduced in recent years, admitted the group in its annual report earlier this month. The company is embarking on a new strategy that places multi-year investment across product, technology and marketing, it was stated.

In this third installment in PROs series of articles looking ahead into 2021, we consider eight such investments we expect to come this year.
