A horrible bad beat came at the worst time during 2021 World Series of Poker Main Event final table – For The Win
Posted: November 17, 2021 at 12:57 pm
And then, there were three.
Just a trio of players Koray Aldemir, Jack Oliver and George Holmes are left at the final table of the 2021 World Series of Poker Main Event. And although Joshua Remitio finished fourth (dont be TOO sad, he ended up with $2.3 million for his efforts), this hand is an all-timer that he may not forget.
With five players left at the table, Ozgur Seclimis who was involved in a quads beating quads hand earlier in the tournament and his 40 million-plus chips got dealt pocket Kings. Remitio had 16.1 million, which meant he needed to make a move at some point. He got the 10-9 of diamonds, a decent spot to make that move. Seclimis raised to 2.4 million and Remitio went all in.
Check out that flop
Two 10s!! THE CROWD GOES WILD! Seclimis lost and would eventually end up in fifth place, taking home $1.8 million.
Well see who wins the whole thing soon enough.

The Cryptocurrency Market, Poker, Gaming, and Their Network Effects – The Daily Hodl

HodlX Guest PostSubmit Your Post
Currency relies on network effects for success. Much like the marketplaces it enables, a currency is only as useful as the number of participants willing to conduct business while utilizing it as a medium of exchange.
In that regard, currency is not special there exists an entire product class that relies on network effects for success. Products, such as multiplayer games whether League of Legends or poker rooms cryptocurrency exchanges and social networks are only as valuable as their liquidity the number of active participants.
Ive seen network effects firsthand while Ive worked for the worlds biggest poker companies and game publishers. The success of poker rooms depends on the number of players willing to play games at certain stakes.
In principle, one can have an amazing poker product such as the software of an actual casino but fail as a business because the number of players willing to play largely depends on the number of players already playing. Such businesses need to bootstrap the network before the poker room becomes a success by providing strong incentives for early players and potentially bringing in house players to get the games going.
League of Legends is one of the most played games in human history. Its easy for new players who are seeking competition at their level or stakes preferences to join the player pools. Over 100 million players enjoy the League of Legends platform, meaning, individuals joining the game will find their counterparties.
Network effects help users to connect with others who play similar roles or have complementary skill sets as themselves increasing their chances of success. Competing with League of Legends is extremely hard not just because of the product but because the user experience is deeply tied to the depth of the player pool.
Marketplaces are the ultimate network effect-dependent product. Consumers want to find their desired products at price levels comfortable to them. Some people will go on eBay and shop for a watch that costs $3,000, while others go on eBay to shop for a watch that costs $30.
Depth of liquidity defines ones ability to interact with the network of participants providing various products at various price points.
In crypto, network effects create interesting scenarios. Raising capital in private sales depends on the private validation of a project. Public capital performs proportionately to private validation, which is measured by the amount of capital raised in the private sale. The entire sequence is ironic, considering the expected outcomes of network effects.
Essentially, the success of a medium of exchange (cryptocurrency), which depends on its acceptance and use by a sizable proportion of the public (network effect), is determined by a small group of private investors who initiate a chain reaction.
Network effects play a pivotal role in ensuring the success of our industry. Bitcoins resilience, both technically and economically, is attributable in part to network effects.
Cryptos total market cap has grown from approximately $340 billion to $2.3 trillion in a year an almost 700% increase. This success is attributed directly to the volume of transactions and the number of market participants and projects in the space. Every new entity creates value by introducing more opportunities for interaction to other players, further fueling the blockchain economy.
Macro factors have played a major role in the rise of cryptocurrency prices, but the importance of network effects cant be understated. One new person joining the crypto ecosystem leads to a positive feedback loop that expands exponentially as more people join, creating an increasingly valuable industry with each additional participant and interaction point.
NFT marketplaces, DeFi, play-to-earn and the explosive growth of CeFi are all happening concurrently, with tremendous positive spillovers between the products.
Network effects are at the core of forming cities and sometimes entire industries such is the case of Silicon Valley, where a group of companies creates positive spillover effects for one another, triggering the creation of additional companies. The formation of companies triggers the inbound traffic of more skilled labor and the creation of more efficient marketplaces.
A lot of the realities around us in terms of employment, innovation and education are also driven by network effects and the resulting resiliency thats created through an increasing number of participants.
We are seeing a similar global boom happening in the blockchain economy, as growing volumes and number of users draw opportunistic entrepreneurs, causing a spike in investor interest and availability of capital which is then used to attract talent that develops the next generation of products and services.
The 2020-2021 bull cycle thus far has been a blessing for crypto enthusiasts worldwide. Weve seen true generational wealth form (and lost), and lives forever changed. The good times may eventually end, but one can hope with strong intentions were at the precipice of something special and era-defining.
One of the defining outcomes of this cycle was the fact that millions of new users have gotten their hands on both cryptocurrency and cryptocurrency-enabled products. This cycle has forever changed the fabric of finance and how we view money.
Weve seen network effects take hold and drive financial products into the mainstream with successful IPOs, millions of users and billions of dollars in funding most being the product of previous bull cycles companies established between 2013 and 2017.
Time will tell what paradigm shifts and market leaders will be born as a result of the 2021 bull cycle.

How a Single River Card May Have Changed Ark Onikul’s Life Forever – PokerNews.com

November 15, 2021Jon Sofen
Arkadi Onikul, who more often goes by Ark, was "out the door" on Day 7 of the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event. One lucky card later and he's now one of the top contenders to become the 2021 World Champion.
With 22 players remaining in the middle of Monday's session, the 35-year-old Las Vegas resident who hails from California ran into what appeared to be a nightmare situation. He had pocket kings and a stack of just north of 15 million at 200,000/400,000/400,000 blinds.
The local poker player faced a three-bet to 1.8 million from Mitchell Halverson, and then a four-bet to 4 million from Andreas Kniep, who was holding pocket aces.
When the action returned to Onikul, he saw an opportunity to either more than double up or to take down an already inflated pot as he hoped to build a massive stack heading into the dinner break. So, he decided to jam, and then after Halverson folded, he learned the bad news that he was up against the rockets.
The flop of was of no help to Onikul, and neither was the on the turn.
"I was out the door," Onikul later told PokerNews of the situation he found himself in at the time.
But the miracle two-outer, the came on the river and Onikul went from out in 22nd place to chip leader at 32 million. The difference between 22nd place and world champion is around $7.75 million.
So, one two-outer may have literally changed his life forever. Even if he doesn't go on to win the Main Event on Wednesday, that lucky card will impact his bankroll significantly in a positive way. And he already has some interesting plans for what he'll do with the $8 million if he ships the bracelet.
Onikul is no fish, and although he hit a lucky two-outer to stay alive, he's been a successful poker player for quite some time. Entering the Main Event, he had over $380,000 in live tournament cashes according to The Hendon Mob.
"I've been playing since Moneymaker, just mostly cash and a little bit of tourneys," Onikoul said. "During the pandemic, I played a lot of tourneys."
Although he's played poker for many years, this whole experience is new to him. When asked on dinner break to assess his play, he said, "overall, I've been playing well," and complimented the other players at his side feature table.
"I was having fun since the start of the tournament," he told PokerGO's Remko Rinkema. "[Fedor Holz] was at my first table, so I just joked around with him. I figured he was probably a fun guy, and he was. But then every single table has been social. We're all tired of the pandemic, we're all tired of online poker, and we just wanna look the man in the eye and say call or fold."
Onikul's already won more money in the Main Event than he ever has playing poker, and he now has an opportunity to win enough to set him up financially for life, all because of one lucky river card (and some impressive play along the way).

Poker Run breaks its fundraising record | The Times | Victor Harbor, SA – Victor Harbor Times

The Mud 'N' Tars Motorcycle Club's annual Poker Run has smashed its fundraising record, collecting more than $16,000 for the Fleurieu Cancer Support Foundation (FCSF).
The Poker Run sees primarily local motorcyclists head out on a tour of the Fleurieu Peninsula to raise money for the volunteer group that helps people on their cancer journey.
A group of 54 riders started the ride early on Saturday morning, November 13, riding more than 400 kilometres around the region before finishing up at the Royal Family Hotel at Port Elliot.
Last year, the club raised $15,000 for FCSF, but this year the total raised sits at $16,725 - an impressive effort considering the group was smaller than usual.
Sponsorship co-ordinator Vlasta Krejcir said funds were raised for FCSF through raffles, donations, and T-shirt sponsorships and sales.
"It's a good day out for everybody, you feel good doing it," he said.
He said a few members of the club have had relatives affected by cancer, so it was a great cause to support.
"What they (FCSF) do is pretty amazing, and they don't get paid for it, they don't get funding," he said.
"They're stoked and over the moon - they're looking at upgrading their car, they've got a car that's clocked up so many kilometres driving people to Adelaide and back for treatment."

Is Josh Arieh Running Away with WSOP Player of the Year? – PokerNews.com
Posted: at 11:23 pm
November 13, 2021Jon Sofen
With 10 days left before the 2021 World Series of Poker (WSOP) concludes, Josh Arieh is the favorite to win the traditional Player of the Year award.
This year, the WSOP added a separate POY leaderboard Velo No Limits exclusively for no-limit hold'em events. Cole Ferraro, with 2,032 points, is surprisingly atop the charts thanks to a bracelet win in Event #61: $600 Deepstack Championship and a runner-up finish in Event #26: $1,000 Freezeout No-Limit Hold'em.
Ferraro's lead certainly isn't insurmountable. Pete Chen is right on his heels trailing by just over 200 points, and Ben Yu is right behind him in third place. Scott Ball is also at another NLH final table. The full leaderboard is as follows:
A few weeks into the series, it appeared Phil Hellmuth, who won his 16th bracelet in October and reached five final tables, was on a crash course to WSOP Player of the Year. Since then, however, he hasn't done much of anything.
In fact, his last result was a runner-up finish to Adam Friedman in Event #36: $10,000 Dealers Choice 6-Handed Championship.
Had Hellmuth held onto his massive chip lead when heads-up play began against Friedman, he'd be right in the thick of things when it comes to the current POY race. Instead, he's now a longshot.
Arieh, like Ferraro, has been a huge surprise this year at the World Series of Poker. But, perhaps, it shouldn't have been too surprising considering he has an extensive history of poker success, starting with his third-place finish in the 2004 WSOP Main Event.
This fall, however, the Atlanta native is performing at an even higher level than ever before. Arieh has two bracelets in 2021, the first in Event #39: $1,500 Pot-Limit Omaha, and then the second a couple weeks later in Event #66: $10,000 Pot-Limit Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better Championship. On top of that, he reached Day 4 of the Main Event, but busted in 411th place.
The now four-time bracelet winner is clearly the favorite to win POY right now. But that doesn't mean he's lock. There are still some formidable competitors not too far off his pace, including Jake Schwartz, who has made four final tables. He'll likely need at least one more deep run and a couple extra cashes to go with it to catch up to Arieh, however.
Anthony Zinno, who also has two bracelets this fall, is another potential POY winner. And then Arieh is facing the perennial Player of the Year favorites Shaun Deeb and Daniel Negreanu, both talented enough to pull off a comeback late in the series.
On November 13, there were six bracelet events in action, including the Main Event. There are still an additional 15 tournaments left on the schedule before the series concludes two days prior to Thanksgiving. That means those trailing Arieh have plenty of opportunities to overtake his lead, but if he continues to perform at such a high level, the task won't be easy.
