The GPI Announces Return of Global Poker Awards, Adds Kevin Mathers To Team – PocketFives
Posted: December 17, 2021 at 10:37 am
The Global Poker Index and The Hendon Mob are finishing the year with a flurry of poker industry news beginning with this weeks announcement that, after a year away, the Global Poker Awards will return to the PokerGO Studio in Las Vegas on Friday, February 18.
Having skipped the industry awards in 2021 due to the global pandemic, The GPI is preparing for the shows imminent return. The 2021 Global Poker Awards will celebrate the year in poker by handing out more than 20 awards including 2021 GPI Player of the Year, Players Choice for Toughest Opponent, Best Vlogger, and the hand-selected Poker ICON award.
While the full list of awards have yet to be announced, and some changes are expected, previous awards that are likely to be handed out again include Breakout Player of the Year, Event of the Year, Journalist of the Year, Final Table Performance of the Year, and a variety of poker content awards.
The voting process for the awards will be announced in the immediate future with voting to take place early in 2022. Fans will also have their say with three different Fan Choice awards. However, in the meantime, the Global Poker Awards are looking for feedback from the community.
Most award shows you have to submit your candidacy, we looking for more of that, said Eric Danis, President of the GPI/THM on the most recent episode of their The Poker Show podcast. We do a lot of work in the background, we have great people that help us but if you know someone, or an article, or anythingthat you want to recognize, make to submit that info to us @GPI on Twitter or you can always email us as well.
Within 48 hours, the GPI and Hendon Mob were making news again with an announcement of the latest addition to those people that help in the background as Kevin Mathers has signed on to join the team as the new GPI/THM Poker Information Manager.
Typically, an industry hiring, even an important one, would understandably fly under the radar however Mathers has cultivated one of the most prolific Twitter accounts (@Kevmath) in the poker community by being a constant source of information relied on my recreational and professional players alike. With more than 10 years on the inside of the poker industry, perhaps most well known as the Twitter Czar for the World Series of Poker for a number of years, Mathers is one of the most trusted and popular names in the game.
As one of the most respected sources of information in the poker community, we are thrilled to have Kevin on board, Danis said. We have always dreamed of adding Kevin to the team. It means a lot to us to welcome Kev to his new home and we are excited for what he brings to the table.

Winning Poker: Playing the Anti-Range Game – CardsChat.com
Posted: at 10:37 am
December 17, 2021Poker Strategy
In the old days of poker analysis, much was made about putting an opponent on a hand. Astute players used their power of observation, memory, card sense, and deductive reasoning to try and figure out what their opponent was holding. Even so, it was usually impossible for even the most sagacious hand reader to accurately deduce their opponents exact hand. So skilled players focused instead on the range of hands that an opponent might hold.
For example, one might recognize that an early position raise from a tight player meant they were likely to hold any of the following hands: JJ, QQ, KK, AA, or AK. Put an opponent on playing that range, and you could come up with a reasonable strategy for exploiting them.
All well and good. Figuring out an opponents range is a key part of a winning strategy. But theres another related concept that can also help you exploit your opponent. I call it the anti-range.
Anti-range doesnt seek to determine the likely range of hands that your opponent is playing, but rather, the hand or hands that they are likely not playing. This too involves observation, memory, card sense, and deductive reasoning. And, done well, it provides another way to develop an edge over a less-skilled opponent.
Heres an example of applying your observation of anti-range:
Youve been playing for an hour or so in a moderately loose $2/$5 game. Youve seen enough of some of your opponents to figure out their general style of play. An active, loose-aggressive, tricky, fairly good opponent, in early position, raises to $20 pre-flop. Its the standard raise for the game. A couple of loose players call. The action comes to you in the cutoff. You have 22 and call the $20 with the hope of set mining. Four of you see the flop with $83 in the pot.
The flop is 3 5 K, missing you completely. You have last action. The villain bets $50, the two limpers fold, and the action comes to you.
Normally, you would fold. You called with your 22 hoping to hit a set, but missed. In many instances, this should be an easy and fairly normal fold.
But, in this case, taking a different line could win you the hand.
Consider your opponents anti-range that range of hands that he is very unlikely to be playing. While his range is very broad and could include a flush draw, a pair of Kings, a medium or big pocket pair, and maybe even a bunch of bluffs with a couple of big cards and no pair, its highly unlikely that he hit a set.
With a set, he would almost surely check. (Of course, theres always a chance that he is playing extremely unconventionally. But thats true whenever you are putting someone on a range as well.)
In this instance, you know your opponent fairly well. You know, for example, that he often C-bets, and is fairly aggressive. You know your image is that of a fairly tight ABC player. Therefore, his bet of 60% of the pot could mean an enormous range. So when he fires a bet on the flop, you really have no good way of narrowing down his holdings except for determining his anti-range.
As we noted, your opponents range is pretty wide and could include a wide variety of holdings. They might have an over-pair, a big ace, or could even have been playing a big King aggressively preflop and now has a pair of Kings. On the other hand, he may have started with a mid-sized suited connector and hit complete air.
You really dont know with any degree of certainty how to narrow down his holding.
But you can be fairly certain of what he doesnt have. You can be fairly certain he doesnt have a set because, if he does, he would be very unlikely to play aggressively in this spot. So you can subtract sets from your opponents holding, narrowing his range through the process of elimination.
You, with a relatively conventional, tight-aggressive image, might then use that information to take the pot away from him by representing that you hit a set. You might raise him here, or float him and show aggression on the turn, for example.
Its surely not certain to succeed, but your perception of your opponents anti-range gives you a way of exploiting them.

Dont Worry, Play Poker: 7 Unnecessary Causes of Angst for You to Let Go – CardsChat.com
Posted: at 10:36 am
December 13, 2021Poker Strategy
I play in a lot of different poker games in casinos and in home games. As a result, I meet a lot of beginning and intermediate players who are often extremely eager to learn everything they can about the game.
They read. They observe. They take notes. They pay attention. They focus really hard. They think and worry a lot about the game. The problem is, they often worry about the wrong things. Their concerns arent helpful theyre distractions.
Ive identified seven worries that many newer players have, but dont need. I mention each one in turn, with a few words on more appropriate concerns.
1. Creating a table image
Players often worry about creating an image at the table. They want to know what they should do to create an image of a wild player, a conservative player, a loose player, or a solid player. They may even make moves that they know are hurting their bottom line, just to create an image. But these worries are misplaced.
You have an image. Every moment you play, your opponents are noticing you and your actions, and then forming an opinion about what type of player you are. You leave an impression, in some way, on everyone, every time you act. So dont waste time worrying about creating an image. Concern yourself instead with recognizing what your image is.
Once you realize what your image is and different opponents may have different images of you you can begin to exploit it.
2. Not looking foolish
New players and home-game players visiting a public poker room often worry about looking foolish. They dont want to embarrass themselves by violating poker etiquette or by doing something that will tag them as an amateur or inexperienced player. My words to them are, Who cares?
So what if you look new and inexperienced? Use your image as a newbie or fool to your advantage and dont worry about it.
3. Picking up physical tells
I was guilty of worrying about this when I first arrived in a public poker room. I honed in on every little movement of each player and I tried to decipher what each twitch or tick meant. It was a huge distraction and it drove me crazy, but I thought that if I only concentrated enough, I would surely spot some amazing insight into whether my opponents were strong or weak, or were bluffing or value betting.
The problem is, devoting so much attention to minute details seldom produces much fruit. Its chiefly the stuff of movies, not real poker games.
Sure, it helps to be observant and some players do give off signs that indicate whether theyre nervous or calm. But, in general, in the typical game against typical players, the energy you spend watching for small unintentional actions wont be nearly as fruitful as just broadly characterizing a persons general style of play.
Focus instead on noticing and remembering whether your opponent is loose or tight, passive or aggressive, tricky or straightforward. If you can observe and remember these easily observable traits, and act accordingly, youll be far ahead of the game and much better off than if youre worrying about whether they lick their lips, shift their weight, or wiggle their ears before they bluff.
4. Winning and losing
Ask a typical player about a session and theyll typically talk about how much they won or lost, or whether they won or lost a specific hand. And of course, players love to tell bad-beat stories. But, generally speaking, these are some of the least important parts of a playing session.
Whats really important isnt their result, but rather, how they played. By focusing on the critical decisions they and you make on difficult hands, youll quickly come to understand that winning or losing, while important, should be secondary to the quality of your overall decision-making process.
Sure, losing sucks, but if youre comfortable with the quality of your overall play, then its easier to accept that variance is real and that, in the long run, making the right plays should help you come out ahead.
5. How the cards are running
This may seem obvious to even beginning players, but whether youre blessed with especially good cards or not isnt worth worrying about, as you have absolutely no control over what youre dealt. So, why concern yourself with things you cant change?
Even so, players often lament that theyre running bad or crow about how theyre getting by the deck. Some so-called strategists even write about leaving when its just not your day, or youre just not getting the cards, This is mystical and unhelpful thinking. Sure, you may have been suffering a long losing streak. That happens, but it can also only be known retrospectively, so theres no need to worry about it.
On the other hand, if youve been losing for a long time, your image may have changed. Concern yourself with addressing that, because it is something you can control.
It may also be that your long losing streak has sapped you of the ability to play your best game, and if you conclude that youre unable to play a winning game, that may be a reason to leave. But dont worry about whether a losing streak is likely to continue or end. Those worries dont help you at all.
6. If opponents leave the game
Ive seen many players get upset because one player or another either regularly leaves the table to take a break or leaves the game entirely. Sometimes theyre upset because their game is somewhat shorter than normal. Other times, theyre upset because a player has left when theyre ahead. Both of these concerns are misplaced and unnecessarily distracting, and theres nothing you can do about them.
If a winning player leaves the game, that may be to your advantage, not disadvantage. Maybe theyre better than you and the game will get better by their absence. On the other hand, you might want to change your strategy based on the temporary or permanent departures from the game.
If the departure leaves the game short, you may want to bluff or value bet more, depending on the style of the remaining players. If the big fish was the one to depart, leaving the game with a bunch of nits and solid players, you might want to leave too, as the game may no longer be profitable.
Similarly, if the departure leaves an empty seat, you might want to move your seat, based on your relative position to the loose and aggressive players in the game.
7. Winning a poker argument
Winning a poker argument is the last thing you should worry about.
I frequently see extremely heated arguments over whether a player made a good or bad play on a prior hand. Players often defend their actions as feverishly as if they are defending their honor. This applies to good and bad players alike.
Remember, however, theres no reason to either point out an opponents bad play or to defend your own. In fact, the opposite approach is often more profitable.
Think about it. If your opponent attacks your play and hes correct, learn from it, dont argue. If his attack is wrong-headed, it benefits you not to prove him incorrect, as hell remain with a mistaken view of the game. Similarly, if he takes an action that you know to be wrong, youre surely better off not to draw his attention to his own error, as doing so would make him less likely to make the same mistake in the future.
Your ego may shout to correct his attack and to point out his flaw, but your bankroll will profit by remaining silent.

A Comprehensive Guide to Online Poker Rooms: How it works? – The Game Haus
Posted: at 10:36 am
While most people started playing poker offline, the online version takes things a notch higher. Players can enjoy the game for free, wager the smallest stakes imaginable or play in high-stakes tables. Even better, regardless of whether you are trying poker for the first time or playing your millionth hand, thebest online poker rooms in Australiawill always have the right table for you.
Whats Online Poker?
Online poker refers to the traditional card game known by many as poker played through the internet. Players can access online poker in different casino sites alongside a wide range of games and varying stakes. Leading online casinos also offer live poker, for players looking to experience the authentic experience of betting in a traditional casino from the convenience of their home.
Live Poker vs Online Poker
Whether youre playing live poker with a human dealer or online poker where a computer algorithm deals the cards, the rules of the game remain the same. However, online poker tends to run faster and comes with minimal risks compared to live poker as you can play for free or wager very low amounts. Additionally, online poker is more accessible as most casino platforms offer it, unlike live poker which is only available on leading sites.
Online poker wont allow you to interact with the players or the dealer, so you wont be looking at anyone in the face. You might need some time to get used to it, but there are many ways to know whether a player is bluffing.
How to Get Started With Online Poker
To start playing online poker, you only need the device you use to browse online and a stable internet connection. Fortunately, most online poker sites dont take any space on your phone or computer memory and these devices have the necessary processing power to load the game without lagging.
With online poker, you dont need a lot of cash to get started and you can even practice for free using play money before staking your hard-earned cash. After having fun, most people choose to deposit $50-$200, which is enough for them to keep betting for a long time.
The key is wagering low as you continue understanding the game and choosing a casino that offers you a generous bonus on your initial deposit. For example, if you have $100 on your bankroll, you can start with $1 tournaments and increase your wager as you accumulate more cash.
How to Play Poker Online
If youre planning to play online poker at home, the first step is choosing a legitimate casino site that has all the features you like. Some casinos require you to download gaming software to play their games, but the overall memory demand is very minimal on your computer or mobile phone. However, there are no download poker sites that offer an exciting gaming experience, but they might not have the same features.
Once you have chosen an online poker site, youll need to register a betting account and youll be ready to get into a poker room and start playing the games you like. Players who want to wager with real cash will need to deposit cash into their bankroll using your credit card or online e-wallets like Skrill, Neteller, and PayPal.
Which Poker Games Can You Play Online?
There are various poker variations you can enjoy in an online casino, but not every site offers all the variations. However, Texas Holdem is the king for most poker players and it has grown to become the most famed poker game across different casinos.
Thousands of online poker sites offer No-Limit Texas Holdem 24/7 at different levels to please the needs of various players. In this game, youre given only two cards and you need to combine them into any of the five community cards to create the best hand possible. Fortunately, the game is quite simple to understand but quite difficult to master. That makes it a great introduction to the poker world.
Texas Holdem also comes in different formats, ranging from standard cash tournament to jackpot and speed poker. Other popular poker variations that players can find online include 7-Card Stud, Chinese Poker, Razz, Short-Deck Holdem, 5-Card Draw, Pot-Limit Omaha, and Omaha Hi-Lo.
Simple Poker Tips
Whether you like playing poker for fun or want to take the game more seriously and earn some cash in the process, there are certain things you can do to minimize your losses. For a start, you need to ensure you understand all the rules before you wager with real cash. You also need to set a budget for your bets, as its unlikely youll be winning money consistently.
Besides learning the rules, learning how to play using a basic strategy is crucial to your success. There are lots of strategies involved in poker, so youll need to study a lot to understand everything. That might take years to fully grasp, but youll be a truly accomplished poker player once you understand all the strategies. You might also want to experiment with different poker formats to see which one youre better at playing.

December 17, 2021 December 17, 2021 Paul Butcher https://plus.google.com/116893384630351018637
The Global Poker Index (GPI) are hosting the Global Poker Awards (GPA) at the PokerGO Studio in Las Vegas once again. The Hendon Mob (THM) and GPI are working together to finish the year on a high note.
The PokerGO studio will once again play host to the GPA ceremony. The GPA awards were supposed to take place in 2021 but due to the outbreak of COVID-19 it was not able to proceed. The GPA will be handing out 20 awards like the GPI Player of the Year, Best Vlogger, Players Choice for Toughest Opponent and Poker ICON award to name a few.
The entire list of awards that are going to be handed out, have not been announced yet as there is some changes to be made. Some awards that have been handed out in the past include Event of the Year, Final Table Performance of the Year, Breakout Player of the Year and Journalist of the Year.
The voting begins in January 2022 and fans are also allowed to vote for three awards. Eric Danis the President of the GPI/THM said poker fans can send in their nominations via email to GPI or contact them via Twitter.
The Hendon Mob and GPI made a new addition to their team as they signed Kevin Mathers.
Kevin Mathers signed up to join the GPI/THM team and has become their Poker Information Manager. Mathers has been in the poker industry for over 10 years and is one of the most popular and trusted individuals in the game and his expertise will help GPI/THM.
Danis said they were happy to have Mathers on the team as his experience will make a big difference to the GPI/THM team. Usually when the GPI/THM hire new individuals it does not make headlines in the poker world but Mathers has covered the WSOP on Twitter for a number of years.
Mathers tweeted that he was happy to join the GPI/THM team and said he looked forward to working with them as their Poker Information Manager.

Comedian Michael Ian Black Talks Poker and if "The State" Will Ever Return – PokerNews.com
Posted: at 10:36 am
December 12, 2021Jon Sofen
Michael Ian Black, one of the funniest humans alive, was in Las Vegas Saturday competing in the RunGood Poker Series (RGPS) All-Stars ProAM at the PokerGO Studio. PokerNews caught up with the comedian during a break to talk a little poker, a game he enjoys, and a possible reunion of "The State," the show that made him famous.
The RGPS 64-player invite-only tournament brought in some non-poker celebs such as Boston Rob Mariano, Beth Hall, and Black, along with many talented poker pros like Brad Owen, Mike Matusow, and reigning world champion Koray Aldemir.
"Joe Stapleton said, 'Hey, do you want to come out here and do this thing?' Black said of how he ended up in the RGPS event. "I was like, 'I haven't been to Vegas since pre-COVID, I just moved to a new city, and I'm going a little stir crazy."
The 50-year-old comedian recently moved to Savannah, Georgia where he's unable to play poker, he said. There aren't any card rooms nearby, but the oceanside scenery is magnificent.
Black got his big break in television in 1993 when MTV launched one of its first sketch comedy shows called The State. Many great comedians such as Black and former "Reno 911" goofball Thomas Lennon parlayed their performances on that legendary show into lengthy careers in comedy.
In the 1990s, MTV was as cool as the other side of the pillow to the younger generation. The State, which had a cult-like following at the time, was one of the memorable shows back when MTV was still popular. For those still holding out hope of a reunion or reboot show, don't hold your breath.
"Probably not," Black said when asked if he could envision a show reunion. "Probably because there's just so many of us (in the cast), and it's very hard to coordinate schedules, and also nobody has shown any interest."
Black still keeps in touch with many of the cast members, including Lennon, but the logistics of bringing back The State, which went off the air in 1995, don't seem probable. But you'll always have the internet to remind you how Black and Lennon once sexualized pudding.
Black was in Las Vegas for the RGPS event but didn't have much luck. He was eliminated prior to the dinner break and wasn't among one of the 11 players who cashed. But this wasn't his first rodeo on the felt.
During the early parts of the poker boom era, he appeared multiple times on Bravo's hit poker show, Celebrity Poker Showdown, which was hosted by poker pro Phil Gordon and actor/comedian Dave Foley.
The celebs on Celebrity Poker Showdown were mostly inept at poker but highly entertaining, much of why the show was so successful. Black, however, along with Jennifer Tilly and a few others, was actually a competent player. Most others, he admits, were "terrible." How has his poker game evolved since that era?
"I'd like to think I've gotten better, but that was 15 years ago," the comedian said. "So, I mean, I'd like to believe I'm a better player. But even back then I was a better player than most on the show."
Black doesn't compete in the high-stakes Hollywood home games. He says they're way out of his price range.
"I can't even afford to play in this," he joked. "Maybe if they'd play some $0.25/$0.50 games I'd play with them."
That said, the stand-up comic headed next door to the Aria poker room to play a $2/$5 no-limit hold'em cash game.
As for his career, the long-time comedian recently wrapped up a stand-up comedy tour that included stops in Boston, Massachusetts, and Wilmington, North Carolina.

Combining cryptocurrency and the online poker industry with Black Poker Token – AMBCrypto News
Posted: at 10:36 am
The online poker market has grown exponentially, it is estimated that in the last year around 10 million people have joined the service, helping to move a billion-dollar market, with some championships surpassing the 1 million dollar prize. It is also known that the only area where cryptocurrencies have not exploded is in the online poker industry. Cryptocurrencies can offer online poker players many advantages, such as security, speed, and transparency.
Therefore, CEO Sakuma created the Black Poker Token which is a cryptographic asset that will be used on the blackpoker.pro platform. The blackpoker.pro platform seeks to increase the interactivity between cryptocurrencies and online poker. With open-source instant transactions, it will offer the security that only a blockchain can provide to poker players. Also, being in a decentralized network, the platform will also be able to reach users from countries where the sport is prohibited, giving more freedom to these players and being the differential of conventional platforms. The Black Poker Room will be the first to combine cryptocurrency and the online poker industry in a professional way. Cryptocurrency offers huge exponential growth for poker players, both in the short and long term. The inclusion of cryptocurrency and blockchain in the online poker industry nullifies the rake effect, which increases any poker players profits tenfold.
With just a few days of release, the Black Poker token has already been listed on Coingecko and CoinMarketCap, they are still in the process of negotiating entry into a major exchange. The success achieved by the token has attracted the attention of well-known figures, including a UFC champion who is following the project closely and will soon announce the partnership as stated by CEO Sakuma, when asked about his personality, the CEO prefers to keep the secrecy so that the process can materialize.
Today the revolutionary platform is in the final stages of development, undergoing security and usability tests. It is believed that the project will follow in terms of market value both the rise of online poker platforms and the success of blockchain projects.

The Origins of Poker and how it continues to entertain the masses – edtimes.in
Posted: at 10:36 am
If you were to ask one hundred people to name the first card game that comes into their head, chances are, Poker would come up most often. Over the years, it has developed dozens of variations and has established itself as the most popular card sport in the world with the eye-watering tournament cash prizes.
The international nature of card games allows for them to transcend language barriers and country borders. Combine this with the advent of the internet where people come together within online sites like the Poker 888site and youve got a pastime that can be enjoyed by anyone.
The thousand year long history of Poker is just as interesting as the game itself.
The origins of Poker
The genesis of the card game, historians do not agree on. One school of thought places the game in China, in the 10th century, where an emperor adapted an early form of Pai Gow. Pai Gow, sometimes referred to as Chinese Poker, is an ancient game played with Eastern variants of dominos. It doesnt take a huge leap to think the word Poker could have derived from Pai Gow.
Another theory hails from the Middle East and a card game called As Nas, some six hundred years later. The As Nas deck consisted of only five suits and five identical cards within each suit.
The As cards, or the aces, usually depict some sort of animal, since As is Persian for animal. And the Nas cards were court cards portraying people from different social classes, from royalty to dancers Nas being the word for people.
This deck and the game played with them has clear similarities to Poker with the only difference being, sequences like flushes and straights didnt exist. Its likely a combination of these origins contributed to the modern form of Poker we are now familiar with.
Poker reaches Europe
A French game, Poque, was garnering popularity in the 17th century. Poque and the German Pochen were both loosely based on the Spanish game, Primero. This was where the all-important aspect of betting and bluffing was finally integrated into the game and combined with the outcome of the cards dealt.
It was the French colonists in the New World that brought the game of Poque to the shores of North America, specifically to territories around the Mississippi river which would become part of the United States in 1803. Over the following half a century an anglicised form of the game, Poker, evolved along with the 52-card deck that we know today.
Poker in the present day
The game was played in saloons up and down the states and across Europe for the next hundred years but it found its true home in the casino. In the 1970s, the most popular variant emerged, Texas Holdem.
During Texas Holdem matches, each player receives two hole cards (the ones dealt blind) which are then combined with the communal cards which arrive incrementally. No limit Texas Holdem tournaments currently offer the highest cash rewards to the pros.
In the late 1990s, the pocket cam played an integral role in the growth of poker as a spectator sport. During televised competitions, a transparent section of the table with small cameras mounted underneath allowed the audience to see each players hand. Prior to this, commentators could only guess at what cards were held based on the bets they were making.
Poker and the internet
Perhaps the most important piece in the puzzle is the internet. The world wide web has brought people from the furthest reaches of the planet together and attracted an unprecedented number of new players to the sport. It is common now to learn that todays professional players honed their craft online before even playing a hand with a real deck of cards.
Popular culture and poker
The game has established an elevated status in the world of TV and cinema. Movies like Casino Royale, Mollys Game and Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels show both the best and worst sides of the sport but imagery of huge stacks of chips and subsequent hands being revealed, and phrases such as Im all in have entered the popular zeitgeist.
The future of poker
People are continually looking for ways to bring players together and also to combine more of the real casino feeling to the home. Live casino successfully does just that. Real life dealers in custom built studios are filmed in hi def and streamed to players devices to bridge the gap between the virtual and the real world.
Consumer virtual reality (VR) technology is also a big growth factor for the casino industry. The tech has improved substantially in terms of brands such as Oculus VR and become more affordable which has led some of the bigger online casinos to develop online versions of casinos for players to patronise.
Its a game enjoyed by so many, worldwide and has even become a viable career choice for those that take it seriously. With the level of funding that casinos and poker institutions are in receipt of, were sure if there are developments to be made, theyre good places to keep an eye on and were excited for what the next big change might be.
