Poker has long been one of the most popular gambling games. Every top online casinos offers a game of poker, but you can also play it during home games. Lets start, of course, with the traditional, even classic, version of poker. It is often referred to as five-card poker, five-card poker. We are dealing with a deck of 52 cards. The players at the table each get five cards to themselves. Then there is a round in which each person can trade up to 4 cards. So we get new cards from the pool and based on that we will make the right hand or not. Strategy is very important here, where after we get 5 cards we have to decide which hand we are going for. Of course, the player who has the best cards, or the others have given up, wins. Classic poker is the easiest style of this card game, and most of us first encountered it.

Texas Holdem, on the other hand, is the most popular form of poker in which we are dealing with a very specific game. There are many online casinos in this style, so we can play Texas almost anywhere. Here, too, were dealing with a deck of 52 cards. The game itself here always starts with a mandatory bet made by the players at the table. They then each get two cards in their hand, which they will use throughout the game. At the same time, the first auction begins. After that, the game host will put 3 common cards on the table. Based on them, we may have a good deal. So there is an auction between the players bid, pass, raise. Our 4th common card will be placed on the table. After this move, we deal with the auction again and wait for the last, 5th card to be revealed. Then we already know what cards and hands we are dealing with and we can go straight to the final bidding, where at the end it will be shown who won the whole game. Texas Holdem is so exciting that we cant be sure until the very end what our hand will be. Thats why many people take risks or bluff.

This style belongs to the sports poker category and is very similar to Texas Holdem. In the first round, players are dealt 4 pocket cards each. Then the game host lays out 3 community cards and the first auction begins. After that, the fourth card appears on the table and we auction again. Then the 5th card appears, followed by the final auction and card showdown. The difference, however, is the card selection system. Out of all 9 cards, we have to choose 2 of our 4 cards and 3 cards from the pool of 5 on the table. This means that there are many more possible combinations, which will greatly diversify the game.

Here we are dealing with another popular variety, which is basically the same as the aforementioned Omaha. The difference, however, is that the pot on the table doesnt just go to the player with the best cards. We are dealing with a high hand and a low hand. The latter involves the collection of junior cards from 2 to 8, though preferably in order. The ace is considered the lowest card. Thus, the best junior hand is A 2 3 4 5. 4 5 6 7 8 is the oldest possible hand in the Low category. There are times when the player with the lowest hand also has the strongest cards in his hand, so he takes both the high and low pot.

This is another popular variation where you can be sure that this card game is on the online casino list. Here we are dealing with an interesting hand in which each player gets two cards in the beginning. Then everyone gets 1 card face up. Whoever has the youngest card starts the auction. The players are then dealt the 2nd card and the person with the highest bid. Then we get the 3rd open card and bid. On the 6th hand, we get the 4th open card and bid again. Then each player receives one card that is dealt. The winner is determined based on previously revealed cards or all remaining revealed cards.

These, of course, are just some of the many variations we will encounter in both casinos and home entertainment.

Its poker tournament travel time and, with COVID concerns dying out, many of us are planning on heading off to tournaments in the months to come. The World Series of Poker in Las Vegas will be starting in May, and there are lots of other tournament destination events for anyone whos willing to travel. With that in mind, heres a checklist of things to bring with you to the table in your next poker tournament.

I developed the following list after nearly 30 years of casino experience, and in conversation with dozens of other poker players. Of course, your specific needs may vary, so dont hesitate to add or remove items as you see fit.

I suggest you have a small shoulder bag or backpack to carry all of these items (except the money that you should keep on your person). While you may not need everything on the list, youll be better able to focus on your play, with these items close at hand.

Essentials: What to Bring to a Poker Tournament - CardsChat.com

Last weekends Irish Poker Open was a phenomenal event, organized and run brilliantly by JP McCann, Paul OReilly, and his team.

I was happy to see some of my friends among the winners

The record-field Main Event was won by Steve ODwyer who took no prisoners, knocking out every single player on the final table. I made three semi-deep runs, cashing the 6-max championship event and the Main Event before bubbling the Mystery Bounty. Add to that a small win in the action-packed cash games and it amounted to a break-even week for me but I was happy to see some of my friends among the winners.

Dan Wilson came fifth in the Main Event. Daragh Davey, Marc MacDonnell, and Dermot Blain made deep runs, all busting on Day 3. Nick Newport final tabled the Mystery Bounty. Michael Dwyer final tabled the 6-max. Jamie Nixon and Dominik Nitsche got second and fourth respectively in the 2000 ($2,169) High Roller. Ian Simpson cashed the 5000 ($5,423) High Roller, the JP Masters, and the Mini-Main. Padraig ONeill won a tidy sum in the big televised cash game.

It was also a successful week for my new poker enemy too. Alex Kulev was the biggest winner in the televised cash game. He also ran deep in the Main Event (after knocking me out with the very disrespectful 96 offsuit) whilst playing online poker on his laptop. The outcome?

Kulev eliminated me deep in the World Series of Poker Closer last year and pipped me for Irish Global Poker Index Player of the Year. Ok, fine he didnt pip me. My Irish-Bulgarian nemesis ROFL-stomped me and to use his words: I chose to be Irish last year because you didnt deserve it.

The Irish Poker Open is very special to me and so, when possible, I try to do some commentary at the event. My second bullet bust-out came at the feature table late onDay 2. It was too late to jump into anything so it made sense to offer my insights to Fintan Gavin and Emmet Kennedy on the livestream as it was the table of players with whom Id been battling all day.

Dermot Blain and Dan Stacey both showed their class

Andy Black was a powerhouse, hoovering up all the pots that nobody wanted enough. After one misstep cost him dearly midway through the day, he went back to the coalface (his words) and impressively rebuilt his stack before losing a couple of flips. Dermot Blain and Dan Stacey both showed their class, squeezing into the money and then kicking on.

During one of the few lulls in play, Kennedy asked me about my experience of playing my Day 1 with sticky-palmed chatterbox William Kassouf. I was blunt in my response, which sparked a follow-up question on the topic the next day by the events sideline reporter Laura Cornelius.

In September 2018, William Kassouf made a public statement about the events surrounding his expulsion from the Grosvenor Casino in Leeds. In it, he said that he was drunk and that he made an error of judgment which he greatly regretted and, as a result, he and Grosvenor, his sponsor, had mutually agreed to part ways.

It was a wishy-washy statement, offering no clarification or admission of what he had done.It was just the empty words of a hollow man, deliberately vague and carefully constructed to mitigate his actions and cling onto some ownership of the termination of his sponsorship deal.

Kassouf took a 100 ($131) chip off the roulette stack of his friend Ryan Mandara using a sleight of hand maneuver known as palming. It is a deft technique that absolutely requires practice, begging the question, when has he practiced palming chips and why has he practiced palming chips?

Popular poker pro Ian Simpson issued this important PSA on Easter Sunday:

In my interview, I referred to Kassouf as a sort of David Brent figure. Some people have asked me to explain what I meant by that. Firstly, there is an element of cringe with Kassouf. I dare you to watch back that WSOP coverage and not squirm. My main reason for the comparison, however, is that he is a fantasist, both the creator and main character in a world of his own invention. When his solipsistic belief system is threatened by an event or another persons will outside of his control, he simply bends the truth to suit his desired narrative.

It also wasnt lost on me that, in his own interview with Laura Cornelius, Kassouf repeated a lie he told to another player the previous day that he was bad beated in a big pot against me late on in Day 1. He told that player it was a 65,000 pot, which was weird because I only had 13,500 when I shoved my A5 suited into his big slick.

Barny Boatman also spoke out about Kassoufs proclivity for dishonesty:

I received a lot of feedback from my interview, with everyone who reached out telling me that it was a good thing that I called him out. I was obviously answering a direct question honestly but I wondered afterward if they might be wrong and I hadnt just given him the attention he craves. I wonder the same about mentioning him now in this piece.

This is the problem with people who court controversy and are shameless. A microcosm of this is whether to clock him right away when he starts his catchphrase-laden speech play carry-on at the table. He craves attention so, at some level, you are giving him what he wants and his bad behavior usually worsens after the floor has been called.

I have seen him stealing time from his table-mates

Kleptomania is a recurrent failure to resist the urge to steal, usually items of little to no value, that are easily affordable. People with kleptomania feel a strong urge to steal, experiencing arousal leading up to the theft and then pleasure and relief during the act. I have no idea how Kassouf felt when he palmed his friends chip but I have seen him stealing time from his table-mates and it does seem to titillate him.

In conclusion, I do appreciate that his scandal took place almost four years ago and my views might be seen as puritanical by some and even vengeful by others. If you believe in second chances then good for you but unfathomable to me is the opinion of some in the community that what he did wasnt that bad. Someone who steals from their friend is a pariah and if the framework doesnt exist for them to be black-listed, then they ought to be shunned. I honestly dont think we can afford to have any other opinion as a community as anything less puts us on a slippery slope to an amoral abyss.

Tired of cracking open a cold one? Try dipping a fiery piece of metal into a pint of beer, and youll be met with a fizzy, caramel surprise

The last two decades have led to an unprecedented beer boom in America, with all manner of speciality brews, niche regional styles and wild experimentation gaining traction in the beer zeitgeist.

Nowadays, its not so weird to hear that adding coffee to your beer is a delicious idea, or that slushy smoothie beers are worthy of the craft-brew treatment. Practically anything goes, as long as it tastes intriguing and adds joy to the hobby of nerding out over beer.

But I have to admit that using a red-hot steel poker to caramelize beer is, by all standards, a truly bizarre-seeming technique. The method is as simple as it sounds: You heat up a chunk of metal until its blazing hot, then dip it into a pint of beer, fizzing up a creamy head and cooking the malt and sugars inside the beer. Unsurprisingly, the technique is most commonly done with darker, sweeter beers, which some fans say makes for a flavor reminiscent of smores.

Doing it right means following a few basic rules: You need a long piece of metal that will retain heat and is food-safe, and an efficient way to heat it up. In the past, Ive used a small utility kitchen knife and a wide stainless steel straw, heated using a kitchen butane torch; you can use a stoves gas burner or even an actual fireplace if you prefer.

Malty beers like English or red ales, stouts and black lagers are perfect for the hot-poker treatment; the key is to use an ice-cold beer and pour it slowly, not releasing much of a head. Leave some room in the glass for a head to fizz up when the poker is inserted, and remember that the poker doesnt need much to do its job a few swirls of the tool is enough. Then drink while the foam is aromatic and the beer is still cool.

Hot-poking beer isnt a new fad: Theres a long history of colonial-era flips, as well as mulled wine and cider, that use a piece of hot metal to add flavor to alcoholic drinks. Beer-obsessed communities around Europe have long enjoyed the use of a hot poker in beer; in Germany, the tool is called a bierstachel. You can even buy speciality tools called toddy rods, mulling pokers and ale warmers.

In 2022, consider the hot-poker beer as a perfect transitional drink as cold nights fade into the warmer days of spring. Its a party trick that doubles as legitimate flavor-tweaker for your favorite malty beers and besides, who doesnt like playing with fire?

Sure, the prize money and prestige is obviously greater in a WSOP event but you know this game inside out and have fully prepared for the occasion.

It is worthwhile deciding before shuffle up and deal is announced that you set yourself a clear goal as to what you want to achieve in this tournament. Do you simply want to cash, or are you going all out to win? Both a very reasonable goals but need different strategies to realise those goals. Someone wanting to reach the money will likely take lines with less variance attached compared to someone who is hell-bent on finishing in the top three. Decide beforehand, but be prepared to adapt if things either dont go to plan or progress better than you anticipated.

Dont Let Burnout Ruin Your WSOP

Staying focused throughout the day is a difficult task because live poker plays much slower than the online world, plus a room packed to the rafters with up to a couple of thousand people is full of distractions.

Stay clear of watching videos on your tablet and concentrate on what is happening at your table. Many live poker players, especially recreational players taking a shot in a WSOP event, give off more tells than you could shake a stick at. Missing out on this free information should be a criminal offence!

Dont be afraid to take a few handwritten notes, much like youd take notes at an online poker table. It is a good idea to jot down any troublesome hands to look through later so you can concentrate on the next playable hand. Lastly, make the most of the scheduled breaks. Visit the restroom, head outside for some fresh air (and warmth) and perform some stretches to reinvigorate your body. Being tense and uncomfortable makes it challenging to focus on anything else. Loosening up your major muscle groups and getting he blood flowing properly will help you in this regard.

Hopefully, you have made it through to Day 2. If not, and you have busted before the money places, try not to dwell on it. Go through any hands that gave you trouble during the days action. They may be hands where you lost some chips, or a situation where you genuinely did not know where you stood during the hand. Get them out of your system now, accepting that you may have misplayed a hand, learning from any mistakes, before putting them to bed. You dont want to torture yourself all night over a hand that you could or should have played different.

How To Bring Your A-Game to the 2022 WSOP - PokerNews.com

Is philosophy an especially competitive discipline? How? Is its competitiveness a problem? If so, what might we do about it? In the following guest post*, Christina Easton, British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Warwick, takes up these and related questions.

In his memoir The Making of a Philosopher (2003), Colin McGinn describes his experiences of philosophical debate as involving

a clashing of analytically honed intellects, with pulsing egos attached to them Philosophical discussion can be a kind of intellectual blood-sport, in which egos get bruised and buckled, even impaled Plain showing-off is also a feature of philosophical life.

Commenting on this in her own memoir The Owl of Minerva (2007), Mary Midgley criticises this competitive conception of philosophy, joking that (since, in her view, it might be detrimental to the core enterprise of philosophy) these activities might be practised apart from philosophy, in Departments of Cognitive Poker, or Institutes of One-Upmanship.

To what extent is this competitive conception of philosophy still dominant today? And what place ought competition to occupy in philosophy? (These questions are tackled in a new, open access Special Issue on the topic in the Journal of Philosophy in Schools.)

There is one obvious sense in which philosophy is highly competitive, and thats in the sense in which academia, in general, is highly competitive: we compete against each other for scholarships, jobs, funding, etc. It may be that philosophy stands out as more competitive than other disciplines here, due to factors such as lesser availability of funding and more people looking exclusively for academic jobs following a PhD. But what about the practice of doing academic philosophy? Do the norms and practices of philosophy stand out from other disciplines as being especially competitive?

One increasingly well-discussed way in which philosophy might stand out as being competitive is with its focus on combative dialogue. This is highlighted by the language of competition and fighting that we use to describe what goes on at, for example, Q&As following research talks. We attack, target and demolish an opponent (Haslanger). Arguments suffer from fatal flaws and get shot down by counter-arguments (Rooney).

When combative dialogue in philosophy gets highlighted as problematic, note that its not usually the adversarial method itself that is under attack. Given the distinct subject matter of philosophy as addressing particularly intractable questions that are often unresolved by empirical evidence, presenting arguments and having people identify ways that such arguments go wrong is part and parcel of what it is to do philosophy. Rather, the issue is more with the manner in which this feedback on arguments is given. Counter-arguments are often presented in a nit-picking, competitive manner, so as to give the impression that the speaker is stupid and the interlocuter superior. Post-presentation Q&A can involve relentless attacks on the case just presented by the speaker, with the primary goal of audience members being to find flawsany flaws, however minorin what was just said, in order to prove that the speaker is wrong. These competitive attacks are unending (Friedman); the back and forth of argument is expected to continue until one member surrenders, at which point, someone has won and someone has lost.

If there is a competitive atmosphere in philosophy, why might it be problematic?

First, there is Midgleys worry that competitive behaviours might get in the way of what philosophy is really about. If we think that philosophy is a search for wisdom or the pursuit of truth, then we might worry that research seminars dominated by verbal smackdowns between competing individuals gets in the way of this. Competition encourages epistemically vicious modes of conduct; for example, grandstanding and one-upmanship can draw focus away from the search for truth and onto the individuals making arguments.

Second, and as I argue in a recently published open access article, competitive norms might be bad for philosophy by contributing to a lack of gender diversity within the discipline. One major reason is because competitive norms may lead to women performing less well in philosophy than they might otherwise do. Research indicates that performing a task as part of a competition tends to make men perform better than they would have done had the task been non-competitive, whereas it tends to make women perform worse. Women also tend to have more negative attitudes towards competitionpartly mediated by their tendency towards lower confidence (something which I think is, independently, an explanatory factor in the gender gap in philosophy). If women tend to enjoy competition less, then this might (for some women) lead to them viewing research talk Q&As as ordeals to be endured rather than as an enjoyable game or contest.

Yet even if the research is wrong and in fact these gender differences do not exist, stereotypes that say that women are non-competitive can have pernicious effects. First, they may lead to backlash effects against women who exhibit counter-stereotypical traits. Women who enjoy and show skill at intellectual blood-sportand maybe even engage in some showing-offmay be the subject of hostility, resulting in fewer opportunities and less enjoyment of participation in philosophy. Second, competitive norms in philosophy combined with gender stereotypes relating to competitiveness may result in people developing conflicting schemas (sets of implicit and often unarticulated expectations) for philosopher and women. This may contribute to women feeling that they do not belong in the discipline and consequently choosing not to continue (or begin) philosophy.

If this is right and there are major downsides to a competitive atmosphere in philosophy, what might we do to make competition a less dominant feature of the practice of academic philosophy?

One thing we might do is to improve the manner in which we engage in dialogue with each other, for example by working to eliminate norms where its acceptable to relentlessly attack a presenter or to nit-pick for the sake of proving someone wrong. (This might be especially helpful for the gender diversity issue just discussed, since research indicates that the gender gap is largest in competitions that reward stereotypically male traits such as aggression.) In this area, philosophy has already improved: people are less rude, and dominating a discussion tends to be frowned upon. As Helen Beebee writes in her recent assessment of whats changed in philosophy in the last decade, People are just nicer to each other.

But note that being nicer to each other doesnt fully resolve the problems flagged with competition above. Even where comments are delivered in a polite manner, alongside smiles and compliments about the paper, the competitive element remains. To borrow some words from Joseph Trullinger, it just makes it more of a gentlemanly duel as opposed to an unsportsmanlike war. The notion that one stands up in front of an audience and defends ones view in an attempt for it to win out amid the criticisms of the crowd is still very much alive.

Is that competitive, duelling element just inherent to philosophy? After all, examining arguments is key to philosophy (at least, in its dominant practice in todays academy), and arguments can be won or lost. Perhaps then it is the pulsing egos attached to the arguments that are the problem. Its our tendency to own an opinion or argument, to see them as things to be defended at all costs on pain of ones honour, that is problematic. If instead, we re-focused on our shared mission of uncovering truth or wisdom, then that competitive element might lessenwed delight in being proved wrong.

One practical means towards this change might be to use more group-orientated language when engaging in dialogue. For example: Perhaps it might help us work this out if we attended to Or: In light of X, we might need to revise our thinking on Y

We might also endeavour to place less emphasis on the need to pick a side. When we ask undergraduates to state their thesis as they introduce their paper, we could emphasise that this thesis need not be that a particular side of the debate has won out. Instead, it could identify which argument is the biggest threat to a theory, for example. When we review for journals, we could be more open to papers that dont defend a particular point of view, but instead shed new light on an issue and acknowledge its complexity, before raising some questions that arise from the reflections.

On this last point we can take a lesson from Elizabeth Anscombe, about whom Bernard Williams recalled:

she impressed upon one that being clever wasnt enough. Oxford philosophy, and this is still true to a certain extent, had a great tendency to be clever. there was a lot of competitive dialectical exchange, and showing that other people were wrong. I was quite good at all that. But Elisabeth conveyed a strong sense of the seriousness of the subject, and how the subject was difficult in ways that simply being clever wasnt going to get round.

Perhaps if, like Anscombe, we were to take philosophy a bit more seriously, as a genuine attempt to try and better our understanding, then we wouldnt be so inclined to slip into rough play, for philosophy wouldnt be a game at all. If its about trying to dig deeper into important but difficult questions, then theres no need to own an opinion and stick by it. Instead, we should happily relinquish a view when we find that the weight of argument takes us elsewhere, and we should not feel ashamed at that. If more of us could have that attitudesomething that unfortunately modern academic practices pushes againstthat would reduce the emphasis on individual competition and individual accomplishment.

She visited the Alberta Carbon Conversion Technology Centre, which demonstrates various carbon capture and utilization initiatives in the province.

While cold weather dominated Thursdays news conference, a little heat has been sparked in recent days by the federal governments suggestion Alberta could provide its own incentives if it wants to see carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) projects move ahead in the province.

In last weeks budget, Freeland unveiled details of a new federal investment tax credit for such developments.

Its seen as a pivotal step to kick-start projects that will help the countrys oil and gas sector get to net-zero by 2050, capturing carbon dioxide emissions and burying them underground or using them in various industrial processes.

You cant see the excitement on my face because its a little bit frozen, so let me try hard to really smile . . . I really feel we are at the beginning of a new chapter for Alberta and Canada, Freeland said.

The federal government has come to the table. We have put together a powerful tax credit.

Under the federal plan, companies can receive a 50 per cent tax credit for investing in equipment to capture CO2 in such projects, and a 37.5 per cent credit for spending on equipment used for transportation and storage on CCUS.

But the budget also made a point of noting it will talk with relevant provinces in the expectation that they will further strengthen financial incentives to accelerate the adoption of CCUS technologies by industry.

I really see this as a conversation, as a collaborative approach, Freeland said diplomatically.

One specific action that, from our perspective, the province could take that would be helpful would be to make provincial support stackable with federal support.

That means companies contemplating a big-budget CCUS investment could tap the federal incentive, along with existing provincial credits, programs or initiatives adopted by Alberta.

In some ways, its a tacit acknowledgment that what Ottawa brought out might not be enough to get some developments across the finish line.

This puts Premier Jason Kenney and his government in a tight spot.

The province has been a major cheerleader seeking federal incentives for CCUS to help the energy sector decarbonize.

Last year, Kenney asked for $30 billion in federal assistance from the Liberal government over a 10-year period or $3 billion a year for carbon capture projects in Alberta.

It was, he said, a no brainer.

Instead, the price tag for the federal investment tax credit will slowly grow to a projected $1.5 billion annually, hitting that level in 2027.

Thats half of what Alberta was seeking.

Now, its the federal governments turn to put some heat on the province.

Asked Wednesday about the issue, Kenney noted the province has directly put $1.8 billion into carbon capture technology dating back more than a decade.

And theres potentially more aid already on the table.

We will be making a very important fiscal commitment on top of the federal tax credit by providing for an offset in royalties payable by the oilsands companies for their capital costs associated with CCUS, Kenney told reporters.

If they put billions of dollars into . . . CCUS, that would be discounted from their royalty payments to the Alberta government in future years.

Kenney is apparently referring to the existing royalty system in place for oilsands projects.

To account for large initial investments, oilsands projects pay lower royalty rates until they hit payout the period when total project revenues exceed total capital and operating costs at which point the rate increases sharply.

Spending large amounts of money on CCUS means associated oilsands projects would pay the lower royalty rate for longer, according to provincial officials.

Chris Severson-Baker of the Pembina Institute, which has supported the federal tax credit, called the lower royalty rate a huge benefit for oilsands producers pursuing carbon capture.

The province isnt putting all of its cards on the table, but doesnt seem particularly anxious to ante up more money.

Everyone is positioning. So its a poker game, said one oilpatch executive.

The poker game isnt around the fact Kenney and the feds arent going to pay they are definitely going to pay. Its a matter of the dollars that everybody is asking for.

All of this positioning is being spurred by the federal commitment that Canada reduces its emissions by up to 45 per cent by 2030. Carbon capture and storage is a proven technology, but it requires a huge upfront investment.

Both levels of government want to see a number of projects move ahead. Industry wants to reduce emissions and produce low-carbon oil well into the future. A group of six major oilsands companies has already committed to reaching net-zero by 2050.

We are in an intense competition for global investment capital for CCUS projects with countries such as Norway, the Netherlands and the United States, who all invest generously with industry in CCUS technology, Kendall Dilling, interim director of Oil Sands Pathway to Net Zero Alliance, said Thursday.

Shell Canada president Susannah Pierce, who attended the finance ministers tour, said the federal measure will help remove uncertainty as the company considers a CCUS project.

At the end of the day, investors do have a choice, Pierce said. And if Alberta and the federal government come together and they work to develop a package to drive investment here, thats what we want to see.
