The perception that poker is gambling needs to change: Poker Sports League CEO – Business Today

Posted: May 6, 2022 at 12:46 am

Dabur India Chairman Amit Burmans Poker Sports League (PSL)one of the biggest poker tournaments in terms of prize pool and participationwants to build awareness about poker in India which has roughly around 30-40,000 professional poker players. PSL, which recently concluded its fourth season, is banking on its next season to break even.

Season 5 is where were going to break even and season 6 (roughly in FY23) is when were hoping to start making a profit. We want to take PSL international and replicate this model in London, UK and Vietnam, said Pranav Bagai, CEO and co-founder, Poker Sports League. Bagai said that the company earned Rs 8 crore in revenue during the first two seasons while Rs 10 crore has already been invested in the league so far.

His foray into the poker industry began with The Shark in 2008 and since then has created multiple poker related IPs, published Indias first poker magazine (Card Player India) and provided consultancy to Indias top online poker operators.

PSLs parent company, Mind Sports League (MSL) is valued at close to Rs 40 crore. Bagai said that his main goal is to make people aware of poker as a mind sport instead of gambling.

MSL has three verticals. Our main goal is making poker accessible to all. How do we do that? One is the offline part which is PSL. The second vertical is Hashtag Poker which is our soon-to-be-launched video app which is based on non-real money gaming, he said. MSLs third vertical, Bagai said, is a streaming vertical thats going up on Voot. We want to move beyond streaming content on Voot and pitch to everybody. Were working on two reality shows and one fiction show, he added.

As far as the regulation is concerned, Section 12 of the Public Gambling Act, 1867 says that games of mere skill are exempt from the application of the Act. A game of skill, according to various High Courts, is one in which the element of skill dominates the element of chance. International Mind Sports Association (IMSA), which is an association of the world governing bodies for games like contract bridge, chess, draughts, go, xiangqi, and mahjong, recognises poker as a mind sport.

Poker experts and industry veterans have called for clarity on regulation so that the game can be given the status of a real industry.

Were launching the video app Hashtag Poker to make people aware that its a game of skill. Thats why theres no real money involved. We dont want people to be irresponsible and do what other RMG (real money gaming) players are doing. Were developing their entire user journey from being exposed to the game to learning it and playing it responsibly, Bagai said.

If poker winners are being charged 30 per cent TDS on their winning, he asks, then why cant it be recognised as a real sport?

Plus, there are so many ways to create jobs in the field of tech, streaming, etc. Its only going to grow. Depending on their stakes, professionals can earn anywhere between Rs 20 lakhs to a crore a year, he said.

Poker cheating scandal: XXXX – DraftKings Nation

Posted: April 29, 2022 at 3:37 pm

If you havent been watching poker since it left ESPN, get a mug because the tea has been served piping hot in the last two weeks. Well do our best to sort through it all here.

The outing of cheaters has been a big topic in the poker community over the last couple weeks as many players that were banned from the online site GGPoker were outed. That included some of the biggest names such as Ali Imsirovic who just won two high roller tournaments at the Aria in Las Vegas last week. He was accused by fellow pro Alex Foxen of multiple instances of cheating both online and in live tournaments.

That led to a few tweets from a player named Martin Zamani, who was part of the stable of Bryn Kenney, the No. 1 all-time winner in poker tournament history with over $57 million in career earnings.

Zamani went on the Doug Polk podcast to discuss his allegations in more detail, while taking countless rips from a vape pen and offering to eat an entire bag of mushrooms. Its an interview that needs to be seen to be believed, and well get to the part about frog poison and eye acid later.

If youre less poker-inclined, a stable is just what it sounds like: Upcoming players compete with someone else putting the money up, and the profits are split to help spread out the risk and inevitable variance that comes with both cash games and tournaments. Players backed by the same person or syndicate are considered part of the same stable.

What is being alleged is that Kenneys players on GG Poker, for which he acted as an agent and received a portion of the rake players pay to enter a tournament, violated the terms of service in multiple ways that are also highly unethical. Players in the stable shared their hole cards with each other while playing in the same high-stakes tournaments. Recruited soft players (whales or VIPs that are wealthy outside of poker, but not great players) were colluded against and cheated because the stable was working together instead of independently during hands.

And then when stable players would get deep in a tournament, a more experienced and better player would take control of the account and finish the event, often using real time assistance software that is not allowed.

Real time assistance, or RTA for short, makes online poker basically impossible to defeat because the perfect mathematical decision is given to a player while theyre in a hand. Its the equivalent of having a chess computer sitting next to you while you play, except in chess the computer always wins.

Because poker is still gambling and the turn of a card can change everything, the computer wont win every time. But it will win more than it loses as while poker is a game of imperfect information (you probably know the range of your opponents hole cards, but you dont know exactly what they are holding), eventually the machine defeats the man over any kind of large sample size.

One of those VIP players is Lauren Roberts, who was close to Kenney personally but now has levied allegations against him as well.

If the allegations are true, and theres been very little pushback from anyone so far, it seems that if youre playing high stakes poker online theres a very good chance youre competing against computers as much as people.

Kenney chose to defend himself via a live interview with his friend Sarah Herring at PokerNews, but his response seems to have been rejected almost out of hand by most fans and players as disingenuous. Herring wasnt exactly Mike Wallace in his 60 Minutes prime with her questions, and she admitted before starting that was unlikely to happen.

It wasnt the best time for Kenney to try and run a bluff, though poker theory says thats what you should do when youre at the bottom of your range. But hes been called down by basically everyone, and its unlikely we see Kenney, a former major piece of the rise of GGPoker, as the face of anything in the game anytime soon.

A pretty good summary of how most poker players feel about the entire mess, as well as high stakes cheating in general, is here via the Solve For Why daily podcast. S4Y provides poker training as well as some coverage of the industry in general, and their new podcast format has greatly benefitted from all of this controversy hitting the game at the same time.

Yes, now well get to the frog poison and eye acid.

Besides advocating for things like Yoga and veganism to his stable, Zamani claims Kenney instructed him to visit a shaman, who then asked him to have frog poison poured in his arm in a ritual known as Kambo. When Zamani refused, she compromised that he could have acid poured in his eyes instead.

If an hour of a stoner prattling on about TeamViewer and VPNs and how much he hated his roommates is too much, we get it. But dont miss this clip from the interview where Zamani discusses his interaction with the shaman. Its so much more entertaining than Chris Moneymaker bluffing Sammy Farha in 2003.

Kenney acknowledged some of it being true in his PokerNews interview here, and it seems as if Zamani has no reason to lie. So yes, its possible No. 1 all-time earner in tournament poker looks more like an aspiring cult leader than a financial backer.

And much like the next hand, the next piece of poker gossip or scandal is usually just moments away. So grab some chips and a chair, we might be here for awhile.

Is 888poker’s Dave Gibson the Most Relatable Poker Player There Is? – PokerNews.com

Posted: at 3:37 pm

Dave Gibson is not on a mission to make the microstakes sexy. Far from it.

I want my stream to be organic, the 888poker Stream Team member told PokerNews. I dont want people to be watching just because Ive got a giveaway and suddenly my viewers jump up.

Gibson says that he's probably one of very few sponsored streamers who play the microstakes, and says he loves that side of his job, as well as trying to improve his poker in general. Why? Because he wants people coming back!"

Im never going to pretend I'm anything other than just the most relatable poker player there is. There's nothing special about me! Im just like everyone else in the chat in terms of playing.

Except Gibson has a massive 888poker badge on his chest and has jumped to prominence in the streaming world after winning the Chris Eubank KO Challenge at 888poker LIVE London earlier in 2022.

But online, Gibson remains true to his roots and relishes the interactions he has with the community he has built up over the course of his streaming career.

What I do is really relatable. People can see me playing microstakes and jump in the same tournament as Im playing. The viewers really enjoy that sort of thing, that sort of interaction. I see people in the chat joining tournaments Im playing.

Gibson first got into poker by accident he says. After a game store didnt have a copy of the game he wanted to buy, he stumbled across a poker game purely by chance and bought it.

Best Free to Play Slots

I didnt even look what the games were, but I ended up buying it. And one of the games was Texas Holdem Poker.

It was a proper butterfly effect. If the game I had wanted was there, I wouldnt have looked around and I wouldnt have found it. Its a pretty great origin story.

So I started playing on that and found it fun. And just by playing on there I learned to play, just figuring it out as I went along.

Follow Dave's Stream on Twitch!

The next stop for Gibson, like many aspiring poker players, was YouTube and Twitch to devour hour upon hour of poker content from some of the biggest streamers around.

Gibson recognised similarities between him and the streamers he watched. He saw his own sense of humour in them, and that made him believe he could do what they do.

Over time, his interactions with the streaming community helped him gain confidence and start his own streaming journey, one that took off like a rocket.

I got a lot more support than I expected, he said. I probably wouldnt have got that support if Id have done it six months earlier because being around everyone had prepared me.

It was quite a turnaround in a short space of time. Thats the reason why the support is so big now. I still cant tell you why I have so much support when I play!

Now with the title of Stream Team member resting on his shoulders, Gibson says that he still harbors ambitions of playing higher while staying true to the microstakes roots that put him on the map and that his community continue to enjoy.

Its difficult as a streamer sometimes. Some of the tournaments I play, the amount that I'm gonna win here is just not significant enough that I'm not sure people will really care.

I try and keep people engrossed in the stream. Being interactive. A lot of people in chat I know reasonably well because theyve been around a while.

Twitch is a numbers game. In how much poker streamers win, in how many viewers they have and how big their community grows. Gibson says its easy just to focus on these metrics but likes to focus on how he can improve his community as a whole.

Twitch its quite easy just to judge yourself primarily on how many viewers you get watching the stream. But thats kind of what I end up doing. I want it to be organic. I always try and get more people watching for whatever reason.

George Epstein, 95; he was a winner at poker, and at life – Larchmont Chronicle

Posted: at 3:37 pm

I met George Epstein in 2013 when he was teaching his favorite game to a crowded room of poker players at the Claude Pepper Senior Center.

He also taught engineering courses at UCLA and for NASA, and he developed military defense systems for the Air Force, Navy and Army.

But on this day his poker skills were in play.

His gig at the center started after he was invited to give a talk on the merits of the game at the center on La Cienega Boulevard in 2005.

I had no idea it was going to work out like this. Its just incredible, the then 86-year-old area resident said of his classes, which had grown to 250 members.

GEORGE EPSTEIN, left, in 2013 at the Claude Pepper Senior Center, with assistants Pat Box and Shirley Tye.

Hes the pioneer behind all of this, center recreation facility director Gregory Glenn said at the time.

Epstein died March 29 after battling a heart condition at the age of 95.

In his final years, George The Engineer Epsteins Poker for All column was a regular feature on the back page of the Larchmont Chronicle.

And, at City Hall on April 5, the Los Angeles City Council adjourned in his honor.

In the city of Angels, George certainly earned his wings, here on Earth and beyond, said Councilman Paul Koretz, Fifth District.

George was a loving, kind and absolutely brilliant man who cared so much about his family and the city that he lived in. George read a stack of newspapers every morning and regularly submitted letters to the editor to local publications

The Chronicle was among those that received his regular letters, whose subjects ranged from potholes on local streets to city politics.

Approximately 100 people attended his funeral April 1 at Hillside Memorial Park, according to his daughter, Sue Epstein. Her father was a caring family man, a pioneer in the aerospace industry and an enthusiastic poker player, but most of all, she stressed, he was a humanitarian and a thinker. He was always thinking of ways to help people, to make the world better, she said.

Studies have shown activity keeps you young, he told me back in 2013. It keeps the brains synapses firing. He refrained from playing with his poker students, instead travelling to area casinos where, he told me, he tested his luck at Texas holdem until 2 a.m.

I couldnt leave. I was winning, he smiled.

He started playing cards as a child when he helped his dad deliver laundry in a Boston suburb. He attended Boston Latin School (established in 1635, making it the oldest existing school in the country), the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During World War II, stationed in Virginia on a destroyer, he played cards to pass the time. As head of radar, he became a hero on the ship after he found the cause of recurrent failures.

His expertise would follow him throughout his career as an aerospace engineer. He specialized in adhesives and composites materials and structures used in rockets and spacecraft. He worked for North American Aviation, Aero-Jet General, Ford Aerospace and the Aerospace Corporation, from which he retired in 1991; he remained active as a consultant in the industry. He also worked closely with the Society for the Advancement of Materials and Process Engineering North America. In a statement, SAMPE North America CEO Zane Clark called Epstein a giant in the composites industry.

The story of SAMPE would not have been written without Mr. Epstein and cannot be told without sharing his legacy.

After retirement, his second career flourished. He wrote his first book, Poker for Winners, and, following some wrangling at the city, started teaching. Some people think its gambling, he explained.

He left little to chance, taking notes and sizing up his opponents body language. It gives you an edge, he explained. He won 70 percent of the time. Starting cards are key, as is the games algorithm; he even wrote a book about it. His third book was on the art of the bluff.

After the death of his wife of 45 years, Irene, in 1996, SAMPE started a scholarship program in her honor at Fairfax High School. The scholarships were expanded to include the Girls Academic Leadership Academy (GALA) on the Los Angeles High School campus.

Poker players still play at the Claude Pepper Senior Center on Fridays at 1 p.m., and until recently, Epstein was a regular.

Five Reasons Why WPT Global Isn’t Like Other Real Money Poker Sites – PokerNews.com

Posted: at 3:37 pm

If you haven't yet checked out WPT Global yet then you really should!

Not only is the site available in over 85 countries but WPT Global has a huge focus on player security and safety, meaning you can be assured of an amazing player experience.

Here are five reasons why WPT Global isn't like other real money poker sites.

One of the most exciting aspects of WPT Global is the integration of Gamavrs. These are NFTs that offer in-game benefits on WPT Global such as freeroll tournaments, exclusive tables and access to WPT Live Events

Check out the benefits below:

For more information, head to the Gamavrs website to join their discord and learn more about the project and their collaboration with the WPT.

Best Free to Play Slots

Another unique aspect of the WPT Global player experience is the unique player matching. WPT Global officials say that within 300-500 hands, their AI Player Matching system can determine within 98.5% certainty what type of player you are.

They then use this to skill-match players and seat them with their peers. This enables them to build the ecosystem in a positive way, and makes player assistance redundant.

If you head to the Cash Games section of the WPT Global client you will see a whole host of different cash games at different stakes:

Not only that, but you can find cash games with compulsory straddles, meaning that every orbit as well as the small and big blind going out, a third bet usually equal to double the big blind is also placed.

This increases the amount of money in the pot pre-flop and can usually create even more action.

No Deposit Necessary! Get YOUR Free Ticket to WPT Global's $100,000 GTD Welcome Event

WPT Global has said that in the future satellites to WPT live events will be fully integrated into the client.

This means that players can access live events on the World Poker Tour for less, and will be able to win tickets for WPT tournaments around the world.

Although not yet released, WPT Global has promised an exciting Loyalty System that will benefit all of its players.

It is set to be a competition-based rewards system, that encourages fairness, entertainment, and long-term sustainability. A wholly reimagined points system will enable players to get rewarded while playing on WPT Global.

Discover What Data PokerStars Tracks About YOU to Keep Their Games Safe – PokerNews.com

Last week, PokerStars published a blog from its current Head of Game Integrity, Francis Lincoln, that shone a rare light on the department and the steps it takes to ensure that PokerStars continues to offer players the safest place to play online poker.

They say themselves that they know some players will try to cheat, but its team of around 50 experts, programmers, analysts and ex-pro poker players help to keep the games fair for everyone.

What is Ghosting? Multi-Accounting? Collusion? Online Poker Cheating Explained

Over the past 20 years, PokerStars has been developing and improving the tools and capabilities to detect cheaters. They do this in order to give their players confidence that they are well protected and playing on a safe site.

In order to do this, PokerStars gathers a variety of information about its players to effectively detect collusion, multi-accounting and bot-usage. They can be broke down into the four following types:

PokerStars also says that they have other ways to monitor your system, but they do not make these public as they "would only aid those seeking to evade [...] detection."

A hot topic in poker at the moment is Real Time Assistance (RTA), so what is PokerStars currently doing to combat this threat?

The use of RTA is defined by PokerStars as a form of bot use, and is strictly prohibited. Due to the rise in prominence of such tools, PokerStars developed its own platform to measure a player's level and accuracy of play, based on their own models.

They then use this to identify players who may be using RTA and conduct detailed reviews into their play if necessary.

This system has been in use for several years, and is used alongside and as an enhancement to other bot detection methods.

Finally, where PokerStars confirms that Terms of Service violatiosn have occured, other players who have been victims of cheats are properly reimbursed.

Another thing that is mentioned in the blog, is that PokerStars are unable to see what is on your screen.

"We do not, and never have, had any means to capture what is on your screen. To do so would be a serious breach of privacy, and we recognise that we must balance invasive detection with what is both morally and legally permissible."

They also go on to state that funds are never confiscated lightly. Instead, any confiscation must hold up to "the standard of both the applicable regulator and local laws," the requirements of which PokerStars says is strict.

In short, PokerStars say they never take player funds unjustifiably.

In addition to ensuring the games are safe and fair, PokerStars' states in the article that its goal is to catch cheaters as quickly as possible and deter them from returning.

With the wealth of data, tools and experience PokerStars has with catching cheaters on its site, it's a matter of when not if any cheaters are caught.

Poker Pro Tom Dwan Winning A 3-Way Hand For Nearly A Million In Cash Is So Sick – BroBible

Posted: April 20, 2022 at 10:12 am

Tom Dwan has built an incredibly successful career as a professional poker player. Hes reportedly earned nearly $780K in WSOP money, over $500K in World Poker Tour cash, but hes really raked it in with $4,489,505 in casino tourney winnings.

If you came to love the sport of Poker by watching ESPNs WSOP coverage then Tom Dwan aka durrrr might not be a name that rings a bell but hes been around the game for decades and has been featured on multiple seasons of NBCs Poker After Dark and on PokerGos High Stakes Poker. Here we get to see him rake in a pot worth nearly a million dollars in cash.

Im not accustomed to seeing a million dollars in cash change hands. Thats part of what makes this hand so special. Another aspect that sets his hand apart is how they actually run it three times. That means each player keeps their name starting (or hole) cards but they run the five cards on the board three times giving each player three chances to win. I dont want to spoil how each hand plays out so lets just watch it, shall we?

The other poker players in that hand have seen immense success. Jean-Robert Bellande has won 1 WSOP bracelet, made 4 final tables, and earned $2.1 million in WSOP tourneys in addition to the $2.97 million in casino tournaments hes won. And I cant find much on Lynne Jis career earnings aside from lots of listings as pro player. But my point is this is PokerGos High Stakes Poker and not an easy cash game.

While were here I thought we should also watch this clip of Daniel Negreanu vs Garrett Adelstein. This is also from High Stakes Poker and it features a master at work.

As Im sure youre well aware, Daniel is one of the most accomplished poker players in history. Hes one of the most observant human beings Ive ever encountered. Garrett Adelstein mustve spotted something in this situation to push all of that money in the middle so lets check out the hand:

Id be interested to hear some feedback from any pros out there reading this on what Daniel shouldve done differently from the onset or if he played it correctly. Was straight calling the 4th bet with pocket 10s the correct play? Should he have shown more aggression out of the gate? You could run this hand many times and it wont end with one of the players going all-in so what should Garrett have done to signal more strength out and convince Daniel of his bluff? Let us know in the Facebook comments or on Twitter at @casspa or @brobible!
