Scot strikes it lucky with big poker win – Northumberland Gazette

Posted: May 17, 2022 at 6:59 pm

Scot Turner, from Bedlington, won 70,500 on a national poker game at Grosvenor Casino Newcastle.

The 29-year-old, who has enjoyed some success on the local pub poker circuit, had his biggest win yet at the venue on St James Boulevard and plans to celebrate with his family by generously paying off his parents mortgage.

After hitting four queens, Scot was beaten by an even stronger hand when Rob Whitehouse, a 59-year-old plasterer from Tyneside, landed a Straight Flush.

Scot was shocked but his disappointment did not last long as the pair each took home a share of the overall 106,000 national pot.

Scot, said: Ive been playing poker for a long time, even teaching it at my local pub The White House in Ashington.

"When I saw that Id lost to a straight flush I couldnt believe it, I was sure that my four queens were going to come out on top.

"Much like the game of poker, the night was full of surprises!

After the initial celebration I reached out to my family to tell them the news and that I had decided to use the winnings to pay off the rest of my parents mortgage.

"I feel so proud to be able to give back to them after everything they have done for me.

Rob, who won over 35,000, said: I am making plans to retire in a few years, so this win certainly helped me in moving that process along.

"I will be using some of the money as a gift to kids and grandkids as well as going on holiday.

The National Bad Beat Jackpot is a nationwide promotion from Grosvenor Casinos.

Wayne Sheekey, general manager at Grosvenor Casino Newcastle, said: We were thrilled that the National Bad Beat Jackpot was hit in our casino, and we were able to give two local winners a night they will always remember.

"The team here enjoyed celebrating with them both and wish them more of the same in the future!

Sex toy, poker and jive dancing seminars offered to civil servants working from home… – The Sun

Posted: at 6:59 pm

CIVIL servants working from home are being offered feel-good seminars on jive dancing, poker and sex toys.

Hundreds of staff at the Department for Work and Pensions have been invited to motivational workshops while paid by the taxpayer.

1

With 73 per cent of DWP employees still working from home, they can access the sessions remotely.

They can take a 45-minute course titled The History Of Sex Toys, which is described as a titillating time-warp through Ancient Greece via the Victorians, female emancipation, the HIV/AIDS crisis, up to modern day.

Other sessions for up to 500 workers at two DWP Jobcentres in Bournemouth include make-up for men, poker, jive and salsa dancing, Korean 101 and home brewing.

Staff were told to take as many sessions as you like as long as it did not affect appointments.

The courses fly in the face of the PMs plea for staff to get back to the office.

Jacob Rees-Mogg, minister for government efficiency, said: Hard-pressed taxpayers shouldnt be having to pay for this time wasting.

Tory MP Nigel Mills added: It is inappropriate content for a work environment.

After The Sun got in touch, the DWP said the sessions were not approved by management and would be axed.

Gas poker game between Russia and Europe – The Daily Star

Posted: at 6:59 pm

The drop in Russian gas flows to the European Union has had no major effect on supplies, but it raises pressure on the region to wean itself from Moscow's energy.

Here is a look at the issue: The EU relies heavily on Russian gas, raising concerns that Moscow could use its export to blackmail the 27-nation bloc.

Last year, the EU received around 155 billion cubic metres of Russian gas, accounting for 45 per cent of its imports of the fossil fuel.

While the EU is discussing an embargo on Russian oil, a gas ban is less likely for now as some countries such as Germany, the EU's economic engine, are heavily reliant on the energy source.

"Of course, the Europeans have been quite bad in this poker game -- they showed too openly how scared they were to lose the Russian gas that now, Russia is gaining the upper hand," said Ipek Ozkardeskaya, analyst at Swissquote Bank.

Ukraine has pleaded with the EU to ban Russian gas, pointing out that it gives Moscow the financial means to press on with its war against its neighbour.

In the first two months following the February 24 invasion, Russia has raked in 63 billion euros ($65.5 billion) in gas exports, including 44 billion euros from the EU, according to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air.

Russian gas flows via Ukraine fell this week.

Ukraine's pipeline operator GTSOU said it halted gas transport at the Sokhranivka transit point from Wednesday as Russian occupying forces now in control were interfering with operations.

Ukraine urged Russian energy firm Gazprom to increase supplies via another site, Sudzha, but the company said it was impossible to reroute all the supplies through there.

"Roughly one third of Russia's total Ukrainian transit flows through the Sokhranivka entry point, while the rest (two thirds) passes through the Sudzha station," said Ole Hvalbye, commodities analyst at SEB bank.

The loss amounts to two percent of Europe's Russian gas consumption, according to Hvalbye.

"This does not scream crisis, but it is a wake-up call for what is to come," he said.

Gazprom also announced on Thursday that it would stop sending natural gas via the Polish section of the Yamal-Europe gas pipeline after Moscow imposed retaliatory sanctions against Western energy companies.

The pipeline can carry up to 33 billion cubic meters of gas from fields in Russia's Yamal peninsula and western Siberia through Belarus and Poland to Germany.

But a market source said the impact is limited as the pipeline had already been carrying low volumes for months.

The move will make "no difference" as long as long-term contracts for Russian gas via other pipelines are fulfilled.

Some analysts suggest that Ukraine has deliberately disrupted Russian gas flows to Europe in frustration over the EU's reluctance to impose an embargo on Russia's energy exports.

Carsten Fritsch, analyst at Commerzbank, said it was "possible" that Ukraine, which relies heavily on Russian oil, is pressuring Hungary to drop its opposition to an EU crude embargo.

While the EU has balked at a gas ban, there are fears that Russia could turn off the taps in retaliation at Western sanctions over the war.

Kaushal Ramesh, senior analyst at the research firm Rystad Energy, said "supplies could be stopped unilaterally by Gazprom".

"The chances of this happening are slim, but not zero," Ramesh said.

EU buyers are "not caught completely off guard" as storage levels are currently sufficient to last through "most of 2022, even if Russian flows were to stop instantly".

But, he added, "the outlook for winter 2022 supply is now a lot more pessimistic".

The EU has set a goal of cutting Russian gas imports by two thirds this year.

Germany says it can make up for the recent drop in Russian deliveries by getting gas from Norway and the Netherlands to stock up before winter.

Europeans are also counting on liquefied natural gas (LNG), which can be shipped by boat from other countries such as Qatar and the United States.

Denmark is looking into possibly raising its own natural gas production in its North Sea fields, while Romania is eyeing legislation to encourage gas extraction in the Black Sea.

Experts say the situation is another argument in favour of speeding up the transition away from fossil fuels.

"The rollout of clean energy solutions alone can lead to a reduction of 101 bcm (101 billion cubic metres of gas), which is equivalent to two thirds of Russian imports, already by 2025," according to the E3G climate think tank.

The European Biogas Association is also ready to step in, saying it could nearly double its production to 35 billion cubic meters by 2030, equivalent to 20 per cent of Russian gas imports.

Books to read: ‘The Mental Game of Poker’ for sports betting – Yahoo Sports

Posted: May 9, 2022 at 8:48 pm

Before I came into the sports betting world, I lived, breathed and ate poker. For years, I both played and dealt while working in poker media living in Las Vegas. Nearly everyone in my life was in poker. I woke up thinking about poker and went to bed thinking about poker.

I often reference how the game has shaped the way I live and how the things I learned playing no-limit hold'em have crossed over into what I do now in sports betting. I never just played; I prepped by reviewing hands with other players, studied with a coach and read books that were beneficial about both the math behind the game and the mindset.

Some of these books have stood the test of time, but not all of them focused on poker. Some were written on sports psychology, others about finance, but all have helped with my current role as an analyst. Its all related golf, finance, sports, trading, gaming, etc. because its all about the psychology of doing the act in which you train for.

Id like to share some of those books with you and perhaps they can be just as useful in your life taking concepts learned and applying them to real-world situations.

I'm starting first with "The Mental Game of Poker,"written by Jared Tendler. Tendler is a mental game coach that has worked with PGA and LPGA players, high-stakes poker players, along with other professionals. First of all, the cover alone speaks volumes for how it could be used for other aspects of life with words like "entitlement," "motivation" and "confidence" slapped right there to grab your attention. Here are some concepts I found beneficial that have helped with sports betting.

Can specific books help you become a smarter sports bettor? (Fethi Belaid/AFP via Getty Images)

Theres a sentence written in the book when Tendler talks about the Adult Learning Model, which is about the learning process. What really grabbed my attention was, you can only work on parts of your game at one time.

Hes so right. When you are either new to sports betting or even an experienced bettor, you could easily get overwhelmed with trying to do it all. Instead, focus on one sport at a time. You see content creators and accounts on Gambling Twitter that talk about MLB, NBA, USFL, KBO, horse racing, WTA, PGA, props, and whatever other sport is on that day. Theyre likely not winning. Unless you are using a model, heck even if you are, its just entirely too much information to consume.

Story continues

If youre starting out, focus on one sport that you know absolutely the most about, the one that you can crush at bar trivia. Then get really good at analyzing that sport.

Even if youre a seasoned bettor, then you know which sports and which wager types you excel in. Narrow down your focus to less than a handful of sports. For me, its football, ATP tennis, and PGA. At least for me, the more I try to add, my brain gets really foggy. Its like any skill, you can be good at a lot of things or you can put your effort in a few and become great.

How I use this concept outside of betting: same rule applies. Life can be a full bag. People have medical things, family things, work things, and it can just all fill up too quickly. Focus on one thing at a time. Have a list, mark each thing one by one. It will help spread out the burden.

Theres an entire chapter on tilt. If youve played poker, you know tilt well. If you ordered food to go, got home to see they gave you regular fries instead of curly fries, then you know tilt. What this chapter helped with was recognizing that there are different types of tilt. In fact, Tendler shares seven of them. The one I identify with most is, hate-losing tilt. Im a competitor at heart so like Tendler says, even if we know that variance can impact results, we still hate losing. Fine if we lose, but how we handle the inevitable losses is what matters most.

What this section helped me to understand is, aside from money, why winning is so important to me and then how to mentally navigate the variance. As it states, dont let variance beat you by forcing you to play badly, or in this case, bet incorrectly. What I mean by that is by forcing action, doubling down, or making a wager after a loss you wouldnt have otherwise.

Honestly, there are so many great quotes to be used in this section. If you lost making profitable plays, losing is temporary as long as you keep playing well and improving. The same applies to stocks, playing golf, really anything and everything. Make correct decisions, then eventually the variance will swing back to your favor.

Oh, but you thought tilt only existed when losing? Tendler explains that there is also winners tilt. You go on a hot streak, suddenly you feel invisible, you gain that I cant lose mindset and then find yourself making mistakes, betting too many games, adding more parlays and incorrectly raising your bet sizing. Overconfidence is a thing too and with a boosted ego, mistakes can be made.

Losses are inevitable. The key is to trust the process (clich but true). Its not just confidence in betting, its having confidence in yourself in everyday situations whether at the gym, creating content or your city-wide softball league. Confidence runs through what we do in our day-to-day lives. For this, I reached out to the author himself. On the subject matter, Tendler said, the bottom line is that it's far too easy to have confidence be equal to results. Results are strong, confidence is high. Results are poor, confidence is low. That's the most common mistake I see.

One thing I preach is keeping track of every wager you make. Its one thing to know what your ROI (return on investment) is but its another to analyze why your wins were wins and why your losses were losses. Tendler explains, As a sports bettor, the luck factor in the short-term means that you're going to get a lot of false feedback. Great bets can lose and bad bets can win. The key to break out of this cycle is to clearly understand how you define quality bets and quality decision-making. Then you base your confidence on your performance, not the results. Do that, and your confidence in general will never get too high or too low.

So much this! Its about the quality of actions. Ive been in a slump as of late so I asked Tendler how I can get my groove back. His response was that it all starts with asking yourself, Did you like the bets when you made them? How strong was your mentality at that time?

I know I needed a betting break because at least one of these was a no, but if your response is an emphatic yes, with no doubts and strong mentality for all five, then chalk it up to bad luck," Tendler said. "Your confidence doesn't deserve to take a hit and you should keep firing. Streaks like this are part of the game and you don't want losses like this to change your decision-making process. You do want to throw good money chasing after bad money.

Love that final part. It reminds me of something Tom Dwan once said, You cant win if you fold.

Other concepts in the book that could be directly applied to sports betting: not trusting your gut, second-guessing, burnout, the absence of learning and the illusion of control.

Ive read this book multiple times over the last decade, including recently last month, and Ill likely read it again in the future. There are concepts that we know but it helps to be reminded or helps to expand further for a deeper understanding. If you want to improve your tilt, grow your confidence, increase your motivation and cope with variance, this is definitely one book I recommend. Theres a reason why its part of my video backdrop.

Lakerveld Wins the 2022 Malta Poker Festival Spring Grand Event – PokerNews.com

Posted: at 12:46 am

After seven days of scintillating action at the beautiful Portomaso Casino, the 2022 Spring Malta Poker Festival Spring Grand Event winner has been crowned. The Dutch professional poker player and respected poker coach Daniel Lakerveld triumphed in the crown jewel of the MPF for 71,000.

It took over ten hours for play to conclude when Lakerveld defeated Hungarian Simon Gyrgy heads-up to outlast 1,014 players, which generated a prize pool of 486,720. Lakerveld and Gyrgy both held trip fives in the last hand of the night but the Dutchman's ace outkicked Gyrgy's king.

PokerStars Live Pro Chris Da Silva dominated for the majority of the day but eventually finished third. Day 2 chip leader Pawel Zawadowicz made the final table as a short-stack eventually finishing in sixth place.

Only18 players returned to action on the final day split over three tables and there was not a long wait before the first bust-outs occurred. Veteran Italian Mario Musacchia was the first to depart when he ran into Simon Gyrgy's pocket jacks.

Documentary director and poker enthusiast Dominick French finished in 11th place in cruel circumstances as his flopped two pair was beaten by Da Silva's runner-runner flush. French took the beat graciously and jumped into one of the many side events that have been held at the MPF.

James Clarke finished in 10th place and bubbled the final table. The semi-permanent resident of Nottingham's Dusk Till Dawn tried a stop and go with two pair but ran into trips of Da Silva.

The final table consisted of a mixture of seasoned pros and recreational players. Da Silva was the chip leader going into the final table with a colossal 13,800,000 chips. The lowest stack was Gyrgy who spun his stack-up to finish second and record the first live cash of his career.

There were massive hands and coolers throughout the final table play. Da Silva took a minor hit when he attempted to bluff Gyrgy off a rivered royal flush. Lakerveld managed to crack Gyrgy's pocket aces by hitting quad nines. and Georgis Ninis was eliminated when Gyrgy hit a three-outer on the river to make two pair.

But it was Lakerveld who outlasted everyone and wins the Malta Poker Festival trophy, his name etched into the Unibet Deepstacks Championship Belt and 71,000. The next event to be held by MPF at Portomaso Casino will be in the fall of 2022.

Former Hellmuth Rival Eric Persson Talks His Way to Big Wins on New High Stakes Poker – PokerNews.com

Posted: at 12:46 am

As we learned in his recent contentious heads-up match against Phil Hellmuth, Eric Persson sure does love to talk and isn't a fan of sleeves. Both seemed to work in his favor during Monday's High Stakes Poker episode much like it did versus the "Poker Brat" last month.

Episode 11 of the ninth season, which is available on the PokerGO app, didn't present many big pots, but there were some entertaining hands and table talk worth mentioning.

The newest episode featured the same players from last week's show: Persson, Tom Dwan, Bryn Kenney, Patrik Antonius, Krish Menon, Garrett Adelstein, Phil Ivey, and DoorDash founder Stanley Tang.

Ivey, as has been the case during the current High Stakes Poker season, wasn't very active at the table. He'll return next week with the same lineup, and perhaps we'll get to see him mix it up a bit more.

Persson, locked in a heated battle, extended his middle finger to Hellmuth after winning a pot last month in the $25,000 buy-in PokerGO Tour Heads-Up Showdown. For those who weren't familiar with his style of play, that sort of goofiness was on display during his first couple of High Stakes Poker sessions, albeit far less vulgar.

Free to Play Slots in the US

In the first hand, with the blinds throughout the night at $500/$1,000, Dwan opened to $3,000 from early position with the . Tang called with the in middle position, as did late position players Menon, holding the and Persson's . Kenney, who was recently accused of running an online poker cheating scheme, also came along in the big blind with the .

The flop came out , which hit a couple of players, including Menon, who flopped top pair, but surprisingly folded to Dwan's $6,000 bet. Persson, sitting on trips, raised it to $16,000 and it scared everyone away except "durrrr," who had nothing but queen-high. He made the call and then hit a horrible card for him .

"I'm going to give you this to look at and I want you to blink twice if you think I should continue on."

Both players checked and then action picked up on the river. Dwan fired out a wager of $31,000 and then Persson busted out some speech play.

"31? Oh, I thought it was 36. If it was 36, I was going to fold," a posturing Persson joked.

"I'm going to give you this to look at and I want you to blink twice if you think I should continue on," Persson told Menon before handing him his cards to look at.

After a giggling Menon returned the two cards to Persson, the owner of Maverick Gaming casino brand, then announced an all-in bet of $164,000.

"I could have deuce-seven," he told Dwan, who was in a tough spot facing a large bet. "He didn't snap-call, Patrik (Antonius). It's a good sign."

Dwan eventually made the correct fold and surrendered the $243,500 pot. Persson later used speech play to his advantage on multiple occasions, including in a flopped king-high flush hand against the flopped set of Kenney.

Two wealthy investors Krish Menon and Stanley Tang played a wild pot that might leave some curious as to what one of the players was thinking on the river.

Menon raised to $3,000 from an early position with the and received calls behind him from Person's , Antonius's , and Kenney's . Tang then came along from the big blind with the .

The flop was and everyone checked before the showed up on the river. Tang again checked his set to Menon, who bet out $9,000 with his sixes.

Action folded to Tang, and he went for a big check-raise to $31,000. Menon wasn't a believer and made the loose call. The river was a meaningless , and this time the DoorDash founder went for an over-bet of $120,000.

You're probably thinking that was the end of the hand and Menon quickly folded with so many potential superior hands out there, but you'd be wrong.

"That smells fishy," Menon said before making one of the loosest calls of the entire season. He lost the $326,500 pot and saw his stack drop well below $400,000.

There are three remaining episodes of High Stakes Poker Season 9 on PokerGO.

Check out our past recaps from Season 9 of High Stakes Poker on PokerGO:

Episode 12 will air at 5 p.m. PT next Monday on PokerGO. Fans can watch every episode, past and present, on-demand by purchasing a PokerGO subscription. We'll get to see next week if Adelstein was being too hard on himself or if his play wasn't up to the quality his fans are accustomed to seeing.

The American Legion Riders Chapter 9 host the Boots on the Ground Poker Run and Concert Sat, May, 5 – WOKV

Posted: at 12:46 am

Jacksonville The American Legion Riders Chapter 9 will host the 9th Annual Boots on the Ground Poker Run and Concert in Jacksonvilles Flamingo Lake RV Resort on Saturday, May 7, from 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Over 1,000 motorcycles and 200 jeeps will parade along roads within the RV Park lined with over 3000 authentic - but used - combat boots - to honor Americas fallen veterans from Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom and first responders from 9/11.

According to Marc Pica, the events organizer, each boot contains a picture of a fallen military hero and /or first responder. This year, the Riders added 13 boots to represent the soldiers killed at the airport in Afghanistan. Although Pica admits, they have yet to collect enough boots to represent every fallen hero.

Pica describes the day as an emotional, humbling, and beautiful.

I am so proud to be a part of this event, he said. The day literally sits in my heart and brings tears to my eyes. Everyone - especially our volunteers - put their hearts and souls into celebrating our military by honoring its fallen.

Noted as the largest motorcycle event in Jacksonville, Julie Mixon-Bergeron launched the event in Fernandina Beach after her son, Kelly J. Mixon, an Army Specialist was KIA in Afghanistan in 2013. Determined to grow the event into a motorcycle poker run, she approached Pica and The American Legion Riders Chapter 9. Pica and his comrades were thrilled to accept the assignment.

We created the largest motorcycle poker run in the state of Florida, he said. The Boots on the Ground Poker Run and Concert is a two-day party that begins on Friday night with a kick off concert from The Remains.

Motorcycles rev up their engines at at 11 a.m. to coincide with a flyover from the Dreamland Squadron.

Well have the Side Project Band Pipe and Drum, the Paul Wayne Experience, Metal Mucil and the Duval County Line headlining our music lineup, continued Pica. Kick-off concert starts Friday night. And Saturday is an all day, kid-friendly event filled with vendors, food trucks and fun events including the states largest - 44 stop - poker run. Theres even a golf cart poker run.

Pica explained that the monies from sponsorships like Dicks Wings, donations, registration and vendor fees will be equally distributed to local veteran organizations that we can interact with those currently alive so we dont have to memorialize them later.

Although we take nothing away from memorializing them, he continued. In the words of Calvin Coolidge, A nation that forgets to defendants will soon itself be forgotten.

Monies will be equally distributed to K9s For Warriors, Veterans Village of Northeast Florida, K9 Line, Inc., Project Vet Relief, Mission 22, The Florida Fallen Hero Memorial Fund and Wreaths Across America.

Boots for the event come from yearly boot drives from local bases.

When military personnel get new combat boots, they bring us their old ones Pica said. As long as theyre in good condition as to not disrespect the fallen, we take them. The Boots are stored by Wayne Terry, a local veteran who owns Puro Clean, in a climate controlled warehouse as to maintain the rubber soles. Everyone who lends a hand is part of a really good thing.

Pica concluded by inviting everyone to come out and experience the event that will take you breath away.

The perception that poker is gambling needs to change: Poker Sports League CEO – Business Today

Posted: at 12:46 am

Dabur India Chairman Amit Burmans Poker Sports League (PSL)one of the biggest poker tournaments in terms of prize pool and participationwants to build awareness about poker in India which has roughly around 30-40,000 professional poker players. PSL, which recently concluded its fourth season, is banking on its next season to break even.

Season 5 is where were going to break even and season 6 (roughly in FY23) is when were hoping to start making a profit. We want to take PSL international and replicate this model in London, UK and Vietnam, said Pranav Bagai, CEO and co-founder, Poker Sports League. Bagai said that the company earned Rs 8 crore in revenue during the first two seasons while Rs 10 crore has already been invested in the league so far.

His foray into the poker industry began with The Shark in 2008 and since then has created multiple poker related IPs, published Indias first poker magazine (Card Player India) and provided consultancy to Indias top online poker operators.

PSLs parent company, Mind Sports League (MSL) is valued at close to Rs 40 crore. Bagai said that his main goal is to make people aware of poker as a mind sport instead of gambling.

MSL has three verticals. Our main goal is making poker accessible to all. How do we do that? One is the offline part which is PSL. The second vertical is Hashtag Poker which is our soon-to-be-launched video app which is based on non-real money gaming, he said. MSLs third vertical, Bagai said, is a streaming vertical thats going up on Voot. We want to move beyond streaming content on Voot and pitch to everybody. Were working on two reality shows and one fiction show, he added.

As far as the regulation is concerned, Section 12 of the Public Gambling Act, 1867 says that games of mere skill are exempt from the application of the Act. A game of skill, according to various High Courts, is one in which the element of skill dominates the element of chance. International Mind Sports Association (IMSA), which is an association of the world governing bodies for games like contract bridge, chess, draughts, go, xiangqi, and mahjong, recognises poker as a mind sport.

Poker experts and industry veterans have called for clarity on regulation so that the game can be given the status of a real industry.

Were launching the video app Hashtag Poker to make people aware that its a game of skill. Thats why theres no real money involved. We dont want people to be irresponsible and do what other RMG (real money gaming) players are doing. Were developing their entire user journey from being exposed to the game to learning it and playing it responsibly, Bagai said.

If poker winners are being charged 30 per cent TDS on their winning, he asks, then why cant it be recognised as a real sport?

Plus, there are so many ways to create jobs in the field of tech, streaming, etc. Its only going to grow. Depending on their stakes, professionals can earn anywhere between Rs 20 lakhs to a crore a year, he said.
