How to Play Online Poker (and How Its Different from Live Poker) – The Action Network
Posted: June 20, 2022 at 3:04 pm
Differences Between Live and Online Poker
Poker is one of the most popular card games in existence. Theonline pokerarena has become a premier destination for players looking to get in on the action. For decades, most players would get together with friends or head to their local casino, but this has all changed with the emergence of excellent online poker platforms.
Online poker is wildly different from live poker, a topic we will explore in this writing at length. While U.S. players are mostly restricted from playing via the Internet, there are still a few states that allow US-based platforms to offer their services. A large portion of the current online poker scene comes from offshore cardrooms that are legal to use, but are typically frowned upon by the U.S. government.
Lets discuss how to play online poker and succeed in it while also acknowledging the differences between online and live play.
For those who consider themselves to be professional poker players, one of the hardest things to do is cross over from online to live poker and vice versa. Both present an entirely unique style of play with average skill level, the personal level of the game, and the ability to read other players varying.
READ MORE:Online poker tips for success
The most glaring difference between the online and live poker arenas is the average level of play. When playing online poker, it will not take long to notice that the average player is far more well-versed in the game of poker and typically plays at a higher level than your typical live player would.
One of the reasons why this phenomenon exists is that it is much more difficult to access an online poker game than one in a brick-and-mortar casinos poker room. This provides a barrier for the player pool and often separates the avid, knowledgeable poker player from the gambler who plays for fun.
Especially when considering that online poker is only legalized in a handful of states, the player pool has shrunk, ridding the various platforms of amateur poker players.
Arguably the most appealing thing about live poker is the personal aspect of it as players can engage with their opponents at the table, watching their every move. In live poker, this type of thing does not exist as players are unable to see one another, limiting the information available for decision-making. Live poker play typically grants players the ability to gain information on their opponents from a qualitative sense while online basically offers just the quantitative aspects.
The argument exists for what type of information is more integral to success in poker, but the one point that cannot be argued live poker offersmoreinformation.
Live games typically play a lot looser as the player pool declines in true talent. This makes online games a lot tougher to beat in the long run than live games.
Because live players tend to be a lot more susceptible to putting money in the pot regardless of their hole cards, multiway pots are exponentially more common in online poker. These types of situations are actually quite tough to navigate for the novice player as there is much more information to keep track of.

Online poker is a far more cutthroat, dynamic platform for the game in comparison to live play. In online poker, players can expect to see far more hands per hour as a result. When playing live poker at a casino, the amount of time between hands can add up and this does not include the virtually unlimited decision-making time players are allotted. This dynamic does not exist on the virtual felt.
On average, players can expect to see in the neighborhood of 35-40 hands. Online, players can see three times as many hands with the possibility for more in fast-fold formats.
Because the online poker games run at such a fast pace, it is far more difficult to retain the information that is observed. In live poker, the game is played in a much more personal manner where players can simply be observed as is done in daily life. The only information that most players have at their disposal is a players screen name.
It is very beneficial to extract as much information as possible in online play so that it can be used to ones advantage. One strategy that online pros typically use is writing down information they have on players so they do not forget it when it matters most. Having the knowledge of whether or not a player is bluff-happy or a weak-passive player can be the difference between taking down a large pot or losing a large pot against said player.
Poker is a game of incomplete information. Getting the edge on your opponents in online poker when it comes to this facet of the game could turn a player into a winning one almost immediately.
It goes without saying that the digital age has had a profound impact on the gaming industry and the poker world is no exception to this. Live poker has seen a downturn in popularity while online poker has exponentially increased in terms of the player pool quantity in recent years.
Part of the reason for this trend is the accessibility of online poker. Playing live poker often requires players to make a trip to the nearest casino which can be over an hour away. This can provide a barrier for some when it comes to poker and players become much more likely to turn to alternative options like online poker.

Online poker is currently legal in Nevada,Pennsylvania,West Virginia,New Jersey,Michigan, and Delaware. There will likely be more states adding online poker to their gambling catalogs in the near future with the widespread move towards legalizing sports betting.

David Peters Takes Over 2022 WSOP Player of the Year Lead at Halfway Pole – Poker News Daily
Posted: at 3:04 pm
If you will remember last week when we talked about the 2022 World Series of Poker Player of the Year race, you should recall that I said, this entire list could change in a couple of weeks. I was wrongit only took ONE week for it to be completely upended, with a new overall leader and some other names poking into the Top Ten that should contend over the remainder of the schedule.
Theres a New Sheriff in Town
The Top Five of the 2022 WSOP POY has completely shifted, even after one week of activity. Taking over the #1 slot on the leaderboard is David Peters, who was the victor in the second tournament on the WSOP schedule, the $100,000 High Roller Bounty No Limit Holdem event. He has continued to add points to his total since then, including two more final table finishes. One of those was in a non-High Roller tournament, the $3000 Six Handed No Limit Holdem event, where he finished in fifth place.
All the work Peters has done has earned him 2222.30 points, and it barely ekes him into the POY lead. Daniel Weisman has NOT been playing in the High Roller events, so he is making all his finishes count. To Sunday, he has eight cashes at the 2022 WSOP, including The Housewarming, the MONSTER STACK, and the MILLIONAIRE MAKER. Along with his bracelet win in Event #30, the $1000 Eight Handed Pot Limit Omaha tournament, Weisman has nearly matched Peters step for step in garnering 2208.79 points.
So where did the former leader drop to? Jake Schindler has not cashed in another tournament since his victory in the $50,000 Eight Handed No Limit Holdem even on June 6. Therefore, his point total has stayed the same 1842.34 points, which puts him in fourth place on the ladder. Tucked in right behind him is Chad Eveslage, who has earned 1651.24 points in the POY battle.
Look OutThe Champ is Here!
There is a potential for history lurking in the second half of the Top Ten. The defending World Champion, Koray Aldemir, is ranked sixth at this point in the WSOP with 1524.94 points. Aldemir has been racking up points in both High Roller events (deep runs in the $25K, $50K, and $100K High Roller tournaments) AND has been active in the cheaper events. In the history of the WSOP POY, only one player Greg Merson (2011) has been able to win the World Championship and earn the Player of the Year award in the same year. While it might not be the same thing, should Aldemir win the POY title the year after he wins the Championship Event, it would still be impressive.
Another players run toward the POY has been equally surprising. Canadas Thomas Taylor has clawed his way into the Top Ten with 1432.64 points. The impressive thing about Taylors run is that only ONE of the tournament cashes that he has had has been in an event with higher than a $3000 buy in. Taylor has been able to cobble together six cashes so far and, with another half of the WSOP to go, is in prime shape to be a dark horse in the POY discussion. As of Sunday, this is the Top Ten in the 2022 World Series of Pokers Player of the Year race:
1. David Peters, 2222.302. Daniel Weinman, 2208.793. Daniel Zack, 1950.274. Jake Schindler, 1842.345. Chad Eveslage, 1651.246. Koray Aldemir, 1524.947. Thomas Taylor, 1432.648. Ali Eslami, 1408.089. Scott Seiver, 1403.3710. Rajaee Wazwaz, 1401.43
We have only hit the 42nd event on the overall WSOP schedule for 2022. Theres still another 46 tournaments left to go, including the $50,000 Poker Players Championship and the $10,000 Championship Event. We will repeat what we said last week when we check back in on the standings next Sunday for the 2022 WSOP Player of the Year race, the reason we are doing it is because the standings have completely changed again.

Who is the poker player with the most bracelets in WSOP history? – AS USA
Posted: May 31, 2022 at 2:58 am
The World Series of Poker (WSOP) is the biggest event for players of the game, drawing thousands of participants from all over the planet.
The most serious of them play not only for the considerable amount of money at stake, but also for the gold bracelets that are awarded to the best competitors.
The WSOP started the tradition of handing out these bracelets to event winners in 1976, and these wearable trophies have only gained prestige since then. Receiving one has been said to be the equivalent of winning the Stanley Cup in hockey or the Lombardi Trophy in football.
The person who has collected the biggest number of bracelets is Phil Hellmuth, who is considered the best tournament player in history. He has won 16 of them, with a victory in each of the last five decades, starting in 1989.
The 57-year-old last received the prize in 2021, when he won the $1,500 No Limit 2-7 Lowball Draw which earned him almost $85,000. The most prize money that a bracelet has ever brought him was a little over a million euros, which he won in 2012 for the 10,450 No Limit Holdem Main Event.
The players who are closest to Hellmuths tally are quite some distance behind with ten bracelets each- Doyle Brunson, Johnny Chan, and Phil Ivey. Johnny Moss and Erik Seidel are next with nine apiece, followed by Billy Baxter and Men Nguyen, who both have seven.
Nguyen of Vietnam is the only non-American on this particular list of elite poker players.

Bob Barnes, the World Poker Tour and the growth of the entire Choctaw Nation – Sporting News
Posted: at 2:58 am
His name is Bob Barnes, Table Games Manager at Choctaw Casino. He is one of many who prepare for the entire World Poker Tour Festival, including the Main Event and 72 other poker tournaments, seeing it through to the end. He does it every year in addition to his regular day job of overseeing all table games across more than 218,000 square feet of casino space.
Barnes is not one for the spotlight. Its common to find him walking the floor, talking to staff, or sitting on the sidelines taking in the big picture, always aware of everything going on.
Its all a part of Barnes job, his career of more than 20 years at Choctaw Durant. What he does to ensure a successful WPT Festival leads to more growth and success for the casino, the resort, and the Choctaw Nation at large.
Twenty years of change and growth
When Barnes first started working at Choctaw Durant, the casino was a small building with bingo games and 30 slot machines. The Choctaw Bingo Palace originally opened in 1987 with 28,000 square feet of gambling space. But steadily-increasing popularity prompted the tribe to open more bingo halls on the Choctaw territory.
The growth in the past two decades has been staggering. By 2004, the people of Oklahoma agreed with the Choctaw Nation that expansion would benefit both the tribe and the state. They built a bigger casino and added more casino games. The property now has a building filled with all types of gambling, entertainment venues, restaurants, and shops, not to mention over 7,000 slot machines. The growth continues as this is only one of several large casino properties on Choctaw lands in Oklahoma.
Recently, an Oklahoma City University study showed that the Choctaw Nation is one of the largest contributors to the states economy. Its 2019 economic impact was $2.5B. At that time, it was responsible for more than 18,000 jobs 4,200 at Choctaw Durant alone garnering annual wages of $839M.
Barnes began his relationship with Choctaw Durant in 2001, when he was as a cashier in the kitchen. After three months, he moved to the pull-tabs and bingo floor, became a cage cashier, floor clerk, and then worked with table games when the tribe began offering them. Over time, hes moved into dealing poker, supervising table games, becoming a shift manager, table games supervisor, and later to his current position, managing table games.
He enjoys both working around table games, especially poker. I like that there are so many different situations that call for different, sometimes unique rulings. You never know whats going to happen. Anyone can play. And thats what makes it fun for me.
Technically, on paper, the World Poker Tour is a vendor of Choctaw Durant. In reality, they are partners. Every year, Barnes and his team get excited for the WPT Festival. The WPT first decided to host a Main Tour series there in 2015, elevating Choctaw to new heights.
WPT put Choctaw on the map of the world, he said. We do other events throughout the year, but the WPT is televised in many countries. People around the world now know where Choctaw Durant is.
Barnes said that it has been thrilling to see the tribal operation go from a start-up business to the third-largest casino in the United States with a globally recognized name. While the entire casino has benefited, poker sees the most diversity. The WPT Festival, in particular, sees 20-to-30% more players attending from states other than Oklahoma and nearby Texas.
Moreover, the WPT Festival is a different vibe from other events throughout the year. With the talent that the WPT brings, with their whole team and branding, the high-level players come and their fans follow, Barnes said. It just makes it more of a fun atmosphere.
Weeks of long workdays, no time off, and a wide range of action to manage dont bother Barnes one bit. He loves his job and the tribe. While he will continue to shy away from the cameras and spotlight, he will undoubtedly continue to work hard to make Choctaw Durant a home for some of the best poker events in the world.

Partypoker Banning Players on Its Online Blacklist From Live Tournaments, As Well – Poker News Daily
Posted: at 2:58 am
Much of the talk in the poker world over the last couple months has been about online poker cheating and the possible carry-over into the live tournament world. Several well-known poker players have levied cheating accusations at several other well-known poker players, prompting an elevated discussion of how online cheaters should be handled in live events. Last week, Juha Pasanen, partypokers head of game integrity, announced that anyone banned for cheating on partypoker will also be banned from partypoker LIVE tournaments: MILLIONS, PPC, and Grand Prix Tours.
One of our core philosophies at partypoker is to recreate the thrill of a live poker experience when you play online, wrote Pasanen in a post on the partypoker blog. In the same manner, it would be remiss of us to promise a fun and fair playing environment in our online events, if those same cheaters are able to sit down opposite you at our live tables.
Pasanen added that he and his integrity are quite thankful to players who report suspicious activity at the tables. His team, he said, detects over 90% of fraudulent activity through their own methods, but any help from players to fill in that extra few percent is appreciated.
It does not matter how trivial a potential issue seems, report it to the Game Integrity team, and we guarantee we will thoroughly investigate the matter, he said. Any information can be useful information to my teams and your reports help us build a more complete picture of the players or groups we are investigating.
In a previous blog post, Pasanen addressed the possibility of a global online poker blacklist in which sites would combine their lists of banned players. If a player, for instance at one site, partypoker would ban them, as well, even if they hadnt done anything wrong on party. He said he was all for the idea, but there are loads of problems that would need to be worked out first. Its a tricky thing to implement.
The first hurdle he saw was the wide variation in regulations across the world. If those were handled, simply determining what is bannable and what is not is a sensitive undertaking. Real-time assistance (RTA) and collusion are probably uncontroversial bannable, he believes, but then there are things like bum-hunting and buttoning that might be against site rules, but probably dont rise to the status of bannable offenses. Sites would need to be in total agreement on these.
And then there is the issue for Pasanen of freeloading, or freeriding, as one might call it. He is concerned that not all online poker rooms have the same commitment to game integrity that partypoker and others have, so it would be easy for those sites to just not work hard to protect their games and rather use the universal blacklist as their default blacklist.
But for now, partypoker is taking care of its own business, making sure that anyone who is banned from the site for cheating cant play at partypoker LIVE events.

Commentary
What stands out amongst Mike Clays unit rankings is how high he is on the Cardinals linebackers and how low he is on the Cardinals CBs. Clay must like the athletic potential of Zaven Collins and Isaiah Simmons. As for the the CBs, Marco Wilson and Jeff Gladney are both unproven heading into their second seasons in the NFL, and Byron Murphy was unable to sustain his high level of play in 2021.
Whats fascinating is how much Quentin Harris (Executive Direct of College Scouting) raved about the Cardinals young secondary when he was on the Dave Pasch Podcast. Then, Budda Baker said yesterday: Personally I feel like its the best (defensive back room) that Ive had in my career. A couple of weeks ago, Mike Clay had the Cardinals safeties graded at 1.5. I tweeted Mike to ask why his grade was so low. While he did not respond to the tweet, he recently raised his grade to a 2.0 (which I think is still too low, but at least its an improvement).

When asked why he opted to participate in the Cardinals OTAs, Budda Baker cited these reasons:

The lottery has always generated a healthy dose of humor and cynicism among the whos who. A couple of salient examples for today:
Ive done the calculation and your chances of winning the lottery are identical whether you play or not. (Fran Lebowitz)
There may be less of a chance of losing all the money you put into a mutual fund than there is of losing all the money you put into lottery tickets, but youre never going to win big in a mutual fund. (Robert Kiyosaki)
