After being introduced to online poker by his younger brother around 2007, Andrew Neeme decided to dip his toe into a vast ocean of online poker, but at the smallest of stakes, playing for blinds as low as one penny.

He was frequenting online poker forums like Two Plus Two and Daniel Negreanus Full Contact Poker, and reading about players who would grind for hours and hours, weeks and weeks to turn small initial investments into bigger bankrolls by slowly moving up in stakes as the bankroll grew.

To him, this was a distractiona fun game to see how high he could get his $50 before he went completely bust. But with job prospects looking grim, and with so many people online boasting about their success and their transition from poker as a hobby to poker as a full-time job, Andrew found himself wondering whether poker could be his career.

But as long as he was going from $50 to $2,500 to $0, rinse and repeat, he would never be able to seriously consider poker as anything more than a distraction. Until he found a smaller, less-frequented poker site in a dusty corner of the internet called Bugsys Club.

On Bugsys Club, everything was different. You know that old saying that if you cant spot the sucker at the poker table, then you are the sucker? Well at Bugsys Club, Andrew spotted plenty of suckers.

I was able to move up through the stakes in a relatively short time span, Andrew said. Not that this has any indication of poker skill, on my part. I think its just mainly an indication of how easy online poker was back in the day, especially if you could find a good spot.

Within the span of a year Andrew went from playing online poker in his spare time to playing it eight hours a day with a five-figure bankroll. One day it dawned on him: He was a professional poker player.

Andrew had always heard that live poker was easy pickings for the online professionals. Brick-and-mortar poker rooms were full of fishfrom tourists looking to have fun to older poker pros who were still stuck in a very outdated way of playing the game.

In the early days of the poker boom in the United States, everyone who visited Las Vegas liked to sit in a poker room and play the game they watched on ESPN. The dead money was easy to find and in high supply, and anyone who could do some simple division in their head could get a piece of it as long as they had the time to camp out in casinos.

So Andrew packed up and moved. Even though hed been to Las Vegas about 20 times, that was as a tourist, and when he moved there, he knew next to no one. And life at the poker table, despite technically always being surrounded by other people, is really a life of solitude.

In addition to the loneliness, Andrew experienced another major drawback to being a poker prothe swings, both emotional and in his bankroll.

Eventually, Andrew had hit a wall. Or more appropriately, a ceiling, with the stakes he was playing in Las Vegas. And he felt stuck.

I was playing in this 5/10 game at the Bellagio and I would see the tough game happening in the higher-stakes game, but I just dont think for whatever reason, I dont think its for me, Andrew said.

But it also just feels like those questions are popping into my mind a lot more regularly. What am I going to do with my life? Is this the thing that Im going to do? Does it feel like Ive reached as far as I want to go with this, or is there another idea?

Casey Neistat was an internet trailblazer who, back in 2015, started to document his life every day on YouTube by producing vlogsshort, edited videos about whatever he did that day. Today many of the vloggers from that era, like Jake Paul or David Dobrik, are major celebrities, but back in 2015 they were still a curiosity. Andrew, however, was captivated by Caseys vlogs, and he had an idea.

Andrew saw that there was a hole in how the media covered poker. It focused on high-stakes players and big tournaments. But he figured that documenting his daily life as a mid-stakes grinder, someone earning a comfortable but modest living entirely at the poker tables of Las Vegas, would be interesting and relatable to the universe of aspiring poker professionals in a way that content about millionaires wasnt.

The vast majority of people are playing much more reasonable stakes1/2, 2/5, and maybe have dreams of playing 5/10 regularly, or maybe even for a living, he said. That would be something cool to show to people and what it really looks like. And to be able to have Las Vegas as a backdrop for all that stuff made a lot of sense.

But Andrews vision was bigger than that. He also thought that giving himself exposure in this way might open up doors for him in his career. That perhaps if he could build himself an audience, he could become a kind of blue-collar ambassador for the game.

Poker is a game of psychology and chance, so even the highest levels of play are susceptible to shark attacks, cheaters and other underhanded tactics. For every great player who rises to fame with a string of big wins, theres another who gets barred from playing in any official events for one atrocious crime or another.

The poker world moves at an accelerated pace, and with new formats coming onto the scene often. As a result, we have seen more than our fair share of scandals in recent years. Heres our rundown of the biggest cases ever where cheating threatened the reputation of the game itself.

At the start of the 2016-2017 season, many were hoping to see a new dawn for professional poker after the Black Friday saw the end of the Professional Poker Tour (PPT).

That series had been the only professional tournament circuit for American poker players for almost two decades, but the PPT was dogged by accusations of cheating ever since its inception in 2007.

That same year, a group of online poker players filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Justice, claiming that the government had fostered and supported a black market for online poker by allowing access to state-regulated sites.

One of the most shocking scandals in poker history occurred at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in 2013. At the end of the events Main Event, two men went head-to-head for the final $31.5 million prize.

One of them was professional poker player Howard Lederer, whod been barred from all official events for the previous two years due to a long and sordid list of scandals. With Lederer out, the other final table participant was Tom Hall, whod won the WSOP Main Event in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

The contest had begun with a heads-up duel between Hall and Eduardo Snchez, a Brazilian poker pro whod never finished lower than second in his WSOP career. The duel came down to the wire, with Snchez leading the final hand with a higher hand than Hall.

Halls hand was revealed to be a pair of 10s, which yielded a royal flush. As the house dealer announced a royal flush for Hall, Lederer stood up and protested loudly. Those are Snchezs cards, Lederer said.

The Poker Stars Fake Tournament Scandal was a high-profile case of fraud at one of the largest poker sites in the world, where the head of the tournament department systematically manipulated the outcome of top tournament events.

This scam started to unravel back in 2012, when in-game chat records of a tournament at Poker Stars Bodog Poker site revealed that senior management had been colluding with team members. Were rigging this tournament, a member of Poker Stars Tournament Department told his colleagues in chat.

In 2012, the US Department of Justice shut down US online poker sites Full Tilt Poker and Bodog, claiming that the companies had been running an illegal gambling operation. The sites were fined $250 million and threatened with a total shutdown of all poker-related activities in the United States.

But the owners of Full Tilt Poker were able to raise more than $10 million to keep the company afloat. They ultimately agreed to refund customers and pay a $250 million fine. However, the scandal continued to dog the company as employees claimed in lawsuits that the company had run a Ponzi scheme to pay off the fine.

Its hard to imagine how one of the greatest players in the history of the game could have sunk so low as to cheat in an attempt to improve his play. But thats exactly what happened when Phil Hellmuth decided to rig $1.3 million in $10,000 chip play at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in 2005.

The incident is just one of many controversies surrounding the worlds biggest poker event, which has been dogged by cheating scandals since its inception in 1970. The 2005 WSOP was no different, with a number of incidents highlighting the extensive efforts of unscrupulous players to manipulate the final table outcome of high-stakes games.

The online poker boom of the 2000s saw many top-level players turn to online gaming in order to make a living. But many of these pros were lured away from the regulated game of poker by the promise of big money to be made in online tournaments.

But as soon as they turned their attention to online cash games, they found themselves in serious trouble with the law. One of the most high-profile examples of this came from the company Playground Poker, which one of its founders had defrauded in an effort to fund a fake tournament.

After a series of high-profile scandals involving cheating at the highest levels of poker, it comes as little surprise to find that the biggest fraud in the history of the game was perpetrated by a professional poker player. But who, exactly, would cheat by inflating the value of chips during a tournament?

Well, if you posed the question to Phil Hellmuth, youd get an answer that sets the world of poker back a decade. In a 2005 World Series of Poker (WSOP) event, Hellmuth was forced to pay out $2.1 million due to chip-bet rigging.

The entire incident was sparked by Hellmuths decision to bet against his own hand, which is something hed later admit was a reckless gamble with his own money. After the WSOP, Hellmuth signed a deal with Caesars Entertainment Corporation to promote their online poker offering.

"youaremelon" overcame a field of 355 players to capture the win in Event 61-H:$500 NLHE [8-Max, Main Event-High] and become the first ever PokerStars Ontario Championship of Online Poker (ONCOOP) Main Event champion. They came into the day in the middle of the pack of Day 1 survivors, 25th out of an initial field of 48, but quickly caught some heat to surge toward the top of the leaderboard.

"bachelder" finished in second place after being unable to overcome a large heads-up deficit. Day 2 chip leader Matthew "Sucra71" Gillingham rounded out the top three.

Final Table Action

Though Day 2 began with 48 players, it did not take long for that field to be whittled down to a final table of nine. Coming into the final table as the shortstack was "neclord-doom", so it was not surprising to see them make the first exit, their suited ace-king unable to overcome the ladies of Gillingham.

"jadedjason" was the next to go, finding themselves on the bad end of a preflop cooler against a rampant Gillingham. Not long after, start of day chipleader "Iri$shPoet" was sent to the rail in seventh place when their eights were outflipped by "youaremelon".

"fahdsmom" had been near the top of the leaderboard for much of the tournament but their run came to an end in sixth place when their Ace-Nine could not beat the fives of "youaremelon". "InTheAyers26" had been short for some time before eventually getting felted by "wonogos" after their eights failed to hold.

It was none other than "wonogos" who was next to crash out, first getting whittled down to a short stack before being finished off by Gillingham. It was Gillingham who had dominated the final table up to three-handed play, amassing a sizable chiplead. That all came toppling down in quick order after losing several pots to "youaremelon" before running his ace-queen into the rockets of "youaremelon" in the biggest pot of the tournament.

Heads-Up Play

Gillingham's elimination set the stage for a heads-up battle between "youaremelon" and "bachelder". "youaremelon" began with a more than 7:1 chiplead and never looked back. It did not take long for them to wrap up matters, outflopping the Ace-Nine of "bachelder" to secure $36,865 and the title of ONCOOP Main Event champion.
