From 18 to 21: A step in the right direction – Deccan Herald

The government tabling a bill to increase the minimum legal age for marriage for girls to 21 years (based on the recommendations of a taskforce led by former Samata Party chief Jaya Jaitly) seems like a bit of sunshine amid the dark clouds of a culture otherwise premised on patriarchy. The bill has since been sent to a parliamentary committee for examination. If passed into law, it will have far-reaching consequences that will even require working towards modifying and reorienting personal laws of several religions as marriage is key to other socio-economic factors like faith and inheritance.

The present minimum legal age of marriage for girls is 18 years while that for men is 21. The move to raise the former to 21 is path-breaking and important because it changes the perception that girls do not deserve the same educational and career-building opportunities that can be accessed by men. When the minimum age for marriage is 18, it becomes a denial of the right to pursue education after school or the opportunity to become independent financially up to the age of 21 years, a right secured so far only for the male population.

The increase in the minimum age for marriage for women will result in amendments in several laws and legal procedures, such as the 1955 Hindu Marriage Act, 1972 Christian Marriage Act, 1936 Parsi Marriage Act, the Divorce Act, etc. The changed law will also impact age-old customs related to inheritance, divorce, maintenance. Once passed in Parliament, the law will mean that Indian women too will have the opportunity to educate themselves and engage in livelihood and will get 21 years to do that, just like the male population.

While the proposed bill may be a move in the right direction and significant for womens empowerment though, it is important to highlight that the move has failed to delve into the socio-cultural and economic factors that make child marriages common in the social fabric.

While we cannot emphasise enough that women/men must not be forced into early marriage, there should be a focus on generating awareness, education among them such that they refuse early marriage. It is also important that there are widespread campaigns and awareness programmes on the increase in the marriage age and people must be encouraged to abide by the new legislation.

There is also a need to focus on some urgent deliverables, without which the law wouldnt mean much, like increase in enrolment rates of girls at both school/higher education levels, especially from the remote/disadvantaged communities; building new institutions for skill training/enterprise building at subsided rates such that women from humble backgrounds may be able to access these, etc.

Unless these deliverables are given priority, it will be impossible to attain the measure of gender justice as intended by the programme.

Another significant requirement would be to increase healthcare facilities for women, focus on issues like maternal wellbeing, childcare, nutrition etc.

A 2017 report by the United Nations showed that over 27% of Indian women are forced into early marriages, before they even turn 18. Apart from ensuring implementation of the law, we should ensure that young women have access to free/subsidised education, employment and entrepreneurship opportunities, etc., which they seem to be missing today.

Child marriage is blatantly against childrens rights and makes them vulnerable to exploitation, violence and abuse, and while it also impacts boys, its impact on women is disproportionate as it denies them the right to self-determination, education, health and well-being. A girl married early is more likely to enter pregnancy at a young age and face childbirth-related complications and even the possibility of death.

It is well-known that India has the largest number of child brides, and at present nearly 16% of Indian girls are married off between the ages of 15 and 19 years. While child marriages are a result of complex socio-cultural factors and pressing economic concerns, there is gender inequality and a belief that the human rights of girls do not matter. Further, this leads to inter-generational poverty and illiteracy, impacting millions of families.

Thus, while the decision to increase the minimum legal age for marriage for girls to 21 years is a step in the right direction, the fact is that the responsibility of joint and collaborative efforts by the central and state governments, the civil society, media, individuals and the larger socio-cultural fabric is much greater now. We must work towards a nation that celebrates its women and prioritises their human rights, not out of charity or pity but because thats the right thing to do, with firm resolve and commitment.

Probably something spurred from being an only child up North while my cousins down South were country strong, which always showed whenever we visited.

Ive always been aware of the need to be healthy and active for the sake of ones quality of life. Ive also known from an early age that this has little to do with financial or social status anyone can be fit and healthy if they choose.

It stuck out to me that people make different choices, and I didnt understand why until later on. Why dont some people enjoy pushing themselves? Feeling that theyre moving toward being their best? Dont they know you cant be a helper if you arent strong enough?

While I learned about the value of service growing up in church, conversations around self-esteem came in high school. At Riverside University High School, I learned about Maslows Hierarchy of Needs and the idea of self-actualization. This concept helped me string together these thoughts.

I began to study, on my own, how fitness and self-esteem can be a reciprocal system that teaches you more about who you are, what you can do and how you can engage.

I actually began offering my classmates fitness training as well as personal development in high school. I brought roast beast sammiches for the girls who I learned suffered from eating disorders. Wed skip class, sit in the hallways, eat and talk. I didnt get how upper middle class white girls felt bad about themselves. From my perspective as a Black boy, they were the most celebrated and sought-after humans. Right up there with Asian babies.

I joined the U.S. Army during high school and went to basic training the summer between my junior and senior year. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience. I was able to study behavioral health in an organization that has trained thousands and thousands of people! I also learned more about my particular strengths, motivations and how I might best serve society. I became very interested in peoples ability to heal and develop their own resilience.

After the military, I went to massage therapy school, furthering my studies in healing through holistic health. I began to see the clear disparity in how African Americans were treated in health care and the lack of connection to natural healing. And so I founded Beans and Cornbread, an organization committed to wellness for African Americans. While the organization was short-lived because I was new to nonprofit work, I continued to make wellness work a part of everything I got into.

Over the past 25 years, Ive continued to learn, working with various local arts organizations from African dance to therapeutic arts. While working with various groups, it seemed most of my performances connected to nature from global warming to migration of the Monarch butterfly to water conservation to Native American folk tales, to list just a few. All of these shows were backed by science and research, which continued to grow my learning.

Nearby Nature MKE came into my life just as I was thinking about what to do with myself. It is a perfect fit. I have spent most of my working life in areas where what I brought to the table was a hard sell to a community that has historically been left out and kept away from any and all advantages.

Nearby Nature MKE is an organization whose mission is to reconnect Black folk back to nature, offering nature education classes in schools, churches and neighborhood centers. We hike, plant trees, kayak, engage in land stewardship and restoration, build trails, teach nature education, bird watch, track animals, identify plants and trees and share about blue and green careers.

I recognize the very real need to reconnect African Americans to the healing power of nature.

We are focusing on the Lincoln Creek Greenway neighborhoods and the north end of the 30th Street Corridor. While we have maps going back to 1820 showing this watershed, most Milwaukeeans Ive encountered dont know where this is. We have a lot of fun, take an exploratory pace, add some art and have good conversations.

We bring healing and cultivate empowerment by building pathways to nature, and thereby, to ones self.

Body positivity influencer Lucy Fitz shares her advice on how to avoid guilt over Christmas weight gain – RSVP Live

There are many things we associate with Christmas time. Swapping gifts, seeing old friends, spending quality time with family and food.

Despite the rise of the concept of body positivity to public consciousness, we are often bombarded by messages of caution about putting on weight at this time of year, and how to "improve" our bodies through weight loss in the new year.

While losing weight and improving fitness can be a positive experience for many, the guilt around over-indulging at Christmas time is a negative feeling most people can relate to.

Mental health advocate and body positivity influencer Lucy Fitz has long been open about her struggles and triumphs with her own sense of self-image.

The 21-year old influencer, who got her start on social media while still in secondary school by sharing her makeup looks, is a promoter of positive self talk when it comes to body image.

Lucy has established a strong community online of over 80,000 followers, who appreciate her candid words about mental health and her penchant for sharing her unedited body in an empowering way.

Speaking with RSVP Live , the Barcelona-based Limerick native shared that Christmas is undoubtably a daunting time for anyone who has a dissatisfaction with their image.

"I think that Christmas time is, for a lot of people that suffer with their body image either trying to gain or lose weight, it's a scary time because of the indulging, the Christmas dinner, the nights out," she told RSVP Live.

"It saddens me how that people feel that way towards Christmas because it's supposed to be a happy time - it's not meant to be a time of stressing about what food you're consuming and what the consequences are going to be in January because you're having a good time during Christmas."

"People need to remember that unless your body weight is causing you health problems then there's nothing to worry about, and I know it's easier said than done because social media has painted a picture of what we're supposed to look like."

"But in reality everyone's body shape is completely different and there is no right or wrong."

Lucy's advice to people who's confidence takes a knock at this time of year is to try to practice positive self talk - if you wouldn't let someone speak to your best friend or sister the way you speak to yourself, that's a good indicator that it's time to change your internal narrative.

"I believe that the way you speak to yourself is so important," she said.

"I spent years putting myself down, constantly criticising my body to myself when I was alone. That really can impact the way that you look at your body, and also it's disrespectful towards yourself! You need to show yourself love and positivity otherwise your mindset just isn't going to change."

While changing that inner narrative can be difficult, taking some small steps towards personal empowerment every day can make a big difference.

"The way you speak to yourself every day, even if it's just you in the mirror saying 'I look good,' is really important for establishing good body image."

"Also when you get these thoughts like 'oh, if I just eat healthy or work out for a couple of weeks I'm going to lose this' - you need to push down that thought and replace it with a positive thought, like actually my body does everything for me and it's gotten me where I am today' - it needs to be honoured and not bashed."

Lucy will be returning to Ireland this year on Christmas Eve, and like many Irish natives who now reside abroad, she is focused on the excitement of seeing and spending time with her family.

"I'm really looking forward to seeing my family, I think when you're living away from your family and it's going to be my first time coming home for Christmas, I'm just really looking forward to being in my home house with them because when you're away from that it really puts it into perspective that that's all that matters."

4 Ways to Lead Your Organization Through the Omicron Surge – Entrepreneur

We are all aware that navigating the last couple of years has had a devastating impact on our organizations and teams, but then for a few brief months it seemed like we could see the light at the end of what has been a very dark pandemictunnel. And then came the discovery of the Omicron variant.

All the hope for a return to some kind of sustained normal in the near future appears to have been dashed, with some regions of the world reporting cases of Omicron doubling every two-to-three days and returning to work-from-home recommendations.

Many leaders are concerned about what this will mean for their organizations, and want to know what they can do to minimize further impact onemployee mental health and engagement, while avoiding another wave of the Great Resignation.

The reality is that the pandemic has negatively affected the needs of our employees and in some cases exacerbated and highlighted the places where their working environment and experience were already detrimental. Many employees are now no longer prepared to work in roles where they are sacrificing, and expected to sacrifice, so much personallyfor their jobs.

The good news is that you don't need to fix the unfixable; you can't neutralize the pandemic or reverse the specific ways in which it is affecting your employees.Instead, to support your team through what lies ahead, it is important to identify which needs are being affected under the surface by this latest chapter in the pandemic saga,and to look for new and different ways that you can meet those same needs in order to help your teams cope until we finally get to the other side of this next wave.

There are fourmain universal needs that have been most severely impacted for employees since the pandemic began, and unsurprisingly these are the same four needs likely to be affected by the surge of the Omicron variant. Here are four ways that you as a leader can support and underpin these needs for your teams in the coming weeks and months:

Foundation/Function Needs.These are the needs that relate to our physical wellbeing. The pandemic has affected peoples' foundation/function needs in a plethora of ways, from supply chain issues and panic buyingto stressaffecting sleep patterns and school closures disruptinghome environments.Adding to this, many companies are expecting employees to work more hours, with less breaks, and asking for higher work output, especially amidthe current labor crisis.A lot of companies are losing employees because they are simply burning out and cannot see a way of staying within their role without it compromising their physical wellbeing both in and outside of work. It is vitally important that employers are supporting their teams in maintaining a healthy work/life balance and getting enough breaks.One simple way that leaders can help with this is to support staff in prioritization giving tasks and projects status on amust/should/could continuum,so that they can focus on the essentials without burning out.

Security.This is the need that relates to our physical, mental and emotional security. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the level of uncertainty and insecurity about what lies ahead has meant that this need has been impacted more than most. Employees are seeking a sense of security and reassurance that their future is at leastsafe in a work context. One of the things that negatively affects this sense of security is a lack of communication with teams, which can lead to employees conjuring worst-case scenarios to fill the knowledge vacuum. So, as a leader, the more you can communicate proactively with your teams and provide reassurance both about the future of your organization and their position in it, the more secure your employees will feel.

Connection.This is the need that relates to our sense of community and belonging. Throughout the pandemic, with the focus on social distancing and reducing interactions with others in order to prevent the spread of the virus, social connections havebeen seriously eroded. When you add to this that many organizations have added some element of remote working, your employees' need for connection is likely to have been negatively affected. That's why leaders need to find more opportunities and ways to connect with their teams and to encourage them to connect with each other, including using technology as a facilitator.These connections must still have as much of ahumanelement as possible; a focus purely business matters, combined with the absence of face-to-face contact, can feel sterile and alienating. When you connect with your employees over the coming weeks and months, be sure to include some element of personal connection alongside your organizational objectives in order cultivate more trust. And where possible, put in place initiatives for your employees to connect with each other on a more personal and social level, as well as a professional one.

Personal Power Need.This is the need that relates to our feeling of empowerment. It has also been the most severely compromised over the last couple of years. While leaders cannot do anything to change the control that their team members have over the pandemic itself and the ripple effect on their day-to-day lives, what they can do is help them to feel more empowered in their working roles. Leaders wanting to address this need can support their employees in having greater autonomy within their current roles, and also speak to them about what their career goals and desires are, helping them to see the ways that they are able to facilitate their movement along that path with clear milestones, objectives and ways to manage their own progress.

While putting initiatives in place to support these four employee needs won't prevent the Omicron variant affecting your team, they will underpin your employees' needs during the worst of what is still to come and help them to navigate and cope with the path ahead.

By doing this, leaders will cultivate more trust, connection and loyalty from and with their teams, enhancing and developing employee engagement, which we know creates a direct positive impact to an organizations bottom-line.

NC jamboree fails to give message of inclusion – The Himalayan Times

KATHMANDU, DECEMBER 21

The 14th general convention of the Nepali Congress gave mandate to Sher Bahadur Deuba to run the party for the second time, but analysts and political leaders argue that the jamboree failed to give a strong message of inclusion, as no Madhesi or Tharu is either vice-president or general secretary.

Although Bimalendra Nidhi, who has more than 40 years of association with the party and represents Madhes, contested for party presidency, he got only 250 votes in the first round of election. There was no Madhesi candidate for the post of general secretary. Even the representation of marginalised communities for posts of joint general secretary is just cluster-wise representation.

Political analyst Uddhab Pyakurel said although the NC was better than other major political parties for ensuring cluster-wise representation, Madhesi representation had gone down in recent years. "Madhesis' representation was 12.5 per cent in the party's top structure formed after the 12th general convention.

It went up to 14.11 per cent after the 13th convention. This time Madhesis' representation has come down to 8.29 per cent," Pyakurel said.

He said the NC failed to understand the legacy of legendary leader BP Koirala, who had ensured inclusion of marginalised groups back in 1960s. Pyakurel said that during the 2006 popular movement, parties had given the slogan of empowerment of marginalised groups, especially Madhesis, women, Dalits, and indigenous nationalities, but that seems to have been long forgotten. "This is also because the current constitution has diluted inclusion, other than fixing 33 per cent political representation for women," he said.

Political analyst Chandra Kishor said it was surprising that the NC, which has been in national politics for 70 years with a strong political base in Tarai, did not elect Madhesis among top office bearers. A Tharu leader, Bijaya Kumar Gachhadar, who contested the election for vice-president from the Deuba faction got 1,906 votes and lost to Dhan Raj Gurung by just two votes. Another candidate for the same post, Purna Bahadur Khadka, who was also from the Deuba faction, secured 2,121 votes. This means voters who voted for Khadka did not vote for Gachhadar.

"Gachhadar's personal performance may also be one factor for his defeat, but it is clear that all Deuba loyalists who voted for Khadka did not vote for Gachhadar," Chandra Kishor added. He said there was no Madhesi among the 35 central working committee members who won election under the open category.

"As far as provincial representation is concerned, it was natural for Province 2 to elect Madhesis, as the province is dominated by Madhesi population.

But even in this election, two candidates of hill origin Ananda Prasad Dhungana and Ramesh Rijal - won the election unopposed. Jungi Lal Yadav, who was also from Deuba's team, withdrew his nomination paving the way for Dhungana and Rijal to win unopposed,"

Chandra Kishor said.

He said new election results indicated that voters of all major parties were conservative towards Madhes and Madhesis.

Another political analyst, Tula Narayan Shah, said NC convention results reconfirmed the fact that NC too was not ready to accept Madhesi leaders for top posts.

"Madhesi and Tharus or other marginalised communities might hold the post of general secretary or vice-president in near future, but they cannot win party presidency," Shah said. He added that this scenario was less likely to change at least for the next 20 years.

Tear Tracks is a break-up album, through and through, Banoffee capturing all-consuming obsessions and the most embarrassing thoughts of a break-up and using the trappings of PC Music-indebted electro-pop to channel earnestness.

Working with producers Petro, Ceci G and Charles Teiller, Banoffee creates an album of gentle synth-pop frustrations, letting her (and listeners) feel out and thrash through feelings big and small. JR

Comprising members from other reputable Aussie acts (Miami Horror and Slum Sociable), Telenova burst on the scene with a firm understanding of whats needed to cut through. The anchor of the Telenova allure is vocalist and filmmaker Angeline Armstrong, who deliberately chose to spin narratives about outlaws and mystique instead of personal and banal stories of love and heartbreak. Their debut EP Tranquilize is a refreshing change of pace for listeners looking for a bit of cinematic drama in their lives. CT

A long, lonesome road of personal history runs through Liz Stringers sixth solo record. From her childhood and upbringing, to her sobriety, to her always-the-bridesmaid career as a singer-songwriter, no stone is left unturned. Throughout it all, however, Stringer is undeterred.

Her songs are equal parts heart and soul, backed by resplendent folk-rock and a voice that cuts directly through the bullshit. You can feel Liz Stringer all the way through First Time Really Feeling, from the career-best title track to the breathtaking guts-spill of My History. Fuck that, he said. Hijack! instead soars on strings from Sam Lipman as Ladder sings over wicked waltzes about characters he met at rehab and, sure, the time he nearly died in the Blue Mountains fires, paralysed by fear and inebriation. He delivers it all with a tired, knowing grin. Single Leaving Eden is a whole new genre: baroque n roll. MC

Jaguar Jonze has sent shockwaves through the industry in the fight against toxic masculinity and rape culture. But equally worthy of headlines is Deena Lynchs brand of art pop, which is gripping, gorgeous and grisly all at once.

Her pandemic EP Antihero builds on the gunpowder grooves and nightclub shimmer of its predecessor Diamonds & Liquid Gold, amplifying the snarling bite of her Telecaster that tears through the mix like a hot knife through butter. Lynch soars overhead with her striking vocals, confidently delivering messages of staunch resilience and fearless self-empowerment. Despite the EPs title, Jaguar Jonze hasnt been reluctantly dragged into the spotlight shes rightfully seized it for herself. MD

One of the fun things about listening to a band with two singers is oscillating between a favourite. Good Mornings Liam Parsons and Stefan Blair politely one-up each other over their sixth major release Barnyard: Parsons draws first blood with the breathy, ennui-soaked Too Young To Quit then Blair squares up on Depends On What I Know, which sounds like the Velvet Underground meets Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever.

And on it goes, making for an all topsy, no turvy album of humble indie pop classics and Good Mornings most cohesive work yet. MC

Since 2018, Tkay Maidza has moved away from the EDM-hype tracks that made the then-Adelaide teen a fixture on the Australian festival circuit. The finale of her Last Year Was Weird mixtape trilogy is a 22-minute victory lap across genres and styles.

Where lesser artists might lose themselves in the mix, Maidza flexes the versatility already on display in Vol 2, freeing herself and long-time producer Dan Farber from overthinking things. Whether its the laid-back piano-rap odyssey of Eden, the neo-soul heartbreak of Breathe or a trap track about besting three Kims Kardashian, Lil, and Possible Maidza makes it sound easy. JR

Hiatus Kaiyotes third album Mood Valiant is their most ambitious to date. Balancing the rhythmic skill of math-jazz, heavy funk and bossa nova with slow-burning cinematic strings not to mention ambient animal vocalisations and Casio-esque drum programming Mood Valiants seamlessness almost defies logic.

As Nai Palm pushes her voice to its limits (shes never sung so high or low on any other record, shes said), the thoughtful, precise arrangements evolve, never remaining stagnant. On this record, Hiatus Kaiyote are a four-piece that flow together like water rapids, swelling and eventually stilling in perfect unity. BQ

Me And Ennui Are Friends, Baby is difficult music. Unlike the full-band arrangement of its predecessor Please Daddy, the only things youll hear are Sarah Mary Chadwicks sickly howl and her fingers lifting off the keys of the piano.

Chadwicks lyrics are characterised by gentle brutality (Death comes first / Dont wanna talk about the break-up); love is infected by the same wound that it heals: Mothers never love me / Baby, thats why you should. And Me And Ennui is also laced with humour in the sense that Chadwick dangles listeners over the void and tells them a joke right before she lets go. JM

Has any other record so vividly channelled the fragile tensions and underlying fears of the past two years? Gaz and co. mine ready-made nightmare fuel conspiracy theories, tech dystopia, reactionary politics, the pandemic for the sprawling, esoteric noise-rock of their most sonically adventurous album yet, visceral and unsettling in both thematic scope and sonic execution.

Fiona Kitschin and Erica Dunn shine on Suburbiopia and New Romeo Agent respectively, and album three feels altogether like the bands most collaborative affair: a locked-in, symbiotic organism even when the band are at their most experimental and abstract. It may not make for simple listening, but Deep States is a triumph for one of Australias most inventive bands. AG

The Prince of Darkness last two records were a lacuna in his gothic canon, mourning the death of his son Arthur in freeform elegies. Carnage, written and released amid global catastrophe, marries those somber forms with flashes of aggression that havent been heard since Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!.

Carnage is a sermon from Caves lockdown balcony pulpit but rather than being literal, the songwriter channels the apocalyptic circumstances into abstract pathos. Travel might be impossible, he posits, but the transcendence of love, social change, and memory can still be found in the mind.

On this record Cave is both a beat poet lothario Im a Botticelli Venus with a penis / Riding an enormous scalloped fan (White Elephant) and a preacher of eternal love The morning is beautiful and so are you (Balcony Man). Those two modes are mirrored in the instrumentals: a tensile battle between synthetic minimalism and strings, often within the same song. Its his most digestible work in a decade. JM

Indie pop turns sour and brooding on The Goon Saxs third album, as the Brisbane trio document fumbling for meaning in ones 20s. Louis Forster, James Harrison and Riley Jones swap instruments and vocals alike, stoking acute emotional interplay. Soon after Forster resignedly sings Lets just get high again on opener In the Stone, Jones challenges that impulse to disassociate: Do you think its better, not feeling any of this at all?

More anxious and anchored in post-punk than the bands previous records, Mirror II is newly noisy as well, settling into shoegazing dirges amid synth interludes and distorted drum machine. Written in a tiny Queensland share-house after Forster relocated to Berlin (cue a few German lyrics on Bathwater), the album is stilted, angst-ridden and almost suffocating at times. But the trios pure pop instincts havent faded, as proven by Joness intensely dreamy Tag and Harrisons askew outlier Carpetry. DW

Yolngu rapper/singer Baker Boy broke out in 2017 with Cloud 9 proudly declaring his Blakness in Yolngu Matha and English. On his joyous debut, Gela, its title referencing his skin name, Baker Boy flexes his voice, artistry and, yes, dance moves.

Danzal Baker celebrates his cultural heritage, Gela opening with the traditional Galpu song Announcing The Journey, performed by Glen Gurruwiwi. Baker also furnishes more party jams in the mould of his carefree hit Cool As Hell the housey Headphones (featuring a soulful Lara Andallo) and the exuberant My Mind (a team-up with G Flip) are two such highlights.

But a defiant Baker also delivers protest anthems. In Survive, with monologue by actor Uncle Jack Charles, he addresses First Nations Australian experiences of intergenerational trauma, while emphasising resilience. Ultimately, Gela extols community and collectivity. It showcases Baker Boy as a pop star with purpose. CW

Life is gory and boring sometimes, Hannah Joy astutely repeats in the final seconds of Middle Kids second studio album. The indie-rock trios lead singer and lyricist aimed to do away with metaphor this time around and instead directly address her flaws and experiences. The obvious consequence of this decision is Today Were The Greatest makes for an honest listen, but it also gives the listener the chance to connect with the record more intimately.

Stepping away from the rocky instrumentation of debut album Lost Friends and follow-up EP New Songs For Old Problems, the band explore a tender new sound to complement the wounds Joy has chosen to expose. Now armed with two LPs that stand securely apart from each other, it leaves us wondering how Middle Kids sound will evolve in the years to come, and what facets of Joys life she wishes to explore next, if at all. Rhinestones plays like a transmission from the spirit world. Standing under a gauzy veil of plucked guitar strings, reverb and gentle whispers, Jonnine Standish and Nigel Yang lasso warped fragments of popular music into their orbit.

For the first time, HTRK decided to immerse themselves in the music of others while making an album. The new approach coincided with the launch of Haunted Brunch, their NTS Radio show inspired by a trip to the Victorian ghost town of Walhalla, drawing them to gothic country and eerie folk music.

Rhinestones is also a delicate tribute to live-to-air radio a format that creates a psychic connection between its listeners who relinquish their taste to the whims of the airwaves in a collective listening experience. Underpinning it all is an exploration of the pure power of friendship thoughts of people we once knew that have drifted away, or reconnecting at a time when many of us have been forced apart. Recorded during a time of separation, its an album celebrating that which connects us. NB

If you listen closely to Ngaiires third album 3, youll hear an artist that composes from their gut. Vibrant and alive, 3 was born out of Ngaire Josephs return to her home country Papua New Guinea for the first time in two decades. Then after a near-death experience while giving birth, which left the artist with severe chronic pain, Ngaiire gained newfound clarity; with 3, she refused to sacrifice her honesty to a music industry over-represented by white gatekeepers.

Propelled by Ngaiires smoky yet agile voice, these soulful, electric R&B songs often soar into cathartic climaxes. She sounds as if shes digging her heels in, refusing to let anyone diminish or warp her identity, her desires, or her sound. Meticulously planned, complex harmonies sink deep into your bones, warming you from the inside. 3 is a revelatory record about loving hard, surrendering to that love and to the pain that inevitably follows, and, then ultimately, letting go. The flatly forthright title of Alice Skyes second album gives you a precise insight into who she is as an artist: uncompromisingly honest and deeply relatable. The Wergaia, Wemba Wemba songwriter sings delicately of the person she wants to be on opener Stay In Bed Im working on myself to get better at it but becomes enveloped by who she really is on Grand Ideas: Everything I have is too heavy to hold / Everything I do feels out of my control.

The entire album ruminates in desertion, loneliness and devotion, over both gentle and grungy guitars with woozy piano and restrained production courtesy of Jen Cloher. But the gut-punches come in Skyes unbound lyricism, which has you feeling every throb of pain she does. She keeps you transfixed with her singular, spotlight vocals, but leaves you emotionally winded with lines like The part of me that hates me really loves you / Enjoy my party trick, Ill break my own heart for you. Strip back everything a good artist knows and theres nothing left. Strip back everything a great artist knows and youre left with bedrock brilliance.

On her third album Courtney Barnett stood still and took stock of her world, the isolation of pandemic life allowing for both visceral self-examination and the gentlest of yearning. Whether its saying goodbye to a former love on Before You Gotta Go or hoping for a first spark of romantic recognition on If I Dont Hear From You Tonight, the Melbourne singer-songwriter compresses her wry wordplay and guitar melodies down to an intimate essence thats deceptively casual in its unadorned brilliance.

With Warpaint drummer Stella Mozgawa as her instrumental foil and co-producer, Barnett has found that a single chord or stressed syllable can be the key to unlocking a compelling song. Things Take Time, Take Time is full of such pocket universes. CM

A floor tom booms out under the rumble of a guttural bass-line. A guitar, electric in every sense, seethes and snarls. A belligerent chant atop the entire fray, to ensure everyone within a 50km radius is well aware that said chanter has arrived. This is the sound of Guided by Angels, which opens Amyl & The Sniffers second album Comfort To Me, but its also something else: lightning in a bottle.

The Melbourne outfit finally have recorded material that captures the all-encompassing intensity of their ramshackle live shows. Comfort To Me is a cocksure and confident record (as on the single Hertz, which buzzes with triumphant escapism), but its also not afraid to show a different side amid the frenzied mosh see the stark, desperate Knifey. We needed to make a whole new thing, the fiery Amy Taylor told NME earlier this year. Higher production and all that, we wanted it to sound fucking awesome. Theyve definitely succeeded. DJY

Boundaries dont exist to Kofi Owusu-Ansah. As Genesis Owusu, he is an artist who thrives in and is liberated by chaos, never once willing to stifle his ambition or his emotion. That unwavering tenacity led the Canberra artist to his debut album Smiling With No Teeth, which is his cathartic and singular response to the intertwining menaces of mental illness and societys deep-seated anti-Blackness.

Steered through his own psyche with the help of deftly chosen collaborators, like Kirin J Callinan and Michael DiFrancesco, Genesis Owusu leaves no punch unpulled and no moment unmilked on Smiling With No Teeth. From the raucous opening moments of On The Move! and the breathless sprints of The Other Black Dog, Owusu bombards with distorted vocals and barrages with frantic percussion. He beckons us to get lost in his internal hall of mirrors with him, staring into the rippling confusion of Centrefold, the funky confidence of Dont Need You, the existential pondering of Gold Chains, the ecstasy of A Song About Fishing and beyond.

As Owusu continues to dance through his own neuroses, he learns over a melange of crunchy hip-hop, crooning R&B, scattered avant-funk and then some the dance is never really over. Smiling With No Teeth doesnt provide the tidy closure other tales scramble to provide, but Genesis Owusu isnt here to give us neat hes here to give us reality. JL

Dulce Mara on Collaborating With Late Brazilian Artist Marilia Mendona: She Left Us a Gift – Billboard

When Dulce Mara heard the final version of what would be her first-ever collaboration with Marlia Mendona, she got chills.

I would hear it over and over again, the Mexican singer-songwriter tells Billboard, who on Thursday (Dec. 16) released her duet Amigos Con Derechos with Mendona, the 26-year-old Brazilian sertanejo star who passed away Nov. 5 in a tragic plane crash. To hear her sing in Spanish was really special because it was something she wanted to do in her career, and she had just started taking Spanish classes.

Originally featured in her Origen album, which became the first set she released as an independent artist in October, Amigos Con Derechos is a country-tinged pop track on finding the courage to get out of a toxic relationship. It was the perfect song to sing with Mendona, says Dulce, as she often sang about female empowerment and connected with women through her lyrics.

The song, which I wrote along with Marcela de La Garza in 2010, was very much her style, lyrically and musically, adds the former RBD member. Sertanejo is like country, and out of all the songs on my album, this one is the that has the most folk instruments.

Dulce and Mendonas respective teams had been in talks since August about the collaboration, which was proposed by Dulces team. I was doing collaborations in Brazil and I suggested doing something with a big local artist that had the same vibe as my album and they said, Marlia is the top, and the most loved artist in Brazil right now. So we sent a request and she said yes right away.

Four days later, Mendona sent her two separate recordings of the track: one in in Spanish and one in Portuguese. When I heard her versions I thought, Wow she really made this song hers. So, I went in and added my vocals and it was so weird to have spent so many hours singing with her in a duet when shes not longer here. But I still felt this special connection, although we never got to meet or talk.

Dulce and Mendona were supposed to jump on a Zoom call to flesh out details, but due to their conflicting schedules, their busy lives as recording artists and mothers to toddlers, the pair never got around to speaking much less recording a music video for the duet, which Mendona was willing to go to Mexico to make happen.

When Dulce heard the news of her passing, I was in total shock. I didnt understand why this had happened. She had a 1-year-old, I have a 1-year-old. As a touring artist and a mother, this impacted me greatly. And it was difficult for me to process everything that had happened just months before she died.

She looked for answers to questions she would never get. I finally understood that she had left this unique gift. She was a huge fan of RBD and even a fan of my character Roberta on the telenovela Rebelde, so maybe she said yes because of that. She didnt need to collaborate with me, she was at the peak of her career. So, it wasnt only a professional move for her, there was also a personal motive.

After speaking with her team to discuss whether or not the collab should be released, all parties agreed to share one of her latest collaborations with her fans.

Amid all this pain, she left us this gift that I want to share with all the love in the world, respect and honor for her. I especially want to share this song with her fans, everyone that loved her. And everyone that had yet to discover her because she was a woman with a beautiful voice but even a more beautiful heart.

Mendona was on her way to perform in the city of Caratinga when her plane crashed. All five passengers, including the planes crew, lost their lives in the accident. With more than eight million listeners on Spotify and more than 22 million subscribers on YouTube, the folk singer-songwriter, who began writing songs at the age of 12, had become one of biggest exponents of popular Brazilian music.

The Print Center Announces Multipart Project Of New Work By Carmen Winant – Broadway World

The Print Center (TPC) will present A Brand New End: Survival and Its Pictures, a solo photography-based exhibition of new work by Carmen Winant as part of a four-component project developed by the artist through intensive research - a hallmark of her category-defying practice. The project incorporates historical and contemporary representations of oppression, liberation, and self-expression drawn from the archive of Women In Transition (WIT), the 50-year-old Philadelphia organization providing services to empower people with the knowledge, support, and ability to thrive beyond domestic abuse/intimate partner violence and substance abuse.

Winant's project highlights the power of print (photography and printmaking) in representing how women view themselves and how photography can serve as a tool in the struggle for individual autonomy and self-representation. Through its expansive consideration of image making, domestic violence, and the larger feminist movement, this project critically explores how women are supported in achieving personal agency with the help of organizations like WIT. On view at TPC from April 14 to July 16, 2022, with a related artist book release in October 2022, the exhibition is organized by Ksenia Nouril, PhD, Jensen Bryan Curator at The Print Center.

A Brand New End: Survival and Its Pictures is supported by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage.

Winant, who was raised in Philadelphia, is translating, reproducing, and re-contextualizing imagery from WIT's archive into artworks that will be installed in TPC galleries. Artistic interventions in public spaces will unfold in numerous public transportation sites around the city. The artist book builds on the legacy of feminist publications and printed materials as vehicles for expeditious and accessible dissemination of information. Public programs, some of which are organized in collaboration with WIT, are an integral component of the project, which aims to illuminate the often-invisible experiences of women and feminist strategies for survival, revolt, and self-determination.

The Print Center Executive Director Elizabeth Spungen said, "Carmen Winant is one of the most incisive artists of her generation. Her work is nothing short of radical - a bold provocation that pushes boundaries and reexamines feminist tropes. A natural extension of her photography-based practice, A Brand New End: Survival and Its Pictures is an exploration of ways in which survivors of domestic violence and substance abuse have pushed through societal and personal burdens to realize self-actualization. We are honored to present this multi-part project in partnership with Women In Transition and thank Corinne Lagermasini, WIT's Executive Director, who is an essential thought-partner for the project."

Since March 2020, Winant has been exploring WIT's extensive archive (a unique resource among such service organizations) that includes publications, how-to guides, manuals, staged photographs for instruction, newspaper clippings, and ephemera. The archive provides an extraordinary window into feminism and the women's liberation movement that began in the 1970s, when WIT was established to help newly divorced women learn strategies for navigating and thriving in a new world. Founded as a multiracial feminist collective by women for women, it evolved over the decades as new issues commanded attention, such as abuse by partners and drug addiction. Surfacing these themes of intergeneration exchange, Winant's project considers what has changed and how the ongoing deconstruction of patriarchal systems of oppression can influence feminist ideals today.

Nouril said, "As an artist, Carmen is constantly challenging herself, examining issues through the lens of feminism and personal agency. In WIT's archive, she discovered a trove of material and, thanks to our colleagues and partners, plumbed aspects of feminist history and its representation including empowerment strategies. Centering on photographic works, mixed-media collage, public interventions, and installations, her practice is uniquely suited for this project. The overall outcome our visitors will encounter is a compendium of Carmen's research, artistic manifestation of her investigations, and current resources. The project is particularly urgent at a time when COVID-19 has brought the impacts of intimate partner abuse to the forefront."

In her practice, Winant gravitates towards how others use found images. For the exhibition, Winant is focusing on several categories of material including images of painted t-shirts from WIT's participation in the Clothesline Project, 35mm slides, newspaper clippings and "job cards" from the mid to late 1970s.

Images of some 200 t-shirts from WIT's Clothesline Project - active between 1996 and the early 2000s - will be displayed as projections. This initiative invited survivors of domestic abuse to create t-shirt designs that reflected on their path to safety. The title of the exhibition is inspired by one of these t-shirts, whose handwritten text reads, "Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now and make a brand new end."

The dozens of 35mm slides on display were used in WIT training exercises, tutorials, and news stories about the organization. These images, staged by WIT staff, depict self-defense methods, what to pack when leaving an abusive relationship, obtaining legal services, conducting job searches, and accessing counseling.

Some 100 newspaper clippings of stories about domestic abuse will be displayed recto and verso, highlighting their accidental juxtapositions with random news stories and advertisements. The result is a series of snapshots of moments in time.

The 40 "job cards" created by WIT feature images clipped from books and magazines to showcase various professions that women could consider while transitioning into the job market. The laminated cards comprise cut-out images mounted on multi-colored construction paper, with an explanation of what the job entails on the back. Another installation in the galleries includes five publications emblematic of WIT's mission, such as The New Woman's Survival Guide and Women in Transition: A Feminist Handbook on Separation and Divorce.

The public intervention further closes the space between art and information sharing. Rather than displaying examples of Winant's photographs or promoting the exhibition, the artist-designed posters will incorporate infographics and texts that raise awareness of issues around domestic violence and resources available.

The artist book is a stand-alone artwork created in collaboration with graphic design studio Common Name. It will include materials from the exhibition, new images, and research, as well as contributions from Winant, Nouril, sociologists, survivors, art historians, poets, and WIT staff.

The roster of public programs - in-person and online - will be announced in early 2022.
