P.E.I.'s finance minister has promised profits from online gaming forwarded by Atlantic Lottery Corporation will be spent on mental health and addictions, as she answers questions about a recent deal authorizing an online casino.

In the legislature earlier this week, Liberal MLA Robert Henderson tabled an ALC business plan that pitched an online casino as a great opportunity during the pandemic. It was a plan the province eventually bought into.

Finance Minister Darlene Compton responded by saying ALC's online casino is about providing Islanders with a safe place to play, posing an alternative to less secure sites based overseas.

Compton went further in the legislature Thursday, promising to set aside the profits, which are now going to general revenue, for a specific purpose

"We can earmark the amount that is coming from online gaming and put it directly to mental health and addictions," said Compton.

"I want to assure Islanders, it's not about making money for the province, it's not about exploiting Islanders, it's about using the funds that are accessed through Atlantic Lottery Corporation to P.E.I."

Compton acknowledged gambling addiction is an issue in the province, with about two per cent of Islanders having a problem with gambling.

The finance minister did not specify whether her promise would necessarily mean an increase in funding for mental health and addictions.

We are trying to build and introduce PlayUp to Devils fans. They are really interesting to us because they are the No. 1 fantasy operator in Australia. On April 15, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey signed a bill to legalize sports betting in the state. Shortly after, FanDuel and the Phoenix Suns announced a multi-year partnership that includes a FanDuel retail sportsbook inside the Phoenix Suns Arena.

Unfair advantage, not at all. New Jersey and Pennsylvania were out first (with sports betting). If I could dream it up all over again maybe we would go backwards. I think having the books is an amazing opportunity. In my business, its about putting thousands of people in a venue where everyone is cheering for an outcome. Arenas have 100-150 dark days a year. People dont come to our venues unless there is a reason to come. Having the sportsbooks, which is not only a great revenue opportunity for the teams, it brings people to your venue.

Of course, mobile betting is available in New Jersey so fans can simply bet on their phones while they are at the Prudential Center. Davis says there are ways that areas can still fill dark days despite not having a sportsbook with kiosks and tellers. He could envision arenas hosting watch parties for the NCAA tournament and big UFC events.

Look at the success of the Meadowlands (FanDuel Sportsbook). People want to congregate together and have a vested interest in the entertainment, said Davis. Now, you have an opportunity with 10k-15k people at an arena, its amazing. Thats the next wave for us. Thats what we are looking at doing, bringing people in for non-Devils events to watch games.

Michigan iGames didnt get going until this January. So Pennsylvania gamblers had a long head start on creating revenue for the commonwealth. Although for the second straight month, Michigans online gambling revenue ($95.1 million in March) rivaled Pennsylvanias ($98 million), even though that states online casinos launched in July 2019.

The numbers from the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) released today show the states online gambling gross receipts for March total $95.1 million. In addition, the states sports betting receipts reached $32.3 million meaning online betting in the more general sense brought $127.4 million into state coffers.

Adjusted to deduct bettors free play incentives, Michigans actual online revenue in March was $107.7 million. So it remains behind Pennsylvanias $124 million, but is catching up quickly.

During the shorter month of February, Michigans adjusted $75 million in online casino revenue also rivaledPennsylvanias $78 million.

Its possible Michigans online gamblers may soon help speed past revenue from Pennsylvanias online casino players, despite Michigans lower population. Pennsylvania houses nearly 13 million people, while Michigan has just shy of 10 million.

In addition to possibly helping licensee MotorCity Casino be more competitive with MGM Grand Detroit, the IPO could add confusion about Odawa casinos skin, Fox Bet. As part of the negotiations with media partner Fox before the IPO, primary FanDuel owner Flutter may be trying to merge Fox Bet with FanDuel to eliminate some competition.

Meanwhile, for the sake of argument, lets take a look at that scenario if it had played out in March. FanDuels licensee MotorCity and Fox Bets Odawa adjusted revenues for March added together are $29 million. MGM Grands BetMGM brought in $31 million. All of thats interesting, but DraftKings would still reign at $35 million with Bay Mills Indian Community.

Even appointed officials arent immune to sports puns. Kalm credits March Madness basketball with adding a bounce to the sports betting handle. Bets received increased 19.1% from February to March.

In dollar terms, handle increased by $60 million, month over month. Here too, we can look at the daily average to confirm that the gains are real. Handle for March worked out to an average of $11.6 million per day, which is again a7%improvement over Februarys pace of $10.8 million.

However, Marchs $359.5 million handle isnt the only way to analyze Michigans sports gambling prowess. Revenue is the other piece of the puzzle.

There too, Michigan showed that its got game, posting $32.3 million in gross sports betting receipts. A big chunk of that got paid out in promotional free bets however, leaving $19 million total after that adjustment.

On that front at least, Pennsylvania performed far better in March, with $26 million in sports betting revenue.

However, Michigan is really only competing against itself. Considering the state saw negative revenue from this vertical in January, sports betting is doing far better than it did straight out of the gate.

Much of the buzz around the prospect of online gaming and sports betting in Connecticut has centered on the revenue it could generate for the state while enabling the state and the casino-owning Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan tribes to keep pace with competitors.

Bills before the legislature would authorize the tribes to provide retail sports wagering at their respective casinos Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun as well as provide online sports betting and online casino games on applications anywhere in the state.
