Park City could turn into ‘Aspen on steroids’ with a second Olympics – The Park Record

Posted: October 13, 2022 at 1:26 pm

Jeff Lee, a Jeremy Ranch resident, lived in Salt Lake City during the 2002 Winter Olympics, and supports the efforts for this region to host a second Games.

But Lee has concerns about the prospects of another Olympics impacting the affordability of the Park City area, where housing is already the most expensive in the state. Lee was one of the attendees at a recent gathering at the Park City Library that was part of a series of events billed as community conversations about an Olympics bid.

In an interview at the event, Lee said he is worried another Olympics would lead to more properties becoming vacation homes in the Park City area. A Games could exacerbate longtime Park City challenges, he said, explaining that he is concerned about young peoples ability to afford to live in Park City in the future.

I think its going to only worsen that problem, that problem of affordability, living in Summit County, Park City, he said, adding, Its going to be Aspen on steroids.

The comments by Lee seem to encapsulate some of the concerns of a wider swath of the Park City community nearly four years after the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee selected Salt Lake City as the nations bid city for a future Winter Olympics. The Park City area would have a major role in a Games, including competition venues identified at Park City Mountain Resort, Deer Valley Resort and the Utah Olympic Park.

The gatherings, which continue in late October and early November with online sessions, are some of the first organized opportunities for people to offer opinions about the Olympic efforts in a formal setting centered on the Games since the late-2018 selection of Salt Lake City as the nations bid city.

The recent event at the library was the sixth such gathering. Organizers said the events typically drew between 15 and 25 people each. City Hall and the County Courthouse tapped the Park City-based Mountain Mediation Center to manage the gatherings.

Mountain Mediation Center prohibited The Park Record from taking notes during the event at the library. A representative from the organization said the gatherings will be summarized in a report that will be provided to Park City and Summit County officials by the middle of November.

One of the issues broached at the library gathering was the slow times for business during the 2001-2002 ski season before and after the Games that February. The group did not seem to dwell on any one topic and instead repeatedly moved between subjects. The group included people from Park City and the Snyderville Basin.

Leaders in Park City and Summit County for months anticipated some sort of organized public outreach about the Olympic bid, and the current series of gatherings is expected to be followed by additional opportunities to provide input in some fashion.

The International Olympic Committee is expected to select the host of the Winter Olympics of 2030 sometime in 2023. Salt Lake City sees the 2030 event or the Games four years later as possibilities.

France wants Joel Embiid for national team in 2024 Olympics – ESPN

Posted: at 1:26 pm

HENDERSON, Nev. -- Joel Embiid has two choices: the red, white and blue of the U.S., or the blue, white and red of France.

An Olympic medal might hinge on his decision.

France is still hopeful that Embiid -- the reigning NBA scoring champion -- will choose to wear its colors for the 2024 Paris Olympics even though he recently became an American citizen, national team coach Vincent Collet said Thursday.

Embiid, the Philadelphia 76ers star, may choose to play internationally for the U.S. or France, but not both. It was widely presumed that he would play for France at the Paris Games and possibly even next year's FIBA Basketball World Cup in the Philippines, until Embiid revealed last week that he now has American citizenship as well.

1 Related

"Now he has both nationalities, and he has to choose one basketball nationality, which is not the same," Collet told The Associated Press. "So, that is a choice. Nobody can do anything to change it."

Embiid told AP last week that it's too early to think about a decision. By rule, he will eventually have to declare a choice to FIBA, the sport's international governing body, if he decides that he wants to play at the Olympics or World Cup.

France is the reigning Olympic silver medalist and is planning to have a team featuring Rudy Gobert, Evan Fournier, Nicolas Batum -- and, quite likely, top NBA draft prospect Victor Wembanyama -- at the Paris Games. France's plan is to essentially take what will be its Olympic roster to the World Cup next year.

Without Embiid, that French core has been extremely formidable. On top of the 2021 silver in Tokyo, France won bronze at the 2019 World Cup and silver again at this year's European championships.

With Embiid, that group would figure to be even better. Collet said Boris Diaw, the general manager of the French national team, has been in contact with Embiid to discuss options.

"I know he met some of our players to discuss," Collet said. "I think he should play with us. But we will see. We will respect his decision whatever it is."

Embiid was born in Cameroon and also holds French citizenship. His girlfriend Anne de Paula is Brazilian -- their son is American -- he went to high school in Florida and he played college basketball at Kansas.

The five-time NBA All-Star and four-time All-NBA selection has spent his entire pro career with Philadelphia, averaging 26.0 points in his first six seasons and a career-best 30.6 points on his way to the scoring crown last season.

The Top 7 Olympic Winter Sports That Didnt Make the Cut – SnowBrains

The Winter Olympic Games are not even 100 years old. The first Winter Olympics were held in 1924 in Chamonix, France, and in those 98 years some disciplines and events have come and gone. For the 2028 games in Milan/Cortina, Italy, a new discipline was added with dual moguls, taking it to a total of 16 disciplines and 116 separate events. The first Winter Olympics consisted of only nine disciplines (and 16 events):

Curling was discontinued straight after the Chamonix Olympics but then was re-introduced in 1988 at the Calgary Olympics. This led us to dig a little deeper and take a look into other Olympic disciplines that either have been discontinued or were introduced as demonstration events but never made the cut. Some disciplines, like dog sledding or synchronized ice skating, you probably have heard of.

We wanted to compile a list of the more unusual winter sport disciplines that had demonstration eventsat the Winter Olympics but were not taken up, or events that were discontinued. Here are the 7 most interesting disciplines:

Military Patrol was a precursor to what we know now as biathlon. This event was a medal event in 1924 and a demonstration event in 1928, 1936, and 1948 after which it was discontinued. It was not only a combination of cross-country skiing and rifle shooting but also had a patrol component, where four-man teams, including one officer, embarked on a 19-mile (30km) ski race. The course had to be completed by the entire patrol and competitors had to wear military uniforms, backpacks, and carry weapons. A total of six patrol teams from Finland, France, Italy, Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Switzerland set off in three-minute intervals. The Swiss team won the event with Finland in second and France in third place, while Italy and Poland withdrew due to inclement weather. The discipline appeared as a demonstration event in the following three Winter Olympics but did not score official results and was then entirely discontinued. Its closest relative in the modern day is probably the 12.5 mile (20km) biathlon race.

Its not a discipline as such but rather an overall award for accomplishments in the previous four years for alpine accomplishments. It was awarded from 1924-1936 and then discontinued. The 1924 medal went to the participants of the 1922 Mount Everest expedition led by General Charles Granville Bruce and his second-in-command, Lieutenant Colonel Edward Strutt, along with noted climber George Mallory for their outstanding feats on the unsuccessful attempt to reach the summit. The prize included posthumous medals for seven Sherpas and a Nepalese soldier who tragically died in an avalanche. The 1932 prize went to the German brothers Franz and Tony Schmidt who were the first to climb the North Face of the Matterhorn. The 1936 medal went to Switzerlands mountaineering couple Gnter and Hettie Dyhrenfurth for their Himalayan exploration. Hettie broke the record for a womans highest climb by reaching an altitude of 7,500m when they climbed Sia Kangri. Her record was unbroken for 21 years.

Bandy was supposed to be included in the inaugural 1924 Chamonix Olympics, but there was a fallout between Sweden and the International Olympic Committee and the sport was not included. It was finally demonstrated in 1952 during the Oslo Olympic Games. Bandy is essentially ice hockey with a ball instead of a puck. Also known as Russian Hockey, Bandy has a lot of players in Scandinavian countries and Russia. Bandy has 11 players on a field 3.5 times larger than the NHL field. The larger ice rink enables higher speeds. Bandy players can reach a top speed of 30 mph and hit the ball over 137.5mph (220kph).

Speed Skiing had its demonstration moment at the 1992 Winter Games in Albertville, France. Gold and silver in the event went to French skiers Michael Prufer and Philippe Goitschel respectively, while Bronze went to American Jeffrey Hamilton. The winning speed was a mind-boggling 142.5 mph (229.3kph). The event was unfortunately overshadowed by the death of Swiss speed skier Nicolas Bochatay who hit a snow-groomer in a warm-up run on the morning of the finals. He had been ranked 13th after the qualifiers. The world record in speed skiing is held by Italian Ivan Origione at 158.4mph

The Winter Pentathlon was a demonstration event at the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland. Similar to the Summer Game Pentathlon which also has a fencing, shooting, and equestrian element, the Winter Pentathlon has a military theme to it. The event was comprised of five disciplines, cross-country skiing, shooting, downhill skiing, fencing, and horse riding. Gold, silver, and bronze went to Sweden. The Swedes were also dominant in the Summer Olympics Modern Pentathlon. Silver medal winner Captain William Grut went on to win the Gold medal at the London Summer Olympics that same year.

Skijoring was a demonstration at the 1928 Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland, where the race is still an annual attraction. Skijoring involves a skier being pulled behind a horse and is a timed race. It can be set up to include obstacles or jumps but the demonstration event on the frozen Lake St Moritz was on a flat race track. Skijoring originated in Scandinavia and unlike similar races found in America involves no rider. The horse is steered by the skier from behind. First, second and third place at the demonstration event went to Switzerland.

Certainly a spectator favorite, ski ballet was a demonstration event at the 1988 Olympics in Calgary, Canada, and the 1992 Olympics in Albertville, France. The discipline was also known as Acroski and was an official FIS Freestyle discipline. It combined spins, turns, flips, and rolls, often with the use of poles, on skis in a rhythmic-sport-like choreography to music. The discipline was a judged event. Unfortunately, the sport did not make the cut, unlike mogul skiing, which was the other Freestyle discipline demonstrated in 1992.

Let us know if you think we should bring any of these disciplines back!

Giannis Antetokounmpo: It will be amazing to be the flag bearer in the 2024 Olympics – Eurohoops

Posted: at 1:26 pm

By Eurohoops team/ info@eurohoops.net

Giannis Antetokounmpo is preparing for the upcoming season with the Milwaukee Bucks, but part of his mind is still on the Greek national team.

Speaking to COSMOTE TV, the Greek television rights holder of the NBA, while in Abhu Dabi for the exhibition games against the Hawks, Giannis explained his mentality going forward concerning the national team: We have to go step by step. No matter the result in Eurobasket, I think the national team improved this year on every aspect and from now on, the goal doesnt change.

The Greek Freak is referring to the fact that the Greek national team, a two-time European champion and silver medal winner in the FIBA World Cup, has won its last medal, a bronze, back in Eurobasket 2009.

Giannis clearly states that one of his goals remains a medal with the Greek national team: We have two upcoming chances in the FIBA World Cup and hopefully in the Olympics. We built something special, and this jersey is heavy. I have played for 10 years now with the Bucks, but the national team jersey is different. You may wake up with bigger anxiety but you know you can give joy to millions. I never felt so much love in my life from all over the world who engaged with the national team and followed us everywhere we went. From Madrid for the prep games to Milan and Berlin for the tournament. As I already wrote on my social media, I fell in love with the game again this summer.

With Greece opening by custom the Olympic parade of athletes, Giannis can be the first to enter the Olympic Stadium in Paris in 2024, as the flag bearer of Greece, an honor that in the past had for their countries basketball icons like Yao Ming, Manu Ginobili Pau Gasol, and Dirk Nowitzki.

It will be amazing to be a flag bearer in the 2024 Olympics but there are steps we have to take to get there, said Giannis.

Speaking about the Bucks, the two-time former MVP added: I am well physically, as well as mentally. We must be ready for the season, hope we stay healthy and do well with the Bucks. I believe that every year five or six teams have a chance for the title and we are one of them. It is very good that we kept the same core of players, we are close and know each other. The most important thing is to be healthy.

Carmel teen climbing toward his 2024 Olympics dream – WTHR

Ben Jennings, a student at Butler University, says his one goal is to reach for gold at the 2024 Games in Paris.

INDIANAPOLIS The Summer Olympics are still two years away, but a teenager from Carmel is already hard at work to make Team USA.

Ben Jennings is currently a student at Butler University and says his one goal is to reach for gold at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

In between classes, you'll find Jennings scrambling up a wall. He makes it look easy.

"I love it," Jennings said. "It's so creative. It's a different sport than you're ever going to find. The community, the friendships I have made from being on a team and being a member of the community are friendships I will have the rest of my life."

He's a modern day Spider-Man. He can scale a 45-foot wall in less than six seconds.

"As quickly and as cleanly as possible is the goal," Jennings said. "Consistency is a big issue for most people. That's why the fastest person usually never wins because they slip and they get passed. The cleanest person is who takes the win."

He took up the sport just a few years ago, after a visit to his uncle's house in West Virginia.

"I was in between sports at the time, so he was like, 'Why don't you try climbing?' Then, we came home and came to the gym and I've been here pretty much ever since," Jennings said.

He caught on quickly. Now, he's competing across the country. He's ranked third in the nation, 11th in the world, and he has a shot at making the 2024 Olympic team.

"It would be a dream come true, honestly," he said.

His mom is there to encourage him.

"I think he can do it," Sandy Chouinard said. "He has to work hard. There is lots of competition, and he has to stay focused, keep practicing."

Day after day, Jennings climbs toward his dream.

"I have always been very athletic and known I have wanted to do something to, like, create a legacy for me one day. I found this sport," Jennings said.

The climb to the top isn't easy, but Jennings appears to be on the fast track.

IOC Vincent discusses esports in the Olympics: "We are planning the first festival of virtual sports and gaming." – InvenGlobal

Posted: at 1:26 pm

The Olympics is one of the biggest sports festivals in the world that represents traditional sports. From the first event back in 1896, its history spans over 100 years, which makes the Olympics value and tradition solid.

However, there has been some change coming in the Olympics. Last year, they held the Olympic Virtual Series, which was an event based on virtual games. There were five events within the series baseball, cycling, rowing, sailing, and motor racing. According to IESF, there were 1.2 million viewers for the last Olympic Virtual Series.

The Olympic movement is continuing to attempt to connect with esports. How much has it progressed? How will it go in the future? Inven spoke with Vincent Pereira, the head of virtual sports in the International Olympic Committee, and listened to the thoughts the Olympics have on esports.

2021 saw your inaugural virtual competition, the Olympic Virtual Series. Was it successful? How did the fans react?

The Olympic Virtual Series (OVS) was launched in summer 2021 and featured virtual competitions in sports such as baseball, cycling, rowing, sailing, and motor racing. It was a success, with more than 250,000 people participating across both the qualifying and finals events. The OVS reflects the mission we have supporting the development of virtual sports. This was a good start for us, and we have ambitions to continue to do more in the coming years.

What are the future plans for the OVS or other IOC esports initiatives?

Following the success of the OVS last year, we are building on this by planning the first festival of virtual sports and gaming. It will take place next year and will showcase the best of virtual sports hybrid and simulated sports games, plus esports that align with the Olympic values. It is about celebrating and exploring the best of virtual sports, across technology exhibitions, show matches, panel discussions, education sessions, etc. This is our focus for now.

Esports is a different concept from traditional sport, but there are still some things in common. What does the IOC plan to do?

We agree with you. Esports and sports are two distinct competitions, and its right to treat them as such, but there are, of course, some synergies. The IOC supports all different types of competition, and we believe exploring bringing together two of the best competitive communities the Olympic Movement and esports - can potentially lead to exciting developments in global competition.

There are many areas where sports can support esports for example, the Olympic Movement has tools and resources in areas such as competitor development. If there are things we can do to support this development, were happy to explore doing so.

Since traditional sports are mostly physical, some people dont think that esports can ever become real sports. What is your opinion on this?

As I said, sports and esports are two distinct forms of competition; therefore, we dont think it is necessary to try and compare them in this way. There are, of course, areas where the two meet, such as Zwift, where physical activity is combined with virtual technologies. It is this area of virtual sports that we are most interested in developing within the Olympic Movement.

There are people who think that traditional sports or the IOC are just using the esports scene for their own development. Do you have anything to say about this?

Supporting the development of virtual forms of sports, and connecting with the gaming community, are key areas of focus for us, laid out in the Olympic Agenda 2020+5. First, its about how we can bring together the Olympic Movement and the esports communities to explore and collaborate in the future. We believe there is potential for exciting developments for global competitions and creating new opportunities for players and fans. For us, it makes sense to keep up with the developments in how people compete, and it is also one of the ways we can keep connected to young people.

The Olympic Virtual Series featured some virtual sports, but what esports fans want to see is the major esports titles such as League of Legends at the Olympics. Do you think this will be possible?

For now, we are focusing on virtual and simulated sports competition. This is why we are promoting sports games that are linked to our International Federations (IFs). The partnership between the International Baseball Federation and Konami is a good example of this. Our mission is to support the growth of virtual sports within the Olympic Movement, so this is why well create new opportunities for IFs, publishers, and fans to be involved in virtual sports and see how we can work together.
