Hyundai Heavy’s Hi-Float Floating Wind Foundation Gets Bureau Veritas Nod – Offshore WIND

Posted: December 1, 2021 at 8:40 am

Bureau Veritas has delivered an Approval in Principle (AiP) to South Koreas Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) for its design and development of the Hi-Float floating offshore wind turbine foundation.

Hi-Float is designed to support a 10 MW wind turbine with proven semi-submersible and mooring technology, Bureau Veritas said.

A passive ballast system is said to ensure that risk is kept to a minimum during offshore operations. The good performance of Hi-Float in offshore environment was verified through numerical analysis and wave basin model testing.

Bureau Veritas is proud of the successful completion of this AiP with Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd for the design of its Hi-Float floating offshore wind turbine foundation, Alex Gregg-Smith, Executive Vice President for Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore, said.

This announcement demonstrates the importance of this technology, which will enable the development of future clean energy with zero carbon emissions, while managing risks of floating offshore wind farm development with efficient and safe operation of large scale wind turbines. We are also confident that our cooperation on technology development will lead to further successes to both HHI and BV within the developing renewable energy and floating offshore wind technology sectors, which will play a major role in the fight against climate change.

The certificate was delivered to Seon Mook Lim, Executive Vice President of HHI, by Christophe Capitant, Chief Country Executive of BV Korea, at a ceremony hosted by HHI Offshore & Industrial Division in Ulsan, South Korea.

Obtaining the AiP for these innovative floating offshore wind turbine foundations is a meaningful technological milestone that will enable our solutions to contribute to the global decarbonisation effort, Seon Mook Lim said.

In addition, Hi-Float provides higher productivity considering the construction yard infrastructure and efficiency of marine operations. These projects are part of our continuous endeavors and commitment to a sustainable future that is aligned with HHI Groups ESG vision, Beyond Blue Forward to Green. We also promise that HHI Group will encourage new value creation to lead the market, responding to customers desire for the achievement of net zero emissions.

While wind turbine technologies have now had time to mature, the floating foundations that provide the base for floating offshore wind turbines are still going through stages of development, Bureau Veritas said. Coupling wind turbines aerodynamic loads with floaters hydrodynamic ocean loads also represents a complex challenge. To address this, it is not only necessary to apply lessons learned from the offshore wind and oil and gas sectors, but also to work with partners who can provide a holistic view of a floating offshore wind technology and project, the certification society said.

Posted: at 8:40 am

VELIZY-VILLACOUBLAY, France--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dassault Systmes (Euronext Paris: FR0014003TT8, DSY.PA) (Paris:DSY) today announced that its 3DEXPERIENCE platform was used to develop the high-performance boat Trimaran SVR-Lazartigue, which finished second in the 15th edition of the Transat Jacques Vabre sailing competition. On November 7, 2021 just three months after its initial launch into water the Trimaran SVR-Lazartigue left the starting line of the Transat Jacques Vabre in Normandy for its first offshore race, arriving in Martinique on November 23 after completing a 7,500-mile journey across the Atlantic.

Designed and assembled by MerConcept, which contracted the whole project, the Trimaran SVR-Lazartigue belongs to the new generation of flying boats in which aerodynamics is as important as hydrodynamics. The development of new technologies in all areas of design makes the Trimaran SVR-Lazartigue a unique and revolutionary boat.

In particular, MerConcept was able to benefit from the power of Dassault Systmes' 3DEXPERIENCE platform, distributed by Dassault Systmes business partner CT Mer Forte. Using the platforms "Winning Bid for Sea" industry solution experience on the cloud, MerConcept created a virtual twin of the boat and performed high-fidelity simulations that enabled it to optimize the boats aerodynamics and significantly improve its performance. MerConcept used the "Sea Boat Builder" industry solution experience to carry out the design of the boats systems.

The efficiency of the 3DEXPERIENCE platform enabled us to significantly optimize our performance during the study and design phases, said Antoine Gautier, Trimaran SVR-Lazartigue Director, MerConcept.

With each new sailing race, we are able to witness new technical feats that enable boats of different classes to go faster, with unprecedented strength and resilience, said Franois-Xavier Dumez, Vice President, Marine & Offshore Industry, Dassault Systmes. Our 3DEXPERIENCE platform and the virtual world make these sophisticated technological advances possible. We warmly congratulate the Trimaran SVR-Lazartigue team and MerConcept on an impressive performance in their first offshore race.

Valmont SM to Produce Offshore Wind Turbine Towers at Port of Esbjerg | Offshore Wind – Offshore WIND

Posted: at 8:40 am

Valmont SM, a manufacturer of offshore wind turbine towers, has signed an agreement with the Port Esbjerg for an exclusive option to have the port build a large production facility for wind turbine towers.

The location allows the company to shorten the distance from production to erection of new wind turbines significantly and will provide it a competitive edge, according to Valmont SM CEO Niels Brix.

The Port of Esbjerg said the agreement fitted in perfectly with the newly announced expansion of the port as well as the growing demand for wind energy and the ports ambitions to contribute even more to the green transition of European energy supply.

In September, the Danish port was given the green light for the expansion by the local council and plans to have it completed by 2026.

The approval covers the establishment of over 500,000 square metres of additional harbour area and another 76,000 square metres of sea, while a section of 170,000 square metres will be deepened to create new navigation channels and fairways.

In 2026, 350 metres of new quay will be ready for use. The quay will be 50 metres wide and will be equipped with a 30-metre-wide double loading platform for Ro-Ro vessels.

In total, the expansion will add 750,000 square metres of extra space to the port area in Esbjerg.

If we want to remain an inspiration and a leading international hub for offshore wind, we need more space. We are therefore delighted to have received the go-ahead for a 750,000 m2 port expansion. This will enable us to warehouse more wind turbines and thus to contribute even more towards meeting the EUs ambitious offshore wind targets, said Dennis Jul Pedersen, CEO of the Port of Esbjerg.

BW Ideol Acquires Ownership Stake in EolMed Floating Wind Farm – Offshore WIND

Posted: at 8:40 am

BW Ideol has signed an agreement to acquire a 5 per cent ownership in the 30 MW EolMed floating wind pilot project offshore Frances Mediterranean coast.

The project is progressing towards final investment decision (FID) with an expected start of construction in early 2022, BW Ideol said.

The floating wind farm, fully consented in February of this year, will comprise three Vestas 10 MW wind turbines mounted on BW Ideols Damping Pool floating foundations and installed 15 kilometres off Gruissan, France, in water depths of around 60 metres.

The project is owned by Qair andFrench energy major and oil giantTotalEnergies, which bought a 20 per cent stake in October 2020.

For BW Ideol, this investment confirms its dual-track growth strategy as a co-developer of floating wind projects and as a floating foundation EPCI provider, according to the company.

By licensing our floater technology, providing design and engineering services and becoming a co-shareholder of the project, we are both executing our long-term growth and value creation strategy as well as strengthening our project portfolio and our unique access to a valuable return of experience, said Paul de la Gurivire, CEO of BW Ideol.

As reported earlier this year after BW Ideol was established and set to list at the Oslo Stock Exchange, the company had set out an overarching goal of becoming a long-term owner of floating wind assets, as well as a strategy that includes two approaches: co-development of projects in joint ventures and using its EPCI and maintenance capabilities with the possibility to become a lessor of floating wind assets.

The company said that developing, building and operating floating wind farms in joint ventures was the main strategy for core markets where BW Ideol has a strong position. In markets with strong developers, the company plans to tap into BW Offshores FPSO experience and serve as an EPCI contractor for floaters and offer maintenance services, with a possibility for converting this into a leasing model.

U.S. offshore industry group alleges wind developers violating Jones Act – WorkBoat

Posted: at 9:27 pm

Operators of a foreign-flag geotechnical survey vessel have been in violation of the Jones Act while working on a Virginia offshore wind energy project, a U.S. offshore industry group alleges in a new report.

The 264x59 vessel Geoquip Saentis, a Chinese-built, Bahamian-flagged, Swiss-owned offshore supply vesseloperated for most of 2020 and 2021 in U.S. offshore wind fields, including survey work for the Dominion Energy Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project and the Vineyard Wind project off southern New England, according to the paper by the Offshore Marine Services Association.

In the 34-page paper addressed to top Coast Guard and U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials OMSA makes specific complaints about alleged violations of the 1920 Merchant Marine Act and other laws. Also known as the Jones Act, the law requires how maritime commerce between U.S. points must be conducted by U.S.-flagged and crewed vessels.

U.S. wind power should mean U.S. jobs, said OMSA Ppesident Aaron Smith in releasing the report. Our report provides a case study of how far too often wind projects are instead creating jobs for Estonians and Romanians, while capable American mariners sit on the shore.

"Weve detailed how a foreign company by their own admission used a Chinese-built vessel with foreign crew members to transport cargo within U.S. waters. That's illegal.

A spokesman for Dominion Energy said the company is reviewing the OMSA report. Operator Geoquip Marine replied in a lengthy statement, disputing among other points the OMSA claim about Jones Act cargo violations.

One key allegation in the paper is that seafloor soil samples transported by a foreign-flag survey vessel to shore for testing constitute merchandise as described in the Jones Act.

Geotechnical work is ongoing all along the East Coast for planned wind projects, so the OMSA report is a signal that Jones Act complaints from U.S. offshore service providers will be a ongoing debate as they have been for years in the Gulf of Mexico oil and gas industry.

Among OMSAs complaints list:

The Geoquip Saentis has repeatedly transported and continues to transport merchandise between U.S. points, including transporting subsoil samples from points on the U.S. Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) to U.S. ports for testing. That transportation violates the Jones Act.

It has also employed a crew of Eastern European mariners without the proper documentation required by the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act (OCSLA). These mariners are paid wages far below the wages commanded by similarly situated U.S. mariners. U.S. law requires U.S. vessel operators to utilize U.S. mariners. Thus, this practice unfairly allowed the GEOQUIP SAENTIS to operate at a lower cost than U.S.-flagged vessels, which has permitted it unlawfully to obtain work reserved by the Jones Act to U.S.- flagged vessels.

The vessel appears to have repeatedly turned off or otherwise made inaccessible its Automatic Identification System (AIS) signal, a violation of U.S. law and international safety regulations.

The vessel has been in non-compliance with U.S. pollution prevention laws, resulting in its receipt of two U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Captain of the Port (COTP) orders denying entry into U.S. ports; similarly, it has been found to be an acknowledged pollution source as part of a USCG oil spill investigation.

The USCG has allowed the Geoquip Saentis to sail as an Offshore Supply Vessel despite clearly meeting the definition of a vessel a requiring a higher level of safety regulations. An allowance that would not be provided to a U.S.-flagged vessel.

Geoquip Marine responded to the OMSA paper with a detailed statement issued Tuesday:

"Geoquip Marine is the worlds largest wholly dedicated operator of specialist offshore geotechnical data acquisition, analysis and reporting assets. The company operates globally and in recent history has completed works for many of the worlds leading specialist offshore energy developers in the US, Europe, Africa and Asia. In the US this includes various well recognised individual projects working with the leading developers offshore in Virginia, New Jersey, New York and Massachusetts.

"Geoquip Marine has been invited to participate in a competitive tender for each of these contracts by the leading US developers and has then been appointed by those companies.

"As the worlds leading specialist operator focusing on this vital niche sector in a critical rapidly growing market for global energy supply, Geoquip Marine is proud that it utilises world-leading technology, employed on research vessels of the highest specification of their type.

"The company uses the most highly qualified and experienced crews available, regardless of where they originate from, to supply accurate geotechnical data for its customers. These are the primary factors in the awarding of the contracts in the competitive tenders. No other organisation can match Geoquip Marines level of wholly dedicated resources, retained knowledge, customer focus, and international experience in this highly specialised process. The critical factors are the accuracy of the data, the technical knowledge and the safe implementation of the research process.

"All Geoquip Marine research vessels meet the highest international standards of operations and all Geoquip Marine crew are highly trained and have all the necessary permissions to work, regardless of where they are in the world.

"It is wrong to insinuate that Geoquip Marine crew are hired at rates below industry standards. Geoquip Marine prioritises the crew welfare in its quest for accuracy and those crew are very well treated, very well rewarded and are given continual training to guarantee that they are able to operate to the highest standards of safety and efficiency. As a result, Geoquip Marine is renowned internationally for being an excellent employer and this is a vital factor in securing the services of the very best crew members.

"Geoquip Marine is proud to be able to boast that as a result of its exhaustive working practices it has industry-leading safety standards of any operator in its market.

"Geoquip Marine vessels do not transport cargo or merchandise. The Geoquip Saentis is an IGSV, it is dedicated to research and has world-leading drilling technology and an onboard laboratory. It collects seabed data, allowing geotechnical parameters to be derived and supporting environmental research.

"Geoquip Marine has historically relied upon the longstanding position that research work of the type that it is specifically focused on analysing the characteristics of the seabed is not covered by the provisions of the Jones Act.

"Geoquip Marine is committed to long term operations in the United States. It uses highly qualified US crew whenever possible and actively encourages US crew to apply to work on its vessels. The company recently established a US entity and is committed to investment and growth in the US, creating jobs and opportunity for American people, both onshore and offshore."

The OMSA paper is the second report issued by OMSA under its Jones Act Enforcer program, named for a former offshore supply vessel the association commissioned to conduct surveillance of foreign-flag vessels working in U.S. waters.

In the first report issued in August, OMSA described a Chinese-built, Vanuatu-flagged derrick barge called the Epic Hedron transporting merchandise in that case, oil platform jackets between points off the coast of Louisiana in violation of the Jones Act. OMSA also obtained Coast Guard reports of safety and pollution violations involving the vessel.
