Canon launches new Oceania Grants Program | Voxy.co.nz – Voxy

Posted: June 5, 2017 at 7:51 am

On World Environment Day and ahead of International Day of Cooperatives this Saturday, Canon Oceania is excited to announce that applications for their revised 2017 Canon Grants Program - Inspiring Tomorrow, are now open!

Inspiring Tomorrow, an extension of Canons Environmental Grants Program, is encouraging all educational, community and environmental groups who are passionate about making a difference to both societal and environmental issues in their communities to apply.

Canon New Zealand are offering three grants of $5,000 worth of Canon equipment, ranging from digital

compact and DSLR cameras, to binoculars, printers and multi-function devices.

Winners will be selected based on the environmental, educational and social merits of their submission, the positive impact their project will have on the community and the importance of Canon products in ensuring its success.

Kim Conner, CEO of Canon New Zealand says that we are thrilled to announce the launch of our new grants program - Inspiring Tomorrow, bringing to life our corporate philosophy of Kyosei, living and working together for the common good.

"This year we are excited to be able to broaden the Grants program and offer a helping hand in addressing the social issues within our community. Inspiring Tomorrow aims to recognise the organisations that are making a positive impact in our own backyard and help support the growth of their projects through our technology. We encourage anyone who is part of a social, educational or environmental project to apply," says Conner.

Last years winners, the Motutapu Restoration Trust, Otanewainuku Kiwi Trust and Hobsonville Primary School were awarded for the uniqueness of their projects and positive impact they are having on the environment and their community.

Liz Brooks, Manager at the Motutapu Restoration Trust, says that their volunteers have been using their new Canon products almost daily. Of the Canon product received, their Canon 10x30IS binoculars have been used for identifying both birds and weeds. The EOS 750D with EF-S 18-55mm lens has been vital in bird monitoring and recording release events; and the Canon LV-WX320 Projector has been a key resource for training volunteers, and other conservation groups in their seminar room.

"All in all, the Motutapu Restoration Trust could not have fitted out its seminar room, office and volunteers with such state of the art equipment without Canons help. This win has allowed us to do more, and be more effective, in our mission of saving Aucklands ancient island sanctuary," says Brooks.

This year the grants will be awarded under the following categories:

New Zealand:

- 1 x Environmental Grant - $5,000 - 1 x Education/School Grant - $5,000 - 1 x Community/Social Grant - $5,000

Applications close on Friday 4th August 2017 with the winners announced by Thursday 31st August 2017.

To apply for a grant, entrants should fill in the application form here and entrants can post an image that showcases their initiative with the hashtags #InspiringTomorrow, #CanonGrantsProgram and @canon.nz.

Riot Games Oceania inks deal with Twitter – Dot Esports

Posted: June 1, 2017 at 10:58 pm

Twitter is partnering with Riot Games Oceania division to livestream the inaugural League of Legends : League of Origin tournament, the social media service announced. Taking place June 3 to 4 from the ESL Studios in Sydney, Australia, the tournament will set four regions against each other.

Twitter has worked closely with League developer Riot before. During its All-Star event in Los Angeles Dec. 10 to 13, Riot used a live Q&A app developed by Twitter, for instance.

"Esports is growing at a rapid pace in Australia and globally, and this collaboration is a great way to tap into the engaged audience of gamers that are already using Twitter as a primary source of content," said Olly Wilton, head of sports at Twitter Australia. "By partnering with leading esports competitions like League of Origin, we look forward to bringing the best of esports live video and conversation together on Twitter."

League of Origin will feature players representing New Zealand, Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria. Every region will be run by an affiliated caster, who have each selected a coach and team to represent their turf, including players competing in Riots Oceanic Pro League (OPL) and Oceanic Challenger Series (OCS).

Riot Games Head of Esports Oceania, Daniel Ringland, is excited about the second-screen option Twitter brings to the tournament.

"Twitter is one of the most engaging platforms for fans of the OPL and OCS esports leagues, so it made sense to team up for League of Origin," Ringland said. "The live stream on Twitter will be a shortcut for fans in Oceania and around the world, as they can both watch and engage on the platform at the same time."

Since the inception of Twitter Gaming, the companys video game content vertical, Twitter has offered second-screen entertainment for esports events multiple times. Twitter has previusly partnered with Turners ELEAGUE and ESL, for instance.

Back in January, when Twitter Gaming was presented to the public, Twitters director of gaming partnerships, Rodrigo Velloso, emphasized what he thinks his company can add to esports events.

"Just like the sports conversation happens in parallel as a second-screen experience to TV, we also see Twitter as a second-stream experience to live esports events," Velloso said. "Its an incredible tool for esports teams, casters, and pro players who use it to connect with their fans."

Twitter strengthening its working relationship with Riot Games is the companys next step in setting itself up for a strong presence in esports.

Fijian singers and dancers will perform at the United Nations Headquarters in New York during the Ocean Conference from June 5 to 9.

The United Nations invited artists from the University of the South Pacifics Oceania Dance Theatre and Pasifika Voices to perform at the high-level Ocean Conference which is co-hosted by Fiji and Sweden.

The choir decided that I would be most deserving for this opportunity and I am really thankful to them for the support the entire choir has provided.

This has been a humbling opportunity. I am excited yet nervous at the same time.

The invitation has come from the Chair of the United Nations Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS) group, Marlene Moses, Ambassador of Nauru, to perform at the PSIDS event at the Ocean Conference.

With funding from Germany and Canada, the PSIDS group have taken this opportunity to showcase the performing arts of Fiji and Oceania for a global audience.

Next generation of stars named for Under-17 FIBA Oceania Championships – The Pick and Roll (blog)

Posted: at 10:58 pm

Basketball Australia has announced the mens and womens teams that will play in the 2017 FIBA Oceania Under-17 Championships in July.

After Victoria dominated at the recent Australian Under-18 Championships, it comes as no surprise the state is highly represented in both squads. Four Victorians will suit up for the men, including Josh Kunan, Keli Leaupepe, Sean MacDonald and Tyler Robertson. Of that group, Leaupepe, MacDonald and Robertson played in Vic Metros title winning team at the U18 Championships.

Three Victorians make up the womens squad, including two members of the victorious Vic Country team at the U18 Champs Chelsea DAngelo and Jazmin Shelley. Maddi Puli, a Vic Metro player, is the third of the Victorian contingent.

Queensland is also a staple of both teams. The foursome of Callum Dalton, Samson Froling, Aiden Krause and Kody Stattman has been selected for the men, while the women have the duo of Grace George and Miela Goodchild.

Isabelle Bourne (Australian Capital Territory), Emma Clarke (Western Australia), Shyla Heal (New South Wales), Darcy Rees (South Australia) and Sam Simons (South Australia) round out the womens team.

The mens side iscompleted by Kyle Bowen (Western Australia) and Isaiah Lee (New South Wales).

There was a long process to narrow down on the final teams, as extended squads were identified at the U18 tournament. From there, individual efforts at the Australian Development Camp in January, combined with other high performance programs, were the deciding factors.

Mens coach, Darren Perry, and womens coach, Tracy York, have been tasked with guiding Australia through the Oceania Championships.

The event marks the first stage in FIBAs new qualification system for the 2019 Under-19 World Championships. It is the first challenge Australia has to overcome, before embarking on the FIBA Asia Under-18 Championships, where success there will see them qualify for the World Championships.

Both teams will assemble in Guam for mini-camps before the tournament tips off.

The womens first battle is against Tahiti on July 10, while the men prepare to face New Caledonia on the same day.

The FIBA U17 Oceania Championships will take place in Guam July 10 to 15, according to the website. These championships will see eight mens and womens teams from Oceania come together for six days of competition to crown the Champions of Oceania.

The eight participating teams are as follows:

New Zealand, for the first time ever, took out the FIBA U18 Oceania Championship gold and Australia won the FIBA U18 Womens Oceania Championship in December 2016.

After fourthplace finishes for both the men and women in 2016, New Caledonia will push for their spot on the podium in Guam. However, they must beat out the Samoan men and womens teams who are coming off of mixed results. The U18 men finished fifthwhile the U18 women defeated New Caledonia for the bronze medal.

Tahiti could be a challenge this year after their U18 Division B bronze and silver medal finishes in the men and womens events respectively.

For the Marshall Islands and Palau, 2017 will mark the first time ever that either country will have a chance to secure a FIBA youth Basketball World Cup qualifying spot.

Host nation, Guam wont be taken down easily on their home soil. The women will aim to get back to the heights of their U18 bronze medal finish in 2014 and the men will build on the momentum gained from bringing a bronze medal home in 2016.

The FIBA U17 Oceania Championships is the first youth championships under FIBAs New Competition System. Under the new system, Asia and Oceania will combine for competition purposes and qualifying for the U17 and U19 World Cups will be a two-step process.

Greater opportunities await for Oceania nations, where previously just the Oceania champion got to strut their stuff at the next level. Now the top fourteams from Oceania will progress to play in further competition.

The top two men's and women's teams will earn their qualifying spot into the FIBA U18 Asia Championships in 2018. At this event, the top four place-getters will then qualify for the FIBA U19 World Basketball Cup in 2019.

Teams finishing thirdand fourth at the Oceania level will qualify for the Division B Asia Championships of that age group.

Japan Airlines expands Oceania network with new Melbourne service to kick off in September – Australian Aviation

Japan Airlines has underlined the resurgence in the Australia-Japan market with the launch of nonstop Melbourne-Tokyo (Narita) flights from September.

The oneworld alliance member said it would serve Melbourne daily with Boeing 787-8s, with the first flight scheduled to take off on September 1.

Japan Airlines president Yoshiharu Ueki said the Australia-Japan economic partnership agreement (EPA) had brought the two countries closer together and supported the mountingof flights to Melbourne.

We are delighted to introduce a new service to Melbourne, our second destination in Australia, Ueki said in a statement.

Since 1969, JAL has been operating to Australia and contributing to the promotion of bilateral relations between Japan and Australia. This partnership has become even stronger since the EPA went into force, and so we are pleased to serve Melbourne and continue supporting both nations from every possible aspect including business and tourism.

Japan Airlines said the 787-8 to be used to Melbourne featured 161 seats, comprising 38 business class seats with direct aisle access for every passenger, 35 premium economy seats in a 2-3-2 configuration and 88 economy seats in a passenger pleasing eight across 2-4-2 layout.

The airline is the only 787 operator to have an eight across economy cabin.

The Melbourne flights have been scheduled as a morning departure from Tokyo (Narita) arriving in Melbourne just before 2200. Meeanwhile, the reciprocal flight takes off from Tullamarine a little after midnight and lands at Tokyo in the morning.

Currently, Japan Airlines Sydney-Tokyo (Narita) operation is a morning departure from Sydney and red-eye service from Tokyo.

The new Melbourne-Tokyo (Narita) service is latest nonstop flight in an Australia-Japan market that has seen healthy growth over the past couple of years.

In August 2015, Qantas launched a new daily Brisbane-Tokyo (Narita) service with Airbus A330 equipment.

Then, in December that year Japanese carrier All Nippon Airways touched down in Australia for the first time since 1999 when it commenced nonstop Sydney-Tokyo (Haneda) flights.

And Qantas resumed Melbourne-Tokyo (Narita) flights in December 2016, returning to the route for the first time in eight years with a daily offering on Airbus A330s, following Jetstars withdrawal from the route.

Although Jetstar ended its flights to Japan from Melbourne, the Qantas-held low-cost carrier maintains services to Osaka and Tokyo (Narita) from the Gold Coast and Cairns.

Qantas International and Freight chief executive Gareth Evans said when announcing the Melbourne flights in September 2016 it was a boom time for tourism and business travel in the Japanese market.

Indeed, the Japan National Tourism Organisation statistics indicated 445,237 Australians visited Japan in calendar 2016, up 18.4 per cent compared with the prior corresponding period.

In terms of Japanese heading to this country, the latest figures from Tourism Australia showed there were 413,800 Japanese visitors to Australia in 2016, an increase of 22.7 per cent from a year earlier. Japan was Australias sixth largest source market of foreign visitors.

The latest annual report on international airline activity from Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE) indicated loads on Australia-Japan flights were quite healthy. The airlines carried 1.26 million passengers in calendar 2016, with an average seat factor of 82.2 per cent.

And capacity, measured by available seats, is also on the up. In calendar 2016, there were about 1.5 million nonstop seats between Australia and Japan, up about 20.1 per cent from the prior year.

While encouraging, the figures are a long way away from the heady levels reached in the 1990s when there were more than 2.5 million seats a year between Australia and Japan, with Qantas the dominant carrier on the route.

In 1999, total seat capacity was still about two million.

Tourism Australia managing director John OSullivan said: A critical reason behind the strong inbound performance we have enjoyed from Japan over the past 12 months has been increased aviation capacity.

We know that Japanese travellers have a strong preference for full-service carriers and direct nonstop flights, so we expect the new service to be very popular and help maintain what has been a significant bounce back from what is such an important market for Australian tourism.
