Christchurch MMA fighter Kieran Joblin chasing top Oceania ranking – Stuff.co.nz

Christchurch MMA fighter Kieran Joblin needs to beat Australian Isaac Hardman to become the top-ranked Oceania lightweight fighter.

Christchurch mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Kieran Joblin has flown to Brisbane with one thought on his mind - getting his No 1 Oceania lightweight ranking back.

Needing to win his next fightto do so, the 28-year-old will take onAustralian Isaac Hardman in the main event at XFC 31 in Brisbane on Saturday night.

Joblin (20-8), whose fighting name is "Stonecutter", had a four-win streak snapped by Japanese pro Kazuki Tokudomeat Pancrase 288 in Tokyo last month, and is itching to bounce back.

Hardman, a strong boxer, has a 7-0 record and the Queenslander will no doubt be boostedby fighting in front of his home-town fans inBrisbane.

However, Joblin is not short of confidence ahead of the fight.

"It's a good fight for me match-up wise. I can see myself winning the fight in every way," Joblin said.

"It's just if I'm patient with the game plan. If I take my time and don't walk into something silly, I should get the win fine."

But Hardmanis no mug.

On the back of a stellar year, he was awarded the 2016 Fight News Australia breakthrough fighter of the year award, before claiming the Australian Fighting Championship lightweight title earlier this year.

Joblin, a stonemason by day, knows full well Hardman has the ability to dish out a knockout blow.

"He fought my teammate in China earlier in theyear, so I got to see that fight and see where he is strong," Joblin said before he flew to Brisbane on Thursday.

"He's got a good pair of hands on him, but I'll be looking to mix it up with my kick-boxing and my wrestling, as well. Make it an MMA fight, not a boxing fight."

All going well in Brisbane, Joblin is eyeing up one or two more fights before the end of the year, including the second and final fight of the Pancrase contract he earned earlier late last year.

Joblin left Japan last month with his head held high, after losing the toughest fight of his career by unanimous decision to Pancrase champion Tokudome.

"It was a very competitive fight," Joblin said. "Everyone else he has fought he has finished in a minute in the first round.

"So I did a good to compete with him. It's just a couple of tactical changes and I can beat these guys. I know I'm good enough to fight with them,it's just being able to defeat them."

Riot Oceania appoint TLA Worldwide as exclusive sponsorship sales agency – The Roar

Posted: at 5:39 am

Legacy play against the Chiefs during the 2016 Oceanic Pro League final (Chiefs eSports)

Riot Games Oceanias latest agency appointment suggests that the Oceanic Pro League is here for good.

Across the Pacific Ocean, the North American LCS enters its final playoff tournament before the league enters franchising.

The numbers are considerably bigger over in Santa Monica Riot are asking teams for a $US10 million buy-in, and while revenue sharing will certainly help to offset that initial fee, its clear that the NA LCS is now at a point where Riot can choose to be much more judicious about who they choose to partner with.

What about in Australia? Well, were not quite there yet. Only this year did all eight OPL teams move into team houses, and the cost of relocation and housing was still absorbed in part by Riot Oceania as part of their move to a live studio broadcast.

Riots relationship with esports was born from a desire to meet player demand for high-level competition, and the mantra of player value first guided the global establishment of League of Legends esports across the world in the face of financial loss.

And yes, regardless of whether you want to attach more self-seeking motives to Riots shameless declaration that esports is a significant investment that [theyre] not making money from, the fact stands that it isnt a profitable venture for many developers at least for now.

World of Tanks devs Wargaming are just one of many other companies willing to allow their esports departments to go into the red, either out of some altruistic love for their player base or, more realistically, the belief that esports will become a future cash cow.

Yet, the path to monetisation (and, ultimately, profitability) isnt the same for every company. Valve have capitalised on the success of their tournaments by creating exclusive in-game content gated behind battle passes and compendiums, while stickers and themed skins anchor Counter-Strike: Global Offensives esports monetisation. Riot and Blizzard have struck sponsorship deals, but the financials around their esports ventures are anything but transparent.

So it might not come as a surprise that Riot Oceania have appointed TLA Worldwide as their exclusive sponsorship sales agency. Formerly Elite Sports Properties, TLA are a global sports marketing agency that have dipped their toes into just about every major sports league around the world, and theyll be connecting sponsors with the OPL on Riots behalf.

Riot Oceania arent the first owners of a major esports league to employ a sponsorship agency to find them sources of revenue. Showdown (Twitchs exclusive distributor of owned media in Australia and New Zealand) and Seven West Media (who recently launched screenPLAY, a new esports platform) have been connected to McDonalds and St George Bank thanks to the efforts of sports marketing agency The Gemba Group.

The OPL has danced with big league sponsors before apart from the very esportsy Logitech and Red Bull, Dominos and Uber have entered partnerships with Riot in the past. And unless Riot find a way to move cash from their viewers pockets into their coffers a la Valve, sponsors will likely be their major source of esports revenue moving forward.

Endemic sponsors will always be there. You dont need to do a lot of work to sell a core gamer a Logitech mouse or a four-pack of Red Bull. The challenge lies in the non-endemic sponsors brands that sit on the fringe, like PwC and Streets. Esports fans are fickle. There are only so many brand activations they can tolerate before a clever partnership becomes annoying marketing. It is this question that Riot will have to navigate if the OPL is to see long-term success.

Riot see the OPL as a competitor to the AFL or any other major sports league in the Oceanic region. If the sleek analyst desks, sideline interviews and prized tipping contests didnt tip you off, the aggressive sponsorship deals should. Theyve convinced us that League of Legends and the OPL are here to stay. For their sake, lets hope theyre right.

Oceania | Political feud erupts between Australia and New Zealand – Macau Daily Times

Home | Asia-Pacific | Oceania | Political feud erupts between Australia and New Zealand

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop

Like squabbling siblings, New Zealand and Australia have close ties but also a rivalry that can sometimes turn ugly.

That tension spilled into politics yesterday, when Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop accused New Zealands opposition Labour Party of conspiring to undermine her government, a claim New Zealand lawmakers said was false and utter nonsense.

The unlikely dispute involved Barnaby Joyce, Australias deputy prime minister. Joyce said Monday hed been advised he was a New Zealand citizen and an Australian court was being asked to determine if he should be kicked out of parliament because Australias constitution bans lawmakers from being dual citizens.

Australias Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce

If Joyce was disqualified, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbulls center-right government could lose its single-seat majority in the House of Representatives, where parties need a majority to govern.

But Joyce told Australias parliament yeterday that New Zealand had just told him verbally that his citizenship had been renounced after he requested as much over the weekend, and he was now awaiting written confirmation. Renunciation wont affect the court decision since the case rests on his eligibility to run in the last election.

Bishop said Australias opposition Labor Party had used their New Zealand counterparts to raise questions about Joyce in the New Zealand parliament.

This is highly unethical at least, but more importantly it puts at risk the relationship between the Australian government and the New Zealand government, Bishop told reporters in Canberra.

New Zealand is facing an election, she said. Should there be a change of government, I would find it very hard to build trust with those involved in allegations designed to undermine the government of Australia.

New Zealands election is next month.

New Zealand Labour Party Leader Jacinda Ardern said the claims were false and highly regrettable. She said shed contacted the Australian High Commission to register her disappointment and would be meeting with the commissioner in person.

Bishop was referring to two questions lodged in the New Zealand parliament by Labour lawmaker Chris Hipkins, who asked whether children born in Australia to a New Zealand father automatically had New Zealand citizenship.

Ardern said she had no knowledge of the questions lodged by Hipkins and knew nothing about the Joyce case until it broke in the media this week.

She told Radio New Zealand that somebody connected with the Australian Labor Party had put the questions to Hipkins without mentioning Joyce, and that Hipkins wouldnt have asked them if he knew how they were going to be used. She called the questions inappropriate.

I greatly value New Zealands relationship with the Australian government, she said in a statement. I will not let false claims stand in the way of that relationship. I would happily take a call from Julie Bishop to clarify matters.

New Zealands Internal Affairs Minister Peter Dunne said Hipkins had not started the row.

This is so much utter nonsense while Hipkins questions were inappropriate, they were not the instigator, Dunne tweeted. Australian media inquiries were.

Joyce is perhaps best known abroad for the tough stance he took on Johnny Depps pet dogs Pistol and Boo. Joyce threatened to have the Yorkshire terriers euthanized after saying they were smuggled into Australia in 2014 where Depp was filming the fifth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean movie series.

Depps then-wife Amber Heard pleaded guilty to falsifying an immigration document to conceal the dogs in a private jet. She avoided jail under a deal that included Heard and Depp appearing in an awkward video warning against others breaking Australias strict quarantine laws.

The Australian and New Zealand opposition parties are kindred center-left parties, although the Australian party uses the American spelling for its name. Nick Perry & Rod Mcguirk,AP
