Europe flagged as continent responsible for most betting alerts by GLMS – SBC News
Posted: at 12:22 pm
The Global Lottery Monitoring System (GLMS) has released its report for Q1 2021, identifying Europe as the continent most responsible for suspicious betting alerts.
Overall, 323 alerts were recorded during the first quarter of 2021, with Europe the only continent demonstrating triple figures, accounting for 160 suspicious betting activity warnings.
Asia followed with 66, with South America close behind at 58, whilst North America, Africa and Oceania generated 14, eight and seven warnings respectively. A further 10 alerts were classified as international.
Of the 160 European alerts, football was the sport with the most suspicious wagers, reporting a total of 94 warnings, whilst basketball accounted for 30. Ice hockey, esports, tennis and volleyball and handball also witnessed suspicious betting activity.
In contrast, esports saw extensive illicit betting in Asia, with 24 alerts generated for this sector the same number of warnings generated by football across the continent, whilst basketball also reported the second highest activity levels at 17.
The statistics demonstrate a noticeable difference from those uncovered by the International Betting Integrity Associations (IBIA) 2020 report, largely due to the significance of tennis in the latters findings.
Of the 270 cases reported by the IBIA a 48% increase on the 2019 figure tennis accounted for 98 alerts, with 39 handled by the International Tennis Integrity Association (ITIA).
In total, football dominated the total number of alerts sent to GLMS members at 196 in Q1 2021, followed by basketball at 56, esports at 40 and ice hockey at 15, whilst volleyball and handball generated only one each.
As sports events globally are starting up again, as seen with MarchMadness in the U.S., we believe our lottery sports customers are going to have a great 2021, said Jennifer Welshons, Senior Vice President of Marketing of GLMS member organisation Scientific Games.
We are already experiencing record weeks in Delaware in the U.S. and in Turkey, and we are thrilled to support this with one of the most advanced sports betting platforms in the industry.
We believe that modernization is the clear path to protecting lottery funding for the vital programs and good causes they support.
Additionally, the organisation outlined that 188 of the 323 alerts were classified as green alerts, relating to factors such as team related news, wrong starting prices, member information and situations in which a one person or entity owned a sports club and its sponsor.
A further 67 yellow alerts were reported, generated by unexplainable odds changes, tournament structure and rumours of match fixing from news outlets, betting forums and social media.
Finally, of the 323 alerts, 13 were red alerts warnings supported by rumours of match fixing from a named source as well as unexplainable odds changes, betfair volume and tournament structure.
The past year has presented exceptional challenges which have had a profound impact across the industry, added Edward Peace, Managing Director of Sporting Solutions.
Our response has been guided by a commitment to do the right thing for our people and partners, reflecting a set of company values that long pre-dates the COVID-19 pandemic.
We worked hard on event and competition integrity, both internally and with external providers, to ensure new content that filled the COVID-19 void was is in line with ourhigh standards.

MSI preview: 11 teams heading to Iceland; VCS unable to attend once again – The Korea Herald
Posted: at 12:22 pm
We explored numerous solutions that would allow the VCS team to compete in Iceland, but we were unable to find a way to make this happen. We are deeply disappointed to have to continue without one of our most passionate leagues, said Tom Martell, director of operations at Riot Esports, Tuesday.
The 2021 MSI will take place in Reykjavik, Iceland, May 6 to 22. As last years MSI was canceled due to the pandemic, fans of LoL esports eagerly await the showdown between the top teams from each region. Unlike previous years, when teams from minor regions such as Japan, Turkey and Oceania had to play in a preliminary group competition before they could play teams from major regions such as South Korea, China and Europe, the 12 teams were divided into three groups this year, with the two best-performing teams from each group heading to the next round.
There is more on the line than prize money and honors: The region to win this years MSI will receive an extra ticket at the World Championships. So will the best-performing region at international events over the past year.
Here are the MSI groups and the participating teams.
In Group A were Chinese LoL Pro Leagues Royal Never Give Up, Vietnams GAM Esports, Russias Unicorns of Love and Oceanias Pentanet.GG. However, as GAM Esports cannot participate, the group will be played with just the three remaining teams.
While every member of DWG Kia looked forward to playing against former teammate Jang Nuguri Ha-gwon, RNG won against FunPlus Phoenix 3-1 in the LPL finals on Sunday, defeating Nuguri and Kim Doinb Tae-sang in the mid lane.
RNG was the No. 1 team to finish during the regular season with a 14-2 record. The franchise star Li Xiaohu Yuan-hao went to the top lane this season to much success, and RNGs bot lane popped off in the finals to secure the MSI ticket. The team will most likely be DWG Kias greatest threat at the MSI and the clear favorite to come out of Group A as the No. 1 seed.
With Vietnam out of the picture, the Continental Leagues Unicorns of Love will most likely advance to the next round along with RNG. Although the Russian powerhouse team came out fourth in the spring season, it won both playoff games to head to the MSI.
Although Oceanias Pentanet.GG dominated the newly organized Oceania league regular season to head to the MSI, they are unlikely to come out of the group stage and will do their best to gain valuable international experience.
In Group B are Europes MAD Lions, the Pacific Championship series PSG Talon, Turkeys Istanbul Wildcats and Brazils paiN Gaming.
MAD Lions is the first team in over six years to win the LoL European Championships other than Fnatic and G2 Esports. The team with star top laner Irfan Berk Armut Tukek from Turkey won in a nail-biting five-game series in the finals against Rogue in the LEC finals. As Europe is considered the third-most-competitive region, behind China and Korea, fans hope MAD Lions can continue Europes success in the MSI, as G2 Esports from EU won MSI 2019.
Besides MAD Lions -- the favorites to get out of Group B -- the second could be any of the three teams. All three regions have shown up at international events at some point.
Finally, in Group C are Koreas DWG Kia, North Americas Cloud9, Latin Americas Gillette Infinity and Japans DetonatioN FocusMe.
It is hard to imagine a case where DWG Kia and C9 dont come out as the No. 1 and 2 teams of this group. Both teams have performed superbly in their regions and are far ahead of the other two teams.
Cloud9 added one of the best European players, Luka Perkz Perkovic, to dominate the NA league. As they won last years spring split but failed to make the Worlds, many fans look forward to their first MSI in the organizations history.
No more needs to be said about DWG Kia -- currently regarded as the best team in the world. If they manage to win the MSI, they will have won every possible tournament since last summer. This is also Kim Khan Dong-has third time at the MSI. As he was runner-up to Kingzone DragonX and lost in the quarterfinals with SKT, he hopes to finally win the MSI this year.
This will also be the first time Korea and Japan play each other at an official Riot Games event.
Meanwhile, the MSI will take place in patch 11.9, a different version from what the teams played in their regions. In the two remaining weeks, teams will be preparing different strategies and train to compete with the best in the world.

Tokyo Olympic draw held: Trans-Tasman derby and avoiding the big boys – Football in Oceania
Posted: at 12:22 pm
The groups for the Tokyo Olympics were drawn on thursday, and it was a tough draw for the two NZ teams.
The New Zealand womens team, qualified for the Tokyo Olympics thanks to an impressive OFC Nations Cup performance in New Caledonia a little over two years ago.
But it will not be easy for them as the draw set up a trans-Tasman derby with Australia, as well as powerhouse, and gold medal favourites, USA and Rio 2016 finalists Sweden.
It will take a huge effort for the Football Ferns to get out of the group, but anything is possible at the Olympics.
For the mens U23 side, it was a slightly easier draw, for what that is worth, as they managed to avoid any of the really big names.
Yet their group is still a tough one; with one of Asias best sides in South Korea, able to draw on overage players such as Heung-min Son of Tottenham, alongside U21 European Championship surprise package Romania.
Honduras, whom the U20 NZ team beat 5-0 at the U20 World Cup in 2019, is the last team in the group.
The draw looks a little kinder to the mens side, but it is still a formidable task at hand for the junior All Whites. If they can bring the likes of Chris Wood as one of their overage players, however, that could help tip a potential knockout round appearance in their favour.
In the mens competition, the top two teams go through, while the women also have the two best third placed teams move on to the knockout stage.
Group A: Japan, South Africa, Mexico, France
Group B: New Zealand, Korea Republic, Honduras, Romania
Group C: Egypt, Spain, Argentina, Australia
Group D: Brazil, Germany, Cte dIvoire, Saudi Arabia
Group E: Japan, Canada, Great Britain, Chile
Group F: China PR, Brazil, Zambia, Netherlands
Group G: Sweden, USA, Australia, New Zealand
