SCA girls get second win – The Suffolk News-Herald – Suffolk News-Herald

Posted: at 6:13 am

Suffolk Christian Academys girls basketball team picked up its second win of the season Jan. 15, defeating Denbigh Baptist Christian of Newport News 29-26.

The Knights trailed by two, 9-7 after the first quarter, but led 17-14 at the half. Denbigh Christan cut the lead to two points at the end of the third quarter, but they held on for the victory.

Jadyn Patton led SCA with 14 points on 6-for-11 shooting, while Laura Cornette had eight points. Patton added four assists and had eight steals, while Cornette also had five rebounds, five steals and three assists.

In the girls 41-27 loss to Bethel Assembly Christian Academy of Windsor, N.C., SCA had a strong third quarter in outscoring Bethel Assembly Christian 15-10, but it couldnt overcome a first half in which it was outscored 23-9.

In the loss, Cornette scored 18 points on 7-for-13 shooting and had nine steals, five rebounds and two assists. Though Patton had just four points, she added nine rebounds, four steals and three assists. Kennedy Oparaji had seven rebounds in the loss.

Nansemond-Suffolk Academys girls basketball team dropped a pair of games to Catholic, falling 59-34 in the first matchup Jan. 12 and 61-31 Jan. 15.

During the first of the two games against Catholic, NSA actually led 12-11 after the first quarter, but it was held to five points in each of the next two quarters as it was outscored 33-10, allowing the Crusaders to pull away.

In the second matchup, NSA trailed 23-7 after the first quarter and was down 41-15 at the half. The Saints played the Crusaders closer in the second half, only being outscored in the final two quarters 20-17.

The Nansemond-Suffolk Academy boys basketball team gave Catholic High School a good run in a pair of recent games, but dropped both to extend its losing streak to six games.

In the first matchup Jan. 12, Catholic took the win 53-41. Though they worked to stay with the Crusaders of Virginia Beach, the Saints (1-6) led just once, trailing 11-6 after one quarter and 33-21 at the half as Catholic made 70% of its first-half shots.

NSA cut the lead to six points after the third quarter, but it wasnt able to fully close the gap.

The Saints, who were 14-for-38 from the field, made eight 3-pointers. Grant Lopez, who led them in scoring with 13 points, had three of them. Isaiah Fuhrmann had eight points on 3-for-5 shooting while Riley DeCandido and Kemauri Spencer each had seven points, with DeCandido adding five rebounds. We got a lot of good shots, but our margin for error is just very small with what we have for our roster, said NSA coach Chris Fuhrmann. We just dont have a dominant big guy this year. We dont have the guard play that we had the last couple of years with (George) Pettaway and Kaleb Brown to where, if stuff gets a little hectic, those guys were so talented they were able to create something for themselves or somebody else. We have to do a whole lot now together and really execute, and weve been doing a much better job at that.

In the second matchup against Catholic Jan. 15 on Senior Night parents of the seniors were allowed to attend NSA was tied at the half and trailed by three after three quarters before falling 41-35.

Brady Canfield led the Saints with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Spencer had 12 points on 4-for-5 shooting. Isaiah Fuhrmann added seven points, going a perfect 3-for-3 from the field.

NSAs boys came even closer to picking up a win Jan. 7 against Peninsula Catholic, losing 53-52. The Saints had a chance for a dramatic win, but the inbounds pass to an open player with just two seconds on the clock clanged off the rim as time expired.

I was really pleased with our effort, Chris Fuhrmann said of the loss to Peninsula Catholic. Peninsula Catholic, theyve been playing a whole lot more than we have. Even over the summer, they did a lot of things that we werent able to do.

The Saints have had to play since Jan. 5 without Jaden Freeman, who injured an ankle in the second matchup against Cape Henry Collegiate and is out for the season.

Chris Fuhrmann said Lopez, at guard, and Spencer, as a forward, have been big contributors to the teams this season.

Lopez, at 5-foot-9-inches, is expected to play at Division III Randolph College next year, though his coach didnt necessarily see it early on in his high school career, but he cites the players work ethic and notes that he has to go up against every teams best player.

Were really excited and proud of him for that, and hes worked extremely hard these last two years to get himself in the position he is, Chris Fuhrmann said. When I first came over, if you had told me that hed be able to go and play on a Division III roster, or get on a Division III roster, I probably would have been like, Yeah, I dont really see it. But he has really worked extremely hard. Hes a very, very good shooter.

Spencer, according to his coach, is the ultimate workhorse and does anything asked of him.

Hes typically our leading rebounder, Chris Fuhrmann said, and this year, hes had to expand in scoring a little bit. Hes now the first or second option. Hes had to get used to that because hes a very selfless player. He was passing the ball, getting other people involved, so to try to tell him you have to score now is a little bit against his nature because of how he is and how he plays, and being that guy that does all the dirty work and who still ends up getting his.

NSA has been helped by two transfers, the 6-foot-5-inch Canfield from California, and then the coachs cousin, freshman Isaiah Fuhrmann.

But Chris Fuhrmann said it has been DeCandido, who is a verbal commit to the University of Maryland for baseball, who has had to make the biggest adjustment this season in having to start at point guard. As a freshman, he played as an off-guard and did not have any big responsibility, but he has shown improvement as the season has progressed.

Its just been difficult making that adjustment, Chris Fuhrmann said.

Meanwhile, SCAs boys basketball team got off to a slow start in its 52-25 loss Jan. 15 to Franklins Rock Church, as the Knights were outscored 20-2 in the first quarter. It followed a 69-30 loss to Bethel Assembly Christian Academy.

Knights coach DJ Daniels said this season has been a growing experience for his team. He stresses the importance of learning from what they do wrong while also focusing on what they have been able to accomplish.

Weve had about two or three games where I felt like we werent really in it, Daniels said.Weve played a few teams that had mostly seniors, way bigger, way better and stronger than us. And we still tried our best to work on certain things but weve had a couple of games that we had competitive moments and we put it all together.

SCA is playing in a new conference this season the North Carolina Christian Athletic Association that Daniels said gives the school a better opportunity to compete than its previous one, the Hampton Roads Athletic Conference. NCCAA schools include North Carolina schools Victory Christian and New Life Academy in Elizabeth City, Bethel Assembly in Windsor, Ahoskie Christian Academy and Trinity Christian School in Greenville.

Daniels said sophomore forward Joshua Peacock has been growing as a player and has potential through the roof and freshman Isaac Smith, at shooting guard, has shown a lot of improvement and could be a force before hes done playing. Another freshman, Landon Patton, has been playing point guard and has been showing good ball-handling skills.

The Knights (0-9) are to play Ahoskie Christian Academy Jan. 19 and play at TEACH Basketball of Virginia Beach Jan. 22.

Its been a tough season, Daniels said. We have one senior on the roster and one junior on the roster, so it was going to be a rough season in terms of the won and loss record. But I cant stress enough how thankful we all are that we can get a season in and were starting to grow as a team. We may be taking our lumps this year and next year, but as those guys start to age, well really start to have some gelling and have a pretty experienced team on the varsity level.

NSA Cites DoD Crypto Work in First-Ever Cybersecurity Year-End Report – MeriTalk

Posted: January 17, 2021 at 9:22 am

The National Security Agency (NSA) issued its first Cybersecurity Year In Review report, highlighting key achievements from 2020 including encryption work for the Pentagon and looking ahead to threats for 2021.

The NSA launched its Cybersecurity Directorate in October of 2019 to prevent and eradicate cyber threats to the United States.

As we began our first year, we took a deliberate approach to building trust by sharing unclassified threat and cybersecurity advice. We forged deeper relationships with our U.S. government and industry partners to deliver better outcomes than any of us could achieve alone, Anne Neuberger wrote in the report. Neuberger has served as the agencys Director of Cybersecurity since 2019, and was recently chosen by President-elect Joe Biden to serve in a newly created cybersecurity role on the Presidents National Security Council (NSC).

The report highlights key achievements from the past year, including a push to modernize encryption across the Department of Defense (DoD). The effort both eliminated cryptography at risk from attack due to adversarial computational advances, and made it resistant to exploitation by a quantum computer.

Additionally, the NSA highlighted achievements such as supporting the 2020 election security defense effort, development efforts of the COVID-19 vaccine, and the creation of the NSA Cybersecurity Twitter handle, @NSACyber.

Looking ahead, NSA warned that China, Russia, and Iran are the three biggest foreign threats for 2021. Reportedly, China is using widespread intellectual property theft, Russia is using cyber operations as a corrosive and destabilizing force across multiple geographic regions, and Iran has demonstrated the ability and willingness to launch disruptive cyber operations on critical infrastructure.

NSA acknowledged 2020 was a tough year and going forward, the agency has made a commitment to be more open and transparent about the work it does.

Ian Laurel on Volleyball NSA elections: ‘Now is not the time to draw out party lines’ – Tiebreaker Times

Posted: at 9:22 am

Netizens are eyeing Philippine Superliga president Dr. Ian Laurel as one of the bets to lead the countrys new volleyball national sports association.

And after years of bickering with and throwing jabs at rival league Premier Volleyball League, Laurel is now calling for unity among all the stakeholders of the sport.

It is with utmost humility that I hope we can put our personal interests aside and put the interest of Philippine Volleyball above our egos and personal gains, read Laurels statement.

Now is not the time to draw out party lines and divide the volleyball community even deeper. In fact, this is the time to break down the walls that divide us for the greater good of the sport that we all love. Let us work to prevent another era of divisiveness.

Back in 2014, the Philippine Volleyball Federation had a leadership crisis that involved Karl Chan and Gener Dungo. It resulted in the Philippine Olympic Committee, led by vice president Joey Romasanta, not recognizing the PVF as the countrys volleyball NSA.

A year later, the Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas was formed.

The LVPI only received probationary status from the International Volleyball Federation. Meanwhile, the PVF still had recognition as a member but with no voting rights.

In the midst of it all, domestic leagues PSL, established in 2013, and V-League, which began in 2004, figured in a competitive rivalry. The LVPI has been backing the efforts of PSL.

Last August, the FIVB decided to call on the POC to hold a special election for a legitimate volleyball NSA.

The pandemic has brought out the worst possible conditions to our sports and all sports in general, said Laurel, who is directly under league chairman Popoy Juico in the PSL hierarchy.

Let us not allow it to do the same to us. I pray that we see the good in everyone and do what is best for Philippine volleyball.

Now is not the right time to split NSA and CYBERCOM – C4ISRNet

Posted: January 1, 2021 at 9:38 am

In addition to the big Russian hack, some other surprising news occurred in the cybersecurity world this holiday season. The Pentagon is reportedly considering ending the dual-hat arrangement that allows the commander of U.S. Cyber Command to simultaneously serve as director of the National Security Agency.

This idea, which has surfaced repeatedly since the standup of CYBERCOM, will not advance U.S. national security. The current arrangement has served both organizations well for years. There is no immediate need to split the two offices right now.

According to reports, the plan to end the dual-hat arrangement has been sent to Chairman of the Joint Chiefs General Mark Milley, who, according to public law, would have to sign off on the split along with acting Secretary of Defense Chris Miller.

This initiative has caused some consternation in Congress, since lawmakers enacted legislation to address this very issue. The fiscal 2017 and 2018 National Defense Authorization Acts put certain roadblocks in place to ensure a proposal to make the split would not harm national security. In essence, both the secretary of defense and chairman of the Joint Chiefs need to sign off and certify the plan will not harm national security before the arrangement is ended.

The dual-hat arrangement started in 2009 when Cyber Command was created in order to provide it with the support and resources it needed to conduct its mission. The arrangement gave the growing Cyber Command the ability to borrow manpower and other resources from the NSA.

A lot has changed since 2009. Cyber Command has built 133 Cyber Mission Force teams and has conducted sophisticated operations, such as the cyber campaign against the Islamic State, which disrupted the latters ability to distribute propaganda online. This means CYBERCOM has gained in experience and developed capacity.

But how ready is it to split its command, and can that be done without affecting its operations? More fundamentally, should splitting the command be a long-term goal?

The initial push to end the dual-hat started during the Obama presidency and was politically motivated in the wake of the Snowden controversy. But military necessity should guide this shift, not politics. So what are the arguments for and against?

Advocates for ending the dual-hat argue that one commander can lead to unfair prioritization of one organization NSA or CYBERCOM over the other. They also question the ability for one person to effectively manage two large organizations and claim that increased use of the NSAs advanced tools could lead to their premature exposure, possibly through a CYBERCOM operation.

Advocates for keeping the current arrangement focus on the close cooperation and synergy it allows between the two organizations that help their operations, the faster decision-making process it enables and the more efficient use of resources, since the two organizations can more easily share.

While there are arguments on both sides and many see the split happening at some point down the road, two things seem clear. A split should not be done hastily or prematurely. The close cooperation between the two organizations must be preserved.

And lets not forget the timing. Right now, the U.S. government is reeling from a massive breach by suspected Russian hackers with sweeping consequences, making this an inopportune moment for large organizational changes that could hinder cyber operations.

Both the former commander, Adm. Michael Rogers, and current commander, Gen. Paul Nakasone, have expressed caution about ending the arrangement prematurely. Both have said the arrangement works and enables the close relationship between the two organizations.

The two organizations operate under different legal authorities. Cyber Command draws its authorities from Title 10, which governs military forces, and NSA usually operates under Title 50 governing intelligence functions. This mirrors how cyber operations work as well, with the need for close collaboration between intelligence and military operations.

This means that Cyber Command and the NSA are able to collaborate in a way that other military forces are not able to cooperate with their intelligence counterparts. They currently enjoy a large degree of corporate synergy, where their close cooperation and unified command makes them more effective than if they were apart.

As Gen. Nakasone has said, The National Security Agency is our most important partner; the strength of this relationship will remain critical to the defense of the nation. The agencys world-class expertise, technical capabilities and accesses are crucial to USCYBERCOMs success.

Ending the dual-hat should only be done if it will enhance the effectiveness of both organizations in their operations, and a clear plan should be created with support from Congress, as it will need congressional support to be successful. Policymakers should continue to support the growth and development of Cyber Command to ensure that it would be ready for a future split down the road.

James Di Pane is a researcher at the Heritage Foundations Center for National Defense who focuses on military cybersecurity issues.

Edward Snowden and wife share photos of newborn son amid push for Trump to pardon NSA leaker – Washington Times

Posted: at 9:38 am

Edward J. Snowden and his wife, Lindsay Mills, announced the birth of their first child Friday amid a push for President Trump to pardon the fugitive leaker of crimes keeping him from returning to the U.S.

The couple, who have resided in Russia for the last several years, shared photos on social media showing them holding their newborn child.

Happy Holidays from our newly expanded family, Ms. Mills said on Instagram where she posted the photos. The greatest gift is the love we share, Mr. Snowden added on Twitter where he shared one of them.

Mr. Snowden, a former CIA employee and National Security Agency contractor, admittedly leaked a trove of classified documents to the media in 2013 exposing the NSAs vast operations and capabilities.

The Department of Justice under former President Barack Obama accordingly charged Mr. Snowden with stealing and violating the U.S. Espionage Act, putting him at risk of serving up to 30 years in prison.

However, Mr. Snowden has successfully avoided the long arm of the law during the last 7.5 years as a result of residing in Russia, which does not have an extradition agreement with the U.S. government.

Mr. Snowden said while his wife was expecting that they were both applying for dual citizenship to avoid the possibility of being legally separated from their son, a Russian citizen by birth.

After years of separation from our parents, my wife and I have no desire to be separated from our son. Thats why, in this era of pandemics and closed borders, were applying for dual US-Russian citizenship, Mr. Snowden said last month on Twitter.

Anatoly Kucherena, a lawyer for Mr. Snowden, said on Saturday that both Ms. Mills and her newborn son are in excellent health, Russias Interfax news agency reported over the weekend.

Mr. Snowden, 37, has previously said he will return to the U.S. if given a trial he deems fair, although some of his defenders are now pushing the president to have the case against him dropped entirely.

Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky and Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, both Republicans closely allied with Mr. Trump, each advocated recently for Mr. Trump to pardon Mr. Snowden before his presidency ends.

Mr. Trump, who called Mr. Snowden a traitor prior to becoming president, said in August that he was considering granting him a pardon. He has since pardoned dozens of others.

India, Pakistan exchange list of nuclear installations – Outlook India

Islamabad, Jan 1 (PTI) Pakistan and India on Friday conducted the annual practice of exchanging the list of their nuclear installations under a bilateral arrangement that prohibits them from attacking each other''s atomic facilities.

The exchange was made in accordance with Article-II of the Agreement on Prohibition of Attacks against Nuclear Installations and Facilities between Pakistan and India, signed on December 31, 1988, the Foreign Office (FO) said in a statement here.

It said that the list of nuclear installations and facilities in Pakistan was officially handed over to a representative of the Indian High Commission at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today, at 1100 hrs (PST).

"The Indian Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi handed over the list of Indian Nuclear installations and facilities to a representative of the Pakistan High Commission at 1130 hrs (IST)," it added.

The agreement contains the provision that both countries inform each other of their nuclear installations and facilities on January 1 every year.

This has been done consecutively since January 1, 1992, according to the FO.

The exchange of information comes despite the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan.

The relationship dipped after India''s war planes pounded a terrorist training camp deep inside Pakistan on February 26, 2019 in response to the Pulwama terror attack carried out by Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed terror group in which 40 CRPF jawans were killed.

Tensions between the two nations spiked further after New Delhi abrogated provisions of Article 370 of the Constitution to withdraw Jammu and Kashmir''s special status and bifurcated it into two Union Territories.

Pakistan downgraded its diplomatic relations with India and expelled the Indian high commissioner following the revocation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir on August 5, 2019.

Asserting that the abrogation of Article 370 was its "internal matter", India has defended the imposition of restrictions in the Kashmir Valley on the grounds that they were put to prevent Pakistan from creating more mischief through proxies and terrorists. PTI SH NSA AKJ NSA
