Kin is part of a flourishing functional beverage category, often branded with gradient, pastel colors, 1970s nostalgia logos and no alcohol. Poppi, Ruby, Superfrau, Dune Glow Remedy, Droplet, Brighter, Evexia Kafe, Sunwink and De Soi, co-founded by Katy Perry, assert that their seltzers, juices and tonics can heal you from the inside out with prebiotics, mushrooms, apple cider vinegar, collagen, ginger, antioxidants, amino acids, nootropics and adaptogens, which is not an accepted scientific term, despite rampant use in the wellness and beverage industries. Some of these ingredients are longtime home remedies and supplements recommended by doctors; others, like adaptogens, are more dubious in their claims and may amount to little more than marketing.
In any case, the drinks are selling. What can they actually do for you?
Purported benefits include a balanced gut, a relaxed mind and brighter skin similar to the promises supplements and topical skin-care products have always made. The caveat: these drinks are not regulated by the F.D.A. and none of the effects have been backed up by regulatory or trade commissions.
When I go to Sephora, its all of these products offering me moisture and anti-aging benefits, and its the same things you see going down these beverage aisles, said Andrea Hernndez, a food and beverage forecaster and the founder of Snaxshot, a newsletter about trendy seltzers, canned wines, dips, cereals and more. These drinks are literally labeling beauty as a function.
And people will pay up for anything perceived as a shortcut to beauty or better health.
Sales of functional beverages increased by almost 16 percent between November 2020 and November 2021, according to Spins, a data firm. Its one of the fastest growing, nonalcoholic drink categories in the United States. Brands like Poppi and Ruby are sold at mainstream supermarkets like Whole Foods; Erewhon, the California market chain, is an investor in Barcode.
In early January, Ms. Perry introduced De Soi, her sparkling aperitif made with mind mellowing adaptogens. Barcode, originally developed for N.B.A. players by Mubarak Malik, fancies itself a better-for-you Gatorade with adaptogens; and Ghia, aperitifs and spritzes with nervines (herbs that purport to boost energy and alleviate stress), became an influencer favorite on Instagram. Droplet sells a three-can sampler of its sparkling adaptogen drinks, Pretty Balanced, Pretty Happy and Pretty Bright, for $20.

We may actually reach the tipping point for legalizing cannabis nationwide in the coming yearwhich would unleash a flood of change. New tax revenue alone is estimated at $128.8 billion, and legalization could result in 1.6 million new jobs. Research on cannabis therapeutics will explode. The economic impact will create disruption the likes of which Silicon Valley technologists could only dream of. Im keeping a close eye on this spaceanyone adjacent to health and wellness should do the same.
If weve learned anything in the pandemic, it's the need for resilience and the ability to adapt in the face of disruption and change. But consumers growing interest in natural and preventative health measures is, in my view, a positive development. Seeing health as a long-term commitment that involves daily choices, proactivity and self-care wont just drive marketsit will result in better health outcomes for everyone.

Dr. Jha highlights that stress is one of the biggest obstacles to focusing. In a high-alert state, we often start pondering and get stuck in loops of doom or imagined scenarios. In addition, this mode affects our working memory: the amount of information that our minds can hold and use for a task. Working memory is like a mental whiteboard with disappearing ink, explained Dr. Jha.
Once that whiteboard is filled with thoughts, feelings, and images relating to the root of our stress, theres no room for new data. We might start zoning out, blanking, or snapping at our loved ones, then feel guilty, which doesnt make focusing any easier it just makes it more challenging. Another issue is that we now have far more sources of distraction, like new apps, smartphones, and video games.
Short bursts of daily mindfulness training can help us notice the traffic of thoughts and urges that continuously distract us. One of these exercises involves sitting upright, closing your eyes, and focusing on where your breathing feels most prominent, typically in the chest or diaphragm. Direct your focus there like a beam of light and recognize when thoughts or sensations pull it away: a memory arising; a reminder that you need to reply to an email; an itch. Do this for 3 to 12 minutes every day, for one week.
While training your brain with simple daily exercises is very effective, some foods and beverages can also rejuvenate and boost the brain.
A pair of researchers discovered that a bioflavonoid called quercetin, found in pickled capers, can modulate proteins needed for bodily functions, including the heartbeat, brain, muscular contraction, thyroid, pancreas, and gastrointestinal tract.
Humans have used capers as traditional medicine for hundreds if not thousands of years. Scientists are studying them for their anti-cancer, anti-helminthic, anti-diabetic, and anti-inflammatory properties. Capers are the highest known natural source of quercetin, with a maximum concentration of 520 mg/100 g for canned capers and 323 mg/100 g quercetin for raw capers.
In a study published on July 8, 2020, in the journal Communications Biology, researchers from the Irvine School of Medicine at the University of California found that quercetin regulates potassium ion channels in the KCNQ gene family.
Potassium ion channels are incredibly influential in human health, and their malfunction is linked to many human diseases, such as epilepsy, cardiac arrhythmia, and diabetes.
The study revealed that quercetin regulates the KCNQ channels by modulating how they perceive electrical activity in the cell, suggesting an unexpected mechanism for capers therapeutic properties. Other quercetin-rich foods and quercetin-based nutritional supplements may also hold this mechanism.
An international group of scientists was inspired by the idea that mammals brain structure and function are likely shaped by evolving with exposure to particular diets. So, they conducted a study that focused on whether bioactive factors (natural compounds) found in apples directly affect hippocampal neurogenesis (the production of new brain cells) in the adult mouse.
The team led by Tara Louise Walker from the University of Queensland and Gerd Kempermann from the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases found that high concentrations of phytonutrients from apples could help boost brain function (learning and memory) by stimulating neurogenesis.
Phytonutrients are chemical substances in plants known to affect the body, including the brain, positively. Examples of phytonutrients include epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) in green tea and resveratrol in red grapes skin, which is linked to a reduced risk of age-related conditions such as cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.
The researchers found that its the quercetin (a flavonol in apple peel) and 3,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid found in apple flesh that does the work. The team used lab-grown stem cells from adult mouse brains. They added the phytonutrients commonly found in apples to the cell cultures. The brain cells were protected from death and generated more neurons when exposed to quercetin or dihydroxy benzoic acid (DHBA).
Further experiments with mice showed that stem cells multiplied and produced more neurons in distinct brain structures associated with memory and learning when the animals were given high doses of quercetin or DHBA. The effects were comparable to those experienced after physical exercise, an established stimulus for neurogenesis.
This studys takeaway is that natural compounds in the fruit, especially quercetin and DHBA, could promote better brain function when given high concentrations. However, further analysis is needed to prove if phytonutrients can enhance learning and cognitive function.
A 2019 study led by researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS), in collaboration with researchers from the University of Essex and University of Cambridge, found that regular tea drinkers have better-organized brain regions than non-tea drinkers. Methylene Blue has since been used to treat dementia, in cancer chemotherapy, malaria, methemoglobinemia, urinary tract infections, cyanide and carbon monoxide poisoning.[iii]
As a nootropic, Methylene Blue is used to enhance mitochondrial function, increase cerebral blood flow, and acts as an antidepressant.
Methylene Blue boosts brain health and function in several ways. But two in particular stand out.
Studies show dramatic increases of cellular oxygen consumption and glucose uptake when using Methylene Blue. MB increases CMRO2 (cerebral metabolic rate) through increased activity in the mitochondrial electron transport chain.

Methylene Blue binds to superoxide and reduces it to water. It stops the oxidative cascade at its very beginning. Before it gets a chance to do damage.[v]

Alzheimers disease and other forms of dementia are associated with a buildup of the protein Tau. Clinical trials show that Methylene Blue inhibits Tau formation. And is under consideration as a treatment for Alzheimers.[xi]
Methylene Blue has an inhibitory action on the cGMP pathway, and affects other molecular events closely related to the progression of Alzheimers.
Methylene Blue boosts neuron resistance to the formation of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. And helps repair impairments in mitochondrial function and cellular metabolism.

Methylene Blue helps prevent premature senescence or premature cell death.
Animal studies have shown that a single low dose of Methylene Blue enhances long-term contextual memory. This type of memory is the conscious recall of the source and circumstances of a specific memory.
Other studies show that Methylene Blue in low doses taken after the event helps memory retention of the event. A study done with rats revealed why this works.
In this study, rats received 1 mg/kg of MB post-training for 3 days. The researchers then measured cytochrome c oxidation in participants brains. The idea was to determine if an increase in metabolic energy was behind the memory enhancing qualities of MB.
The study found that in the Methylene Blue treated group, brain cytochrome oxidase activity was 70% higher than in the placebo-treated group.
The findings suggest that repeated post-training supplementation of Methylene Blue improves memory consolidation. And this memory boost is due to the increased metabolic capacity in brain regions that require more energy during discrimination learning.[xv]

A study conducted at Childrens Hospital Oakland Research Institute may have found the solution to this mitochondrial energy problem in brain cells.
The researchers found that Methylene Blue can prevent or slow the decline of mitochondrial function.
One of the key aspects of Alzheimers is mitochondrial dysfunction. Specifically complex IV dysfunction. And this is where Methylene Blue steps in.
The study found that Methylene Blue enhances complex IV in mitochondria. It increases oxygen consumption. And it reverses premature cell death.
The researchers concluded that Methylene Blue may be useful to delay mitochondrial dysfunction with aging and the decrease in complex IV in Alzheimers disease.[xvii]
26 healthy volunteers aged 22 62 participated in a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial. Purpose of the study was to measure the effects of Methylene Blue on working memory and sustained attention.
Study results showed that a single low-dose of Methylene Blue resulted in an increase in short-term memory ability. In an area of the brain associated with the senses and visual processing.
Timothy Duong, Ph.D., the study author concluded Methylene Blue showed promise in healthy aging, cognitive impairment, dementia and other conditions that might benefit from drug-induced memory enhancement.[xviii]
Another study published in the American Journal of Psychiatry tested fear extinction (elimination of fear) and contextual memory. Both are forms of long-term memory.
In this study, participants received either Methylene Blue or a placebo after being placed in a small dark chamber for a couple of minutes to address their fear.
One month later, participants that had used Methylene Blue had less retained fear than those given a placebo. The study authors concluded, Methylene Blue enhances memory and the retention of fear extinction.[xix]
Increasing evidence shows that Bipolar Disorder may be a progressive condition. Dealing with bipolar symptoms long-term can result in deterioration of the cortex and less gray matter.
A study at Dalhousie University in Halifax compared the effectiveness of lamotrigine (Lamictal) along with daily supplementation of either 195 mg or 15 mg of Methylene Blue in patients with Bipolar Disorder.
Patients took a dose (Lamictal and either 195 mg or 15 mg of Methylene Blue) for three months. Then switched to the other dose for 3 months. The team found that bipolar participants had reduced depression and anxiety when taking the higher dose of Methylene Blue compared to when they were on the lower dose.
Several Bipolar Disorder patients in the study chose to continue using Methylene Blue after the study concluded.[xx]
Recommended safe doses based on clinical studies with animals and humans ranges from 0.5 4 mg/kg. So a 90 kg (200 lb.) body weight translates to 45 360 mg of Methylene Blue.
45 mg of Methylene Blue is a safe starting dose. But 360 mg of MB is much too high in my opinion even if youre 200 lbs.
The bottom line is there is no true recommended dose for Methylene Blue. My recommendation is start with the lowest dose of 0.5 mg/kg and see how you react.
Methylene Blue is water-soluble so you dont need to take it with a meal, or healthy fat like some nootropics.
Methylene Blue has a half-life of about 5 hours. So you can dose twice a day.
Methylene Blue is famous for turning urine blue. But for most neurohackers, your urine will only stain blue at doses roughly exceeding 500 mcg. Some recommend preventing blue urine by mixing Methylene Blue with ascorbic acid for 3 hours before taking it.
Methylene Blue is also available as a doctor-administered injection for therapeutic use. Typically used to treat diseases like malaria or with anti-cancer therapy.
Methylene Blue shows a hormetic dose-response, with opposite effects at low and high doses.
In other words, lower doses of Methylene Blue work well as a nootropic. But high doses do not because MB can potentially steal electrons away from the electron transport chain. Disrupting the redox balance and acting as a pro-oxidant (instead of an antioxidant).[xxi]
Adverse effects of Methylene Blue also come from chemical impurity. Even pharmaceutical (USP) grade Methylene Blue can contain impurities like arsenic, aluminum, cadmium, mercury and lead.
At low doses, these contaminants are not that big of a problem. But higher doses will result in the accumulation of these toxins in your cells.
Side effects with Methylene Blue are rare when doses are under 2 mg/kg. But can include stomach pain, chest pain, dizziness, headache, sweating, confusion, high blood pressure, shortness of breath, accelerated heartbeat, tremor, skin turning blue, urine turning blue or green, reduction of red blood cells, or jaundice (only reported in infants).
Monoamine Oxidase (MAOI) inhibition becomes a big problem at around 2 mg/kg of Methylene Blue. So if you are using antidepressants or antianxiety medications that affect dopamine or serotonin, you should NOT use Methylene Blue. Because using Methylene Blue with one of these medications could cause a hypertensive crisis or Serotonin Syndrome.
