Lexus Partners With TED To Contemplate The Future Of Automated Vehicles – HotCars

Posted: at 8:57 am

TED Senior Fellows Greg Gage and Sarah Sandman share original ideas for automated vehicles that prioritize the needs of the driver.

As all manufacturers try to figure out automated driving, Lexus wanted to think outside the box, and thus brought in some big thinkers from the TED Fellows program who areknown to be good at that sort of thing. TED Senior Fellows neuroscientist and engineer Greg Gage and artist Sarah Sandman each presented their designs for Human Centric automated vehicles along with two short films covering their ideas: Predicting Human Needs with Neuroscientist Greg Gage and Building Community with Artist Sarah Sandman".

As might be expected from a neuroscientist, Gage believes automated vehicles and long commutes provide the perfect environment for neurotechnology to create a brain-car interface that allows the automobile to be integrated directly into how the driver feels. By recording a range of human signals, from human EKG to face microgestures.

Gage envisions that Lexus could create a profile of a persons mood and use it to change the ambience of the car. Sleepy? The car will change the lights and seating position. Relaxed? The car will cue up a chill playlist. Stressed? The radio is silenced and lights up. If current cars can monitor engine temperature, oil pressure, and engine speed, then a human-inspired car could monitor the human and respond accordingly.

RELATED:Lexus ES Vs GS: The Pros And Cons

Sandman was focused on the idea of a future where the vehicle tries to dissuade drivers/ riders who could be even more focused on our phones and digital devises than we are already. Thus, she imagines a vehicle that reduces our isolation from the outside world with 360-windows, fully rotational seats, and a speaker system for interaction with cyclists or pedestrians. Taking this idea even further, she imagines a chalk-writing system to leave custom art or messages in the street.

To increase quality time with passengers, the interior would mimic a cozy cafe with a digital fireplace, pillows, and a terrarium-like ceiling. Sandman also proposes a cooperative ownership model that increases affordability and makes for a more inclusive, meaningful future.

Difficult as it is to see how either of these approaches can apply to actual Lexus models, both sides feel energized by the project. Says Shoham Arad, Director of the TED Fellows program, TEDs partnership with Lexus highlights the essence of what the TED Fellows program stands for curiosity, new ideas, and building a world together that we all want to live in. We are excited to see the imaginative work of TED Fellows come to life through this TED + Lexus virtual conversation, fun discovery session and spotlight films. What does the future of human-centered design look like? Even in an automated universe? Watch to find out.

From the Lexus side, Lisa Materazzo, Vice President of Lexus marketing, stated: Focusing on what makes people tick, especially when behind the wheel, has always been central to Lexus design. Partnering with TED has allowed us to explore new human-centric ideas for an automated future with visionary experts in their fields.

Reduction in Insomnia Symptoms Associated with Non-invasive Neurotechnology – Newswise

Posted: September 19, 2020 at 10:06 pm

Newswise For people with chronic insomnia, a good nights sleep is elusive. But what if insomnia symptoms could be alleviated by simply listening to ones own brainwaves?

Researchers at Wake Forest Baptist Health conducted a clinical trial that showed reduced insomnia symptoms and improved autonomic nervous system function using a closed-loop, acoustic stimulation neurotechnology. The study is published in the September 17 online edition of the journal Brain and Behavior.

High-resolution, relational, resonance-based electroencephalic mirroring (HIRREM) uses scalp sensors to monitor brainwaves and software algorithms to translate specific frequencies into audible tones of varying pitch in real time.

These tones linked to brainwaves are echoed back instantaneously via ear buds. This allows the brain a chance to listen to itself, to look at itself in an acoustic mirror.

Sleep is foundational for optimal health, healing and well-being, said principal investigator Charles H. Tegeler, M.D., chair of neurology at Wake Forest School of Medicine, part of Wake Forest Baptist Health.

HIRREM is a unique non-drug, noninvasive, acoustic neuromodulation intervention that supports the brain to balance and quiet itself. Our results show durable benefit for both reduced symptoms of insomnia and significantly improved objective measures of autonomic function.

HIRREM technology supports the brain to self-adjust, to reset from what may have become stuck trauma and stress patterns, believed to contribute to insomnia, Tegeler said. The brain pattern is observed to shift toward improved balance and reduced hyperarousal with no conscious, cognitive activity required.

According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, about 30 to 35% of Americans have experienced insomnia, which can reduce life expectancy and increase the risk of cardiovascular events, obesity, diabetes and other illnesses.

The study included 107 adult men and women with moderate to severe insomnia. Approximately half received the HIRREM intervention, and the placebo group received an active intervention of random tones. All participants kept a daily sleep diary, and each received 10, 60-minute intervention sessions (either HIRREM or placebo), over a three-week period.

In the study, changes were recorded on the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), a self-reporting instrument to assess insomnia symptoms. Researchers also recorded heart rate and blood pressure to objectively analyze autonomic cardiovascular regulation.

After completion of the intervention sessions and at follow-up visits up to four months later, subjects in the HIRREM group reported clinically meaningful reductions for insomnia symptoms. Four months following the intervention, 78% of those receiving HIRREM reported no significant insomnia symptoms. They also showed significant, durable improvements in autonomic function across multiple objective measures of heart rate variability (HRV) and baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) compared to those who received random tones. HRV is a powerful biometric that reflects the health of the autonomic nervous system, and BRS measures blood pressure regulation.

In this study, the HIRREM participants were five times more likely than placebo to have improvement in their HRV measured as rMSSD by more than 50%. They were also twice as likely to have improved BRS by more than 50% compared to placebo.

These changes may lead to long-term improvement in the cardiovascular health of the participants, Tegeler said. There were no serious adverse events, and less than 6% of study participants dropped out.

These findings add to the rapidly growing interest in neuromodulation and demonstrate that a brief intervention with closed-loop acoustic stimulation can improve sleep in a meaningful way, while also improving autonomic function, Tegeler said. Its an important alternative approach for people who suffer from insomnia.

This study was supported by a research grant from The Susanne Marcus Collins Foundation, Inc.

HIRREM, the legacy technology of Cereset, was developed and licensed by Brain State Technologies of Scottsdale, Ariz.

Sarah Breinbauer

A new project that forms a data visualization of brain signals in clothing has recently been showcased at thevirtual Ars Electronica festival.

The robotic dress is coupled to 1,024 channels of a BCI (Brain-Computer Interface) and has 64 outputs for light and movement. The Pangolin Scales' dress components function like animatronic elements that move and light up based on the recordings of the brain waves.

The project originated at the Institute for integrated circuits at JKU (Johannes Kepler University, Linz, Austria), in collaboration with the Austrian Neurotechnology company G.tec.

Christoph Guger at the Neuroscience/Neurotechnology department at G.tec explained how these BCI's measure brain activity, using sensors placed on the head, which control devices in real-time depending on your thoughts;

"If someone imagines a hand movement, then that movement can be understood using sensors on the upper region of the brain. The technology then produces a control signal that allows you for example to control a prosthetic arm or to control any (human-like) avatar.

By using your thoughts you can move the avatar forward (left right - forward etc.) or use your prosthetic arm after you made the mental decision that you wanted to pick up a cup of coffee."

G.tec's neurotechnology developers designed the hardware components and assemble the electrodes directly on to the head. The shape and size of the components mean that 1,024 channels can be placed on to the head to give far greater resolution than previous versions.

Guger continues:

"In hospitals or research centers, people can wear 64 of these channels so the distance between the sensors is pretty big. This allows us to figure out if the person is lifting their left or right arm, but that's it.

With 1024 channels we can discriminate single fingers from each other. So the technology can recognize if the person moves their pinkie finger or the index finger. This is something you cannot do with a standard EEG system which is nowadays used in research and in hospitals."

The dress was designed by Dutch designer and innovatorAnouk Wipprecht, who works in the emerging field of FashionTech. This combines fashion design with engineering, robotics, science, and interaction/user experience design to make fashion an experience that transcends appearances.

The dress that has 64 actuators (scales) that move and light up. The BCI output can modulate the movement and the rotation of the scales and how they light and interact. So whatever is calibrated into the brain-computer interface can be recognized afterward.

So, in understanding how the EEG of every single action works, the BCI can be calibrated to produce real-time activity of what the brain is doing and control the actions in the dress.

There are 64 PCBs on the head each with 16 sensors (to reach 1,024 channels). These 64 outputs translate the received signals from the brain and visualize this data through light and movement provided by 32 LEDs and 32 small servo motors, making 64 actuators within the dress.

This results in a dress with a mechanism that functions like animatronic elements, based on pangolin scales, which move and light up based on the recordings of the brain waves.

Thomas Faseth of JKU (Johannes Kepler University Linz), where the project originated, said:

"Future applications of the project allow full wireless operation made possible by know-how of the Institute for Integrated Circuits at JKU Linz."

Guger added:

"The brain decodes information in very specific places. Faces, color, shapes, are decoded in certain areas, and art is activating a lot of them.

BCI technology allows us to explore unconsciousness things of the brain in real-time and this leads to astonishing results. Fascinating about the brain is that so many regions are unexplored and with newest high-resolution technology we can find new interesting functions."

This is only a prototype of course, but this technology has many more functions as the relationship between the body and technology grows closer than ever.

Designers, artists, scientists, and engineers started to combine their practices at the beginning of this century, and electronics are being tightly woven into the fabric of our physical world.

As Wipprecht said:

"Electronic systems can now be layered seamlessly onto a material or substrate such as plastic or polyester. Embedded processors and sensors for transmitting and receiving information create a vision of cultural transformation that is both exciting and disturbing."
