Adventures In Nanotech: Growing A Metallic Snowflake
Posted: December 28, 2022 at 11:22 pm
Eddie Gonzales Jr. MessageToEagle.com Scientists in New Zealand and Australia working at the level of atoms created something unexpected: tiny metallic snowflakes.
Whys that significant? Because coaxing individual atoms to cooperate is leading to a revolution in engineering and technology via nanomaterials. (And creating snowflakes is cool.)
This metallic snowflake is about 100 microns across, roughly the thickness of a human hair. Image source
Nanoscale structures (a nanometre is one billionth of a metre) can aid electronic manufacturing, make materials stronger yet lighter, or aid environmental clean-ups by binding to toxins.
To create metallic nanocrystals, New Zealand and Australian scientists have been experimenting with gallium,a soft, silvery metal which is used in semiconductors and, unusually, liquifies at just above room temperature.
Their results were just reported in the journal Science.
Professor Nicola Gaston and research fellow Dr Steph Lambie, both of Waipapa Taumata Rau, University of Auckland, and Dr Krista Steenbergen of Te Herenga Waka, Victoria University of Wellington, collaborated with colleagues in Australia led by Professor Kourosh Kalantar-Zadeh at the University of New South Wales.
The Australian team worked in the lab with nickel, copper, zinc, tin, platinum, bismuth, silver and aluminium. Metals were dissolved in gallium at high temperatures. Once cooled, the metallic crystals emerged while the gallium remained liquid.
The New Zealand team, part of the MacDiarmid Institute for Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology, a national Centre of Research Excellence, carried out simulations of molecular dynamics to explain why differently shaped crystals emerge from different metals. (The governments Marsden Fund supported the research.)
What we are learning is that the structure of the liquid gallium is very important, says Gaston. Thats novel because we usually think of liquids as lacking structure or being only randomly structured.
Interactions between the atomistic structures of the different metals and the liquid gallium cause differently shaped crystals to emerge, the scientists showed.
The crystals included cubes, rods, hexagonal plates and the zinc snowflake shapes. The six-branched symmetry of zinc, with each atom surrounded by six neighbours at equivalent distances, accounts for the snowflake design.
In contrast to top-down approaches to forming nanostructure by cutting away material this bottom-up approaches relies on atoms self-assembling, says Gaston. This is how nature makes nanoparticles, and is both less wasteful and much more precise than top-down methods.
She says the research has opened up a new, unexplored pathway for metallic nanostructures. Theres also something very cool in creating a metallic snowflake!

Where to Buy SARMs for Sale | 6 Best Vendors | Oct 2022 – Nanotech Project

If you want to buy SARMs for sale, you need to make sure you get them from a high quality sourceotherwise you could get low quality, fake products.
Theres dozens of SARMs suppliers out there though, all claiming theyre the best source. How are you supposed to know which vendor to trust?
Well, weve bought over $5,000 worth of SARMs online, so weve seen it alland with that in mind, we want to talk the best sources online.
So, if you want to know where to get high quality SARMs for sale, without getting scammed, then read this article from start to finish for the truth.
As we said, theres dozens of SARMs vendors out there, all claiming theyre the best supplier on the marketunfortunately, most SARMs are fake.
Finding high quality, pure SARMs these days is very hardmainly because theres so much money in being a vendor who has fake SARMs for sale.
In fact, according to a recent report by the JAMA Medical Journal, only 52% of products labeled as containing SARMs actually contained them. [R]
Unfortunately, many SARMs vendors sell under-dosed, low quality products, or even choose to lace them with dangerous prohormones.
Shop The #1 SARMs Vendor
Its for this reason that you should always buy SARMs from a vendor that has third party verification. This is where they send their SARMs to an independent laboratory for testing, to ensure their purity.
The easiest way to find out if a company has high quality SARMs is whether or not they have third party verification. These days, any supplier can say they have the best SARMs on the market, but without third party verification, theres no way to know this.
So, what is third party verification? Its when a SARMs supplier sends each batch of their research chemicals off to an independent laboratory, which will test it for purity. Often the best SARMs suppliers will have certificates or reports of these lab test results on their websites, so you know theyre legit.
The bottom line is thisif a SARMs company doesnt have third party verification, theres a high likelihood that their SARMs are fake, low quality, and not worth your time.
Another way to test if a place has quality SARMs or not, is if theres actual user reviewsand no, I dont mean people just saying some companys SARMs were good. I mean people actually posting their RESULTS.
Theres a reason why we have over 14 SARMs before and after pictures that weve posted hereanyone can say they took a SARM and got a ton of benefits. But the proof is in the puddingwithout actual pictures, it could just be BS.
Every supplier is going to say they have the best SARMs for sale, but without results and posts by users on bodybuilding forums, Reddit, and blogs, showcasing increases in muscle mass and lean muscle, theres no REAL way of knowing if theyre legit or not.
If youre just skimming, and looking for the #1 company to buy SARMs products from, we highly recommend Pure Rawz. Their third party testing is second to none, and their products are always high quality.
Now that weve emphasized the importance of getting SARMs from a source that has third party testing available, lets explore the best SARMs vendors, and well tell you who we think the best SARMs company is in 2022.
All of the vendors on this list have been carefully picked by our team, and every one of them ensures a minimum of 98% purity of their SARMs.
Here are the best vendors to buy SARMs for sale from online:
Each one of these SARMs vendors has high quality products, fast shipping, and great customer supportand the results people get are incredible, too. For more information, read our full Pure Rawz Review Article.
First up on the list is Pure Rawz, which is by far the best SARMs company out there, and its the best place to buy SARMs that we always recommend above all else, here at Nanotech. We used to recommend Science Bio as #1, but unfortunately theyre shutting down.
Heres what we like about Pure Rawz:
Pure Rawz has made a name for itself over the past several years, due to their outstanding customer loyalty program, which gives you store credit. Theyre also one of the few companies that has been around since the very beginning, too (for well over 5 years).
Buy From Pure Rawz
We love this SARMs company so much that we asked for a discount code, and they gave us oneif you use MD15 youll get 15% off your order.
Here are the prices of SARMs from Pure Rawz:
The great thing about this SARMs source is they have multiple stacks of SARMs you can buy, more than any other SARMs company on the market does currently (you can verify this by researching SARMs suppliers).

In fact, we love this SARMs vendor so much that we reached out and asked for a coupon code to give you guysuse the code MD15 for 15% off. This will apply to any of the SARMs that theyre selling on their site.
Buy From Nootropics Unlimited
All of their SARMs for sale are Third party verified, meaning that every batch is tested by an independent laboratory to ensure at least 98% purity.
Here are the prices of Nootropics Unlimited SARMs for sale:
Keep in mind that thats before the 25% discount we gave you, AND you can buy SARMs from them for even cheaper if you choose the bulk options that they have for sale.
For more information, read our full Amino Asylum review article.
One of the reasons we really like this company is because they have such a wide range of products for sale. From research chemicals to therapeutic compounds, anabolic steroids, CBD oil, and more, their product catalog is STACKED.
Heres why we like Amino Asylum:
Amino Asylum is definitely one of the newer SARMs suppliers on the block, but theyre very quickly starting to build up a good reputation for their company, due to many customers giving raving reviews for their products.
Buy From Amino Asylum
While the company is relatively new, and not many people have posted their results yet, the results that some users have posted on Reddit and other bodybuilding forums are extremely promising so far.
For more information, read our full Chemyo review article here.
Chemyo is perhaps the oldest SARMs company out there theyve been around since the 90s.
Any company thats been around for that long definitely gets a vote of confidence from us. As most scammy SARMs companies (like SARMs4You) end up getting shut down within a matter of 2-3 years.
Not Chemyo, though. Theyve built up a quality reputation over the years for selling real SARMs at a good price, fast shipping, great customer support, and for being an overall reputable company.
Heres what we like about Chemyo:
One thing we really like about this company is their pre-mixed SARMs stack supplements. Sometimes when youre taking a stack, it can be annoying to take 3-4 separate vials each morning, but with Chemyo, they have pre-mixed combinations that are easy to use.
Buy from Chemyo
Best of all, we reached out to them and got you a coupon code. Just use the code nano20 at checkout and youll save 20% off any of their SARMs, research chemicals, liquids, peptides, capsules, and powders.
NOTE: Science Bio has since shut down and we are searching for a replacement
Science Bio is another great SARMs vendor to buy from, due to their huge product catalog, lightning fast shipping, and awesome customer support. Not only do they have research chemicals for sale, but they also sell CBD products, kratom, and even different adaptogenic mushrooms.
Heres what we like about Science Bio:
Out of all the companies on this list, PureRawz probably has the most products available in their catalogseriously, its kind of insane. They sell everything from SARMs to kratom to CBD, and have all kinds of different forms of administration like transdermals, powders, liquids, capsules, and more.
Buy From Science Bio
Despite being number six on our list, Science Bio is still one of our favorite SARMs suppliers due to their extremely wide product catalog. Theyve got andarine, cardarine, LGD 4033, and of course, three SARMs that have attracted many clinical trials. [R] [R] [R]
In conclusion, these six companies are the best SARMs sources on the market right now, with pure products, great prices, and fast shipping.
Pure Rawz is our favorite SARMs source out of this entire list, due to the excellent company reputation, great products quality, competitive prices, and brilliant customer support.
Shop The #1 SARMs Vendor
If you want to get 15% off on SARMs, just use the code MD15 with Pure Rawz and youll save 15% off on any SARMs you choose to buy.
Remember that SARMs are not approved for human use by the FDA (yet, at least), these SARMs are only to be used for personal research purposes.
Now that weve looked at some of the best places to buy SARMs online, lets turn our attention to what SARMs are all about and how they can help you build muscle and burn fat.
SARMs, short for Selective androgen receptor modulators, are compounds that target androgen receptors.
Unlike steroids, which bind to androgenic receptors throughout the body, SARMs are more selective in their approach. They target androgen receptors in certain tissues, sparing the others.
That is precisely the reason why SARMs produce fewer side effects than anabolic steroids or prohormones.
Interestingly, the first SARM Andarine was discovered pretty much accidentally. James Dalton, an American drug discovery scientist, identified the molecule while researching prostate cancer treatments.
While Andarine didnt seem to have any effect on prostate cancer in the human body, it was found to stimulate muscle growth.
SARMs bind to androgen receptors in your bone cells and muscle tissue. Unlike anabolic steroids, they do not disturb the non-skeletal muscle tissue.
This limits SARMs anabolic (muscle building) activity to muscle tissue, enhancing their effectiveness at increasing lean muscle mass while also reducing the backlash from other organs, such as the prostate and liver.
Clinical studies have shown as much. SARMs have been proven to stimulate muscle growth, reduce body fat and increase bone density. It has been shown that these effects could be enhanced by concomitant exercise. [R] [R]
Every SARMs vendor claims to sell highly effective and pure SARMs. However, as the JAMA report quoted above shows, only a few are legitimate SARMs suppliers.
In this article, weve provided you with 6 vendors that have built solid reputations with high-quality products. All of these are trusted sources to buy your favorite SARMs online.
To recap things, here are the best suppliers to buy SARMs from in 2022:
If you use the discount code MD15 for any of these companies, youll get anywhere from 10% to 25% off, so be sure to remember to use your discount code!

Melodea replaces plastic and aluminum coatings in packaging – Green Prophet
Posted: October 19, 2022 at 3:28 pm
A small bag of apple chips. A dry granola bar. Some nuts. A bag of coffee beans. A small baggie of medical cannabis. Even if youre a conscientious consumer, its hard, almost impossible to not indulge in single-use plastics. Even if the outer side is paper, the inside will almost always be a non-biodegradable aluminum and plastic coating to keep moisture out and the oil in. So whats the point if its not sustainable all the way?
A company from Israel called Melodea has started working in the US to produce a sustainable barrier coatings for packaging. Israeli super-entrepreneur Oded Shoseyov is on the board. Melodea joins plastic packaging alternatives from Israel already in the market: TIPA, the first plastics alternative from Israel on the market in 2011 and which handles wet products, and W-Cycle.
One of the greatest strains on the ecology of our sweet planet is plastic waste. Its choking the sea and microplastics are turning up in human breast milk and in the air we breathe. Of the millions of tons of plastic waste generated each year, single-use plastic packaging is the worst culprit. Melodea hopes to help solve the problem.
It produces barrier coating material sourced from wood pulp, a sidestream of the paper-making industry. Its solution is helping food, beverage, and consumer goods packagers sever unwanted ties with plastic.
Plastic has long been necessary to maintain food freshness, acting as a barrier to prevent unwanted transmission of oxygen, water, oil, or grease into the products.
Melodea developed a unique formula derived from cellulose (called CNC, or nanocellulose) that can withstand high humidity and protects packed products from oxygen, water, oil, and grease. This sturdy but lightweight plant material offers an alternative to plastic and aluminum for maintaining the quality and integrity of packaged foods. As a forestry by-product, it also is biodegradable, fully recyclable, and non-toxic to people or the environment. The material currently is being used in paper-based pouches, lids, and molded pulp trays.
All of Melodeas barrier coatings are in compliance with FDA regulations for food packaging and will now be manufactured in the United States.
CNC from naturally abundant and renewable cellulose is emerging as one of the most promising green solutions to help replace environmentally harmful materials, says Shaul Lapidot, CEO of Melodea. The new plant, combined with our newly established ties in the US, can potentially triple our manufacturing capacity to meet amplified demands. It also will shorten the travel and subsequent carbon footprint by bringing production closer to our main markets in South America and the US.
Melodea recently forged a new commercial deal with a major manufacturer of plant-based fiber solutions in its mission to eliminate single-use plastics. The company will produce and market various packaging products infused with Melodeas VBcoat moisture barrier. The first product to be rolled out is an eco-friendly, high-performing molded pulp tray for leafy greens designed to replace existing plastic-based formats.
Melodea estimates it will be ready to start shipping locally from the US site within the next 3 to 6 months as it initiates production of its novel barrier coatings with a local US partner.
The global nanocellulose market is currently worth approximately US$346M and is projected to grow to US$963M by 2026. Driven by consumers demands for eco-supportive packaging solutions, nanocellulose is gaining traction among retailers differentiating themselves by decreasing the impact of their products on the environment.
North America boasts the highest market share of the global flexible packaging market, with some of the largest international market players in the field of paper-based packaging headquartered there.
Melodea has so far raised a total of US$20M in capital. The company wasy founded as a spin-off project initiated at the Hebrew university of Jerusalem in 2010 in Israel by Shaul Lapidot together with Tord Andres an expert from the composites world, and Oded Shoseyov, a serial super-entrepreneur and expert in Nano materials and plant biotechnology. He is on Melodeas advisory board. And has founded 18 companies to date.
Other nanotech companies Shoseyov has helped found areSP Nano, Valentis Nanotech(nano-bio-based transparent films for food packaging and agriculture),Paulee CleanTec(transforming pet and human waste into sterile powdered fertilizer),GemmaCert (fast cannabis plant analysis), Biobetter (producing therapeutic antibodies on tobacco plants), Second Skin, Cannabi-Tech (standardization tools for medical cannabis products) and BondX (environmentally friendly bio-additives for the paper industry).
Our CNC is sustainably produced, recycling about 95% of the materials in the process, and its superior performance has been verified by academic research. CNC has great potential to turn the tide on the cascade of negative impacts from plastic pollution that have been a pressing environmental issue for too long, says Zvika Weiss, CFO of Melodea.

SUNY Poly training program seeks behind-the-scenes workers from all walks of life – Times Union
Posted: October 15, 2022 at 5:53 pm
ALBANY - Michael Fancher has spent his career in the semiconductor industry trying to figure out how to bridge the "valley of death."
That's a metaphor for the major hurdles that await technologists and inventors trying to bring their products to market. Those pitfalls often involve getting start-up funding or late-stage capital needed to begin volume manufacturing.
Fancher works at SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Albany where he is director of the school's Advanced Manufacturing Performance, or AMP Center. He is also director of the New York State Center for Advanced Technology in Nanomaterials and Nanoelectronics, which is also at SUNY Poly.
He is working these days on bridging the workforce gap for New York's growing semiconductor economy through a new training program called the Career Alignment Platform, or CAP.
CAP is designed as an open house employment platform - a place where anyone from anywhere, from those living in disadvantaged communities, to trade workers and factory workers, can explore jobs of the future.
Are these jobs out there?
They are and there will be more.
GlobalFoundries is expanding its Fab 8 campus to add a second computer chip factory. Wolfspeed just opened its new fab outside Utica - and Micron Technology, the largest memory chip maker in the U.S. just announced it plans to spend $100 billion to build a massive chip factory in the Syracuse suburb of Clay.
Fancher says he imagines a plumber driving by Fab 8 or reading about it in the news and wondering: 'What if?'
"Is there a job up there for a plumber?" Fancher says. "How do I find out? Who do I call? What does that job look like? That is what CAP is designed to do." How are they going to feel there is a place for them within this enterprise from a workforce training perspective?"
At the Albany Nanotech campus on Fuller Road, where SUNY Poly is a major tenant, Fancher works with Maxwell Lippitt, senior project engineer for the AMP Center, on designing and building CAP.
They stress that the jobs they are training people for are not the cleanroom jobs that often dominate photos used in news stories about computer chip factories.
Instead they are training people for computer chip factory facilities jobs that are for people who are trained to operate the machines above and below the actual cleanroom, including the so-called sub-fab that is located below the cleanroom that feeds gases and chemicals to the machines that process the silicon wafers that are eventually cut up into individual chips.
Fancher, Lippitt and others have assembled decommissioned sub-fab machines alongside large video screens that broadcast tutorials on different aspects of the manufacturing process. Virtual and augmented reality is used in training, what Fancher calls the "gamification" of worker training.
"You can use animation to show particles of gas flowing through the tool," Fancher said. "We're going to continue to do more of this, but we're not going to do it all by ourselves. We're going to do it in partnership with industrial partners, so they get to use it, and we get to use it and the industry gets to use it."
CAP will pull workers from all walks of life. From community colleges, from factories, from small businesses. From the unemployment line.
And it will be key because the semiconductor industry is growing so quickly in upstate New York. Micron in Clay will need 9,000 workers, but the supply chain that will be required for the factory will employ 41,000 people with vendors and support jobs.
That is a big ask for upstate New York, which has only been a semiconductor manufacturing center now for about a decade when Fab 8 was built.
"Together, we are leveraging this investment the largest private-sector investment in state history to secure our economic future, solidify New York's standing as a global manufacturing hub, and usher the state into another industrial revolution," Gov. Kathy Hochul said when the Micron deal was announced on Oct. 4.

What They Are Reading in the States: Syracuse Post-Standard: Biden: Microns computer chip deal in Syracuse area another win for America – The White…
Posted: October 8, 2022 at 3:32 pm
New York outlets are reporting on Micron Technology Inc.s historic multi-billion dollar investment in Upstate New York to construct the largest semiconductor manufacturing facility in the U.S., creating tens of thousands of good paying jobs.
The announcement, which President Biden called another win for America, is just the latest investment in America spurred by the Presidents economic plan and his commitment to rebuilding American manufacturing. Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra credited the CHIPS and Science Act which President Biden signed into law this past August as being directly responsible for Microns investment in New York, saying in a statement that there is no doubt that without the CHIPS Act, we would not be here today.
It comes on the heels of last months pledge from Wolfspeed that it will invest $5 billion on a new chipmaking facility in North Carolina, and the groundbreaking of Intels new $20 billion facility in Ohio.
Read below for a sampling of the coverage:
Syracuse Post-Standard (Syracuse.com) : Biden: Microns computer chip deal in Syracuse area another win for AmericaTo those who doubted that America could dominate the industries of the future, I say this you should never bet against the American people, Biden said in a statement. Today is another win for America, and another massive new investment in America spurred by my economic plan, Biden said. Micron, an American company, is investing $20 billion dollars this decade and up to $100 billion over 20 years in chips manufacturing in Upstate New York, creating tens of thousands of good paying jobs. White House chief of staff Ron Klain called Microns commitment to build at White Pine Commerce Park in the town of Clay one of the largest industrial job-creating projects in U.S. history.
CNY Central: President, local lawmakers react to Micron choosing Central New York for plantPresident Biden is among those reacting to the announcement, releasing the following statement: To those who doubted that America could dominate the industries of the future, I say this you should never bet against the American people. Today is another win for America, and another massive new investment in America spurred by my economic plan. Micron, an American company, is investing $20 billion dollars this decade and up to $100 billion over twenty years in CHIPS manufacturing in upstate New York, creating tens of thousands of good paying jobs. Together, we are building an economy from the bottom up and the middle out, where we lower costs for our families and make it right here in America.
New York Daily News: Micron to build massive Syracuse, N.Y. factory; Schumer hails Erie Canal momentThe project was supercharged by bipartisan legislation, shepherded through the Senate by Schumer and signed by President Biden, that authorized more than $50 billion in semiconductor manufacturing investments. And it was boosted by a New York law signed by Hochul that created incentives of up to $10 billion for eco-friendly semiconductor manufacturing projects. Microns plan for the plant includes commitments to use 100% renewable electricity and to aim for zero landfill waste, among other green pledges. Microns chief executive, Sanjay Mehrotra, credited both the passage of the federal measure, called the CHIPS and Science Act, and the state Green CHIPS law for making the Clay project possible.
Spectrum NY1: Micron to open transformational chip plant in Syracuse suburb, bring thousands of jobsAfter years and years of hard work, its official. Micron is coming to Central New York. If theres a word to describe to today its transformational; for upstate New York, for America. It will be the most advanced chip manufacturer in America and probably the world, all here in Central New York, [Senate Majority Leader Chuck] Schumer said in a statement. We invented the chip in America and once again we are going to make them here in America. We will bring these jobs back from foreign shores and end our dependence on foreign chips.
WAER (Syracuse University, NY): Its official: Micron chip maker is moving in to the Town of ClayThe plan would create the largest semiconductor fabrication facility in the history of the U.S., according to a release from Micron. The company expects the project to create tens of thousands of jobs in the region over the next 20 years. U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said at the announcement hosted by Syracuse University the developments significance is similar to the 19th century opening of the Erie Canal, which brought an influx of jobs and industrial progress. New Yorkers and Americans will look back 50 years from now and remember this project as our Erie Canal moment, said Schumer, who was joined on stage by the governor, Onondaga County executive and Micron CEO.
Albany Times Union: Schumer unveils Microns plans to build $100 billion chip fab outside SyracuseMicron Technology, one of the worlds largest computer chip manufacturers, has picked the Syracuse suburbs for a new $100 billion semiconductor factory that could create 50,000 jobs and likely cements Albany Nanotech as the choice for a new billion-dollar national chip research lab. New York state has offered Micron $5 billion in state tax breaks to land what is the largest economic development deal in state history and one of the largest semiconductor projects in U.S. history. Micron would spend $20 billion through 2030 as it ramps up operations. Construction would begin in 2024. New York would add another $500 million in job training support.
The New York Times: Micron Pledges Up to $100 Billion for Semiconductor Factory in New YorkThe commitment by Micron is a sign that the federal governments prodding and package of generous incentives are helping to steer investment decisions. Legislation that passed in August, the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022, provides $52 billion in grants and subsidies for companies to build and expand computer chip factories in the country. There is no doubt that without the CHIPS Act, we would not be here today, said Sanjay Mehrotra, chief executive of Micron. The legislation, and favorable tax treatment and partnerships with state governments like New York, are key ingredients needed to match the subsidies offered by Asian nations and bring chip-making back to America, Mr. Mehrotra said
Associated Press: Micron to bring microchip plant to upstate New YorkMicron, one of the worlds largest microchip manufacturers, announced Tuesday it would open a semiconductor plant in upstate New York, promising a long-term investment of up to $100 billion and a plant that could bring 50,000 jobs to the state. The company was lured to the Syracuse area with help from a generous set of federal, state and local incentives, including up to $5.5 billion in state tax credits over 20 years.

Are Graphene Batteries the Future? – AZoNano
Posted: at 8:34 am
The most common criticism of electric vehicles (EVs) and smartphones is that they take too long to charge.

Why would anyone want to drive a car requiring more than a minute of recharging? Imagine, however, an electric vehicle with a battery that charges extremely quickly and has a long driving range, or visualize a smartphone that sets in under a minute. Although it might seem impossible, the advancements in graphene batteries are bringing these possibilities to life.
Lithium-based batteries are acknowledged as one of the promising substitutes for applications in energy storage due to their high energy density. These batteries power our computers, smartphones, and even our cars.
One issue that lithium-ion battery continues to have is safety. The liquid contained within a lithium-ion battery is highly flammable. Any damage to the battery's outer layers can result in a short circuit, leading to fire and explosion. For example, in 2016, a sudden burst of smartphones caused first-degree burns to several users worldwide.
Over the last few years, lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles have received an extensive cooling system. However, this cooling system takes up lots of space that could be utilized for energy storage.
Another problem with lithium-ion batteries is recyclability. Most of the parts in lithium-ion batteries are not biocompatible, making the recyclability process very expensive.
Lastly, the battery suffers from low power density. Take an example of a smartphone: because of its high energy density, the battery will last most of the day; to recharge the device, it must be connected to another power source for an hour or more.
Graphene is a one-atom-thick sheet of carbon atoms with a relative surface area of 2,630 m2/g, which is superior at storing charges with almost no degradation over long-term cycling. The bonds in graphene give graphene more than four times the tensile strength of steel while being super transparent, flexible, and an excellent conductor of electricity and heat. These properties make graphene a suitable candidate for not only battery but also supercapacitor
However, the graphene supercapacitor cannot store as much energy as a battery, but it can be fully recharged within minutes. Hence, to overcome the low energy density of graphene supercapacitors, scientists started working on the coupling of supercapacitors and batteries as hybrid energy storage systems.
In collaboration with Graphene Manufacturing Group, researchers at the University of Queensland Australia have developed a graphene-based hybrid battery prototype. This battery uses graphene and aluminum as electrode materials and is generally referred to as a graphene aluminum battery. The battery has an energy density of 150-160 Wh/kg, and it can be charged extremely fast within 1-5 minutes.
Furthermore, graphene aluminum-ion batteries offer significant advantages in terms of battery safety, recyclability, and longer battery life (over 2000 cycles) with almost no degradation in performance.
As per the latest information, the Graphene Manufacturing Group (GMG)has announced that it has manufactured its graphene aluminum-ion batteries in pouch cell format for use in smartphones, tablets, laptops, and more.
According to GMG, the theoretical energy limit of these batteries is about 1050 Wh/Kg. Thus, with further development, we can soon expect to reach the energy of graphene batteries more than commercial batteries.
The watershed moment in the development of graphene hybrid batteries came at the end of 2021, when California-based companyLytenannounced that they had developed a graphene battery for electric vehicles with an energy density three times the energy density of traditional lithium-ion batteries.
These batteries are lithium-sulfur (LiS) batteries which have long been touted as the next generation of rechargeable batteries. However, the challenge with real-world applications of Li-S batteries is the formation of soluble polysulfide species during discharge cycles. These intermediate species diffuse between the anode and cathode and cause internal short circuits. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as the shuttling effect, and it is responsible for the poor efficiency and quick capacity fading of the Li-S cells.
Lyten incorporated a 3D graphene membrane into the sulfur cathode to overcome this issue, which acted as an effective separator and reduced the cyclic capacity decay rate.
The product is named LytCell EV and was reported to deliver 900 Wh/kg energy density. Tests have apparently shown that a LytCell prototype can sustain more than 1,400 charge-discharge cycles.
PolyJoule, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) spin-off company, recently announced a new battery technology for high-power data center backup and power grid applications. The device is a two-electrode electrochemical cell with a carbon-graphene hybrid and a conductive polymer. The battery can discharge up to 1 MW of power in less than 10 seconds and recharge in less than five minutes. It has a voltage range of 158 V to 972 V and can operate continuously at temperatures ranging from -40 C to 50 C with minimal capacity loss.
When a Li-ion battery is shorted, it causes the battery to catch fire, which has raised concerns about its use in consumer products. This is due to the flammable electrolyte contained within the Li-ion battery. Nanotech Energy, based in the United States, has created a non-flammable graphene-based Li-ion battery pack that is both safe and environmentally friendly. They used graphene as an electrode material in their Li-battery and developed an inexpensive nonflammable electrolyte called OrganoLyteTM.
The battery is said to have an energy density of 162.5 Wh/kg and can withstand more than 1400 cycles (almost 10 years) at 80 percent capacity.
The battery is entirely fire resistant and suitable for all weather conditions. For comparison, traditional Li-batteries can only withstand 300-500 cycles (about two to three years). According to the latest updates, the company has begun taking pre-orders, and the battery may be customized for use in electric vehicles, computers, and military applications.
Tesla recently announced that their Model 3 battery has an energy density close to 260 Wh/kg. Still, it requires a complicated cooling system to prevent overheating and thus takes up a lot of space. On the other hand, because graphene batteries do not overheat or explode, there is no need for a cooling system, and the space could be used for energy-storing batteries in electric vehicles.
A breakthrough in graphene battery technology occurred when GAC Motor Co. Ltd, a Chinese automobile company, announced the launch of the AION V car, which features a graphene battery with a range of 1000 km and can be recharged to 80 percent capacity in 8 minutes. Undoubtedly the ongoing commercialization of graphene batteries will soon outperform conventional batteries for its wider adoption.

The Future of Nanotech, the World’s Tiniest Industry – Entrepreneur

Nanotechnology refers to the scientific study, research and reengineering of the properties of atoms and molecules. There's a great deal of controversy around this science, as it is intended to reshape the building blocks of matter. Like with all growing fields, there are costs and benefits, and due to its infinitely broad usage for applications, nanotech will impact our daily life in a profound way we have only started to see.
Introduced to the world in 1959 by physicist Richard Feynman, nanotechnology was conceptualized as synthesis through the reconstitution of atoms and molecules.
Over the past decade-and-a-half, nanotech has been one of the globe's fastest-growing industries, evolving each year significantly with great new applications. We've seen incredible innovation in energy, robotics, agriculture, health, computation, military intelligence and manufacturing. Those are just a small sampling of the sectors in which nanotech has been a great leader in advancement.

Through particle rescaling and manipulation, nanotech creates chemical bonds that are sometimes hundreds of times more potent than steel. These bonds increase a material's surface area, allowing for more atoms to interact with it, making the material more robust, more conductive and more malleable than its natural-sized counterparts. How the particles are manipulated affects how dense or light, big or small, visible or transparent, reflective or absorptive to waves a nanotech product is. The objects of particle manipulation are referred to as nanomaterials.
Nanomaterials are classified into two main categories: naturally occurring (such as blood hemoglobin) and artificially developed (such as quantum dots). Of the artificially generated nanomaterials, there are four common types: carbon-based, metal-based, dendrimers and nanocomposites. While carbon-based and metal-based nanomaterials are formed through the chemical manipulation of elements to derive micro-matter constructs, dendrimers either expand outwardly from a strong core or inwardly from a solid outer shell, and nanocomposites combine different nanomaterials and larger-scale high-volume materials. To be considered a nanomaterial, the engineering must operate within the parameters of a nanoscale's nanometer, which translates to a billionth of a meter.
Nanotechnology is already widely present in our daily life. You may not realize it, but it is in everything from textiles to food packaging to transportation. For example, in recent years, nanotech has been used to create lightweight road, sea, air and space vehicles. In the medical sector, nanotech has allowed for better imaging tools, diagnostic technology and even within medicine itself, including delivering antigens to compromised cells while avoiding healthy cells. And how was that accomplished? The answer might seem like it's out of the pages of sci-fi-- but it's happening today.
Nanobots are nanoscopic machines programmed to deliver a specific task. They've been functional on both bioorganic matter and inorganic matter and have been central in many of today's significant advancements in virology, clean energy, water filtration and 3D printing. Nanobots can deliver medicine, move as a unit to improve the source collection of wind and solar resources, clean contaminated water and link together to replicate a 3D object and enact the point of its function.
Currently, nanotech is researching several world-changing initiatives. Self-repair of structural surfaces is now in the testing phase. This could be revolutionary for transportation infrastructure, allowing nanotech to bind to damaged roads, bridges and railways to correct structural issues and material deficits.
Synthesis of enzymes is also in the works, as is synthetic ethanol. A finite resource naturally derived from fossils, ethanol has various uses, from fuel to household cleaning products to acting as a binding agent for personal care products.
Robust rechargeable industrial battery systems are another avenue of exploration for which nanotech actively seeks real-world testing. Imagine the generation of an infinite amount of electricity. This may soon be possible through nanobots deployed as self-adaptive sensors, working in tandem with nanomaterials fabricated into self-servicing generators capable of powering cities with environment-friendly energy.
Another investigational innovation is replacing computer microchips with nanochips capable of fitting your computer and phone's entire memory on infinitesimal storage units. Since nanotransistors already exist and have been commercially operating since 2014, we may not be so far off from this development.
Gene-sequencing and genetic engineering are incorporating nanotech in illness eradication and the study of tissue-and-organ regeneration. While this is one of the farthest from practical implementations of nanotech's practical applications, it poses significant promise. We've poised to eventually engineer sequencing at the gene level to help eliminate hereditary illnesses and replace the sequences with positive characteristics and traits.
While it can be argued that the future of nanotech is happening now, we have barely scratched the surface. For example, the meeting of nanotechnology with self-realizing AI has long been theorized for its potential benefits in predicting, resolving and managing environmental crises and space exploration through analyzing universal patterns and behaviors. Though still far away, the applications to make climate concerns a thing of the past or develop new climate systems on otherwise inhabitable planets are pretty plausible.
Projected to reach $33.63 billion by 2030, from its current $1.76 billion market size value, nanotech is well on its way to trending as one of the current fastest-growing sciences, not just due to its percentage increase, but in its continued collaboration with industries across the board, and sharing budget of their market share. Future applications are genuinely limitless through nanotechnology, and living during this age of exploration is exciting.
