Andromeda Metals files patent for conversion of halloysite-kaolin into nanomaterials – Proactive Investors Australia
Posted: July 7, 2021 at 3:07 pm
The patent covers the conversion process for halloysite and halloysite-kaolin into advanced, functionalised carbon nanomaterials.
() is a step closer to producing halloysite-kaolin nanomaterials on a commercial scale, following a patent filed by Natural Nanotech, its research and development entity.
Natural Nanotech, a joint venture half-owned by Andromeda and () respectively, filed a patent covering the conversion process for halloysite and halloysite-kaolin into advanced, functionalised carbon nanomaterials.
Halloysite is a naturally occurring clay material containing oxygen, silicon and aluminium, and can occur mixed with kaolinite, a similar material.
Natural Nanotech recently made a technological breakthrough by producing halloysite-based nanocarbon materials from Andromedas Great White Project halloysite-kaolin.
Andromeda managing director James Marsh said the patent application was an important step towards its vision of becoming the worlds leading supplier of high-grade halloysite-kaolin.
The research with the University of Newcastles Global Innovative Centre for Advanced Nanomaterials (GICAN) and the resultant patent filing addresses the need for improved methods for the fabrication of nanoporous carbon materials having high specific surface area, large pore volume and improved surface functionalities, he said.
Most importantly, it delivers these major advances utilising a low-cost and naturally available, benign clay material precursor, while protecting the potentially very valuable intellectual property for the benefit of all ADN and MEP shareholders.
Applications for nanomaterials based on Andromeda halloysite-kaolin include carbon capture and conversion, energy storage, hydrogen storage and transport and water purification.
Natural Nanotech was formed to investigate advanced nanotechnology applications utilising halloysite and halloysite-kaolin-sourced nanomaterials; it has been working with GICAN for several years on high-tech applications for halloysite, which are natural clay nanotubes, sourced from the Great White Kaolin Joint Ventures high-grade halloysite-kaolin deposits in South Australia.
Andromeda and Minotaur are putting $1 million a year into Natural Nanotech to facilitate the commercialisation of exciting new, potentially high-value technologies based on halloysite-kaolin from the Great White Project.
Excellent results are being obtained from the existing resource at the project by using refined material, purified to improve performance, with work to incorporate recently identified zones of much higher natural purity proceeding in parallel.
A large-scale industrial kaolin processing centrifuge was recently obtained from Europe and is being installed at the Streaky Bay pilot plant; once commissioned it will be used to produce large quantities of high-purity halloysite from specially selected feedstock.
The patent application covers the processing pathways for conversion of the natural clay nanotube halloysite and halloysite-kaolinite admixtures of varying proportions, into selectively functionalised and chemically activated carbon nanomaterials.
Selective functionalisation refers to intended high technology uses for the nanomaterials, with positive signs seen so far for selective CO2 adsorption and for specific capacitance and energy storage.
Ongoing optimisation of the process continues for hydrogen storage, water and wastewater treatment and agricultural applications.
Great White Project halloysite-derived nanomaterials have enormous surface area per unit weight, a porous nature and differential charge capabilities between inner and outer surfaces.
The patent filing documents how run-of-mine halloysite-kaolin nanoclays comprised of a mixture of flaky and tubular morphology can be converted into carbon nanomaterials through a solid-state templating, doping and activation process to fabricate activated porous nanocarbon materials for the specific applications.
Minotaur director of research and development Dr Tony Belperio explained the next steps.
A carbon capture pilot plant now under construction will rigorously assess the efficacy of the carbon nanomaterials for commercial-scale application in carbon capture and utilisation, he said.

Five key tech sectors will enjoy a combined growth of more than 400% over the next five years, according to – SymbianOne
Posted: at 3:07 pm
Five key tech sectors will enjoy a combined growth of more than 400% over the next five years, according to market reports.
These innovation pacesetters nanotechnology, AI, Digital Twins, genomics and other biotech life sciences attracted a combined $892.63 billion of investment in 2020, set to rocket to $2.44 trillion by 2025.
Paul Stannard, Chairman of the Vector Innovation Fund (VIF) an international alternative investment vehicle for advancing enabling technologies globally said:
These top five tech growth sectors are the ones currently lighting up investment opportunities, and we have specifically aligned our investment pipeline to them. They hold the key to solving major global challenges relating to sustainability, healthcare, energy, food resources and equal and fair distribution of innovation worldwide.
Most tech sectors are growing, but these game-changers attracting that $2+ trillion investment wont be companies enhancing things that already exist, like simply making your TV screen sharper.
We are backing tech companies that transform how we deal with healthcare and future pandemics, sustainable clean energy, food production and combine these opportunities with AI and machine learning.
Our funds first key target is health tech, which has enjoyed record levels of investment in the wake of COVID, so we would focus on potential nanomedicine breakthroughs such as reversing degenerative diseases and cancers or creating a multi-vaccine to protect us from a range of diseases.
And while funds like ours can supply management expertise, our target companies are also those showing the skill to commercialise and monetise their offering to a willing market.
What we have seen with the pandemic as well as Climate Change is a global realisation that we must also accelerate investment in enabling technologies supporting environmental, social & corporate governance (ESG) and the UNs Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) principles where impact can deliver better outcomes for everyone.
The Top Five tech growth sectors highlighted by market reports are:
AI is transforming future healthcare, food, energy, transport, construction, aviation, and many other sectors. Combining AI with nanotechnologies, for instance, allows platform technologies to re-invent the industries over this decade.
According to data gathered by StockApps.com, in the last quarter of 2020, there was a massive surge in investment in AI technology companies totalling $73.4 billion, which was a $15 billion increase on the start of 2020. In the first half of 2021, we have seen 4,080 investment deals in AI technology companies, according to the investment monitoring platform Pitchbook. The average investment deal flow value has increased nearly three-fold in 2020.
According to the investment monitoring platform, Pitchbook, in 2020, $5.56 billion was invested in nanotechnology companies. In the first half of 2021, there has already been $7.72 billion of investment in nanotechnology companies, from 775 deals, with the average deal size value increasing three-fold in just the last six months.
Paul Sheedy, a co-founder of the World Nano Foundation (WNF), said: The COVID pandemic is fuelling an investment trend behind the nanoscale tech that is already being billed as the COVID Decade and driven by the fear of human and economic devastation from another pandemic.
And that risk is high: there are only ten clinically approved solutions to over 220 viruses known to affect humans, and we can expect at least two new viruses to spill from their natural hosts into humans annually, but nanotech and biotech can help counter this threat.
According to Nature magazine, global biotech funding in 2020 had its best year ever: 73 life science firms alone raised a collective $22 billion. Private fund-raising also mushroomed by 37% on the previous year already a stellar year. This is being further fuelled with the COVID-19 mitigation market and the advent of a surge of investment in pandemic protection and preparedness using multi vaccines, autoimmune treatments and early intervention testing. Pitchbook has recorded 3,800 deals in biotechnology companies in the first half of 2021, totalling $34.48 billion in investment in these companies. Again, the average investment level is nearly three times what it was the previous year, and post valuations of invested biotech companies have doubled from 2020.
According to Pitchbook, last year, there was $103.8 million of capital invested from just 53 investors into the Digital Twins technology start-ups. One company, Cityzenith, has added over 5000 new investors in the last 18 months, raising $10 million to date.
Cityzenith uses its Digital TwinSmartWorldProOS software platform to enable architects, planners, and energy providers to track, manage, and reduce emissions and energy waste from individual buildings, infrastructure, and even whole cities and has just reported major contract wins and seen its share price rocket 161% in early 2021. The company is partway through a $15 million Regulation A+ investment raise to scale up its international commercial opportunities.
The Digital Twin sector is an interesting space with tremendous growth opportunities for nimble, fast-moving start-ups who have the opportunity to compete with major conglomerates in this dynamic field such as Microsoft, Siemens, Phillips and Bentley.
According to Pitchbook, investment capital in genomics companies has more than doubled in value per deal in 2021 over the previous year. So far in 2021, post-investment valuations have also more than doubled against the whole of 2020.
Paul Stannard added: The accelerated innovation since the COVID-19 pandemic is astonishing some experts say we witnessed ten years growth in the last 18 months of the outbreak giving us a glimpse of even greater possibilities, especially when some of these pacesetters, such as nanotech, genomics and Digital Twins are able to advance, accelerate and complement each other.
If it is backed by astute and enlightened investment, our future is looking bright!

Potential of Nanotech Adoption in the EV Industry – Express Computer
Posted: June 9, 2021 at 3:06 am
By Dr Inderpreet Kaur, IEEE Senior Member
Though the concept of electric vehicles (EV) has been around for a long time, it has drawn a considerable amount of interest in the past decade especially amid a rising carbon footprint and other environmental impacts of fuel-based vehicles. Battery Management Systems (BMS) still face many challenges like fires or explosions, which at times can overshadow the advantages of EVs, however EVs are still more efficient than an internal combustion engine as they have fewer moving parts that need maintenance. It also has much less operative noise, as there are not clutch, gears, exhaust pipes, or spark plugs on the vehicle. As the name suggests, EVs include two categories: All Electric Vehicles (AEVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs). While AEVs have one or more electric motors, their batteries get charged by plugging into the grid. Whereas, PHEVs have an electric grid to charge and fuel to power the internal combustion engine.
Electric Vehicle Technology
Due to both the presence of electric motors and the absence of spark plugs, gears, etc., EVs can tremendously increase the energy efficiency of the transportation industry. EVs are much more efficient at converting chemical energy into electrical energy to drive a motor than conventional internal combustion engines are at powering vehicles. Furthermore, the usage of electric vehicles is more eco-friendly due to the absence of pollution from vehicles and reduced dependency on oil that is required to ignite combustion engines.
BMS are the heart of any EV and currently, either nickel metal hydride or lithium-ion technology is used for the batteries. Lithium-ion batteries offer many advantages over nickel metal hydride but the recharging time of EVs is a challenge as it limits their use to shorter trips.
Role of Nano Technology in EV Industry
The main challenge faced by EVs are their batteries. They are very costly and have a short charging life. The battery performance of an EV could be enhanced by adopting Nanotechnology. This technology can address the gaps in e-mobility and have great benefits. On top of this, specific attributes of lithium batteries could be improved by using nanoparticles and nanocomposite materials. Battery performance parameters such as weight reduction, energy efficiency, life cycle, improved control, and communications could be increased by using Polymer nanocomposites, nano-enhanced sensors, and nanostructured metals.
Nanotechnology in Batteries
Specific performance parameters of batteries can be achieved through Nanotechnology. Conventionally, for lithium-ion batteries, negative electrode graphite powder has been used as an intercalation material. If micrometer-sized powder were replaced with carbon nanomaterials (e.g., carbon nanotubes), then the rate of insertion or removal of lithium and the battery capacity can be improved. The current density of electrodes will be increased because the diffusion path for the lithium ions is reduced, their mobility is enhanced, and electrical conductivity is increased. This makes the electrochemical reaction occur more efficiently and ultimately the use of nanomaterials will increase the efficiency of the battery.
The carbon nanotubes can bind to much higher concentrations of lithium because they have a high surface area. Another alternative for negative electrode materials will be Nanowires made of titanium dioxide (TiO2), vanadium oxide (V2O5) or tin oxide (SnO). Though the commercial manufacturing of these materials is still in its early stages, to date, most of the commercially available oxide materials are Li (NiCoAl)O2, Li (NiMnCo)O2, LiMn2O4, Li (AlMn)2O4, or LiCo2O4. But all these materials are neither cost-effective nor safe. The nanostructuring of these materials has been shown to significantly improve their intercalation capacity. Research is still being done to find optimum compositions to attain better performance of batteries that will be economical, light, and compact.
Therefore, the objectives of future EV research will be focused on improved charging periods of batteries, nanomaterials to improve the efficiency of batteries by bringing down the cost of nanomaterials for batteries as well as the size and weight of battery pack, and commercial development of these nanomaterials. This also will automatically improve the battery management and thermal management systems of the battery pack of an EV.

New Treatment for Lung Infections in Cystic Fibrosis Up to 100,000-Fold More Effective – Contagionlive.com
Posted: at 3:06 am
A novel biometric nanostructured material used to treat lung infections in cases of severe cystic fibrosis increased its efficacy by up to 100,000-fold over the current treatment, according to papers published in both Small and ACS Infectious Diseases.
In the Small paper, investigators from the University of South Australia described how they used an advanced, biologically-relevant co-culture model of human cystic fibrosis bronchial epithelial cells that were infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), which is a cause of persistent and chronic lung infections in patients with cystic fibrosis. The treatment used to treat P. aeruginosa is the antibiotic Tobramycin, however its efficacy is severely limited due to permeability problems. The novel nanotech approach was designed to enhance efficacy in treatment for P. aeruginosa due to increased permeability.
In testing with the bronchial epithelial cells, the nanotech eradicated P. aeruginosa after 2 doses, the investigators reported, which was a 100-fold improvement over the Tobramycin. When Tobramycin is paired with an antibiotic that permeates biofilms such as ciprofloxacin, the nanotech still performed.
The study authors indicated that the nanotech had enhanced penetration of Tobramycin across the biofilm barrier, but not through healthy lung cells, which allows for increased concentration of the antibiotic at the site of infection. Therefore, this strategy would enable the administration of lower doses and a reduced toxicity, they wrote.
Tobramycin is commonly used to treat these infections but increasingly antibiotics are failing to make any significant difference to lung infections, leaving sufferers requiring life-long antibiotic therapy administered every month, study authors Clive Prestidge, Nicky Thomas, and PhD candidate Chelsea Thorn, said. Our research successfully treats advanced human cell culture lung infections using nano-enhanced Tobramycin and shows how it can eradicate serious and persistent infections after only two doses. This could be a real game-changer for people living with CF.
In the ACS Infectious Diseases paper, the study authors detailed their comparison of liposomes and the nanotech technology. In this case, the nanotech was loaded with Ps1G, the glycoside hydrolase, and Tobramycin to test if the combination would protect Ps1G from proteolysis, trigger the enzymes release in the presence of bacteria, and/or improve the total antimicrobial effect.
The study authors found that the nanotech approach was deemed to be an effective strategy that better protected against proteolysis, produced a sustained release of Ps1G, and improved the antimicrobial effect by 10-100-fold. Additionally, the study authors observed an increased survival of in vitro and in vivo Caenorhabditis elegans infected with P. aeruginosa.
When comparing digestible to non-digestible nanotech, the study authors determined that the digestible type triggered the enzymes release in the presence of bacteria. However, there were negligible differences in the versions ability to protect Ps1G from proteolysis and potentiate the antimicrobial activity when combined with Tobramycin.
They called the nanotech a promising protective delivery system for novel biofilm dispensing enzymes combined with antibiotics, in addition to infection-directed therapy and improved performance.
Our technology improves the performance of Tobramycin without increasing the toxicity of the drug, so what were doing is a far more effective and efficient treatment for chronic lung infections, the study authors added in the statement.

‘Whitest White’ Paint Beats the Heat – Scientific American
Posted: May 22, 2021 at 10:14 am
The blackest black paint has absorbed 99.9 percent of public attention for far too long. Now the time has come to shed some light on the other end of the practical paint spectrum: a new colorant described as the whitest white. Like its dark counterpart, famously used for things such as thermal camouflage, the new paint has important potential applications. Surfaces coated with it reflect 98.1 percent of sunlight, creating a powerful cooling effectwithout any of the electricity required by commercial air conditioners.
The 98.1 percent means that now we only absorb 1.9 percent of sunlight, compared to 10 to 20 percent absorption from [white or heat reflective] commercial paints. Thats a significant reduction, says Xiulin Ruan, a mechanical engineer at Purdue University and a co-author of a new study describing the paint published in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces. By reflecting so much sunlight, the novel mixture can actually release heat from a coated building. Ruan and his colleagues at Purdue calculate that covering a 1,000-square-foot (more than 90-square-meter) roof with their paint could cool a building by about 10 kilowatts. This effect might not eliminate the need for energy-hungry air conditioners, but it could reduce their use. Our model shows if youre in, say, Reno, Nev., or Phoenix, Ariz., you can save up to 70 to 80 percent on air conditioning in the summer, Ruan says.
Scientists have been developing reflective paints for decades, but todays commercial products still remain at or above the surrounding temperature. In the past 10 years, however, researchers have found greater success with multilayered coatings that incorporate tiny particlessome on the nanoscalewhich reflect many wavelengths of light. Teams atStanford University and the University of Colorado Boulder have shown that such materials can cool a surface to below the ambient temperature. Unfortunately, manufacturing such coatings and applying them to a surface may cost moreand requires a more intensive processthan simply slapping on some paint.
In 2014 Ruan decided to take a hybrid approach and create a paint that could easily be brushed or sprayed onto a surfacebut would still incorporate a reflective nanomaterial. His team tested substances such as titanium dioxide and calcium carbonate and made a cooling but less reflective paint out of the latter last year. The researchers ultimately selected a relatively inexpensive compound called barium sulfate. Next, they calibrated the necessary concentration of this white material to make the paint as reflective as possible without degrading its ability to stick together. Finally, the team made sure the barium sulfate particles came in a variety of sizes because each size scatters a different wavelength of light.
I like this study. I think its promising, says Yuan Yang, a materials scientist at Columbia University, who was not involved in the research. And I think theres a potential to be commercialized. Ruan says he hopes to bring a version of his paint to market in a year or two. The price is comparable to, or even slightly lower than, titanium dioxide that is used in commercial paints, he notes. Manufacturing doesnt involve any expensive nanotechnology. Although its still a nanotech, it is a very affordable nanotech.
But there is plenty of competition from other researchers. And Yang points out that any reflective product will need to stand up to the real world, where grime coats surfaces over time. A manufacturer will have to grapple with how to make sure that the paint stays white after 30 years of use, he says.
Ruan sees his work as a tool to fight the climate emergency. President [Joe] Biden talked about cutting carbon emissions in half by the end of 2030, he says. Our paint can contribute to that goal because it lets us get cooling without using power.

Superbug infections in poultry under the microscope – Poultry World
Posted: at 6:15 am
Researchers report promising results in the fight against superbug infections on poultry farms, which could have wider implication for human health.
Scientists from Aga Nanotech and CIEL (Centre for Innovation Excellence in Livestock), supported by Scotlands Rural College (SRUC), have been looking at sustainable solutions to replace the use of antibiotics in animal husbandry.

The study, funded by the UKs Department of Health and Social Cares Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) fund, tested a novel technology which offers a safe, effective, and sustainable replacement for antibiotic use in poultry rearing. It is part of a wider project involving UK-based GAMA Healthcare and the Shanghai Veterinary Research Institute to customise and trial innovative patented technology for use in poultry.
Dr Salvatore Galgano, lead scientist at SRUC, who was awarded the Presidents prize for the best oral presentation after sharing the findings of the study at the World Poultry Science Associations UK branch meeting, said: The study demonstrated that this novel technology has the potential to be a substitute for antibiotics and could also enhance production.
It is an important step in the fight against superbug infections in animals and lays the foundations for further investigation into the role of this new technology in decreasing antibiotic resistance associated with animal husbandry.
Adrian Fellows, CEO of Aga Nanotech, added: We are excited by the early results which show real promise for the development of a new generation of feed additives with a remarkable range of benefits.
There is still work to do and in part this will be conducted in cooperation with our project partners in China. However, this research has demonstrated a potential route to the safe, nutritionally beneficial, and environmentally responsible replacement of antibiotics in chicken rearing and possibly other monogastric animals.
Nikki Dalby, lead project manager at CIEL, added that the innovative approach offered clear veterinary and human health benefits. Further gains included improved food security, food integrity, and supply chain resilience.
Over and above the potential it offers the poultry sector in China, this alternative technology could be extended to other livestock species and rolled out worldwide.
