Liberty Mutual Insurance Webinar Highlights Predictive Modeling’s Key Role in Better Managing Total Workers …

Posted: February 7, 2012 at 4:08 pm

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Now even more commercial insurance brokers, agents and buyers can better understand the pivotal role predictive modeling plays in effectively managing the total cost of workers compensation claims through the re-release of a webinar from Liberty Mutual Insurance. As a result of high demand and interest, this webinar is now available via Liberty Mutual Insurance’s website to those who were not able to view the event when it was hosted live in December.

The InnovationNow: Experience the Future of Predictive Modeling webinar walks viewers through Liberty Mutual Insurance’s next generation predictive model, which quickly identifies potential outlier claims – those whose costs are likely to escalate beyond the normal range – enabling claim managers to bring the resources needed to effectively manage each claim.

The success of Liberty Mutual Insurance’s next generation predictive model at better managing policyholders’ total workers compensation costs stems from the accuracy of the model and its integration into Liberty Mutual Insurance’s VantageComp™ claims management process.

“Almost 50 percent of most workers compensation policyholders’ claims drive 90 percent of total claim costs,” explains George Neale, executive vice president and general manager for claims, Liberty Mutual Insurance’s Commercial Markets strategic business unit. “While some of these are obvious from the start, such as a construction worker falling at a jobsite and becoming a paraplegic, most outlier claims emerge over time. Identifying these early and getting them the proper resources quickly, delivers the best possible outcomes for injured workers and their employers.”

The ability of Liberty Mutual Insurance’s next generation predictive model to accurately predict outlier claims as early as claim intake stems from the model’s sophisticated multivariate analysis and vast workers compensation database – the largest in the industry.

“To enhance our predictive model – initially developed in 2004, one of the first built by a workers compensation insurer – we sorted through our workers compensation and medical billing data to find those variables that best predict outlier claims, and to understand the interplay between them,” notes Paul Ivanovskis, the Liberty Mutual Insurance senior managing actuary who helped develop the model. “We evaluated more than 825,000 lost time claims and 140 million individual medical billing transactions. To validate the accuracy of the updated model, we ran an additional 200,000 lost time claims – which were not included in the evaluation phase – through it. The model accurately predicted the outlier claims that developed in that ‘holdback’ data.”

However, an accurate model is only part of the total solution.

“To have a meaningful impact on policyholders’ claim costs, a predictive model must be institutionalized within the claims management process,” explains Maureen McCarthy, senior vice president, workers compensation and managed care, Commercial Markets, Liberty Mutual Insurance. “Every one of our claim professionals has been thoroughly trained on our next generation predictive model and the alerts it generates highlighting potential outlier claims and suggesting management strategies.”

31-12-2010 18:22 The shocking truth about the erosion of our fundamental civil liberties by Tony Blair's government will be exposed this summer in TAKING LIBERTIES, released on DVD in the UK cinemas by Revolver Entertainment October 15th 2007. Right to Protest, Right to Freedom of Speech. Right to Privacy. Right not to be detained without charge, Innocent Until Proven Guilty. Prohibition from Torture. TAKING LIBERTIES will reveal how these six central pillars of liberty have been systematically destroyed by New Labour, and the freedoms of the British people stolen from under their noses amidst a climate of fear created by the media and government itself. TAKING LIBERTIES uncovers the stories the government don't want you to hear -- so ridiculous you will laugh, so ultimately terrifying you will want to take action. Teenage sisters detained for 36 hours for a peaceful protest; an RAF war veteran arrested for wearing an anti-Bush and Blair T-shirt; an innocent man shot in a police raid; and a man held under house arrest for two years, after being found innocent in court. Ordinary law-abiding citizens being punished for exercising their 'rights' -- rights that have been fought for over centuries, and which seem to have been extinguished in a decade. -- http://www.noliberties.com Educate Yourself Freely @ http astrotheology.webs.com http cropcirclestruth.webs.com http vortexmath.webs.com http thegreatwork.webs.com http thepyramidcode.webs.com http The media material presented in this production is ...

Derick Brassard had Rick Nash to his right and a career night in front of him. With one rip of the stick, he delivered a much-needed win for the much-maligned Blue Jackets, and he set a pair of personal marks in the process.

After stealing the puck from Anaheim's Cam Fowler in the Blue Jackets' zone, Brassard carried the puck the length of the ice and blasted a slap shot from high in the left faceoff circle to finish a 2-on-1. The puck beat Ducks goaltender Jonas Hiller inside the near post and gave the Blue Jackets a 3-2 overtime win before 13,358 in Honda Center.

It was the first two-goal game of Brassard's 245-game NHL career, and also his first overtime game-winner. The club's six-game losing streak (0-5-1) ended with a celebration, as the Blue Jackets' bench emptied to swarm Brassard along the wall.

"On the two-on-one I had Nash, which is a really good option there," Brassard said. "But I trust my shot. I knew I could do it. I just find a way there.

"We had a tough break there in the last game (Wednesday in Los Angeles). But we came out strong. That just shows the character of our team."

Jeff Carter, who returned from a 10-game absence with a shoulder injury, also scored for the Blue Jackets, his 11th of the season.

Curtis Sanford had 33 saves to improve to 9-12-4. He allowed a goal on the Ducks second shot of the game, only 1:46 into the first period. After that, he was in command.

"We battled tonight. We scratched and clawed," Blue Jackets interim coach Todd Richards said. "We made it harder on ourselves than I think it needed to be at times."

Richards, with the second part of that quote, was referring to the second period, which was the turning point of the game.

The Blue Jackets took five straight minor penalties: Derek Dorsett (unsportsmanlike conduct, 2:29), Vinny Prospal (hooking, 5:21), Colton Gillies (tripping, 7:42), too many men (16:03) and Fedor Tyutin (delay of game, 18:26).

Somehow, with the NHL's worst penalty kill -- both overall and on the road -- the Blue Jackets killed off four of the five penalties, keeping the game within a goal.

Brassard made it 1-1 at 14:47, snapping a six-game streak without a goal. The puck was sent on goal by Blue Jackets rookie John Moore, and Rick Nash was there to battle for the rebound. His off-balance sweep across the slot found Brassard, who only needed to finish.

The Ducks did cash in on one of the power plays. Teemu Selanne, who had both of Anaheim's goals, tied into a one-timer from the left circle. It was vintage Selanne. He found space, waited for teammate Corey Perry to feed him the puck, and simply blistered it inside the near post.

"I don't think we played that well," Selanne said. "That is what bothers me most. Especially on the power play in the second period, we could have had the game right there."

The Blue Jackets scored the equalizer early in the third with their own power play goal.

Antoine Vermette threw a blind, back-hand pass into the slot, a move he has tried numerous times this season with mixed results. This time, though, it worked. Perfectly. Carter skated into his pass and scored off his backhand before Hiller could scramble back into position.

Welcome back, Carter.

Both teams have beauty chances in overtime. At 1:51, Vermette was set up wonderfully by R.J. Umberger, but got stoned by Hiller. At 2:33, Anaheim's Cam Fowler unleased a show from the left circle that Sanford snared with his glove, a nifty flash of leather.

Fowler was back on the ice a shift later, and Brassard forced him into a turnover near the half-way in the Blue Jackets zone, then raced down the ice while Fowler gave chase.

Before Ducks defenseman Francois Beauchemin could drag out the play -- a good defenseman knows you always take away the pass on a 2-on-1 -- Brassard reached back and blistered a shot past Hiller.

"After the way the last game ended and the way we played here last time (a 7-4 loss on Jan. 8), it's obviously nice to come and prove to ourselves that we can win in this building," Sanford said. "We played a strong game against a pretty offensively-potent team."

Side dishes:

-- In case you missed the earlier blog entry, goaltender Mark Dekanich has surgery earlier this week and is out of the rest of season.

-- D Brett Lebda left the game after the first period and did not return. He has a hand injury. More will be known after the club flies back to Columbus on Saturday.

-- The Blue Jackets improved to 10-9-2 all-time in Anaheim, the most wins in any building outside the Central Division. Only once in 11 seasons have they gone an entire season without getting at least a point in Anaheim.

-- Rick Nash leads the Blue Jackets with six OT goals.

-- Teemu Selanne has scored 655 games. Ponder that.

-- Double double, animal style.

Liberty girls top Lee’s Summit on last-second shot

Blue Jays blow huge lead but still top Lee’s Summit with last-second layup. By RUSTIN DODD The Kansas City Star

By RUSTIN DODD The Kansas City Star

Updated: 2012-02-03T05:28:23Z

A near collapse. A controversial ejection. And a last-second layup.

It’s safe to say that’s not how Liberty girls coach Mike Morley drew it up. But in the end, it all worked out. Junior guard Shelby Murtha banked in a game-winning layup on an inbounds play with 0.4 seconds left as Liberty edged Lee’s Summit 39-37 on Thursday night at Liberty. “Our JV team runs it a lot,” Morley said of the curl screen that sprung Murtha. “And that’s the first time we’ve executed it well in a game.” The play came just moments after Liberty sophomore guard Taylor Wetzel knocked down a three from the wing that tied the game at 37-37. The late heroics nearly overshadowed a game that featured two overwhelming momentum swings and a rugged altercation in the second quarter. Well, almost. After Liberty blew open the doors with a 21-3 run to start the game, Lee’s Summit settled in and cut the lead to 23-12 in the final minute of the first half. And this is where things got a little physical. Liberty senior guard Delaney Kiely and Lee’s Summit freshman Micah Wilson were involved in a push-and-shove altercation under the Lee’s Summit basket. An official whistled to stop play, and a few minutes of confusion ensued as the officials sorted things out. The final explanation to Morley and Lee’s Summit coach Brian Bubalo: Wilson had initiated contact with Kiely, who then pushed back before throwing a punch. Wilson and Kiely were both issued technicals, and Kiely was tagged with a flagrant foul that carried an automatic ejection. “That’s how he said he saw it,” Morley said of the official’s account. “I saw our girl throw a punch. … And I also saw their girl throw an elbow to the face.”In any event, the call meant that Liberty, 10-10, would play the second half without Kiely, the team’s leading scorer and an athlete who signed a soccer scholarship with Oklahoma State earlier this week. Lee’s Summit, 8-11, took immediate advantage. Seniors Breana Washington (10 points) and Ali Patterson (16 points) went to work on offense as the Tigers pulled ahead 31-29 in the fourth quarter. Moments later, Patterson added a layup that stretched the lead to 36-31, and Liberty looked out of gas. “You don’t have many games like that,” said Bubalo, who will retire after the season following 11 seasons as the girls coach at Lee’s Summit. But the tide shifted after Liberty sophomore Abbie Gentrup converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 1:15 left. Wetzel followed with her three-pointer and a crucial steal. And the Blue Jays found themselves taking the ball out of bounds with 0.4 seconds left. Just enough time. “To get a win like that is huge, just so we can get them some confidence,” Morley said.

Liberty’s Melton signs with Texas State

Posted: at 3:04 am

Liberty High School senior Ryan Melton took advantage of National Signing Day, Wednesday, Feb. 1, to add his name to the Texas State Bobcats roster. Melton’s signing covers his entire costs for college.

“It’s a full ride,” emphasized Coach Shane Deel to the room full of Panther players and supporters.

Melton played Tight End, Tackle and Defensive End for the Liberty Panthers but will focus on the Offensive Tackle position for Texas State.

Ryan weighs 265 pounds and stands 6’ 5” tall, which drew him much attention as a potential D1 prospect. His parents are Trudi and Kenny and he has two sisters Audrey and Abbi and one brother Luke.

In 2012, Texas State will join the WAC (Western Athletic Conference) along with Hawaii, Fresno State, Idaho, Louisiana Tech, Nevada, New Mexico State, San Jose State and Utah State.

In San Marcos, Ryan will reunite with 2011 LHS graduate Josh Sell and 2010 LHS graduate Jeremy Dickey in preparation for the upcoming season. Sell went Eastern New Mexico University to play football but has transferred to Texas State and will join his former teammate as a “preferred walk on.”

Dickey transferred from Tarleton State and plays the Safety position Melton had fielded offers from Lamar, Colorado, UTEP, Tulane, UTSA and others but ultimately decided on Texas State because he liked the city and the environment of the school.

“Coach Fran was one of my favorite coaches when I was younger,” Melton added. “I just want to thank all of my coaches from Liberty for helping me get this far.”

Melton will join the squad in July.

Liberty County Sheriff’s deputies arrested two parolees apparently living in the vacated house of a U.S. soldier who recently returned to Fort Hood from active duty. The couple had been trying to sell the veteran’s belongings in a yard sale, according to the Montgomery County Police Reporter:

(Deputies) received a call from Holly Burbank who is currently at Ft. Hood with her husband Sam who just returned from Iraq and their two daughters ages 6 and 3. … She told the sheriff’s office that earlier today she received a call from a family member stating that a male and female were living in that home and selling her property in a yard sale. The family member had confronted the occupants and a verbal altercation took place causing her to leave and call Ms. Burbank.

The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office responded with several units. Once at the scene they arrested Faylisa Danielle Bailey, 30 and Johnny Wayne Bell, 47. Both are on parole, the only identification Bailey had was a Texas Department of Criminal Justice photo ID.

U.S. regulators upgrade Jeep Liberty airbag probe

Posted: January 30, 2012 at 5:49 pm

(Reuters) - U.S. safety regulators have upgraded an
investigation into almost 387,000 Jeep
Liberty sport utility vehicles for potential inadvertent
airbag
deployment, increasing the possibility of a recall.

The National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration said it was
upgrading its investigation of the 386,873 Chrysler SUVs from
model years 2002 and 2003 to an engineering analysis, a step in
a process that could lead to a recall if regulators determine
that a manufacturer needs to address a safety issue.

In two separate other NHTSA filings, Mazda Motor Corp Motor
Corp is recalling more than 52,000 older Tribute SUVs for
potential brake fluid leaks, and Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz has
begun investigating consumer complaints of fuel odor that may
be a leak in about 8,000 older E55 AMG sedans and wagons.

For the Chrysler issue, NHTSA said it had identified 87 reports
of inadvertent driver or passenger front airbag deployment,
resulting in 50 alleged injuries, including burns, cuts and
bruises to the upper body, according to documents filed online.

Forty-two of the 87 incidents involved the driver front airbag
deploying without a crash, occurring at vehicle startup and
while driving on the road, according to NHTSA. The remaining 45
involved both the driver and passenger front airbags, NHTSA
said.

Some drivers noted that the airbag warning light had
illuminated just prior to airbag deployment, while others did
not observe one, NHTSA said.

An inspection conducted by Chrysler indicates an internal
electronic chip that controls airbag deployment failed,
possibly due to a voltage spike. The automaker, which is
controlled by Fiat, is in the process of identifying possible
root causes, NHTSA said.

NHTSA initially opened a probe into the Jeep SUVs in September
after receiving seven consumer complaints.

A Chrysler spokesman said the U.S. automaker was cooperating
with the investigation.

In separate documents, NHTSA said Mazda is recalling more than
52,000 Tribute SUVs for potential brake fluid leak that could lead to a
fire.

Mazda is notifying owners this week of 52,390 Tributes from
model years 2001 and 2002 about the potential brake fluid leaks
that could come into contact with the anti-lock brake system
module wiring harness, according to documents NHTSA.

A Mazda spokesman said no injuries or accidents have been
reported related to this issue.

In the case of a leak, corrosion could develop and lead to
melting, smoking or fire, according NHTSA.

The affected vehicles were built at Ford Motor Co Kansas City
Assembly Plant in Missouri, according to NHTSA. Until the
repairs are made, owners are being told to park their vehicles
outside, according to NHTSA.

The Mercedes-Benz issue covers about 8,100 E55 AMG sedans and
wagons in model years 2003-2006.

NHTSA documents show that 20 consumers have complained about
the odor of gasoline inside or outside of the car. Several of
them suggested the issue may be related to a 2008 recall that
involved possible cracking of a fuel filter module in vehicles
exposed to high ambient temperatures.

Government steps up Jeep Liberty air bag probe

Posted: at 5:49 pm

DETROIT (AP) — Federal safety regulators have stepped
up their investigation into the Jeep Liberty SUV after
50 people reported they were hurt when the air bags inflated even
though the vehicle wasn't involved in a crash.

The National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration started
investigating Liberty SUVs made by Chrysler Group LLC
from the 2002 and 2003 model years in September. The
investigation was upgraded to a full engineering analysis last
week.

Documents on the agency website say Chrysler and regulators
have gotten 87 complaints of air bags going off by surprise.
Nearly 387,000 vehicles are under investigation.

Drivers reported burns, cuts and bruises. No deaths have
occurred.

Forty-two of the incidents involved the driver's front air bag,
with the remaining 45 cases involving both the driver and front
passenger air bags, the documents said. The incidents occurred
as the vehicle was being started and while it was being driven.
The agency said some of the Liberty owners reported that the
air bag warning light illuminated just before the air bags were
inflated. But others reported that they didn't see any warning
light.

NHTSA said in the documents that Chrysler inspected the air bag
control computer chip and found that it fails due to a possible
electrical voltage spike.

The company says no incidents have happened in vehicles made
after March 19, 2003. But regulators say Chrysler can't explain
that, so they are starting an engineering analysis.

Messages were left Monday seeking comment from a Chrysler
spokesman.
