Liberty Academy faces financial troubles

Posted: March 9, 2012 at 8:48 pm

Tuition is likely to increase for students at Liberty Baptist Academy, but the school does not plan to close down, according to school officials.

Scott Hendry, the financial agent for Liberty, hosted a meeting Tuesday at the Liberty Baptist church to inform parents of students that the school has financial issues and that there is an investigation into the matter. George Wright, an attorney for Stuart, Clover, Duran, Thomas & Vorndran LLP, who represents Liberty Church, and also the academy, also attended the meeting.

Neither Hendry nor Wright provided specific information to the approximately 300 attendees at the meeting regarding the investigation, but admitted there is one.

Im aware that there seems to be an ongoing investigation by the district attorneys office, but I dont know any more details than that, Wright told the News-Star on Wednesday.

The school has never been a financially self-sustained institution, and the tuition and fees do not cover the costs of operations for the school, Hendry said. Liberty has always depended on the church for financial backing and has had a myriad of financial troubles for several years, Hendry said.

There are many reasons for the financial trouble. Donations to the church have decreased recently in the last two years and major supporters have recently died. The school has also had to take out two different loans in the past 18 months, Hendry said. He has worked extensively to try to establish standard financial practices within the school and church since officially taking his position in 2010.

We have been, as a church, in a difficult financial position, Hendry said. Thats why a lot of these things are coming to a head. The schools financial concerns were brought to the attention of Hendry by Gary Kasterke, a deacon and trustee at Liberty, after he wrote a letter of allegations to Hendry last summer.

The letter highlighted specific financial transactions that Kasterke was concerned about and wanted Hendry to look into, Kasterke said.

One thing led to another. There was a strong allegation letter of wrong-doing that was given to me last summer that necessitated quite an investigation and that is still ongoing, Hendry said. There are also a number of things that came up in the day-to-day business of making sure our finances are in order and accounted for that were questionable and of grave concern to me and to the people that were involved.

Wright told attendees at the meeting that the investigation into the Academy has sped up in the past couple of days and that Hendry was telling the crowd as much as he could, but could not get provide many details because the investigation is ongoing.

After opposing turning over the townships 911 operation to Trumbull Countys 911 Center, the Liberty police union has now thrown its weight behind the idea.

Police Patrolman Ray Buhala, president of the Liberty branch of the Ohio Patrolmens Benevolent Association, said because Liberty would have to increase taxes in order to keep the townships 911 center, the union now supports the move.

Buhala said the concerns with response time, which in the past was one of the factors police had against closing the local 911 dispatch center, are no longer there.

Not with todays technology, Buhala said.

Both he and Police Chief Richard Tisone said the digital mapping dispatchers use at the county 911 center are now compatible with the mapping technology in the Liberty police cruisers.

Everyone wants an in-house dispatcher, Tisone said. But wed have to raise taxes in order to do that. And thats not something were willing to do.

Liberty University breaks ground on new library

Posted: March 8, 2012 at 7:06 am

Liberty University honored its founder during a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday for the $50 million Jerry Falwell Library, set to open by fall 2013.

The undertaking is Libertys biggest project to date, and begins just two months shy of the fifth anniversary of the Rev. Jerry Falwell Sr.s death.

Dozens of university and community leaders gathered behind the Schilling Center, where construction crews have begun work on a 170,000-square-foot library that combines Jeffersonian architecture with modern design. Falwell Sr.s wife, Macel, came to support the project, along with son Jonathan Falwell, senior pastor at Thomas Road Baptist Church, and other family members.

Hundreds of students were released early from convocation in the nearby Vines Center, swelling the crowd to approximately 5,000 people.

Three university leaders took the stage to memorialize Falwell Sr. LU co-founder Elmer Townes, provost Ron Godwin and Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr.

Towns recounted the formative role books played during Falwell Sr.s college years, from The Bible to American classics.

It was those books that changed his life and became the foundation of Thomas Road Baptist Church, and ultimately became the foundation for Liberty University, Towns said.

Godwin praised the Board of Trustees for its unanimous decision to name the library after Falwell Sr., despite the founders vocal wish that no buildings bear his name. He said the library will represent the epitome of academic and technological excellence.

Liberty has outgrown its current facility in DeMoss Hall, which serves as the main academic building.

The four-story library will become a centerpiece of the campus, incorporating state-of-the art technology with student-friendly study spaces. It will house a memorial to Falwell Sr. and historical artifacts, including a recently acquired Dead Sea Scroll facsimile parchment currently on display at the Vatican in Rome.

New Liberty Mutual ad gives special effects a workout

Posted: March 7, 2012 at 8:07 am

By Chris Reidy, Globe Staff

A new ad from Liberty Mutual Insurance for its Home Protector Plus product makes use of so many special effects that it and a companion ad were almost a year in the making, said an executive with Hill Holliday of Boston, Liberty Mutuals long-time ad agency.

The message of the two ads is that Boston-based Liberty Mutual and Home Protector Plus, a home insurance product, works hard to get a customers life back to normal after something bad has happened.

Hill Hollidays branding campaign for Liberty Mutual features the tag-line of: Responsibility: Whats Your Policy? These two latest ads are more focused on a specific Liberty Mutual insurance product.

The new ad that has just begun airing is called Strings, and it shows a house getting convulsed by a fierce storm that badly shakes up the homes contents. The spot was filmed on one of the worlds biggest sound stages, and nearly 3,200 household items were hung individually from wires for the special effects. The spot also gave the sound stages wind machines a good workout.

A second spot called Journey started airing in early February. In this spot, a woman bikes around a suburban neighborhood and manages to avoid disaster around every corner. Two identical houses were built for the shoot, Hill Holliday said, and one challenge for the actress in the spot was to maintain a bike speed of 7 miles per hour so the script would come off as planned.

It took us almost a year to produce those spots, Hill Holliday creative director Scott Noble said.

Other Hill Holliday clients include Dunkin Donuts, Major League Baseball, Verizon Wireless, Bank of America, Chilis, and Novartis.

Liberty University decides to end contract with GLTC

Posted: at 8:07 am

Liberty University plans to discontinue its contract with the Greater Lynchburg Transit Company, opting instead to run its own fleet of buses on campus, LU officials announced Tuesday.

LU Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. said GLTCs rising transit costs prompted the change, which will go into effect in August. Falwell estimated GLTCs hourly charges have increased 80 percent since 2008, including a 12 percent spike in the last two weeks.

We just cant live with those types of unexpected increases, Falwell said.

Prior to 2007, Liberty operated its own bus service for students who needed rides across campus or to select off-campus locations.

Liberty could no longer support the demands of its growing student body so, in 2007, it partnered with GLTC in a contract that cost the university roughly $1.14 million, or $52 per hour, said Richard Martin, LUs vice president for financial research and analysis.

Next year, the projected cost for a comparable amount of service came out to nearly $2 million, or about $93 per hour, Martin said.

Its gotten more expensive very quickly and also we do have some concerns over the sustainability of the service provided by GLTC, he said, citing the companys recent budget shortfalls.

Libertys strong financial position makes it feasible to buy a fleet of buses and build the accompanying infrastructure, Martin said. Students, who pay for the transit service through their tuition dollars, will save money in the long run.

Liberty is one of GLTCs biggest sources of funding and riders. The impact of Libertys departure will play out in coming months.

GLTC general manager Michael Carroll did not return phone calls Tuesday evening.
