American Liberty Petroleum Sees Promise at Paradise Well

Posted: March 20, 2012 at 6:08 pm

American Liberty Petroleum on Tuesday provided background information on the Company's acquisition of the Paradise 2-12 well located in Gabbs Valley, Nye County, Nevada, and of American Liberty's subsequent well completion efforts.

The well is situated on the Cobble Cuesta structure, a 12 mile by 5 mile faulted anticline that appears to be positioned to receive oil migrated from deeper areas in the eastern part of Gabbs Valley.

"We are fortunate to have acquired the Paradise 2-12 well asset within such a promising region. The presence of oil that we have seen coming from the well has spurred us on to maximize on the potential value of both this asset and the sizeable anticline that lies beneath it."

The Paradise 2-12 well was initially drilled in the fall of 2010 before the Company had acquired any ownership of the asset. The well reached a total depth of 4,248 feet into the Tertiary Esmeralda Formation within the 26,000-acre Cobble Cuesta structure in the northwest part of Gabbs Valley. A report by Alfred H. Pekarek, Ph.D., Geologist, from January 2008 estimated the Cobble Cuesta structure represents reserves of 4+ billion barrels of oil based on reservoir and production data from producing Nevada oil fields.

The Paradise 2-12 well indicated live oil at several zones from mud logs. Of the two drill stem tests (DSTs) run during the drilling, DST No. 2 (3,695 feet to 3,786 feet) recovered oil and confirmed pressures and permeability. Based on these tests, the BLM determined the well was capable of commercial production, and consequently extended the lease to allow for further completion efforts.

American Liberty Petroleum, through a joint venture agreement ("the JV") with Cortez Exploration LLC and Desert Discoveries LLC, thereafter acquired all rights to the 3,840-acre Cortez lease (BLM Lease number NVN-59901) and the two wells located on it; the Company has a 60 percent Working Interest and a 48 percent Net Revenue Interest in the lease.

On August 1, 2011, Independence Drilling LLC, the designated operator for the JV, obtained all the necessary permits and commenced a completion program on the Paradise 2-12 well. The results of this work showed a fluid level test of 3,100 feet of oil and water in the well bore above the perforation zone of 3,700 feet - 3,782 feet. A completion rig was brought to the site and swabbing produced a total of 97 barrels (bbls) of fluid consisting of a paraffinic 19.5 API gravity oil and water. Based on this inflow data, American Liberty concluded the well warranted further completion and pumping operation activities in order to fully determine its potential to commercially produce oil.

"We are fortunate to have acquired the Paradise 2-12 well asset within such a promising region. The presence of oil that we have seen coming from the well has spurred us on to maximize on the potential value of both this asset and the sizeable anticline that lies beneath it," said American Liberty Petroleum's President Alvaro Vollmers.

Liberty/Clairton meets federal clean air standards for first time, officials say

Posted: at 6:08 pm

The Liberty and Clairton areas have met federal clean air standards, meaning air quality in Allegheny County is the best it has been since the industrial revolution began, officials said today.

County Executive Rich Fitzgerald said the annual air quality standard for fine particulate matter in the Liberty/Clairton area has come into compliance more than three years ahead of the required attainment date of August 2015.

"This is great progress and a significant milestone for Allegheny County's air quality," said Fitzgerald. "We must remain vigilant and continue working to improve air quality throughout the county."

Air quality improved at every monitoring site in 2011, with fine particulate levels well below the annual standard of 15 micrograms per cubic meter Liberty (14.0), Avalon (13.1), North Braddock (12.3), Harrison (11.6), Lawrenceville (11.1), Clairton (10.7), South Fayette (10.6) and North Park (9.0).

"With the Liberty/Clairton area in compliance, every air monitoring station now meets the annual clean air standard for fine particulates, and air quality in Allegheny County is the best it has been since the industrial revolution began more than 100 years ago," said Air Quality Program Manager Jim Thompson.

The air quality improvements, especially in the Liberty/Clairton area, are because of recent pollution controls that have decreased emissions from the U.S. Steel Clairton Coke Works and from other sources upwind, particularly out-of-state power plants.

Liberty women seeking upset of top-seeded Irish today

Posted: March 18, 2012 at 4:34 pm

Libertys womens basketball players are well aware that history is stacked against them. The Flames, who are the No. 16 seed in the Raleigh Region of the NCAA Tournament, travel to top-seeded Notre Dame for a first-round game today. The only time the severe underdog has come out on top was in 1998, when Harvard stunned an injury-depleted Stanford team on the Cardinals home floor.

Notre Dame (30-3) has the resume (two wins over Connecticut) and the star power (point guard Skylar Diggins is a Wooden Award finalist). Liberty center Avery Warley said the key to the Flames staying in todays game is to, in her words, "tone down the hype."

"I dont think its so much the players," Warley said. "Theres just a lot of hype with it. I think if I can get my team to realize that its just hype, and that they put on their pants just the way we put on our pants, then I think well be OK.

"Were both [Division] I. Weve both been through battles."

The Flames (24-8) havent played anyone remotely close to the Irishs stature this season. Libertys top non-conference opponent was Oklahoma, which is a No. 6 seed in the tournament. The Sooners beat Liberty by 31 points in Nashville in November.

"We need to have a calm mind and an understanding that we need to play our very best A-game for 40 minutes," Flames coach Carey Green said. "There will be times that well play like that. But can we maintain that? We respect our opponent. Their balance even into their bench is outstanding.

"Theyre basically playing four guards with a very athletic center [Devereaux Peters]. That athletic center was the defensive player of the year in the Big East. Their leading scorer, and everybody knows Skylar Diggins, was the player of the year in the Big East. In between is all 5-foot-10, strong shooters.

"The encouraging thing is that we can play them 10 times. And they could beat us nine out of 10 times. We only need to win one."

Liberty-Notre Dame Preview

Posted: at 4:34 pm

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Skylar Diggins was raring to go after a couple of days off. Notre Dame's star point guard, like the rest of her teammates, had been waiting for the NCAA tournament to come around since they were beaten in the finals last season.

After 30 wins, a regular-season Big East title and a disappointing loss in the conference tournament finals, the Irish have a No. 1 seed and now they're ready for what's ahead. Their NCAA trek starts Sunday at home against Liberty in the Raleigh region.

"We were able to rest our bodies and recover," Diggins said. "Now, everybody is so anxious to get back on the court that that is going to play into it. We're fine. We're prepared."

The Irish won their way into the NCAA championship game a year ago by beating Tennessee and UConn back-to-back with Diggins leading the way, averaging 19.3 points and nearly six assists in six tourney games. Then came a six-point loss to Texas A&M in the finals, a defeat that's been a motivating point all season.

Coach Muffet McGraw is convinced Diggins is even better than a year ago, studying film and expanding her game. She's averaged 17 points a game this season.

"She really managed the game better this year. Last year, she did a really good job and in the NCAA tournament, she really stepped forward," McGraw said.

"She knows when to pass and when to shoot. She is comfortable passing, and she isn't trying too hard to score or to make a pass. She takes what the defense gives her. ... Her ability to see the floor and go full speed with the ball makes us a dangerous team in transition."

During practice sessions since losing to UConn in the tournament finals March 6, the Irish have worked hard on rebounding, one of Liberty's strengths.

Liberty (24-8), the Big South champion, outrebounded opponents by an average of 16.4. And 6-3 center Avery Warley averaged 11.6 boards and 13.1 points per game. Devon Brown led the Flames with a 16.9 point average. Liberty must cut down on its turnovers - about 20 per game - and be able to handle Notre Dame's defense led by Diggins.

"It wasn't a shock. We kind of had an idea that we would be playing them," Brown said of facing the Irish.

Life slowly returning to normal in West Liberty

Posted: March 17, 2012 at 2:10 pm

WEST LIBERTY Melissa Stacy walked into the Morgan County clerk's office Friday and transferred ownership of a 2000 Ford Explorer.

That wouldn't be a big deal in normal times, but times haven't been normal in West Liberty since a powerful tornado blasted through the county and city March 2.

The tornado killed six people and injured others in the county, but it also ripped a hole in the fabric of everyday life, destroying, damaging or disrupting businesses, government offices and schools.

Two weeks after the tornado, however, the town is working hard to recover, and services are being restored, residents said Friday.

Some businesses have reopened in their original locations after repairs, while others have found new spaces. One bank, for instance, set up shop in an old grocery store, local officials said.

The post office is in a mobile unit that looks like a concession stand in the parking lot at the IGA, and the health department is in an old bowling alley, according to a list provided by Irene Jenkins, the county emergency manager.

City offices and the police department are open in mobile homes in the parking lot behind the heavily damaged buildings where they used to be.

County offices are scattered among different locations, including the office of a coal company outside town that had closed. Some are in mobile homes, including the office of County Clerk Roger Williams, which reopened Thursday.

"There's a lot of progress," Stacy said.

Jim Ison, who drives through West Liberty frequently on his job as a quality-standards inspector for Kentucky Housing Corp., said he sees a steady decrease in the piles of bricks, splintered wood and other debris.

Liberty Christian's softball team can't hold onto lead; Weed comes back for 12-11 win

Posted: at 2:10 pm

Liberty Christian's softball team found the offense it needed, but its defense allowed Weed to edge the Patriots in the final inning.

A walk and two Liberty errors loaded the bases before a wild pitch allowed Weed's Alyssa Merrill to slide into home in the bottom of the fourth to lift the Cougars past the Patriots 12-11 in the first round of the Liberty Christian Invitational at Big League Dreams' Wrigley Field on Friday.

Liberty (0-4) came out on fire, scoring four runs in each of the first two innings when junior Hannah Knowles roped a two-run triple in the first and a three-run triple to the left field wall in the second to lead early 8-2.

But the Patriots surrendered a nine-run bottom of the second where the Cougars took advantage of six Liberty errors and two timely hits to take the lead.

Two runs scored when Knowles pulled her foot off the bag and Jeni Cheffey followed with an RBI double. Weed's Elyssa Fisher added an RBI single and five more runs scored on wild pitches and passed balls in the frame to give the Cougars (3-1) an 11-8 lead after two innings of play.

"Our bats were alive and we scored a bunch early, but then our pitching struggled and we had a hard time hanging onto the ball," Liberty coach Chuck Rude said.

"We just didn't make any plays and they did."

Liberty didn't waste any time making up the difference as Kelsie Jurin drove in Allysa Barber and Lacy Asdourian singled to load the bases. Katelyn Donovan drew a walk to bring in the 10th run and Knowles knocked in her sixth RBI of the game on a fielder's choice groundout to tie it up at 11-apiece.

Knowles, who was pitching in relief for Asdourian in the middle of the second, held off the Cougars with a solid defensive effort behind her.

But Weed's Cheffey was just as productive in the top of the fourth and held the Patriots scoreless.
