June 2012 New York Liberty Schedule

Posted: May 30, 2012 at 11:14 pm

After a rough start to the 2012 WNBA season, June holds more hope for the New York Liberty. That doesn't mean the schedule gets any easier though, as there are some tough opponents waiting for their chance to play the Liberty.

New York has 10 games in the month of June, starting off with two straight games against the undefeated Indiana Fever on June 2 and 3. Later in the month, New York has to take on the Minnesota Lynx as well; the team that leads the Western Conference with a 4-0 record and is the defending WNBA champions.

New York went 0-4 in the month of May, meaning the team can go nowhere but up at this point. They will need to string some wins together quickly though, because the team could quickly play itself out of contention when it comes to the playoff race.

WNBA Live Access will broadcast all of New York's games in June, with MSG picking up coverage for three others.

Liberty Mutual Insurance Celebrates Three Firefighters For Outstanding Heroism And Community Service With The Liberty …

Posted: at 11:14 pm

BOSTON, May 30, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Liberty Mutual Insurance, one of the nation's leading home and auto insurers, today is celebrating America's firefighters by announcing the recipients of its National Firemark Award. Lieutenants Paul McAllister and Christopher Seelenbrandt of West Warwick, R.I., are recipients of the Liberty Mutual Firemark Award for Heroism; and Lieutenant Robert Hendrigan of Brockton, Mass., has earned the Liberty Mutual Firemark Award for Community Service and Public Education. For their everyday self-sacrifice and tireless efforts to protect and promote public safety, Liberty Mutual will award the West Warwick (IAFF Local 1104) and Brockton (IAFF Local 144) Fire Departments each with a $10,000 grant in their respective winners' honor.

A committee comprised of numerous fire safety organizations selected the Liberty Mutual National Firemark Award winners from among a pool of more than 150 firefighter nominees, each of whom had received a local Firemark Award from a Liberty Mutual Insurance office in their community throughout 2011. The selection committee includes representatives from such fire safety groups as the International Association of Fire Chiefs, the National Volunteer Fire Council, the National Fire Protection Association, the National Association of State Fire Marshals, the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, and the Center for Public Safety Excellence.

"The Liberty Mutual National Firemark Award winners exemplify the unique courage and commitment firefighters demonstrate every day to help us prevent the devastation of a home fire and to protect us when they do occur," said Greg Gordon, Liberty Mutual Insurance senior vice president of Marketing. "As a company that also embraces our responsibility to protect lives and homes, it is fitting for us to honor Firefighters McAllister, Seelenbrandt and Hendrigan, and to celebrate the countless men and women career or volunteer who serve our communities so selflessly."

Lieutenant Paul McAllister and Lieutenant Christopher Seelenbrandt, West Warwick Fire Department

On March 1, 2011, the West Warwick Fire Department conducted an ice-rescue training exercise with four new recruits. Little did they know that only hours later two of their more seasoned firefighters would be in freezing Rhode Island pond waters saving the life of an 8-year-old boy who had fallen through thin ice. Lieutenant Paul McAllister was the first out of the truck and he set out across the ice in his survival suit connected to 100 feet of lifeline, falling through the ice three times along the way. About 20 feet short of reaching the panicked child, the rope reached its end. McAllister unhooked himself and continued without his safety line, reaching the young boy just moments before he lost what was left of a tenuous grip on the ice.

Lieutenant Chris Seelenbrandt, following moments later in the department's hazmat vehicle, arrived to find his colleague stranded more than 40 yards from shore, without a lifeline and with the young boy clinging to his neck. Seelenbrandt crept across the ice with 300 feet of lifeline to rescue them both, ultimately relying on the other West Warwick firefighters on shore to tow all three back in. The boy was treated and released from a Providence hospital later that evening.

West Warwick Fire Chief Joseph Baris says the department will earmark the Liberty Mutual grant toward purchasing a new boat, motor and trailer to aid in future water rescues. The department currently relies on a reconditioned inflatable boat; and that craft only recently replaced a 1954 aluminum boat the department was forced to retire after it proved inadequate during the 2010 floods.

ATLANTA

Tradeport East is one half of a 5,300-acre industrial park that helped Liberty County make a list of the top places in the South for manufacturing operations. Southern Business & Development magazine cited available land ready for development, easy access to highways and the Savannah port, and a qualified workforce for including the southeast Georgia community. Southern Business & Development magazine highlighted the southeast Georgia communitys proximity to the Port of Savannah and a 5,300-acre business park with easy highway access and land ready for development in including Liberty County on its list of the 10 no-brainer locations for manufacturing operations in the South.

The county is the states only community that made the list.

It basically validates what we have been saying regarding having the ingredients needed for a good location and it provides us with another opportunity to tell our story following what the magazine has just done, said Ron Tolley, CEO of the Liberty County Development Authority.

Tolley said the area also has a steady stream of qualified workers, thanks to Fort Stewart. He said hundreds of soldiers stationed on the base leave the service each month and about half want to stay in the area.

That is a significant factor that is a bonus for us. It does give us something that most communities do not have, whether youre looking for forklift drivers or youre looking for someone to manage a team," Tolley said.

Southern Business & Development said Liberty already has a robust manufacturing sector, including several foreign-headquartered companies and exports to 70 countries.

Editors looked at 150 places across the south to compile the list. Liberty County joins Memphis, Tenn., Columbus, Miss., and Henderson, Ky., on the list.

Tolley said a third-party analysis like this can make project managers and site-selection consultants give the county a second or third look.

Liberty County War Memorial Monument rededicated

Posted: May 27, 2012 at 3:12 am

The chiseled names of Cpl. William W. Partlow and 1st Lt. Nolan D. Pickett are separated by four inches on the Liberty County Veterans War Memorial Monument. They are nevertheless inseparable in their honor.

The theme of the May 25 rededication of the monument, which stands to the south of Liberty High Schools War Memorial Stadium, was the indissoluble union of the Supreme Sacrifice of all 126 service members inscribed on that wall and the cause of freedom for which they gave their lives.

Those 126 honored dead, and their fallen comrades, bequeathed liberty to generations, retired Army Lt. Col. Anthony Landry said in his rededication speech.

We are Americans, Landry said, and we do possess the priceless heritage of freedom.

A grateful community embraces those who shed blood for the endurance of that heritage.

My desire is that this monument stand, in a small way, as a symbol of the honor and gratitude that we owe to these fallen warriors, Liberty Mayor Carl Pickett said, before he read stirring letters from the uncle whose name is on that wall.

Dozier Partlow, whose uncles name appears above that of 1st Lt. Pickett, read the history of the memorial, which was built, along with the stadium, by the Liberty Lions Club. Liberty Lions Club President Brett Steed spoke of the monument as a part of a proud Lions tradition. The monument was dedicated in 1947.

A successful fundraising drive that was started in February paid for the beautifying landscaping, the completion of which inspired the monuments rededication.

The trees were removed from behind the monument, giving game-day spectators a clear view of the newly installed flag poles from which Old Glory, the Texas Flag and the POW/MIA Flag fly. Surrounding plants separate the monument grounds from the grassy open space. Ground lighting has been installed.

When the Star-Spangled Banner is played at football games, everyone has a place to turn and to reflect.

Liberty-Madera strikes quickly to win D-V softball title

Posted: May 26, 2012 at 7:17 am

MADERA -- Nothing was going to stop the Liberty-Madera Ranchos High softball team from a fourth consecutive Central Section Division V title.

After thunder cracked ominously in the distance during the national anthem, the Hawks' bats did some thundering of their own in a six-run first inning en route to a 10-0 win Friday over Selma (19-7).

Freshman Renee Ortega delivered the big blow with a bases-clearing double to right-center that put second-seeded Liberty (23-6-1) up 3-0 after four batters.

That relaxed the team and set the tone for the game.

"We've got some girls that had played in games like these, but we've got some that never played in one before so they were flat nervous," Liberty co-head coach Bob Barber said.

Ortega said patience played a role.

"I was waiting to see the right pitch to hit hard on the ground or a hard line drive," she said, "and I got it."

Randi Wallace and Caity McShane added run-scoring singles and the rout was on.

Junior ace Hannah Shevenell threw a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts.

Shevenell struck out the side in the first and fifth innings, and she did not give up a hit until Emery Green hit a bloop single down the left-field line in the fourth.

Liberty rallies for three runs in the seventh inning to win Maryland 2A softball title

Posted: at 7:17 am

Nobody called Sammy Bost out after she stole third and overslid the base, so the Liberty center fielder just kept running.

Suddenly, Bost found herself sliding across home plate without a throw, scoring the winning run that capped a shocking ending to the Maryland 2A championship softball game, and left McDonough feeling it was robbed of a chance at a state title.

I saw [a tag at third base], McDonough Coach Julie Snavely said. I told my girls [the umpire] missed the call, but youve got to move on. Its unfortunate that play ended the ballgame.

Bost stole two bases on the final play of the game, and the Lions scored three runs with nobody out in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat McDonough, 3-2, Friday night at Robert E. Taylor Stadium at the University of Maryland.

The win gives Liberty the first state title in school history; McDonough was denied what would have been its sixth state crown and second in four years.

I overslid the base and I was like Oh my god, Im not letting my team down right now, Bost said. I just got up and ... I was like Okay, Ill go home then.

The wild ending overshadowed a terrific performance by McDonough senior Jazzmyn Hayden, who took a two-hit shutout into the seventh inning and produced the Rams only runs with an RBI double in the first inning and a solo home run in the third.

The Lions opened the bottom of the seventh with two bunt singles and a walk before second baseman Rebecca Oneto hit a two-run single that tied the score and left runners on first and second with nobody out.

Catcher Natalie Gill missed a bunt attempt as Bost and Oneto attempted a double steal, and after the throw to third came in late, Bost slid past the base and appeared to be tagged out by McDonough third baseman Molly Simpson.

I didnt feel a tag, Bost said. I wasnt going to go back into a tag so I figured Id either get in a rundown or go to score.
