MURPHYSBORO The Liberty Theater has been a Murphysboro landmark from almost a century, and now its being recognized as a historically significant building by National Park Service.
The Liberty was recently named to the National Register of Historic Places, making it the sixth building in Murphysboro to garner the honor. Liberty Director Lois Murphy said the process took almost 18 months and involved hours of work.
There was lots of research and everything, she said. It was time-consuming, but I thought it was worth it and not too expen-sive.
Mayor Ron Williams said the national recognition is good for the city.
I think that The Liberty Theater being place on list is just a great, great thing Murphysboro, he said. With all effort thats gone into it with renovations and improvements, its finally paying off. It is for Murphysboro and the area a really neat building that has been saved from ruin.
Rachel Malcolm Ensor, an SIU professor and co-owner of Historic Property Consultants, helped write The Libertys proposal to the Illinois Historic Preservation Board, a first step in getting National Register of Historic Places recognition.
Criteria for making the list include significance in architecture, archaeology, engineering and culture. Historic places may be associated with the lives of significant persons in the past, embody the distinctive characteristics of a type of place or era, or yield important information about history or prehistory.
For The Liberty, its connection was with events that made a significant contribution to the broad patterns of history.
Ensor said The Libertys close affiliation with Hollywood was an important factor in it being placed on the register.
The Liberty Theater falls right in line with the development of the cinema in the United States, she said. Originally The Liberty was a flicker theater for little 15-minute flicker pictures. As the movie industry changed so did the Liberty.

Liberty Mutual to sponsor school trips to USS Constitution
Posted: June 22, 2012 at 3:19 pm
Boston-based Liberty Mutual Insurance said it will now sponsor all free public school field trips to the USS Constitution Museum from September until June 2015.
The museum recently opened its newest interactive exhibit, the Old Ironsides 1812 Discovery Center, which features computer activities simulating shipboard life, interactive lessons about the War of 1812 and its major events, and a large map highlighting personal stories that effect America to this day.
At the USS Constitution Museum, we encourage guests not just to read here, but to do. This is a particularly effective method to use with school groups, for while some learn by reading, some by listening, we all learn by doing, said the museums president Anne Grimes Rand. We are thrilled to be able to help address the needs of our schools and share the singular resources we have developed over time with our public schools, free of charge, thanks to the support and vision of Liberty Mutual Insurance, during this special Bicentennial period.
The U.S. Postal Service also plans to commemorate the bicentennial of the War of 1812 with a newly minted Forever stamp of Old Ironsides that will be unveiled in the Charlestown Navy Yard on Aug. 18.
The image selected by the Postal Service for the stamp is from an early 19th century painting by maritime artist Michele Felice Corne. The painting will be on view for the event at the USS Constitution Museum.
Liberty Mutual had previously announced it was extending its sponsorship its sponsorship of the Boston Pops Fourth of July Fireworks display and concert through 2015.

Boston-based Liberty Mutual Insurance will sponsor all public school visits to the USS Constitution Museum from Sept. 2012 to June 2015, thus allowing for free field trips for students of all ages, in and outside of Massachusetts, the museum said.
The USS Constitution Museum recently opened an interactive exhibit called the Old Ironsides 1812 Discovery Center, which features computer activities simulating shipboard life, interactive lessons about the War of 1812 and its major events, and a feedback wall that enables visitors to deliver their own messages.
In a statement, Liberty Mutual president and chief executive David Long said: By keeping alive the inspiring story of Old Ironsides and its crew, the USS Constitution Museum has developed a range of innovative programs that teach our children about teamwork and service. As a Boston-based company that advocates these same values, we feel the best way to support the Constitutions legacy is to ensure students can experience these life lessons, first hand.
Liberty Mutual Insurance employs more than 45,000 people around the world. As of Dec. 31, it had $117.1 billion in consolidated assets, $99.3 billion in consolidated liabilities, and $34.7 billion in annual consolidated revenue.

Lady Liberty headed to Woodring
Posted: June 21, 2012 at 6:15 am
ENID There will be a homecoming, of sorts, Saturday afternoon at Enid Woodring Regional Airport.
Lady Liberty, an A-26 Invader bomber, is being relocated from Oklahoma City to Woodring by its owners, the American Airpower Heritage Museum, a division of the Commemorative Air Force.
After making a couple of passes over Enid, Lady Liberty is expected to touch down at approximately 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Woodring.
Im ecstatic, said Enid Woodr-ing Regional Airport manager Dan Ohnesorge. It is a neat airplane, a neat addition to our tenant fleet.
A training version of the A-26, the TB-26, was used for advanced pilot training at Vance Air Force Base from World War II until 1955. A TB-26 static display currently is on display outside the wing headquarters building at Vance.
Lady Libertys home hangar at Oklahoma Citys Wiley Post Airport is being sold, Ohnesorge said, so its owners contacted him about relocating to Enid.
Our old city hangar was coming open and we were looking for a tenant, Ohnesorge said.
Ken Larcher, one of the aircrafts pilots, flew up to look at the hangar, and decided it fit his groups needs.
It fit the decor of a World War II-type bomber, Ohnesorge said. It is a round-top hangar. It is rustic. Plus, the airplane fits inside of it and the price was right.
We talked about a couple of issues, and we talked about how excited we would be to have them here.

After getting off to the best start in WNBA history, the Minnesota Lynx came up short for the first time over the weekend.
They'll try to bounce back Thursday night at home, where they haven't lost since the New York Liberty last came to town.
Minnesota averaged 85.8 points in winning its first 10 games before losing 65-62 at Seattle on Sunday. The Lynx had a chance to send the game into overtime despite trailing by as many as 17 points in the second quarter and shooting 37.5 percent, but Maya Moore missed a deep 3-point attempt as time expired.
"I felt like it was on target, just a little short," Moore said. "With one second, having to inbound it and catch and shoot, I thought it was a great look. But it shouldn't have come down to that."
Moore had a team-high 14 points and Seimone Augustus scored 12 as the Lynx's two leading scorers combined to shoot 10 of 30.
"We felt like there were so many opportunities," Moore added. " ... There were so many things in the entire game that could've changed things. But lesson learned. I think this team will definitely take this one, remember it and use it to help us to be better in the future."
Minnesota now returns home, where it's won 11 straight - including last season's title run - since falling 78-62 to New York on Sept. 2. The Liberty shot 13 of 26 from 3-point range in that game and were led by Leilani Mitchell, who made six 3s and scored 24 points.
New York (4-7) is coming off its fourth win in six games, 73-60 in Atlanta on Tuesday. Cappie Pondexter had 14 points and a season-high 13 assists for the Liberty, who were coming off the most lopsided defeat in franchise history, 97-55 at Connecticut on Friday.
"I brought a great deal of energy tonight, which has been inconsistent with us," Pondexter said. "I feel like when we play with a lot of energy it allows us to play both ends of the floor the way we really want to."
Allowing an Eastern Conference-worst 80.6 points per game, New York held the Dream to 35.3 percent shooting.

Pondexter leads Liberty past Dream

ATLANTA The Libertys awful performance in their last game embarrassed Cappie Pondexter.
She was determined not to let it happen again.
I brought a great deal of energy tonight, which has been inconsistent with us, Pondexter said. I feel like when we play with a lot of energy it allows us to play both ends of the floor the way we really want to.
Pondexter had 14 points and a season-high 13 assists and Essence Carson added 14 points in the Libertys 73-60 victory over the Atlanta Dream on Tuesday night.
The Dream dropped their second straight game with Angel McCoughtry, the WNBAs leading scorer and shot blocker, injured and unable to play.
Sancho Lyttle and Lindsey Harding each finished with 13 points for Atlanta (4-7). Lyttle pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.
The Liberty (4-7) had plenty of incentive after last Fridays debacle at Connecticut, a 42-point loss that was the worst in team history and included 34-point halftime deficit that was the largest in league history.
The Liberty, who snapped a two-game skid, never trailed after Leilani Mitchell pulled up for a 15-foot fast-break jumper to make it 13-12 late in the first.
We were so hungry for a win, Mitchell said. We were just playing harder. We were taking it easy in the last couple of practices trying to save our legs for this game.
The Liberty went up 36-30 on Pondexters 19-foot fadeaway in transition in the final minute of the second period.
