Liberty University's net assets headed for $1 billion, thanks to online

Posted: at 4:12 am

Liberty Universitys net assets have sustained a fivefold increase from $150 million to $860 million over the past six years, driven by the rapid expansion of Libertys online programs.

While colleges across the country have struggled to make ends meet during the economic downturn, Libertys financial picture has grown stronger by the year, according to an examination of Libertys IRS 990 tax forms by The News & Advance.

In a nutshell, Libertys net assets show how much the university in Lynchburg is worth after subtracting its debt and other liabilities.

In 2006-07, the universitys net assets were $150 million, according to the 990 tax form, which non-profits must file annually with the IRS. Driven by a growing student body and influx of tuition dollars, Libertys net assets grew to $637 million by 2010-11, the most recent 990 available from the IRS.

As of June, Liberty officials said the school had about $860 million in net assets and expects that number to exceed $1 billion by years end a major milestone for the university.

Weve grown so fast that we cant spend it fast enough, LU Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. said.

Since Liberty is a non-profit, any surplus it generates must be invested back into the school. However, Falwell said there is no strict timeline about when Liberty must use the money; part of Libertys strategy is to build an endowment that will secure the long-term stability of the school.

We want to continue to improve the university and stay on the cutting edge, but we also want to put money away for the future, Falwell said.

For now, Liberty is focused on revitalizing campus and improving its academic programs, Falwell said.

Over past year, Liberty began pouring more than $220 million into construction projects that promise to transform campus over the next decade. Old buildings are being torn down and replaced with Jeffersonian architecture; makeshift dorms will be replaced with high-rise residence halls.

LYNCHBURG, VA. (AP) - Liberty University is studying the possibility of using the James River to generate electricity. The Lynchburg university founded by the late Jerry Falwell has filed an application with the Federal Regulatory Commission proposing to study the feasibility of installing a powerhouse with four generators at the Scotts Mill Dam near Lynchburg. LU spokesman Lee Beaumont told the News & Advance of Lynchburg the university is investigating whether the power source could lead to savings on energy. He said Liberty is amid a review of its energy policy. The application to FERC seeks a preliminary permit. That's a first step in what would be a long licensing process with the agency.

American Liberty Petroleum Corp. Announces Termination of Consulting Agreement with Netherland, Sewell & Associates

Posted: July 21, 2012 at 8:15 am

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

American Liberty Petroleum Corp. (OTCBB: OREO) (herein after American Liberty and/or the Company) announces today that oil and gas consulting services firm Netherland, Sewell & Associates Inc. (NSAI) has terminated its consulting agreement with American Liberty as of July 18, 2012.

On April 27, 2012, American Liberty signed an engagement letter with NSAI to perform consulting petroleum engineering work as needed to assist the Company in determining next steps in the development of its Nevada-based Cortez operation. Though the Company shared information with NSAI after the agreement was signed, NSAI did not provide any specific consulting services before deciding to terminate the agreement.

Prior to the agreements termination, American Liberty had planned to undertake additional steps to stimulate the Paradise 2-12 well, one of two wells located on the 3,840-acre Cortez lease. Previous stimulation efforts included the completion of a solvent (xylene) wash treatment and the installation of a heating system. The NSAI engagement was intended to determine next steps following the completion of the stimulation program, including determining if it would be advisable to drill a third well on the Cortez lease. The Company will now re-evaluate these plans while considering all other development options.

The two wells on the Cortez lease (Cobble Cuesta 1-12 and Paradise 2-12) are situated on the Cobble Cuesta structure. The Cobble Cuesta 1-12 well was drilled on the Cobble Cuesta structures crestal area in 2006-2007 and had shows of live hydrocarbons. The Paradise 2-12 well was drilled in 2010, and included a drillstem test that recovered 87 feet of oil with pressure data indicating a low permeability oil reservoir.

Liberty Tire Recycling Donates Playground Safety Surfacing for New Playground Project at The Children's Inn at the …

Posted: at 2:12 pm

PITTSBURGH, July 19, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Liberty Tire Recycling, the premier provider of tire recycling services in North America, has announced the company will donate its Pinnacle Rubber Mulch and SMARTE playground surface system to KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to saving play for America's children. The donation, which includes 8,200 square feet of Pinnacle Rubber Mulch for landscaping and 4,400 square feet of SMARTE playground safety surfacing, will be used to help build a new playground at The Children's Inn at NIH (The National Institute of Health) on Monday, July 23, 2012.

"We're pleased to work with KaBOOM! to help create a safe and accessible playground for the children and families who stay at The Children's Inn at the National Institute of Health," said Brad Pittam, general manager of LTR Products, a subsidiary of Liberty Tire Recycling. "The SMARTE Surface System made with Pinnacle Rubber Mulch helps protect kids from playground falls and the Pinnacle Rubber Mulch used in landscaping around the playground will ensure the area remains low maintenance and great looking for years to come."

The Children's Inn at NIH is a nonprofit residence on the campus of the NIH where families stay free of charge while their children participate in groundbreaking biomedical research. Families travel from across the country and around the world to stay together with their children at The Inn. Some spend a few days, others months. While the NIH cares for a child's medical needs, The Inn cares for the family's heart, soul and spirit. More than 10,000 children have stayed since The Inn opened in 1990. About 1,500 families stay each year.

Pinnacle Rubber Mulch is a natural-looking mulch alternative that lasts for 12 years. As a playground safety surface, a six-inch layer of Pinnacle Rubber Mulch will cushion a child's fall from as high as 16 feet using half of the material compared to wood mulch. Additionally, rubber mulch is non-allergenic, non-toxic, and harmless to plants, pets and children. It is also clean, minimizes airborne dust and particles, and does not splinter like wood mulch. As an eco-friendly product, Pinnacle Rubber Mulch not only saves trees from the shredder, but also provides an outlet for the millions of scrap tires collected and processed annually.

The SMARTE System utilizes Pinnacle Rubber Mulch made from tires provided by Liberty Tire Recycling for the system's base and impact layer. An artificial turf is installed on top creating a playground surface that is wheelchair accessible, low-maintenance, durable and environmentally friendly.

Wolf-dog Liberty settles into new wolf sanctuary home

Posted: July 18, 2012 at 7:13 pm

LITITZ, Pa. - The wolf-dog met the media Tuesday, panting but content.

The animal formerly known as Levi was introduced to the public with a new name - Liberty - to reflect his connection to Philadelphia, where he was loose in Pennypack Park from March until his capture July 3.

That's his third name in five months; when he was only a ghostly, lurking presence in the park, before anyone knew he was Levi, Liberty was actually called Penny. Life has been changing fast ever since for the young animal, believed to be around 10 months old.

Off dog food these days, Liberty is now eating raw meat, as befits a gray wolf-Malamute hybrid. The belief is, in fact, that he is significantly more wolf than dog - chromosomally connected to legendary moon-howling pack animals who live life on their own terms.

Beyond domesticity, Liberty is too cool for obedience school, and too dangerous to be outfitted with bandannas and expected to catch and return Frisbees like some slobbering Lab in the park.

Instead, he currently lives with his dignity intact at the 22-acre Speedwell Forge Wolf Sanctuary, a private, nonprofit licensed by the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

Liberty was taken there after being trapped by agents of the Commission and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's APHIS Wildlife Services division.

The animal's owner, Kasey Lyons, who didn't have a permit for Liberty - then Levi - was visiting from Florida with the animal last March. Liberty had been a gift from Lyons to his former fiancee.

But love failed, and after the two broke up, the fiancee no longer wanted the wolf-dog. Liberty, collateral damage in the failed romance, suddenly found himself wandering Pennypack Park. It's not clear whether he escaped or was set loose, although unwanted hybrids are typically abandoned, wolf experts say.

On the hoof and all alone, Liberty survived on pet food he'd cleverly pilfered from yards, as well as on pizza and McDonald's burgers that neighbors said they threw him.

Liberty Tax has enhanced its income tax preparation courses to include a focus on IRS registration and accreditation requirements. The companys tax schools and other trainings have incorporated steps to assist its tax school students who are interested in becoming professional tax preparers, obtaining a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) and meeting new certification requirements from the IRS.

ATK Completes Final Milestone for Liberty under NASA's Commercial Crew Development-2 Program

Posted: July 17, 2012 at 11:15 pm

ATK successfully completed the last Liberty space transportation system milestone under the company's unfunded Space Act Agreement (SAA) with NASA for the Commercial Crew Development Program (CCDev-2).

The final milestone under the SAA was a Program Status Review (PSR) for the Liberty system. During the PSR, the Liberty team presented NASA with detailed progress of the program, including integrated master schedule, DAC cycle status, system requirements, software status, flight test plan, system safety review, ground processing certification plan and schedule for initial operation capability.

The CCDev-2 Liberty SAA enabled NASA and the Liberty team to share technical information related to the Liberty transportation system during the preliminary design review phase of the program. ATK completed five milestones and held three Technical Interchange Meetings, all on internal funding.

"It has been a privilege working with NASA to complete the SAA for the Commercial Crew program," said Kent Rominger, ATK vice president and program manager for Liberty. "The feedback we received from the NASA Liberty team has helped further the development of the entire system and we believe ensures the program is on target for Liberty to provide a capable and safe commercial transportation to the International Space Station (ISS) by mid-decade."

Currently, Liberty's schedule includes unmanned test flights in 2014 and 2015, followed by the first crewed flight in late 2015 with Liberty astronauts. Commercial operational flights to take NASA astronauts to the ISS would begin in 2016.

ATK also hosted a Liberty Supplier conference the day following the PSR. This meeting, held in Florida, brought together more than 20 of Liberty's major suppliers to support Liberty development activities.

"Our supply base is critical to Liberty's success as we move quickly through development of the entire system," said Rominger. "As a commercial program we need to ensure we are a strong team in order to provide the best service and grow a profitable business."

About Liberty

Liberty is a complete commercial crew space system that includes a composite spacecraft, abort system, launch vehicle and ground and mission operations, all of which were designed from inception to meet NASA's human-rating requirements. ATK is the prime contractor with Astrium and Lockheed Martin serving as major subcomponent providers. Additional subcontractors for Liberty include Safran/Snecma, Moog Inc., Honeywell, Astrotech Space Operations (ASTC), Aerojet, Reynolds, Smith and Hills, Teledyne Brown, Dynamic Concepts, Inc. and Hamilton Sundstrand.

The Liberty system team is located across 17 states including Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Utah, Virginia and Washington. The commercial program will sustain thousands of jobs as well as bring approximately 600 new jobs across the country.
