The New York Liberty's goal for the second half of the season is to win 11 of their remaining games. They got off to a good start in their return from the WNBA's Olympic break.
Cappie Pondexter scored 24 points to lead the Liberty to a 79-66 victory over the first-place Connecticut Sun on Thursday night.
Plenette Pierson, returning after missing the New York's last eight games before the hiatus due to a left knee strain, had 16 points to help the Liberty (7-12) snap a three-game skid.
''If we win 11 games we give ourselves a chance to make a playoff push,'' Pondexter said. ''It's attainable. Right now we got 10 to go. I really feel we have a chance to win some games on the road.''
The Liberty, who have 15 games remaining, play their next five on the road - starting with a rematch against Connecticut on Saturday night. They then close with seven of their last 10 at home.
Renee Montgomery scored 16 points, and Allison Hightower and Mistie Mims added 12 each for the Sun (15-5), who snapped a five-game winning streak.
''We struggled tonight,'' Connecticut coach Mike Thibault said. ''We shot terrible in the second half and we turned it over.''
Tina Charles, who helped lead the United States to a gold medal at the London Games, had just four points and 12 rebounds, while fellow Olympian Asjha Jones sat out due to a strained left Achilles' tendon - an injury she was dealing with before the break.

Pondexter, Pierson help Liberty beat Sun 79-66

Connecticut dropped to 8-2 on the road and had its lead over second-place Indiana in the Eastern Conference cut to three games.
While the Olympic break helped teams like the Liberty get healthy and refreshed, Thibault believes it disrupted the Sun's momentum.

Liberty to reorganise, commits to WSBK
Posted: August 16, 2012 at 7:12 pm
Liberty Racing reaffirms its commitment to the World Superbike Championship despite confirming it won't be part of the series' first visit to Russia.
Speculation regarding the future of the Czech-based team was raised when it wasn't included on Infront's provisional entry list for next week's Moscow event, the series' first-ever foray into Russia.
Liberty has now formally confirmed its absence for that event, but maintains it will be present for the final three events, starting with the Nurburgring on September 7-9, and also reaffirmed its commitment to competing in 2013.
In the meantime, Liberty Racing's press release suggests the team will undergo a restructure across the team, a move that it says also concerns riders Jakub Smrz, Maxime Berger and Brett McCormick, though it isn't clear whether such a statement relates to the final rounds or for the 2013 season.
The last part of the season is a prelude to a constructive reorganisation of its [Liberty Racing's] human, technical and logistical resources for the next racing season, a press release read.
Looking for the next round, the Liberty Team is overhauling its staff organization and sport planning for next year, when Liberty Racing will be at the start of the World Superbike Championship determined to improve its results.
That decision involves also the riders of the Czech team, Kuba Smr and Maxime Berger, who will arrive in Germany at the beginning of September ready and motivated, while the recovery Brett McCormick is ongoing.
The Liberty Racing Team continues in its commitment to motorsport not only animated by the desire to obtain significant performance results but also investing in an increasingly profitable and targeted way, thus building its future by analysing and improving its present with care and foresight.
Having made a solid debut in 2011, Liberty Racing has been embroiled in controversy at various points this season, most notably its retort against Infront over the handling of the cancelled Monza races and the acrimonious split with its lead rider Sylvain Guintoli last month.
Despite this, Liberty Racing has achieved several landmarks in 2012, with Guintoli scoring its first win at Assen, while the Frenchman and Smrz have notched up three pole positions between them.

Western Liberty Reports Smaller Second-Quarter Loss; Nonperforming Assets Rise
Posted: August 15, 2012 at 9:14 pm
Posted: Aug. 15, 2012 | 11:41 a.m. Updated: Aug. 15, 2012 | 12:28 p.m.
Western Liberty Bancorp Inc., the parent company of Service1st Bank of Nevada, posted a smaller second-quarter loss than last year, despite a modest increase in nonperforming assets mostly associated with its commercial real estate portfolio.
The Las Vegas-based company lost $1.5 million, or 11 cents per share, compared with a loss of $4.6 million, or 30 cents a share, during second-quarter 2011.
Western Liberty in the quarter increased the size of its loan portfolio to $104.8 million, up from $101.5 million in the second quarter of 2011. Nonperforming assets totaled $26.5 million, up from $14.1 million in the same period last year.
"Our loan portfolio continues to stabilize, with nonperforming loans down $3.5 million from year end," said William Martin, CEO of Western Liberty. "While we still have a lot of work to do, we believe the steps we are taking will help us achieve our operating goals."
Martin said the bank's "capital remains exceptionally strong."
The company said in its quarterly financial report released late Tuesday that most problem loans were in its commercial real estate portfolio. Western Liberty's total assets were $198.7 million, compared with $223.3 million in the second quarter of 2011.
Service1st Bank operates two branches in Southern Nevada. Western Liberty also owns Las Vegas Sunset Properties, a company to manage under-performing and nonperforming loans as well as foreclosed real estate connected to the bank.

Peoria Liberty High School football goes on the defensive
Posted: at 9:14 pm
by Jason Stone - Aug. 15, 2012 11:31 AM Special for The Republic
Peoria Liberty's football team was one running back away from making the state semifinals last year. Unfortunately, that running back was on the other team.
Had it not been for Phoenix Arcadia's Sosaia Maafu ripping off more than 250 yards in the quarterfinals, it may have been Liberty playing in the Division III semifinals last year. As it was, Arcadia rallied from a 17-0 deficit behind Maafu to end Liberty's season in a heartbreaking way, 35-34.
This year, the team hopes its defense is ready, and coach Dan Filleman has brought in an experienced defensive coach to help make sure of it. Former Phoenix Moon Valley and Goodyear Millennium head coach Mark Smith has come on as defensive coordinator as nine new starters join the mix.
A shored-up defense can only mean bad news for opponents. Liberty has lost only two regular-season games in its three official seasons at the varsity level, and Filleman has quietly done one of the West Valley's best coaching jobs, leading the team to a 30-5 record and three playoff appearances over that span.
The return of senior quarterback Tyler Rogers is sparking more optimism this season. In a breakout junior year, Rogers passed for almost 2,500 yards and had 30 touchdown passes. He also rushed for 747 yards.
"Tyler is a hard worker and does all the right things in the offseason," Filleman said. "For him, he's had improvement just from his maturity and understanding of the game and the coverages. He's picking all those things up."
If Rogers is to put up similar numbers this year, he'll have to do it without receiver Paul Panaccione, who caught 19 touchdown passes last season and now plays baseball at Grand Canyon University.
Filleman said a talented group of six receivers, including a freshman, are all going to make contributions in making up for Panaccione.
"I think the receiving group is still going to be pretty good," Filleman said. "We've had some guys step up."

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Liberty Tax (TAX) invites the public to learn tax preparation and work toward IRS registration in its fall tax classes at convenient locations across the country and online. With job growth still weak, and the unemployment rate still hovering around 8.3 percent, many job seekers may be exploring educational opportunities that can help them develop an extra marketable skill. Liberty Tax is planning to staff up at its offices by tax season and fill positions including tax preparers, office managers, office staff, and marketers.
The companys tax schools and other trainings have incorporated steps to assist its tax school students who are interested in becoming professional tax preparers and obtaining a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) from the IRS. The companys ten-week tax school offers the chance to explore personal tax-savings advantages and acquire a new hands-on skill that may lead to certification and flexible employment opportunities in the tax industry. No previous tax preparation experience is required to enroll in the tax course.
Anyone and everyone can take our classes. The main requirement is the willingness to learn individual tax preparation, and apply the tax code to many situations. Its a great way to catch up on the latest tax changes and life changes that affect ones individual taxes, commented John Hewitt, CEO of Liberty Tax Service.

Liberty Pizza wins WayCo softball title
Posted: at 2:16 am
Mark Foreman is one of the few who now has a soft spot for summer traffic in Boston. I was pretty nervous coming into the playoffs, said Foreman. (Brian) Flynn and (Kyle) Daly had hockey the same night as the second and third rounds and I told them they could go to hockey if they wanted. The traffic was so bad they ended up coming to softball.
Just as Flynn and Daly were scheduled to take the ice in Marlborough, the two hoisted WayCos version of Lord Stanley and celebrated with their Liberty Pizza teammates.
Liberty finished the regular season with losses to Henleys, Parmenter and a tie against John C. Bryant. If youre scoring at home thats 0-2-1 against the bottom three teams in the league.
After stumbling head first into the playoffs, Liberty defeated Haffey Construction 12-9 to set up a Wednesday night clash with first-place/two-loss Pro-Tech Auto.
Pro-Techs lineup is jam packed with great hitters; Ian Bonner, Matt Crismond, Wade Critides, Riley Starr, and Robby Barnes are just a few of the names in a lineup that perked up the opposing outfield. The only thing in the way was the unhittable Andrew Saltzman. Saltzman has spent his five seasons on the mound and former WayCo First Team pitcher.
Allowing two runs over seven innings, Saltzman was like Pedro Martinez in 99. Saltzman stifled the Pro-Tech attack while the Liberty offense scored five in the first and continued to build the lead before prevailing 9-2.
The outfield of Foreman, Jason Simches, Jay Saltmarsh, and Flynn was spectacular throughout.
On the other side of ballpark, Redfin was closing out a strong Mastodon Moving team to set up a Redfin vs. Liberty final. Two weeks earlier Redfin massacred Liberty 30-12 and batted around three times in the first. But the rematch would hold very few similarities.
In identical fashion as the Pro-Tech game, Liberty scored six runs in the second and four more in the third.
While the runs came in a hurry, Saltzman continued to frustrate hitters with a concoction of pitches that kept some of the leagues best guessing. Saltzman challenges hitters like nobody else, said Foreman. He goes after the best players in the league and his fielding is equal to his pitching.
