Liberty’s Maffei Says Starz May Hold More Value to Others

Posted: at 6:12 am

By Andy Fixmer and Alex Sherman - 2012-09-13T04:00:01Z

Liberty Media Corp. (LMCA)s Starz premium cable channel may be more valuable to another owner, Chief Executive Officer Greg Maffei said, signaling a possible sale of the network after a split planned for later this year.

Starz, with 20.7 million subscribers, would offer a media company that operates other premium cable channels synergies that dont exist for Liberty Media, Maffei said yesterday at a Bank of America-sponsored investor conference in Beverly Hills, California.

Liberty, based in Englewood, Colorado, said on Aug. 8 that it planned to spin off all of its assets not associated with Starz LLC into a separate company by the end of this year. Starz, which competes with Time Warner Inc. (TWX)s HBO, CBS Corp. (CBS)s Showtime and Epix, owned by three movie studios, will have about $1.5 billion in debt and an undetermined amount of cash.

Liberty Chairman John Malone has used tracking stocks and financial transactions over the years to pursue tax benefits and make its diversified assets more attractive to shareholders. They included the separation of Liberty Interactive (LINTA), owner of the shopping network QVC.

The Class A tracking shares of Liberty Media fell 0.8 percent to $102.52 yesterday in New York. The companys interests include stakes in the Atlanta Braves baseball team, Sirius XM Radio Inc. (SIRI) and Live Nation Entertainment Inc. (LYV)

Pondexter lifts Liberty past last-place Mystics

Posted: at 6:12 am

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- Trailing late in the third quarter of a game they needed to win, the New York Liberty picked up their defensive intensity and ran away from the Washington Mystics.

Cappie Pondexter scored 22 points to lead the Liberty to a 75-62 victory over the last-place Mystics on Wednesday night. Nicole Powell had 15 points and Kia Vaughn added 10 points and 10 rebounds to help New York (13-17) finish 4-2 on a six-game homestand - including two wins against Washington.

The Liberty also moved a half-game ahead of Chicago for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

''It was an ugly win, but I'm glad we pulled it out in the fourth quarter,'' Pondexter said. ''We focused a little more, we began to help each other. I thought we rebounded well, forced them to make tough jump shots.''

Pondexter praised Vaughn's play in the final quarter, when the center and Plenette Pierson had eight points apiece to help New York outscore Washington 19-7 in the period. Vaughn had her first double-double of the season.

''I thought she played great down the stretch, she was confident,'' Pondexter said. ''The last two games we actually were talking about that baseline jumper, where she's great at. She focused in on doing it ... especially in the fourth quarter. I'm happy she was finally able to display the kind of basketball she's been trying.''

Monique Currie scored a season-high 24 points for Washington (5-25), which has lost nine straight. The Mystics dropped to 1-15 on the road this season, with their lone win against the Liberty on July 13 in the last game before the league's monthlong Olympic break.

''We played well throughout the game except for the fourth quarter,'' Currie said. ''We got cold and the Liberty were able to take advantage of that.''

The Liberty grabbed the lead with an 11-2 run that started at the end of the third and carried over into the fourth. Pondexter made a 3-pointer with about 28 seconds left in the third to put the Liberty in front 56-55, and Vaughn opened the fourth with back-to-back jumpers to extend the lead to five with 7:23 remaining.

Pondexter's 3 gave New York a 67-58 advantage with 4:43 to go, and Washington got no closer than seven the rest of the way. The Liberty scored the final six points of the game.

Liberty Ross didn't leave house after affair shock

People News

Liberty Ross with Rupert Sanders

Liberty Ross didn't leave her house for 'seven weeks' as she tried to deal with her husband's affair with Kristen Stewart.

The model appeared on the catwalk to showcase Alexander Wang's Spring 2013 collection at New York Fashion Week at the weekend in what was her first modelling assignment since it was revealed her director husband Rupert Sanders, 41, had an illicit relationship with the 22-year-old actress after meeting her on the set of 'Snow White and the Huntsman'.

Although Liberty, 33, looked confident on the catwalk, she confessed she hadn't dared leave her home in the wake of the scandal.

Speaking to The Cut at the show's after-party, she said: 'I hadn't actually been out of my house for seven weeks so I was really anxious. But it felt amazing.'

Liberty did not dump Rupert after learning of his affair with Kristen - who was in a four-year relationship with her 'Twilight' co-star Robert Pattinson - and is believed to be prepared to work to save their marriage for the sake of their children Skyla, seven, and five-year-old Tennyson.

A source recently said: 'It's still too early to tell what will happen. She is talking to and seeing Rupert now for the kids, but as far as the marriage she's still processing everything that happened ... No decisions have been made. It's been very hard on her dealing with this but she is very strong and keeping private about it.'

Robert split from Kristen after he discovered her affair in July and he has now put the Los Angeles home they shared on the market.

Liberty 73, Sparks 71

Posted: September 10, 2012 at 9:14 am

UpdatedSep 9, 2012 9:07 PM ET

Cappie Pondexter had 21 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, Plenette Pierson scored 17 points, and the New York Liberty rallied to beat the Sparks 73-71 Sunday.

Essence Carson scored 14 points, including 11 during a 21-3 run in the third quarter that gave the Liberty (12-17) the lead after they trailed by 14 points. New York also trailed by 15 points in the first half.

''We fought hard,'' said Pondexter, who also had eight assists. ''At one point we were down almost 16 points. I told the guys at halftime that if we fight back and be victorious, it's going to feel even better than (just) winning.''

Coupled with Chicago's 82-77 loss at Connecticut, New York moved a half-game ahead of Chicago for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Liberty have five games remaining - at home against Washington on Wednesday, followed by road games against the Mystics, San Antonio and Tulsa, and a home date against the Shock in the season finale on Sept. 22.

''We've got to play like we have to win every game,'' Liberty coach John Whisenant said. ''If we get into the playoffs with a three-game series and we play as hard as we did tonight, there won't be anybody more athletically gifted like we played tonight.''

Kristi Toliver scored 17 points, Candace Parker had 14 points and 15 rebounds, and rookie Nneka Ogwumike added 13 points for the Sparks (20-10). Los Angeles, which has lost four of its last five, remained two games ahead of San Antonio for second place in the West. The Silver Stars lost 81-62 to Minnesota earler Sunday.

''We have plenty of stuff to move forward with in terms of just trying to be the best playoff team we can be,'' Sparks coach Carol Ross said. ''We still have more business to take care of before we get to the fun stuff.''

Carson's 3-pointer tied the score at 70-all with 48 seconds remaining, and Pondexter made two free throws about 26 seconds later to put the Liberty ahead.

Pondexter carries Liberty to victory

Cappie Pondexter had 21 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, Plenette Pierson scored 17 points, and the Liberty rallied to beat the Sparks 73-71 yesterday in Newark.

Essence Carson scored 14 points, including 11 during a 21-3 run in the third quarter that gave the Liberty (12-17) the lead after they trailed by 14 points. The Liberty also trailed by 15 points in the first half.

Los Angeles, which has lost four of its last five, remained two games ahead of San Antonio for second place in the West. The Silver Stars lost 81-62 to Minnesota earlier yesterday.

Carsons 3-pointer tied the score at 70-all with 48 seconds remaining, and Pondexter made two free throws about 26 seconds later to put the Liberty ahead.

Ebony Hoffman made 1 of 2 free throws for Los Angeles with 15 seconds remaining. On the ensuing inbounds play, the Sparks double-teamed Pondexter and tied her up when she received the pass near half-court, forcing a jump ball between her and the Sparks DeLisha Milton-Jones.

The Sparks grabbed the tipped ball and called timeout. Toliver then missed a 3 with about 5 seconds remaining, Pondexter corralled the loose ball, was fouled and made 1 of 2 from the line. She missed the second free throw, Parker got the ball and when she dribbled it was knocked away by Pondexter as time expired. After a lengthy video review, the officials ruled there was no time remaining when the ball went out of bounds.

"We didnt play very well in the second half," Toliver said. "It is something we are trying to battle through. We are continuing to learn lessons on the road. Hopefully we can learn, grow, and get better for the playoffs."
