ESPN Wants Everyone To Know They’re Not Actually Liberal And They’ve Got Math To Prove It – Deadspin

Posted: June 6, 2017 at 6:40 am

Amid absurd claims that ESPNs so-called liberal bias has caused a drop in viewership in recent monthsan opportunistic and disingenuous reading of the networks financial troubles, which were primarily provoked by the Worldwide Leaders failure to adapt quickly enough to technological innovations and the fact that it pays huge sums for the rights to things like Monday Night Football games no one cares aboutESPN released certain findings from a two-year long research project about viewers opinions on ideological bias.

Cherry-picked figures published in ESPNs press release show that 64 percent of respondents believe ESPN is getting it right in terms of mixing sports news and political issues. They also say that the proportion of viewers who see a bias in the programming has not changed since October 2016. ESPN didnt specify the percentage in the release, but a spokesman told Deadspin the proportions were 28 percent in October and 30 percent now, a change which is not statistically significant.

The release said that of those who see a bias, 30 percent actually believe ESPN expresses a conservative viewpoint. The release also omitted the percentage of viewers who thought the network expressed a liberal viewpoint, but the spokesman said that figure is 63 percent.

Finally, the release said the findings showed that conservatives and Republicans actually rate ESPN higher now than they did in October:

Using a 1-10 scale (with 10 being the best score), strong conservatives rank ESPN at 7.2 and Republicans give a 7.1, both up 0.5 from October. That compares to liberals and Democrats (each at 7.0), and is close to an 8, which is considered highly rated (45 percent of the total sample scored ESPN 8-10).

ESPN drew this conclusion from the research:

Do some Americans disagree with how certain societal issues are discussed on ESPN platforms when they intersect with the world of sports? No doubt.

Does it affect their viewing behavior? Not in any material way.

Hear that, advertisers? Investors, you listening? ESPNs conclusion from the findings is very likely correct. But theres another conclusion to be drawn from ESPN touting these stats: The network wants everyone to know its not a bulwark of social justice warriors spouting liberal opinions. (Just look that those ratings from conservatives!) Maybe its no longer beneficial for ESPN to be seen as the progressive network that had the outspokenly liberal stars of Hamilton perform at its annual presentation to advertisers just last year and then went on to position itself as the standard bearer for inclusion and diversity. Maybe its liberal persona, which played well last springway, way back when no one actually thought that a dusty stump of a reality TV star who said horrible things about just about everyone who wasnt a white man could become presidentis no longer good for business. Maybe, now, as Warriors fan Kevin Draper predicted, ESPN feels the need to play down that carefully curated part of its business model.

Jemele Hill and Michael Smith are SportsCenter anchors; Bomani Jones and Pablo Torre are getting their own show; and other faces who arent white and male are still prominently featured on the network. Shows like Around the Horn,Highly Questionable, and Outside the Lines still regularly engage with political and social issues. All of this is happening; ESPN just seems less inclined to brag about it now.

ESPNs presentation to advertisers this year mostly steered clear of talking about diversity and cultural change and politics. The research findings that ESPN released today, along with the networks announcement that Hank Williams Jr., the musician who was removed from his gig as the Monday Night Football opener when he compared Obama to Hitler, was retuning to the show (ESPN said the timing of the research release and the Williams announcement was not coordinated), is just another indication of something. ESPN, perhaps drawn by the bottom line, seems to be sliding back to the status quo. The right thing aligns with what makes sense for exactly as long as it does.

ESPN going all-out to prove it’s not actually liberal – New York Post

Posted: at 6:40 am

ESPN has cleared itself of not growing too liberal. But for the conservatives who dont buy that, heres Hank Williams Jr.!

In purportedly unrelated announcements, the Worldwide Leader announced on Monday that 1) an ESPN-commissioned research group found that ESPN is getting it right in mixing political and sports coverage, in addition to finding the proportion of people who see a political slant in ESPNs coverage is not growing, and 2) the network is rehiring Williams, the conservative firebrand.

Well start with item 2. Williams is bringing All His Rowdy Friends back to Monday Night Football for the first time since 2011. The country singer had participated in the Monday night broadcasts since 1989, playing versions of a song that would always feature, Are you ready for some football?

ESPN pulled the broadcast staple six years ago, after he went on Fox News to compare a meeting of then-President Obama and then-Rep. House Speaker John Boehner to a meeting between Adolf Hitler andIsraeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

In response to ESPN pulling the song for one week, Williams was enraged: After reading hundreds of emails, I have made MY decision, he wrote on Oct. 6, 2011. By pulling my opening Oct 3rd, You (ESPN) stepped on the Toes of The First Amendment Freedom of Speech, so therefore Me, My Song, and All My Rowdy Friends are OUT OF HERE. Its been a great run.

Six years, a new White House regime and a rumbling that ESPN is too liberal later, the two sides are finding common ground. Williams is back in the spotlight with a company that is trying to disprove that liberal politics have anything to do with declining ratings and subsequent layoffs.

Beyond rehiring a polarizing personality, ESPN composed a public relations piece Monday that highlighted findings from a May 3-7 survey that studied a perceived liberal bias. The full survey results from Langer Research Associates of New York were not made available, but ESPN promoted the discovery that 64 percent of respondents think Bristol is getting it right in walking the politics/sports tightrope. Ten percent had no opinion, while 8 percent wanted more politics in broadcasts.

A network that fired noted conservative meme-purveyor Curt Schilling emphasized italics and all that 30 percent actually believe ESPN expresses a conservative viewpoint.

The most important takeaway for ESPN, though, is that both Republicans and Democrats rated the network highly. On a scale to 10, Republicans gave the Worldwide Leader a 7.1 (up .5 from October) and Democrats rated ESPN as a 7.0.

In liberal Portland, conservatives struggle to make their voices heard – Christian Science Monitor

Posted: at 6:40 am

June 5, 2017 Portland, Ore.Thousands of demonstrators and counter protesters converged in downtown Portland, Ore., on Sunday, a day marked by multiple arrests and clashes between police and protesters.

A pro-President Trump free speech rally drew several hundred to a plaza near City Hall more than a week after two Portland men were fatally stabbed trying to stop a man from shouting anti-Muslim insults at two teenage girls on a light-rail train.

That rally was met across the street by hundreds of counter-protesters organized by immigrant rights, religious, and labor groups. They said they wanted to make a stand against hate and racism.

Portland police said Sunday evening that 14 people were arrested, and several dozen knives, bricks, sticks and other weapons were seized.

By late afternoon, police closed nearby Chapman Square where a separate group of protesters many wearing masks and black clothing and identified as anti-fascists also demonstrated. Police used flash-bang grenades and pepper balls to disperse that crowd after saying protesters were hurling bricks and other objects at officers.

The people gathered at the free speech rally organized by the conservative group Patriot Prayer and counter-protesters at City Hall were not involved in those clashes, police said.

After several dozen demonstrators began marching north of the initial rally locations, police officers moved in and blocked them. They detained a large crowd in the street, including several journalists.

People identified as participating in criminal activity would be arrested, police said. Everyone else was eventually released after officers took photographs of their identification.

Sunday's event was organized by the group Patriot Prayer and billed as Trump Free Speech Rally in "one of the most liberal areas of the West Coast."

Rally organizer Joey Gibson held a moment of silence for the two men who were stabbed to death and pleaded with the crowd to refrain from violence. He later told them that goal is to wake up the liberty movement. "It's OK to be a conservative in Portland," he said.

Last week Mayor Ted Wheeler unsuccessfully tried to have the permit for the free speech rally revoked, saying it could further enflame tensions following the May 26 stabbings.

The suspect in the light-rail stabbings, Jeremy Joseph Christian attended a similar rally in late April wearing an American flag around his neck and carrying a baseball bat. Police confiscated the bat, and he was then caught on camera clashing with counter-protesters.

In a video posted on Facebook, Gibson condemned Mr. Christian and acknowledged that some rallies have attracted "legitimate Nazis." He described the attacker on the light rail as "all crazy" and "not a good guy."

Matthew Eggiman, who lives in Corvallis, said he showed up Sunday to oppose bigotry and racism. He worried that that hateful rhetoric would embolden others. But he also condemned protesters who show up hoping to provoke violence.

The Rev. Diane Dulin of the United Church of Christ said in a statement ahead of the day's events that any act of violence in the community should be met by non-violence.

"We build our hope and our stamina for justice by showing up," said Dulin, part of a coalition of groups that organized rally to oppose hate.

Authorities say that on May 26 Mr. Christian killed two men and injured another on the light-rail train when they tried to help after he verbally abused two young women, one wearing a hijab. Christian is charged with aggravated murder and other counts.

The concerns over the Portland rally come amid a wider debate in the United States about the First Amendment, often in liberal cities like Portland and Berkeley, Calif., and on college campuses, where violent protests between far-right and far-left protesters have derailed appearances by contentious figures. Associated Press Writers Phuong Le in Seattle and Manuel Valdes in Portland contributed to this report.

Alberta Liberals elect David Khan as new leader – Calgary Herald

Posted: at 6:40 am

David Khan.

The newly elected leader of the Alberta Liberals says he will focus on rebuilding and re-energizing the party.

Calgary lawyer David Khan won the leadership Sunday evening with 54.8 per cent of the vote, defeating his sole opponent, Kerry Cundal. There were 1,671 total votes and 10 abstentions.

Its been a whirlwind, its been a really busy past two months, but Im so excited about the energy in this room, Khan told a room of supporters at Hotel Arts.

There are so many Liberals, old and new, that are part of our party now and Im really excited about moving liberalism forward in Alberta.

Khan served as the Alberta Liberals executive vice-president before entering the race. He ran as a candidate in Calgary-Buffalo in the 2015 provincial election and as a byelection candidate in Calgary-West in 2014.

His immediate focus is to unite liberals in Alberta and become a real force in the next provincial election.

Make no mistake, it is not Liberal ideas, it is not Liberal values and its not even the Liberal name that has held our party back. We need to stay true to ourselves and who we are and what we stand for, he said.

Theres new people, theres new energy, and we need a new vision and need to move this province forward for the benefit of all.

The only Liberal to be elected in the 2015 general election was Calgary-Mountain View MLA David Swann. Khan hopes to dramatically improve on that result.

That was a change election, that was an anomaly. Thats not the support that we have going forward, he said.

Khan said organizing, fundraising and electing more Liberals are the most crucial areas that need improvement.

Financial reports for the first quarter posted on the Elections Alberta website in April showed the Alberta Liberals and its constituency associations raised $47,959 for the period. For comparison, the governing NDP took in $373,060.

History isnt why we are here today, Khan said. We are here for the future, and it looks promising for Liberals and all Albertans.

Ossoff Out: After Talking Big Game, Georgia Liberal Dodges CNN Debate Ahead of Special Election – Townhall

Posted: at 6:40 am

In arecent post about Democrats finally bagging a pair of special election legislative pick-ups in New Hampshire and New York last month-- which came just prior to a very flawed Republicandefeating an even more flawed Democrat in Montana's special Congressional race -- I highlighted a poll out of Georgia showing liberal Jon Ossoff opening up a seven-point lead over conservative Karen Handel in theclosely-watched GA-06 race. Voters in that traditionally-Republican but Trump-skeptical district (Romney won it handily, Trump barely) will choose their next Congressperson in a June 20th runoff. Peach State Republicans will openly concede that the contest is very close and will boil down to turnout, but they've pushed back hard against that particular survey, arguing that theirinternal numbers look neck-and-neck. Sure enough, afresh poll taken just after Memorial Day weekend shows the race as a jump ball:

The Real Clear Politicsaverage --which includes the previous outlier, withall other polls well within themargin-of-error-- gives Ossoff a tenuous lead oftwo percentage points. Havingfailed to secure an outright majority in April's initial election, thepro-Obamacare Pelosi Democrat challenged his Republican opponent to half a dozendebates. After the GOP nominee declined to participate inone proposed debate in early May, Ossoffpronounced himself "available" and "always up for" a debate. Now, he's ducking forums, abandoning his 'let's debate six times!' bravado. On second thought, how about two? And definitely not on CNN:

By referring to Ossoff's "fictitious narrative and flimsy resume," the Handel campaign is no doubt seeking to highlight the young liberal'sdubious posture as a fiscal hawk, and hishabitually-exaggerated "national security" credentials. And Republicans rarely miss a chance to point out thatthe vast majority of Ossoff's flood ofcampaign donations have arrived from out of state, including acritical mass from left-wing California (especially theSan Francisco Bay area). Perhaps CNN could sweeten the pot for Ossoff in an effort to make him feel more at home by offering to hold the debate somewhere other than the Sixth Congressional District, where the Democratdoes not actually live. I'll leave you with a fewpositivetelevision ads from the Handel campaign, one of whichrefutes the inevitable Democraticattacks that she -- the only woman in the race -- is weak on "women's health:"

A Week Of Surfing On A Sea Of Liberal Tears – Townhall

Posted: Jun 05, 2017 12:01 AM

It was an undeniably awesome week when measured by the only metric that truly matters, the amount of pain inflicted upon liberals. Now, we are not sadists; we dont delight in watching liberals suffer because their suffering itself makes us happy (Okay, it makes us a little happy). Rather, liberals misery is an important teaching aid that might succeed in instructing them in the folly of their poisonous, ridiculous ideology, since reason doesnt work. And they had better learn and change their dangerous course before we all end up here.

Also, some sanctimonious jerks who pretend to be conservative humiliated themselves again, and thats always fun.

The big event was when President Trump did something that has caused the liberal elite and the conservative Wormtongue contingent to wet their collective Underoos. He chose democracy, science, and normal Americans over the elitist twits of the pagan climate cult.

Horrors! An American president choosing Pittsburgh over Paris Oh, well, I never!

The Paris Accords were apparently such a big deal and so mightily important that there was no need to submit this proposed radical restructuring of our economy and the crippling costs it would impose upon us to the representatives of the people. Consent of the governed? No time for such technicalities! In a hundred years it might might be slightly warmer!

To argue for the Paris Accords is to argue against democracy incredibly, they wanted to deny us any say in our electric bills tripling and in hundreds of thousands of our citizens being tossed out of work to please the Chardonnay-swilling swells of San Francisco and Manhattan. They all know this treaty would never pass so they decided to make a treaty without having it ratified senators have to answer to actual voters, and when you vote to give Third World dictators billions of bucks from your constituents pockets, they resent it. Plus, its super hard to explain why were meeting one standard and China gets to meet a different (and much lower) one. And all to attain maybe a fractional decrease in the temperature a century from now. Maybe. Unless a volcano erupts or something else happens that changes things, in the way temperatures changed long before Exxon came along.

Basically, it was a bogus goal based on a fake crisis designed to justify a massive transfer of wealth and power away from us and to the liberal elite. They call that #science.

And Trump nuked it. Killed it dead. Their screams of pain and wailing about earth crimes and eco treason are a beautiful symphony, and their response to it all was illustrative:

Why shouldnt our representatives get to vote on this treaty in the Senate like the Constitution says?

Were all going to die!

Why should China and India get to pollute more than us?

Were all going to die!

How is writing checks to Third World countries going to help the climate?

Dont you see? Were all going to die!

Well, Im convinced, but not how they intended. And not by them either, but by the shrieks of terror from the crony capitalist contingent and its zillionaire members like Elon Musk and the GE chairman who fear their government subsidy gravy train may be derailing. Any time the corporate rent-seekers have the sadz, I have the happyz.

Of course, we also have the pseudo-con contingent coming along trying to step on the GOPs Schumer. Mitt Romney piped up that leaving the Paris Accords is terrible essentially because his rich buddies and the Euros think so. Great, he and Hillary agree. You can be sure Jeb! will be weighing in soon about how putting our people out of work to cater to the delusions of Angela Merkel is an act of love.

The other big deal came on the cultural front when Kathy Griffin forgot that normal people have an aversion to beheading political opponents though how long that will last if liberals keep changing the rules is unknown. She then apologized and then unapologized at a press conference with Gloria Allreds lawyer daughter. Im not sure why Griffin needed a lawyer, unless she feels compelled to file a class action suit against normal people for malicious decency.

What was truly great was how this Hollywood fringe mediocritys idiocy brought the current manifestation of liberalism into such focus not just for us news junkies but for normal people. She gave us a great opportunity to say, Hey, this is what #TheResistance is all about. These are the people who want to turn your culture into a cesspool and then drown you in it.

And it worked that hackneyed crone has caused liberalism more damage than a thousand unread scold-tomes by Ben Sasse, who is always willing to instruct fellow conservatives on our moral inadequacy but who cant even man-up enough to tell that witless creep Bill Maher that the N-word is un-Judeo/Christian and unAmerican.

But then arose the usual nasal whines of the usual wusscons about how responding to Griffins head games was beneath us and how we conservatives shouldnt stoop to their level by actually talking about what every single person in America is talking about.

Baloney. These wimps whimper and wail about our cultural decline and then, when presented with a golden opportunity to make our conservative case and run up the score, they go AWOL because they dont want to get their soft, girlish paws dirty by actually fighting for what they say they believe in. They are frauds and scammers. They were happy to sit in their donor-funded sinecures waving their fingers at liberalisms relentless march through our culture, but all of a sudden it turned out that we normals expected them to actually fight. And when that ginger geriatric cryptkeeper of a comic gave us a blood-soaked opportunity on a platter, they turned tail and ran rather than jam it down our enemies collective throat. Losers.

And as for not wanting someone persecuted for speaking her mind, or her mindless as the case may be, that is absolutely right as a principle and absolutely wrong as a tactic. We tried reason. We tried principle. And, as the enigmatic Ace of Spades observes, those tactics failed. So now, lets try pain.

Lets let them see and, more importantly, feel the consequences of the very rules they want to impose on us. Ill gladly sacrifice Kathy Griffins ability to be a talentless hack to save free speech by using the corpse of her already comatose career to teach liberals what the end game of their new rules looks like.

Hell, we better stop these liberal morons now, because things can get a lot worse if you want to see what a lot worse looks like, check out my new novel Indian Country. Heres a spoiler: its really violent and people get hurt right here in America. So if ceremonially disemboweling the careers of some Kathy Griffins or some Bill Mahers is what it takes to start getting liberal heads right and get us back to something like normal, count me in.

David Khan selected as leader of the Alberta Liberal Party – CTV News

Posted: at 7:54 am

The Alberta Liberal Party has spoken and a Calgary-based attorney will be at the helm as the party prepares for the 2019 provincial election.

On Sunday, party members gathered in Calgary and selected lawyer David Khan as leader by a narrow margin over his lone opponent, Kerry Cundal.

Im so excited about the energy in this room, said Khan following his victory. Theres so many liberals, old and new, that are of our party now and Im really excited about moving liberalism forward in Alberta.

Im focused on rebuilding this party, reenergizing it, running candidates in 87 constituencies, being a real force in the next provincial election and were gonna win a bunch of seats.

Khan, who will replace the partys interim leader David Swann, says he is not concerned by a possible united right in Alberta.

Whatever comes out of the unite the right movement, Ill be ready to counter them with fairness for future generations, for equality of opportunity, personal freedoms, fiscal and economic prudence and social progressiveness, said Khan. Well be there ready to go.

The leader of the Alberta Liberal Party says the liberal values of Albertans have surfaced in recent elections and he expects that trend to continue.

We elected two liberal MPs here in Calgary, Kent Hehr and Darshan Kang, weve got two more in Alberta and were going to elect a lot more liberals federally and provincially.

Politics are volatile and I could be the next premier.

The party was victorious in only one riding in the 2015 provincial election as David Swann, the outgoing leader, was elected to represent Calgary-Mountain View. Khan was the Liberal candidate for Calgary-Buffalo in 2015 but finished third behing the NDP and PC candidates.

London Bridge is the heart of a liberal, tolerant and welcoming city – The Independent

Posted: at 7:54 am

A few minutes walk from the scene of Saturday's appalling attack stands Cathedral Primary School, a Church of England establishment that demonstrates the diversity and inclusivity of London SE1, and cares for children of all colours and creeds.

The area on the south side of London Bridge is a part of the capital that everyone shares. For around a millennium, Southwark Cathedral and Borough Market have looked after the spiritual and secular needs of this densely populated residential area which has been enriched by waves of new arrivals.

Yet in the past two decades, the Borough area has transformed from a dormant, relatively obscure corner of the South Bank to a vibrant neighbourhood packed with bars, restaurants and tourist attractions.

Businesses have moved in, and now jostle for space with hotels built since the turn of the century. They aretaking advantage of the proximity to the City and an increasing number of tourist sights, with Shakespeares Globe Theatre and the Shard changing the skyline and drawing the crowds.

The riverside walkway has a constant flow of locals and visitors. Borough Market straggling beneath the railway arches draws thousands of shoppers and tourists at weekends, and in the evening transforms an entertainment hub.

People congregate here to celebrate life at the heart of a liberal, tolerant and welcoming city. As with Westminster Bridge and Manchester, they present a soft target for murderers united only by their contempt for humanity. But this act of pure hatred will only strengthen the unity of the people of SE1 and the millions they welcome.
