Harrowing film tells of Las Vegas shooting and its aftermath
Posted: September 29, 2022 at 1:11 am
NEW YORK (AP) A pair of cowboy boots that Ashley Hoff never thought she would see again helped unlock a powerful story about the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history.
The resulting film, 11 Minutes, is an inside account of the 2017 massacre at a country music festival in Las Vegas and, more importantly, about how it reverberated in the lives of those who were there. More than three hours long, the four-part documentary debuts Tuesday on the Paramount+ streaming service.
Ive never felt more useful or more like the universe put me exactly where I was supposed to be, said Hoff, an executive producer of 11 Minutes.
It seems like a strange sentiment given that Hoff was at the show on Oct. 1, 2017, four rows from the stage as Jason Aldean sang Any Ol Barstool. Hoff heard popping sounds that she and her husband, Shaun, first dismissed as fireworks not the work of a gunman firing from a nearby hotel window.
She turned to look at her husband and saw someone just behind him struck in the face by a bullet. They alternated ducking to the ground for cover and running away, depending on when they could hear the gunshots.
At one point, she kicked off her cowboy boots because it was too slippery to run in them, eventually escaping the killing field where 58 people died that night, and two more later of their injuries. More than 850 people were hurt before the gunfire stopped.
Nine months later, an FBI agent was at Hoffs door with her boots part of a little-known unit that returns property left behind by people caught in these incidents.
Hoff, already in the film business, thought that made an intriguing subject. She was encouraged to broaden her focus through her experience with fellow survivors and the involvement of director Jeff Zimbalist and veteran producers Susan Zirinsky and Terence Wrong.
Many survivors, like herself, were unhappy with media coverage of the massacre, believing there was too much focus on the gunman and that it was forgotten too soon.
We all went back to our corners to suffer in silence, she said.
The film takes you vividly inside the event with cellphone and police body-cam footage. The cooperation of Las Vegas police was key, bringing footage like the race to hospitals with survivors and the moment when a tactical unit burst into the casino hotel room where the gunman had barricaded himself.
The experiences of people like Jonathan Smith, a Black concertgoer who had felt unwelcome because of a white mans remark wondering why he was there, and Natalie Grumet, who had just survived cancer, are weaved throughout the story. Both were seriously injured.
Is it easy to watch? No, but it shouldnt be easy to watch, said SiriusXM host Storme Warren, who was onstage in Las Vegas that night. I dont know why you would tell the story if it were easy to watch.
Warren at first hesitated when asked to participate in the film, dealing with his own PTSD and wary because of past media coverage. He and Aldean, who gave his first interview about Las Vegas to filmmakers, are important ties to the country community.
Hoff believes that her own experience that night, even though it is not included in the film, helped convince some of those involved to talk.
Searingly, the parents of Carrie Parsons, a young woman who didnt survive her wounds, discuss dealing with every parents worst nightmare, and how their time to grieve with her body was cut short.
Theyre going to cremate my daughter in 10 minutes, a tearful Ann-Marie Parsons recalled being told. How do you deal with that?
After the shooting stopped, police talked of hearing the rings of cellphones as they walked among bodies still on the concert grounds, knowing there were desperate callers on the other end wanting to know if their loved ones were safe.
Beyond the concertgoers, its startling to see some of the first responders often not the most emotive types speak about how theyve dealt with the emotional aftermath. I was a very angry man. Very angry, said Brian Rogers, paramedic operations chief, in the film.
Part four of 11 Minutes, begins at dawn on Oct. 2, 2017, and focuses on some of the enduring bonds between survivors, and some of the rescuers.
Its Hoffs favorite part. I do like to encourage people that there is goodness in the end, so hang in for that, she said.
There are extraordinary acts of courage and human beings helping human beings, said Zirinsky, chief of the See It Now Studios production company. Theyre just regular people. In the darkest hours, people found each other.
Zirinsky, the former CBS News president, produced 9/11, perhaps the most memorable doc made in the wake of that disaster, and considers 11 Minutes the most powerful film shes worked on since.
While the film talks about the gunman, whose motive remains a mystery since he killed himself before police reached him, it pointedly does not mention his name. Almost militantly so: A series of audio news reports included are cut off just before the name is spoken.
It was found that the gunman had searched the internet for how to be a social media star in the days before the shooting. Even in death, Hoff doesnt want to give him that wish.
The film ends with a slow crawl showing the names of those killed five years ago in Las Vegas, as well as the victims of every mass shooting since that time in the U.S. where at least four people were killed.
I dont call it a political statement, Zirinsky said. I call it a statement of reality.
Both Hoff and her husband escaped the concert without any gunshot wounds, although Hoff broke her arm when she slipped and fell trying to run in her cowboy boots. She didnt notice her injury until they stopped running.
Shes fine if people take the message from her film that enoughs enough.
We need to stop turning away, and we need to understand what going through this was like, she said. It changes a person forever.

Grasshoppers in Las Vegas; the good, the bad, the weird – KLAS – 8 News Now
Posted: at 1:11 am
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) With recent grasshopper sightings in the Las Vegas valley, many locals are concerned there may be a repeat of 2019. Grasshoppers swarming high-traffic areas, blotting out streetlights, and causing general unease to those fearful of bugs.
However, experts arent convinced that a repeat of the 2019 invasion is on the horizon.
There may be a burst from the heavy monsoon rains a month ago, said Professor Allen Gibbs of UNLVs Department of Life Sciences, but I do not expect millions to appear on the Strip like they did in 2019.
That outbreak, Gibbs said, was most likely caused by heavy spring rains, then lots of plant growth. But, beyond plant growth, theres something else in Las Vegas that attracts bugs by the thousands. Light.
Grasshoppers, and insects more generally, are attracted to light, particularly ultraviolet light, according to Jeff Knight, state entomologist for the Nevada Department of Agriculture. This is why Las Vegas, the brightest place on earth, is so enticing to hoards of grasshoppers.
One tip Knight gives to those fearful of swarms surrounding their homes is to replace their lights. If you change the light to one that produces less ultraviolet, then the grasshoppers wont be attracted to it, Knight said.
Thousands of grasshoppers encircling a brightly lit ultraviolet light may give some people the heebie-jeebies, but is there any real danger present? Knight says no. Theres nothing theyre really going to do to people other than be scary.
The grasshoppers responsible for the 2019 takeover are not considered pests. They dont carry diseases, they dont bite, nor do they severely damage crops, all things Knight says define pests. Theyre a pest only because theyre in big numbers, not because theyre doing anything.
Knight says that Nevada has 103 species of grasshoppers, and only nine are considered pests. But the particular species that took over the valley in 2019, as noted, are not considered such.
The pallid-winged grasshopper is what took over the Las Vegas strip in 2019. It is a common species native to the deserts of western North America.
A common misconception is that locusts were the insects swarming the valley, however, all grasshoppers are locusts, but not all locusts are grasshoppers, according to Knight.
He said locusts are grasshoppers that have undergone morphological changes, commonly resulting in bigger, longer wings. Locusts are basically a few species of grasshopper that can form swarms when they are overcrowded and start running out of food, noted Gibbs.
Gibbs said the classic examples are in Africa, where they can wipe out crops over large areas.
Gibbs also mentioned that many of the current sounds and sightings may not even be grasshoppers, but rather, crickets. From online reports and personal conversations about chirping, I think a lot of the recent buzz is about crickets, Gibbs said. Grasshoppers are pretty quiet, except for a buzzing sound when flying.
While thousands of bugs crowding lights and peoples homes may be frightening, its not all bad.
For many birds, lizards, coyotes, and other animals, these insects are a valuable food source. Knight also notes that grasshoppers can be valuable sources of nutrient recycling. A process in which the bugs eat plant material that can ultimately be used by plants again.
Knight says its no different than using manure or compost on plants. So, despite the small size of these insects, their contribution to plant life is considerable, especially when taking into account the sheer number of them.
While many locals have already reported seeing swarms of grasshoppers, its nothing close to what happened three years ago.
Knight says around this time of the year, the adults are dying off, but have laid their eggs. The eggs usually hatch in spring. So, whether well see a repeat in 2023 has yet to be determined.

City of Las Vegas loses third case in battle over Badlands – KTNV 13 Action News Las Vegas
Posted: at 1:11 am
LAS VEGAS (KTNV)The City of Las Vegas struck out in court for the third time today, taking yet another hit in the ongoing battle over the defunct Badlands golf course that already has taxpayers on the hook for more than $50 million.
Developer Yohan Lowie filed four lawsuits against the city for illegally taking his land and preventing him from developing homes and condos on the 250-acre property he owns.
Today's ruling involves 17 acres at the corner of Rampart Blvd. and Alta Dr. where the city had previously granted entitlements for 435 units.
Judge David Jones ruled it to be an illegal taking after the city put up roadblocks, effectively preventing development of the planned condominiums.
Jones is the third judge who has considered Badlands parcels and ruled against the city.
POSSIBLE SETTLEMENT IN DEFUNCT BADLANDS GOLF COURSE CASE FALLS APART
There's one lawsuit still with an illegal taking claim still pending on the remaining 133 acres.
In the two previous cases the city lost, one is on appeal before the Nevada Supreme Court and the other is awaiting an assessment of monetary damages.
This comes as the city is poised to ask the council to approve up to another $2 million to pay outsourced lawyers. That's on the council agenda for Oct. 19.
In early August, the city had the opportunity to resolve all the Badlands cases but the settlement was struck from the council's agenda at the eleventh hour.
The city claimed negotiations between attorneys broke down.
The developer said the city attempted to change the terms, which gutted the agreement.

Las Vegas dolphin attraction closed after third mammal death – The Guardian US
Posted: at 1:11 am
A dolphin habitat at a hotel on the Las Vegas Strip has been temporarily closed after the third mammal death at the attraction in five months.
Officials at the Mirage Secret Garden and Habitat said an 11-year-old bottlenose dolphin named K2 died on Saturday.
The cause of death remains unclear, but officials told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that the mammal had been receiving treatment for a respiratory illness.
They say Maverick, a 19-year-old bottlenose dolphin, died on 2 September following treatment for a lung infection while 13-year-old Bella died in April after undergoing treatment for gastroenteritis.
According to the international organization Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums website, a bottlenose dolphins life expectancy is about 28 to 29 years.
Franz Kallao, the interim president of Mirage, said officials were working closely with veterinary and pathology experts to determine the cause of death for K2, who was born at the Secret Garden.
We are also working with additional outside veterinary, water quality, behavioral, animal welfare and environmental experts to help us conduct a thorough review and inspection of both the animals and the facility, Kallao added.
In February 2019, four remaining bottlenose dolphins at a Phoenix-area aquatic facility were moved to a new home in the Caribbean after four deaths at Dolphinaris Arizona since its 2016 opening.

PARTY: THE GLITCH MOB From the day The Glitch Mob released debut album Drink the Sea back in the summer of 2010, the sound of the LA-based electronic triostill Boreta (Justin Boreta), edit (Edward Ma) and Ooah (Josh Mayer)has been a tough one to pin down. Their bass sound nods toward dubstep, but they never fully engage with the wob-wob-wob cliches of that form, keeping only its insane lower end rumble. Their name obviously includes the word glitch, but compared to some of their contemporaries Pretty Lights, say, or Nobukazu Takemurathey dont lean too far into glitch either. And though their hard rock-like intensity could place them in the industrial realm, their stuff is too pretty for the rivetheads. (And the issue is further confused by their latest single The Flavor, which is an early-90s-era techno throwback that Messiah, Moby or The Prodigy would be proud to claim.) Suffice to say, The Glitch Mobs sound is hard-driving and melodic, and its gonna move you one way or anothereither physically, or toward nostalgia for old-school techno. Maybe both at once. City of Las Vegas water crisis averted with new treatment system – KRQE News 13
Posted: at 1:11 am
LAS VEGAS, N.M.(KRQE) The city of Las Vegass water supply has been improving following months of a water crisis. The city began facing the crisis in August when officials announced that there were 40 days of clean drinking water left.
After the largest fire in the states history, intense monsoon rains caused debris and ash to run into the Gallinas river. The city was set to run out of clean drinking water but now a pre-treatment system is providing some relief. We have a temporary pretreatment system installed at the base of Storrie Dam. Where we are removing the ash and sediment from the water, pumping the water back up to Peterson and Bradner and treating it again in the drinking water plant, said Jay Lazarus, Hydrogeologist, Glorieta GL Science.
Drinking water is finally being produced, filtering out the debris from the Gallinas River and Storrie Lake. As the monsoons have waned recently, the water in the river has cleaned up to pre-fire levels, said Lazarus.
Currently, the temporary water filtration system produces 1.4 million gallons of clean water a day but again its only a temporary fix. The city is in the works of bringing in a more permanent structure further upstream that will produce more water. That system could help provide clean water for everyone in Las Vegas and its surrounding neighbors. Im thinking that Las Vegas will become the water technology center of New Mexico once everything is done, said Las Vegas Mayor Louie Trujillo.
The city has applied for more than $100 million dollars in state and federal funding for the permanent water shed treatment facility.

Las Vegas parolee accused of committing series of burglaries with stolen car – KLAS – 8 News Now

Suspect allegedly stole thousands of dollars, shoes, and candy
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) A Las Vegas man is accused of violating his parole, breaking into several valley businesses with crowbars, and stealing money and other items.
Michael Workman, 39, is facing three counts of attempted burglary of a business and five counts of burglary of a business.
Workman had allegedly committed the burglaries in a similar way each time, wearing certain clothing and driving a stolen vehicle.
On an unknown date, Workman broke into a business in the 4700 block of Rancho Drive at around 3:30 a.m. and stole an empty toolbox, a cash register, $25, a computer, and work boots, according to his arrest report.
On Wednesday, Aug. 10, Workman went to a gas station in the 2400 block of Jones Blvd. and tried to use the crowbar to break into a car wash coin machine but was unsuccessful, the report said.
On Thursday, Aug. 11, Workman broke into a business in the 6400 block of Lake Mead Blvd. and stole candy, water, and detergent pods after checking the registers and finding they were empty, the report said.
On Monday, Aug. 22, Workman tried to break into a business in the 4000 block of Spring Mountain Road at around 5 a.m. but wasnt able to open the doors, the report said. Police said he caused thousands of dollars of damage to the doors.
On Tuesday, Aug. 23, Workman tried to break into a business in the 2200 block of Rainbow Blvd. just before 2:40 a.m. but failed and left, according to the report. He then allegedly returned at around 3:15 a.m. and tried to break in again using what appeared to be a crowbar, but failed again.
On Saturday, Aug. 27, Workman broke into a business in the 1700 block of Buffalo Drive by using three different crowbars to pry open the front door, the report said. He allegedly stole a cash register containing roughly $2,000 to $4,000, a tip jar containing roughly $250, several ceramic water jug vases, and a speaker.
On Saturday, Sept. 3, Workman broke into a business in the 6500 block of Buffalo Drive at around 12:30 a.m. with what seemed to be a yellow crowbar, the report said. A person reporting the burglary later said he stole a coin tray with roughly $200 in it.
Later that morning on Sept. 3, Workman allegedly broke into a business in the 8400 block of Lake Mead Blvd just after 2 a.m. with what police described as a yellow steel tool used to pry open the door. He walked past cash registers and valuable items on the front desk and went toward the back cabinets before walking out with nothing, according to the report. Nothing was reported as stolen from the business.
On Friday, Sept. 23, Las Vegas Metropolitan police officers responded to reports of a parole violation and checked in on Workman, who they said was living in a shed in the back of his grandmothers house.
Officers found that a white Nissan in his driveway, similar to a vehicle used in the burglaries, also had a stolen license plate.
Workman was initially arrested on a charge of violating his probation. Police then executed a search warrant of the home and found several crowbars and clothes that matched those worn by the burglary suspect in different surveillance videos.
After this, he was charged with several counts of burglary and attempted burglary. He was being held at the Clark County Detention Center Wednesday.

Raiders Have Never Started 0-3 and Made Playoffs – Sports Illustrated
Posted: at 1:11 am
The Las Vegas Raiders are the only team in the National Football League with an 0-3 record, but incredibly, had one play in any of those games gone the other way, the Silver and Black actually could be 3-0.
The Raiders, after a promising 4-0 preseason record under new Coach Josh McDaniels, rallied in the second half only to fall short of the Los Angeles Chargers, 24-19, at Sofi Stadium in the opener in Inglewood Calif., before building a 20-0 lead over the Arizona Cardinals before losing, 29-23, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, and last Sunday rallied in the second half only to fall to the Tennessee Titans, 24-22, at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tenn.
Like most close games are, theres a handful of plays that that they made and we didnt that would sway the outcome, and unfortunately thats three weeks in a row, Coach Josh McDaniels of the Raiders said.
Im looking for us to try to improve and play a full 60-minute game, where we actually start well, play well in all three phases, lets see what that looks like. Im not sure that weve done that yet.
Added defensive Maxx Crosby: Its tough. Were so close. Were doing a lot of good things, were just not finishing and getting the wins. On the outside its frustrating and I get it. Its frustrating in (the locker room). ... Even though its hard right now and seems like the world is closing down, we have a lot of positive things to take away.
In all of their comments about being winless, the Raiders and their coaches have been reluctant to utter the phrase oh-and-three.
The Raiders are 0-3 for the first time since 2018, and since 1979, six NFL teams have started 0-3 and made the playoffs, the last one being the Houston Texans, which started 0-3 in 2018 but rebounded to win their next nine games and made the playoffs at 11-5 before losing to the Indianapolis Colts, 21-7, in an AFC Wild Card Game.
This is the 10th time in the 63-year history of the Silver and Black that they have not won in their first three games, and in only one of those seasons did they bounce back and make it to the postseason. And that season, they were winless in the first three games but did not start 0-3.
The 1970 Raiders, led by Hall of Fame Coach John Madden, started the season at 0-2-1, but then went 6-0-1 in the next seven games and wound up winning the AFC West with an 8-4-2 record. Then the Silver and Black beat the Miami Dolphins, 21-14, in an AFC Divisional Playoff Game at the Oakland Coliseum before losing to the Baltimore Colts, 27-17, in the AFC Championship Game at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore.

That was the season kicker-quarterback George Blanda won five straight games for the Raiders with his leg and his arm, but even though he threw two touchdown passes and kicked a 48-yard field goal, Blanda couldnt get the Silver and Black past great quarterback Johnny Unitas and the Colts.
The best the Raiders did after starting 0-3 came in 1986 when they won eight of their next nine games to make a run for the playoffs led by another Hall of Fame Coach, Tom Flores. However, they lost their last four games to finish 8-8 and missed the playoffs by finishing last in the AFC West.
Of course, Raider Nation doesnt want to think about 1962, when the Silver and Black started 0-13 before winning their last game; 1964, when they started 0-5 and wound up 5-7-2; 1992, when they were 0-4 before finishing 7-9; 2006, when they were 0-5 before winding up at 2-14, or 2014, when went 0-10 before ending up at 3-13.
The last time the Raiders started 0-3 was 2018, when they lost five more in a row after gaining their first victory and won three of their last six games to finish 4-12 in the first season of Coach Jon Grudens second stint with the franchise.
The Silver and Black can halt all this talk, at least for one week, by beating the AFC West rival Denver Broncos on Sunday at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
The Las Vegas Raiders return to action next Sunday, as they play host at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas to their AFC rivals the Denver Broncos. That game kicks off at 4:25 PM PDT and can be seen on CBS.
