Can you hear that? It’s live music, scheduled to return to Las Vegas this year – Lasvegasmagazine

Posted: at 4:04 am

This year just keeps getting better and better. Las Vegas is hosting larger crowds every week, and come June 1 the city is expected to reopen 100%. That means all the venues, restaurants and experiences youve come to know and love as part of the Vegas experience are likely to return as well, and that includes live music, one of the last holdouts of the pandemic shutdown. We dont know about any of you, but live music is one of the things we miss the mosttheres just no substitute for being in a huge gathering and enjoying one of your favorite musical artists play your favorite songs. Heres a list of the artists and events were most looking forward to again.

Life is Beautiful (Downtown Las Vegas) This festival had to take a break last year, but its returning this year stronger than everin fact, this may be the festivals strongest lineup yet. In addition to of-the-moment-hot acts like Billie Eilish, Megan Thee Stallion and Tame Impala, this years downtown festival from Sept. 17-19 includes audience favorites like Modest Mouse, Haim, ASAP Rocky and Ludacrisand thats just scraping the surface. It might be hard to snag a ticket for this one, but oh boy, will it be worth it.

Barry Manilow (Westgate Las Vegas) His residency was one of the funnest tickets in town, and will likely remain so when he resumes performing on Sept. 16. Its not just his ridiculous number of unforgettable, singable hits like Mandy and Cant Smile Without You. Its the energy, charm and good humor he brings to every performance.

Donny Osmond (Harrahs) Osmond, who performed here for years with his sister in a hit residency at Flamingo, had planned on beginning his own residency here in 2020. Best laid plans But hell be back as of Aug. 31, and odds are his fans are already buying their tickets as we speak. He really is the ultimate Vegas acthe sings, he dances, and he appeals to all age groups. Oh, and hes really, REALLY funny!

Chicago (The Venetian) For years, this legendary ensemble made sure to include Vegas on its nationwide schedule, and Chicago returns to the Venetian Theatre on Sept. 15. Some music truly never ages, and we cant wait to hear Saturday in the Park and 25 or 6 to 4 once again.

Usher (Caesars Palace) One thing you can count on when live entertainment fully returns: There will always be a high-powered act performing at the Colosseum. Its been home to residencies by Celine Dion, Elton John, Mariah Carey and more, and come July 16, the A-list continues with arrival of Ushers residency. From his hit albums to his dancing skills to his judging stints on The Voice, Usher is the complete package, and we have little doubt hell pack the House That Celine Built.

Billy Idol (The Cosmopolitan) Sometimes its as much about the attitude as it is about the music itself. Idol has endeared himself to Vegas audiences over the years with successful mini-residencies at the House of Blues, and hell begin a new Vegas chapter on Oct. 16 when he begins a series of dates at The Chelsea. We cant wait to chant More, more, more!

Morrissey (Caesars Palace) Like most of you, were huge fans of both The Smiths and frontman Morrisseys solo careerhis legendary catalog can be heard practically everywhere these days, from commercials to movie soundtracks. Hes planning on multiple dates at The Colosseum starting on Aug. 28, and we plan on being front and center when he croons Every Day is Like Sunday.

Michael Bubl (T-Mobile Arena) If youve not yet seen a live show at the magnificent T-Mobile Arena, you are really missing out. It allows for some spectacular experiences, not to mention some of the best acoustics to be found on the Las Vegas Strip. And if theres ever a performer who suited Vegas better, its crooner Bubl, who is sure to pack the house on Sept. 24.

ZZ Top (The Venetian) As youd expect from their legendary videos, ZZ Top delivers a perfectly calibrated show. There are few acts that get audiences in a better party mood than the band that created Legs, Sharp Dressed Man and Tush. Their Las Vegas runs were extremely successful, and theyll continue that streak when they return to the Venetian Theatre on Oct. 8.

Enrique Iglesias (MGM Grand) There are no-brainer Las Vegas acts and then theres Enrique Iglesias. Hes traditionally made a Sin City appearance every Mexican Independence Day for the last several years, and every single year hes sold out. Its not hard to wonder whyhes one of the most successful acts in Latin pop in history. When he returns Sept. 25 to the MGM Garden Arena, expect the usual fireworksand maybe a few additional ones, since hes been away so long.

Bruno Mars (Park MGM) For those who doubt hes the hottest act at the moment, consider this: When Mars announced he would be performing six dates in Las Vegas at the Park Theater starting July 3, his shows sold out in minutes. For those of you who didnt snag tickets, heres hoping that Mars adds more dates when hes able. And weve still got our fingers crossed for aresidency

Carlos Santana (House of Blues) For years, Santana had one of the best residencies in Las Vegas at Mandalay Bay, and hes finally returning on Aug. 25. If you havent yet seen this show, shame on you! Its not every day you get to see one of the best guitarists in rock history scroll through his greatest hits, from Evil Ways and Oye Como Va to Smooth. Got goose bumps yet?

Styx (The Venetian) This legendary band had to add a third Las Vegas date to meet demand. Its not hard to see whythey really bring it when they perform. Oh, and they also bring a set list with four decades of unforgettable hits, including Come Sail Away, Blue Collar Man, Crystal Ball and so many others. Be sure to try to catch them when they arrive on Sept. 25.

Get ready for a roller coaster of weekend weather in Las Vegas – KTNV Las Vegas

Posted: at 4:04 am

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) The heat was the main weather headline to close the workweek, but our attention turns to the wind this weekend as an area of low-pressure swings in with a weather shakeup.

Highs landed in the upper 90s both Thursday and Friday, about 10 above the seasonal average, but the temperature trend moves the other direction this weekend.

CURRENT CONDITIONS | 13 First Alert Weather

Gust speeds pick up to 35 mph are expected on Saturday as a storm system moves in, prompting a Red Flag Warning across southern Nevada from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. with the dry and gusty conditions elevating fire danger.

Highs fall from the upper 90s on Friday, to the low to mid-90s on Saturday then all the way down to the low 80s on Sunday. Average highs for this time of year are near 89.

A slight uptick in upper-level moisture is expected on Sunday as a few more clouds mix in, adding a 10% chance for rain favoring the mountains. Gust speeds relax to 25 mph on Sunday and 20 mph early next week.

THINGS TO DO | 13 Things To Do This Week In Las Vegas For May 14-20, 2021

The roller coaster doesn't end this weekend, the weather pattern indicates a heat up heading into the middle of next week as highs climb back to the mid-90s before the next round of mid-80s returns by the end of next week.

The average first occurrence of triple-digit heat in Las Vegas is May 26 and we've only made it to 98 so far this year.

Arson arrest made in LA wildfire that forced evacuations – Las Vegas Sun

Posted: at 4:04 am

Published Monday, May 17, 2021 | 6:28 p.m.

Updated Monday, May 17, 2021 | 6:28 p.m.

LOS ANGELES (AP) An arson suspect was arrested in connection with a Los Angeles wildfire that forced evacuations in canyons where thick vegetation hasn't burned in more than 60 years, authorities said Monday.

The man detained Sunday near the fire zone was being treated for smoke inhalation, said Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Ralph Terrazas. He did not identify the suspect or offer details about the investigation.

We feel we have the right person, Terrazas said at a news conference.

The wildfire near Topanga State Park was 23% contained by Monday evening. Despite burning in trees and heavy brush, its growth was slowed with the aid of cool, moist weather and its size remained at about 2 square miles (5.4 square kilometers), authorities said.

Air tankers battled the blaze after being unable to fly in the morning because of cloud cover.

No buildings were damaged and no injuries reported in the blaze that broke out late Friday in the Santa Monica Mountains. It grew rapidly Saturday forcing about 1,000 Topanga Canyon area residents to flee their homes.

Evacuation orders were lifted Monday evening.

An explosive wildfire so early in the year, especially in cool conditions with almost no wind, portends a difficult fire season ahead in a state that has seen very little rainfall, officials said.

We really have to think about brush fires as a year-long challenge, Terrazas said.

The cause of the fire in steep, inaccessible terrain had been deemed suspicious after officials noticed two ignition points about an hour apart, the Fire Department said.

Arson investigators detained and released one person on Saturday and another person was questioned and then arrested on Sunday, the department said.

Topanga Canyon is a remote, wooded community with some ranch homes bordering Malibu, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) west of downtown Los Angeles.

Las Vegas tourism exploding with more and more people flying to and from the city – KTNV Las Vegas

Posted: May 11, 2021 at 10:57 pm

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) The lines are out the door for people looking to fly out of McCarran International Airport. No more are the pandemic times of arriving 40 minutes before your flight and zipping through to your gate.

The airport is encouraging people to get to the airport well before their flight.

McCarran spokesperson Joe Rajchel tells us, "We just recently released our March passenger numbers and saw almost a million passenger increase over February. We expect to see that trend to continue as we head into the summer months."

RELATED: Passengers report long wait times for rideshares at McCarran Airport

The airport is still in cost-containment mode with consolidated operations. They want people to know what to expect when they get here and be prepared.

Kristina is from Dallas and is coming to Las Vegas for the first time. "It was pretty backed up coming in and it was a little confusing getting on the train to come to baggage claim but its all new and interesting," said Kristina.

McCarran has seen a trend of more people choosing to drive themselves. T1 economy lot has reopened and the shuttle is operating. T3 E gates are still closed, which are mainly international.

"Were seeing an increase and we are still not at 100% so that means youre going to have to wait a little bit longer for check-in or for concessions. Even if you are dropping off a rental car, shuttle buses have a little bit more of a wait time. We really encourage people to give themselves plenty of time," says Rajchel.

Not only do they want people to be prepared when arriving at McCarran, but they also stress knowing the procedures at their destination.

A group from Minnesota traveling to Las Vegas for the first time said, "The plane was totally full. Getting on the blue line too was super full, but was pretty quick. We think everybody is vaccinated or close to."

Nevadas biggest air carrier, Southwest Airlines, says that they have seen a significant rebound after losing 97% of air traffic.

Red Rock Resorts ready to break ground on $350 million California casino – Las Vegas Sun

Posted: at 10:57 pm

By Thaddeus Miller, The Fresno Bee (TNS)

Tuesday, May 11, 2021 | 2:31 p.m.

The Las Vegas company behind bringing a new Native American casino to Madera County is close to breaking ground, according to a high-ranking official close to the project.

The California State Supreme Court cleared the way in September for Las Vegas-based Red Rock Resorts to build North Fork Rancheria's casino off of Highway 99 near Avenue 18 just north of Madera, less than 40 miles east of the Chukchansi Gold Resort & Casino and Table Mountain Casino.

The new casino could take about 18 months to finish once crews break ground, which is expected by the end of June, according to Stephen Cootey, chief financial officer for Red Rock, parent company of Station Casinos.

"As of now, the budget for the full completion of this project excluding any financing costs is expected to be between $350 million and $400 million," Cootey said May 4 in a call with investors.

He went on to say the project is expected to cover 213,000 square feet, including 100,000 square feet in casino space, plus 2,000 slots and 40 table games. There will also be two restaurants and a food hall.

Officials with the North Fork Rancheria, home to the Mono Indians, said more on the new casino may be available in the coming month or so but declined to discuss it on Monday, according to Charles Altekruse, spokesman for the North Fork Mono.

Economic impact

The success of new hospitality destinations in an area not already known to draw a large amount of tourists can be hard to predict, according to economist Jeffrey Michael from the University of the Pacific in Stockton.

"That's the tricky thing with a lot of hospitality, drawing new visitors or just diverting dollars from others nearby," he said.

But, Madera County officials are more confident of the long-term success of the new casino that's taken nearly two decades to clear legal hurdles.

Chukchansi and Valley Children's are the county's top two private employers, so a new casino is a welcome addition, according to Bobby Kahn, the executive director of the Madera County Economic Development Commission.

"It's going to be a huge job creator," Kahn said. "In some point in time, they'll be employing somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,500 or 1,700 people."

Kahn said casino jobs tend to pay well, offer benefits and include a "career ladder" of positions from maintenance workers up to accountants and lawyers. Then there are the construction jobs as the casino goes up.

The litigation has altered the plans, Kahn said. Rather than all going up at once, the hotel is on schedule to be built a couple of years or so after the casino.

While Native American nations on sovereign land are not subject to taxes, the Mono Indians have entered into a number of local deals with Madera, Chowchilla and Madera County to help pay for roads and public safety, among other expenses, according to Kahn.

Madera's casinos do draw tour buses of people from out of the area looking to play slots and table games, Kahn said. He added that the new casino will likely be a hot commodity when it's first built, but shouldn't be a long-term damper on other tourist attractions in the area.

"I think it will have some affect, naturally," he said. "I think in the long-run it will all level out."

The North Fork Rancheria of Mono Indians is a federally recognized Native American nation with more than 2,200 tribal citizens and government offices in Madera County.
