'CSI: Vegas' premieres 20 years after original CBS hit
by: David Charns
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) In the fictional world of CSI: Vegas, Maxine Roby leads a team of crime scene investigators in her high-tech lab off the Las Vegas Strip. In real life, the job is anything but glamorous.
I really wish we could solve crime in 60 minutes, Kimberly Murga, Las Vegas Metropolitan polices director of laboratory services, said.
Two women split Robys fictional job. Murgas forensics laboratory and Kristin Grammas Crime Scene Investigations unit work together to solve some of the valleys worst crimes.
While the CSI world shows the crime scene analysts and forensic scientists working side-by-side, in reality, they work in two separate buildings in a nondescript office park near South Jones Boulevard and the 215.
Its nothing like the show, Grammas, the director of Metros CSI unit, said. Theres is all fancy and they have glass offices and cool lighting. Ours is fluorescent lightbulbs so its not as cool, but we still have a lot of the cool technologies that they have on the show.
What we do is exciting behind the scenes, but it takes time and its not resolved quickly, Murga said.
During real Metro police work, crime scene analysts will be dispatched to a scene a felony event such as a murder, assault or robbery. Teams will catalog what they find fingerprints, blood, hair, anything with a potential clue and then send it to the forensics lab for processing.
Characters on the CSI shows often do all those jobs; some even do it while directing the department.
Those responsibilities are not typically shared, but for all intents and purposes on the show, such as CSI, they have to consolidate that so they can get the crime evaluated and solved within their 60-minute limit, Murga said.
That is not reality, Grammas said. Both women added as directors their roles are now strictly administrative. Unlike, the fictional Roby, neither are actually going out to a scene or testing evidence.
Grammas team collects the pieces of the puzzle that Murgas scientists hope to then unlock.
In the decades since the original CSI premiered in 2000, a lot has changed.
One of the biggest changes is in DNA technology, Murga said. Testing a blood sample the size of a quarter used to take two months, she said. In 2021, her team can test an area the size of a pinhead and get results in a matter of hours.
In addition, the advent of DNA and print databases has added whole new ways to arrest criminals.
Hopefully us helping solve it for them or figure out what helps them helps them with the closure, so thats why, Grammas said.
Seeing not only that those crimes are solved, but also that justice is served, Murga said.
The I-Teams George Knapp will appear in several CSI: Vegas episodes this fall.
CSI: Vegas airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. on 8 News Now.

United Airlines adding flights from Cleveland Hopkins to Las Vegas, Phoenix this winter – cleveland.com
Posted: at 3:32 pm
CLEVELAND, Ohio United Airlines is restarting service from Cleveland Hopkins International Airport to Las Vegas and Phoenix, adding back two popular routes it flew during the carriers hub days.
Service on both routes is expected to be seasonal, starting in mid-December and running through late March.
The carrier last flew regularly scheduled service to Las Vegas in 2016, and Phoenix in 2014.
United will have some competition on both new routes. American and Frontier airlines both fly from Cleveland to Phoenix; Frontier and Spirit fly to Las Vegas. And Southwest Airlines flies weekends-only to both destinations.
With the additions along with new and continuing service to numerous destinations in Florida and the Caribbean United said it will be flying the most departures the airline has flown from Clevelands Hopkins International Airport since 2014, the year the carrier closed its hub here.
The carrier noted its ongoing service from Cleveland to four cities in Florida, plus weekly flights to Cancun. Last month, United announced new weekly, nonstop service from Cleveland to Nassau in the Bahamas.
The Cleveland news Thursday was part of a broader announcement from United that highlights its ongoing emphasis on domestic leisure routes as the coronavirus pandemic continues to depress demand for business travel.
The announcement also included new and resuming routes to Florida from Indianapolis, Pittsburgh, Columbus and Milwaukee, as well as flights to popular Western U.S. ski destinations.
According to United, the airline plans to offer more than 3,500 daily domestic flights in December, which represents 91% of its domestic capacity compared to 2019. The airline also said that holiday travel flight searches on united.com and the airlines app are up 16% compared to 2019.
Were seeing a lot of pent-up demand in our data and are offering a December schedule that centers on the two things people want most for the holidays: warm sunshine and fresh snow, said Ankit Gupta, vice president of network planning and scheduling at United. We know families and friends are eager to reunite this holiday season, which is why were thrilled to add new flights that will help them connect and celebrate together.
Details on the new United flights:
CLE to Phoenix
Starts: December 16
Departing CLE at 8 a.m., arriving Phoenix at 10:45 a.m.
Departing Phoenix at 11:40 a.m., arriving CLE at 5:25 p.m.
Aircraft: Boeing 737
CLE to Las Vegas
Starts: December 16
Departing CLE at 6:45 p.m., arriving LAS at 8:40 p.m.
Departing LAS at 11 p.m., arriving CLE at 6 a.m.
Aircraft: Boeing 737

Get used to roadwork on Las Vegas Boulevard – Las Vegas Weekly
Posted: at 3:32 pm
Thu, Oct 7, 2021 (2 a.m.)
Las Vegas Boulevard has long needed upgrades beyond simple repaving. Sidewalks need to be widened; outdated traffic signals and 50+ year-old underground utilities need replacement. Both Clark County and the City of Las Vegas are carrying out those improvements right now on a roughly four-mile stretch of the Boulevard, from Spring Mountain Road to Stewart Avenue. The new Las Vegas Boulevard will be a much easier, more attractive drivebut weve got some time until we get there.
The City is roughly halfway through a three-year upgrade of the Boulevard from Stewart to Sahara Avenue, explains construction project manager Cassandra Watson-Mihelcic. The mainline utilitiesstorm drain, water and seweris probably about 98% complete, Watson-Mihelcic says. The next phases of work include connecting those utilities to businesses, installing new streetlights and signals, landscaping and a full pavement replacement. The project is scheduled for full completion in April 2023, though some lanes of the Boulevard are already reopening.
The Spring Mountain-to-Sahara roadwork should be completed by the end of November, Clark County spokesperson Dan Kulin says. Remaining work includes the installation of fiber optic cables, fencing, landscaping, bollards and smart [lighting] poles. Its only the first of a seven-phase Strip improvement project, however, which will stretch as far south as the 215 Beltway, including water line replacement, upgrades to traffic signals, new pavement and more.
In short: If you know anyone whos planning to drive the length of the Strip for whatever reason, suggest that they hold off for a couple of years.
Experts in paleoanthropology believe that Geoff Carter began his career in journalism sometime in the early Grunge period, when he ...

Vegas pick’em: NFL Week 5 winners against the spread – Las Vegas Sun

ASSOCIATED PRESS
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray (1) applauses before an NFL football game against the Los Angeles Rams Sunday, Oct. 3, 2021, in Inglewood,Calif.
By Case Keefer (contact)
Thursday, Oct. 7, 2021 | 2 a.m.
The consensus coming into the season was that the NFC West would be the most competitive and fun division in the NFL, and yet few may have realized it would be quite to this level.
Through four weeks, all four NFC West teams have shown flashes of championship-caliber play. The Arizona Cardinals are the last undefeated team standing in the league. The Los Angeles Rams took down the defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The San Francisco 49ers opened the year with back-to-back road games on the East Coast and won both comfortably. The Seattle Seahawks have the NFLs second most efficient offense behind the Kansas City Chiefs.
And now, for the second straight week, all four of the divisional rivals are playing each other. To add to the intrigue, both NFC West underdogs won outright in Week 4 with the Cardinals downing the Rams 37-20 and the Seahawks edging the 49ers 28-21.
I hit on both games as part of a 9-7 record in last week's pickem, bringing the season total to 34-30 picking every game against the spread, and now Im going to back the underdogs for another week.
Read below to find out why along with picks on every Week 5 game. Picks are separated into three confidence categories and listed in rough order of confidence. Lines are the best currently available in Las Vegas on the chosen side.
Plays (13-11)
Philadelphia Eagles +4 at Carolina Panthers Snatch up the last few remaining 4s because thats tremendous value. Philadelphias offensive approach is quietly shrewd and bound to pay off before long, and Carolinas defense is beaten-up and no longer the same unit that shut down opponents in the first three weeks.
Baltimore Ravens -6.5 vs. Indianapolis Colts Having compiled a near 2 net yard per play advantage over its last two opponents, Baltimore appears to have navigated its early rash of injuries and gotten back to being its usual finely tuned machine. Its a minor miracle a couple shops have pulled this number down below the 7 because the spread belongs on the other side of a touchdown.
Seattle Seahawks +2.5 vs. Los Angeles Rams Its likely an unpopular opinion, but averaging a league-best 9.6 yards per pass attempt with nine touchdowns to no interceptions, Russell Wilson has been the NFLs best quarterback through the first month. Theres no opponent in the league that should be laying this many points on the road against a Wilson-led team.
San Francisco 49ers +5.5 at Arizona Cardinals This is the ultimate sell-high as Arizona is suddenly getting way too much credit for an undefeated start. San Francisco was a 1-point favorite in this game coming into the season, and regardless of whether its Trey Lance or Jimmy Garoppolo at quarterback, its easy to trust 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan to come up with a game plan to perplex Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury.
Leans (11-11)
Atlanta Falcons -3 vs. New York Jets in London The Falcons are reportedly set to arrive in Great Britain a day ahead of the Jets, which gives the team extra time to adjust their body clocks and has historically been a major advantage in these international games. Theyre also just the better team, as the Jets remain dead-last by both Football Outsiders DAVE ratings and expected points (EPA) added per play.
Houston Texans +9.5 vs. New England Patriots New Englands offense ranks 28th in the league in offensive EPA per play, making it hard to justify laying this many points. And while the Patriots defense has been as strong as expected ranking sixth by the same measure its a step down from the Bills and Panthers units that have completely shut down the Texans the last two weeks.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers -10 vs. Miami Dolphins The Buccaneers injury-ravaged secondary is a concern, but the Dolphins might not be the right team to take advantage of it behind short-throwing Jacoby Brissett. Miamis defense has regressed this season to potentially make this a get-right spot for Tom Brady and Co.
Jacksonville Jaguars +4.5 vs. Tennessee Titans Given all the clamor around the Jaguars and coach Urban Meyer, waiting and seeing if this number hits 6 before betting might be the right approach. By many advanced measures, including EPA, these teams have been pretty close to even on a per-play basis this season and the Titans come in with a significantly lengthier injury list.
Los Angeles Chargers -1.5 vs. Cleveland Browns The Browns defense has more than lived up to the hype, but Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert hasnt found trouble moving the ball against anyone. Traveling through three time zones to the West Coast for the first time in a season traditionally makes for a bigger home-field advantage, meaning the Chargers should be laying at least 2.5 points here.
Las Vegas Raiders -5.5 vs. Chicago Bears It feels way premature to declare the Bears offensive issues solved off of one decent performance against EPAs 31st-ranked Lions defense last week. The value has diminished since the line opened Raiders -4, but the home team should be laying 6 here.
Kansas City Chiefs -2.5 vs. Buffalo Bills Leaned Buffalo when the opening +3.5s were available, but now the line seems to have swung too far the other way. Kansas City -3 is a fair price, and even at that number, Im always going to prefer to take a great offensive team over a great defensive team.
Guesses (10-8)
Detroit Lions +9.5 at Minnesota Vikings Over 49 points might be the best way to play this game as both offenses are capable but there are more questions on both defenses. The number is just high enough to see Detroit potentially being able to squeeze in for a backdoor cover even if they spend most of the game down two scores.
Green Bay Packers -3 at Cincinnati Bengals Green Bays underlying statistical profile isnt nearly as impressive as its three straight wins and covers, so I understand wanting to sell high but the desire may have gone too far after this opened at a more fair -3.5. The Packers still have a somewhat sizable personnel advantage, as well as a coaching edge with Matt LaFleur over Zac Taylor.
Pittsburgh Steelers -1 vs. Denver Broncos This game is tough to handicap without knowing whether Denver quarterback Teddy Bridgewater will clear the concussion protocol in time to return. Without Bridgewater, these teams are more evenly matched than the market is currently implying.
New York Giants +7 at Dallas Cowboys Giants might have been a lean at +7.5, but the number has corrected and now sits in the right place. Still, this could be lower scoring than expected as a divisional game between familiar coaching staffs to make the points more valuable.
New Orleans Saints -1.5 at Washington Football Team With a massive number of injuries on both sides, this game between two already-inconsistent teams feels like the biggest stay-away of the week. Most of the sharpest books in the world have moved towards the Saints, which makes them the pick in what otherwise would be coin flip.

Where to find excellent food and brews in Las Vegas – Lasvegasmagazine
Posted: at 3:32 pm
In honor of the arrival of fallnot to mention this months return of the Downtown Brew Festival, set for Oct. 16 at the Clark County Amphitheaterit makes sense to turn our attention to Las Vegas restaurants serving some great beer food. Tis the season to soak up some suds, and it all starts at the legendary Hofbruhaus Las Vegas (702.853.2337) where every day is an Oktoberfest celebration. Now, in actual October, a variety of local celebrities and entertainers pop in every Friday and Saturday night to tap a new keg and keep the party going, which is pretty easy to do when you have giant mugs of cold beer and mouthwatering Bavarian specialties to munch on, like crispy pork shank with green cabbage and bacon salad, giant baked pretzels with onion mustard and breaded schnitzel with mushroom sauce.
You know what else goes great with an icy brew? Fried chicken, particularly the Southern variety, and thats the specialty at Yardbird Southern Table & Bar (702.297.6541) at The Venetian. Get that crispy, juicy goodness on a biscuit with pepper jelly, on a cheddar waffle with spiced watermelon or all by itself, a simple half bird with honey hot sauce. Its all familiar and flavorful, but you might not know Yardbird has one of the Strips best beer selections, including regional craft favorites as well as Las Vegas own brewery champions like Able Baker, Big Dogs, Tenaya Creek and more.
The recently reopened El Burro Borracho (855.888.3463) at the Rio is a terrific spot to enjoy some Mexican food with a draft Modelo Especial or Dos Equis lager. Celebrity chef Guy Fieri has tailored this menu as the foundation for a good time, serving up fresh guacamole, trash can nachos with carne asada or al pastor, cheeseburger tacos with Sonoran-style braised beef and chicken mole verde enchiladas.
Out west in the Downtown Summerlin complex, brand-new taproom Beer Zombies (702.780.0297) is curating hard-to-find brews from across the country and the freshest local flavors to offer a one-of-a-kind beer tasting experience, and its packing a small-but-mighty food menu to round things out. Square Sicilian-style pizza slices with your favorite savory and spicy toppings will satiate that growing appetite, or snack on addictive crispy chicken wings and Nashville Hot-flavored cauliflower.
Back on the Strip, the always popular Beerhaus (702.692.2337) at The Park will definitely fill up with hockey fans when Vegas Golden Knights games resume this month at nearby T-Mobile Arena. Better get in while you can to work your way through its endless taps and carefully selected beers while munching on rotisserie chicken, barbecue ribs, shaved roast beef sandwiches and IPA cheddarwurst brats covered in smoked bacon onion jam.
Another indoor-outdoor hot spot just up the boulevard is the rooftop Beer Park (702.444.4500) at Paris, where you split your time between watching sports on hi-def screens and observing all the Strip action below. Of course, youll also share chili verde nachos, deviled eggs, mac and cheese eggrolls and chicken cheesesteaks along with beer flights that give you four 6-ounce pours so you can sample to your hearts content. Bottoms up!

Justin Bieber takes over Wynn Las Vegas for the weekend – Las Vegas Weekly
Posted: at 3:32 pm
Justin Bieber cant get enough of Las Vegas. Before the 27-year-old Canadian pop star joined the roster for Shaquille ONeals fundraising gala at MGM Grand on October 2, he took over Wynn for a weekend of music and partying in July, with performances at Encore Theater, Delilah and XS.
Now hes back for another series of Vegas events, thanks to the folks at Pollen, the upstart travel experience and entertainment company behind the recent J Balvin Nen Experience at Resorts World (which will be back in action in Cancun in January) and this months Emo Nite Vegas Vacation featuring Avril Lavigne, Travis Barker and many more at various Vegas venues (October 14-17).
The Justin Bieber and Friends weekend packages have been sold out for weeks, combining hotel stays at the Linq, Treasure Island, Wynn/Encore or Resorts World with parties at XS and Encore Beach Club and a pop-up skate park experience at Area15. But table reservations for the club events are still available. The lineup of guest artists joining Bieber includes Stay collaborator The Kid Laroi, R&B and hip-hop fave Kehlani, rapper and actor Jaden Smith, British DJ TroyBoi and Puerto Rican singer Lunay.
With its flexible payment plans and varied experiencesfrom EDM pool parties to ski tripsthe youth-oriented Pollen brand is on the rise and becoming increasingly active in Las Vegas. Since guests can easily book the same trip and itinerary as their friends through the platform, it appears to be a great fit for college-age Vegas visitors and for the Bieber demographic.
Although his summer appearance at Wynn was a one-off designed to build buzz around the opening of the lavish Delilah supper cluband a full-fledged Las Vegas Strip residency seems unlikely, given Biebers rescheduled Justice world tour kicking off in Februaryit wouldnt be surprising to see him sign on for recurring duty at Wynns clubs, similar to Drakes pre-pandemic residency arrangement at XS.
With Biebers renewed chart success and recent collaborations with other superstars, its clear he has found a way to move on from teenage pop star status and whatever came after that. As long as youre making hits, you have a home in Las Vegas.
JUSTIN BIEBER& FRIENDSOctober 7 & 9, 10:30 p.m., XS; October 8, 11 a.m., Encore Beach Club. Tables available, wynnnightlife.com.

Tracking the new restaurants from celebrities and chefs headed to Paris Las Vegas – Eater Vegas

Paris Las Vegas is making moves to become a celebrity chef headquarters on the Las Vegas Strip. Aside from reality show personality and chef Gordon Ramsay, who already has Gordon Ramsay Steak at the resort, Paris brings Nobu Matshuhisa, Lisa Vanderpump, and Martha Stewart into the fold in 2022.
It started with Jean Joho, the chef behind Eiffel Tower Restaurant. When Paris Las Vegas opened on the Strip in 1999, the chef claimed a space on the 11th floor of the half-scale replica of the Eiffel Tower at the resort. Joho brought his French fare with a view to the Parisian-themed resort with French actress Catherine Deneuve turning on the lights on that September opening day. Joho, as hes more commonly known, earned accolades in Chicago for his restaurant Everest, where he won a James Beard Foundation award for Best Chef Midwest in 1995. Everest closed after 35 years last New Years Eve in Chicago.
The push for more big names revived in 2012, when Ramsay opened his steakhouse at the resort, complete with a faux Chunnel taking diners from the Parisian resort to the very British Gordon Ramsay Steak, replete with a Union Jack on the ceiling and sticky toffee pudding and beef Wellington on the menu. The restaurant took over the former Les Artisties steakhouse space, and on the 20th season of Hells Kitchen: Young Guns, Trent Garvey won the title of head chef at the restaurant and $250,000.
Then in November 2020, Guy Savoy, the French chef with the Michelin-three-starred eponymous restaurant in the City of Lights, brought his pastry shop to the resort. Brioche by Guy Savoy features pastries made in house daily, including, of course, brioche, which comes in variations that can come stuffed with mushrooms, Parmesan, and nuts, or sweet candied fruit and Nutella. The location sits next to the Paris Las Vegas hotel lobby.
Now parent company Caesars Entertainment pulls out the big guns on the resort with a sign shaped like the Montgolfier balloon, a porte cochre with a two-thirds replica of the Arc de Triomphe, a replica of La Fontaine des Mers, and a facade that hints at the Louvre, Muse dOrsay, and Paris Opera House.
Matsuhisa opens his third eponymous restaurant in Las Vegas and second on the Strip in 2022. Matsuhisas indelible mark on the culinary world includes his signature dishes such as miso-marinated black cod, rock shrimp tempura, yellowtail sashimi with jalapeo, and king crab tempura, many of which can be found on any high-end Japanese menu now. He already has a restaurant with teppanyaki tables and a hotel at Caesars Palace and a recently reopened restaurant at Virgin Hotels.
Vanderpump Rules and Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Vanderpump has Vanderpump Paris with her roster of dishes and cocktails, and a lush Parisian-inspired decor from Nick Alain this winter. The bar transports customers to the City of Light with ornate awnings and light fixtures with the entrance flanked by statues next to the Paris Las Vegas front desk.
And new construction permits call for a Martha Stewart Restaurant, which already filed a new permits for $2 million in estimated construction costs alone to bring her still mysterious restaurant to Le Boulevard, the shopping esplanade at Paris.
Follow along as these three newcomers get ready to open in 2022.
