Las Vegas Raiders OC Greg Olsons impact on offense – Silver And Black Pride

Posted: October 17, 2021 at 4:46 pm

The Las Vegas Raiders are full of drama after offensive emails led to Jon Gruden resigning on Monday. The move then led to Rich Bisaccia becoming the interim head coach and the rest of the coaching staff saying on board.

The Raiders still have a game scheduled against the Denver Broncos at Mile High, with both teams going from 3-0 starts to now being 3-2. The Broncos will be ready to play, and the Raiders will need this to prevent a free fall.

The offense has been ugly the past two matchups. In the last two weeks, they are 30th in EPA per play. The passing offense has taken the worst hit. They started the season 8th after the first three weeks but 31st the last two weeks using RBSDM.com.

Raiders have become dependent on explosive plays, and in the last two games, they just haven't been there. The offense ranked second in explosive passing plays Weeks 1-3. According to SharpFootballStats.com, they ranked 15th Weeks 3-4.

Derek Carr's aggressiveness that was a gift the first three weeks of the season and is now a curse. Here are Carr's numbers on deep passes over 20 plus yards in the air from Pro Football Focus.

Week 1 - 3/8

Week 2 - 4/4

Week 3 - 5/10

Week 4 - 1/5

Week 5 - 1/8

If you ever wonder as a Raiders fan how the Seattle Seahawks wore down at the end of the season, there is your answer. Football offenses must be multiple and not reliant on just winning one type of way.

That's where Greg Olson comes in as the new play-caller for the Raiders. Olson has worked with Carr before as a play-caller during his rookie season and beat Vic Fangio back in 2014. Olsons first job is to fix the vertical passing game and get the Raiders back on the right path.

Olson's track record as a play-caller isn't extraordinary when you look at the numbers. However, he maximized the quarterback play he had before him, creating career years from Blake Bortles and Josh Freeman; he then helped Jared Goff go from terrible as a rookie to leading a team to the playoffs in his second year. He has a great history of getting the best out of quarterbacks and helping them reach their potential.

What is Olson's offense?

Olson's offense is the Raiders' offense. After watching his scheme, Gruden brought him in to design the offensive passing plays. He must have been the passing game coordinator because Jacksonville Jaguars were running the same concepts and designs. Olson updated it after his time with Sean McVay back in 2018, which is why the Los Angeles schemes are similar from a pass concept perspective.

Here is the play example below. Jaguars are running a similar HB choice concept to the Raiders in Week 1 vs. the Baltimore Ravens.

The elements of the Raiders passing game is all over the Jaguars' offense's film. Olson is an able play designer and caller himself who understands how to attack defenses in certain situations.

Here is a play variation we see from the Raiders called the stick nod. The play is designed for a double move in the middle of the defense and works well against two high coverages. The Raiders struggled this year vs. two high with terrible performances the last two weeks.

The 3x1 set will correct a one-on-one with the stick nod with the middle of open. Bortles can find it after a great route from Allen Hurns for the big play.

Olson loves spread formations out of 11 personnel, which will be a change from Gruden. There won't be too many of the TE packages fans are used to seeing from the Raiders. The deep concepts will be an improvement overall.

This one, for example, Jaguars are facing single high while the offense will be running a Sluggo/post concept. What's beautiful about this one is the post occupies the safety in single-high, which leaves the one on one outside for the Sluggo. It creates separation, and the space made by the post route allows for a clean window.

The Raiders run game has been nonexistent for almost two seasons. After finishing 24th in DVOA, they are now 30th in the NFL. Since Week 9 of 2019, they averaged a DVOA ranking of 28th which has halted this offense.

Gruden's run game has been simple for a while and could be Tom Cable as well. Greg Olson's run designs are more diverse with different looks.

First, here we got counter play from the Jaguars. Raiders fans haven't seen counter in years.

Next up is the mid zone, which is a Raider offense staple at this point. The design is a cousin of the wide zone with the running back outside foot pointed to the c gap and not the d gap.

Power 0 is a pure gap scheme concept that fits this offense well. John Simpson and Leatherwood could move vertically and pull as guards in open space.

All of this can help out a stagnant run game that hasn't been good in almost two years.

Play-action passes have been nonexistent in this offense which makes no sense. The Raiders are last in the league in play-action drop backs%, but Carr on those drop backs has only been under pressure 27% of the time compared to 34% without play-action using SIS.

Olson has used play-action consistently during his time in the NFL. In 2013, Terrell Pryor ran play-action 28% of his drop backs which was 6th in the NFL. Carr's rookie season ranked 12th in the NFL in play-action drop backs with eight touchdowns and zero interceptions.

Bootlegs are plays we haven't seen much of either and are a part of Olson's identity. The Raiders run a high split zone, and the split zone action with the bootleg can create an easy YAC for Darren Waller.

Here is a play-action concept the Raiders use called bang, which is a skinny post read. Hunter Renfrow was the target of this concept in Week 1, and Carr missed him Week 4.

These elements can help the Raiders offense get back on track. It will be needed if this team wants to do anything as we advance this season.

Metro: Man arrested in fatal hit-and-run on Lake Mead …

Posted: October 11, 2021 at 10:07 am

By Associated Press

Sunday, Oct. 10, 2021 | 6:36 a.m.

A 39-year-old Las Vegas man was taken into custody by Metro Police after they say he fled the scene of a fatal hit-and-run Saturday morning.

Officers received reports of the crash at 9:55 a.m. and responded to the intersection of Lake Mead Boulevard and Marion Drive, officials said in a news release.

Evidence at the scene indicated a black 2006 Honda CBR 600 was traveling east on Lake Mead and approaching the intersection. The crash occurred when a blue 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe, driven by Jose Luis Ochoa, was traveling west and turned left in front of the motorcycle, police said.

Ochoa fled the scene but was later apprehended, police said. Arriving medical personnel transported the motorcycle driver, only identified as a 34-year-old Las Vegas resident, to University Medical Center Trauma where they later died.

Ochoa did not show signs of impairment, and was booked at the Clark County Detention Center on a hit-and-run charge, police said. The crash remains under investigation.

Sungjae Im runs the tables in Las Vegas victory – Fox News

Posted: at 10:07 am

Sungjae Im was so dialed into his game that he didn't realize how many birdies he was making in turning a shootout into a one-man show in Las Vegas.

Only when he saw a leaderboard after his big run was over seven birdies in an eight-hole stretch around the turn Sunday at the TPC Summerlin did it begin to sink in.

"When I saw that I was leading by five, I said to myself, Lets not make a mistake and I can get this done,'" he said.

By then, he had done all he needed. The 23-year-old South Korean closed with four safe pars for a 9-under 62 and a four-shot victory over Matthew Wolff in the Shriners Children's Open.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

"Very meaningful win," Im said. "It was hard coming, but I think today how everything went, I think it was a gift from above. I played so well and I'm glad I got the win."

It was the best closing round by a winner in the Shriners Children's Open since Smylie Kaufman shot 61 in 2016. Im finished at 24-under 260, matching the tournament record held by Webb Simpson (2013) and Ryan Moore (2012).

Wolff was trying to keep pace when he turned trouble into a birdie on the par-5 ninth with an 18-foot putt. But he was slowed by two tee shots that wound up in the worst of spots and led to bogeys he couldn't afford.

Wolff made a pair of late birdies for a 68 he's now 12 for 12 with rounds in the 60s at Summerlin and had to settle for a runner-up finish.

Im was among four players who had at least a share of the lead on the front nine of the TPC Summerlin on an ideal day of scoring with little wind.

When he holed a 12-foot birdie putt on the sixth hole, the third-toughest on the course, to tie for the lead, Im was just getting started.

He closed out the front nine with a simple up-and-down short of the green on the par-5 ninth to take the lead, then ran off four more birdies, the best of that lot on No. 10 when he went from a fairway bunker to 25 feet and made the putt.

"The lie was not great with the lip in front, but I got it up on the green and to make that putt for a birdie, I think that kind of gave me great confidence that I can get this done," he said.

Im won for the second time on the PGA Tour, and while hes not big into numbers, he couldnt ignore the bizarre trend. He won the Honda Classic in 2020 in his 50th start on the PGA Tour. He won in Las Vegas in his 100th start.

Odds are he wont have to wait 50 more tournaments for his next trophy.

He followed his victory in the Honda Classic with a third-place finish at Bay Hill, and then golf took a three-month hiatus because of the pandemic. He went five months without seriously contending again until the Masters in November, where he briefly challenged Dustin Johnson.

Now, he can only hope he's about to hit his stride.

"I was on a really good roll and I was feeling great about my game after the Honda win and I played well in the Arnold Palmer as well the week following it," Im said. "But it is unfortunate. Its something that I couldnt control. But after the pandemic, when golf was resumed, I really tried to find that rhythm again and there were times that was not easy.

"But, again, try to stay composed and believe in my game."

Rory Sabbatini, the Olympic silver medalist from Slovakia, shot 28 on the front nine and was briefly tied for the lead. He could only manage even par on the back nine for a 64 and tied for third with Marc Leishman (63) and 54-hole leader Adam Schenk (70).

For Wolff, there wasn't much he could do but smile.

"This game is like, when I'm in the lead or contention, someone just seems to go off the last day on me," he said. One example would be Bryson DeChambeau shooting 67 in the final round at Winged Foot while playing in the final group with Wolff in the U.S. Open last year.

"But if I keep on putting myself in these positions I know that eventually its going to be in my favor and Im going to win," he said.

Sunday wasn't that day, especially on the par-5 13th. He figured his 3-wood could easily clear the bunker on the left. And when it didn't, he assumed it would roll back to the bottom of the sand and he still would have a reasonable chance at birdie.

Instead, he said someone left the rake at the top and the ball came to rest on a slope in an indentation left by the handle. All he could was get it out some 15 feet. Even with a good lie, catching Im was going to be tough.

Sam Burns, coming off a win last week in Mississippi and only two back starting the final round, made an early birdie and then stalled until it was too late. He finished with a double bogey for a 72 and tied for 14th.

Lady Gaga makes an epic return to the Las Vegas Strip this week – Las Vegas Sun

One of the most successful headlining residencies of the modern era of Las Vegas entertainment returns to Park MGM this week. Lady Gagas Jazz & Piano concert production, featuring alternate versions of her biggest hits and American Songbook classics with a retro big-band feel, reopens on October 14 at Park Theater.

With fellow pop superstar Bruno Mars playing plenty of shows at Park Theater since July, MGM Resorts will now have two of its biggest live entertainment draws back on the books.

This is truly a special time for the destination and for Lady Gagas fans as she returns to the Las Vegas stage for the first time in more than 18 months, said Chris Baldizan, MGM Resorts' executive vice president of entertainment. We are honored that Lady Gaga calls Park MGM home and look forward to one of our generations most talented entertainers performing for all of her little monsters.

Gagas Vegas comeback shows were announced on August 23, starting on October 14 and continuing with eight more shows through October 31. Ticket prices opened on August 28 at $90 at Ticketmaster outlets and at gagavegas.com. The show requires guests to provide either proof of a negative COVID test within 72 hours of the event or full vaccination for entry. More safety information can be found at parkmgm.com.

Gaga last performed in Las Vegas on New Years Eve 2019, also a Jazz & Piano show. She originally opened the concert tour-style Enigma residency production in December 2018 with the stripped-down Jazz & Piano portion following soon after.

Even among the galaxy of stars performing headlining shows on the Las Vegas Strip, Gaga is unique as an Academy Award and Golden Globe winner, and has also amassed 12 Grammys. She has sold approximately 35 million albums globally and tallied 42 billion streams, making her one of the best-selling musical artists of all time. Her sixth studio album Chromatica was released in May of last year and became her sixth consecutive #1 album on the Billboard 200 chart.

She followed that release with her second collaboration with the legendary Tony Bennett, Love For Sale, which was released on October 1. Gaga and Bennett performed together twice in August at Radio City Music Hall, events expected to be his final live performances as Bennett has announced his retirement due to his battle with Alzheimers disease.

On a recent appearance on 60 Minutes, Gaga spoke about continuing to perform and collaborate with Bennett during his illness: "Its emotional. Its hard to watch somebody change. I think whats been beautiful about this, and whats been challenging, is to see how it affects him in some ways but to see how it doesnt affect his talent. I think he really pushed through something to give the world the gift of knowing that things can change and you can still be magnificent."

At 95, Bennett set a Guinness World Record as the oldest person to release an album of new material. In Las Vegas, he famously took the stage unannounced with Gaga at Park Theater in January 2019 to launch her Jazz & Piano residency.

Golden years: Westgate employees celebrate their 50th anniversary at the Vegas resort – Las Vegas Sun

Alonzo Langstaff, left, and Earl Manson, right, pose for a photo at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino Thursday, Oct. 7, 2021. They both started working there 50 years ago when it was known as International Hotel. (Courtesy of Westgate Las Vegas Resort &Casino)

By Bryan Horwath (contact)

Monday, Oct. 11, 2021 | 2 a.m.

Alonzo Langstaff was pushing a luggage cart through the old International Hotel on the way to the propertys elevator on this day in the 1970s.

When the door opened, Langstaff saw none other than Elvis Presley already inside. Langstaff this week is marking 50 years of work at the property, now called the Westgate Las Vegas, and can proudly rehash stories of run-ins with the likes of Elvis and Liberace.

Yes, its been a wild career working as a bellman, especially that night meeting the Memphis Flash.

I saw him in the corner (of the elevator) with that white outfit on, Langstaff said. He was thin then, and he had his guys with him. I started to back away, but he said I should come right in. He told me he was going to have a hot dog and that I was working, and he didnt want to stop me from doing my work. So, Presley moved over to allow room for the luggage cart.

We got off on the same floor, then went opposite ways and that was it, Langstaff said. Back then, entertainers were more approachable. Elvis was very nice. Entertainers today, some dont want you to even look at them. Ive met a lot of entertainers over the years.

Langstaff, 71, started at the resort on Oct. 12, 1971, and has seen it go through many changes of ownership and remodeling. And hes not the only employee celebrating the 50-year milestone this week, as close friend and fellow bellman Earl Manson started two days after, Oct. 14.

Thats still something I have to hear about, Manson said with a laugh while standing near the main entrance of the Westgate last week. When you have 50 years in, whats two days? I dont envy him.

Resort officials said the pair are so well-liked by customers that some repeat guests have been requesting one or the other to handle their bags for years.

More than 60 employees have worked at the property for at least 40 years, which is a testament to the resorts management, Langstaff said.

Langstaff said a big reason for that is the connection between employees and management. They treat everyone like family and let the employees do their jobs, he said.

Theyve treated me very well here over the years; theres never been a reason for me to leave, Langstaff said. Ownership is ownership. Its changed over the years. We started as the International, then we were the Las Vegas Hilton and the Las Vegas Hotel. The management is good here. We have probably the best president right now that weve ever had.

That would be Cami Christensen, who started at the resort as an employee at the hotel desk two decades ago and has worked her way up the propertys leadership ladder. She took over as president and general manager of the Westgate three years ago.

Perhaps its partly because all three are from rural states Christensen from Iowa, Langstaff from Arkansas, and Manson from Louisiana or perhaps they all just clicked, but the three talk fondly of each other.

When Manson came in to handle some business on one of his days off recently, Christensen didnt hesitate before greeting him at first sight with a warm hug.

We watched (Christensen) come up through the ranks, said Manson, who is affectionately known as Pops around the resort. Shes always admired what we do and praised us. She never forgot about us.

Christensen said its always been important for Westgate management to foster a family atmosphere.

In todays age, nobody thinks about making a 50-year commitment to a place, but thats what Pops and Alonzo have done, she said. Thats utterly astounding. Theres something special here, which is why Ive stayed so long.

That longevity has led to some memorable encounters.

Elvis, Liberace, Barbara Streisand and Wayne Newton were all regular performers at different times at the propertys International Theater. Barry Manilow still performs there. Langstaff once drove Liberace home following a show.

And for two years in the 1970s, it was Mansons job to take Presleys concert outfits to the cleaners every day. Those uniforms, he said, were usually soaked with sweat.

Nobody wanted to do it because he worked so hard on stage, those uniforms would stink, Manson said. I said Ill do it. In those days, those uniforms were heavy; they might have weighed about 25 pounds.

Manson has been single since his wife died in 1978, making his work family especially significant to him. They gave him plenty of guidance in raising his three adult children.

I live off people. I love talking to people and hearing their stories, Manson said. Ill do this job until my body tells me I cant.

Like Manson, Langstaff said hes not sure how much longer hell work. He knows it wont be forever, but 50 years in, hes not planning his retirement party anytime soon.

Ive always been a working man, never wanted to wear a suit and tie, Langstaff said. Ive had opportunities to go into management over the years, but that wasnt for me. Id rather work for eight hours, then go home. When the Lord tells me I dont have to come in anymore, Ill stop coming in. Otherwise, Ill be here.

The Latest: Bills-Chiefs in weather delay at halftime – Las Vegas Sun

Posted: at 10:07 am

Published Sunday, Oct. 10, 2021 | 7:15 p.m.

Updated Sunday, Oct. 10, 2021 | 7:16 p.m.

The Latest on Week 5 in the NFL (all times EDT):

10:10 p.m.

The game between the Bills and Chiefs on Sunday night went into a weather delay with about five minutes left before the start of the second half and Buffalo leading 24-13 at Arrowhead Stadium.

There were brief showers earlier in the half, and the forecast called for storms to develop throughout the night. But they appeared to be holding off until the teams headed for the locker room and lightning lit up the sky.

The Bills specialists, who were warming up on the field, were pulled into the tunnel. And the scoreboards at each end of the stadium instructed fans to seek shelter in the Arrowhead Stadium concourses.

___

7:40 p.m.

Arizona remains unbeaten, but the most pulsating game of the late afternoon session was the Chargers' 47-42 win over Cleveland.

Justin Herbert threw for 398 yards and four touchdowns, and Los Angeles overcame two missed extra points in a back-and-forth victory. The Chargers trailed 3-0, 10-7, 27-13, 35-28 and 42-35 but ultimately came out on top.

The Cardinals held off San Francisco 17-10 to improve to 5-0, Chicago beat Las Vegas 20-9 and Dallas beat the Giants 44-20.

___

7:15 p.m.

Some big names will be missing from the Buffalo and Kansas City defenses when the Bills play the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday night in a rematch of the AFC championship game.

The Bills are once again missing linebacker Matt Milano in the middle of their defense as they try to slow down Patrick Mahomes and the rest of the Chiefs offense. Hes out again with a hamstring injury.

The Chiefs are down defensive tackle Chris Jones with a wrist injury and cornerback Charvarius Ward with a quad injury.

Its also worth noting that Chiefs wide receiver Josh Gordon is active. The former All-Pro joined the team last week after the NFL cleared him to play following his sixth suspension.

Dave Skretta reporting from Kansas City, Missouri

___

6:50 p.m.

The Bears defense kept the Raiders high-scoring offense out of the end zone through three quarters in Las Vegas, and Chicago still leads 14-9 in the fourth.

Chicago led 14-3 after a scoreless third quarter at Allegiant Stadium. Then Las Vegas finally scored a touchdown on a short run by Josh Jacobs. The Raiders had the NFLs second-ranked passing offense entering the game, but Derek Carr has thrown for just 177 yards.

Carr also returned to the game after getting shaken up on a head hit during a quarterback sneak.

Greg Beacham reporting from Las Vegas

___

6:35 p.m.

Baker Mayfield threw a 71-yard touchdown pass to David Njoku with 10:40 remaining in the fourth quarter, and a 2-point conversion put Cleveland up 35-28 in a wild matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Mayfield is 18 of 22 for 271 yards and two touchdowns, and Nick Chubb has rushed for 129 yards and a TD for the Browns. Cleveland scored 17 unanswered points to go ahead 27-13, only for the Chargers to score 15 in a row before Njoku's touchdown.

___

6:15 p.m.

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones has been ruled out against the Dallas Cowboys after sustaining a concussion in the first half.

Jones was taken off on a cart after looking woozy following a hit near the goal line as he was trying to score on a bootleg. Jones and Cowboys linebacker Jabril Cox collided as Jones ended up less than a yard short of the goal line. Jones tried to get up twice, the second time stumbling before others rushed to keep him upright.

Schuyler Dixon reporting from Arlington, Texas

6:10 p.m.

The Arizona Cardinals have a 10-0 third-quarter lead over the San Francisco 49ers as they try to improve to 5-0 for the first time since 1974.

The Cardinals who are the NFLs last remaining undefeated team have made life difficult for 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance in his first pro start.

The 21-year-old Lance is playing in place of Jimmy Garoppolo, who is inactive because of a calf injury.

Lance threw an interception on his first drive, sailing a high pass beyond the intended receiver and right into the hands of Arizona safety Budda Baker. The Cardinals converted the takeaway into a touchdown eight plays later to grab a 7-0 lead.

Lance was also stopped on two fourth-down runs, including one that was just inches shy of a touchdown.

David Brandt reporting from Glendale, Arizona

6:05 p.m.

Justin Fields has thrown his first career touchdown pass, and the Chicago Bears lead 14-3 in their Las Vegas debut.

Chicago controlled the ball for nearly 18 minutes of the first half, including a 16-play drive TD that consumed more than half of the second quarter.

Fields found Jesper Horsted for a 2-yard TD to cap the Bears first scoring drive. The rookie quarterback from Ohio State played in each of the Bears first five games, but finally got his first TD pass in his third career start.

Greg Beacham reporting from Las Vegas

___

5:45 p.m.

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones has been taken off on a cart after looking woozy following a hit near the goal line as he was trying to score on a bootleg against Dallas.

Jones and Cowboys linebacker Jabril Cox collided as Jones ended up less than a yard short of the goal line. Jones tried to get up twice, the second time stumbling before others rushed to keep him upright.

After a brief evaluation, the cart came out and took Jones to the New York locker room.

Mike Glennon replaced Jones, and his first snap of the season was a handoff to Devontae Booker for a tying 1-yard touchdown on fourth down.

Booker is filling in for running back Saquon Barkley, who was ruled out after an ankle injury in the first quarter.

The Cowboys and Giants are playing again on the same field a day before the anniversary of Dallas quarterback Dak Prescotts severe ankle injury.

Schuyler Dixon reporting from Arlington, Texas

David Lee Roth: Im throwing in the shoes. Im retiring – Las Vegas Review-Journal

Posted: October 7, 2021 at 3:32 pm

Decades ago, David Lee Roth shouted, And the cradle will rock.

The vaunted showman rocked our world Friday morning.

I am throwing in the shoes. Im retiring, Roth said in a phone conversation that was more a spoken-word performance than interview. This is the first, and only, official announcement. Youve got the news. Share it with the world.

With that, Diamond Dave announced he is ending the Van Halen era and his own stage career with his five shows at House of Blues at Mandalay Bay on New Years Eve, New Years Day, Jan. 5 and Jan. 7-8.

He quickly added, Im not going to explain the statement. The explanation is in the statement. These are my last five shows.

And tickets are on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Roth started the conversation by saying, I ask that you bear with me here. Please try not to interrupt. Im going to close my eyes and take you on a ride.

Roth then said he had just spoken to Alex Van Halen, his friend for 50 years and co-founder of the legendary rock band Van Halen.

Al and I have been talking, and I cant speak for him just yet, Roth said, but he knows what I am about to say. The vocalist added, We speak to each other constantly, two or three times a day. We laugh like pirates.

Roth also had mentioned hed been thinking about the departure of my beloved classmate recently, a clear reference to guitar god Eddie Van Halen, who died of throat cancer on Oct. 6. The singer also made an oblique reference to his own mortality, as he turns 67 on Oct. 10.

I am encouraged and compelled to really come to grips with how short time is, and my time is probably even shorter, Roth said.

He mentioned Eddie Van Halen being the first member of Van Halen to pass.

I thought I might have been the first, frankly. I might have thought the Marlboro Man wouldve got me. Hey Ed, objects in the rear-view mirror are probably me, Roth allowed. And my doctors, my handlers, compelled me to really address that every time I go onstage, I endanger that future.

Nonetheless, Roth plans to lay it out totally in the House of Blues shows.

I know that when I am in the audience, whether you come out with a ukulele or a marching band, all I ask you give me everything youve got to give, he said. Thats what I did for the last 50 years.

Roth recalled Van Halens lean early years, which covered the first 5 years of the bands fabled history starting in 1972. The young musicians made $120 per night, spending most of that money on gas but splurging occasoinally at a local diner. They were once approached by a police officer while eating at Dennys in Pasadena, California.

It was the Saturday Night Supper Club, wed get there at 3 in the morning, and order everything on the menu, all three three banana splits, the Grand Slam Breakfasts with the bacon, and the ones with the sausage, Roth said, his voice rising. We pulled two tables together This cop came walking in this was Cop Town and asked, Who are you all? I said, Sir, were a rock n roll band! He said, Do you have enough money to pay for all this? And we all pulled our $125 green, crisp, sweat-through-your-(expletive)-shoes, money.

Roth said he remembered those days like they were yesterday and had run through that very story with Alex Van Halen on Friday.

I just found some pants upstairs. I save some of the old clothes, Roth said. I was a size 29. Eddie was size 26. Thats my beginnings.

Van Halen became a force in rock from the bands self-named debut album in 1978. Roth tapped into the classics from his era with the band during his January 2020 run at House of Blues, rumbling through Running With the Devil, Panama, Beautiful Girls, Ice Cream Man, Everybody Wants Some and the famous cover of Roy Orbisons Pretty Woman.

Famous for his high-leg kicks, ringmaster persona and affinity for Spandex, Roth was the ideal front man for the bands arena and stadium shows.

Those performances are now part of rock history.

Van Halens original lineup was Roth, the Van Halens, along with bassist Michael Anthony. Sammy Hagar replaced Roth as vocalist, touring and recording with the band from 1985-1996. Roth reunited with the band to present the Best Male Video of the Year Award to Beck at the 1996 MTV Video Music awards, sparking speculation the band was re-forming. Instead, Gary Cherone was enlisted as singer from 1996-2000.

Hagar returned from 2003-2005. Finally, Roth stepped back out front in 2006. with Anthony was also replaced on bass by Eddies son Wolfgang Van Halen (the younger Van Halens has dubbed his new band Mammoth WVH to honor Van Halens original name, Wolfgang).

Van Halen was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007. The band has sold more than 80 million albums internationally. Van Halen was a leading arena act and chart-topping band beginning with Roths decadelong tenure as lead singer. The band was also a happy success in the early days of MTV, with classic videos for Hot For Teacher, Panama and Jump. Roths solo covers of Just a Gigolo (I Aint Got Nobody) and California Girls were also a video hits.

With Roth as front man, the band played MGM Grand Garden Arena in 2012, the same year it released its final studio album, A Different Kind of Truth.

Roth says his backing band at House of Blues is the final iteration of Van Halen.

Ive got a band that is doing what Al and I used to call a block, that means 75 rehearsals for one show, Roth said. We are bringing it in classic VH style. Alex and I are the only version, that was his message. There is no other variation. There is no torch being passed. There is no other side to this coin. This is classic, in-your-face Van Halen.

Roth ended the call without taking a single question. His sendoff:

Ive given you all Ive got to give. Its been an amazing, great run, no regrets, nothing to say about anybody. Ill miss you all. Stay frosty.
