Clark County approves The Boring Co.’s transit loop beneath Las Vegas – Construction Dive
Posted: October 26, 2021 at 5:24 pm
Dive Brief:
The Boring Co.'s first commercial project was in Las Vegas, constructing the roughly 1-mile-long loop at the Las Vegas Convention Center for $52.5 million. This system, which was completed in February 2020, will connect to the proposed loop.
No price for the larger loop has been disclosed, and the entire project will be privately funded by The Boring Co., which is owned by entrepreneur Elon Musk. Before it can build out stations, the company will need to get separate permits for each of the stops along the strip. The construction will be done in phases, according to company president Steve Davis. Once a station is complete, it will come online.
Early plans indicate building out as many as 10 stations within the first six months of construction beginning. After that, The Boring Co. would add 15 to 20 stations each year until the project is complete.
When finished, the project is expected to transport 57,000 passengers an hour, Davis told the Review-Journal. A 3.6-mile ride from the Las Vegas Convention Center to Allegiant Stadium would take roughly four minutes and cost $6.
The Boring Co. has three years to complete construction. Thereafter, the company will need to pay the county a quarterly franchise fee based on revenue.

Viva Moc Vegas Brings the Spirit of Las Vegas to UTC’s Homecoming Week – The University Echo
Posted: at 5:24 pm
Its Homecoming season at UTC, and the energy on campus is changing as students approach this exciting time. The week of October 23-30 is full of events, contests, and ways for students to get involved leading up to the big homecoming game.
This years theme Viva Moc Vegas brings the flairs of Las Vegas to UTCs campus. Whether a student has attended homecoming before or this is their first one as a Moc, theres something going on every day.
Homecoming kicked off early on Thursday, Oct. 21 with Get the Scoop on Homecoming 2021 on Vine Street. Students were able to enjoy coke floats while learning more about the event lineup for this week.
UTC junior Katie Ghee is new to campus this year and is excited to see the campus environment amplified during the week.
Im most looking forward to how much school spirit homecoming brings out of students and it makes the week even more fun, said Ghee. The atmosphere on campus is the best!
Homecoming week is filled with fun activities, but also encourages students to give back to the Chattanooga community.
UTCs annual Day of Service was held on Oct. 23, students gathered in the University Center to write letters to veterans as well as make pillowcase dresses for local NICUs.
On Monday, Oct. 25, the Homecoming Kick-Off Pep Rally was held on Chamberlain Field where the university announced the Homecoming Court candidates for this years potential King and Queen. Voting for students is open from Oct. 26 to Oct. 29 and the winners of Homecoming King and Queen will be crowned during halftime at the UTC homecoming football this Saturday.
At the kickoff, students got to hear from Chancellor Angle as well as the city and county mayors who officially declared it UTC Homecoming Week. Performances put on from the universitys band and spirit squads opened up Homecoming Week with a student section full of school spirit.
Throughout the week, many Las Vegas-themed events will be taking place, all in true Moc spirit.
The University Center is taking students straight to Vegas for Casino Night in the Tennessee Room. On Tuesday Oct. 26, the space will be transformed into a high-stakes casino where students are welcome to try their hand at various games such as roulette, poker, or blackjack and see where the chips fall for them.
On Wednesday, Derthick Hall will become an on-campus movie theater for students to enjoy Vegas-esque films. In rooms 101 and 201 showings of The Hangover and Think Like A Man Too will begin at 8 P.M.
Closing out the week of festivities is the ARCs annual pool party Soundwaves held on Thursday, Oct. 28 from 7 to 10 P.M. Join the fun at the indoor pool and score some free food and goodies as well.
The annual homecoming football game is on Saturday, Oct. 30, this year Mocs football is taking on Furman at Finley Stadium. Students can enjoy the game and hear the announcement of UTCs 2021 Homecoming King and Queen during halftime.
Students are encouraged to start the celebration early Saturday morning by attending the Game Day Tailgate that begins at 10 A.M. The tent will be located right outside of First Tennessee Pavilion with free food and swag available to students. This year the booth will also include a DJ and photobooth for students to enjoy before heading into the stadium.
As exciting as attending these events is, planning them can be even more fun. The Homecoming Student Steering Committee works to plan a student-led homecoming every year with tons of ways for students to get involved.
Jennifer Eaton, graduate assistant for Student Engagement, says students who want to take part in the committee next year can keep up with applications via their social media.
Students interested in joining the Homecoming Student Steering Committee next year should be on the lookout for applications at the beginning of next semester to apply for next year's committee, said Eaton. To stay up to date, those students should make sure they are following our page on Instagram (@utchomecoming) as we post the information in the coming months.
For the full homecoming events schedule, visit https://www.utc.edu/enrollment-management-and-student-affairs/student-and-family-engagement/homecoming or access Mocs Sync with your UTC ID to register.

Solid earnings drive US stocks further into record heights – Las Vegas Sun
Posted: at 5:24 pm
Published Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2021 | 1:10 p.m.
Updated 1 hour, 11 minutes ago
Stocks held on to modest gains on Wall Street Tuesday, pushing the S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average further into record heights. The S&P 500 added 0.2% and the Dow edged up less than 0.1%. The Nasdaq also rose less than 0.1%. Solid earnings from several companies helped push stock prices higher. UPS jumped 6.9% after the package delivery service reported results that easily beat analysts forecasts. Facebook fell 3.9% following a weak sales forecast and increasing scrutiny over its corporate practices. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.61%.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. APs earlier story follows below.
Stocks rose in afternoon trading on Wall Street Tuesday and pushed major indexes further into record heights as investors review mostly solid company earnings.
The S&P 500 index rose 0.3% as of 3:28 p.m. Eastern and is hovering just above the record high it set on Monday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 86 points, or 0.3%, to 35,828 and is also just above its record high. The Nasdaq rose 0.1%.
Technology stocks did much of the heavy lifting for the broader market. Health care stocks and a mix of companies that rely on consumer spending for goods and services also made solid gains.
Communications stocks fell. Facebook shed 4.4% after giving investors a weak sales forecast. The company is also facing scrutiny over its seemingly lax regulation of harmful and misleading information on its platform.
Bond yields were mostly higher, though the yield on the 10-year Treasury slipped to 1.62% from 1.63% from late Monday.
Solid earnings reports helped lift several major companies. UPS jumped 7.5% as higher shipping rates helped the package delivery service easily beat analyst's third-quarter profit forecasts. Hasbro rose 3.7% after the maker of Transformers, My Little Pony and other toys reported solid financial results.
Stocks have been pushing broadly higher as companies turn in much stronger profit reports for the summer than analysts had expected.
Right now, valuations are high and the market needs some reassurance from corporate earnings, said Ernesto Ramos, chief investment officer in the U.S. for BMO Global Asset Management. There are still plenty of risks out there, but the market is focusing on the good things right now.
Investors received several encouraging economic updates on Tuesday. U.S. consumer confidence rose in October after three straight declines as the publics anxiety about the delta variant of the coronavirus appear to have abated. New home sales jumped 14% in September to the fastest pace in six months as strong demand helped offset rising prices.
The broader market is also reacting well to signals that big spending plans in Washington and potential tax increases for companies will likely be diluted, Ramos said.
Wall Street is still concerned about how much of an impact supply chain problems will have on a wide range of industries. Many companies have already warned about higher costs cutting into operations.
Paint maker Sherwin-Williams rose 2% even though its latest results revealed that higher raw materials costs crimped its finances.
Microsoft and Googles parent company, Alphabet, will report their own results after the closing bell Monday, along with Twitter. European markets were higher and Asian markets closed mixed.
Investors still have a busy week of corporate earnings ahead. Airplane maker Boeing and beverage company Coca-Cola will report their results on Wednesday.
General Motors and Ford will also release their results on Wednesday. The reports could help give investors a clearer picture of how the auto industry is dealing with supply chain problems, including a chip shortage that has been weighing on auto production.
Apple and Amazon will report on Thursday. The companies, along with Microsoft and Google, are the four biggest companies on Wall Street by market value and their stock movements have a huge effect on the S&P 500.

VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. - A Las Vegas man was arrested this month after an investigation determined he was involved in five separate thefts at Home Depot locations in Camarillo, Oxnard, Thousand Oaks and Simi Valley.
The Ventura County Sheriff's Office conducted an investigation which identified the 24-year-old man as the suspect in all five grand thefts during which he allegedly stole thousands of dollars in brand power tools.
On Wednesday, Oct. 13, deputies said the man entered the Camarillo Home Depot and attempted to steal more power tools.
The man was reportedly confronted by a store employee but used physical force to push past the employee and flee the store.
Other employees said they recognized the man from prior thefts and recorded his license plate before he drove off.
The man then fled the Home Depot parking lot in the vehicle which deputies confirmed was stolen out of Inglewood.
Deputies began a search for the vehicle which was spotted the following day in Thousand Oaks driving southbound on Highway 101.
Crews pulled the vehicle over on the freeway and successfully arrested the Las Vegas man for multiple grand thefts and a stolen vehicle.
During a search of the vehicle, deputies said they found additional power tools that were suspected of being stolen from the Home Depot in Goleta.

The greatest thing to ever happen to Las Vegas, Local casino owner shares excitement over underground tunnel expansion – KLAS – 8 News Now
Posted: at 12:12 pm
LAS VEGAS (KLAS) After Clark County Commissioners approved plans to expand the Vegas Loop underground transportation system Wednesday, a local casino owner shared his excitement over the proposal.
People talk about the old days, Kenny Epstein told 8 News Now of Las Vegas. Today is better than its ever been.
Epstein owns and operates El Cortez Hotel & Casino; hes also dedicated decades to our local gaming industry.
He and El Cortez Chief Operating Officer Mike Nolan said they cant wait to see the system operate right outside the iconic, downtown property.
This has to be the greatest thing to ever happen to Las Vegas, Epstein exclaimed.
Clark County Commissioners approved plans to expand the tunnel system to 29 miles Wednesday. It will feature 51 stops from McCarran International Airport to the Las Vegas Strip, downtown, and even UNLV.
This project is going to be a game-changer for the city, Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority CEO Steve Hill told 8 News Now of the Vegas Loop expansion.
He said the system, which will be built and funded by Elon Musks Boring Company, is a great way to cut down on traffic congestion while boosting business.
It allows our visitors, our customers to experience everything we have here, Hill added. In a fun and convenient way.
As for Epstein and Nolan, they said they are thrilled to have more exposure on their side of the city, as we travel by electric car right into the future.
It allows people to travel down here, Nolan said, referring to downtown. And our people who are staying downtown, to travel to other areas too.
Just make it better, Epstein concluded.Better for everyone.
The Las Vegas Convention Center Loop is currently functioning, with 1.7 miles of tunnel and three stations.
Hill told 8 News Now the expansion of that tunnel to Resorts World is about halfway done and should be complete by the first quarter of 2022.
Hill said construction for the full expansion should start in the next 6 to 12 months, with the full project complete in the next few years.

QAnon-linked convention kicks off in Las Vegas with misinformation – Las Vegas Review-Journal
Posted: at 12:12 pm
The QAnon-linked convention that kicked off in Las Vegas on Friday has served up misinformation on the predictable topics.
On Saturday, speakers at the For God and Country Patriot Double Down event riled the couple hundred people who showed up to the Ahern Hotel by spouting unfounded claims of widespread fraud in the 2020 election and casting doubt on COVID-19 vaccines.
We know there was election fraud, are you kidding? said Jason Sullivan, a social media strategist for Donald Trumps 2016 presidential campaign. Were done trying to prove that it happened. Were about to turn it around.
Others will have to prove they provided a secure election system, he told attendees. Sullivan later led the crowd in chants of Sheep no more!
The convention, organized by The Patriot Voice, faced an uncertain future when Caesars Entertainment dropped the event in August. The event drew media coverage for using QAnon imagery in its advertising materials. Last month, the convention found a new venue in the Ahern Hotel.
The QAnon conspiracy started in the fringes of the internet in 2017 but has crept into mainstream right-wing politics. Followers believe a secret group of Satan-worshipping, cannibalistic pedophiles control the deep state government.
Andre Popa, the events emcee on Saturday, told the crowd that government leaders are paid off to work against the public.
One attendee said during the event that they planned to put up signs asking what really happened during 9/11, a question Popa called beautiful.
Popa also raised questions about the COVID-19 vaccines, which health officials say are safe and effective.
When theyre talking about the vax, this aint no vax, Popa said. Because typically when youre getting the flu jab thing, its supposed to have the flu in it so the body builds its stuff. So is the thing today in this juice? So then how can it be? Therefore its not. So then the question is, what is it?
On the second floor of the event area, Trump hats and shirts were for sale at a merchandise stand with a Trump won flag draped over the front. Flags hanging over a railing that were visible from the ground floor said Trump is still my president and Stop the steal.
Despite numerous legal challenges, no evidence has emerged to suggest there was widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election.
Media access to the event was highly restricted. A Las Vegas Review-Journal reporter was escorted by event staff, confined to one area and told to leave shortly before noon.
Shawn Sudduth, an executive assistant for one of the events organizers, said he doesnt think there is widespread belief in the secret cabal of cannibals conspiracy, and that the people behind the event on Saturday are not those people.
He said the media has misrepresented QAnon as an organization, and that the movement is about a search for truth. This weekends convention is not a QAnon event, but just an opportunity to bring God-loving American patriots together, he said.
He did say its possible the cannibalistic pedophile group does exist because people are capable of all sorts of things.
The FBI has recognized QAnon as a potential domestic terror threat, but Sudduth said the people in attendance want peace.
Well, the federal government has a long history of lying, he said. It has a long history of being a corrupt institution.
The convention is scheduled to run through Monday. Nevada secretary of state candidate Jim Marchant, a former assemblyman, is scheduled to speak at the conference.

How to watch EDC Las Vegas 2021 live stream and set times guide – The Groove Cartel
Posted: at 12:12 pm
Last updated:October 24, 2021
The legendary Electric Daisy Carnival, EDC Las Vegas will return, after a year hiatus because of the pandemic, in its historic location: Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The festival will run from tomorrow, October the 22nd all the way to Sunday, the 24th. 2021 edition will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the festival.
For the first time in its history, Electric Daisy Carnival will live stream the entire festival via Roblox. EDC has created a virtual space called Insomniac World Party where you will be able to enjoy all the live sets from the festival. The virtual space has been open since yesterday. It includes four stages from the festival ground. As attendees in the metaverse move from stage to stage, the music changes.
The festivals actual sets will be streamed on Roblox 24 hours after their in-person performances, with select artists joining shows inside the experience. Acts will perform on the same stage in the metaverse as they did at the live event, emulating real-world performances in the digital realm.
Electric Daisy Carnival Las Vegas has set up 8 + 1 channels for the live stream. KineticFIELD, CircuitGROUNDS, CosmicMEADOW, and BassPOD are all streamed live. Some of them may broadcast only audio during selected performances. Check below.
The whole festival is also available via Insomniac TV.
Cosmic Meadow will open early, as seems to be the custom in the past editions. It will be all about house music. On Friday, John Summit will perform a short set, as well as a tasty Vintage Culture b2b Solardo. On Saturday we suggest to not missing the special Diplo b2b Lee Foss house set. Finally, on Sunday, Blossom, and Z-Trip will kick things off.
The official opening hour for the festival is 7 PM; if you have the energy to start things off early, there are still some acts to see. Frank Walker will perform at Kinetic Field, and Moore Kismet at Cosmic Meadow. Lucati is opening Circuit Grounds if you need some house music.
If youre around at 9 PM, we suggest going over Kinetic Field for Nicky Romero; at the same time, Claptone takes the stage at Circuit Grounds. At 11:15 PM, Don Diablo takes over Kinetic, but at this point, you have to choose as Tchami will perform at Circuit Grounds at the same time.
From now on, things are getting interesting. The Chainsmokers will perform at 12:28 PM at Kinetic; it will be one of their first show since the pandemic. Zhu will perform at 12:00 PM at Cosmic Meadow, NGHTMRE will light up Basspod, and Alison Wonderland will perform at 12:45 pm at Circuit Grounds. Even you if will chose a stage randomly, youll definitely end up listening to some quality music. We would like to suggest going over The Chainsmokers as they may drop some new stuff. Following that Alesso will take over Kinetic. We highly suggest going there as every year he played new music at EDC Las Vegas. Another interesting performance will be at Basspod where Kayzo b2b Knife Party set will take place.
Day 1 was pretty intensive but Day 2 schedule is no different. At 8:45 PM we suggest going over Circuit Ground for the legendary Benny Benassi. At the same time, Oliver Heldens will also play so, a smart move would be to listen to a half set of both.
After that, Diplo at Cosmic Meadow is the most intuitive choice. Now, things got complicated with Martin Garrix at Circuit Grounds, where hell undoubtedly drop a slew of new IDs, and Tiesto at the Kinetic. If we were you, we would head over Circuit Grounds for the simple reason that, you will have Deadmau5 right after him.
DJ Snake is scheduled for Kinetic, and he brings it every time he performs at EDC. If youre an Anjuna fun, as we are, you wont miss Ilan Bluestone light up Quantum Valley.
Groove Cartels favorite, Charlotte de Witte will play at Neon Garden with Vintage Culture closing Kinetic.
EDC gives you a chance to catch your breath, kind of, on Sunday. We suggest ARTY at Kinetic and Throttle at Circuit Grounds.
If theres a performance you cant miss, its Eric Prydz at midnight. Cosmic Meadow will host Zedd. Alternatively, Kygo at Kinetic.

Oakland As stadium saga continues at both Howard Terminal and Las Vegas – Athletics Nation
Posted: at 12:12 pm
The Oakland As 2021 season is over, but new rumblings are beginning in the eternal quest for a new stadium.
When we last checked in, back in July, the Oakland City Council approved a non-binding term sheet for the Howard Terminal ballpark and surrounding development. However, it wasnt quite the same terms the team had proposed, meaning the two sides still had details to figure out regarding funding. One possible solution involved money being chipped in by Alameda County, and the county was set to discuss the matter in late October.
In the meantime, the As are keeping the option of relocation on the table in case they dont work out a deal to stay in the Bay Area. Theyve continued to explore options in Las Vegas.
Here are the latest updates.
On Tuesday, the Hayward City Council put support behind getting the county involved in the As project. They voted to recommend Alameda County look at opting in to the tax district capturing tax revenue beyond whats already there to cover some of the infrastructure improvements for the Athletics Howard Terminal ballpark development, reports Ron Leuty of the SF Business Times.
Also this week, Keith Carson, President of the Alameda County Board of Supervisors, said the following in a letter to colleagues, via Brodie Brazil of NBCS:
On September 19th I received a letter from Supervisors Haubert and Valle regarding the Oakland As Stadium item set for discussion on Tuesday, October 26th.
Per the request of Supervisors Haubert and Valle I am placing this item on the October 26, 2021, Board of Supervisors agenda as a 12:00pm Set Matter, for discussion and possible action on a resolution declaring the County of Alamedas non-binding intent to contribute the Countys share of incremental property taxes to finance portions of the City of Oaklands Waterfront Ballpark at Howard Terminal for 45 years through an Enhanced Infrastructure Financing District (EIFD).
On Friday, Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf said the following to Casey Pratt of ABC7:
I feel very confident there will be a (County) vote on Tuesday and that vote will be YES. I commend the county for the due diligence that they have performed over these last several weeks, to really dig into the numbers and economic benefits for them and their mission particularly to deliver on public health.
Pratt continued with some analysis:
The Alameda County Board of Supervisors vote would be non-binding. Its important they sign on to the on-site IFD so key parts of the deal can be finalized. Anything but an affirmative YES vote will confirm to the Commissioner of Major League Baseball that there is not a path. So whats next?? Once the County signs on, they can reach a final financial plan. The EIR release is expected before the end of the year. Development Agreement would come shortly after. All these things are needed before binding vote.
The next step comes on Oct. 26, with the county hopefully having a vote and choosing yes.
Two decades into their stadium saga, the As and MLB are playing hardball this time around. While the process continues here in the Bay Area, the As have also begun reaching out to Las Vegas about the possibility of moving there.
Last week in an interview with the Sports Business Journal, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred cast pessimism on keeping the As in Oakland, and again broached the idea of relocation:
Its dragged on so long. Frankly, in some ways, were not sure we see a path to success in terms of getting something built in Oakland.
After the World Series is over, the As are expected to announce a list of finalists among potential locations in Vegas.

None of this provides any new answers, but its progress. There might be a real update about Howard Terminal next week, and the team isnt easing off the pressure as they keep escalating their public flirtation with Vegas.
