Who is the real Ghislaine Maxwell: Epstein enabler or pawn? – Las Vegas Sun
Posted: November 28, 2021 at 10:04 pm
Published Sunday, Nov. 28, 2021 | 8:31 a.m.
Updated 7 hours, 31 minutes ago
NEW YORK (AP) Ghislaine Maxwell spent the first half of her life with her father, a rags-to-riches billionaire who looted his companies' pension funds before dying a mysterious death. She spent the second with another tycoon, Jeffrey Epstein, who killed himself while charged with sexually abusing teenage girls.
Now, after a life of both scandal and luxury, Maxwell's next act will be decided by a U.S. trial.
Starting Monday, prosecutors in New York will argue that even as she was sipping cocktails with the likes of Prince Andrew, Bill Clinton and Donald Trump, Maxwell, 59, was secretly abetting Epsteins crimes with girls as young as 14.
A key question for jurors: Was Maxwell an unwitting pawn of Epsteins manipulations or an opportunist who knew all about his sex crimes?
Ian Maxwell says his sister is being railroaded by a U.S. criminal justice system intent on holding someone responsible for Epsteins crimes.
And she is paying a heavy price, a blood price for that, he told The Associated Press.
Ghislaine Maxwell grew up at Headington Hill Hall, a 51-room English country mansion where politicians, business leaders and newspaper editors attended lavish parties punctuated by trumpeters and fireworks. BBC images from the time show Ghislaine as a child with a kid-size plate of food, circling in a party dress, learning how to be a master networker.
Her father, born Jan Ludvik Hoch, was one of nine children of Yiddish-speaking parents in a village in what is now southwestern Ukraine. Escaping the Holocaust, he ultimately joined the British Army, rising to the rank of captain and transforming himself into Robert Maxwell.
After the war, Maxwell built on his military connections to buy the rights to German scientific journals, the beginnings of a publishing empire that ultimately included the Daily Mirror, one of Britains biggest tabloid newspapers, as well as the New York Daily News and the book publisher Macmillan.
Along the way he married, fathered nine children and was twice elected to Parliament. He also earned a reputation for boorish behavior and bullying subordinates.
Ghislaine was Maxwell's youngest child, born on Christmas Day 1961. Her brother Michael was severely brain damaged in a car accident just days later at age 15, although he lived for another seven years.
Her mother, Elisabeth Maxwell, wrote in her memoir that she and Robert were so focused on their injured son that their baby daughter was overlooked. So neglected was Ghislaine that at the age of 3 she stood in front of her mother and said, Mummy, I exist!
I was devastated, Elisabeth Maxwell wrote in A Mind of My Own: My Life with Robert Maxwell. And from that day on, we all made a great effort with her, fussing over her so much that she became spoiled, the only one of my children I can truly say that about.
While studying history at the University of Oxford in the early 1980s, Ghislaine Maxwell began building contacts of her own, including Prince Andrew, who would later invite her and Epstein to Windsor Castle and Sandringham, Queen Elizabeth IIs country estate.
After graduating, she worked for her father in a variety of roles. In 1991, at age 29, she became his U.S. emissary after he bought the Daily News amid efforts to compete with fellow media tycoon and New York Post owner Rupert Murdoch.
Later that year, Robert Maxwell fell off his yacht the Lady Ghislaine in the Canary Islands and died in what some saw as an accident and others a suicide. Investors would discover his wealth was an illusion: He had diverted hundreds of millions of pounds from his companies pension funds to prop up his empire.
Soon after her fathers death, Ghislaine Maxwell was photographed sitting next to Epstein during a memorial at the Plaza Hotel.
John Sweeney, a longtime U.K. journalist and creator of the podcast Hunting Ghislaine, told the AP he believes that after the monster her father died, she found a second monster."
Robert Maxwell stole hundreds of millions of pounds from people who were dependent upon his good word; Jeffrey Epstein turned out to be a darker figure, a worse human being, Sweeney said.
Ian Maxwell said his sisters relationship with Epstein developed after the family advised her to remain in the U.S. because the Maxwell name was in the dirt at home. Amid the family's reputational and financial woes, she had to make her own way in New York and forge new friendships, he said.
One of those was with Epstein, a onetime teacher who built his own fortune on the back of contacts like the former CEO of the parent company of lingerie retailer Victorias Secret.
My father was a powerful man you know, an alpha male, really. And when you have that kind of experience, all of us, all of the brothers and sisters have had to somehow deal with that, Ian Maxwell said. Ghislaine was no exception. But clearly to then say, Well, you know, he dies, then she moves along to the next rich man. I just dont buy that.
In sworn testimony for an earlier civil case, Ghislaine Maxwell acknowledged that she had a romantic relationship with Epstein but said she later became his employee, tasked with things like hiring staff for his six homes.
I hired assistants, architects, decorators, cooks, cleaners, gardeners, pool people, pilots. I hired all sorts of people, Maxwell said during a deposition in April 2016. A very small part of my job was to find adult professional massage therapists for Jeffrey. As far as Im concerned, everyone who came to his house was an adult professional person.
But in 2005, Epstein was arrested in Palm Beach, Florida, and accused of hiring multiple underage girls many students at a local high school to perform sex acts. He pleaded guilty to a charge of procuring a person under 18 for prostitution and served 13 months in jail.
Years of civil litigation followed, in which women accused Epstein and Maxwell of sexual abuse. Prosecutors in New York revived the case and charged Epstein with sex trafficking in 2019, but he killed himself in jail before he could face trial.
The indictment against Maxwell is based on accusations from four women who say she recruited them to give Epstein massages that progressed into sexual abuse. One was just 14 at the time. Maxwell sometimes participated in the sexual encounters and was involved in paying at least one accuser, prosecutors allege.
Annie Farmer alleges she was 16 when she was tricked into visiting Epsteins New Mexico ranch under the guise of attending an event for college-bound students. But when she arrived, there were no other students. She said Maxwell tried to groom her by taking her to the movies and shopping, and giving her an unsolicited massage while the teenager was topless.
The AP does not identify people who say they were victims of sexual abuse unless they come forward publicly. Although she is not identified by name in court documents, Farmer has described her experiences in interviews with ABC and The New York Times. When Maxwell a citizen of the U.S., U.K. and France sought bail, Farmer asked the judge to deny it, calling her a psychopath.
I do not believe that ... any of the women she exploited will see justice if she is released on bail, Farmer wrote in a letter to the court. She has lived a life of privilege, abusing her position of power to live beyond the rules. Fleeing the country in order to escape once more would fit with her long history of anti-social behavior.
Virginia Giuffre, who has filed a related civil lawsuit against Britains Prince Andrew but isn't part of the criminal case, has described Maxwell as a Mary Poppins figure who made young girls feel comfortable as they were being lured into Epstein's web.
Giuffre alleges she was 17 when she was flown to London to have sex with Andrew at Maxwells house. Other encounters with Andrew occurred at Epsteins homes in Manhattan and the U.S. Virgin Islands, according to her lawsuit. Andrew denies the allegations.
Prosecutors say Maxwell went into hiding after Epstein's suicide, moving into a gated New Hampshire home she bought for $1 million with a husband her lawyers have declined to publicly identify and wrapping her cellphone in foil to ward off hacking.
Maxwell was just protecting herself from the press, her lawyers said in court papers a notion U.S. District Judge Alison J. Nathan rejected.
Nathan repeatedly denied Maxwell bail, deeming the risk of her fleeing too great. The judges decision has left Maxwell isolated at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, confined to a small cell equipped with a toilet and a concrete bed. Ian Maxwell said imprisonment is preventing his sister from receiving a fair trial.
Ghislaine Maxwell has remained mostly silent about the Epstein allegations over nearly two decades, but in a 2016 deposition in a civil case, she said she learned about the allegations against him like everybody else, like the rest of the world, when it was announced in the papers.
She said she never saw Epstein getting massages from anyone under 18 and that no one ever complained to her that Epstein demanded sex.
Never," she declared.
With Epstein gone and no apparent recordings of alleged incidents that occurred two decades ago, the trial will likely hinge on the women's allegations and Maxwells denial.
A jury will soon decide who it believes.

Thanksgiving travelers ready to feast in fully reopened Las Vegas – Las Vegas Review-Journal
Posted: at 4:21 pm
Thanksgiving holiday travelers are coming, and they have quite the appetite.
Its the second Thanksgiving weekend during the pandemic. But the circumstances are different this year: There are no pandemic capacity restrictions, shows are up and running, COVID-19 vaccines are widely available across the country and international borders are open to vaccinated travelers. Mask mandates are again in place.
Those factors bode well for Las Vegas tourism economy and its chances of resembling a pre-pandemic Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
Officials anticipate Las Vegas visitation will be more in line with 2019 than Thanksgiving 2020. Thats when large gatherings were prohibited, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was advising against travel and Gov. Steve Sisolak had just ordered casinos to cap their maximum number of patrons to 25 percent of fire code capacity.
Theres a lot more of Vegas to love since weve fully reopened, Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority spokeswoman Lori Nelson-Kraft said.
Holiday weekends are a favorite of Las Vegas Valley resorts because they present guests the opportunity to stay and spend an extra day or two, Nelson-Kraft said. She added that hotels fill roughly 90 percent of the rooms they make available during Thanksgiving weekend.
The visitors authority hasnt calculated visitor projections during the pandemic and wont change that for the holiday weekend. However, the authority does anticipate a busy weekend with the potential to reach 2016 to 2019 levels of roughly 300,000 visitors for the weekend, she said.
The Nevada Department of Transportation anticipates a similar-sized visitor volume for the weekend with many of them coming from Southern California and Arizona, spokeswoman Adrienne Packer said. Tourism is generally down during the pandemic as some tourists remain reluctant to risk exposure to the deadly coronavirus, she said, adding that recent holiday weekends such as Fourth of July werent significantly lower than average.
Motorists will have to contend with higher-than-average gas prices across the West. A gallon of gas on Monday cost an average of $3.409 in the United States, according to AAA.
California led all states in average gas prices at $4.706 per gallon, while Hawaii came in second at $4.344 a gallon and Nevada had the third-highest average prices at $3.982. Also landing in the top-10 highest gas prices were Arizona and Utah at $3.738 and $3.695, respectively.
Nationally, an estimated 53.4 million people will travel for the Thanksgiving holiday this year, up 13 percent from 2020, according to AAA.
Not just holiday, but events
Resorts have seen much higher bookings, occupancy, room rates and ticket sales for this upcoming Thanksgiving holiday weekend than they did last year, Nevada Resort Association President Virginia Valentine said. She cited concerts, events and 10 major sporting events over the weekend a Raiders game, a Golden Knights game, college basketball tournaments, boxing, motorsports and an equestrian event among them as drivers behind the holiday weekend.
She said resorts are excited about the potential return of international tourists after nearly two years of pandemic travel restrictions. The U.S. opened its borders on Nov. 8 to international travelers who have proof of vaccination against COVID-19.
International guests stay longer and spend more, Valentine said, adding that Thanksgiving doesnt have the same meaning for them.
Overall, its another positive sign for Las Vegas full economic recovery, Valentine said.
A J.P. Morgan survey of Las Vegas Strip room rates for the week of Thanksgiving published Oct. 31 found midweek rates were up 6 percent and weekend rates were up 16 percent over the same week in 2019. Room rates are often viewed as a useful stand-in for assessing demand.
MGM Resorts International midweek rates were up 4 percent and weekend rates were up 29 percent from 2019, while Caesars Entertainment Inc. midweek rates were down 20 percent and weekend rates were down 9 percent, according to the survey authored by gaming analyst Joseph Greff. Wynn Resorts Ltd. midweek rates were up 23 percent and weekend rates up 47 percent from 2019, and Las Vegas Sands Corp. rates were up 61 percent midweek and 17 percent over the weekend.
Room rates looked strong over the extended holiday weekend, according to Brendan Bussmann, partner at Global Market Advisors consulting firm. He said he hopes the rates continue to reflect growth and return to pre-pandemic levels.
Last years Thanksgiving was actually surprisingly strong by 2020 standards as people had pent-up demand to travel but couldnt see their families, said Amanda Belarmino, a UNLV hospitality professor who studies the relationships between social and cultural movements and customer behavior.
Return of buffets popular
She said Las Vegas lack of family-friendly activities makes it less of a traditional destination for Thanksgiving and Christmas travelers. But she added that travel demand to Las Vegas has grown along with the valleys population.
I would expect this year to be similar to what we usually see, lighter demand that we have been seeing throughout this year but with a fair amount of travel to see family members here, she said. Also, the reopen(ed) buffets will attract people who want to get together without cooking.
Many buffets have returned though gaming operators have been reluctant to bring them back in full. Caesars Entertainment Inc. announced a Thanksgiving night dinner special at Caesars Palaces Bacchanal Buffet, as well as holiday-themed meals at restaurants across its Las Vegas properties.
Representatives for Wynn Las Vegas, Station Casinos, Red Rock Resorts, Boyd Gaming Corp. and Las Vegas Sands Corp. didnt return requests for comment. An MGM Resorts International spokeswoman declined comment.
The limited availability of buffets have changed the dynamics of how people may try to potentially overeat on their Thanksgiving meal, Bussmann said. But our food/beverage industry is unmatched by anywhere else in the world. Theres plenty of options out there to still have a great meal.
Many resort restaurants pair Thanksgiving dinner menus with holiday decor while retailers really lean into Black Friday shopping to kick off the holiday season, Nelson-Kraft said. The Bellagio Conservatory and Botanical Gardens are a holiday draw, as is the pop-up ice skating rink at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, she said.
People become eager for the beginning of the holidays, particularly while the world continues to navigate the pandemic, she said. People still have pent-up demand to get out of town and the holidays can offer a good time where people can celebrate with their families.
Vegas does a really great job of balancing the two, Nelson-Kraft said.

"Theres gonna be 600 families that are not gonna have to worry about where theyll find a holiday meal thanks to the raiders organization," said Kate Gaines, the director of development at Three Food Square Bank.
"Many of the volunteers that you see behind me were actually just down at the food bank a couple of weeks ago, packing these bags. So today, we are handing out produce, turkeys, and all the thanksgiving side youre gonna need for a holiday meal."
This is the third year in a row where the Raiders' organization has teamed up with Three Square Food Bank to distribute meals to families across Las Vegas.

Former Raider and Hall of Famer Rod Woodson said, "The Raiders are embracing coming here to Las Vegas and having this Thanksgiving giveaway. The Project will fund work byThe University of Saint Joseph Macao (USJ), Institute of Science and Environmentto provide nature-based solutions to climate change and byConservation International Singaporeto develop a virtual learning series to engage young children on the importance of protecting the ocean and nature.
Sands and Clean the World developed theDrop by Drop Projectin 2019 to reinvest capital from Sands water stewardship savings into innovative projects supporting water champions in its local regions. Funding from the Drop by Drop Project aims to increase local water resiliency, reinvigorate ecosystems, incubate new water solutions and engage the community. Because of Sands high-impact water conservation programs, these grant recipients are receiving critical funding to advance important research, said Shawn Seipler, Chairman of the Board, Clean the World Foundation. We are excited to see their findings and the solutions to local challenges that arise from their work.
This Drop by Drop grant is the second for the USJ Institute of Science and Environment to continue research pertaining to local wetlands, with special focus on mangroves. This grant is the first for Conservation International Singapore, which is aiming to further its efforts around inspiring and empowering future generations of Singaporeans to develop an appreciation of marine environments and take action for nature.

Frustration is Getting to the Raiders – Sports Illustrated
Posted: at 4:21 pm
No one in the Las Vegas Raiders locker room seemed to be happy after Sundays loss against the Cincinnati Bengals.
And Raiders linebacker Denzel Perryman is one to admit it.
Nobody likes losing and I feel like those three losses are critical, especially with us, Perryman said. We need to put it together, like we shot ourselves in the foot a lot today.
The Raiders defense may have been in contention for most of the game, but got off the brakes in the fourth quarter and allowed 19 points.
We didnt play well enough and you got to finish. You gotta play the four quarters, not three. Like I said, we just shot ourselves on the foot, Perryman added.
The Raiders have had no discipline on penalties. In crucial times, penalties have kept the defense from getting off the field.
Penalties are penalties, whether you like it or not, whether it was a good call or not, there's still laundry on the field, Perryman said. So I'll keep using that term, we shot ourselves in the foot.
Players are shying away from technique, whether they are trying to do their job, mistakes are occurring, and its frustrating a lot of players.
The team needs discipline, players need to continue to do their jobs and not allow frustration get the worst out of them, especially in key plays that prohibit them from scoring or prevent opposing teams from scoring.
The Raiders have a short week to work on these problems, and they need to, if they plan on turning this season around.

Maui Invitational Director Explains How They Pulled Off Moving the Tournament to Vegas – CalBearsMaven
Posted: at 4:21 pm
For a second consecutive year, the marquee event of mens college basketballs nonconference slate has been relocated. After playing last season in a bubble in Asheville, N.C., the Maui Invitational welcomes fans back in 2021 but will do so on the mainland in Las Vegas due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions in Hawaii. One of the main people behind that decision was Tom Valdiserri, the Maui Invitationals tournament operator through his role as an executive vice president at KemperLesnik.
Sports Illustrated sat down with Valdiserri to discuss the decision to move the tournament for a second straight year, the logistics of the late relocation and what this years Vegas-based event (which features Oregon, Houston, Notre Dame, Butler, Texas A&M, Wisconsin, St. Mary's and Chaminade) will look like.

Sports Illustrated: Can you speak to some of the very early contingency planning you put in place for this event? Obviously in the spring and early summer there was optimism that things would, essentially, be completely back to normal.
Tom Valdiserri: We learned from 2020, and we knew having plans B and C needed to take place. We had some options based on 2020 because we were in conversations with about six other markets. And, you know, for this year, it just made sense to come out to Vegas, given the location of our teams and the ease of access for them and the fans. In mid-July, we were very hopeful that we would be in Maui. We were there in Maui in mid-July, and I'd never seen it more packed in my life. And then of course, 10 days later, the Delta [variant] hits and the governor came out in August, early September and said, 'Please don't come here until the end of October.' We knew we had to start ramping up the plans and Vegas became the spot. And having worked with MGM and all their facilities in the past, we knew the people, and we knew it would be an easy transition. They're phenomenal to work with. When we walked in that building [the Michelob Ultra Arena] about a month ago, we were blown away. Love it. It was a perfect location.
SI: What was the process like of informing the schools and coaches of the move and what was their response like?
TV: The mayor of Maui, Mike Victorino, went to Honolulu in [the] last couple days of September to try to get some of the restrictions lifted in terms of travel and gatherings with the governor. And he called me on Sept. 29 and said 'it's not happening.' So we scheduled a phone call for Oct. 1, got all the coaches on a call. We informed them and said, 'Here's the plan. Here's what happened. Here's why we're moving. It was the restrictions in Hawaii, it wasn't our choice.' They were all in. [Tournament chairman] Dave Odom had been preparing each of them with individual calls prior to that saying that there's a strong likelihood. They had a few questions about logistics and protocols and practice schedules and locations, but nothing that we hadn't already anticipated and had the plan in place [for]. It was a very easy transition. I think it actually, because of the issues in Hawaii, people were not going to come because [of] the travel restrictions and the issues that were taking place over there. So I think we're gonna see a few people who wouldn't have gone to Maui because of that be here in Las Vegas.
SI: With several multi-team events happening in Las Vegas this week, were there any added logistical challenges with things like gym space?
TV: It wasn't that big of an issue. Frankly, there's only one Maui Invitational. We feel and so do many others that we are the premier early season tournament, so I'm not really concerned about it. Like we do in Maui on occasion for practices, the teams get one practice in Lahaina Civic Center, they'll get one here at Michelob Ultra Arena. And then we get one at an alternate location. So we worked with some high schools. And that's what we do in Maui as well. Theyll be over at a local high school, and actually, through that high school and the ADs in that conference from those high schools, we're running a ticket offer to thank them for the use and for the ability for our teams to practice. We're excited about it.

SI: Were certainly in a different place than we were last year with COVID-19, but what lessons did you learn from last years success in Asheville and what types of protocols have you put in place to make this tournament a safe one?
TV: The protocols this year are a little bit less than last year, I mean, we were under a complete bubble. When we had the calls with the coaches last year, we got some pushback because they were a little strict, and they were more strict than the guidelines that the NCAA put out. We are happy to say that we were the only early-season tournament, in fact, the only college sports event in 2020 that had no games canceled, no teams canceled, no positive cases. So we felt pretty good about that coming into this year knowing the restrictions would be a little less. We are requiring masks for everybody who comes into the Michelob Ultra Arena. The only people who will not have to wear masks are the 10 players and the three refs on the court. That's the biggest thing from a protocol standpoint in terms of COVID.
SI: What should fans know about this years tournament?
TV: I think our goal this year was to create as much of the Hawaiian and Maui atmosphere as possible. The court is going to be a design that will make you feel like you are in a court in Maui. We connected with a group here called the Las Vegas Hawaiian Civic Club, and they've been wonderful in working with us. Weve got Hawaiian entertainment during the games, halftime, timeouts, those kinds of things. When we're in Maui, we do a traditional Hawaiian prayer to kick off the tournament, and we're going to do that here. The Hawaiian Anthem will be sung like we do when we're in Maui. So we're keeping the feel of Maui here in Las Vegas. I think that's the thing that maybe the regular fans just [dont] get. They might expect we're just going to come in and put on the games and get out. But that's not how we operate. We want people to have the look, the feel, the excitement of the Maui Invitational as they would if they were in Maui.
SI: What do the final 72 hours or so before the tournament tips off look like?
TV: Operationally, one of the things that's keeping us up a little bit, there's a boxing match over at the Michelob Ultra Arena [on Saturday]. So we take the court at like four in the morning and start decking it out, including the detailing, the banner hanging, all those kinds of things. And while all that's happening, we get teams practicing too. So there's a lot of logistics involved, but like I said, I think our team is the best in the industry and I'm very confident that they'll have it ready to rock and roll.

Cleveland Browns Will Host Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday in Week 15 – Sports Illustrated
Posted: at 4:21 pm
The Cleveland Browns knew they had a week 15 matchup with the Las Vegas Raiders, they just didnt know what day or time. It is now known that the two AFC teams will face off on December 18th, which is a Saturday night.
Cleveland and Las Vegas will face-off in northeast Ohio at 4:30 p.m. Both teams are alive in the NFL playoff race and this matchup could be important in the wild card. This game will be a part of a double-header on NFL network. The second game is a matchup between the Indianapolis Colts and New England Patriots and it is scheduled for 8:20 p.m.
Cleveland hosts the Baltimore Ravens in the second of back-to-back games the Sunday before the Raiders game. Cleveland does have an off week between the Ravens games, but will host the Raiders on a short week in week 15.
Browns are currently sixth in the wild card race and the Raiders are seventh. The top three teams advance to the playoffs. So, this Saturday game between the two teams could have some meaning in week 15 of a 17 game season.
By this late in the season teams will have an idea of what their fate could be when it comes to the playoffs. One or both of these teams could be playing must-win football.
