Dustin Poirier looks to cap journey by winning title at UFC 269 – Las Vegas Review-Journal
Posted: at 6:57 pm
Lightweight star Dustin Poirier rattles off a list of some of his favorite champions in UFC history.
Its not the traditional whos who of megastars.
Michael Bisping. Robbie Lawler. Even Charles Oliveira.
The common thread between them is their journeys to the top were filled with potholes and detours.
There is a list of guys that for me it was very special when they won the belt, Poirier said. Underdogs. Of course, everyone battles adversity. But the guys who were counted out a couple times and still made it happen. Im trying to add my name to that list this weekend.
Poirier will challenge Oliveira for the lightweight belt in the main event of UFC 269 on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena.
Some guys come in and burst on the scene, UFC president Dana White said. These two have been grinding and working hard for a very long time. Theyre two blue-collar guys.
Both fighters had been in the UFC for more than a decade before their first title shots. Oliveiras run included a stretch of four losses in six bouts before a current nine-fight winning streak, capped by a knockout of Michael Chandler in May that secured his first belt.
Poiriers first shot at a belt came in his 22nd UFC fight when he won the interim crown in 2019 only to lose the unification bout to Khabib Nurmagomedov later that year.
The 32-year-old has reeled off three straight victories since, including two wins over Conor McGregor that secured his legacy and financial future.
Now he wants more.
If I can become the world champion on Saturday night, then Ive done it all in the sport, Poirier said. Everything Ive set out to do. Ive set my family up in a good position financially. I have other businesses outside of fighting. But I have to check that box. Thats forever. None of this was done in vain regardless of what happens Saturday night, but it just cements everything that we thought when I first put on the gloves and started this journey.
That journey began when he was 18 with his then-girlfriend and now wife Jolie driving him up Interstate 49 from his native Lafayette, Louisiana, to an amateur show in Arkansas.
They might not have chatted about one day winning a UFC title on that drive, but that dream started coming more and more into focus as he tore through the amateur ranks and turned pro at age 20.
Poirier steadily climbed the ranks only to experience a setback each time he started to get close to title contention.
He thinks those losses shaped not only who he is as a competitor but also a person. Poirier, who dropped out of high school in the ninth grade, has several successful business ventures and runs a charity that has made a major impact in his community. He hopes an auction of his fight gear from Saturday will provide 300,000 meals for underserved people in Louisiana.
Its been a beautiful journey, he said. A learning experience that helped me become the fighter I am but also the person I am. I just hope I can pass on these lessons learned to my daughter and other fighters in the future. Its more than fighting; its life lessons, and Im happy with the person Ive become.
Jolie, the vice president and director of the Good Fight Foundation, has been there since that first road trip. He credits her for talking him out of quitting on several occasions.
Its one of the reasons Poirier is looking forward to Sunday even more than Saturday.
When I do think about it, I think about the next day, he said of the fight. Not the moment, but the next day when I can exhale. Ill win the fight, do media, go back to the hotel still in the rush of madness. But when I get on the plane with my wife and daughter and I can exhale, nobody is asking questions, I can hold the belt and my family. Thats what I think about. And I cant wait to see what it feels like.
The fight headlines a 7 p.m. pay-per-view card that also features a womens bantamweight title bout between Julianna Pena and champion Amanda Nunes. Preliminary bouts begin at 3:15.

Here’s What Damian Lillard Tweeted About The Las Vegas Raiders On Sunday – Sports Illustrated
Posted: December 7, 2021 at 5:25 am
All-Star point guard Damian Lillard sent out a tweet about the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, and his post can be seen embedded below from his Twitter account.
It's no surprise that Lillard is a Raiders fan, because he is from Oakland, California, where the team used to play.
On Sunday, the Raiders lost to the Washington Football Team 17-15 in Nevada.
Meanwhile, Lillard is currently missing time due to an abdominal injury (see tweet below from the Trail Blazers).
The Trail Blazers are currently 11-13 in their first 24 games of the 2021-22 season, and got blown out by the Boston Celtics on Saturday 145-117 in Oregon.
They will play their next game on Monday night against the Los Angeles Clippers at home.
In the last two seasons, the Trail Blazers have lost in the first round of the playoffs.

Las Vegas Raiders: Winners and losers against Washington Football Team – Silver and Black Pride
Posted: at 5:25 am
For all the talk about how this years Las Vegas Raiders team is different, they sure do look the same.
With yesterdays loss to the Washington Football Team, the Raiders have now lost four out of their last five games and their playoff hopes are dwindling. If they do end up watching the postseason - which seems very likely - it will make the third year in a row the team started the season off hot, only to flame out down the stretch. Granted, this years collapse started with a 5-2 record, and the previous seasons started at 6-4, so I guess 2021 technically is different.
Anyway, enough of that rant and lets move on to Las Vegas winners and losers from Sunday.
With Darren Waller out of the lineup, the Raiders needed someone within the receiving corps - multiple people really - to step up and Hunter Renfrow did exactly that.
Renfrow was targeted 10 times yesterday and caught nine passes for 102 yards, making it the first time hes cracked triple-digit receiving yards in back-to-back games since Weeks 16 and 17 of his rookie season. Of his nine receptions, seven went for first downs, which ranks tied for second among receivers so far this week, to go along with a 109.2 passer rating when targeted and two forced missed tackles. Also, 81.7 PFF receiving grade is currently good enough for sixth-best at the position.
To be honest, we should come to expect this from the three-year pro at this point. Hes become one of the most reliable offensive players on the team and is emerging as one of the best slot receivers in the NFL. PFF has him as the sixth-highest graded slot receiver for the entire year, and hes only 240 yards away from being the organizations first 1,000-yard wide receiver since 2016 when Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree broke that mark.
In a year thats been filled with inconsistency, the third-down slot machine seems like one of the players - and maybe only player - to show up and produce week in and week out.
Staying with Las Vegas wideouts, well flip the script and talk about underperforming one, Zay Jones.
Jones was targeted six times and only managed to have three catches for 21 yards against the Football Team. Beyond a middling stat line, its the missed opportunities that he left on the field which were the most infuriating.
With about 2:30 remaining in the game, the Raiders had a third and seven from the Football Teams 18, and Carr targeted Jones on a corner route. The pass fell incomplete and Las Vegas settled for a field goal that proved to be the difference between winning and losing.
Carr put the ball in a good spot, towards the back of the endzone and away from the defenders, but Jones started running with his hands out when the ball was in the air instead of showing them late, which slowed him down. Continuing to run your route and flashing hands as late as possible is just wide receiver 101.
Even so, the five-year vet had another opportunity to put the game away on a deep bomb at the end of the game. Complain about the lack of a pass interference penalty all you want, but the ball hit him in the shoulder and should have been caught as his ball tracking continues to be an issue.
Its the little things that hes not executing that are making the difference which is more frustrating since hes been in the league for several years now.
When Henry Ruggs was released, Jones had a perfect opportunity to emerge as a potential top target moving forward for the Silver and Black, however, he has proven to be the exact opposite. In Weeks 1-7, he was targeted seven times for six receptions, 115 yards and one touchdown. Since then, hes had a larger volume of targets with 22 but only has 11 catches for 142 yards and zero touchdowns, not the production the Raiders are looking for or need.
What might have been the biggest surprise of the day for Las Vegas is Brandon Parker played arguably his best game of the season.
He earned an overall grade of 75.5 from PFF and had marks of 73.5 as a run blocker and 75.4 in pass protection. While those numbers may not seem all that impressive, his overall and run-blocking grades are the second-highest hes had this season and thats the highest pass protection grade hes received.
Granted, Parker did give up a sack but that was the only pressure he surrendered and it came on a longer developing pass play where he lost late in the rep. Also, this was just the second game in the last six that he wasnt called for a penalty.
The fourth-year pro still has a lot to prove in these last five contests to stick around next year, but yesterday was certainly a step in the right direction. The real and more difficult test will come next week when he lines up across from Melvin Ingram, Frank Clark and the red-hot Cheifs defense.
When Rich Bisaccia took over as interim head coach, he entered a uniquely favorable position. Most of the time when someone takes over midseason, theyre inheriting a bad team with no shot to make the playoffs and its the new coachs job to just get everyone through the season.
However, Bisaccia took over a squad with a winning record and a roster that was primed for a postseason push, only to fall to .500 and seemingly lose any hopes at making the tournament.
To make matters worse, he was quoted after the game by The Athletics Jimmy Durkin saying: If youre results-oriented all the time, then youre just looking at the scoreboard and spending your life up there.
That statement would be fine if Bisaccia was a traditional interim head coach of a young team that had a losing record, but again, that isnt the case. Its almost like he doesnt realize hes interviewing for the full-time job and winning games is exactly how hed land the gig.
But beyond the man in charge, yesterday was an absolute failure by the coaching staff.
Greg Olsons offense has now scored more than 16 points just once in the last five games, and even Gus Bradley doesnt have much of a leg to stand on after the defense failed to keep Washington off the scoreboard on their two-minute drive.
At the end of the day, its pretty telling that the Raiders consistently and significantly play better on short weeks than longer ones, as they had 10 days to prepare for the Football Team. With more time to game plan, coaching plays a bigger factor in the game and the Silver and Black dont seem to have the upper hand in that department, regardless of the opponent.
Its been a quiet first season for Divine Deablo. Heading into yesterdays game, he had only recorded 27 defensive snaps and four total tackles on the year. However, an injury to Cory Littleton catapulted the rookie into more playing time on Sunday and he was able to take advantage of the extra reps.
Deablo took 38 snaps on defense against Washington and was Las Vegas' second-leading tackler with 11 in total, one tackle behind Denzel Perryman for the team lead.
Against the run is where the Virginia Tech product shined the most. He earned a 72.4 grade in that department, tied for 11th among Week 13 linebackers, and registered two run stops at a 12.5 percent rate, ranking tied for 14th and 12th at the position, respectively. Thats especially impressive considering he was coming off the bench cold.
Now, Deablo did struggle in coverage a bit. He allowed four of four targets to be completed for 51 yards and a passer rating of 118.8 while earning a 51.7 coverage grade, so theres still some room for growth. However, one of those four completions did result in another defensive stop, meaning it wasnt like he was completely lost in coverage.
Also, shoutout to Malcolm Koonce who played in his first regular-season game and got his first NFL sack. If theres one silver lining from yesterdays game, its that the Raiders got some significant contributions from their younger players.
Heading into the game, I was very worried about how John Simpon would hold up against the likes of Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne, and it turns out my fear was warranted.
Simpson gave up four pressures, which is tied for the most hes surrendered in a single game and is tied for the fifth-most among guards this week, and he earned a 94.0 pass-blocking efficiency rating, the sixth-lowest at the position. To make matters worse, of the four pressures, one was a sack and the other was a QB hit so its safe to say he didnt do his job to protect Carr.
Even as a run blocker, the 2020 fourth-round pick struggled to hold his own. He earned a 40.2 run-blocking grade from PFF, which is his lowest mark since Week 2 and the third-worst among guards for the week.
The Raiders will likely be in the interior offensive linemen market this offseason and Simpson is running the risk of having his spot taken if he continues to play like this.

Tough Enough Pink, the western community's campaign to fight breast cancer, celebrates its 17th anniversary
Tough Enough to Wear Pink was founded in 2004 by Terry Wheatley, wife and mother of former professional rodeo cowboys Jim and Wade Wheatley, and a breast cancer survivor herself and Karl Stressman, former director of special events for Wrangler and former Commissioner of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). The idea was to spark a western community movement to help families facing breast cancer. Tough Enough to Wear Pink night was launched at the WNFR with competitors and fans alike sporting pink to show their support. The idea was an instant hit, and rodeo committees across the country were asking how they could bring the campaign to their own hometowns.
Tough Enough to Wear Pink offers planning, marketing, promotional and merchandising support to rodeo committees to host events in their own communities. The money raised stays in the community to promote early detection and mammograms, provide transportation to medical appointments, support local clinics and hospitals and offer assistance to families.
"It's truly a grassroots effort," explained founder Terry Wheatley. "I'm humbled and couldn't be prouder to be part of it."
Terry Wheatley also is the President of Vintage Wine Estates, a leading wine company. A wine she created, Purple Cowboy, gives back 100% of its profits to Tough Enough to Wear Pink. Purple Cowboy is the Official Wine of the Professional Rodeo Cowboy's Association.
Other generous sponsors include: Wrangler, Montana Silversmiths, Twisted X, Cinch Jeans and Las Vegas Events.
Each year, Tough Enough to Wear Pink recognizes the leading fundraising Tough Enough to Wear Pink events. This year, the number one rodeo honor goes to Cattlemen's Days TETWP. This tenacious group raised over $600,000 that stayed in their hometown. Other notable fundraisers includes TETWP of Montana, The Cowboy's for Cancer Research and Twin Falls TETWP.
About Tough Enough To Wear Pink?
TETWP was created by entrepreneur and breast cancer survivor Terry Wheatley along with Karl Stressman to bring the sport of professional rodeo and the western community together to rally against breast cancer. Since its inception in 2004, TETWP has empowered rodeos in the U.S. and Canada to focus attention on the need for a cure. To date, the campaign has raised $37 million for breast cancer charities, most of which stays right in the local communities. The grassroots movement has inspired other sports communities to mount their own TETWP campaigns, spreading a message of hope and support that reaches beyond the rodeo arena to competitors, families and fans across America. The 16 Best Bakeries and Pie Shops in Las Vegas – Thrillist

You could easily light up your Instagram feed with the photogenic doughnuts and beignets of Saint Honor, but the recipes are backed up by some serious ingredients, including Tahitian vanilla bean and French Valrhona chocolate. The brioche dough is buttery and cake-likenot sticky sweet. Everything is made from scratch daily, including glazes, while taking temperature and other day-to-day variances into account. Between baking, decorating, and service, the shop is a full 24-hour operation. The "couture" line reinvents lemon tarts, tiramisu, and other traditional desserts in doughnut form, embellished with meringue horns, nuts, and gold flakes. The beignets, served three to an order, are fried lightly for a soft and chewy outer layer. The bombolonis are round Italian pastries made with ricotta and a combo of lemon and orange zest for a soft and sweet crunch. Shakes have similar over-the-top presentations, although it's hard to argue with a simple cup of La Colombe coffee with oat milk, cinnamon, and honey. How to order: Place an order onlinefor pickup (and grab a pizza too, since Saint Honor is also home to the Pizza Anonymous ghost kitchen).

Macau And Las Vegas Gaming Revenues Are Headed In Opposite Directions: What’s Next? – Benzinga – Benzinga
Posted: at 5:25 am
Las Vegas, Nevada, and Macau, China, are two of the largest global casino gambling hubs. Both gaming destinations took big hits during the COVID-19 pandemic, but the latest gross gaming revenue numbers suggest Vegas is bouncing back strong while Macau is still struggling.
The Numbers: Many Americans think of Vegas as the top gambling destination, but Macaus gross gaming revenue dwarfs Las Vegas. Unfortunately for Macau investors, its gross gaming revenue is still roughly 70% below 2019 levels, according to Bank of America analyst Shaun Kelley. Meanwhile, Las Vegas GGR is up 30% from pre-pandemic 2019 levels, suggesting the worst of the pandemic is now in the rear-view mirror.

On Monday, Kelley said he models fourth-quarter Las Vegas GGR growth of 17% for MGM Resorts International (NYSE:MGM) and 10% for Caesars Entertainment Inc (NASDAQ:CZR) compared to the fourth quarterof 2019. Meanwhile, Kelley is also modeling fourth-quarter Macau GGR tobe down roughly 60% from 2019 levels for Las Vegas Sands Corp. (NYSE:LVS) and Wynn Resorts, Limited (NASDAQ:WYNN).
Macau Headwinds: In addition to sluggish gaming revenues, Macau is also suffering from negative investor sentiment after 10 casino junket officials were recently arrested.
This development, in our view, is more of a crackdown/intervention risk than the concession process from back in September, but is yet another example of the 3 Cs (COVID, crackdown and concession) risks that make Macau difficult for investors at the moment, Kelley said following the arrests.
Prior to COVID-19, VIP gaming represented 46% of Macaus total gross gaming revenue, Kelley said. As of the third quarter, that percentage had dropped to 34%.
Benzingas Take: Gaming investors looking for less risk in the space should take a closer look at U.S. stocks that have no exposure to Macau. Kelley recently named several of his top gaming stock picks heading into 2022, including Boyd Gaming Corporation (NYSE:BYD), Churchill Downs, Inc. (NASDAQ:CHDN) and Caesars Entertainment.

Security, intimacy and money: why Adele is going to Las Vegas – The Guardian
Posted: at 5:25 am
Las Vegas shows once conjured images of early-bird dinner specials, corny magicians and Cole Porter standards sung to happily clapping coach parties. But with another of the worlds biggest pop stars signing on to perform in the city, namely Adele, the Vegas concert residency is further cemented as a glamorous and lucrative rite of pop passage.
Her fourth album, 30, released last month, became the biggest-selling album of the year in the US after just three days on sale. That is the kind of popularity that warrants a stadium tour indeed, she played to nearly 3 million punters across the 120-show stretch of her previous 2017-2018 world tour.
But for her Vegas residency, every Friday and Saturday between 21 January and 16 April at the Colosseum in the Caesars Palace casino, she will play to about 4,000 people a night. Tickets are so sought-after that they are likely to all be bought by registered fans Ticketmaster has advised there may be none on general sale.
It used to be that these relatively intimate shows were a sign of an artist in their twilight years, epitomised by Elvis Presley: his early 70s Vegas shows were rejuvenating and iconic, but by the middle of the decade he was overweight, drug-addicted and isolated.
For years, it was where careers go to die youre near the end when you go to Vegas, says James Hanley, the news editor at live music industry publication IQ. But that has definitely shifted in the 21st century. Cline Dion was a gamechanging moment when she came in, in 2003. Then there was the rise of the superstar DJ the likes of Calvin Harris and the Chainsmokers had very lucrative residencies. And then in 2013 Britney Spears kicked off a wave of younger pop artists like Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga.
The city has retained a cachet throughout, successfully curating its image as a debauched yet classy pleasure spot. Its the entertainment capital of the United States, super-easy to fly into, so its a great destination [for live music], says Greg Parmley, the chief executive of music trade body Live.
Theres a great heritage there, going back to the days of the Rat Pack, Hanley adds, making a residency a bucket-list thing for a lot of artists.
It adds up to an obvious choice for Adele. Las Vegas is fairly close to her home base of Los Angeles, where she co-parents her son Angelo with her ex-husband Simon Konecki, and she has said, even on stage, that she is not well suited to touring vast venues. Particularly on 30, her music is intimate and conversational, and her famed repartee on stage evokes the standup comedians who are also big draws in Las Vegas: this material works best when you can see the whites of your audiences eyes.
Adele admits she doesnt like touring instead, she can be situated in one place for weeks on end, so that solves that issue, Hanley says. It wasnt like she felt out of place in Wembley stadium, but the more natural home of the music is the sort of environment you have in Vegas.
The other draw, of course, is the money. The sums can be enormous: Cline Dions pair of residencies between 2003-2007 and 2011-2019 generated $681m (514m) in ticket sales, and under the terms of her current deal which began in 2017, she will earn $272m from concerts in Vegas until 2026.
But greater revenues can still be generated through touring venues with larger capacities, and Parmley says the attraction of Vegas ultimately comes down to the lifestyle of the artist. If they are at a point in their life, be it due to family or career, where they dont want to be on the road, Vegas offers an opportunity to have a stable base and still be performing every few nights. Its not for everybody, but it will certainly suit some artists.
He adds: Its much easier to maintain the quality of the show, as opposed to when youre touring and youre loading the production into a new building every night. [A Vegas residency] allows the production to be as good as it possibly can be.
Other big stars are currently preparing Vegas jaunts. Katy Perrys residency Play begins on 29 December, and Jennifer Lopez is expected to return after her All I Have residency in 2016, saying earlier this year: Ive been offered that option I just cant wait to get back to doing that. The combination of security, remuneration and intimacy means that artists, to borrow the citys fabled motto, tend to stay in Vegas.
