CCSD, Las Vegas authorities respond to viral TikTok challenge threatening school shootings – KTNV Las Vegas

Posted: December 17, 2021 at 10:52 am

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) Yet another TikTok challenge is being taken to the extreme.

On Friday, schools and police nationwide, including here in Las Vegas, are monitoring a threat made over the mobile app calling today "national shoot up your school day.

The Clark County School District released a statement addressing the challenge.

CCSD is aware of some social media trends and rumors that can create disruptions on our campuses and the surrounding community. Please know that all threats are taken seriously and will be dealt with appropriately. Please talk to your children about the serious consequences of making threats to the school, said a spokesperson for the school district.

The origin of the post is still being investigated, but many districts are now taking precautions, especially in the wake of the deadly school shooting in Michigan last month.

I think that kids would not come up with the stuff on their own. They have to get the ideas from somewhere. Were just all shaking our heads, telling ourselves we can get through it but its harder than its ever been, said Autumn Tampa, a Zoom tutor for CCSD.

Police and school officials are pleading with parents to not repost any of these threats. If there is a serious concern, they ask that you contact 911.

The Doobie Brothers add Las Vegas dates to anniversary tour: ‘We don’t take it for granted’ – USA TODAY

Posted: at 10:52 am

The Doobie Brothers will be takin it to the Strip in the spring when the classic rock behemoths unveil a limited engagement in Las Vegas.

The shows, which begin May 13, represent a do-over for the band. A spate of dates in February 2020 was terminated after a couple of performances when singer/guitarist Tom Johnston was felled by an illness he now believes was an early bout of COVID-19.

The Doobie Brotherswill commandeer the Zappos Theater at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino for eight dates: May 13-14; 18; 20-21; 25 and 27-28. Tickets are on sale Dec. 17 at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET via ticketmaster.com/DoobieBrothersVegas. Various pre-sales will be available Dec. 15-16.

Sting in Vegas: The British rock icon snags a residency

In October, the band wrapped the first part of its 50thanniversary tour rescheduled from 2020 which featured the return of smoky-voiced singer/keyboardist Michael McDonald.

McDonald will join Johnston, guitarist Pat Simmons and guitarist/multi-instrumentalist John McFee for the Las Vegas dates.

Johnston and McDonald spoke to USA TODAY in separate interviews to share their anticipation about being stationedin the vibrant entertainment city for a couple of weeks.

Q: What are you looking forward to about playing in Las Vegas?

Michael McDonald: Im kind of excited about it because were making some adjustments as we go. (Keyboardist) Bill Paynewont be with us(next year)because of his commitments with Little Feat, and nobody is sadder than me about that. So Im readjusting my keyboardposition. (Vegas) will be fun, anyway, but it's also a chance to get a jump on whatever changes I need to bring to the summer dates.

Q: This is a limited engagement, rather than a full-fledged residency. Would you ever consider doing something more long-term?

Tom Johnston: I dont know about a few months anywhere, but thats just me. Thats a long time to be in one place, like country artists in Branson, Missouri. I like to travel. I like the idea of being in a different town every night. You see a lot more people that way, and I like to travel internationally, though all of that has a big question mark on it right now.

Q: Do you like Vegas in general?

Johnston: Its a neat place. I dont go to Vegas a lot on my own, but I dont go many places! But there are a lot of a great shows there.

McDonald:I never disliked Vegas, but I never really felt it was a place we would spend a lot of time. When I was playing clubs in L.A., a lot of those guys would go to Vegas and play in the lounges there to get a good-paying gig. In many cases back then, the hotels would comp you on everything. If you went anywhere in town, even a coffee shop on the Strip, if they knew you were working, you'd get the receipt andthe hotel would comp your meal.

Q: So not really a gambler?

Johnston: (Laughs) We used to gamble on the plane in the 70s, fooling around on the floor with a deck of cards, but thats about it.

McDonald: No, not at all.I find that anything that has the slightest potential for addiction is not something I should be doing. I could get addicted to chocolate milk.

More residencies: Usher talks playing the Las Vegas Strip

Q: These shows tend to be condensed to get people back onto the casino floor. You have a catalog that is not easily condensed. What do you think you will you do, set-wise?

Johnston: Thats a very good question. Ill have to think about that and figure out how to pare down the length of the set. Its been great being back on the road. This tour was beyond-my-dreams successful. Not only were the shows packed every night, but to have Michael with us and the crowd responding to songs form all eras…especially after that year that went nowhere. Were also playing new music off the most recent release ("Libert"), so well probably play a couple of additional (new) songs plus what we were doing on the road.

Q: You have these Vegas concerts in May and then the rest of the tour and some makeup dates in June. What does the rest of 2022 look like for the band?

Johnston:Assuming everything goes OK in the medical end of the world, were booked all the way through the fall and with Michael.

Q: Michael, what has being back with The Doobie Brothers meant to you?

McDonald:Its that sensation that it feels so natural; it doesnt feel like it's much different than it ever was. Our friendships have always existed, so its almost like weve always been doing it. But on the other hand, weve grown because of it. When you spend the better part of a month together at any given time, weve been able to sit around and reminisce about a lot of stuff. I was talking to John (McFee) about howat our age, playing these venues still and getting to go out and tour like this, thats something we dont take for granted.

Mystre nears its 28th anniversary in Las Vegas still spinning heads – KNPR

Posted: December 10, 2021 at 6:57 pm

Its the original Cirque du Soleil Las Vegas spectacular: Mystre.

The show at itseponymous 1,600-seat theater at Treasure Island remains one of the top draws in Las Vegas, packing the house even after nearly 30 years. Its international cast of 65 onstage artists combines aerial acrobatics, music, dance, comedy, and drama.

Mystre, which opened on Christmas Day in 1993, is also a crown jewel of a global brand of entertainment that reshaped the Strip, where five Cirque du Soleil shows have returned from pandemic hiatus.

And while Mystre is nearing 30, a Cirque du Soleil executive said the show has endured because it stays fresh.

We've done a really great job at making sure that it stays relevant. It stays shiny, it stays exciting over the years, said Tim Smith, senior artistic director for Cirque. I keep an eye on the show nightly for quality, but I also keep an eye on the show with my colleagues to see if its time to put in a new act? Is it time to put new music in?

Cirque du Soleil has spent 2021 revving its shows, which on the Strip include O and the Beatles LOVE, after a pandemic-forced shutdown.

I've been in live entertainment my whole life, and this pandemic that we've all experienced was like none other, Smith said. I've never seen our industry completely shut down.

He said Cirque deserves credit for pioneering a return to entertainment before many other productions.

We were the first live entertainment company to open its doors, Smith said. There was no Live Nation. There was no New York City Opera.

Performers such as Magalie Drolet, who has been a Cirque acrobat for 28 years, had worked out at home to be ready to return to the stage.

She said it was important during the downtime to keep in shape, keep moving, keep exercising just taking care of myself and crossing my fingers that we were going to reopen.

Droletsaid that even as one of the more veteran performers she remains passionate about her work.

When you love what you're doing, it's not difficult to just go out there and do it, she said, adding that she credits her longevity also to taking better care of herself now than when she was younger.

Now I focus more on me what I eat; work out every day; my sleep is important, she said. Age is just a number.

Drolet came to Las Vegas from near Montreal, not far from where a group of street performers and founding executivesGuy Lalibert, Gilles Ste-Croix, and Daniel Gauthier createdCirque du Soleil in the 1980s.

The Flamingo, which ushered in Las Vegas glamour and gangsters, turns 75 – KNPR

Posted: at 6:57 pm

From Bugsy Siegel to Donny and Marie, the Flamingo has seen a lot in its 75 years on the Strip.

On Dec. 26, 1946, mobster Siegel opened the Flamingo after taking over construction of the property when original developer Billy Wilkerson ran out of money.

Siegel named the property after his girlfriend Virginia Hill whose nickname was The Flamingo because of her red hair and long legsand it ushered in the era of Vegas glamour, gambling, and gangsters. Siegel never saw the success of the Flamingo, dying in a hail of assassins bullets less than a year later.

Michael Green, an associate professor of history at UNLV, said the case remains unsolved because there are so many suspects, from fellow mobsters he cheated to Hill's brother, who was angry at how he treated her.

I think it's almost like, to give away a spoiler, Murder on the Orient Express," where a fictional detective is presented with a train full of people with motives for murder, Green said.

Fellow historian Larry Gragg, author of a biography of Segel, said while the identity of the killer or killers remains unknown, a group of mob-connected individuals showed up at the Flamingo minutes after Siegel was slain 280 miles away in Los Angeles and announced they were in charge.

That tells me it is a well-crafted hit, Gragg told State of Nevada, but I still do not know with certainty who the shooter was and what the motive was. I just know it was very well defined.

He said that had the casino been luckier, it might have avoided the financial problems it encountered in the months leading up to Siegel's death.

"The casino was beautiful, it had all the amenities you would want, but the gamblers were winning not the house," he said.

Gragg is scheduled to take part in a panel discussion about the history of the Flamingo on Tuesday evening at the Mob Museum. The event is sold out but can be streamed here.

The Flamingohas gone through a succession of owners since Siegel's untimely departure, and it become part of the Caesars Entertainment family in 2005.

Its showroom opened with Jimmy Durante and has played host to everyone from Judy Garland to the Rat Pack to Ella Fitzgerald to Foreigner to, of course, Wayne Newton, a longtime fixture. Tom Jones recorded a live album there in 1968, and siblings Donnyand Marie Osmond ended an 11-year residency at the Flamingo in 2019.

I-Team: Mother sentenced in case of young sons disappearance in North Las Vegas in 1986 – KLAS – 8 News Now

Posted: at 6:57 pm

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) Amy Fleming, the mother of a boy who disappeared 35 years ago in Las Vegas, was sentenced Friday morning to two years in prison. She pleaded guilty in August to voluntary manslaughter in the case.

The child, 3-year-old Francillon Pierre, was reported missing in 1986. Fleming, and her then-boyfriend Mahaleel Lee Luster, were always suspected of being involved in the disappearance of the child. They told police they lost sight of him at the Broad Acres Swap Meet in North Las Vegas. The couple raised suspicion about a month after his disappearance when they were seen selling his toys. Also, the year before the boy was reported missing, there were child abuse charges against the couple.

A letter Fleming had written to Luster was used as a key piece of evidence to charge Fleming with murder. A plea deal was reached to lower the charge to manslaughter.

Fleming entered a plea known as an Alford plea, which means she acknowledged the state had enough evidence to prove her guilt in the case but she doesnt admit she is guilty. She has already served 471 days.

Fleming and Luster have both served jail time in the past associated with the case for lying to police. Luster has never been charged in the boys disappearance.

Francillon Pierres body has never been found.

5 2022 free agents the Las Vegas Raiders must go after this offseason – Just Blog Baby

The Las Vegas Raiders have a lot of work to do in terms of the roster this offseason, and here are five pending free agents they must go after.

It has been an up and down season for the 2021 Las Vegas Raiders, and it just may get worse before it can get better. This is a team that has been through a ton this year, both on and off the field, and it is starting to look like another season of them on the outside looking in at the playoffs.

This weekend, they head to Arrowhead Stadium, which has been a house of horrors for Derek Carr throughout his time as the starting quarterback for the Silver and Black. Las Vegas did beat Kansas City last season, but that was a different set of circumstances, as it was earlier in the year, and there were no fans in the stands.

For Las Vegas to get their season back on track, it could take a miracle, as they play a plethora of tough AFC teams down the stretch. They have gone on a few runs this season already, but with the way they looked last weekend against the Washington Football Team, this season could be going off the rails.

Here, we look at five pending free agents that the Raiders have to take a shot at this offseason.

Zappos & Las Vegas Community Will Pay Tribute to Tony Hsieh This Weekend – Footwear News

Posted: at 6:57 pm

Zappos and the Las Vegas community will pay tribute to the late legend Tony Hsieh tomorrow and into Sunday morning on what would have been his 48th birthday.

Tony Hsiehs Community Celebration of Life is just that a way for the community he loved to honor his legacy, said Scott Schaefer, Zappos interim leader and VP of Finance. Zappos is coming together with DTP Companies and The City of Las Vegas, all entities he made an everlasting impact on, to encourage the human connections Tony valued through creating fun, and maybe a little weirdness, in Downtown Las Vegas, the city he called home.

During the day, Zappos will host an invitation-only, in-person event from 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. PT at its downtown campus, which will also be livestreamed here.

It will include a renaming of Zappos council chambers, which will now be known as the Tony Hsieh Theater. The event also will mark the launch of the Tony Hsieh Award hosted by TED Talk speaker Keith Ferrazzi as well a series of short inspirational talks.

Hsiehs close friends and former Zappos execs Fred Mossler and Alfred Lin will take part in the event as well as Jewel, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and other big names.

At night, the action will shift to the Downtown Container Park which Hsieh opened in 2012 as part of his wide-ranging Downtown Project.

The e-commerce and entrepreneurial visionary died last November in Connecticut following injuries sustained in a house fire.

For the full details of this weekends events, go here.
