Where to get the best caviar in Las Vegas – Houston Chronicle

Posted: March 3, 2022 at 12:07 am

The connoisseur class knows all too well that Las Vegas is a wonderland for anything and everything in the culinary realm. The citys top restaurants offer high-roller dining with gourmet foodie pleasures from around the world and that includes caviar.

The recent opening of the new Caviar Bar at Resorts World ushers in a new level of sturgeon roe indulgence. Heres where to get the best, most luscious presentations of prized pearls in Vegas.

Michelin-starred chef Shaun Hergatt has opened a jewel box restaurant and bar at Resorts World Las Vegas, offering indulgent plates of cured meats, oysters, crudos, cheeses and seafood dishes. But Hergatts selections of Kaluga, Golden Ossetra and Sevruga are the stars, served with traditional accompaniments ($275-$350). The high design in dark, gleaming, caviar colors sends this experience over the top. 3000 S. Las Vegas Blvd.; caviarbarlv.com

One of the citys favorite chefs returns with a sumptuous new restaurant in Virgin Hotels Las Vegas. The seasonal Mediterranean menu shows English at his most accomplished, including a starter of griddled honey cake topped with olive oil crme frache and Sevruga caviar ($30). 4455 Paradise; virginhotelslv.com

The menu may pay homage to Old World Italian flavors but the experience at this Spiegelworld-produced experience at Cosmopolitan Las Vegas is decidedly new. Expect wall-to-wall eye candy, music and interactive entertainment as you sup on a white clam pie topped with bacon, scallions, lemon and Ossetra caviar ($39). 3708 S. Las Vegas Blvd.; superfrico.com

The vintage supper club inside Wynn Las Vegas aims to take social dining to a new level (although the no photo policy is deliciously anti-social media). The gorgeous interiors provide the perfect frame for the menus Russian Ossetra caviar service ($225), as well as the smoked salmon potato latke dotted with caviar and crme frache ($38). 3131 S. Las Vegas Blvd.; wynnlasvegas.com

The legendary French chefs eponymous restaurant at Caesars Palace just introduced a new dish, Caviar and Langoustine: lobster-like prawn marinated in citrus, lemongrass and kafir leaf served with pickled mango, chutney, caviar and langoustine consomm with miso. Regal dining, for sure. 3570 S. Las Vegas Blvd.; caesars.com

Wolfgang Pucks steakhouse at The Venetian Resort Las Vegas offers caviar lovers two options: Russian Kaluga hybrid ($135) and Israeli Ossetra ($155) presented with traditional accompaniments. Pair the caviar with oysters or seafood tower sea gems and you have a truly high-roller starter. 3355 S. Las Vegas Blvd.; venetianlasvegas.com

Superchef Thomas Keller founded his own caviar company, Regiis Ova, to provide the highest quality, affordable, sustainable farmed caviar. And thats what youll find at his signature restaurant at The Venetian Resort Las Vegas: Ossetra, $110; hybrid, $95; Supreme, $78 (per ounce). 3355 S. Las Vegas Blvd.; venetianlasvegas.com

This see-and-be-seen lair off the lobby of Bellagio Resort & Casino serves bubbles and caviar nibbles from what many consider to be the finest purveyor of sturgeon roe. In addition to many straight caviar choices, the menu also includes caviar tacos, caviar pie and an Ossetra caviar cigar served with the Bellagio Martini. 3600 S. Las Vegas Blvd.; petrossian.com

MISC: NOSFERATUF.W. Murnaus German Expressionist horror film Nosferatu debuted in March 1922. It was an unauthorized, freewheeling adaptation of Bram Stokers novel Dracula, which at the time was only 25 years old. (Putting that into perspective: The first Harry Potter novel turns 25 this year.) Murnau took a few liberties with the source material to disguise its origins, among them changing the name of the title character to Orlok, jettisoning most of its characters and changing the ending. Stokers widow sued to prevent the release of Nosferatu, won the rights to the film and tried to destroy all prints of itan effort that, thankfully, failed.

The Sci Fi Center has screened Nosferatu several times before now, but this is a special occasion: the classic silent films 100th birthday, a proper milestone even for an immortal. Pianist Andrew Tyler will provide live accompaniment to Max Schrecks terrifying performance as the first vampire ever to appear in film. All ages are welcome, though with his razor-sharp teeth and nails, Count Orlok might be a bit much for young children. He might be a little much for some adults, too, but thats the fun of it. 8 p.m., $10, thescificenter.com. Geoff Carter

Las Vegas pediatrician warns parents of expanded baby formula recall – KTNV 13 Action News Las Vegas

Posted: at 12:07 am

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) Abbott Nutrition has expanded its baby formula recall after reports of another infant's death.

The Food and Drug Administration announced in an update on Monday that the recall had been expanded to include one lot of Similac PM 60/40.

On Feb. 17, Abbott initially recalled certain Alimentum, Similac, and EleCare baby formulas made at its Sturgis, Michigan, facility.

Health officials announced the new update after another infant tested positive for Cronobacter sakazakii died.

The FDA said their investigation includes four reports of Cronobacter sakazakii infections in infants (three from FDA complaints and one from a CDC case finding) and one complaint of a Salmonella Newport infection in an infant.

Las Vegas valley pediatrician Dr. Atousa Ghaneian with Healthy Kids Care says shes had to clear her own shelves of the formula.

She says symptoms to look out for include poor feeding, irritability, temperature changes, vomiting, rashes, blood in stool or urine and lethargy.

If your child is experiencing any of those symptoms, Dr. Ghaneian suggests first calling your pediatrician.

If the infant is having some irritability, some rash, have the pediatrician see them that day and examine them. If the baby is very irritable, has consistence of vomiting or rash, a very high fever, they cant get in touch with their pediatrician or sometimes its in the middle of the night or after hours, I would suggest taking them to the emergency room to get fully evaluated, Dr. Ghaneian added.

If you need to clear your shelves, Dr. Ghaneian says you can find similar formulas through other brands that wont upset your babys stomach.

For example, if youre using Similac for spit-up, Enfamil A.R. is a formula thats similar in product and price.

The impacted batches have lot numbers that start with a 22 through 37. If youre not sure whether the formula you have is on the recall list, you can head to SimilacRecall.com to check.

Southwest Airlines Has Great News for Caesars, MGM, and the Las Vegas Strip – TheStreet

Posted: at 12:07 am

In a normal year, the Consumer Electronics Show pushes Las Vegas to capacity. Nearly 200,000 people attend the convention, filling hotels not just on the Las Vegas Strip but pretty much any property in the city.

This year, while CES had an in-person show, many major exhibitors pulled out at the last minute due to a surge in Covid cases. CES happened, but it drew around 15% to 20% of its normal crowd.

Instead of driving prices to rarely seen levels at Strip casinos owned by Caesars Entertainment (CZR) - Get Caesars Entertainment Inc Report and MGM Resorts International (MGM) - Get MGM Resorts International Report, rooms sat empty and casinos were barely populated.

It was a stark reminder that while Las Vegas had reopened for business, business travelers -- an incredibly important group of customers for the casino industry -- had not yet fully come back.

The same script from CES repeated at two other traditionally huge Las Vegas conventions: the auto-related Specialty Equipment Market Association show and World of Concrete. Those shows happened with an in-person component, but attendance was weak and normal had most certainly not returned.

Now, Nevada has lifted its indoor mask mandate and there are signs of life, according to an executive from Southwest (LUV) - Get Southwest Airlines Co. Report Airlines, the biggest airline at Las Vegas's Harry Reid International Airport, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

Las Vegas saw 3.1 million people fly into Reid in January. That's more than double 2020's January passenger count, but not even three-quarters of the 4.2 million in January 2020, essentially the month before the pandemic began.

Dave Harvey, vice president of Southwest Airs business-travel unit, told the Review-Journal that Las Vegas stands well-positioned to make a strong recovery.

Even though business has been really depressed over the past two years, Vegas has actually punched above its weight because even though it hasnt been the large 100,000-person meetings, there have still been a lot of midsize gatherings, Harvey told the Review-Journal's Mike Akers. Those have helped prop Vegas up better than a lot of other markets.

Harvey sees a number of signs that Las Vegas can expect a relatively quick comeback. He noted that shows running safely and the omicron surge fading set the table for a strong second half of 2022 and a full comeback in 2023.

With the latest surge in late December, early January a lot of the January business came off the books and February definitely softened, Harvey said.

But basically in March and on, all of those events and meetings held on. And the ones that pulled back in January and February are saying they cant wait until January and February of 23, so theyre all working to reschedule in any open window in the spring. The spring is going to be very robust."

Caesars and MGM have used the pandemic slowdown to make some big moves to their Las Vegas Strip portfolios. MGM, for example, has sold the operations at the Mirage to Hard Rock International while acquiring the Cosmpolitan.

"With over $500 million of capital invested to upgrade the property since 2014, the Cosmopolitan offers an incredible opportunity to expand our customer base and will provide greater depth of choices for our guests in Las Vegas," MGM Resorts Chief Financial Officer Jonathan Halkyard said in September.

"We believe that we can leverage MGM Resorts' expertise, operating platform and other highly achievable synergies to continue providing best-in-class service while driving growth for the property."

Caesars has not been quiet either. The company has completed major renovations on the entryway to its iconic Caesars Place casino, and it plans to transform its Bally's hotel/casino into its Horseshoe brand.

"At Horseshoe, it's all about the gambler. Since 1951 Horseshoe Casinos have been home to the best odds, highest limits, and biggest jackpots. So, it's fitting that we bring Horseshoe back to Las Vegas, and right on the Las Vegas Strip," Jason Gregorec, general manager of the property, said in a news release.

"Holding to the Horseshoe tradition of providing impeccable service, our guests will see the property transform over time, ensuring we aren't disrupting the excitement while we make the transition."

Bally's/the new Horsehoe sits essentially dead-center on the Las Vegas Strip.

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) A clerk shot a customer who refused to wear a mask before turning the gun on himself in an incident at a Las Vegas gas station.

The shooting happened at the Terribles gas station on Centennial Center Boulevard and Azure Drive around 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 6.

Police received a report that a person was shot and running through the parking lot, according to a report obtained by the 8 News Now I-Team on Wednesday.

Police said the victim had walked into the gas station without wearing a mask on Sunday, Feb. 6, which was several days before Gov. Steve Sisolak lifted Nevadas mask mandate.

Upon entering the store, the clerk told the victim to put on a mask. The victim refused, according to police, and walked up to the counter with items to buy.

The clerk refused to serve the victim, who then walked out of the store without paying for the items, police said,

The clerk then followed the victim outside of the store, recording him with his phone, police said. The two men then began to physically fight when the clerk pulled out a handgun and fired three rounds at the victim, striking him once in the shoulder.

The clerk then shot himself.

The victim was able to drive to a nearby hospital and receive treatment.

If the clerk had survived, he would have been charged with battery with the use of a deadly weapon, police said.

Help is available 24/7 by calling the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.

Las Vegas Raiders: Ranking the top 5 roster needs – Sportsnaut

Posted: at 8:52 am

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Las Vegas Raiders general manager Dave Ziegler and head coach Josh McDaniels dont have to tear down the roster, but they must reload at multiple positions.

Assuming the Raiders sign quarterback Derek Carr to an extension, theyll address the biggest roster question of the offseason, but his offensive line needs upgrades, and the pass-catching group doesnt have enough speed on the perimeter.

By the way, we saw the importance of a solid defense that can get off the field on third downs during Vegas four-game win streak late in the 2021 campaign. The front office will probably have to replace key parts of that unit, specifically the defensive line and on the corner of the secondary.

With free agency about a month away (March 16th), lets go through a ranking of the Raiders top five position needs from least to greatest.

Regardless of Alex Leatherwoods position, right guard or right tackle, the Raiders must beef up the interior of their offensive line.

Lets say Leatherwood opens the season at right guardthe front office should find an upgrade for John Simpson on the left side. He committed the second-most penalties among the teams offensive linemen in 2021, per Pro Football Focus. While the Clemson product looks decent in pass protection for stretches, McDaniels may want to at least challenge the second-year pro with a veteran in the offseason.

Per The Athletics Vic Tafur, Richie Incognito and Denzelle Good beat Simpson in position battles for the guard spots last offseason, but the former couldnt shake a calf injury, which sidelined him for the entire 2021 campaign, and the latter tore his ACL in Week 1.

Coming off a serious knee injury with only one year left on his contract, Good could be a cap casualty as he goes into his age-31 season.

If Leatherwood starts at right tackle, the Raiders might have two new starting guards in 2022.

Wide receiver drops a couple of spots on the needs list because McDaniels has featured two tight ends in the passing game as the offensive play-caller for the New England Patriots.

Last offseason, as the de facto general manager of the Patriots, Dave Ziegler spent $87.5 million on Smith ($50 million) and Henry ($37.5 million). In Vegas, McDaniels will likely use Darren Waller and Foster Moreau as a pair in two-tight end sets. This past season, the duo combined for 1,038 receiving yards and five touchdowns.

With Waller healthy and wideout Hunter Renfrows rise to become quarterback Derek Carrs favorite target when the star tight end isnt on the field, the Raiders can mask their receiver needs if they employ more 12 personnel looks (one running back, two tight ends and two wide receivers).

Renfrow can line up in the slot or on the perimeter and handle a high value of targets as we saw this past season. With that said, McDaniels could add a deep-threat perimeter weapon to replenish what the offense lost after waiving Henry Ruggs III.

Bryan Edwards will probably have another year to grow in a new offense, but hes a big-bodied (63, 212 lbs) possession receiver. The Raiders tried to inject speed into the aerial attack with the addition of DeSean Jackson in November. As the 35-year-old and Zay Jones hit free agency, expect the front office to add a couple of wide receivers who can put some pressure on opposing safeties downfield.

Casey Hayward Jr. just had one of his best seasons, allowing a 57.1 completion rate and three touchdowns in coverage. He also broke up nine passes and snagged an interception.

While Hayward didnt generate a bunch of turnovers, at times he shut down his side of the field and consistently limited gains over the top. The 32-year-old may follow former Raiders defensive coordinator Gus Bradley to the Indianapolis Colts, leaving a void on the boundary opposite of Trayvon Mullen.

Though rookie fifth-rounder Nate Hobbs has collegiate experience on the boundary, he excelled in the slot under Bradley. Defensive coordinator Patrick Graham can keep him in that spot and find a veteran cover man in free agency or push to draft a high-end prospect in a strong class of cornerbacks.

Graham will adjust his schemes to a players strengths, but he made a point to highlight the importance of playing man coverage last summer.

Dont be surprised if the Raiders acquire a cornerback who can press at the line of scrimmage and stick to receivers with speed and route anticipation.

This isnt a premium position. Typically, teams use a rotation of defenders between the edge-rushers. However, the Raiders have five notable players within the unit set to hit the open market.

If Johnathan Hankins, Quinton Jefferson, Solomon Thomas, Gerald McCoy, whos recovering from a torn ACL, and Darius Philon, whos on the mend with a torn patellar tendon, all sign elsewhere, the Raiders would lose a combined total of 2,092 defensive snaps across the front line from last year.

In recent years, Graham has worked with 300-plus-pound interior linemen, so keep that in mind with the Raiders acquisitions regardless of what type of alignment (odd- or even-man front) he runs in 2022.

Under Bradley, Vegas had its issues stopping the run until Week 15, giving up 122-plus rushing yards in nine out of 17 games.

Because of all the expiring contracts within the defensive line unit, expect the Raiders to completely revamp that group, bringing in bigger bodies and at least one aggressive penetrator to challenge opposing guards on passing downs.

As noted above, Good isnt a lock to make the roster at his age (31) following a significant knee injury. The front office can release him and save about $4.2 million, per Over the Cap.

Even if he remains on the roster, the Raiders can do a lot better at right tackle if Leatherwood continues to play at right guard. Brandon Parker will likely find a new career home after another subpar campaign. He allowed 120 quarterback pressures and 22 sacks in 2,199 career snaps, per Pro Football Focus.

Going into the offseason, the Raiders dont have a reliable full-time right tackle, which seems like a perpetual issue with this club for decades. Good hasnt played more than 283 snaps at right tackle in a single season, per PFF. Hes primarily a guard.

If Ziegler and McDaniels want to build a strong offensive line, theyll need to bolster the right side. With Leatherwood still learning on the job, the offensive lineman next to him should be an established veteran or a top prospect whos pro-ready.

The new coaching staff may give Leatherwood another shot to start at right tackle but even if thats the case, the Raiders should sign a veteran who could be an insurance policy if he continues to struggle mightily with pass protection on the outside.

North Las Vegas police officer takes in 5 children after father is fatally shot – FOX5 Las Vegas

Posted: at 8:18 am

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -- Jan. 14started as a normal day for North Las Vegas Police Officer Nicholas Quintana.

He was on his lunch break when a homicide call came through dispatch.

"Trying to enjoy my lunch and this urge, this abrupt urge, thats the best way I can describe it, came and I ended up going to the call," he said.

Quintana raced to the crime scene at a home on Osaka Pearl Street, where a woman was arrested for allegedly shooting her husband.

Responding officers were shocked to find that the couple's five children were still in the house.

"Wow. Thats sad. Thats extremely sad because now these kids are going to go to Child Haven," Quintana said.

For Quintana, though, it was a sight he had personally seen before.

"For me, it brought back a memory from my childhood where my father was killed by a family member of mine," he said.

Instead of leaving the scene, another urge hit Quintana.

"These thoughts like, Hey, take the kids in, and Im like, What?'" he said he remembered thinking at the time.

He took the idea of fostering the children home to his wife, Amanda.

"Understandably so, she was absolutely reluctant towards it," he said. "I was like, Well listen hun, just meet the kids, just meet them, because you might just fall in love with these kids. Just meet them."

Three days later, the couple drove to Child Haven.

"She met the kids. After speaking with them for 15, 20 minutes, I look at my wife and say, Hey, should we tell them?"

Two days after meeting, they were driving home as a family of seven.

"I look at the kids and I say, Hey, look, the reason why were here is because I had a thought. Id like to take every single one of you. Id like to take you in our home. And the 16-year-old gasped for a sec and said, Really? and I said, Yeah, and of course, the oldest one says, All of us? and I said, Every single one of you," he said.

Quintana says being a father has always been a goal.

"I didnt really have a father figure growing up. Ive always longed for that father figure in to be a father, to love my child the way I wouldve loved my father to love me," he said.

Quintana said the past month has been an adjustment for all seven of them.

"Its very humbling. Its amazing. Theres just so many different emotions and so many different things, adjectives to describe it all," he said.

But the officer said he would not trade any of it for the world.

"I think about every single last one of them from the oldest to the youngest," he said. "Now, Im not just thinking about these decisions for my wife, now, Im thinking about it for my wife and our kids, our kiddos now."

The Quintanas started fostering classes so they can get their fostering licenses to receive some financial help. Until then, they are paying for everything out of pocket. The department set up a GoFundMe to help them during this time. To donate, click here.

I-Team: Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Chris Lammons wanted in connection with Alvin Kamara beating in Las Vegas – KLAS – 8 News Now

Cornerback one of 3 men named in battery case before Pro Bowl, sources say

by: David Charns

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Chris Lammons is a wanted suspect in a beating in Las Vegas involving New Orleans Saints player Alvin Kamara, sources tell the 8 News Now I-Team.

As the I-Team first reported Tuesday night, Las Vegas Metro police arrested two men and were searching for a third for their alleged roles in the nightclub beating involving New Orleans Saints player Alvin Kamara.

The third suspect is Lammons, 26, sources said.

Kamara was named a suspect in the beating at Drais After Hours at The Cromwell Las Vegas Hotel & Casino before the Pro Bowl on Feb. 6.

The victim told police he was leaving the nightclub on Feb. 5 when multiple people began hitting and kicking him.

The victim told police he remembered one man, later identified as Kamara, 26, who put his hand on the victims chest before the alleged battery began, the report said. The victim suffered a broken eye socket and could not keep his eye open in the hospital.

The two other men have been identified as Percy Ahmaad and Darrin Christopher Young, according to court records obtained by the 8 News Now Team on Tuesday.

Police reviewed video of the incident, saying it shows Kamara pushing the victim and punching him in the face, the report said.

As [the victim] is on the ground, Kamara continues punching him three more times, the report said. Three others, from Kamaras group, join in and begin stomping [the victim] in the face, chest and legs.

Security officers then escorted Kamara and his group into a waiting SUV and leave, police said.

Metro police confirmed to the I-Team that Kamara was a suspect in the case by Sunday morning before the afternoon game, saying NFL security was made aware around 10 a.m. The arrest report indicates investigators interviewed Kamara after the game inside Allegiant Stadium.

All four men face charges of conspiring to commit battery and battery resulting in substantial bodily harm.

The NFL nor the Kansas City Chiefs have responded to repeated requests for comment.

Kamara said he remembered the victim calling one of his friends ugly and then a fight breaking out.

Alvin Kamara has gained a well-deserved reputation for being a hard-working and community minded individual, Kamaras attorneys, Drew Findling, David Chesnoff and Richard Schonfeld said in a statement. The recent Las Vegas allegations are not consistent with who Mr. Kamara has shown himself to be in both his public and private life. Therefore, we are conducting our own investigation into all the circumstances and individuals associated with this matter to determine both the facts and motivations of all involved.

An attorney for Lammons has not returned a request for comment.

Three of the four men, including Kamara, are due in court in March.

What’s that smell? Southeast Las Vegas neighbors complain of foul odor emanating from Rawhide wash – KTNV Las Vegas

Posted: at 8:18 am

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) Melissa Taylors boyfriend moved into a nice home in southeast Las Vegas about four years ago. Theres not too much traffic, school buses whiz by and there is an in-ground pool to enjoy with a large backyard.

The one thing missing: the smell of fresh air.

"Its hard to maintain the yard with this smell, especially in the summer time when bugs are flying all around," Taylor said. "I get severe headaches from the smell just by being out here for a short time. Its hard to enjoy such a nice area."

The Rawhide channel runs straight through the neighborhood, near Rawhide Street and Sandhill Road, and into the Flamingo wash, which then travels to Lake Mead. As expected, there's water in the wash that abuts the property but thats not all. Tuesday, there were heaps of garbage and weeds with bugs swarming around in Taylor's backyard.

Taylor says you can also sometimes find urine, feces, syringes and homeless people in the wash. She says it hasnt been cleaned in more than two years, while the main channels are cleaned once a month.

"People have come out and havent done anything. If they do get down there and do anything, they just use a weed eater and cut the grass and leave it," Taylot said. "Thats not going to help. Its just going to stay there and build up more sludge."

Taylor tried calling the county back in the summer, but says nothing was done. 13 Action News reached out to the county to get to the dirty bottom of the problem.

"Sometimes, there are side channels, which this sounds like it is. We should be cleaning those out, but apparently we dont," said Commissioner Tick Segerblom. "Now that its on my radar, Ill make sure it gets cleaned out regularly."

The commissioner extended his apologies to the neighborhood and says action will be taken immediately to address the issue.

"Thats something that we somehow neglected. Based on this complaint, I directed public works to go clean out the channel. They told me they will start that tomorrow," Segerblom said.

Taylor plans to hold him to that and said she would keep in touch for any further developments.
