Formula One to Hit Las Vegas in 2023 as Circuit Adds Third U.S. Race – Sportico
Posted: March 31, 2022 at 3:35 am
One of the hottest events in the U.S. and around the world is coming to Las Vegas beginning in 2023, it was announced among the famous glitz of the Nevada city on Wednesday night.
The third Formula One Grand Prix auto race in the country will be staged during a weekend in November of 2023 on a 3.8-mile track running between the casinos and hotels of the Las Vegas strip, with speeds expected to reach as high as 212 miles per hour.
It will follow Grand Prix races already scheduled this year in Miami (May 6-8) and Austin (Oct. 21-23).
F1 and Liberty Media will promote the event along with Live Nation Entertainment and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA).
Iconic Las Vegas and Formula One, the pinnacle of motorsport, is the perfect marriage of speed and glamour, said Greg Maffei, Liberty Medias president and chief executive. Our confidence in this unique opportunity is evident in our decision to assume the promoter role for the Las Vegas Grand Prix in partnership with Live Nation.
F1s popularity in the U.S. was punctuated earlier this month when tickets for the event in Austin sold out in a little more than 24 hours.
With 36 million fans, the U.S. represents one of F1s fastest growing markets. Three-day attendance at last years U.S. Grand Prix in Austin of 400,000 set a new F1 record. The 1.2 million viewers on ESPN made it the most-viewed race since ESPN acquired F1 rights ahead of the 2018 season. So much purchasing enthusiasm was generated that the series added the Miami race to this years the calendar, and Las Vegas for next year.
The race in Miami Gardens will spin around Hard Rock Stadium, home of the NFLs Miami Dolphins. Its the first F1 race in Florida since 1959.
This is an incredible moment for Formula One that demonstrates the huge appeal and growth of our sport with a third race in the U.S., said Stefano Domenicali, F1s president and chief executive. There is no better place for Formula One to race than in the global entertainment capital of the world and we cannot wait to be here next year.
The race is slated to take place on a Saturday night with race cars whizzing past the neon lights of the strip while completing 50 laps on a track that will include three main straightaways and 14 corners.
The news comes on the heels of announcement by Oak View Group that the company will launch a $3 billion mixed use development in Las Vegas, including plans for a casino and a 20,000 seat arena capable of hosting an NBA team.
Founding partners Caesars Entertainment, MGM Resorts International and Wynn Las Vegas, along with presenting partners MSG Sphere, Resorts World Las Vegas and The Venetian Resort, will also help promote the F1 race event.

North Las Vegas helping Small Businesses Owners with ‘Jumpstart 2022’ – KTNV 13 Action News Las Vegas
Posted: at 3:34 am
NORTH LAS VEGAS (KTNV)
The city of North Las Vegas Wants to help small businesses get off the ground. It's a part of their 'Small Business Connector' initiative called 'Jumpstart 20-22', which helps connect local entrepreneurs find the resources they need.
With a specific focus on North las vegas, Jumpstart 2022 was geared towards those interested inlaunching a business.
Starting your own business or start-up can be intimidating, especially when you don't have access to the right information and resources.
Their goal, is to make those connections between business professionals and business owners.
Carlos Meija is the Lead Businesses Development Advisor with the Nevada Small Business Development Center.
He says it doesn't matter if your business is in the 'idea stage', or if it's an already successful business - looking to expand - the resources at North Las Vegas' City Hall can help you.
"The role that I play is, I provide technical assistance, guidance, mentorship, to the entrepreneurial/small business community in any stage that they may be in. From starting, owning, and exiting a business, I help them with all those stages and everything in between," said Meija.
So, you may be thinking, I've got this great idea, but it costs money.
Nic Steele, the Executive Director for Access Community Capital, a Loan Administrator, says they have programs that offer small businesses an alternative to the standard PPP or small business loan.
"We are a lot different than your traditional financial institution. Our loans are primarily unsecured, so an individual can come in, they can talk to us about different loan products that we have available. Our loan rates are extremely competitive over one-to-three-year terms, and those rates are simply rates that are unavailable to small business owners especially when they start in the early business stages," said Steele.
Officials at The City of North Las Vegas say small businesses are what bring in a great deal of revenue to the city and the community.
More businesses, lead to more jobs.
Mack Wiggins, is Business Services Consultant, who works to connect small businesses with strong reliable employees as they continue to grow. He says, "Employers and job seekers have a symbiotic relationship so they work together, and we want to put the right people with the right employers, to make sure we take the time to find out what the job seeker is looking for, and take the time out to find out what the employer is looking for, and be able to create that network together with the two."
The small business connector has launched several small businesses, including that of local business owner JaDee Glover.
At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, she along with many other people found themselves out of work. She says she took a leap of faith and started her own business called, 'All Paperwork Services and Cash Back'.
''My business was born during the pandemic, so it's literally because of the pandemic, that I decided to push forward. I wanted to help people navigate what they can do and how to turn themselves into a legitimized business, so they can reach out to all these resources. A lot of people don't think of themselves as a business, they think of themselves as side hustle, or a hairstylist or a mechanic, and my job is to let them know that, no, you area small business and let's get the paperwork behind you, to make sure of that," said Glover.
North Las Vegas Mayor John Lee and Councilwoman Pamela Goynes-Brown were guest speakers at the Small Business Connector event.
The North Las Vegas Connector began in October of 2021 and has already helped 285 small businesses, 223 of which are minority business enterprises, 157 women business enterprises, 30 veteran-owned companies, and 137 based in North Las Vegas.

F1 puts its chips on Las Vegas: Series to race The Strip – Daily Independent
Posted: at 3:34 am
By JENNA FRYER
Formula One is all-in on the United States with a race on the Las Vegas Strip added to the 2023 calendar as the most glamorous motorsports series in the world continues to expand its North American footprint.
The Bellagio, Caesars Palace and the MSG Sphere will be among the landmarks along the temporary street course built for a Saturday night race in November 2023. The race is a first for F1 in that the series will promote the event alongside Liberty Media Corp., the American parent company of F1.
The Las Vegas race will be the third stop in the United States next season for F1, which has raced at Circuit of the America's in Austin, Texas, since 2012 and in May will make its debut in Miami. Barring any shakeups, existing races in Mexico City and Montreal will bring F1 to North America five times next season.
Iconic Las Vegas and Formula 1, the pinnacle of motorsport, is the perfect marriage of speed and glamour," said Greg Maffei, President and CEO of Liberty Media. "Our confidence in this unique opportunity is evident in our decision to assume the promoter role for the Las Vegas Grand Prix.
"The potential of Formula 1 has been well demonstrated over the last several seasons and the Las Vegas GP will only take it to the next level.
Speculation surrounding a third race in Las Vegas that utilized the world famous Strip has swirled for more than a year and was at last confirmed Wednesday night in a lavish announcement made at the rooftop pool of The Cosmopolitan Hotel. Liberty acquired F1 in 2017 and has steadily grown the brand in the U.S. through its marketing of the series and the wildly popular Netflix docuseries Drive to Survive.
The fourth season of DTS dropped earlier this month just ahead of F1's season-opener in Bahrain, the first of back-to-back races held in the Middle East. F1 has been under scrutiny for some of those deals because of dubious human rights records in some of the host countries.
So it was a rocky return to Saudi Arabia for F1 last weekend when Yemen rebels attacked an oil depot during the first practice session on Friday. Smoke and flames could be seen in the backdrop of the racetrack as the oil depot was located only 11 kilometers (seven miles) from the racetrack.
Drivers met for more than four hours to determine if they were comfortable continuing with Sunday's race, which ultimately went off incident-free.
Still, F1 has been accused of overlooking serious human rights violations while collecting hefty sanctioning fees from the host nations. But in the case of the Las Vegas race, it will be F1 and Liberty backing the event.
F1 and Liberty are also partnering with Live Nation Entertainment and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority on the race. The founding partners announced Wednesday night were Caesars Entertainment, MGM Resorts International and Wynn Las Vegas.
MSG Sphere, Resorts World Las Vegas and The Venetian Resort were announced as presenting sponsors.
This is an incredible moment for Formula 1 that demonstrates the huge appeal and growth of our sport with a third race in the U.S.," said Stefano Domenicali, the CEO of F1. Las Vegas is a destination known around the world for its excitement, hospitality, thrills, and of course, the famous Strip. There is no better place for Formula 1 to race than in the global entertainment capital of the world and we cannot wait to be here next year.
No date was given for the November race, but the Saturday night after Thanksgiving has been discussed. The 50-lap race is expected to stretch a street course that runs 3.8-miles. The circuit revealed Wednesday night included three main straights, 14 corners that includes a high-speed cornering sequence, and a single chicane section.
COTA drew more than 300,000 spectators to its three-day weekend last October and track president Bobby Epstein said the addition of Las Vegas to the F1 calendar shouldn't dilute his event.
Theres plenty to sustain this sport. What I like about what F1 is doing and what I think the fans will realize, is that each event is very different from the other and will be very unique," Epstein told The Associated Press.
The other US races are going to be more about the city and the destination, and ours is going to be more about the event itself. Im excited to go to Vegas, not just for F1, but because the city has so much more entertainment, outside and away from whatever the track will be. If Im already a regular Vegas visitor, it will be more a question of am I choosing to go to F1 this year and not March Madness or a heavyweight fight?"

MGM CEO Says One Big Thing Has Helped Las Vegas Casino Business – TheStreet
Posted: March 29, 2022 at 1:10 pm
Las Vegas used to be off-limit to most major league sports due to fears over how athletes and the potential to place bets might mix.
That has changed as sports betting has become legal in multiple states, making its risks to the integrity of games no longer a Las Vegas problem, but more or less a national one.
That has opened the door for Sin City to add the NHL's Las Vegas Golden Knights playing at T-Mobile Arena on the Strip in the heart of a number of (MGM) - Get MGM Resorts International Report Resorts International MGM and Caesars Entertainment (CZR) - Get Caesars Entertainment Inc Report properties.
Now, the former Oakland Raiders play in Allegiant Stadium just off the strip which has been a driver not just for Caesars, MGM, and Strip-based properties, but pretty much all of Vegas' hotels and casinos.
That may be just the start, with the Oakland Athletics have negotiating with a number of Las Vegas Strip and Strip-adjacent sites, and an NBA-ready arena has been funded for a site on the North Strip.
Add in the heavy rumors that Formula 1 will come to Las Vegas as well as the already-announced Super Bowl headed to Sin City in 2024 and it's easy to see why MGM CEO Bill Hornbuckle believes sports has become a huge driver for his brand and his competitors.
USA TODAY Sports
Hornbuckle has been very excited by what the addition of the Raiders to the city has done for its hotels and casinos.
"If you look at the Raiders, though, as a simple example, remember what happened there. Half of their seat licenses went to people out of town. The folks in town are now selling those seats, by the way, to other visitors," he said during his company's fourth-quarter earnings call.
"So the Raiders have talked about 60. Their numbers, not ours, 68% of those seats on a game day are the out-of-towners, big pickup in millennials."
Allegiant Stadium holds about 65,000 people, so that's over 40,000 out-of-town visitors headed to Las Vegas for each game.
The CEO also noted that the Knights are a similar draw, albeit with fewer fans, but roughly five times the games, not counting the playoffs.
Scroll to Continue
He believes that his company and the city, in general, have learned a lot about how to host sporting events. That's going to be key, with a number of major events that are planned for or could end up coming to Las Vegas in future years.
"And we have become, without a doubt, and we're talking about NCAA regional finals, we're talking about the Final Four someday, we got the Super Bowl here in '24," he said.
"Arguably, we've become America's, if not the world's, most popular sports destination because it just isn't a three-hour game, it's a three-day event," he said.
The current sports layout has been especially good for MGM, according to its CEO, and likely Caesars, which has lots of nearby properties.
"And so, we're enjoying that, obviously, particularly with the South and Strip and Allegiant. Starting with T-Mobile on to Allegiant, all of that is all us. And so we are sandwiched right in the middle of some really exciting stuff," he added.
Fans traveling to away games specifically meaningful ones happens across all of sports, but few cities offer the draw, amenities, hotel, and travel options that Las Vegas does.
It's a roughly eight-hour drive from Oakland to Las Vegas (550 or so miles) or a very quick flight.
People who live in pretty much any American city can get to Las Vegas easily and a lot of discount airlines fly there.
When it comes to places to stay and travel options, Las Vegas and Orlando are probably one and two, depending upon what you want to do.
But for fans traveling for a sporting event, Sin City may have the edge, because of its reputation for adult fun and the presence of legal betting.
Sports gives people an excuse to go to Las Vegas and Las Vegas has become a pretty easy city to get to with rooms available at a variety of price points. It's easy to see how Knights and Raiders game (and maybe eventually A's and an NBA team games) drive steady traffic to Caesars, MGM and the other Las Vegas players.

The Best Things to Do in Las Vegas With Kids – Cond Nast Traveler

Everyone goes to Las Vegas hoping to hit a jackpot. And on my first night there with my five-year-old twins, eating cream puffs, watching a dancing fountain, riding an elevator to the top of an Eiffel Tower replica, and then watching a flurry of (play) $100 bills fall from the sky during a live theater performance, I was fairly certain I had.
Sin City has a squeaky clean side, and visiting as a family is an ideal opportunity to see Americas playground from a different point of view. There are buffets with desserts piled as far as their eyes can see, neon light shows, giant ferris wheels, hotels where acrobats swing from the ceiling, and even an aquarium that can reveal a life-like mermaid. Off the Strip, a flurry of new development over the past decade has brought urban parks, immersive entertainment venues, and a renovated, top of the line childrens museum to the city as well.
For traveling families, Las Vegas is so much more than a place for gambling and gluttony. Indeed, with a bit of planning and a willingness to sidestep some of the citys more seedy attributes, it can be one of the best vacation destinations for kids in the West. Here are some of the best things to do in Las Vegas with kids.

The King's Room at Black Tap
Black Tap's vegan Black N White Cake Shake
Lets start with the food. Las Vegas has no shortage of world-class restaurants, but it's best to hold off on the refined dinner reservations at Mr. Chow or Jol Robuchonmany of the city's fine-dining spots dont allow small kids in the first place. But parents need not settle for the purgatory of the fast-casual chain restaurant: At Black Tap inside The Venetian, my girls munched on fried mozzarella and a bison burger while their dad and I split smoky barbecued wings and a wagyu patty with truffle-yuzu vinaigrette; we all then watched in awe as the shake artists at Crazy Shakes prepared a milkshake topped with an entire piece of cake.
Las Vegas buffets are heaven for the picky pint-sized eater, and the largest among them, Bacchanal Buffet at Caesars Palace, has sliders, wagon-wheel mac n cheese, and red velvet pancakes for the kiddosplus duck carnitas, fresh seafood, and dim sum for the adults. At the charming bistro Mon Ami Gabi inside Paris Las Vegas, my enfants were not left out of the elegance: They were greeted with crayons and a French word-search game, then served their dishes on special kids' plates.
Inside Minus5 ICEBAR
And they had certainly worked up an appetite: Beyond Las Vegass casinos, where under-21s are only allowed to walk through (not loiter), the city overflows with attractions to thrill little minds. At the Minus5 ICEBAR, for example, kids are welcome before 8:00 p.m., and upon entering are greeted with a coat, hat and gloves, then handed a cup made of ice they can fill with a mocktail of their choice. The High Roller, the largest observation wheel in North America, offers a smooth ferris-wheel ride 550 feet in the air; older kids will love the adjacent Fly LINQ zipline. My five-year-olds were content with FlyOver Las Vegas, which offers virtual flight rides la Disneylands Soaring Over California.

Wynn Bets Big on the Las Vegas Strip (and Macau) – TheStreet
Posted: at 1:10 pm
Different locales call for different strategies in the casino business.
When Macau was the buzzing international growth market as recently as 2019, most American casinos sold investors on their plans to expand in China.
But a couple of years of pandemic lockdowns, and uncertainty about gambling licenses amid a crackdown on corruption in the country's gaming sector, have splashed cold water on some of the hotter expectations in the region.
Take Wynn, for example.
Wynn Resorts (WYNN) - Get Wynn Resorts, Limited Reporthas two casinos in Macau, the Wynn Macau and Wynn Palace, that were the company's most profitable resorts. But both resorts lost money for the company in the final months of 2021.
Just three years ago, Macau accounted for 70% of Wynn's business.
While Wynn never abandoned Las Vegas, the company definitely put its hometown on the back burner while it focused its efforts abroad.
During the company's most recent earnings call, recently installed CEO Craig Billings gave some insight into the move.
Las Vegas as a gambling hub is different than any other city in America for numerous obvious reasons.
However, the city is also different than other gaming communities, according to Billings.
"Las Vegas is a very different market compared to regional markets. Potential operational deleveraging in an economic downturn is more extreme [in Vegas] as we saw in 2009, and the need for continuous and sizable reinvestment in order to stay relevant is high," Billings said of the city.
Scroll to Continue
Just how high?
Billings said Wynn is back to regular, pre-pandemic maintenance costs of between $75 million to $85 million a year.
Beyond core maintenance, Wynn is reconstructing the Le Reve theater at Wynn Las Vegas at a cost of about $120 million, about $30 million of which it spent through the end of 2021.
Wynn is also renovating the Wynn Las Vegas tower rooms with a total budget of $220 million, of which $120 million has been spent.
"I never want us to be in a position where in the midst of a downturn, we have to choose between our world class service and escrowing rent or between paying rent and investing in our property, Billings said, calling the company's service its "calling card."
Meanwhile, maintenance costs at the company's property in Boston are only $20 million, on a property that just opened in 2019.
Instead of using capital expenditures on maintenance in Boston, Wynn plans to spend between $200 million and $250 million to expand the property over 2023 and 2024.
In contrast, maintenance costs in Macau are expected to total between $60 million and $80 million in 2022.
Macau is in flux.
While the government has begun renewing casino licenses, Bloomberg reportsthat the local government is likely to demand new investment from companies like Wynn in order to keep operating there.
But that hasn't dimmed the company's hopes for a long, fruitful business in the region.
"As we have seen before, when Macau is more accessible, demand snaps right back. Long-term, I remain incredibly enthusiastic about the prospects for Macau," Billings said.
"Between the shift to higher-margin premium mass customers and to customers who have more motivations to visit than just gaming, the market is evolving, and we are prepared to adapt and grow our business as we embrace those changes,"
