Las Vegas tourist alleged sexually assaulted woman, tore off part of her ear, police say – WATE 6 On Your Side

Posted: April 17, 2022 at 11:33 pm

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) A tourist in Las Vegas is accused of sexually assaulting a woman in public and tearing off a piece of her ear, police say.

Samuel Garee Jr., 45, of Salem, Oregon, faces charges including sex assault resulting in substantial bodily harm, kidnapping and battery.

An employee at The Strat Hotel and Casino called police around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday, saying Garee and a woman were attempting to have sexual intercourse near a bus stop on the Las Vegas Strip, police said. The caller indicated the woman was injured.

Police found the victim with several injuries, including part of her ear missing, they said.

Garee told police he was visiting from Oregon and was staying at a different Strip hotel, officers said.

According to police, video surveillance showed the woman performing a sex act on Garee outside of The Strat property. Several witnesses reported seeing Garee hit and punch the woman in the face.

In the hospital, doctors noted the woman had several facial fractures and cuts, and part of her ear was missing, police said. She told police she had just met Garee and accompanied him to the casino. She said he seemed nice but she was not interested in being sexual with him.

Garee told police he was in Las Vegas to celebrate the birth of a grandchild, they said. He maintained he had no memory of the incident.

Judge Holly Stoberski set Garees bail at $500,000. He remained in jail as of Thursday.

City of Las Vegas to hear proposed changes to street performer regulations on Fremont Street after widespread evidence of fraud – KLAS – 8 News Now

Posted: at 11:33 pm

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) We all see performers up and down The Fremont Street Experience sharing their talents from circled spots.

Thats what I do for a living, licensed performer Eugene Booker told 8 News Now.

To claim a designated location, each entertainer must enter an online lottery for a two-hour time slot, but Booker said many are cheating the system.

Ive seen a lot of people get multiple registration numbers, he explained. And take circles away from other performers.

In a proposed bill, The City of Las Vegas said it has evidence of people reportedly creating duplicate or phantom accounts to fraudulently claim circles, or even sell or barter for prime locations.

Its been very difficult sometimes, performer Toney Foote said of the issue. Sometimes I have to wait out here for like four or five hours.

However, this could soon change, as the citys recommending committee will hear a list of proposed amendments to an ordinance last changed in 2015.

It would include requiring performers to provide photo identification during the registration process, along with proof of liability insurance for anything acrobatic or interactive.

The bill also states that any person who violates these rules could be charged with a misdemeanor.

Booker told 8 news Now he would like to see this take effect, so he and others who rely on this work could have a fair chance.

I wish they would regulate the registration, Booker said.

I love entertaining people, Foote concluded. I love entertaining everyone around the world.

The recommending committee will decide Monday whether the bill should move forward onto the full city council for an official vote at a later time.

The full bill can be read below.

For a look at the current performer lottery process, visit this link.

Baby strollers, Ferris wheels and BTS: More tourists are bringing their kids to Las Vegas – CNBC

Posted: at 11:33 pm

It may not be Orlando, but Las Vegas is giving other family-friendly destinations a run for the money.

"Sin City" once marketed itself to people with naughty inclinations with the slogan "What Happens in Vegas Stays in Vegas." Now what happens in Vegas may include Ferris wheels, sporting events and Instagram-worthy family photos.

A survey of 4,000 visitors in 2021 by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority showed a dramatic rise in the number of people bringing children with them. In 2021, 21% of tourists had kids tagging along versus 5% in 2019, before the pandemic.

Overall, Las Vegas had 32 million visitors in 2021, which was down significantly from 42 million in 2019, according to the survey. It also indicates that visitors were younger, more ethnically diverse and more likely to travel from western states within driving distance of Las Vegas.

The authority suspects the rise in family travel to Vegas was a blip, prompted by the pandemic. Families, they say, had limited travel options in 2021, with international travel still problematic and Covid concerns top of mind. Many opted for road trips rather than plane flights.

This year, with kids on school break, it's become so common to see parents pushing strollers through a casino, that even a casino executive barely noticed it. The executive, who declined to be named, laughed and shrugged when a CNBC reporter commented on the sight.

The Campbells came to see the sights and sounds of Las Vegas from North Carolina.

Contessa Brewer | CNBC

Families from the West Coast weren't the only ones who traveled to Sin City with their kids in tow.

Mark and Lori Campbell live in North Carolina. They say they've vacationed up and down the East Coast, so they wanted to do something different. For spring break this week, they decided to bring their children, 11-year-old Madison and 14-year-old Miles, to Las Vegas.

"I knew the kids would be kind of blown away by the lights in the city and the activity and the people," Mark Campbell said, while strolling by a Chippendales photo opportunity on Fremont Street.

The resort city's entertainment options are more welcoming to younger audiences these days, too.

Maisie Rojas, a 15-year-old from Colorado, only had eyes for superstar boy band BTS. She carried a photo of her favorite member of the group, V.Her parents brought her to Las Vegas to celebrate her birthday with a BTS concert last weekend at Allegiant Stadium.

She's also a repeat visitor here with her family. "It's cool. I like it," she said.

Her five-year-old sister Giselle was more enthusiastic."It's amazing!" she said. The lights are her favorite thing about Vegas, she added.

The Rojas family visiting Las Vegas from Colorado came to see the BTS concert at Allegiant stadium.

New York parents Anto and Mel Ounanian considered doing the traditional Orlando Disney World vacation this Easter break, but instead opted to take their family of four to Las Vegas. It was less expensive, and less stressful, for them to travel to Vegas and dodge the crowds at Disney.

"Vegas is just a lot more low key and there's lots for kids to do there," said Mel Ounanian.

The Ounanians typically stay at the Bellagio when they travel as a couple. But for this first family trip to Las Vegas with their four-year-old daughter and eight-year-old son, they booked a room at the family-friendly Mandalay Bay. The resort features 11 acres of "aquatic playground" with a wave pool, lagoon and lazy river.

"A lot of people are kind of surprised by it,'' Mel Ounanian said of her friends' reactions to her family vacation plans. "They think Las Vegas is really more for adults."

The Ounanians say they plan to spend a lot of time at the pool with their family but will also include an outing at Tournament of Kings at Excalibur and maybe M&M World.

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority doesn't even make that much of an effort to lure families with children, focusing more on conferences, conventions, international tourists and business travelers.

Yet the city has a surprising amount of kid-friendly entertainment options: The "High Roller" Ferris wheel, an outdoor zipline at The Linq, the Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay, the Hunger Games Experience at MGM Grand, a Marvel Avengers Museum, immersive art experiences at Area 15 and colorful shows like Cirque de Soleil.

"I think it's just the diversity and variety of things to do that you can't find in any other destination and especially in such a compact area," said Chuck Bowling, president of Mandalay Bay.

Strollers on the strip. A parent pushes a child through a casino at Mandalay Bay.

The city is also a growing destination for sports. The NFL, in particular, has made a strong push into the city with the Raiders franchise playing at Allegiant Stadium, the NFL Draft later this month and the Super Bowl in 2024. The NHL's Golden Knights sell out their hockey games with family friendly entertainment. There's also the WNBA's Aces.

While families may help Vegas broaden its brand, not everyone is excited about the boom in young visitors.

Vegas news and opinion blogger Scott Roeben urged his 100,000 Vital Vegas Twitter followers to "stop bringing kids to Vegas."

"There's kids asleep in their strollers day and night. And adult things are happening around them. And I just don't think they need to be here," Roeben told CNBC, saying he judges parents harshly for bringing children to Las Vegas. (Roeben is not a parent.)

"I'm an advocate for Las Vegas being for grown-ups and children to be everywhere else. Just make it this one place," he said. "They should enjoy a stroll down Main Street at Disneyland or they should go step on Legos at Legoland they don't they don't need to be in Las Vegas."

Not all destinations welcome children. Wynn Las Vegas gained a reputation in its early years for forbidding strollers on its marble pathways through the casino floors, though families now flood in for photos in front of the famous flower-covered carousel.

Circa in downtown Las Vegas flat-out forbids anyone younger than 21 inside, even those accompanied by parents.

"We gave up the family business, the bar mitzvah business, the wedding business to focus on customer service," said Circa CEO and owner Derek Stevens. He said he draws more business by freeing patrons from repeatedly being asked to provide ID at the bars and gaming tables.

Tourism officials and casino executives insist they don't want Las Vegas to become the next Orlando.

"I don't think we want to swing the pendulum that far, because we're still an adult market. What happens here still stays here. We're proud of that," Mandalay Bay's Bowling said.

Parents who bring their children here, however, said they understand Sin City has a seamier side.

Anto Ounanian shrugged off concerns over his two young children being exposed to the seamier side of the strip, including scantily clad showgirls, inebriated adults and the scent of pot smoke.

"That's not much different from day-to-day life of Manhattan," he said.

Making the most of Las Vegas historic luxury boom – Las Vegas Review-Journal

Posted: at 11:33 pm

Can you feel the heat?

And, no, were not talking about Southern Nevadas temperatures starting to creep up.

We are in the heart of a historic time for our local luxury market. There were more homes sold over $5 million in 2021 than any other year in our history. Forty-six homes sold over $5 million in 2021, marking a nearly 60 percent jump from 2020 alone.

While its easy to reflect on the last year and a half, we are still very much in a luxury boom. A local example among so many: Homes in Ascaya are regularly selling near or above the $1,000 per square foot threshold.

It can be tough to find properties to buy in todays market. Our team has a high success rate of connecting buyers with desired properties thanks to a multipronged approach of searching for off-market properties with targeted campaigns to sought-after neighborhoods, buyer consultations to truly grasp their needs and customizing a strategy to get an offer to the front of the line.

We are in a market moment like no other. So, what is driving this and where do things go from here?

Theres no denying that weve had an incredible influx of California buyers moving to Nevada for tax purposes. Many of these folks have been eyeing Nevada for years, perhaps waiting for our city to have its defining moment in their eyes.

Well, whether its the arrival of multiple professional sports teams or an increase of luxury offerings, theyve found plenty of reasons to love Southern Nevada that much more. And, what we are noticing, is that these California transplants are bringing their friends, too.

Were seeing new residents stemming from the likes of Calabasas and San Diego. They were enamored by green landscapes in California, and are finding equally green terrain here, from the Palisades in Summerlin to Southern Highlands.

With the appetite for luxury in Southern Nevada, how can folks make the most of it? Specifically, in a market where there are lots of educated buyers, how does the seller position themselves to get top dollar and limit contingencies so that they can ensure they take the best offer?

For our team, there are three things we advise, among other vital steps:

Get an appraisal ahead of time.

With this, you will know your realistic price point from the get-go, through the appraisal and along the homestretch of any transaction. This step can save sellers a potential headache down the line and mitigate so many anxieties up front.

Get a home inspection.

This will also help you understand the bottom line of your home, as well as what major expenses may be needed to finalize a transaction. Again, equipping yourself with knowledge ahead of time helps mitigate risk, especially in luxury scenarios.

Stage your property.

People love a retail-like experience when touring a home. Ensuring your home is well-lit, smells nice and is decluttered to the point where prospective buyers can truly envision making the space their own. Simply put: Staging a home can help you achieve top dollar.

As for whats next for our scorching hot market, we all wish we had that crystal ball. While things may certainly level over time with the rise of interest rates, we could easily be looking at a 3 percent to 5 percent pop in the luxury space in a matter of months.

It remains a prime time to sell in Southern Nevada and move to this world-class community. And, with that and all this hot market brings, it makes having a trusted team by your side more important than ever.

Area 15 In Las Vegas Rewards Visitors Who Venture Off The Strip – Forbes

Posted: at 11:33 pm

The LIFTOFF ride at the immersive entertainment warehouse, AREA 15, in Las Vegas, Nevada, with the ... [+] nearby Las Vegas strip in the background.

To most travelers, visiting Las Vegas means visiting the Strip, where billion-dollar themed casinos are the modern-day wonders of the world.

An hours stroll can take you through an imagined Egypt (Luxor), Medieval Europe (Excalibur) a bustling New York City (New York New York), the Roman Empire (Caesars Palace), a tropical paradise (Mirage), and a world of faded pirate ships (Treasure Island.) Reality and fidelity to history is not the point; distraction and attachment to your credit card is.

It is no wonder that many never leave the Strip. But there is much to see and do beyond Las Vegas Boulevard. The Mob Museum, for example, merits a trip to downtown. There you can see the history of U.S. organized crime (including the city fathers of Las Vegas), sit in an electric chair, or gawk at the carefully re-assembled Chicago wall that was the site of the St. Valentines Day Massacre. The Mob Museum also has one of the best bars in Las Vegas, the Underground. It makes 1920s style drinks and boasts has its own still for moonshine.

For those with more eclectic tastes, one of the most interesting Las Vegas attractions is Area 15, an upscale warehouse full of immersive entertainment a five-minute Uber ride from most Strip hotels.

Area 15 is a family attraction, but it is also a playground for adults. You can throw an ax, look at a mesmerizing light show, zipline across the building and take a ride into the desert sky at LIFTOFF.

LIFTOFF calls itself a panoramic skyline experience and outdoor lounge. The LIFTOFF experience begins at the comfortable outdoor bar, where specialty drinks include the Liftoff, the Sky High Margarita, Mach 15 Mule, and The Moon Shot. I particularly enjoyed the Liftoff (Ketel One Botanical Peach and Orange Blossom, St. Germain Elderflower Liquor, Fever Tree Aromatic tonic, lemon juice, simple syrup, and a garnish of rosemary.)

Once fortified, (I have a fear of heights) I was ready for LIFTOFF, which flies both day and night. You can even take your drink on board, as each seat has its own cupholder.

LIFTOFF is a cylindrical steel skeleton tower. At the bottom of the tower sits a donut-shaped platform with a dozen seats. You get into your seat, strap yourself in and ride into the sky, legs gently dangling. As the platform rises, it begins to slowly spin around, providing passengers a 360-degree panoramic view. The 10-minute ride goes up one hundred feet and continues to spin slowly, showing off the Strip and the city, mountains, and desert. LIFTOFF thoughtfully provides a neck lanyard for your phone so you can take pictures without dropping it into the void.

Wink World, created by Blue Man Group co-founder Chris Wink, at AREA 15 in Las Vegas. It offers a ... [+] creative light and sound experience as part of the immersive AREA 15 amusement area.

Once you have descended, it is time to explore the rest of Area 15, an enormous two-story warehouse of interesting amusements. Through April Area 15 is offering a cool immersive art double feature, KLIMT + VAN GOGH: THE IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCES. Having seen the Van Gogh show in Los Angeles, I can say it is a fascinating multimedia display of the artists work.

In addition to such special events, Area 15 has a host of experiences open daily from 4PM to midnight Monday through Friday, 2PM to midnight Saturday and Sunday.

We had only about three hours, so in addition to LIFTOFF we tried Wink World, Museum Fiasco, and Dueling Axes. All were fascinating in their own ways.

Wink World was originated by Chris Wink, Chief Creative Officer of the world-famous Blue Man Group. At Wink World: Portals into the Infinite, guests journey through six infinity mirror rooms; each containing a combination of light, color, sound, and motion. The strobe light and sound help create a 20-minute psychedelic extravaganza.

Museum Fiasco is also an immersive audiovisual installation that explores relationships between space, time, and perception. Through its synchronization between sound and light, sequential abstract scenes are created to let visitors wander through lights, mirrors and explore different concepts.

Museum Fiasco at AREA 15, Las Vegas, a a dizzying and entertaining experience of lights, mirror, ... [+] smoke and perception.

Dueling Axes is less abstract. Individuals and groups visiting this axe-throwing lounge get a lane and a target to throw axes at. It takes practice to throw the axe (about hatchet size) and get it to stick into the wood butcher block target. Practice you shall have, as each player gets five throws per frame, with only the highest score recorded. And while drinking and axe throwing may not immediately seem a match made in heaven, couples, groups, and teams were happily going at it.

Among the attractions at Area 15 is also OmegaMart, a super-market styled art exhibition and gallery where you can buy the art, and stores and VR attractions galore, as well as a 5 Iron golf simulator. There are restaurants and snack shops, like Rocket Fiz and its candy creations. And Emporium Arcade Bar Las Vegas curates both its drinks and its rotating collection of art by local artists.

It is easy to get lost inside Area 15, but it is equally easy to find as an Uber or Lyft destination. This psychedelic pleasure dome is hidden in plain sight, just off the Las Vegas Strip.

A visitor crosses above the lines and attractions of AREA 15, an immersive entertainment destination ... [+] in Las Vegas, Nevada.

I-Team: Las Vegas deadly stabbing suspect was on probation for earlier knife incident – KLAS – 8 News Now

Posted: at 11:33 pm

Suspect was previously ordered not to have knives, weapons after bus incident

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) A man accused of stabbing and killing another man after riding together on a city bus Thursday was convicted of a similar charge three years ago and avoided prison time, the 8 News Now I-Team discovered Friday.

Emanuel Beccles, 31, was riding a bus with another man Thursday night when they got into an argument, Metro police said. Beccles and the man got off the bus in the 4600 block of S. Maryland Parkway near UNLV and got into a physical altercation, and Beccles stabbed the victim with a 10-inch knife.

At the same time, a security officer working at an In-N-Out Burger across the street witnessed the stabbing, ran out, confronted the suspect, and detained him, police said.

The victim, described as a Black man in his late 50s, was transported to Sunrise Trauma, where he was pronounced deceased.

Documents indicate police arrested Beccles in February 2019 after pulling out a knife on a bus. A woman had called 911 saying Beccles [pulled] a knife on another passenger.

When the suspect noticed she was on the phone, he approached her, punched her and took her phone, police said. Beccles also reportedly threw a rock at a bus window, breaking it.

Police later found an 8-inch kitchen knife in some bushes, they said.

Beccles pleaded guilty to a charge of assault with a deadly weapon. He was ordered to stay off the bus and ordered not to have any knives, records showed.

In April 2019, Judge Tierra Jones sentenced Beccles to probation. Jones also ordered Beccles to pay $2,300 back to the transit company.

Documents indicate Beccles attorney said he showed a consistent history of employment and had not had any criminal behavior in the last 15 years.

A court hearing in June 2020 indicated Beccles violated his probation. A court hearing in May 2021 indicated Beccles was homeless and had lost his job.

A court hearing in December 2021 indicated Beccles probation violation issue was not resolved and was postponed.

On Dec. 16, Judge Eric Johnson heard arguments over Beccles probation, again ordering him to not have any knives or weapons and to submit to a mental health evaluation, records showed.

Beccles faces a charge of open murder in Thursdays stabbing. He was being held Friday without bail. Police said a booking photo for Beccles was unavailable.

Vegas rockers The Killers bring the bounce to the Strip – Las Vegas Review-Journal

Posted: at 11:33 pm

About two decades ago, I received a package of new music at the office. I was at a different publication in those days, working as the A&E editor. This mailer was a CD from a Las Vegas band that was taking off from its modest beginnings at Caf Espresso Roma, Tinocos Bistro and Huntridge Theatre.

I remember being impressed at The Killers Hot Fuss, initially, because it had two songs I felt could be anthems. Somebody Told Me, was one. On Top, with this slick synth intro was the other.

Fourth song is a hit, I called across the room, referring to Somebody Told Me. And I couldnt get enough of On Top, either.

I recently told Brandon Flowers about my early review, when the band was rehearsing for their appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! at Zappos Theater four years ago. He laughed and said, Not Brightside? Way off. Reference to Mr. Brightside, which is the enduring classic from Hot Fuss.

Wrong about the songs, but right about the band becoming something special. The Killers returned to their hometown (no disrespect to Nephi) over the weekend, wiping out Chelsea at the Cosmopolitan on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The shows were to get the band ready for their upcoming world tour, kicking off April 27 in Monterrey, Mexico, and winding up Dec. 19 in Sydney, Australia. They play T-Mobile Arena on Aug. 26.

We caught the Saturday show, and the boys have matured since their Huntridge days. Flowers stalked the stage, backed by original members Ronnie Vannucci, the ever-present, thundering drummer; and guitarist Dave Keuning. Filling out the roster were bassist Jake Blanton (who is in the band when Mark Stoermer is not), guitarist Ted Sablay and touring keyboardist Robbie Connolly.

The band roared through songs from its deep past and through their most recent two albums, Imploding the Mirage and Pressure Machine. Highlights included Human, from 2008s Day & Age and The Man, from the 2017 Wonderful Wonderful, the video for which was filmed at the Plaza. The backing scenes included the neon signs of Fremont Street twisting as if in a hallucination. The statue of David was shown in the video montage during The Man.

Flowers played a keyboard behind an infinity-symbol stand, which replaced the illuminated K from previous shows. Time is not so important to the band, but holding tight to their roots is, as Flowers announced, Brought to you by way of Fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada, were The Killers!

The crowd continually jumped on the Chelseas spring-loaded floor, causing the room to bounce. If this show were a flight, the fasten-seatbelt sign would have been on, all the way.

At one point, Flowers recalled his days as a bellman at Gold Coast. He told a story of when a guy intentionally slammed into the back of his 1992 Geo Metro, because Flowers had splashed his car with fluid after turning on his windshield wipers. Well take it as the bands first hit, an early demonstration of hot fuss, and a story that plays well in Vegas.

Gospel it out

Gospel Brunch returned to House of Blues at Mandalay Bay, two seatings at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. We took in the early show, the first Gospel Brunch in more than two years at the music hall. We met the front woman of the band and choir, Patti Pennington. She is a wonderful vocalist who survived both COVID and a stroke since the show was sidelined.

Penningtons gratitude is evident in her joyous performance, as she says, I couldnt talk, I couldnt walk but I am singing for you today!

This show deserves a larger stage to promote its return, and by golly the NFL Draft is coming into town. Maybe the league will present the cast at Fountains of Bellagio, we tease aggressively.

What Works In Vegas

Hey, as we forecasted, Amy Saunders is rocking Fremont East with her Mavericks variety show at Cheapshot. The iconic magician Mac King of Excalibur, the longest-running current headliner on the Strip, sidled into the show last week. We hear he might, or will be, back in a few days. Also look for fab comic-actor John Di Domenico, and burlesque performer Michelle LAmour to grace Saunders house of frivolity.

Yet more teasing

Look for a major Vegas headliner to announce a return to residency, in November. We are a fan, and we always dress accordingly.

Cool Hang Alert

Over the weekend Illuminarium at Area15 unveiled Illuminarium After Dark, a nightly nightlife experience for the 21-over set. Guests will be sent to alternative locations, such as the night markets of Tokyo, the floral gardens of France as painted by Georgia OKeeffe, and also such atmospheric destinations as crystal caverns. Signature cocktails and bites from Lumin Caf & Kitchen are also offered. The After Dark concept runs 8 p.m.-midnight Sundays through Thursdays, 8 p.m.-2 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Cost is $60 (all this technology is not cheap), which includes a cocktail. Go to Illuminarium.com/lasvegas/afterdark for details.

Las Vegas to host Saturday night Formula One race in 2023 – ESPN

Posted: March 31, 2022 at 3:35 am

Formula One cars will race under the lights down the Las Vegas strip in 2023 as part of a new event on the championship calendar, joining Austin and Miami as U.S. host venues.

Las Vegas will hosts its event on a Saturday night in November, a rarity in an F1 calendar featuring grand prix events on Sundays.

The race will feature some of the city's most famous landmarks, hotels and casinos in what is a multiyear deal with F1.

The 3.8 mile (6.2km) circuit will see cars flash by Caesars Palace, Bellagio Fountain and Mandalay Bay, as well as the ball-shaped MSG Sphere, which is currently under construction and set for completion next year.

The date of the first event is yet to be confirmed.

American interest in F1, bolstered by Netflix blockbuster series "Drive to Survive," is booming like never before and has led to a surge in interest in hosting races.

This year features the first Miami Grand Prix, taking place May 8. Austin's Circuit of the Americas has hosted the U.S. Grand Prix since 2012, missing only 2020 due to the pandemic.

"This is an incredible moment for Formula One that demonstrates the huge appeal and growth of our sport with a third race in the US," F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali said.

"Las Vegas is a destination known around the world for its excitement, hospitality, thrills, and of course, the famous Strip. There is no better place for Formula 1 to race than in the global entertainment capital of the world and we cannot wait to be here next year."

Miami joins Austin's Circuit of the Americas (COTA), which hosts the U.S. Grand Prix in October. Until this year, COTA has been the only U.S. race on the F1 schedule since 2012.

I-Team: Once-missing Las Vegas driver agrees to at least 2 years in prison for killing grandmother in DUI crash – KLAS – 8 News Now

Posted: at 3:35 am

Prosecutors had warned defendant was 'flight risk'

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) A woman accused of driving under the influence and causing a crash that killed a mother and grandmother who prosecutors had warned was a flight risk and who then disappeared has agreed to go to prison.

Gilma Rodriguez-Walters, 53, was killed in the December 2019 crash. She was on her way home from work at a Las Vegas-area Home Depot when Byrd, 63, crashed into her, police said.

As part of a plea deal, Byrd could go to prison for 2-20 years, documents filed in court said. It is up to a judge to decide the actual sentence.

Two years is not enough time to give anyone for taking our mom away, Rodriguez-Walters daughter, Ruth Neall, told the 8 News Now I-Teams David Charns on Wednesday. For taking our grandma away, taking a daughter away.

In July 2020, a grand jury indicted Byrd on charges of driving under the influence resulting in death and reckless driving. Two months later, Byrd was back in court, accused of violating the conditions of her release. Court documents indicate testing found alcohol in Byrds system.

Prosecutors argued for the judge to increase bail to $100,000 and put Byrd on house arrest, warning she could flee. Byrd was due in court on Feb. 1 and did not show.

In court paperwork filed earlier this month, Marsha Byrds lawyer said a nurse had written down an incorrect court date, which later prompted a judge to issue a warrant for her arrest.

Byrd was taken into custody two weeks ago and was later put on house arrest.

A sentencing date had not been scheduled as of Wednesday.

Byrds lawyer did not respond to a request for comment when the I-Team first reported Byrds disappearance. He had filed a request to be removed from the case, but a judge denied that request last week.

I-Team: Las Vegas teenager arrested in 2 deadly shootings near UNLV – KLAS – 8 News Now

Posted: at 3:35 am

Murders both happened near UNLV last year, I-Team reported

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) A now-15-year-old is charged with two murders that happened last summer, the 8 News Now I-Team confirmed Wednesday.

Dennis Commodore, who was 14 when the shootings occurred, faces two counts of open murder in the two deaths last summer.

Police initially arrested the teenager last August in connection to the shooting death of a man at an apartment complex on Aug. 8, the 8 News Now I-Team reported last year.

Commodores name was not released at the time.

The victim in the Aug. 8 shooting, Raymond Roseby, 28, was shot and killed in a car parked in the 4900 block of South Maryland Parkway near Tropicana Avenue, the Clark County Coroners Office confirmed.

Investigators said Roseby died from multiple gunshot wounds. He was sitting in the drivers seat of the car and was talking to the teenager, who was standing at the drivers window when the shooting occurred.

In an arrest report obtained Wednesday, police said police located 10 cartridge cases in the area after the shooting. Witnesses told police the suspect was trying to remove the Rosebys gold chains after the shooting.

Once in custody, police determined the teenager was a suspect in a deadly shooting on July 31.

Just before 10 p.m. that day, investigators said someone shot and killed Faris Martinez, 49, in an alley in the 1100 block of Toni Avenue, which is near Maryland Parkway and Tropicana Avenue as well.

Martinezs cause of death was listed as multiple gunshot wounds, officials said. Witnesses said the suspect demanded a gold necklace.

Both shooting locations are within the same block just south of the UNLV campus.

When detectives searched Commodores room, they said they found Rosebys watch.

Nevada law mandates children 13 and older can be tried as adults if they are charged with murder or attempted murder.
