How to Stay Healthy in Las Vegas During the WSOP – PokerNews.com

Posted: at 2:25 am

With the 2022 World Series of Poker (WSOP) just a few weeks away, thousands of poker players around the world will be cramming in some last-minute study before they head to Bally, Las Vegas in search of WSOP glory.

To best retain the information you have learned, you need to look after your body and your brain to ensure peak performance when playing. The best poker players in the world try their best to stay in shape and keep their minds sharp. You only need to look at elite players like Jason Koon and Alex Foxen to realise that.

And while there's no problem with indulging yourself with some of the best food and drink Las Vegas has to offer, just remember to make it a one-off rather than a mainstay of your WSOP routine. PokerNews has come up with five top tips for you to stay healthy, so you are at your best when at the felt.

An obvious tip, but probably the most important one, is to stay hydrated. I don't need to tell you how hot it gets in Las Vegas during WSOP season, so you should always have a water bottle on you at all times.

If you are dehydrated, your body and your mind will not function as optimally, and with decision-making such an important part of poker it'd be foolish to not get at least two litres down your throat each day.

Reusable bottles are all the rage at the moment, which is great because it means less plastic is being wasted. That being said, it might be still worthwhile picking up a crate of water bottles so you can stash some in a backpack, your car or hotel room so you know you can access one easily if you lose your reusable bottle.

You should also be mindful of your caffeine intake. Drinks like coffee and tea both dehydrate you. If you've had a late night at the cash tables and then have an early start the following day, by all means, get a coffee, but remember, you'll need to drink more water to compensate.

This is not an easy one, especially if you are new to Las Vegas. The strip is littered with fast-food restaurants and the casino buffets are often decked out with foods that may not be the best for you. It's hard to find a truly clean meal.

Be sure to venture to local food markets to get fresh and healthy produce, so you can prepare your own meals or guilt-free snacks.

Fruit and vegetables also have high amounts of water in them, so not only are you looking after your gut, you'll be staying hydrated as well.

BUY A PIECE OF DANIEL NEGREANU'S WSOP PACKAGE

If you are staying in one of the hotels on the strip, then you'll have access to some of the best gyms and leisure facilities Vegas offers. You should make the most of this as it's been proven time and time again that regular exercise helps improve your mental functions.

If you want to get outdoors, there are some great hiking trails in the area, such as Red Rock Canyon and Mt. Charleston. However, if you do decide to go for a hike, do it in the morning or late afternoon when it is coolest. As the old saying goes, "only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun."

If you do decide to go outside then make sure you've got some good sunblock with a high SPF factor. Sunburn and sunstroke are no jokes, and you'll never be at your best at the poker table if your entire body is burning.

Don't forget that being out in the desert sun without protection can speed up illnesses such as skin cancer. Before you to Vegas make sure you've got sunblock, sunglasses and a baseball cap in your suitcase.

No one needs to be reminded of the importance of a good sleep routine, but we're going to tell you regardless.

Getting in a good night (or days) sleep allows your body and mind to re-energise so that you feel spritely and alert when you wake up. Without enough sleep, your mind will not be functioning properly and if your mind isn't at its peak, then expect to make more mistakes at the poker table.

Adults require between seven-nine hours of sleep and while it is difficult to feel tired amongst all the fun and flashing lights that the strip has to offer, it may be worth taking a night away from that juicy cash game and choosing to go to bed instead.

Home to the biggest tournaments online, these online poker rooms also have the largest player base, great bonuses, tons of action and the best software. If you don't have accounts here, you are missing out on the best that online poker has to offer.

Calum has been a part of the PokerNews team since September 2021 after working in the UK energy sector. He played his first hand of poker in 2017 and immediately fell in love with the game. Calum's proudest poker achievement is winning the only tournament he has ever played in Las Vegas, the prestigious $60 Flamingo evening event.

Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr: A lot is riding on No. 4 – Silver And Black Pride

Posted: at 2:25 am

If Derek Carr goes down, the Silver & Black ship sinks with him. Theres nothing controversial or provocative about that statement. Its as obvious as its the stone could truth.

The Las Vegas Raiders success is tied around the waist... err, arm of their franchise quarterback. How well the Silver & Black execute new head coach and play caller Josh McDaniels offense is predicated on the the availability of Derek Carr and his ability to operate without much undue duress (Ive written plenty about this before, but more on this later).

There was no waffling when the new regime came into Raiders HQ in Henderson new head coach Josh McDaniels waxed poetic about Carr being the right quarterback for his system and the ability to coach him is one of the reasons he and good friend (and new general manager) Dave Ziegler defected from the New England Patriots and are the new Silver & Black power structure.

McDaniels will rely heavily on Carrs cerebral nature along with his ability to sling the pigskin all over the field. Hence the long-term security Ziegler and McDaniels bestowed upon Carr (a pretty penny of a $121.5 million three-year extension).

To help maximize the return on investment the Raiders put into Carr, Ziegler got to wheeling and dealing in both free agency and the NFL Draft. The biggest catch, of course, is wide receiver Davante Adams from the Green Bay Packers. There will be no lapse in synergy between the unquestioned No. 1 wideout and the franchise quarterback because both have spent offseason time working out with each other and had considerable amount of snaps and practice time as Fresno State Bulldogs.

Precision, timing, preparation and the creative nuances that McDaniels orchestrated under the massive wing of Bill Belichick will now be a Las Vegas thing.

That prep began when the team convened at HQ starting April 11 new coaching staff afforded the Raiders that opportunity.

Its a new process for everybody, coach Josh McDaniels said during his media session in late April. Were all coming from a little bit of a different situation and getting to know each other and really just learning our language. How do we communicate with one another, our process on the field, how we work, the tempo that we want to work at, the fundamentals and the techniques that were really emphasizing.

Were really not in a competition mode yet. That wont come until we get into OTAs a little bit, and then itll obviously pick up in training camp. But (were) really just focusing on our process. Im pleased with the turnout and the tremendous effort and attitude by the guys that are here.

Competition is sound and will be instrumental for the 2022 season.

Every spot on our team is going to have competition. Whether we drafted somebody or didnt draft somebody, theres competition at every spot on the team. I dont care what the spot is, McDaniels said. Thats what weve tried to do at each spot that we could (through) free agency (and the) draft. That wont ever stop.

Thats a great philosophy, but when it comes to the competition at quarterback, its for QB2 and beyond. Carr is the best option and thats not going to change.

The Others

Forget all the mumbo jumbo about the quarterback rankings in the league or AFC West. It matters little. Why? Because Carr is the Raiders best option to win. Theres no other signal caller on the roster that brings what he can bring period.

Hence, if he is forced to the sideline for any reason this season, things will be bleak Silver & Bleak.

McDaniels, Ziegler and the rest of the Raiders staff liked Jarrett Stidham and Nick Mullens enough to trade for the former and sign the latter in free agency. Stidham comes from the New England Patriots quarterback farm system while Mullens spent last season with the Cleveland Browns.

But neither of those names is a resounding confidence booster if either had to assume the mantle of starting quarterback. Neither will bring the 8,141 career snaps Carr has under center as a Raider, nor the 65 percent career completion rate along with 193 touchdowns to 85 interceptions.

As scrappy as Mullens has been hes the type that can bring the fight and get up after being knocked down hes not the franchise-type. Hes more of a Matt McGloin or Bruce Gradkowski-type quarterback, if anything. Stidham is still a relative unknown as health issues have derailed opportunities he couldve had in New England.

Needs Solving

This is a two-part item, but they go hand-in-hand, really.

First is Carr Insurance. The trendy tagline thats often bestowed upon the offensive line charged with keeping the quarterback upright, clean and in a protected pocket or best it can muster. The Raiders offensive line remains a question mark but Ziegler and crew got cracking on that by doubling up at the position group in the draft.

Carmen Bricillo plays an integral role here as the new offensive line boss, a role that Tom Cable held during his second stint with the Raiders. Cable mixed in different tactics but is a known zone blocking scheme purist. Bricillo is more of a gap scheme type coach, but well see in training camps and preseason games how his brutes will fare.

Carr was sacked 40 times this past season the second most in a season over the course of his nine-year career. The 2018 season is Carrs high-water mark of 51 total sacks. The last amount of times hes seen the turf was the magical 2016 season that saw DC4 only dropped 16 times.

When given time to operate, disseminate what the defense is doing, and his targets getting separation and open, Carr can sling it with the best of them. When things go awry and the pocket gets noisy or doesnt hold up, like any other signal caller, Carr goes slack.

Get Six

And that brings us to the second item: the red zone. That sucker was a dead zone for the Raiders offense the past two seasons under then-head coach and chief offensive architect Jon Gruden. That was a tremendous boon for place kicker Daniel Carlson, but it left points on the field when the offense couldnt get into the end zone for six.

But this is where the addition of Adams should pay dividends if not will. His route-running and ability to separate in the money zone made him a big-time target for Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay. That must happen in Las Vegas with Carr now Adams quarterback. Slot dynamo Hunter Renfrow is a menace at separation too, and tight end Darren Waller (if healthy) is a nightmare matchup as well.

Now defenses have to account for Adams instead of getting tunnel vision on Renfrow and Waller. Not only that, but theres a recommitment to the run game brewing in Henderson.

Ground & Pound

With Josh Jacobs and Kenyan Drake already in tow, Ziegler and Co. took Zamir Zeus White in the draft. The Georgia product is equal parts power and speed with his ability to run through contact and leave defenders behind. Its an interesting addition that can be tabbed redundant with Jacobs on the roster. However, the entire Raiders staff lives, breaths and eats the mantra of competition and pushing everyone to earn a job or snaps. And redundant is a common theme in the building.

Id say running back is just a tough position in the league, Ziegler noted in late April. Those guys take a pounding, and its a physical position. Weve talked about it from the beginning: We want to build depth and competition.

Jacobs and Drake need to stay on point or Zeus can strike like a lightning bolt much to his namesake. Hes got an intriguing blend of size, speed, power and vision. Thats all the makeup of a tailback that should bleed into Jacobs and/or Drakes carries.

Bottom Line

Of course, this all harkens back to how well the Raiders offensive line can gel and work as a unit. Then again, Las Vegas did get to a 10-7 record and a playoff berth behind last years O-line. Perhaps even the most minute improvements results in something better in 2022.

It all works hand-in-hand really. McDaniels play calling coupled with Carr and crews ability to either execute the called play or check into a better one and execute that. Yet, if its not Carr under center, you can pretty much execute the Raiders playoff aspirations on the spot.

Las Vegas mother accused of driving drunk with child in truck, firing gunshot into air – KLAS – 8 News Now

Posted: at 2:24 am

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) A mother is accused of driving drunk with her child and firing a gunshot into the air after a fight with a man in a densely populated neighborhood, Las Vegas Metro police said.

Tiffany Watts faces charges of discharging a gun or weapon where a person might be endangered, child abuse or neglect, and DUI, records showed.

Police said they responded to a call Friday for an illegal shooting in a residential area near Grand Teton Drive and Jones Boulevard in the northwest valley.

Responding officers spoke to a witness, who said a woman and a man had gotten into a fight before she heard the gunshot. Officers then attempted to locate a truck possibly involved, later finding it near the intersection of Bradley Road and Severance Lane, they said.

Police stopped the car, finding Watts and a child inside, they said.

As officers cleared the vehicle, [an officer] observed in plain view a black Glock in a holster underneath the drivers seat, officers wrote in an arrest report.

The child told police Watts and another man got into a fight, which later prompted Watts to retrieve the gun from the car and fire a round into the air, police said.

Police also noted Watts had a slight odor of an unknown alcoholic beverage on her breath at the time, they said.

A judge released Watts on her own recognizance without any bail on Saturday, records showed. The judges name was not listed in the record.

As part of her release agreement, Watts was ordered to stay out of trouble.

Might Las Vegas’ DIY indie fest Neon Reverb return? – Las Vegas Weekly

Posted: at 2:24 am

Thu, May 19, 2022 (2 a.m.)

More than any other Valley music festival, Neon Reverb was aimed at locals. While the indie fest, founded in 2008 by James Woodbridge and Thirry Harlin, welcomed its share of popular national actsThe Walkmen, No Age, Wavves, The Regrettes, Jay Som, The Drums, Foxygen and many others played Reverb on their way upits showcases typically took place on intimate Downtown stages and have always featured local bands. And while Neon Reverb hasnt been held since a budget-restricted, truncated installment in 2018, its stakeholders vow that it will return, at a time to be determined. Woodbridge explains that he and partners Jason Aragon and Mike Henry have a major obstacle to overcome: Rising bands arent touring in numbers as they were prior to the pandemic, which needs to happen for Reverb to keep ticket prices low. In the meantime, Neon Reverb will continue to present one-off shows (Phoebe Bridgers March 2019 Vegas appearance, as part of Better Oblivion Community Center with Conor Oberst, was a Reverb production) while keeping an eye on touring schedulesand making sure the festivals good name endures. Ive been talking to bandsboth local and touringand music fans at shows, and people are enthusiastic when the topic of Neon Reverb returning comes up, Woodbridge says. That definitely energizes our commitment to bringing the festival back.

Las Vegas women tied up victim, threatened to kill her, cut off her fingers, police say – KLAS – 8 News Now

Posted: April 22, 2022 at 4:29 am

Victim previously knew 1 woman, police say

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) Two women held a third woman against her will, tying her up with zip ties and threatening to cut off her fingers in a reported kidnapping last weekend, police said.

Girlfriends Rebecca Reyes, 44, and Ronda Williams, 38, broke into the victims home last Saturday, police said. The victim knew one of the women, police said.

Metro police said a person called them, saying she had received a text message from the victim. The victim had texted the caller, saying people were refusing to let her leave her home. The victim also had taken a photo, showing her face battered and bleeding, police said.

The victim told police she woke up around 2 a.m. to the sound of a loud bang at the door. Williams then came into her bedroom, telling the victim they would play good cop, bad cop, police said.

Officers said police had shown up at the home earlier in the day. When that happened, Williams reportedly put a gun to the victims head and said, [expletive] I will kill you.

Police said Reyes never physically used force against the victim during the incident; however, police said she went through the victims computer to look for money transfers and her passwords.

At one point, Reyes left the home to find scissors to cut off [the victims] fingertips, police said. The two women also discussed a U-Haul being ordered for the victims body.

When officers arrived for the second time, the victim said she had told Williams she would tell the officers that everything was okay. Police responded and knocked on the door. When the door opened, the victim immediately ran out toward the officers.

Police said they retrieved zip tips and other items from the two women during their arrest. Detectives later found a shopping receipt for a knife set and hedge shears, they said.

Both women refused to speak with investigators and demanded lawyers.

Reyes faces conspiracy charges to commit robbery, burglary, robbery, conspiracy to commit kidnapping and kidnapping. Judge Holly Stoberski set bail at $50,000. Reyes remained at the Clark County Detention Center as of Thursday morning.

Williams faces conspiracy charges to commit robbery, burglary, robbery, battery, conspiracy to commit kidnapping and kidnapping. She was being held without bail.

Neon Museum still seeks to expand. Only somewhere else. – Las Vegas Review-Journal

Posted: at 4:29 am

The Neon Museum, the outdoor memorial to vintage and flashy Las Vegas signage, may expand some day.

But that plan no longer involves the city-owned Reed Whipple Cultural Center, as pandemic-related impacts and new obligations from a recent national accreditation proved to be too much to overcome to proceed with a proposal signed off on in 2019.

The project, launched prior to the COVID-19 crisis under previous museum leadership, had called for the museum to double its footprint on Las Vegas Boulevard by entering the old cultural center across the street from the museums main Neon Boneyard.

But nearly three years after the plan was approved, the museum and city of Las Vegas on Wednesday ended an agreement that provided the museum with grant funding to support expansion operations into the vacant building.

The museum will now reimburse the city $1.1 million of the $1.6 million it was paid, and keep the remaining amount for security and other costs, according to a city staff report.

In the end, we determined that the building would require pretty extensive work, Neon Museum Executive Director Aaron Berger said Wednesday.

Problems with the expansion first publicly surfaced in December, when it was revealed that the museum had missed construction deadlines. At the time, Berger who took the helm in July said that the pandemic had delayed planning and fundraising for the project and that museum officials were reexamining financial estimates needed to undertake the expansion.

The former cultural center is in need of renovation after closing in summer 2016. That project phase was anticipated in May 2019 to cost $3.1 million, although it was unclear how estimates had changed over time.

Accreditation last year by the American Alliance of Museums added to the projects complexity. Neon Museum officials embraced the achievement with open arms because less than 3 percent of the nations 33,000 museums get the recognition, according to Berger. But it also applies more stringent rules on how buildings are outfitted.

Under the plan that predated Bergers arrival, the old cultural centers back parking lot would have become the museums third neon-sign boneyard, adding to its main display and north gallery across the street. The buildings 8,000-square-foot theater was to be converted into an indoor gallery. And other areas were to be used for public demonstrations of neon artistry, classrooms, offices and storage.

While the museum is officially stepping away from plans to occupy the old Reed Whipple Cultural Center, Berger assured that the museum had not abandoned plans to grow.

We are aggressively pursuing expansion opportunities in the city of Las Vegas, he said.
